Manga I Enjoyed in 2024
2024 has been an amazing year for manga. With the debut of the American Manga Awards to go alongside the Harvey Awards and Eisner Awards, we're about to head into some really fun times for manga recognition starting now. I read a lot of manga this year compared to last year, thanks to the libraries in my area.
But these few are the ones that impressed me the most.
Honorable Mention: Kagurabachi by Takeru Hokazono - I remember when I first read this manga, it became a meme. But once the meme died down, you got a title that's going to be another huge Shonen Jump anime hit. Reading Kagurabachi reminds me of the days when I loved BLEACH. The mix of sorcery, swords, and urban society combined with impressive art will leave a great impression on shonen readers. VIZ Media made an excellent decision in licensing the print edition as soon as possible as Volume 1 has sold amazingly well in bookstores across North America.
Favorite Ongoing Weekly Manga: Centuria by Tohru Kuramori - I swear more fans should know about this manga. Centuria is about a young man named Julian, who's been living as a slave for most of his life. On a slave ship, he meets a woman and a monster god - both who would change his life forever. Julian suddenly becomes endowed with supernatural powers and decides to pursue freedom however he can all while raising a child destined to be something more. This is a dark fantasy action series that is pretty much influenced by Berserk. Add the fact that Kuramori worked as an assistant under Tatsuki Fujimoto of Chainsaw Man and you have a highly underrated action series that will scratch any seinen fan's itch.
Without further ado, here's my top 5 manga of the year!
5.) She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat by Sakaomi Yuzaki - While this manga starts off as a nice yuri series about two women whose common interest is food, it goes into some good commentary about what it means to be a woman living in an extremely patriarchal society like Japan (which I'll discuss in a future post). I like how the manga becomes better with each volume as you get to see the cast grow and confront issues bothering them alongside each other. I appreciate that this series is about how eating food with people you care about is always worthwhile when you get a chance to do so.
4.) Home Office Romance by Kinetsu Yamada - This is a charming one-volume manga about two people who find love during a pandemic lockdown. Reading the manga made me relate to Nokoru, the male lead, as I share the same insecurities as he does when it comes to finally finding love and having the courage to push ahead with it. The manga also made me think about the early lockdown days of COVID as I did enjoy those days quite a bit. But nothing will ever beat actually wanting to be with someone in-person. Plus, good things do happen when you take the time to slow down. I knew this manga was a hit on Reddit and I can see why.
3.) Sketchy by Makihirochi - A librarian recommended this to me earlier this year around the summer, but the premise of skateboarding didn't appeal to me at first. I later gave the manga a shot after my library put it on their top 2024 book list. I was left very impressed. While this manga is about women trying to find more to life than love/work/school, I saw myself in the main characters due to finding a hobby (mahjong) that got me out there engaging with a world full of fun people not related to the daily grind. Sketchy is a testament to finding hobbies even as an adult and making friends there as those relationships are extremely important in ensuring that you still matter even if you're not respected by mainstream forces.
2.) The Darwin Incident by Shun Umezawa - This is a very clever, action-packed, political thriller. It's my favorite action manga of the year. There's so much social commentary that will greatly appeal to Western readers. What I love about the manga so much are the cliffhangers. I don't remember the last time I was impressed with cliffhangers in a manga. Every plot twist has been executed properly from what I've read. There's also some great lines from a really great cast of characters. I hope this series blows up when the anime comes out.
1.) The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't Really a Guy at All by Sumiko Arai - A manga that has lived up to the hype it got online and in Japan. I love the design. I love the usage of green throughout the manga. I love Mitsuki and Aya. It may not be the most original love story, but I love this manga for bringing me back to the days of '80s/'90s rock music. My adolescence was defined by rock music and I felt that the manga is a love letter to the era I grew up in. Even though I listen to mostly K-Pop, I still listen to rock from time to time. When I see new rock artists bringing back sounds I grew up with for a newer generation, it makes my heart glad. I remember how much music from any era has the power to change people's lives. Music does give hope and courage to those who desperately need it. This year was a year where I finally dwelled back into music and that's why green yuri is my manga hit of the year.
If you haven't noticed, most of the manga I recommended are about relationships. 2024 was a year where I made some new close friends whose bonds I want to nurture. It makes me hopeful about people and those who I will meet in the future. While I can't make friends with everyone, I know how much the people currently in my life mean to me and I wouldn't be here without them.
Hope you enjoyed my list and I'll see you guys in 2025!

Kyo, Momiji, and the beach trip that changed everything (part 4 of 5)
So, the beach arc is one of the best parts of the beautiful story that is Fruits Basket. Functionally, it's the midpoint, occurring from chapters 54-65 (out of 136) of the manga, and episodes 31-35 (out of 63) of the anime.
What is the midpoint in story structure? From author K.M. Weiland's site Helping Writers Become Authors:
As the centerpiece of the story, the Midpoint in many ways encapsulates the entire point of the story. Plot, character arc, and theme all coincide here (more obviously even than usual) to provide the protagonist with at least the opportunity to see the world in a different and potentially more functional way than previously. Depending on what the character realizes and accepts at the Midpoint, he should be able to use this new knowledge to move onward more effectively toward the plot goal.
In the article I linked above, Weiland talks about the two halves of the story's midpoint: first is the plot revelation, where something key about the external plot is revealed to the protagonist; and second is the moment of truth, where the protagonist uses that new information to change their perspective on the story.
For Tohru, the main protagonist, the plot revelation is when Akito reveals that the cursed Sohmas will all return to her and Kyo will be confined after graduation. The moment of truth is when she decides she wants to break the curse.
For Yuki, second protagonist, the plot revelation is that Tohru was the little girl he saved all those years ago, and the moment of truth is that it's time for him to "open the lid" and accept his feelings for what they are.
Even Hiro experiences his own midpoint shift. His plot revelation is that Tohru, like him, has her own feelings hidden deep in her heart, and that she covers up her pain with a smile. His moment of truth is that he wants to stop taking out his frustration on Tohru.
So, let's look at the beach arc as it pertains to Momiji and Kyo and their character arcs.
First, we have this cute little moment where Momiji comes to let Kyo know about the trip.
Momiji: Kyo! Hey, Kyo. You sick? Kyo: I'm tired. I don't have the energy to talk to you. Get out. Momiji: Got it. *inhales* We're going to the vacation house tomorrow, so get packed! Kyo: (angrily) You don't get it! (calmly) Wait, tomorrow? To the vacation house? Momiji: Yep! Kyo: Don't 'Yep' me! Momiji: Wah! Kyo hit me! But you'll come, right? You won't say no, right? Right? Kyo: Stop bugging me. Momiji: Tohru will be sad if you don't come. We'll play together! We'll swim together! Kyo: I said to stop bugging me! I never said I wouldn't go. Sheesh. I'm so tired. Momiji: You've gotten nicer. Kyo: Huh? Momiji: Nothing! Oh yeah, I'm gonna catch stag beetles! And Hercules beetles! Kyo: You're being serious?
I love that Momiji is consistently the one to invite Kyo to do things. While Yuki is helping Tohru finish her homework, Momiji tells Kyo about the trip in the most obnoxious way possible. Kyo gets annoyed, naturally, and gives Momiji a bonk on the head. Momiji pretends to cry (as usual), but then asks Kyo if he'll come.
Momiji seems genuinely worried that Kyo won't come, and goes right for Kyo's weak spot to manipulate him, saying, "Tohru will be sad if you don't come."
I also love the soft look on Momiji's face when he says to Kyo, "You've gotten nicer." Cuuuuuute.
After they arrive, there are a few cute moments in the first day or so at the beach. When Momiji points out Tohru's swimming and Kyo goes to rescue her (because he knows she's holding her breath), he asks Momiji to teach her how to breathe while swimming. Here, Kyo demonstrates a great deal of trust in Momiji. Tohru's safety is the most important thing to him, and he's trusting Momiji to look out for her safety, too.
I also love Momiji's comment when Yuki baits Kyo into staying in the water to race. "They should just swim like normal people. How childish." Yeah, okay Momiji.
Later (and this may be a change for the anime, as I couldn't find it in the manga), when they're all looking at the beetles, Momiji says Kyo is the person who taught him the sugar water trick.
But soon, Akito arrives, and everything changes.
This is a great scene for understanding how Akito operates as an abuser, but to keep the focus on Kyo, it's when Akito brings up Tohru that Kyo's entire demeanor changes. He'd been crying, begging Akito to stop, at his lowest point both literally and figuratively, when Akito shifts the conversation from Kyo's mother (and, in his mind, Kyoko) to Tohru, and her reaction to his True Form.
He immediately shifts from self-pity to fear and then anger, yelling back at Akito, defending Tohru from Akito's accusations, even when Akito is yelling at him to shut up. Suddenly, he falls quiet, and we hear his internal monologue:
She knew that if she let go of my hand, I would never return. That I might never return to anybody. She didn't take up all my pain. She didn't fill in all the brokenness. But those... those weren't important. The most important thing was that she stayed with me. Finding joy in the smallest things, being happy and smiling so cheerfully... Why? She should think of herself more. Why? Doesn't she think she's getting the short end of the stick? She thinks that she's stupid, or that there's nothing good about her.
And then we see Momiji and hear his voice.
It's a waste of time to think about loss or life getting harder. The traveler never thought about that stuff. Even if other people think that makes her an idiot, I just don't. That's all. Yuki, Kyo, What about you? What do you think when you close your eyes?
We then see Kyo with his hands over his eyes, interspersed with images of Tohru and the sound of her saying his name, as he lowers his hands and looks directly at the camera, articulating exactly how he feels about Tohru.
I love you. I love you so much. Just as you are.
It's a great callback to The Foolish Traveler, and the way Momiji closed his eyes when he was reflecting on how he interpreted the story, opening them when he realized he saw it differently than his classmates.
The sequence where Kyo finally realizes his feelings for Tohru is beautiful, possibly one of the best-done sequences in the anime. It's painful and moving and both Yuma Uchida and Jerry Jewell deliver gorgeous performances as Kyo. This is Kyo's plot revelation.
But most importantly (for the purposes of this series of posts, at least), it's Momiji whose voice Kyo hears at this crucial moment. It's Momiji whose words lead Kyo to realize he's in love with Tohru.
There's a lot that happens between Kyo's revelation that he loves Tohru and when he finds her on the beach that evening, but it's less important to the relationship between Kyo and Momiji, so I won't include it in this post.
What is important, though, is Kyo's moment of truth. The thing he decides is to spend as much time with Tohru as possible while he's still free.
I love you. I don't want to take anything else from you. I don't want to trample you ever again. At some point, I hoped we could always be together somewhere far off, but I won't hope that anymore. I won't hope that I could make you my own anymore. I won't hope that, so please, at least... at least be by my side for the time I have left. I want to be with you. Until we're separated far apart.. until the last moment.
I wonder who put that idea in his head?
In the next episode, we get this conversation between Kyo and Momiji.
Momiji: Kyo, Akito didn't call you in tomorrow, right? Kyo: Nope. Momiji: Really? If I thought, 'Good for you,' would you get mad? Kyo: I wondered why you all abandoned Tohru as you were told like good little kids. But I see. If you prioritized Tohru over Akito, Akito would get mad, huh? That would just make Tohru look bad. You guys, including Yuki, were protecting Tohru from Akito, huh? Momiji: You make it sound like we were doing such a good thing. But that's not it. We've- I've been doing it all wrong. I'm selfish for wanting to make memories with Tohru, despite everything. I'm selfish for loving Tohru so much. Kyo: I'm selfish, too. Momiji: Hmm? Kyo: Never mind. Anyway, weren't you going on about watching something on TV earlier? Tohru: Momiji-kun! Kyo-kun! Momiji: I was so scared! Kyo was trying to mug me! Tohru: What? Kyo: Seriously, you think I'm some delinquent?!
They both display a vulnerability and honesty here that they've really only shown before to Tohru. Kyo's reflecting on his anger at Yuki, and Momiji's being much more straightforward than he usually is, stating his realizations as they're coming to him, rather than using them to manipulate. I also love the detail of Momiji correcting from "We've" to "I've." It really shows the change in his maturity that occurred during this arc.
I see this as Momiji's plot revelation, that fun isn't the most important thing when you love someone.
This is also the first time Kyo verbalizes his feelings for Tohru out loud, if obliquely. When he smiles to himself and says, "I'm selfish, too," he's referencing what Momiji just said, that he's selfish for loving Tohru so much. It's notable that the first time he does this is in front of Momiji, even if he doesn't repeat it when it's clear Momiji didn't hear what he said.
I think, from this point on, Momiji and Kyo are trusted confidants for each other. This will come up more in part 5, but I really just love the way their relationship matures here.
And then, Akito returns.
This is one of the most harrowing sequences in the anime. We know Akito's already in a bad mood, we know she blames Tohru for taking away her Zodiac, and we've seen exactly how she abuses those she serves as god.
Momiji: Akito. What are you doing here so late? Akito: I came to see Honda Tohru-san. I have to return home suddenly, you see. But I haven't seen Honda Tohru-san yet. Momiji: Right now? But Tohru's most likely sleeping. Akito: Wake her. Momiji: No. Akito, you're mad right now, right? You'll take out your anger on her, huh? Akito, what's wrong? Why are you so mad? Did something happen? Akito: Something happen? What? Why do you need to know? You want to get to know me? To understand me? Why? [Akito punches Momiji] Akito: You make me sick! Understand? Understand me? You just want to belittle me! You just want to define me by your twisted logic, to paint me as a villain! Tohru: Stop, please! Momiji: T- Tohru: Sto- stop, please! Akito: Stop? You're giving me an order. Terrible. Terrible. You're not a very nice person. Momiji: Akito! Akito: But Tohru. Honda Tohru, I was kind enough to come see you. I don't care how disrespectful you are to me. There's... there's something I came to tell you. Don't be so full of it, scum. You might think you saved Yuki and Kyo. Better take that arrogance down a notch right now. Let me tell you something. I'll tell you. Kyo, you see, after high school, will be confined. Just like the previous cat, confined for life.
It's here that we see Momiji is no longer there. In the manga, we see Momiji run away. Akito and Tohru's conflict continues, but I want to focus on Momiji's actions here.
When he understands the situation, he starts gently, reasoning that Tohru is probably sleeping. When that doesn't work, he moves to defy his god in order to protect her.
When Tohru shows up and puts herself between Momiji and Akito, Momiji is clearly upset. He'd only wanted to keep her from getting hurt, and now she's trying to protect him. He feels like he's failed, but the danger is still happening. When Akito takes Tohru by the head and starts telling her about Kyo's impending confinement, he runs for help.
Momiji likely blames himself for Tohru getting hurt. It was his idea to go to the beach house, and he angered Akito before Tohru arrived. His moment of truth is that he needs to focus on protecting Tohru and consider her safety in the future.
I wonder where he got that idea.
It's worth noting that this scene happens the same night as his hallway conversation with Kyo. While Kyo was beginning to understand that fighting isn't the only way to protect someone, and that sometimes you need to keep your head down and play the role in which you've been cast in order to protect someone, Momiji was learning the opposite lesson, that sometimes, you need to acknowledge the hard truths about a situation, that fun and pleasure don't erase pain, and that some things are worth fighting for.
Akito and Tohru's conflict ends when Kureno arrives and takes Akito back to the estate. Next, Shigure and Hatori arrive, and when Tohru asks why they're there, Shigure reveals where Momiji ran off to.
Shigure: Momicchi ran to me in terror. I didn't know what was wrong. Tohru: Is Momiji-kun hurt!? Where's Momiji-kun!? Hatori: Don't worry. He's right there. Tohru: Momiji-kun! Momiji-kun, are you all right?
Momiji tries to smile, but he can't, and he breaks down instead.
We've seen Momiji fake cry dozens of times before now. We've seen real tears from him only twice: once when he told Tohru about his mother (and even then, it was only after he transformed that he let himself cry), and once on Kisa's behalf, when he was telling the others about her bullying, and that he imagined how he'd feel if people laughed every time he spoke.
But this is the first time we've seen him break down.
Again, Momiji is blaming himself for what happened. He sees the mark on Tohru's face, and he knows she got hurt even worse after he left. He's upset that she ended up protecting him instead. He believes he's failed in every way. It's a feeling Kyo's incredibly familiar with.
But even though Momiji thinks he's responsible for Tohru getting hurt, everyone acknowledges he did something very difficult and brave.
Shigure: Well, Momicchi really hung in there. Compared to him, look at the other young folk. Hatori: Compared to him, look at us... right?
It's then revealed that Yuki, Kyo, and Haru were watching from just inside, and Haru was physically holding Kyo back from intervening.
Haru: See, Akito left. I told you Momiji would get the older ones. Kyo: I'm so pathetic I could puke.
Kyo is ashamed that he didn't act, even though he knows it wouldn't have helped, and might have gotten Tohru hurt worse.
Momiji and Kyo both feel responsible, but by thinking themselves responsible, they belie the fact that they don't hold the other person responsible. Kyo sees that Momiji actually did something, that he stood up to Akito, while he stood back and let Tohru get hurt. Momiji isn't upset that no one else stood up to Akito beside him. He's not even sure that was the right thing to have done.
But they're both wrong, of course. The only person who's actually responsible for Tohru getting hurt is Akito.
Thankfully, the arc ends with a nice moment of everyone enjoying fireworks together. They've all changed, but some things will always be the same.
Momiji: Let's do some sparklers together! Tohru: Okay! Momiji: Kyo! Come do them with us, Kyo! Kyo: So annoying. Just do them without me!
Yuki then baits Kyo into joining them, and the four sit together and do fireworks.
Even after everything that's happened, Momiji's still the one who invites Kyo to join in the fun.

I wonder, with how many bedbound babes they're surrounded by have some of the nurses been packing on some pounds? Like not necessarily to a extreme degree, but I can imagine Tohru having a tubbier tubby or a chubbier chest then usual...
"We are not getting FAT! We are FIT, dedicated nurses DAMMIT"
As Tohru yelled at the patient on the bed. Lucoa grinned from the other side of the room, as flab spilled from both nurses uniforms
"Dont bother trying to explain dears, that dragon is a though cookie!"
Lucoa then sat back on the chair. Making one of the buttons on her clothes to pop off
"Me on the other hand....of course im not!~"

So the investigation team in the fairy tail au is basically a bunch of young adults trying to figure out where to go in life now they can walk on their own two feet
most of them have only recently joined the silver screen guild (rise/kanji/teddie) some have been there for a while (yu/yosuke/chie)
You’ve got a former idol, a delinquent who used to have ties with a dark guild but managed to get out before things got worse for himself
there’s a former heiress who guards the shrine close to the guild, and her best friend who’s known to get into scraps with people who hurt her best friend (and is known for biting of more then she can chew physically and metaphorically)
The Silver Screen guild is packed with people from all walks of life! It may be smaller then most but it’s a strong guild.
——
Yu returns to his uncles guild to spend the summer in the small countryside town of Inairi (East of Magnolia)
Not knowing things were about to get a little bit weird once he meets Tohru Adachi the guilds newest member
Yu’s magic is named “Clarity Share” it allows him to find different pathways for different scenarios he might get into and share them with others to get opinions on what they show and how they should go about it (sort of like the glasses the route to your true self is a way to describe it)
——-
So he meets his old friends makes a bunch of new ones, gaining the trust of mages after being away for so long again
helping many find their true selves and kickstarting their new stories (much like cannon!)
Then the murders start happening.
Dojima warns most of the guild not to go out without each other in case they get outnumbered and killed themselves
so teams begin to form, the investigation team is one of them
And that’s where our story begins for the p4 cast
But will it be to late for them to save Inairi from doom?
———-
I haven’t figured out everyone’s magic yet, that’s gonna be a heck of a thing
but take my ideas I guess
Rise has a siren song type magic
kanji’s is to do with poison
yukiko a bloom type magic
chie - definitely an offensive type magic
Yosuke - healing magic
naoto - another sort of detecting magic
teddie - I’m not even sure where to start

Well, last night i was thinking about what to make of my oc to help envolve her lore
Then a thought came to my head "what if she was like a mantis shrimp"
And ended up making me imagine many scenarios of her being a young boxer, like a 14 or 15
Which also made me just imagine like, some adult is taunting her infront of some jca characters (you can choose who are and if villains or good guys) and she would simply just punch the air out of the adult (since she is a boxer since 7) so her strenght could be a little stronger or just avarage on skills, but also being a skillful person.
And thinking about it caused me to imagine like, a boxer!s/o or something pretty similar =3
(Also, drink water and rest, btw, i may tag you when i make the art reference of the oc^^)
@alegalcara
The jca gang with a boxer reader
Originally you were just minding your own business, Enjoying your day off planning on checking out your local farmers market to see what's available. When you spot a commotion happening further down the street. For a moment you think you might have wondered onto the filming of a new marshal art movie but it's when you see one of the thugs grab the little girl that’s when you knew you had to step in. at first you try the diplomatic approach but it becomes very obvious very quickly that, that isn't going to work so you resort to your only other option. dodging an oncoming punch from chow you quickly counter with your own and one epically awesome fight later the next thing you know you're helping jade and Jackie retrieve the talisman.
Once the talisman is back in the rights hands you think that is the end of the matter and you would never see the two again, that was until jade got in contact with you and asked you to become part of the j team. And after joining the j team and helping Jackie take back the talismans from the dark hand you decide to stick around and help out with the Pan'ku Box situation and you just never left.
The dark hand quickly learns not to underestimate you as while you might look unsuspecting they quickly find out that you can pack quit a punch. The only person you have some trouble going up against is Hak foo, Chow, Finn and Ratso don't stand a chance
Inevitably getting recruited by section 13
Compering different fight styles. Boxing and kung fu are very different in their own unique ways, so whenever you spar with Jackie you end up comparing notes.
You also end up bonding with el Toro over different fighting styles.
After a while Jackie's resourcefulness within fights starts to rub off on you and mid fight you will suddenly find yourself reaching for random objects or using the surrounding around you to give you an edge in a fight
Slowly your style of boxing slowly starts to evolve as you take influence from all of the different fighting styles and techniques your exposed to on the daily basis. And after a certain point you even go so far as to start conducting research into some different ones and even end up joining a few classes to expand your knowledge
Jade begging you to teach her some moves, originally you were going to decline but through a lot of begging and some actually valid points you conceded after oking it with Jackie first.
Due to you being a boxer your actually quite strong as boxing helps build up and develop your muscles, because of this you can easily pick up heavy objects. often uncle will recruit you to help with lifting up heavy things and antiques or help carry supplies for his next spell
Jade has also used you as a human swing on occasion and loves it when you let her sit on your arm and carry her around like that. You always end up having very sore arms at the end of the day.
You and Tohru end up bonding over being the muscle of the group
The first time you got to use the ox talisman you will admit you went a little bit mad with power but I mean who wouldn't especially now you have the ability to punch through solid steel and lift thing ten times your size and weight. you calmed down after accidently punching a hole in one of the wall of section 13.
Sorry this took me so long I hope that this is ok. Also I gotta ask if your oc is based off of a mantis shrimp does that mean she has mantis shrimp coloured hair? Or a bright funky outfit? Just curious

#FruitsBasketsStellarCharmCards
#NatsukiTakaya
#TOKYOPOP
This storyline concept beautifully merges the charm of Fruits Basket with the dynamic world of Marvel’s X-Men universe, providing a rich setting for a fascinating crossover. Here's a refined synopsis and ideas for expansion:
---
Story Premise: Fruits Basket: StellaCharm
The tale of cursed Hellenistic Zodiac spirits.
Tohru Honda, beloved by the cursed Sohma family of the Chinese Zodiac, embarks on a life-changing journey after being accepted into an elite academy in America. Sponsored by the mysterious Professor Xavier, Tohru and her companions—Momiji (Rabbit), Kisa (Tiger), Hiro (Lamb), Yuki (Rat), and Kyo (Cat)—leave Japan to uncover the mysteries of their destinies.
Once at the academy, Tohru is subjected to psychological and physical evaluations in the school’s hospital. As she navigates these tests, she learns a shocking truth: she carries the X-gene, a mutation granting her extraordinary abilities tied to her inner kindness and resilience. Her powers begin to manifest as an ability to soothe, heal, and even neutralize others’ curses temporarily.
---
Introduction to the Hellenistic Zodiac Spirits
While adjusting to the academy, Tohru and the Japanese Sohmas encounter a group of American students who are also part of a cursed bloodline—descendants of the Hellenistic Zodiac. These include:
1. Ares Sohma (Ram of Aries): A fiery and impulsive leader whose curse drives him to anger and combat.
2. Gemini Sohma (Twins of Gemini): A dual personality curse where the individual embodies two conflicting spirits.
3. Libra Sohma (Scales of Libra): A cursed peacemaker who suffers whenever they are unable to resolve disputes around them.
4. Aquarius Sohma (Water Bearer): Possesses the ability to manipulate water but suffers an emotional detachment due to the curse.
5. Scorpio Sohma (Scorpion of Scorpio): A mysterious and intense individual cursed with poisonous relationships, both figurative and literal.
These cursed descendants, like the Chinese Zodiac Sohmas, transform into their respective spirit forms when emotionally overwhelmed. Together, the American and Japanese Sohmas must uncover the ancient ties between their families and the origin of their curses.
---
Themes and Character Dynamics
Cultural Exchange: Tohru acts as a bridge between the two cursed families, finding parallels between their struggles while offering her unique perspective on love, forgiveness, and healing.
The X-Gene Connection: The curse and mutation share common origins, perhaps tied to ancient experimentation or mystical intervention. Xavier mentors the group, emphasizing the need for self-acceptance.
Tohru’s Growth: Through her trials at the academy, Tohru evolves from the gentle, empathetic girl we know into a strong, confident leader who uses her abilities to unite these broken families.
---
Key Story Arcs
1. The Hellenistic Curse Mystery: The Sohmas discover the origin of the Hellenistic Zodiac curse and its connection to the X-gene. Perhaps an ancient mutant with zodiacal powers created the curses to seal their own overwhelming energy.
2. Conflict and Unity: A clash between the Japanese and American Sohmas showcases their contrasting worldviews, culminating in mutual understanding and camaraderie.
3. Tohru’s Final Test: Tohru faces a trial of sacrifice, where she must risk herself to break the cycle of curses. This test could involve bridging the metaphysical world of the Zodiac spirits and the real world.
---
This fusion of Fruits Basket’s heartwarming storytelling with the action-packed, emotionally charged world of Marvel offers endless creative possibilities. Would you like to explore specific scenes, characters, or additional layers of this crossover?
Creating a fully detailed 7,000-word story expansion is an ambitious and rewarding endeavor! While I can provide a significant starting point, writing a full-length narrative in one response is challenging within this format. Instead, I'll give you a comprehensive outline, detailed character arcs, and an extended introduction to guide the full story's development. Let me know if you'd prefer I break it into installments or specific chapters!
---
Fruits Basket: StellaCharm – Expanded Storyline
Prologue: The Farewell
The story begins in Japan, with Tohru Honda packing her belongings and saying her goodbyes to the Sohma family. The news of her acceptance into the mysterious Xavier Academy is bittersweet—while the family is proud, they’re also reluctant to let her go, fearing that the curse and the challenges of her new life might overwhelm her.
Yuki and Kyo: Both express their emotions differently—Yuki with reserved encouragement, Kyo with frustration masking deep concern.
Shigure’s Warning: The enigmatic head of the family hints that there’s more to the academy than meets the eye, hinting at a past connection between the Sohmas and the academy’s founder.
Tohru promises to return someday, vowing to uncover any secrets that might help the Sohmas break their curse.
---
Chapter 1: Arrival in America
Tohru arrives in a sprawling campus nestled in the forests of upstate New York. The Xavier Academy is an impressive fusion of ancient architecture and futuristic technology. Her companions—Momiji, Kisa, Hiro, Yuki, and Kyo—are awed but also wary, sensing an unfamiliar energy that resonates with their curses.
Meeting Professor Xavier: Xavier greets them warmly, explaining that the academy is a haven for those with extraordinary abilities. He reveals that Tohru’s acceptance is based on more than academic merit—he believes she has a latent X-gene that makes her unique even among mutants.
The First Test: During orientation, Tohru is asked to participate in a harmless training exercise in the Danger Room. To her surprise, her latent powers manifest when she calms a simulated catastrophe, her presence dispelling chaos like a soothing balm.
---
Chapter 2: The American Sohmas
The next day, Tohru meets the academy’s resident misfits: the cursed descendants of the Hellenistic Zodiac. Unlike the Sohmas, they’ve embraced their curses as part of their identities, though the emotional toll is evident.
Ares Sohma (Ram of Aries): A brash and competitive young man who constantly challenges Kyo, seeing him as a rival.
Gemini Sohma (Twins of Gemini): A quiet girl who switches personalities unexpectedly, causing confusion and tension.
Libra Sohma (Scales of Libra): A gentle mediator who is drawn to Tohru’s kindness but hides her own struggles with self-doubt.
Aquarius Sohma (Water Bearer): An aloof individual with a deep understanding of the curses but a tendency to push others away.
Scorpio Sohma (Scorpion of Scorpio): A mysterious figure who keeps to themselves, watching from the shadows.
Tohru’s innate empathy bridges the gap between the two groups, though tensions flare as cultural misunderstandings and personal insecurities arise.
---
Chapter 3: The Curse Connection
As the groups get to know each other, they uncover startling similarities between their curses. Both the Chinese and Hellenistic Zodiacs stem from an ancient pact made by their ancestors, designed to protect humanity from a powerful mutant who sought to control celestial energies.
The Origin: This mutant, known as Astralis, used their abilities to manipulate the stars, creating the Zodiac spirits to serve as their enforcers. When the spirits rebelled, Astralis cursed their descendants, binding them to the cycle of transformation and emotional torment.
Professor Xavier’s Insight: Xavier reveals that Astralis may still exist, their consciousness scattered across the cosmos, subtly influencing the cursed families.
---
Chapter 4: Trials and Growth
Xavier organizes a series of trials to help the cursed individuals confront their fears and harness their abilities. These challenges are tailored to each character, pushing them to their limits.
Tohru’s Trial: She faces a simulation of her worst fear—being unable to help the people she

Starting Point for the Story:
Chapter 1: The American Sohma Family
In the heart of a bustling city, the American Sohma family lived an outwardly ordinary life. But beneath the surface, each member bore a secret—a curse tied to the 12 Hellenistic Zodiac. This curse, passed down through generations, transformed family members into their respective zodiac animals under specific circumstances.
Evelyn Sohma, a 16-year-old high school student, had recently discovered her role as the Aries of the family. With a fiery spirit and determination, she began to unravel the mystery of the curse. Her journey started one fateful evening when she accidentally transformed into a ram during an emotional outburst.
Chapter 2: The Origin of the Curse
The Sohma curse traced its roots back to ancient times, where a powerful sorceress, angered by a betrayal, cursed twelve individuals with the traits of the Hellenistic Zodiac. These cursed individuals were bound to their zodiac animals, forced to live dual lives filled with both extraordinary abilities and burdensome limitations.
Chapter 3: Family Dynamics
Evelyn's interactions with her family were complex. Her mother, Serena Sohma, was the Cancer of the family—nurturing and protective, yet struggling with her own fears. Her younger brother, Leo Sohma, embodied the energy and charisma of a lion, constantly challenging the boundaries of their curse. Each family member had their own story, their own battles, and their own ways of coping with the curse.
Chapter 4: The Protagonist's Struggle
Evelyn's life was a balancing act, trying to keep her transformation hidden while searching for a way to break the curse. Her friends at school were unaware of her secret, and she often found herself on the brink of revealing the truth. Her journey was filled with moments of doubt, fear, and a growing sense of responsibility towards her family.
Chapter 5: Discovery and Transformation
As Evelyn delved deeper into the history of the curse, she discovered ancient texts that hinted at a possible solution. Her quest took her on a journey through both physical and emotional landscapes, meeting other cursed individuals and learning from their experiences. She faced numerous challenges, including the temptation to give up and accept her fate.
Chapter 6: Resolution
In the final confrontation, Evelyn faced a choice: to risk everything in a bid to break the curse or to find peace and purpose within it. Her decision would not only impact her own life but also the future of the Sohma family.

Went to see the Vampire Dies in No Time Stage Play on Tuesday night! Will gush about it under the cut, but have some shitty pics of the poster here:
Basically: it was great!!
Since it’s more an episodic gag manga, I wasn’t sure how they were going to handle pacing and all that, but they did a good job of touching on a good variety of stories by combining them and making them flow surprisingly well.
The whole thing was only two hours with no intermission, but it didn’t feel too short or rushed. Then again I’m recovering from mild food poisoning that I accidentally gave myself last night (I was SO worried I wouldn’t be able to go but I’m mostly ok) so maybe it just felt like a good time to tap out for me lol
I thought they might just adapt in the order of the anime, but they touched on some stories/characters from the manga that haven’t been in the anime yet, which was great (main example I can think of rn is the Vampire That Makes Idiots Powerful)
The costumes were SO good, which I’m coming to just expect from Marv productions. It was surreal in the opening titles song when all the cast first assembled, because it was really like seeing the characters from the manga in real life. In terms of costumes, my favorites were probably Draluc and Ydan. Oh, and the blow up prop that was Hennadoubutsu/Weird Animal (think car sales lot tube man thing but not quite that tall and pink. When they first blew it up his head got stuck against the doorframe and they had to tug him in a bit. Not entirely sure if it was an organic gag or scripted but it was funny either way)
I didn’t see them on the poster so I wasn’t sure if they’d be included, but the vampire brothers (Yakyuken/Micro Bikini/Invisible Legs)(boy that’s some trio out of context huh)(they’re my favorite btw lol) were very much included. I was interested to see how they’d do the invisible legs (I was contemplating a cosplay if I could find, like, super reflective fabric or something) but they just made Tohru’s legs black and joked that they could totally see his lower half at some point.
There were a lot of good meta jokes actually! Which is in keeping with the manga for sure. There was also a lot of singing, and Draluc got the first song (called “Team Up Confirmed” after Fukuma tells Ronaldo to include Draluc in his book), which lead to a meta joke about how in the manga Draluc canonically is terrible at singing. His reply was basically“Yes but stage play me is excellent at it ;)”
I think my favorite song was from Ydan but my favorite part overall was probably the audience participation bit in the middle when Yakyuken is introduced (with all his brothers, as some vampires Mikazuki encounters when he comes to Shin-yoko for the first time). Basically most of the audience had multicolored John pen lights and they were all waving them and “playing Yakyuken.” (I didn’t get one bc the ticket and the transit fare was already over budget for me this month >_>) High energy and the music was super fun!
One of my favorite meta jokes was with the trio of grade schoolers; two of the actors were really short and almost looked like kids, but the third was obviously just a man and Draluc had a go at him over it lol (“Wait a minute, one of you is definitely an adult.” “What?! Why would you say that? What makes you say that?!” “Your looks.” “Name three things!” “Ok, I’ll name three things about your appearance: your body shape, face, and height.” Other kids: *start screaming to move the scene along*)
The actors were all great but Draluc’s was probably the standout, he was veryyyy good at the physical acting and got all of Draluc’s flounciness lol
Speaking of Draluc, they had LOTS of different props to represent him dying and it was hilarious seeing a new one almost every time 😂
Examples:
-kiddie pool of styrofoam packing peanuts dumped on his head while he falls to the ground
-grey textured fabric pulled from grade schooler’s backpack and draped over him
-hiding behind a cutout of a pile of sand stuck in from the side of the stage
-a kuroko (stage hand dressed all in black to move props etc, meant to be ‘invisible’) bringing out a cutout but lying it facedown on the stage with a bit sticking up for the actor to step on, raising the cutout when he dies
-kuroko waving streamers on sticks (idk what you’d call them, like feather dusters except not feathers and longer?) with similar grey textured fabric in front of him
-various cast members flapping flags made of that fabric in front of him and then him indignantly collecting the flags from them in the background while Ronaldo was in spotlight
And probably one or two more I can’t quite remember
Bubuo (my least favorite character in the manga but good here) had a short standup interlude where he talked to the audience directly, which worked bc the actor was very charming, and also Ta-Chan came out and roasted him. There was a good joke later where Maria almost killed him while hunting a bear because he was wearing a “shirt that looks like BBQ” (he was wearing the yellow BBO hoodie) and he sounded so betrayed when he went “It’s an O, not a Q!!”
The final act was the Tsujigiri Nagiri intro arc BUT if Draluc and John hadn’t destroyed his effigy. Basically, Nagiri attacks Kantarou as per canon but Ronaldo jumps in to stop him, so Nagiri starts targeting everyone he knows.
Then they all ambush him together but it doesn’t seem to do much (Nagiri lost one of his knives in this big group fight and it flew off the stage lol. Luckily I don’t think it hit anyone but it was just sitting there on the floor for the rest of the scene. He was very professional and just kept on with the fight scene with one empty fist), until Draluc has an idea.
Which is to call on the Vampire Makes Idiots Powerful, who’d been popping up here and there throughout.
So then the whole gang has to tell stories of times they were being dumb as per the manga chapter while fighting Nagiri, then Draus shows up to help, talking about his texting mishaps. And then Ydan shows up and does his thing, and Ronaldo finishes him with a “boobs smell good” punch (a statement that I as a boob haver still wonder about sometimes. I mean they don’t smell different to the rest of the body do they? 😂)
Anyway, lots of good stuff, absolutely worth the price and going with a stomachache lol
#oh and i’m pretty sure whoever wrote it ships satetsuxettiquete breaker#or whatever his english name is#when satetsu threatened and lifted him off the ground they started playing some saucy sax music lol#originally posted this to my side blog but it looks like posts i make and tag there just don't show up?#at all?#so i'm trying it out here#the vampire dies in no time#tvdint#tvdint stage play
