aksel's guide to relaxing media
A lot of people have asked me to compile a list of my go-to depressing/dooming media, but I feel it would be irresponsible to give you that without an antidote.
Maybe this will be of help to you on an anxious night and instead of smoking a cigarette you'll turn to this or maybe its a nice cozy afternoon and you need something to maintain that feeling.. either way here's stuff that I consume on those days:
Film/TV
youtube
Joe Pera Talks You to Sleep
This is something I have recommended to most of my friends at this point and if you ever give me the opportunity I'll probably talk your ear off about this man. I have a very special affinity towards this video, as it randomly found me on a particularly stressful quarantine night and boy am I glad it did.
I'm not gonna talk about it too much further, but if you're feeling a little bit lost or anxious, even after my 250 watches of this, I end up feeling a little bit better. If you like it make sure to check out his show, Joe Pera Talks With You on hbomax as it's one of my favourite shows ever!! The episodes are short and easy to digest :)
How to With John Wilson
It's hard for me to exactly describe this show, it's just one of those things you have to see for yourself to fully understand the appeal of it. For the most part, this show uses street footage of New York City and interviews with average everyday New Yorkers to convey some kind of narrative, usually disguised as a tutorial(hence the "how to"). There's a lot of absurdity, laughter and sometimes it plays with your emotions a bit, but sometimes it's nice to just unwind and learn about the insane industry of scaffolding in NYC.
youtube
Come and Visit Us Again
Okay, so this is probably one of the most niche things here.. Considering that it has 205 views as of me writing this and it's in estonian with no captions available.(Maybe someday I'll translate it)
As far as I can tell, it is a documentary short made by Liis Nimik, who at the time was a film school student. It follows the day-to-day of a village grocery store cashier and her interactions with the people who visit her store everyday.
Moms, dads, scary little kids and village bums.. It has it all and serves as this kind of a sweet time capsule of one particular week in this one Estonian village. I will admit this is probably extra comforting for me as I grew up near a village similar to this that also had a store just like this one. In a small village, the people who work at the local grocery store really become apart of your everyday life and I loved to see it captured like this.
I feel like even if you don't understand Estonian, it's nice background noise.
Malcom in the Middle
Need I say more?
Youtube
If you know me, you know I'm a fiend for comforting youtube personalities. Here are some of my favorites:
youtube
Steve Wallis
Even if you aren't particularly interested in camping, you'll still probably enjoy these videos. Steve is probably one of the sweetest dudes I've found on YouTube and he really knows how to keep a conversation. All in all, just nice to throw on if you just wanna disconnect for 30 minutes
youtube
Shirley Curry
I've loved Shirley's stuff for years now. She calls her viewers her grandkids and posts vlogs & let's plays. I think that covers the gist of it.
youtube
Featureman a.k.a. Tom Willett
This is an older gentleman, who for the most part shows you different meals that he makes & tells you stories about his time as an actor in the 1980s. Every video feels like you're visiting your grandpa.
youtube
GIFGAS
I found them quite recently, but they're quickly turning into my favourite Youtube channel. Videos of trainhopping, which are so well shot and the music choices are soooooo gooooood. Every travel vlog should have a mandatory requirement of at least (1) shoegaze song.
youtube
Roger Hance
Found this guy randomly on my recommended and him only having 4k subs feels like a crime. He's a bird photographer, who vlogs his outings and talks about all the little birds he sees. super cute.
Music
Below are a couple of playlists and tracks I recommend for this occasion:
Mixture of ambient tracks and just relaxing instrumentals. There's no vocals. During the summer, I would always listen to this if I was sitting in a park or doodling.
This is just some of my favourite ambient tracks. If you've never really listened to ambient music before, check this out I guarantee you'll like it.
I have fallen asleep to this so many times that sometimes i just constantly hear it in the back of my head. Maybe thats not a comforting thought but it helps me sleep so that's a price I am willing to pay.
That's about it though.. I didn't include everything, because this is already pretty long and I have to keep some things secret, but I hope you find use in some of this. bye

A Swell Time
The actor Edward Askew Sothern as 'Lord Dundreary', carte de visite c. 1876 (Flickr). There are many pictures of Sothern striking comic poses in-character as Dundreary.
Although the corseted Dandy was not extinct by any means, his place in the public eye was now taken by the Heavy Swell, for whom the character of ‘Lord Dundreary’ (in Tom Taylor’s Our American Cousin) as portrayed by E. A. Sothern, in 1861, served as the perfect model. Never before or since has an actor in a single part had such an effect on Fashions. Not only the immortal whiskers but the affected pose and manners and languid drawling lisp were borrowed from Lord Dundreary who might almost be said to have turned the Dandy into the Heavy Swell.
— Phillis Cunnington and C. Willett Cunnington, on men's fashion of the 1860s, in Handbook of English Costume in the 19th Century
The Heavy Swell is also a standard of John Leech's midcentury comics, which is how I encountered him.
Shopman. "Oh, I beg your pardon, sir—but the lady left her parasol on the counter!"
Swell. "Haw! Ya–as–no! That is, it's my umbrellaw. Thanks! By Jove! Haw!"
See also: "Good gwacious!" and even MIWACKULOUS. The character type and distinctive lisp/drawl was established in the 1850s before Lord Dundreary parodied it at its height. But how did the word swell come to describe this well-off gentleman—a real gentleman, even if he has his foibles—from its usage a few decades prior?
The 1823 edition of Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue defines a swell as, "A gentleman; but any well-dressed person is emphatically termed a swell, or a rank swell. A family man [thief] who appears to have plenty of money, and makes a genteel figure, is said, by his associates, to be in Swell-street." The well-dressed criminal swell is the model for Mr. Easthupp from Frederick Marryat's Mr. Midshipman Easy (1836), a purser's steward with a background as a pickpocket. Easthupp is called a swell, and several times he's said to be from "the swell mob," which is clearly referring to low-life society.
When Easthupp is (non-fatally) wounded in a duel, he confesses:
"Oh dear! oh dear! what a fool I was; I never was a gentleman—only a swell: I shall die; I never will pick a pocket again—never—never—God forgive me!"
Even in the late 1840s, a guide to brothels was called "The New Swell's Night Guide."
"With Numerous Spicy Engravings". Maybe John Leech's swells are less innocent than I thought?
"Barrack Life", 1851. Feat. two Heavy Swells.

Hollis Cavner 3M Open will have a Competitive Tour
It’s labeled as Minnesota’s golf event of the summer. Tournament officials hosted media day on Monday at the course, and Executive Tournament Director Hollis Cavner quickly addressed the elephant in the room that's challenging PGA Tour fields: The LIV Tour.
The new Saudi-backed golf tour has attracted some of the game’s best players, including Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuisen. PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan is suspending any current players headed to the LIV Tour, meaning they can’t play in any tour events, such as the 3M Open.
The LIV Tour is a series of eight events that are 54-hole tournaments without a cut. The winner of the first event, Charl Schwartzel, won more than $4 million. The last place finisher gets $100,000. Players are also put on teams, which are paid for their group’s performance. Some players got paid hundreds of millions of dollars to join.
This year’s field will include 32 players who have won a tournament within the last 12 months, including six winners so far this season. The biggest of those names includes Sungjae Im, Tom Hoge and Tony Finau. Their most recent commitment, Sahith Theegala, took second to Xander Schaufelle on Sunday at the Travelers Insurance Championship.
The 3M Open will also feature 11 players who have finished in the top 10 in the tournament the last three years. They include Adam Hadwin, Lucas Glover, Spring Lake Park native Troy Merritt, Charles Howell III and Finau.
Fans will also see three major champion winners, most recently Danny Willett, the 2016 Master’s champion. Cavner said he’ll release more big names coming to Blaine in the three weeks leading up to the tournament. TPC Twin Cities will play to a 7,441-yard par-71, and the field will be cut from 156 to the low 60 and ties after 36 holes. The winner gets $1.35 million, and 500 points towards the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Edina native and former professional tennis player Mardy Fish, now playing on a celebrity golf tour, ha also been given a sponsor's exemption to play. The event, with its corporate sponsors, will also raise more than $1.5 million for local charities M Health Fairview, The First Tee Minnesota and Greater Twin Cities United Way.
"I feel good about where we’re at. We want this to be the happening of the summer. We’re going to have the best tournament ever this year I think," Cavner said.

The Soft Pink Truth - Is It Going To Get Any Deeper Than This? - deep house album (with several twists) by Drew Daniel of Matmos
Thrill Jockey is pleased to announce the return of The Soft Pink Truth, the solo electronic project of Drew Daniel, one half of Baltimore-found sound duo Matmos. Asked to explain his new album’s gauntlet-throwing title, Drew Daniel says: “Years ago a friend was DJing in a club and a woman came into the DJ booth and asked ‘is it going to get any deeper than this?’ and the phrase became a kind of mantra for us. What did she really want? This album was created as an attempt to imagine possible musical responses to her question.” Throughout the ten songs of the album, the provocation to go “deeper” prompts promiscuous moves across the genres of disco, minimalism, ambient, and jazz, sliding onto and off of the dancefloor, sweeping higher and lower on the scale of frequencies, engaging both philosophical texts re-set as pop lyrics and wordless glossolalia. Rather than a dryly pursued thesis, the music flows across emotional terrain from upfront peaks to melancholic valleys, often within the same song.
The Singers and Speakers: François Bonnet: Speech on “Deeper Than This?” Erica Burger-Hannum: Singing on “Trocadero” and “Deeper” Daniel Clark: Singing on “Deeper Than This?” Angel Deradoorian: Singing on “Deeper Than This?” Eléonore Huisse: Speech on “Deeper Than This?” Rose E. Kross: Voice on “Joybreath” Jamie Stewart: Singing on “La Joie Devant La Mort” Id M Theft Able: Voice on “Sunwash” and “Deeper Than This?” Jenn Wasner: Singing on “Wanna Know” The Players: Drew Daniel: Electronics, Backing Vocals, Piano, Production, Mix M.C. Schmidt: Piano, Electric Piano, Synthesizers, Percussion Jason Willett: Bass Guitar Mark Lightcap: Electric and Acoustic Guitar Úna Monaghan: Irish Harp on “Wanna Know” Obadias Guerra: Harp on “Now That It’s All Over” Tom Boram: Harpsichord Koye Berry: Piano Ulas Kurugullu: Violin, Viola, Cello, String Arrangements Nate Wooley: Trumpet on “Moodswing” Andrew Bernstein: Saxophone on “Deeper” John Berndt: Saxophone on “Sunwash” Brooks Kossover: Flute on “Deeper” Shelly Purdy: Vibraphone on “Sunwash” Ayoze de Alejandro Lopez: Percussion John Wiese: Broken Glass All songs by The Soft Pink Truth except “Now That It’s All Over”, which was written by Willie Hutch. This record was created in honor of a mysterious woman who walked up to a friend while he was DJing and asked “is it going to get any deeper than this?”
