for some reason this sequence from the csm manga makes me weirdly sad in a way that I can't place. I think its because earlier tolka says she has half a year left to live. she's fine btw don't worry about it

I'm not sure I have an entire meta on the subject in me, only a handful of bullet points. (I think I took about two and a half weeks to read the manga, for reference.)
Much of the worldbuilding is oblique and implicit, so the more time you give yourself to digest the story, the better you'll understand the more ambiguous elements. "Does Pochita actually purge things from existence, or just erase memories?," "Why didn't Angel regrow his arms?," or "Why couldn't Yoru transform Denji into a weapon?" are, for instance, all questions that the reader has to puzzle out on their own.
The characters are much the same--they either don't understand themselves, don't want to be understood, or both. It's easier to make sense of their contours and nuances if you chew on them longer.
there are many instances of tiny panels showcasing little microexpression/gestures that are easy to overlook, but add texture to the characters if you stop to appreciate them.
I've seen a lot of people misunderstanding or misremembering pretty basic aspects of the plot, e.g., not realizing that Tolka's master is Santa, even after the twist is revealed, not registering that Reze had changed her mind and was trying to make her way back to Denji, Makima stating, very clearly, that she can control those who she thinks are beneath her, and yet, somehow, quite a few people seem convinced it's the other way around... None of these examples are hidden or ambiguous in the least, but they somehow flew right over peoples' heads regardless, in a way I haven't really seen in the other fandoms I've been in. I'm also far from the first person to make this observation--what with all those jokes about the reading comprehension devil. The best explanation I can come up with is that CSM is easier to eat than it is to digest: a bingeable story that doesn't benefit from binging.
The more you procrastinate on reading past chapter 72, the longer Aki and Power live. Proven, peer-reviewed science.
I will say though talking about how the chainsaw man anime ruined the fanbase is erasure of how most people who read the manga were also wrong about chainsaw man

Yknow I don't think I've seen any parallels between Makima and Aki/Santa and Tolka yet
Both of them involve strange women with their perception of humans? (Makima is associated with dogs, and Santa is associated with dolls) And men who have a soft affection for them, Aki and Tolka
Tumblr media
Like I'm probably reaching here, but doesn't Aki follow this formula too? He adores Makima and worships her like the others. He feels pity for the fox that is the Angel Devil. And then he feels the secret ingredient of guilt when he tearfully pleads to Makima to help him protect Denji and Power, expressing his guilt for causing Taiyo's death.
And then in the end, both Aki and Tolka are brainwashed by them, transformed into perfect vessels for the doll devil and the gun devil
