Chapter 9 fic excerpt

Sorry for not updating sooner guys. I was procrastinating. I got like 6k written (I wrote most of it today and yesterday but that's neither here nor there), and I wanna offer you an excerpt as a little peace offering, so here's a little something in Ginny's pov.

"So," she started, refusing to nervously bite her lip, "what are your intentions?"

The alleyway was so silent she could hear a pin drop.

That's about when Harry choked, and shocked laughter bubbled out beside her.

Riddle simply stared unflinchingly; she was a bug under his gaze, but she refused to budge.

"I had a question." And the words I expect an answer were just on her lips.

A smile, brilliant and bright and all those synonyms for charming and handsome appeared on Riddle's perfect lips. He looked good, innocent, if she didn't see the monster hidden behind perfect, pin-straight teeth and intimidating crimson eyes. The man was imposing yet charming, a strange combination that made Ginny feel wrong-footed. She didn't like it.

"My intentions with Harry, Ms Weasley, are wholly pure."

Harry snorted.

"—are honest," Riddle corrected with a pointed look. "I wish to keep him, treasure him, provide for him a life of luxury as I court him and make him mine."

Harry eeped, and from a quick look behind her, Ginny could see a flush building on his cheeks and neck. She also noticed some hickies, but that wasn't her business aside from an eyebrow raise. Merlin, Riddle fucks hard, she thought, though that should have been obvious from Harry's, ah, detailed description of their encounter months ago in...the Ministry, in all likelihood. Harry and Voldemort were both missing for about an hour....

She was utterly scandalised, yet endlessly curious. Good Merlin...just what exactly were these two up to?

Ginny gave a strong exhale, and she pinched her nose with two fingers. These two would give her a heart attack one day.

"Good enough," she glared. "Now, just before you run off and I interrogate Harry, I need you to know a few things...."

He looked amused. "Things? Whatever do you mean by that?" They both knew she couldn't actually intimidate him, and if he chose to kill them both she could do nothing, but fuck that, she thought. She would make her thoughts known.

She stepped up to Riddle until she was a pace and a half away from him. "You listen here, Riddle.... Harry is my friend, practically my brother, and you will properly court and mate him, I expect nothing else but the proper deference. You will spoil him rotten and treat him like royalty, like he deserves. You won't ever hurt him and most of all, you—will—respect—him. Do you understand?"

Riddle smirked, but he nodded convincingly. "Of course, Ms Weasley, I would do nothing but."

"Call me Ginny, you did spend a year possessing me once." If Voldemort was going to be her brother-in-law, it wouldn't matter much what he called her.

"Ginevra, then."

She scowled, and then Riddle chuckled.

He turned to leave, but before he did so, he stated pointedly, "You are far less irritating at fifteen than eleven, Ginevra, just so you know. But don't push it."

Ginny's jaw dropped, and she would have choked on her spit if her jaw didn't immediately snap shut at seeing Riddle steal a long, deep kiss from Harry and a quick squeeze of his arse before he left.

Harry gave a sappy smile as he stared after Riddle.

Ginny blushed bright red. Wow, those two were something. She could practically feel the pheromones in the air.

1. How long are you currently anticipating it will be?

2. Following the intro of Luna and Xena in this chapter (which I'm very excited about!), can you give us any hints of what other characters that are maybe planned but have yet to make an appearance?

3. What's something coming up that you're most excited about?

Hi! So excited about answering these!! This fic is on my mind a lot.

1. How long are you currently anticipating it will be? I am not sure? I have somewhat of a plot but the section in the middle is still a bit of a question mark. It's 24K now so I expect it to be in the 50K to 70K ballpark? Mind you I'm really bad at estimates but I feel like we are still very much at the start of this story and we are 5 chapters in so there is still some bit to come

2. Following the intro of Luna and Xeno in this chapter, can you give us any hints of what other characters that are maybe planned but have yet to make an appearance? Aging Luna down happened to fit with the story well and I think it gives the opportunity to let the friendship between Luna and both Ginny and Harry shine in a different way. I have ideas but nothing is concrete yet. It's more like naming them as they are convenient. Obviously within Harry's actual tribe, we are going to have the classic death eaters helping Tom Riddle keep the tribe in line. Like Demelza who was introduced (Melza) this week, I think I'll pick up names as I need them within the story. I am considering how I want to introduce the Weasley partners. None of them are in the tribe (or they would have already been married) so some of them can live in Harry's tribe. I think definitely Hermione (and then Ron takes care of her etc) but I'm decided about any of the others. Introducing them all in one go might feel a bit messy. I will probably not put them all in by the end of the story. People like Fleur don't really fit into it to me, because she needs to have that outsider thing, but I don't think I have time within the story to introduce her coming from elsewhere because that would take too much time away from the actual plot.

3. What's something coming up that you're most excited about? There are so many things... introducing Arnold, their language progress and Ginny's stress over having a baby by next summer but one that jumps out is when they travel after winter and Harry sees the sea for the first time in his life! I need to decide exactly how it's going to go but it's one of those moments I've pinpointed that I absolutely wanted to pause and use it as a way for them to connect in a new way

How would the storyline change if the Weasleys were actual blood purists?

Hard to say.

You would have completely different books, however. The story hinges on Harry, Ron and Hermione becoming friends. You need all three of them for the storyline to happen.

And I don't see them becoming friends, if Ron was a blood purist.

Harry might still become friends with Ron, but this is where the possible plot lines would start to diverge. If he did befriend Ron, they would not befriend Hermione. In the beginning of Philosopher's Stone, they are already pretty mean to her. Blood purist!Ron would ramp that up to eleven. It's likely, that he would lean into Harry's hate for the Dursleys and teach him some blood purist ideology. That, in turn, would affect how they see Hermione. She would go from "annoying know-it-all" to "that stupid mud blood, that doesn't know how to shut up".

So Harry and Ron would either stay a duo or befriend someone else. However, it's hard to imagine who they might befriend. Dean and Seamus are kind of out of the question. They seem to be a packed deal and Dean is considered a muggle born, too. This would leave Neville in the Gryffindor dorm, but they think he's lame, even in canon. I also can't see them befriend Lavender and Parvati. (This time, because they are too girly for them in canon. Can't see that changing, either.)

They could get sorted into Slytherin, however. This would open up friendships with the other Slytherin kids. (Most likely Draco.)

If Harry was repulsed by Ron's blood purist ideology (just like he was repulsed by Draco's), he might think "Ewww, it's another Dudley! Why are here so many Dudley's?!" and befriend someone else instead. That could be Hermione. You could end up with a friendship between Harry, Hermione and Neville without that many troubles. Their dynamic would probably be closest to the one Harry has with Hermione and Ron. (There would be less bickering, however. I would also assume that befriending Neville early on would cause Harry and Hermione to become a less mean.)

You could also end up with a friendship between Harry, Dean and Seamus. Three half-blood boys, one of which grew up as a wizard, one as a muggleborn and one somewhere in between. That could work.

This would also open up possibilities for bigger groups and wackier combinations. It would be fun to bring Lavender and Parvati into the friend group. I would love that. (Because, fuck Rowling and her fucking misogyny. The way her narrative treated those girls was just vile.)

It would also affect how the novels themselves play out. As I said - you need Hermione and Ron to be Harry's friends for the narrative to play out the way it did. This does include their strengths, their weaknesses and their connections.

The friend group needs Hermione, to do research and to solve some of the puzzles they encounter. (Like Snape's riddle in Philosopher's Stone.) The group also needs Ron to solve some of the other puzzles. (Like McGonagall's game of chess.) They also need his connections. Without Ron, they wouldn't have been able to smuggle Norbert(a) out of the school, because he was the one who provided the contact to Charlie.

The Weasleys being blood purist, would also change entire plots of the later books.

Chamber of Secrets only happens, because the Weasleys aren't blood purists. In That book, Arthur wrote a law about hexing muggle stuff, that caused a lot of raids, that mostly targeted the homes of blood supremacists. It was those raids, that caused Lucius Malfoy to visit Knockturn Alley and sell some of his illegal stuff. He used that visit to smuggle Tom Riddle's diary into Ginny's belongings. (Probably to achieve both: To get rid of it and to fuck with the Weasleys.) But the diary needs to be in Ginny's possession for the plot to happen.

Had Arthur been a blood purist, he wouldn't have written that law. And if there was no law, Lucius might have kept the diary. It's also unlikely that Arthur and Lucius would hate each other the way they do in canon. So even if Lucius tried to get rid of the diary, it's likely that he would've targeted someone else instead. The chamber might have remained closed and/or the diary would not have been destroyed. (This would affect later books, too, because they require the destruction of the diary to work.)

Something similar would've happened in Prisoner of Azkaban: The book hinges on Peter turning into a rat and hiding with the Weasleys as "Scabbers" and the Weasleys not noticing that their pet was exceeding its life expectancy at least thrice. The book needs the Weasleys to go to Egypt, take Scabbers with them and get photographed for the newspaper. Seeing Peter on that photo is what motivates Sirius to break out of Azkaban and go after him.

The thing is: Peter was hiding from both, members of the Order of the Phoenix and Death Eaters alike. Had the Weasleys been blood purists, they would've been on the other side of the first war. Fabian and Gideon might've been Death Eaters instead of Order members. That could've been way too close a connection for Peter's liking. (We know that at least some Death Eaters - unlike the Order - knew about Peter betraying the Potters. Sirius heard them talking about it while he was in Azkaban.) It's entirely possible that Peter would've picked a different family to hide at or a completely different hiding strategy altogether.

But if Peter wasn't with the Weasleys when they went to Egypt, he wouldn't have been on that photo. So Sirius would've needed a different reason to break out of Azkaban. And you kind of need Sirius to break out and go after Peter. Otherwise, Peter would not get revealed to be a Death Eater (and still alive) and he wouldn't flee to go search for Voldemort. (And you need that for Goblet of Fire to function.)

So yeah. There would be a couple of very fundamental changes in the earlier books. And the more is changed in the earlier books, the more this affects the later books. You would've a completely different storyline, especially later on.

Ideas for enemy Angels: Meg and any other antagonists on (SPN), Daki/Ume and Gyutaro or any of the demons really (Demon Slayer), Zatara and have Zatanna as one of the MCs- that is some angst potential right there (YJ), Toga, Mr. Compress (MHA), Raoul (Sense8), tyler and matt (TVD), the death eaters (HP), and idk for Hazbin Hotel?

I think Cas or Adam (SPN), Giyu or Kanao (Demon Slayer), Conner or Zatara (YJ), Sun, Wolfgang (Sense8), Enzo or Alaric (TVD), Husk or Arackniss/Salvatore (Hazbin Hotel), Young Aizawa, Hawks, Dabi, Shirakumo, Young Mic (MHA), or Dazai, Ranpo, Chuuya, Atsushi, Akutagawa (BSD) would be great for the Sniper Mask role. I want a Good!Tom Riddle that is NOT Tom X Harry!

I recently read Chamber of Secrets for the first time and, as someone who watched the movies first, I was genuinely surprised about how much I relate to Ginny Weasley!

Tom Riddle is incredibly charming and, just like little Ginny, I completely fell for it (even though I knew he was Voldemort all along). I just couldn't help it, he plays the role of the sweet, innocent Golden Boy too well!! I genuinely felt sorry for him when he started blushing while talking about the orphanage he lived in 💔

Obviously it's just a facade, a mask he wears to manipulate people and not his real self. I'm not at all trying to somehow justify the actions of Lord Voldemort. I'm just saying that, like Ginny and Harry, I fell for him.

But when I decide to search online for Alternative Universes where he was actually this prince charming with a heart of gold (*hyperbole*) that he pretended to be, I only found disgusting Tomarry smut.

I do understand that this is a crack ship that shouldn't be taken seriously, but damn, I must say I'm deeply disappointed and sad. Apparently, Tom Marvolo Riddle can only be "good" when the author wants him to fuck Harry James Potter.

And those fanfiction don't even base his "good side" on what we actually see him performing in the book, but apply the most generic and cliche 'cold, no feelings boyfriend and only y/n can made him love again' personality, but y/n is just called Harry.

I'm deeply mad at this fandom. Tom Riddle could be such a layered and complex characters if we consider his Golden Boy Persona as real, or at least something he's trying to be.

I know that J.K. Rowling dives more deep into his past in later books and I currently only read books 1 and 2, but from I could see, good!Tom Riddle (canon based + a bit of my headcanons): Comes from a negligent (possibly abusive) household that he much rather not go back to;

Tries to be the perfect boy in school, in a desperate quest for acceptance;

Tries to do what he judges right, even if it hurts other people or himself, it's for the greater good;

Does not have actual friends because he can't bond with people (and some people think he's just a show off);

Is a Teacher's Pet because he subconsciously wants validation;

Spent 5 years trying to learn more about who he and his mother's family are;

(Probably has a pet Basilisk — who might or not have killed Myrtle);

Gets along better with snakes than humans, because he doesn't need to try so hard around them.

Speaks Parseltongue in his sleep.

I'm fully aware that it also sounds very cliche, and I the need to say that as I, myself, don't ship Tom and Harry at all, I'm not here to hate this ship or on its shippers. “Ship and let ship.„ You do you, guys. I can understand how the whole Dark Mirror situation could have been appealing to some.

I just wanted to vocalize my frustrations about this damn ship basically monopolizing the "Good Tom Riddle" tag on Ao3.

I'd love fanfiction recommendations about it if you have some <3

Y'all wanna know a really funny but unexplored friendship dynamic in fics? Tom and Ginny. Voldemort and Ginny. My fic's Ginny is a spitfire who's still kinda upset Tom betrayed her but she also ends up increasingly realizing that Voldie!Tom is a bit of a loser who is VERY in love with Harry and she just goes nuts.

She and Tom are hilarious friends. Like, she wrote to Tom's literal diary for almost a year you cannot tell me she doesn't know extremely cringey things about this man. Like, Ginny is gonna have a really funny frenemy dynamic with Tom if it's the last thing I do. I love their friendship. It's hilarious and y'all are NEVER gonna hear the end of it from me.

what’s the backstory of your oc maisie?

thank you so much for asking @spooky-albi-bumblebee ! particularly because it gives me the opportunity to yap about Maisie, which is something I'm always more than eager to do

(I don't often post about Maisie in this sideblog, but @romulumiko is my archive for all things maisie, where i usually reblog posts and pictures that I exclusively use when i'm creating and plotting maisie. i haven't decided in what blog i'd post her fic though)

Maisie's backstory is not something fixed in the narrative (because i love torturing myself and decided to write her into all seven books) so her character expands and grows as the series goes on

I can't exactly go into details, since my plans include writing all this into a proper full length fic, which I've been chipping away at since ealier this year

But as you can see, I have many things arranged for Maisie and her place in the series, so like I said, there is no concrete "backstory" for maisie as much as there is a background for her life before Hogwarts (being Ron's more academically inclined twin) and the things that happen thereafter

But despite the tremendous effort, this also lends itself to a more dynamic handling of her personality and relationships with others throughout the story

Indeed, much like her developing friendship with Harry and later romance (because I'm a sucker for protagonists), my plans have Maisie colorfully interacting with many characters in the books, from Cho Chang to professor Lupin and Snape

Regardless, I do think there is a certain character that shapes Maisie more than others, and which catapult her place in the story and character development, that being Tom Riddle

I don't remember when exactly I decided that maisie would be using the diary instead of ginny (sorry ginny fans), but by the time maisie's second year rolls around, she is in a particularly vulnerable spot, isolated from her family, who all got sorted into gryffindor, and alienated from her peers in ravenclaw.

much of maisie's conflict throughout the books relies on her being the only member of the weasley family to be in a different house to Gryffindor, although it does not stem only from her sorting, but by a life long sense of otherness she has cultivated for feeling the only different one in a big family like the weasleys

Maisie's curiosity and love for magical creatures (and consequently her understanding of magic as a dynamic force present in the world that surrounds her), makes her more susceptible to the temptation of learning about the Dark Arts, as she is prone to more shades of grey in its use and interpretation than most characters in the series. This makes her understanding of magic similar to characters like Snape and Voldemort (as @ saintsenara brilliantly illustrates in her voldemort/hermione and snape/hermione metas) who are, not coincidentally, prominent Dark Arts users.

Likewise, her sorting in Ravenclaw is not just for show. There is an interesting overlap between Ravenclaws and Slytherins in relation to their ambition and how they approach Dark Magic. Unsurprisingly, all the ambitious and/or popular characters we see in the series (those who don't belong to Slytherin), like Lockhart, Cho Chang (or even the House's Ghost the Grey Lady, who stole her mother's crown due to a feeling of inferiority), are pointedly Ravenclaws.

As we are told by JK in Pottermore, Quirrel first embarked in his journey to Albania to "find whatever remained of the Dark wizard, partly out of curiosity [...] [Quirrell fantasised that he] at best, might learn skills from Voldemort", attenting to this trait of Ravenclaws sometimes disregarding communal perceptions of right and wrong, whereas for academic recognition, personal curiosity or outright eccentricity.

All of this is to say, the most important part of Maisie's story is definitely, as I envision it now, her encounter with Tom Riddle's diary during CoS and their year long situationship.

Genre conventions didn't really allow for any exploration of how Tom Riddle's manipulation of Ginny post CoS affected her later on, which I believe is definitely a pity. I emphasize my definition of Maisie and Tom's relationship as a "situationship", even if they are never explicitly described as being in a romantic relationship, because of the grooming qualities in the canon text of Ginny's relationship with Tom Riddle (once again explained masterfully in one of saintsenara's meta) which I'm choosing to run along with very excitedly

(I have, after all, a lot of Fionna Apple songs in my tomaisie playlist)
