On this day one of the most iconic games of the Nintendo 64 turns 20, GoldenEye 007. The game was developed by Rare, the same studio that made Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark and Blast Corps for the same system. GoldenEye 007 is a first person shooter based off the GoldenEye movie released in 1995. Video game adaptation of movies has a tendency to poor representations of the franchise they are trying to emulate. GoldenEye 007 is an exception to this rule and is my most beloved childhood games. You have a large arsenal of weapons at your disposal ranging from pistols, automatics, rocket launchers and my favourite remote mines. This single player was extremely fun and had great replay value. However, the best part of the game was its split screen multiplayer that could cater up to four players. Friendships were put to the test in GoldenEye multiplayer and screen cheating to find the location of the other player was common practice. Then there was the game-breaking character Oddjob, who was the smallest character, making targeting him difficult. GoldenEye 007 had many other great features which were unlocked by completing certain single player objectives. Big head mode and paint ball mode were among the most popular. As far as remasters goes this game is at the top of my list. A reboot of the game was made for the Wii, however, it did not have the flair or allure of the original. What is your favourite GoldenEye 007 feature? On this day in 1991 the Sega icon Sonic the Hedgehog was released in North America on the Genesis. The character, Sonic, was created from a design internal competition at Sega. The company wanted to come up with a new mascot after the demise of their old, out-dated mascot, Alex the Kidd. Sonic the Hedgehog is a high-paced platformer that emphasises speed as its primary mechanic. The gameplay and collection dynamics were extremely simple, collect rings for health, complete stages within a time limit and defeat a boss at the end of each stage. Sonic the Hedgehog was critically and commercially success. It set the Sega Mega Drive as a key player in the 16-bit era. Many sequels were spawning and Sonic the Hedgehog is still a large video game franchise for Sega. The easiest way to get your retro Sonic the Hedgehog fix is by Sega’s new fan service Sega Forever that allows you to download a selection of games for free on iOS and android devices. #OnThisDayGaming #ThisDayInGaming #VideoGameHistory #TodayInVideoGames #VideoGamesToday #GamingHistory #ConsoleWars #Sonic #Robotnik #DrRobotnik #SonicTheHedgehog #Sonic1 #Sega #SonicTeam #SegaForever

On this day in 2005 Destroy All Humans! was released on the Xbox Original and PlayStation 2 in North America (Europe and Australia: 24/06/2005). You play as the alien, Cryptosporidium 137, from the Furon Empire who has come to Earth to extract human DNA that will be used for cloning the Furon people. Constant war with other life forms and a heavy reliance on nuclear weapons have left the Furon species infertile and without gentiles. Facilitating the need for human DNA that coincidently happens to contain reminisce of Furon DNA. The game takes place in the 1950s and is a parody of the values, culture and politics of the time. You travel to a number of locations to complete missions in fictional settings and collect that all precious DNA for the brain stem of humans. The game was met with positive reviews across the board (Metacritic: Xbox- 76%, PS2, 74%). The general consensus from the media was that the level design and destructible environments were highly commended as was the story which contained humor and satire to tell an engaging tale. The game was later released for the PlayStation 4 through the Online PlayStation store. Many sequels were spawned after the success of the original game, however, in this gamers opinion, the original is my best. #OnThisDayGaming #ThisDayInGaming #VideoGameHistory #TodayInVideoGames #VideoGamesToday #GamingHistory #Developer #Publisher #DestroyAllHumans! #DestroyAllHumans #Xbox #XboxOriginal #PlayStation #PlayStation2 #THQ #PandemicStudios #LocomotiveGames #SandblastGames

Today marks the birth of the ninja franchise Shinobi for home consoles which launched for the Sega Master System in Japan on this day in 1988. You play as the ninja Joe Musashi, your goal, to rescue ninjitsu students from a terrorist group. The action side-scroller takes place in the modern era and has you fighting your way through five missions each consisting of between three-four stages. Shinobi was originally an arcade game and adjustments had to be made to make the game more forgiving for consoles. The one hit-kill mechanic was changed to a health bar. This allowed the player to sustain more damage before losing a life. Additionally some of the mandatory completion requirements were removed such as the need to recue the hostages. Rescuing hostages in the console version allowed the player to upgrade their short and long-range weapons as well as unlocking bonus stages that had power-up bonuses, which could be used during gameplay. The game was highly popular and ported to a number of other consoles including the PC Engine and the Nintendo Entertainment System. There were also a number of sequels that were released for Mega Drive/Genesis, Game Gear, Saturn, PlayStation 2 and 3DS. #OnThisDayGaming #ThisDayInGaming #VideoGameHistory #TodayInVideoGames #VideoGamesToday #GamingHistory #Developer #Publisher #Sega #SegaArcadePort #SegaArcade #Shinobi #SegaMasterSystem #MasterSystem #Nintendo #NintendoEntertainmentSystem #NES #PCEngine

Super Mario Odyssey: First and foremost I am huge Nintendo fan and have been since the earlier 90s. Mario the mascot for the Nintendo platform and I am excited for ta new sandbox Mario game, which we have not seen since 2002 with Mario Sunshine on the Nintendo Gamecube. The possession mechanism is particularly interesting and opens up a world of possibilities with environmental interaction. The game appears to take strengths from previous Mario games particularly Mario Sunshine, New Super Mario Bros and Mario Galaxy Combine them in a way that allows for a varied gameplay experience, with both 2D and 3D platforming elements. Super Mario Odyssey will be released globally for the Nintendo Switch on the 27th of October. Xbox Original games are becoming backwards compatible on the Xbox One. There is no word whether original xbox discs will work and if region locking will affect the ability to use discs as the Original Xbox was region locked. OG Xbox game discs are no longer in circulation so I believe Xbox Original library games will be available for purchase on the Xbox Marketplace or on Xbox’s Game Pass subscription service. Cuphead is an aesthetically pleasing game with an art style playing homage to 70/80s cartoons. We have seen this game at past E3s however, now we finally have a release date, September 29 for Xbox One and PC. Cuphead is a 2-D side scroller with a focus on boss battles. This is a highly unique experience and a visual masterpiece that anyone, gamers and non-gamers alike can be captivated by. I cannot recommend this game enough and I will be a day one adopter of Cuphead. At this stage there is no word on a physical release, however, it will available on the Xbox Marketplace and on Steam or Windows Store for PC. After the EA Play Conference I am very excited for Star Wars Battlefront 2. Gamers should be very happy with how EA Dice has developed the game and its content. The first game Star Wars: Battlefront was met with complaints and outrage from gamers due to its lack in single player content, paid seasons pass and underwhelming heroes. It feels like E.A, instead of ignoring its vocal fans and created the sequel as they see it should be, they have made a community sequel in the sense that all previous complaints have been heard and rectified. The sequel contains a compelling story following Iden Versio of Inferno Squadron who seeks to avenge the death of the emperor. The multiplayer function was the core experience of the original and it feels like E.A and the development team have made some strong changes to the environments that feel less baron and more true to the Star Wars franchise. The heroes in Star Wars Battlefront II appear to more specialised then the previous game with abilities and skills that can shift the tide of the battle. Most importantly, Electronic Arts will release free updates and ongoing support for years after its release. Star Wars Battlefront 2 is due to be released globally November 17. A new original intellectual property for Electronic Arts was announced today (AEST), A Way Out, from the same brilliant minds that brought us Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. An interesting concept forcing player to coordinate their efforts towards a single goal, a prison break. The game is a two player only experience that can be played through split screen or online multiplayer. Each player is playing simultaneously. Experiencing and manipulate events from the perspective of Leo and Vincent. Although we have only seen a trailer, the game looks promising and will provide a unique experience. Way Out will be available early 2018. For more information about the game visit https://www.ea.com/games/a-way-out. So tired right now. Getting up at 5AM (AEST) to watch EA’s E3 conference is brutal. So far I am enjoying Battlefront II’s multiplayer gameplay. I am underwhelmed by FIFA and NBA Live. Although, I am not a sports game fan. I am also very excited to see how BioWare’s new IP Anthem evolves. #OnThisDayGaming #ThisDayInGaming #VideoGameHistory #TodayInVideoGames #VideoGamesToday #E3 #E32017 #EAConference #ElectronicArts #StarWars #StarWarsBattlefront #StarWarsBattleFront2

On this day in 2011, the much-anticipated Duke Nukem Forever was released in Europe, Australia and New Zealand (N.A: 14th June 2011, JP: 29th March 2012). The game had a very long development time, with the sequel to Duke Nukem, being announced as far back as 1997. The game got continually delayed and in 2001 3D Realms (the developer) announced the game would be released when it was done, no release date was given. News about the game remained quiet until 2007 when a trailer was released. However, once again, news about the release went quiet until 2010, over 13 years since the game was originally announced. 2K Games revealed that the sequel was to be developed by Gearbox Software. Much to the shock of Duke Nukem fans the game was actually released the following year. Duke Nukem is known for his macho demeanour and crude attitude, which he epitomised in the original Duke Nukem 3D. Duke Nukem Forever was no different in this way, however persona of the character came across as out-dated and cliché. The gameplay and graphics were also received poorly both critically and commercially. The game seemed unpolished and was not the sequel that fans were hoping for. This is one worth missing. #OnThisDayGaming #ThisDayInGaming #VideoGameHistory #TodayInVideoGames #VideoGamesToday #GamingHistory #Developer #Publisher #DukeNukem #DukeNukem3D #DukeNukemForever #3DRealms #GearBox #2K #BadVideoGame #Xbox #Xbox360 #PlayStation #PlayStation3 #PC #UnrealEngine #FirstPersonShooter

On this day in 2003 Donkey Kong Country was released for the Gameboy Advanced. This was the second time Donkey Kong Country, originally released for the Super Nintendo, was port to a handheld. The GBA version had increased brightness; this of course came at a cost of reduced contrast and colour saturation. The increased brightness made the picture clearer for a screen that was not backlit. The GBA version also came with a feature not available in previous iterations, multiplayer functionality. DKC was developed by Rare who has a solid history developing games with Nintendo’s Intellectual Properties between 1994-2007. Rare was acquired by Microsoft Studios in 2002 but continued to develop for Nintendo’s handheld devices as Microsoft had no handheld device, meaning there was no conflict of interest or direct competition. This is how Rare came to develop Donkey Kong Country for the Game Boy Advanced as well as Diddy Kong Racing DS and Banjo Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge. There are many ways you can play Donkey Kong Country, it is on the Virtual Console for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. You can also play it on the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advanced and Super Nintendo. #OnThisDayGaming #ThisDayInGaming #VideoGameHistory #TodayInVideoGames #VideoGamesToday #GamingHistory #Developer #Publisher #Nintendo #GameBoy #GameBoyColor #GameBoyAdvanced #SuperNintendo #WiiU #3DS #Rare #RareLtd #MicosoftStudios #VideoGamePort #DonkeyKongCountry

On this day in 1999 Conker’s Pocket Tales was released for the Nintendo Game Boy Color in North America. The game was developed and published by Rare, the same studio that brought us classic video game experiences like Battletoads, Diddy Kong Racing and Banjo Kazooie. Pocket Tales was the second time Conker appeared on as a playable character in a game, the first being Diddy Kong Racing. This game was made to be family friendly and an experience a child could enjoy. The next Conker game Conker’s Bad Fur Day was very adult oriented with foul language, crude jokes, sexualised themes and violence, a complete reversal of Conker’s previous two entries. Originally meant to be as family friendly experience similar to Pocket Tales, Bad Fur Day was redesigned as the family friendly version did not preview well with target audiences as it was too similar to Rare’s other platforming games Like Banjo Kazooie. The fact that Conker’s Pocket Tales had a very luke warm reception at launch receiving an aggregated score of 55% on GameRankings would have also contributed to Rare’s decision to make Bad Fur Day for a mature market. You are not missing much by not playing Conker’s Pocket Tales, if you are going to play a Conker’s game I recommend Conker’s Bad Fur Day, available on the Rare Replay Compilation for the Xbox One. #OnThisDayGaming #ThisDayInGaming #VideoGameHistory #TodayInVideoGames #VideoGamesToday #GamingHistory #Developer #Publisher #Nintendo #Nintendo64 #Rare #RareReplay #Conkers #ConkersPocketTale #ConkersBadFurDay #MatureGame #Gameboycolor #gameboycolour

Today at 12:00am (07/06/17 AEST) Pokken Tournament DX (released date: 22nd September) was announced by the Pokémon Company. The event was broadcasted globally as a Pokémon Direct stream on Nintendo's YouTube channel. Pokken Tournament DX is a port and update of a game originally released on the Wii U in 2016. The game will add a new 3v3 mode and 5 new Pokémon. This will be the third Wii U game ported to the Nintendo Switch. Lego City Under cover was released on the 4th of April (EU: 7th April, Aus: 12th April) and Mario Kart 8 on the 28th of April globally (Switch: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe). The latter sold extremely well, selling nearly half a million in the first few days of Sale. I doubt Pokken Tournament will sell so well. Pokémon fan were hoping for a fully fletched Pokémon RPG such as the a port or update of Pokémon Sun and Moon for the Nintendo 3DS. How do you feel about Pokken Tournament being ported to the Nintendo Switch? #OnThisDayGaming #ThisDayInGaming #VideoGameHistory #TodayInVideoGames #VideoGamesToday #GamingHistory #Developer #Publisher #Nintendo #NintendoWiiU #NintendoSwitch #Pokemon #PokkenTournament #PokkenTournamentDX #Pokken #ThePokemonCompany #PokemonCompany #BandaiNamco #WiiUPort #PokemonDirect #NintendoDirect

On this day in 1993, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening was released in Japan (N.A: August 1993 Europe: 1st December 1993). The game was the first Zelda released on a Nintendo Handheld and the only Zelda game released for the original GameBoy. The game was intended to be a port of SNES title The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past but after only a couple of hours the game developed into an original idea. It is one of only a few Zelda titles not take place in Hyrule and there is only a brief mention of Zelda. The game begins with Link waking up a beach on Koholint Island. Links mission is to acquire eight musical instruments in order to awaken the Wind Fish and escape the island. In order to do this he must explore, navigate through dangerous dungeons and fight a variety of veracious enemies. The game was both critically and commercially success global. In order to give the game longevity within a sales context an updated re-release was made for the GameBoy Color in 1998 which featured colour graphics and an exclusive dungeon. Collectively both games sold approximately 6 million copies. #OnThisDayGaming #ThisDayInGaming #VideoGameHistory #TodayInVideoGames #VideoGamesToday #GamingHistory #Developer #Publisher #Nintendo #Nintendo #Gameboy Color #Gameboy Colour #Gameboy#LegendOfZelda #Zelda #LegendOfZeldaLinksAwakening #LinksAwakening #Link#FlagshipGaming #Flagship #IGN #MasterPiece #onthisdaygaming #todayingaming#videogamehistory #videogames #retroconsole #videogames #gaminghistory#consolewars
