This is definitely my favourite scene in TRC anime ever!! Everything from the drawing, artstyle, voice, the animation, the music, etc. just so perfect and beautiful. The animation team and the director understand how this moment is peak and important to the story overall, they’ve tried their best.

My boy Tsu-kun was drawn so pretty here too my heart!! 😭💖

The soundtrack definitely the best thing in this scene too. I love how it builds up tension from the beginning, the haunting voice, and when Tsu woke up and the singers just went all out, the melody sounds like from this moment there will be tragedy. Yuki Kajiura is just so talented, not only the song fits so well with what’s happening, with the film’s atmosphere overall, but also perfectly with Tsu’s characterization and story: you can feel the sadness, tragedy, sacrifice, loneliness, elegant and most importantly his determination through the sing voices and melody.

i'd like to thank the haitani brothers for simultaneously giving us so much yet so little throughout this entire manga series. they truly were that iconic from start to finish

We could remove them from the story and pretty much nothing would change, they were just here to look pretty and get beat up so other character's could have their moments and we salute them for that.

There is a LOT in this, but we’ll start with Mokona. Because Mokona is a wholly good person who can and will befriend absolutely anyone in three seconds flat, naturally it’s her who warms up to Syaoran first in Sakura’s absence. Trust is not easy for the others. Trust is hard won under normal circumstances with the others, and this is about as far from normal as you can get, but Mokona knows what people feel, so she likes Syaoran instantly. Naturally. He should, after all, feel extremely familiar, all things considered. 

The first thing out of Mokona’s mouth are the words everyone is thinking: hoping that Sakura is ok. The shared concern for her should be as loud as a gong with everyone waiting as they are, and what better way to break the silence than to address everyone’s primary focus?

But then Mokona moves onto the more personal details. She asks if she can call him Syaoran - and it’s darling that she checks this, because a) there’s no honorific, b) she wants to make sure he’s ok with that name, considering all the weight behind it right now, and c) it actually addresses the thing that everyone is accutely aware of but haven’t actually talked about yet - that a stranger is essentially sliding right into the same place as their lost family member, and how awkward that must be for him, even if just in anticipating how everyone else might see him. 

And again, because Mokona is an empath, she locks onto his feelings; and the largest one is overwhelming loneliness. He has, after all, been alone for the majority of his life. And Mokona’s already starting to cry about this. Syaoran corrects her guess, telling us that he could actually see everything through the other Syaoran. Which, on the practical level, means he doesn’t need to be caught up on any of the plot, AND means he knows these people EXTREMELY EXTREMELY well, even if they’ve never met him. 

But it also means he’s talking shit. He’s not lying when he says he wasn’t completely alone, because he DID watch everything happen - but that doesn’t change the fact that Mokona can sense the aching loneliness inside him. And how much worse would it be, to watch all these people grow to love and trust each other and to feel like you know them intimately, because they’re almost talking to you - but they’re not. They don’t know you, they don’t trust you in the slightest, and every feeling you have for them is one-sided. How alone does THAT feel, right now?

And naturally, because Mokona is Mokona, she says exactly that. 

And she’s crying her eyes out. 

Because Syaoran is trying to act like he’s fine, but Mokona can feel it all, and she’s desperately trying to find some way to make him hurt less. 

And she’s right, and she’s right, and she’s right, and then SHE HITS THE GOLD THAT NO-ONE ELSE MIGHT HAVE GUESSED. 

Syaoran wanted to be friends with Syaoran, too. 

After seeing his life through his own eyes and feeling the same feelings, Lava Lamp Guy formed a really strong attachment to a guy who didn’t even know he existed. 

And then had to fight him as soon as they met.

They could have been brothers, almost, or best friends at the least, with all they had in common. And it seems like this is the first time that Syaoran has actually allowed himself to admit these feelings - that he hurts over the way things have turned out, even though someone else might not expect him to have any right to these feelings, since he was never technically there. 

But he was. Every step of the way. And he’s so lonely that Mokona is crying her eyes out.

wound up revisiting the hypmic timeline last night and maybe there’s a chance rei and nayuta met in that military department!!!

what makes me giggle about that tho is by the time wwiii starts, ichiro’s already been born and is 4 years old so if they did meet in that specific point in the timeline, that would mean it only took two years for rei and nayuta to start making babies LOL

Quincy? In MY dead people show? It's more likely than you think!

I was rewatching an episode of Six Feet Under, one of my top-fave shows in this world, and one of the characters said, "I talked to the Quincy down at the morgue" and I was like, wait.

Courtesy of Google, I learned it was a pop culture reference to the medical examiner down at the morgue, after the 70s/80s show, Quincy, M.E.

Does everyone else just know about this show naturally? Why did no one tell me?? Era/vibe-wise this aligns with a lot of Kubo's reference points (also lol that the Japanese air title was Doctor Detective Quincy, amazing), and blah blah Isshin's proto-canon career as mortician, a profession that would closely with MEs even without the shinigami thing; I feel like Kubo was definitely aware.

But setting that aside, the idea that I'm most interested in came while I was thinking about the fact that the SFU the character who said the line would have grown up while Quincy, M.E. was airing, and that that leads into why M.E.->Quincy a reference he'd easily make. (Also he's a restorative artist for a funeral home, but--) He's a little older than Ichigo et al, but I feel like Isshin definitely watched this show. And I just feel like, in-universe, this show played like a Bond Movie Marathon in the Kurosaki house. Like, pump the bass on that Asahi TV rerun. (Also, Quincy M.E.'s assistant is Japanese Canadian!) Ryuuken did not of his own volition see this show, but of course was aware of it. I just love the idea that the creation of "Quincy" as a pop culture term, as a reference to the interstices of death/doctors--regardless of whether it originated with THE Quincy or if they were only weathering serendipities of television--was circulating in the world like that, stage whispering about the ongoing existence of Quincy.

jabberwock's!!! i think the writing and the art and the music was PEAK in this chapter tbh??

i ADORE the music direction in that chapter it was so so so good and matched every scene perfectly!! i feel like the tumblr fandom doesn't talk about the game music that much but the music in this chapter was seriously 💯 !!

i also rly liked the art in this chapter the most, with the princess otohime storyline!! and the way the chapter introduced us to each of the characters i feel like the character exposition felt very natural and helped me understand them well!

16. what's your favorite house overall?

i PROMISE my brain isn't only filled with hotarubi... but it's hotarubi...... i feel like so far they're the only house (other than obscuary) who just wants mc around because they enjoy hanging out / chilling and not because they need her to do something or want something from mc? i'd hang out w them...
