my sister lets her toddler have about an hour of screen time a week. two feelings I have about this are

1) there sure does seem to be something going on with kids and screens (although my bet is that TV is fine and games are mostly fine and social media is bad), so her approach seems possibly optimal

2) the long screaming rages my niece goes into when the mickey mouse video is taken away (which my sister takes as evidence of the frightening addictiveness of screens) during a boring meal with adults and no toys looks pretty much like how I'd feel if someone took my book away during a boring meal with adults

idk it sounds reasonable to me for a teenager to run away bc they didn't want to eat their veggies!

one hopes that by the later stages of childhood a parent will have figured out which veggies and preparation styles work for the kid, and the kid will have resigned themself to what they do and don't have to eat according to their parents, and it's all settled into an equilibrium instead of a daily fight. and hopefully as a teen your palette is expanding and you're even willing to eat more veggies then you did as a child.

however, if the kid is extra picky and stubborn, and the parent is extra determined to make sure they eat a good variety (or just eat whatever the parent prepared no matter what it is), it could absolutely continue to be a regularly-repeated fight. and if something is a continued point of contention throughout childhood then it absolutely makes sense for a teen to go FUCK this, i am nearly an ADULT i am done being told to eat my veggies i am gonna prove my independence and make them realize i don't have to just sit there and let them boss me around!!

like, the childishness of the fight is exactly why a teen would run away about it.

I don't think that it's a meal he'd have eaten often, nor would he openly joke about it, but I think that somewhere like the Temple where he was raised, or on the streets after he left Chara (the Black Market wasn't picky-) would be where it happened.

-> Nim. Oh. Yeah. She would've, I'm sure. (Also tbf I have no idea if I said that or not, my memory is SO bad, I'd probably have to check w/ Ancha lol- but for this let's imagine she's not.) One of the other kingdoms (which I'm establishing is basically full of shape-shifters which eat human flesh) was a prime source of income for Dust because they had a LOT of animal meat they weren't harvesting. In meetings, well, sometimes the meal involved the dishes of that kingdom, so human flesh! (He will NOT admit it didn't taste bad.)

-> Fresh. And no, not for the reason he'd normally know lmao. I think that Fresh's connection with the beasts (which I now realize are kinda stand-ins for his furby collection-) leads some of then to bring him gifts! And he lives usually out in the wilderness so a hunt is a hunt, y'know? Monsters are off-limits but like. If the beast brings him *just* the meat? He takes his chances abd hopes it's not People. (Some of it is, and he knows it, he could definitely identify it if given to him 🙏)

-> Reaper. He's not proud of it anymore, but back in the day when he was the general? Bringer of Death? Yeah, he ate a guy once. Used it as a fear tactic against their enemies, which in his defense DID work. But he wouldn't do it again. He would recognize the taste tho!

okay i work at a preschool and we’ve been dealing with figuring out separation (helping the littles say goodbye to their loved ones at the beginning of the day at drop off) and i have SO many thoughts about how baby sarah would’ve handled preschool for the first time

we know sarah is definitely a NUMBER ONE daddys girl, so i imagine goin g to preschool for the first time and realizing shes not spending her day with either daddy or uncle tommy like always would be a BIG stressor for her. i dont think shed cry or have any big tantrums necessarily, but she’d definitely be clinging to joel as he approaches the preschool dropoff point and letting out these precious lil whines whenever he tries to put her down. joel, of course, is tortured by this and is obviously super conflicted in terms of wanting to encourage sarah versus pushing her a little too far. the preschool teacher would notice them struggling and probably have to spend a little extra time/attention with sarah and joel, getting sarah comfortable and excited about the day (“your daddy tells me you like to sing, sarah. you do? yeah? did you know we do singing class, after snack? yeah! its so fun! what songs do you like to sing?”), and would probably let joel stay an extra few minutes just sitting and holding sarah at the drop off point, watching the rest of the kiddos and their families say goodbye so that sarah can get an idea of how it all works. once a majority of the kids start playing and getting into the toys and stuff, sarah is definitely interested��she’s practically standing up in joel’s lap trying to lean over and see what the rest of her peers are playing with. at one point a couple little girls find a bouncy ball and start kicking/hitting/throwing it around, and sarah is immediately turning to joel like “im weady now daddy can i have kisses” and hes like OF COURSE BABYGIRL IM SO PROUD OF U MWAH MWAH MWAH HAVE FUN. after through kisses and hugs, she shoots out of his lap and towards the kiddos playing soccer without so much as a wave. he gets up and goes towards the car, proud but sad that his little girl is growing up, and waves goodbye to the teacher. right before he gets past the drop off point, he hears sarah shrieking “WAIT DADDY WAIT WAIT DADDY ONE MORE HUG. ONE MORE HUG” and he turns immediately to see her running as fast as hes ever seen her back to him. he picks her up and spins her round like a princess, gives her kisses until shes giggling and pushing his face away with her precious little hands. he puts her down and watches her run back to the girls he hopes will be her friends with an excited cry of “bye daddy have a good day!!!!!”

honestly I’m fucking tired of calling my reps and begging them to care

I’ve been calling them over and over and over for the past four months begging and pleading them to speak out about what is obviously genocide

I don’t think they listen, most likely their underpaid interns got instructed to throw notes or voicemails out, but even if they do they don’t fucking care. It’s exhausting.

The White House comment line is only open for 4 hours 4 days of the week during hours most people work. If you’re able to call and wait for 20 minutes to finally speak to an intern they take a brief note and you can only hope they don’t immediately throw it out.

I’ve been doing this since I was a child. begging my reps to care about children being shot in school. begging them to care about my own schools getting bomb and gun threats every year. begging them to care about the fact that people don’t feel safe around cops. begging them to care about the growing number of people in my city becoming jobless and homeless and dying of covid. begging them like a dog to care at all about people’s lives and happiness.

I don’t know. I’m just fuckin’ tired

I won’t give up though. It’s not the only form of activism I do or the main one I give my energy to. I hope the same thing for anyone reading this. You shouldn’t just be boycotting and calling your reps, you should be attending vigils and protests and speaking about the issue of genocide to your friends and family
