Disgraced and ashamed, he goes on the run, but his powers of prophecy continue to fail him while Apollo is AWOL. So, he begins to search for the god. Instead of finding him, however, Octavian finds the Triumverate. His reputation proceeds him, so he is held captive at first for his augury. As it turns out, they have no use for an augur who can't see the future, so Caligula puts Octavian to work: as his cupbearer. This is a scene set before Burning Maze, as Octavian struggles to reconcile with the fact that Caligula is simply better at playing his own game than he is.

Caligula presents a contradictory sight, laid out languidly on a striped lounge chair in his captain’s hat and sailor’s garb, all while carrying with him the presence of a hunting great white. He should be relaxed, but Octavian’s swum with enough sharks to know that he already smells blood in the water, and his muscles are coiled and primed to strike. For a moment, Octavian’s knees feel wobbly.

The seas are smoother than usual that afternoon, as the sun blazes amber overhead, lightening a seemingly endless lazuline sky. The nearest clouds are so far away, they almost appear to be dangling inches from the horizon, as if they could drive the Julia Drusilla right through them if they chased them down. It’s picture-perfect, and that sits lopsided in Octavian’s chest as Caligula interrupts his thoughts.

“You used to be one of those Camp Jupiter disciples, as I understand it?” It’s a trick question: there is nothing Caligula doesn’t know about him.

Octavian sets down the Southside Fizz he’d ordered at the bar for him, centering it on Caligula’s coaster with only one tremble. And he answers the emperor-god’s question because he is too far beneath him to get away with not responding, no matter how obvious the answer is. “I was, lord.”

Caligula lifts his chin like Octavian has stroked his cropped, platinum hair. Octavian hates that they share that color. “I never liked any of you brats. It’s a miracle you’re so well-behaved.”

Gag him.��The sea salt in the air smells bitter. “It was a rare few of us who learnt manners, princeps.”

Everything about Caligula’s smile is oily, from the crooked dimples at the ends, to his immaculately symmetrical cupid’s bow, to the stark thinness of his lips, stretched over too-white teeth. “Oh, I’ve noticed. Tell me, pincerna”— Remarkably, Caligula doesn’t seem to apply any effort in making the name of Octavian’s new career sound like how one would describe scum on the side of the yacht— “They taught you to wield a pilum, did they not?”

“It would be terribly against tradition if they didn’t.” Octavian replies dutifully, doing his best to imply a sense of deep respect for Caligula’s Rome– the one that the god-king seems to feel Camp Jupiter fails to emulate.

“Pick mine up.”

some douxie angst after wizards, spoilers for those new to trollhunters.

Staring at the stone at the end of his staff, hiserdoux replayed his memories on loop. His eyes glanced from the bracelet of spells he'd previously relied on to the staff he had earned now tightly clutched in his hand.

It had been about a month now, since he watched his teacher, Merlin, along with Morgana and king Arthur finally walk into the light on the other side. A month since he'd lost the one man he looked up to for so long almost like a father figure he never had.

Merlin was gone, the mantle had past down to him with his new staff. Hiserdoux was now the master wizard...but it didn't feel right. It felt empty.

He never imagined finally receiving his staff this way, never thought Merlin would die when he finally succeeded him. He thought it would be one grand final test, inventing a new spell or something incredible to finally earn the staff he kept getting denied. 

But here he was now, hiding out in new York with a spirit of earth and his familiar, having had his staff for only a month and feeling doubts about having truly earned it.

Merlin...wasnt wrong, he finally was ready, he had improved so much since the start and was really a master of magic now, a true wizard, but it still didn't feel right to have his staff sometimes.

Merlin never should have had to die, to pass on the mantle to him, in order for him to get this. Not like this. 

But the past is the past...and he's been down that road of changing it before, he doesn't want to mess with time again.

"Douxie?" A voice snapped him out of his thoughts and he jumped a bit when he felt a paw on his leg. "Hiserdoux, are you alright?" Archie asked, settling down beside him on the apartment couch.

"Oh, yeah, yeah, I'm...fine" he sighed "no Archie I'm not. This doesn't feel right" he let go of the staff which disappeared in a light puff of blue smoke and leaned forward with his elbows on his knees.

"Well I don't exactly like being in this big city either...but I get the feeling you mean something else" Archie tilted his head as if to encourage douxie to speak more.

"It's Merlin's absence. I've waited hundreds of years to finally get my staff, now I have it, but the greatest wizard of all time is...gone...it doesn't feel real, arch." 

"It's only been a month, hiserdoux, it takes time for these things to set it..." Archie nuzzled his way into douxies lap and curled up with a soothing purr.

"Thanks, arch" he gave the cat-dragon a few scratches behind the ear and leaned back against the couch again.

Merlin was gone, he has a staff, he was the master wizard now. But what came next? What now?

Could you maybe do a fic about the arcane order, and the trollhunters and douxie with them going up to a lake in a state up north in like Michigan, or Colorado? And they just spend the day relaxing and exploring, taking hikes in the woods, doing activities, and just having fun?

Anon, it's taking all my strength not to set this in my beloved Joshua Tree / Mojave National Park bc I haven't been able to go camping since last year but!!!

Tangental Headcanon: I like to imagine Claire and her family mainly speak Spanish to each other. Nenrique and Jim are now largely proficient, and, while Toby isn't quite as skilled at picking up languages, he's got a basic handle on the language as well.
