Kindred on Hulu
I’m watching the new television adaption of Kindred on Hulu and…I don’t hate but I don’t love it. Kindred is one of my all time favorite books and seeing certain scenes being adapted to TV is great, but most of the changes they made seem so unnecessary. Spoilers if you haven’t seen the show or read the book.
Kevin is now a Tinder date she barely knows instead of her husband. In an interview, the show’s creator said he wanted to adapt to “evolution of gender roles or gendered behaviors, expectations around courtship” since in the book Dana’s present is the 1970s while in the TV show it’s the mid 2010s.
And I can understand that to an extent, but it feels like they’ve just removed a layer of protection from Dana when she jumps back to the past. Because in the books there’s a certainty that Kevin will do whatever he can to protect Dana. They’re a team, and while Kevin doesn’t fully grasp the horror of how jumping back to slavery era is affecting Dana, he is effective as her main form of support. In the show, because they are not married and don’t have that established bond, it makes me wonder if he’ll go to the same lengths to protect her or if their barely-a-relationship can survive all the strain time travel will put on it.
SPOILER FOR THE BOOKS: Dana leaves Kevin in the past, for quite a few years (for him, not her) if I’m remembering correctly. Would their relationship survive that in the tv show like it did in the books? Could this version of Kevin, that can’t seem to function in the past without Dana survive the way Kevin did for years? I don’t think I’d buy it.
The Kevin in the show just seems kinda dumb to me. He can’t tell a convincing lie to save his life. He’s constantly bumbling and stumbling over his words. And he wasn’t as concerned about Dana being on a plantation during slavery as I thought he should be. And part of that can be attributed to the fact that he barely knows her but still. I just don’t like him as much here.
They also added Dana’s mother as a character, as well as other members of her family. The creator said that was to “give her familial relationships that are complicated and that might also get us closer to an answer about why this is happening to her and more fully complete this metaphor I think Octavia was working toward”
That’s a horrible reason to make such a huge change to the source material. Dana was a fleshed out character without those immediate familial relationships. And Dana starts putting the pieces together about her time traveling fairly quickly in the book. We don’t need another character to spoon feed information to us.
It just feels like the creator and the writers are cluttering up the book with unnecessary characters and changes to make the book more interesting to a modern audience and it’s making the show worse.
On top of that, the acting feels weak.
For example: there’s this scene in the books where Dana is reading to Rufus and his mother, Margaret, comes in and starts interrupting them. She’s hostile towards Dana and doting to the point of smothering towards her son. Rufus snaps at her and Dana notes that his expression, voice, mannerism, etc. reminds her of Tom, Rufus’ violent, abusive father. I remember it being the first inkling I got while reading that Rufus wasn’t going to stay the little boy who treated his slaves kindly and familiarly. I remember thinking ‘oh Rufus is going to grow up to be more like his father, oh no.’
I was excited to see that scene played out in the show but the acting was so lackluster it barely made an impact on me.
I have other problems with the show but those are my main ones. I’m gonna keep watching, and I do think it’s enjoyable, but it does not do Olivia’s book the justice it deserves. I’m disappointed but I also didn’t have my hopes up.

Pairing: Biker!Dean x Preacher!Daughter
Characters: John Winchester, Rufus Turner, Ellen Harvelle, Pastor Jim, Bobby Singer, Sam Winchester, Carson Brady, Ofc's

A/N: Part 3/3
Words: 3,8+ k
A/N2: Lyrics by Dusty Springfield ‘Son of a preacher man’ (did i just get an inspiration for another story?)
Watching your father and Brady’s rush toward their car Jim calls his friend. He cannot let anyone destroy your and Dean’s happiness.
“John, we’ve got a problem. Y/F/N is out for blood and I am afraid it is your son’s. I will meet up with you at our usual spot. Maybe that stubborn man will follow me and leave the couple alone long enough…”
“Let me just,” Dean smirks when he picks you up in bridal style to carry you over the threshold, “bring my beautiful bride inside before I hide the car deeper down the path.”
“That’s a beautiful cabin Dean,” looking around the large but well-hidden cabin you smile. “I always imagined spending my vacations at a place like this.”
“Bobby and Rufus both built the hut,” explaining his father’s friends built the hut for their ‘wifeless’ weekends Dean carries you over the threshold. He's smiling wildly when he places you carefully on the couch.
“Stay here, I’ll get the bags. Ellen and the girls prepared the hut. We got food, and everything we will need until Jim got the license.”
Pecking your lips Dean smirks when you wrap your arms around his neck to deepen the kiss. “Just a minute, sweetheart. I swear I’ll kiss you all over.”
“I see you around Mr. Winchester,” smirking you tug at Dean’s tie. “Did I tell you that you look good in a suit.”
“Well, Mrs. Winchester, if you want me to,” he kisses you again, soft, slow, “I’ll wear a suit for you more often.”
Dean came back with the bags minutes later, exclaiming he will fly with you to France for honeymoon.
While you got comfortable on your husband’s demand Dean lit candles, opened the bottle of champagne John gave him, and played smooth music.
“Shit, you are so beautiful, Y/N,” Dean holds out his hand, a soft smile on his lips, “May I ask for this dance?” giggling you take his offered hand.
Slowly swaying you to the music Dean smiles when you lean your head against his shoulder. He hums the songs for you, holding you in his arms. “I have to admit, I am an awful dancer.”
“You are a great dancer, Dean,” you hide he stepped onto your foot more than once within the last minutes. “I could dance with you for the whole night.”
“Your toes will be black and blue if we do so,” laughing Dean twirls you around, grinning as you squeal when he grabs your waist to pick you up, holding you above his head. “That’s the Swayze, sweetheart…”
“Jim calm down and tell me what happened,” alerted John, Bobby and Ellen look at Pastor Jim, waiting for more information than his cryptic call. “Jim?”
“He was there, Y/F/N, threatened to find Y/N and force an annulment if he must. I think this is not about Y/N and Dean, it’s about Mary,” Jim huffs, falling onto a chair. I think he never got over her rejection.”
“Jesus, Jim,” John furrows his brows before his hands ball into fists. “That was a lifetime ago. Mary and I met, we fell in love and married. She never saw more in Y/F/N than a friend. When he admitted his feelings, Mary tried to be as nice as possible. We were already engaged, Dean on his way and all,” Ellen sighs deeply, shaking her head at your father’s behavior.
“I remember that time well, John. Y/F/N never looked twice at Mary. I know they were friends but things changed and then, one day, out of the blue he admitted his love,” Bobby runs one hand down his face, nodding at Rufus who enters the clubhouse, a frown on his face.
“Someone slit my tires, just like yours, Bobby,” Rufus grumbles. “John, yours are damaged too.”
“That idjit!” Bobby curses. “I bet he came here, not finding his daughter and let out his anger on our bikes. Son of a bitch!” Rage taking over Bobby gets up to take a swig from his beer. “What now?”
“I told him Dean and Y/N are on their way to France, not a complete lie as Dean plans to spare money to have a honeymoon and all,” Jim sighs. “This is a messed-up situation. I do not know how to make Y/F/N see Dean is not you and that Mary, never belonged with him.”
“Let’s find that idjit, John. We will try to talk some sense into that man,” Bobby looks around the clubhouse, grinning as everyone nods in agreement. “We should keep the youngster out of this as no one else knows about Mary and Y/F/N.”
“I’ll come too, John. Mary talked to me after Y/F/N admitted his love,” Ellen claps her hands, looking at her partner. “Come on Bobby don’t make a face. We are talking about a preacher; he will not shoot me.”
“I called the Sheriff on my way, she said Y/F/N has no right to force Y/N to annul her marriage with Dean. She willingly married your son, we all are witnesses, even Y/N’s mother was there. We will try to talk to Y/F/N. He has must give in,” Jim gets up, smirking at John. “I always wondered if I still can ride a bike. I’ll borrow one.”
“Let’s ride then,” John smirks, looking at his ‘old gang’. “Just the oldies this time, awesome…”
“Dean, I am a bit nervous,” you whisper, swallowing thickly while Dean hums, lost in the music and the feeling of your body against his.
“Why? Because of your daddy?” Looking at you in his arms Dean watches you lift your head to meet his gaze. You bite your lip, shaking your head.
“Sweetheart, we don’t have to do anything tonight,” Dean whispers sensing you are nervous about your first time he softly kisses your hair. “We rushed everything else. How about we take our time?”
“No,” pouting you fist his jacket. “I am nervous, but I want to have sex with you,” Dean holds back a chuckle at your serious expression.
“Baby girl, we can do it any other time,” murmuring the words he peppers soft kisses to your nose, forehead until his lips claim yours. “I’ll wait for you, Y/N.”
“I want you, Dean! You are my husband, fulfill your duty,” giggling you press your lips to Dean’s eagerly slipping your tongue into his mouth. “I don’t want to disappoint you, is all.”
“Y/N,” murmuring your name Dean presses his forehead to yours, just holding you for a moment, “you could never disappoint me, sweetheart. If someone loses his cool tonight it is me. I mean, you never had sex before and I don’t want to mess up and ruin your first time.”
“It’s with you, Dean. Nothing can go wrong,” you smile when Dean’s hands slide to your back to slowly unzip your dress. “Just don’t ruin my dress and we are good.”
“Y/F/N, listen,” Brady’s father sighs, “I know we agreed our children marry one day, but it seems your daughter is in love with that Winchester boy. Let’s call everything off,” while Carson nods, silently agreeing to his father’s words your father hits the breaks with full force.
“We will not give up now, Brady. Your son will marry my Y/N, period,” he grunts. “I will not allow a Winchester to steal another of my girls.”
“Is this about Mary, Y/F/N?” shaking his head your father glares at Carson who tried to talk to his father. “We all know she met John Winchester and fell in love before you ever said a word about your feelings. She could not know, just like John. It’s called love, Y/F/N, we preach love every Sunday at our churches.”
“Dad is right, Mr. Y/L/N,” Carson finally finds his voice. “I was a bit forward last summer and tried to kiss, Y/N. Honestly, I struggled with alcohol and did stupid things but I will not force your daughter into marriage making us both unhappy,” glaring at your father Carson clears his throat.
“You made us believe Dean forced Y/N into marriage or worse, but she willingly married him, and I am out. You can do whatever you want, I can’t stop you, but I’ll get out of the car and drive home.”
“Right, Carson,” while the Brady’s leave your father’s car, hoping he will stop hunting you and your husband your father drives off, clenching his jaw.
“I hope he does not do anything stupid dad,” Carson sighs. “I mean, he lied to us, pretending Y/N is in danger.”
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes, he was, he was, ooh, Lord knows, he was (yes, he was)
Dean sings along the song, while you giggle the whole time. He did not want to ‘go straight for the goal’, instead, Dean started with taking his jacket off, followed by his tie. Now he is busy to slowly open his button-up to distract you from your nervous state.
“I am a daughter, Dean, not a guy,” you giggle again when he drops the button-up, along with his undershirt. Your eyes roam his body, admiring the tattoo at his chest, loving it’s an orchid. “Dean?”
“An orchid for my orchid,” whispering the words Dean watches you stroke the tattoo. Your name written right next to the flower makes you sniffle. “Got it when I had to left town, Y/N.”
His lips claim yours and you lose all fear or worry when you feel his hands gently stroke your back. “Couldn’t forget about you, needed something to remind me of my girl. I remembered the orchids in your window.” You feel his lips travel along your neck, leaving little kisses all over your skin.
“Dean, I dreamed of you when you were away,” with trembling hands you touch his skin, let them travel over his back. “Love you.”
“I love you too, Y/N,” mumbling the words Dean presses a soft kiss to your shoulder before he looks down at your chest, wiggling his eyebrows. “I got to get rid of that bra, sweetheart,” he playfully threatens, and you squeal when he deftly unclasps the strapless bra, a big grin on his lips.
Left in your panties, stockings, and a blue garter you feel exposed at first, but the way Dean looks at you makes your heart jump in your chest. He’s carefully touching your left breast, squeezing it slightly and you gasp when his thumb brushes over your nipple.
“You’re so responsive,” you swear Dean’s eyes are three shades darker now, or it’s just your imagination but you can’t think about it for much longer as he dips his head to press a searing kiss to your lips while his other hand gropes your breast a bit rougher now.
“Going to make you feel so good, sweetheart. What do you want me to do? Touch you with my lips or fingers?” Confused you look down your body before you take Dean’s hand to press it to your mound. “Naughty girl goes for the hand right away.”
“I mean, don’t you want to,” his lips silence your worries, kiss all the tension away while his hand slips into your panties to toy with your clit. “Feels so good, Dean.”
He’s running his fingers down your clit, rounding the little nub with his fingertips before he brushes over your opening. “Let’s get more comfortable. We will not do it while standing here,” Dean moves you toward the bed, kissing you the whole time.
You drop to the bed with a giggle and a grunt from Dean. He landed on top of you, kissing his way down your body.
“Going to kiss you all over,” he threatens playfully. “Maybe even your sweet pussy,” you look flustered at Dean who grins like the devil again. “I was not joking, sweetheart.”
A peck to your lips later Dean works his way down your body. His lips start at your neck, sucking and nipping demandingly to leave a mark.
“Perfect,” his voice rougher now Dean presses a soft kiss to your shoulder before licking along your skin, down to your collarbone. The whole time his hands mirror his lips, touch the skin his lips and tongue can’t reach.
You close your eyes, gasping whilst his lips wrap around one nipple to suckle harshly at the pebbled nub. Your hands fly to his head, fisting his hair at the same time that Dean turns his attention toward your other nipple. He smirks at your reaction, rutting his erection against your core to make you cry out at his hardness.
“Dean, is it normal that you are that hard?” Innocently looking up at you, hiding he is rock-hard since he saw you in your wedding dress Dean nods, licking along your nipple. “Only for you, Y/N, now…”
Soft kisses get pressed down your tummy and you open your eyes again to watch Dean gathered the fabric of your panties with his teeth, giving you a wink.
“Dean? How?”
His hands move under your ass, encourage you to lift your body to help him get rid of the piece of clothing covering your most private part from Dean’s prying eyes.
“There we go,” panties tossed over his shoulder Dean stares at your exposed sex, grinning again. “First the garter, sweetheart, and then I’ll eat this sweet pussy.”
You watch him grab the garter, looking at you before he turns his attention toward your body, nibbling at your thigh. He slides the garter down your leg, holding it up like bait before he stuffs it into his pants.
“Mine to keep,” humming to himself Dean settles between your legs, spreading you on his way. “Now, let me taste your sweetness.”
Not knowing how to react or if you should do anything you watch Dean dive in to slide his tongue through your folds. He’s humming now and then, stroking your thighs with his thumbs while he lazily licks up and down your sex, never breaking eye-contact.
“Dean, it feels, oh-this is,” fisting the sheets you start grinding against his face.
Your body seems to know what to do so you shut your brain off and let your body talk to Dean. “More…”
“You’ll get more, sweetheart but for now let me just,” a finger joins his tongue, circles your entrance carefully, “open you up, Y/N.”
His finger slips inside, and you wiggle slightly, not used to feeling anything bigger than a tampon inside your body. “If you want me to stop, tell me so, Y/N. I need to know if you feel uncomfortable.”
Dean’s concern makes you smile. “It feels odd, but you do not hurt me, Dean. I want more,” licking your lips you look at his hand. “Two?”
“My baby gets two fingers,” adding another finger Dean starts curling his digits, pressing a whimper out of you just when he brushes over the spot making you squirm. “Going to scissor my fingers to open you up a little.”
Dean almost purrs against your flesh when he dives back in. Two fingers knuckle deep, curling he wraps his lips around your sensitive nub, and you feel something happening in your belly.
There is a knot forming and you do not know if you like it or not, but you arch off the bed feeling the knot tighten. “Dean I…uh-baby, fuck,” you cry out, hit by an unexpected orgasm.
“There is my girl,” Dean grins up at you, still curling his fingers. “Knew you can make it, baby girl. How do you feel?”
“Good, so good, Dean. I want more,” whining you watch Dean slips his fingers out of your slit. “Can I have more?”
“Sweetheart, I’ll give you more in a minute, just let me get rid of my pants,” Dean smirks, hastily leaving the bed to get rid of his clothing. Pants end up on the couch, his socks hang from the lamp and we do not talk about his boxers on the table.
“Dean, you look, damn,” biting your index finger you glance at Dean’s penis, admiring the way it bobs when he walks toward you.
“Let me fetch a condom and we can start making you my dirty girl,” giggling again you nod eagerly, watching Dean dip one knee into the mattress. “Just tell me if you need me to stop.”
You hold out your arms, shaking your head when Dean still hesitates. “I want you to…you know, make love to me,” you whisper watching Dean roll the condom over his length.
Watching you spread your legs wider Dean kneels between your thighs. He admires your body, for a moment before his eyes meet yours and his heart flutters. “Love you, sweetheart.”
He’s covering your body, moves one hand behind the back of your head to bring you closer to his lips. “Just let me,” you can feel him run the tip up and down your sex, coating his length with your slick, “love you.”
For a moment you feel pressure when he slowly presses into you. His right-hand grips your thigh, holding it in a tight grip while he sinks further into you. Dean moans when you grip his biceps, digging your blunt nails into his flesh when he finally bottoms out.
You blink a few times, ludicrous as Dean’s body is flush against yours. “That’s odd,” you chuckle looking down your body. “Dad wasn’t right. I mean, there is no pain or hellfire. I feel stuffed and I can feel you twitch.”
“How do you feel?” Dean whispers into your ear, moving his right hand to the small of your back to press your body to his warm chest. “Does anything hurt?”
“I want to feel you move, Dean. I want to know how it feels when you,” biting your lip you look up at Dean. “Fuck me.”
“Bad girl, naughty even,” his lips hungrily meet yours, not that innocently anymore. “We will fuck later, tonight we will make love, Y/N.”
Disappointed you feel Dean slide back out, feeling empty you pout. Dean stills, just holding the tip inside, a grin on his lips. Before you can protest he slides back in, making you gasp at the force.
Your hands move over his back, caressing the skin as he slowly moves inside of you. There is a pressure building up, more intense than before and you want nothing more than to experience another high.
While Dean holds you against his body, giving you harder thrusts you can’t stop the moans leaving your lips. It’s like Dean broke all seals and now you are lost in the pleasure he gives you, not caring about rules or being ‘a good girl’ any longer.
Your legs wrap around his waist, your hand's paw at his back, and to Dean’s surprise, you raise your head to look him straight in the eyes. “Fuck me, Dean. Make me your dirty girl.”
“Jesus, Y/N,” cursing Dean speeds up, too close to his release he fights against his body, imagining anything but you calling his name, writhing on his dick while you beg him to take you like his dirty girl. “I am going to, fuck me, please. Oh-shit, baby please cum for me.”
Eagerly rolling your hips to meet Dean’s thrusts you throw your head back, crying out Dean’s name before pleasure takes over and you fall back onto the pillow a smirk on your lips. “Damn, Dean.”
“Y/N,” collapsing on top of you Dean buries his face into your neck, moaning your name. “I never came harder, baby girl.”
“Can’t say the same,” giggling you ruffle Dean’s hair, making him laugh against your skin. “I bet no man could make me cum harder.”
“I am your husband, no one but me makes you cum,” humming you close your eyes, enjoying the afterglow. “I love you, baby girl.”
“Love you too, my big bad biker boy…”
“End of line Y/F/N. Cut the crap and let's talk like men,” John sighs, not letting your father pass. “Mary and me, we did not know anything about your feelings. Back then we were in love, I proposed and we married.”
“I loved her, and you stole her, Winchester,” your father spats, pointing toward John’s bike. “You are the devil and seduced her with your cigarettes, the leather jacket, and bike. She should’ve been my wife, not yours.”
“Enough!” Ellen steps toward your father, clenching her fists. “You will not destroy Y/N’s luck out of jealousy. Mary, she was a good woman, loved her children and John. I was the one she turned to after you told her about your feelings. Mary was torn between clarifying that she only loves John and that she’s expecting his child and not wanting to hurt you, her friend.”
“She was pregnant back then,” your father gasps, stepping backward, placing one hand onto his heart. “I did not know. I thought I got a chance.”
“Y/F/N, she loved you like a friend or brother. Mary’s heart only belonged to John, till the end. I am sorry, but that’s the truth,” Ellen’s voice is softer now, full of compassion. “I know it’s hard to lose someone you love, I lost my Billy,” she sniffles now, giving your father a cracked smile.
“But the old geezer over there,” she points toward Bobby, giving him a soft smile, “is my second love and I do not love him less, just differently. You have got a wonderful wife, a beautiful daughter and soon you will have grandchildren. Do not mess things up, even more, you already missed her wedding. Give her love a chance and we can, if they agree, have a second wedding at your church.”
“Grandchildren, oh, Lord,” falling to his knees, folding his hands your father cries silently, “what have I done.”
“Nothing you can’t fix, Y/F/N. Stop the hatred and let your daughter have her life. We can arrange a second wedding with you leading her down the aisle and marrying her to my son,” John holds out his hand, gripping your father’s hand tightly when he takes it. “I am sorry you loved Mary and lost her, but I lost her too.”
“I do,” smiling wildly you watch Dean put the ring on your finger for a second time. As promised everyone helped to arrange a second wedding, at your father’s church, with your father marrying you to Dean.
“My last words to the newlyweds are private. I must apologize for my stubbornness, for the bad words, and judging this fine young man. I will try to be a better man, husband, father, and man of this church to fulfill the promise I made to my wife and Mary Winchester’s grave. I promise to be the father Y/N deserves, the husband my beloved wife deserves, and the man offering his blessings to the men and women of the MC Purgatory…”
Walking out of the church, holding Dean’s hand you remember the first time you met Dean all those years ago. His green eyes shone, and you knew, you will marry him one day, and you did…

foundations
takes place between the wyvern moon and the ethereal moon
Judith warned him all those moons ago. “Your grandfather still thinks that you’re liable to get yourself killed at the Officers Academy. Don’t try proving him right, otherwise I’ll have to come down and set you straight myself.”
It had been the night before the Knights of Seiros were due to arrive, to escort the heir of the Leicester Alliance to the Officers Academy alongside the prince and princess. Dimitri and Edelgard. Claude only knows their names, but already he thinks of them as friends. The old man hemmed and hawed for a year over if Claude would see this "Officers Academy" for himself, but the announcement of their attendance forced his hand. He didn't look happy. My joy is his pain, Claude had thought bitterly.
His own announcement had been quiet and subdued, per Oswald's insistence. Claude wanted celebrations. A feast, a party, a smile on his grandfather's face, not the mournful look of a man about to send his son to his death. And especially not some old woman breathing down his neck. "Uh-huh. And how would you find out?"
“Oh I’ll find out. I have eyes everywhere, boy. Don’t forget that.” Judith's words went in one ear and out the other, and Claude forgot them as soon as he waved her off. And so the conversation ended.
For all of Oswald's fretting, hardly anything terrible happened this year. Well, sure, there was the incident in the Sealed Forest, an incident that Claude had been very careful to avoid referencing in his letters back. Oswald write fairly frequently–once a moon, 'are you eating well, sleeping well, are you making friends?'. Judith writes, but less frequently. Only to chew him out for slacking in class, and those letters were always too timely.
Claude had a hunch. He always did–his upbringing fostered a habit of observing others and collecting hunches. The question was never if there were Daphnel spies watching his movements, but where they were. How far does this go? Who is spying for Judith von Daphnel, and how far does her reach go?
Then he gets punched in the face. And as it turns out, that reach is pretty damn far.
—————
"Stop your gawking, boy. It's unbecoming of Oswald's heir."
Claude forces his eyes away from Judith's face, but that only adds to the pot of roiling emotions inside of him. Confusion at seeing Judith so far from Daphnel territory. Embarrassment at being caught in a moment of weakness. Shock that she had come because she already knew what had happened to him, and the anger that ensued that yes, all this time, there had been eyes on him, watching. The privacy he thought he had, being away from Derdriu, had been a mirage all this time.
Upset isn't the word he's looking for to describe how he's feeling, but it's getting there.
He hasn't said a word to her since they were seated in the common room. That's not like Claude, but in privacy, with just him and his aunt, all of his carefully built rules and strategies fly out the window. Judith von Daphnel may not know all his tricks, but she knows them well enough to trap him if she feels the need to.
So when Claude finally speaks, it's honest, and carefully neutral. "What are you doing here?"
"Confirming a rumor," Judith answers simply, punctuated with a sip of her whiskey. "We got word back in Derdriu that you were coming back with a terrible injury on your face. And I'm sure you can imagine how Oswald reacted to that. But enough of that for now. First, let me get a closer look." Leaning over the table, Judith takes Claude's chin in her hand. Her touch is gentle but firm, as she carefully turns his head. A sympathetic tut. "Hmm. Not as bad as the report made it out to be. But it's hardly pretty. What did the healer say?"
"...That it'll heal." When Judith releases him, Claude resists the urge to rub over where her hand was. "Told me to avoid getting punched and visit the infirmary twice a week for checkups. In two moons' time, I'll only have a scar to remember it by."
"A scar?" Judith's raises her eyebrows, but only for a moment before she nods to herself. "Right, right, the gauntlet." Claude's eye twitches, but he lets her continue, "Well, the bright side is the report exaggerated things a bit. This is about what I expected for what happened. But seeing this for myself... well, I'm just glad you're holding up."
Holding up? That's a new one. "Why wouldn't I?"
"Delicate area and all. A black eye is one thing–we've all gotten one some way or another. Being the troublemaker you are, I'm sure you're familiar with those. Am I right?" Claude can't help but huff in laughter, and Judith smiles in return, "There you go, loosen up a bit. Broken bones near your eye, from that prince who can't get his Crest under control, it's a serious matter. When we heard... well, words can't explain it. The old man was beside himself. Ready to write a letter to Rufus about the incident. I was barely able to convince him otherwise."
"It wasn't that bad," Claude tries.
"I said it wasn't as bad as I thought, but you can hardly wave it away and call it nothing." More whiskey pours into her cup, and more water in his. "In any case, Oswald is right to have his concerns about his grandson. The most you can do right now is put up with it."
Claude frowns, though it pulls at his bruise. Of course. His dreams of leading Leicester and implementing his goals as its sovereign duke have keeps his mind focused on what matters. But even they can't erase what feels like ever-increasing restrictions on what he can or cannot do. The last thing Claude needs is more hurdles in a country that prides itself on erecting them.
Judith breaks the silence between them with a sharp thump, her glass hitting the wooden endtable. "Right! To business, then. Oswald sent with me clerics that will help with the healing process. Some of his own personal healers, so they're familiar with you as you should be of them. I'm certain the nurses here at the Officers Academy are quite skilled at what they do, but you know how he is.
"Yeah." Claude takes a sip of water to hide his sudden grimace. That's going to be conspicuous.
"The Ethereal Ball is in two moons," Judith adds. "It'll be tight, but I'm certain it will heal in time. Oswald also wrote letters for all your professors to excuse you from your exercise drills while you recover. I'll give them to you before I leave, so make sure you get it to them before classes resume."
"Mmm." More meddling. More silence.
"Did it hurt?"
Claude looks up at Judith, to the concerned look in her eyes. He ought to have an answer–he does, doesn't he?–but nothing comes out.
"I know you like to forge on ahead on your own," she continues carefully, "and that you have the confidence to believe in yourself even when we push against you. But you know that you're not alone in this, right?"
"...I know that."
"You have family to rely on when things go wrong. ...You also have people that are relying on you. People to consider, and who shouldn't be left behind or ignored." There it is, the way Judith's voice hardens when she's trying to make a point. "Independence is an admirable trait to have, but there are times when you take it too far."
"...It's only that–I know my limits, and that I haven't hit them yet. Oswald, grandfather... he's so overbearing. And I know, I know, Godfrey!" Claude snaps when Judith opens her mouth. Of course, he regrets it soon after when her face falls, and her expression hardens as her voice had. But still he goes on, "I'm not him. Things won't end like it did with him. I don't need protection."
A pregnant pause. Judith making him wait, no doubt, and Claude steadily returns her gaze. He misstepped earlier, and no doubt he's paying for it now. It's fair of her, more than fair. Claude should know better than to throw the name of her dead husband back at her like some kind of curse.
She lets out a deep sigh. A tired sigh. "Alright. You've made your point. But some food for thought..." Judith takes another sip of her whiskey, swirling it in its cup. "There's a lot riding on you. There was a lot riding on Godfrey, too, and he broke under the pressure of it all." Another pause. "In some ways you have less support than he did, but you still have support. The Alliance is a country where no man can be allowed to forge ahead on his own. He is one of a group that works together for the betterment of all. That's the ideal, anyways... The sooner you learn that, the easier your time here will be. Just give it some thought, will you?"
—————
Judith's parting gift included Oswald's letters, but also a small pot of a brown, perfumed substance. "It's makeup. Don't give me that face," she scolds him, scowling. "When I was a girl attending the Officers Academy, the marketplace rarely had anything that could cover my blemishes without making me look like I came back from the dead." Then the pot is forced into his hands. "It'll be useful for you, better than an eyepatch in any case. The men of Derdriu cover their blemishes with this too, if it makes you feel any better."
It didn't, really. Not at the time. But Judith's gift was intended to be a tool, and so Claude tried to think of it as such. At least the scent of rosewater was a familiar one. A comforting one. It reminded him of his mother, and of Aunt Judith as well.
—————
Two weeks before the ball, the Riegan clerics returned to Derdriu. And in the early morning before it, Claude inspects himself in the mirror.
The bruising is long gone. His fingers scrape at the last bit of rose-scented paste clinging to the pot to cover the dark scar on his cheek. The skin already healed there, the clerics had explained to him. There is no way to undo its work. When Claude dabs makeup over it, though, the scar all but disappears. He tilts his head, smiles at himself in the mirror. Perfect.
Claude had his misgiving about this at first. But to be able to conceal his bruising and live his life normally, just as himself... when he writes to Judith for another pot, he'll have to let her know how invaluable that was to him.
He leaves his room shortly after, brushing past the stacks of papers on his desk. Underneath half-written essays and class notes are a set of unopened letters from Duke Riegan himself from two moons ago, buried and forgotten. No one that knew Claude von Riegan would think he'd actually hand those into his professors, Judith least of all.
#unbeta'd. unproofread. unedited. organic doc-to-post with no organization in between#i wanted this wrapped up and done before the ball but Alas. BUT NOW i can ball without this on the back of my mind

Your Fault Chapter 18 Time and Again
AO3
The much anticipated wedding night scene is being filmed. It has been marked, rehearsed, re-marked, and rehearsed more. They want it right on the edge of proprietary. Like the viewers are in the room with them.
It isn’t the acting out the sex scenes that will be hard, no pun intended. It will be keeping their true feelings hidden, especially Caitriona. Jamie is already in love with Claire but Claire isn’t yet with Jamie. So Caitriona can’t show any of what she feels for Sam until the final act, and then it is still just a portion.
“You are Claire. You didn’t want this marriage. You don’t want this night. It is something you have to do.” She says over and over as her wedding gown is put back on.
“Having trouble getting into character?” the costume assistant asks her.
“No, just separating it.”
“Oh right. You and Sam are..”
“Lovers yes.” She goes back to her mantra as the last of the gown is put on.
The first part of filming is effortless. The lead up. The jokes about Bob Hope, the drinking, Angus and Rupert trying to catch a peek. Simple and fun. Then the set was closed.
Caitriona seats on the edge of the bed as Sam speaks of it getting late. Says the famous, “To bed or to sleep” line. It is his facial reactions to her ‘well’ answer, that causes trouble.
“Just not quite right.” Anne says. “His face must reflect lust and love, hope and fear.”
Sam can act with his face. He is wonderful at it. So, he is as frustrated by it as Anne is. Finally she pulls Caitriona aside.
“Next time instead of well say, come over here and let’s f*ck.”
Oh that will work! Caitriona thinks as they reset. When she does, the look on his face is perfect.
“skirts first,” she spins around and almost falls. They go again.
He frowns, focused as he opens them up, letting them fall, one by one. The shake in his hands as he goes to undo her laces isn’t faked. He is battling nerves and exhaustion by this point. But that is where Anne wants them, to make it real.
“Breast,” she reminds him where his hand is to be going.
“I got it. Don’t worry.” Oh he knows exactly where her breasts are. Exactly how they feel in his hands. Despite his best efforts, he feels himself harden under the tightly tied privacy pouch.
Lust, Claire is feeling lustful. So it is okay to let some of that bleed out when she says, “My turn”, and undoes his belt. He is lifting her up and she gets up on her tiptoes to meet him as they kiss for only the second time. The characters anyway. It is to be passionate and it is. The huskiness isn’t faked when she asks him where he learned to kiss like that. “I said I was a virgin, nae monk. If I need help, I will ask “ He turns her and lifts her shift. She turns quickly and pulls him down on top of her, guiding him home, or so it seems. Once again she finds him as hard as a rock.
“Cut! Great, hold positions guys.” Cameras have to be adjusted to capture her face.
“Sam?”
“I know. I can’t help it. Sorry.”
They do several takes of the first time. Again and again he runs himself over her. Christ! And next scene they will be naked, or near.
The afterglow scene is easy. A few takes to get all the angles they want and then the set is closed down farther. The monitors are covered.
To keep the rhythm going, they are filming all three intimate scenes in a row, doing pick-ups on the scenes with Jamie and the other men and Claire, Dougal, and Rufus later. So straight to the ‘I want to look at you’ scene.
He pulls his shirt off, well aware that his erection will be visible to all, even with the privacy pouch. Caitriona’s touch, as she walked around him, examining Jamie, doesn’t help. Her fingers run over his bum and he feels his eyes roll back in his head. He turns to look at her and their eyes lock. Crap! Anne motions for them to continue to roll. Alright they haven’t messed up. She comes around to the front and her eyes drop to his front before moving up. Her face is flushed.
“Fair is fair. I want to see you as well.” She backs up a bit and slowly unties her shift before shrugging out of it. The privacy patch is now the only thing she wears. Good God!
He growls out ‘mine’ in his line before taking her lips in a bruising kiss. He is to lift her into his arms and carry her to the bed and they film it that way but…
“We have a problem.” Anne tells them. “Shadows show his held in erection. It looks odd.”
“I will cover it. Have Jamie carry Claire body to body, Claire’s legs around his waist.” Caitriona suggests.
So they do. It works. He falls into the bed and enters her. A gasp from them both as he rocks against her. Once again hitting right where she needs him. Claire’s orgasm might not be faked.
Sam seems to know and strives to time it out. Her hand around his neck, digs deeper as both her and her character get close. A few more strokes. She calls out as Claire and himself.
“I am so sorry! Did I hurt you?”
“No!” she is flushed and her eyes dilated.
“Are you sure?” His anxious face searches hers.
“Very.”
Jamie’s face transforms as he gets it. “I dinna know women could. Does it happen every time?”
“Only if the man is a good lover.”
“I dinna want to hurt you. You are so small.”
“Cut! Let’s set up for the blow job.”
“You are a very good lover, you know.” She whispers to him.
“You did?” a nod. “I thought so.”
Claire kisses and bites down her husband’s body. Caitriona raising Sam’s skin as she heads down. It is scripted. They need the audience to know she is biting him but, Caitriona knows it is a turn on for him.
She isn’t surprised when she reaches his privacy pouch covered cock to find it straining against the fabric. With the cameras focused on capturing Jamie’s reaction, she decides to help. She licks across him.
What, in the name of God, is she doing! He is already so turned on it isn’t funny. To have her do that! Was she trying to kill him? His eyes roll back farther and he grabs the fur behind him, arching up.
She nibbles on his thigh after, close enough to smell his desire. Lord, she is dripping herself. The want for him is intense.
“I don’t care! It is for my modesty, ah?”
“Yes Sam but..”
“You know Caitriona and I are together. I have been nude on stage before. It won’t bother me but this does. It bloody hurts. I am taken it off for this scene.”
He isn’t asking. After a long day of running across the woman he loves, touching her, having her near nude around him, he can’t wear the privacy pouch anymore. It really hurts.
She nods consent and he turns and takes it off. His sigh of relief echoes around set. “Do as you can to keep his penis out of the shot.”
The last intimate scene. The pearls. He walks up to where she sits, staring off into space. Lighting, already low, is readjusted more to create shadows from his hips down.
He drops them over her neck, the lines are said, and she touches his face, before urging him to join her, to join with her. They come together and she feels him poke against the barely on, privacy patch. Her own arousal has loosened it. She is suddenly nervous. As much as she wants him, they aren’t shooting porn. She pulls the tartan, she, as Claire, had about her. She covers them both. Scripted and she is glad. The intimacy level, already at a very high level, is suddenly off the charts. He bends down to kiss her breast, not scripted. They are seconds away from making the scene real when Anne calls ‘cut.’ Thank God.

Destiel Chronicles
Vol. LXIX
It was a love story from the very beginning.
I Want You Back (Part II)
(11x16b/11x17)
Hello there! Finally finishing the second part of this meta.
It will focus on the parallel between the entity from the 'Safe House' episode and Amara it’s suggesting. Afterwards we will talk about one of the episodes that were discussed more controversially among us Destiel shippers, I'm talking about 'Red Meat', and I will show you step by step that it is, indeed, a very Destiel one.
Thanks to @destielle for beta-ing this one! She's amazing. Thank you girl! 😘💝
Soul Eater
Let's talk about that haunting parallel I just mentioned.
If you check episode 11x16, there is this entity from that house that ate souls.
RUFUS: A Soul Eater? What the hell is that?
BOBBY: Undead creature that feeds on souls. Hence the name. They exist in a place between our world and… another. Soul Eater moves into a house, and once it does, it makes what the lore refers to as a ‘nest’.
RUFUS: A place that exists outside of time and space.
//
SAM:The nest looks and feels like whatever house the Soul Eater is in.
The creature created a fake house, like a reflection in the mirror. It’s a fake home in which the entity shows people the souls of the ones they love in different and terrible situations (dead) to keep them under it's dominium. From the moment the seal was broken, the creature attacked again.
SAM: Apparently, the nest messes with their victim's head, shows them things they love, parts of their soul in distress, it keeps the victim's soul vulnerable.
So we have a broken seal, a powerful creature eating souls, a fake reality to keep them dominated, right?
And Bobby saying that he could feel the evil in that dimension…
I think we have the perfect description of Amara here, Dean and Sam broke the sigil, Cain's Mark, and she was released, she eats souls, just like the Soul Eater, creating a fake happiness/reality to dominate the victims/Dean.
Again the writers are showing us that Amara is evil, her dominance over Dean is established through fear.
I think it’s vital to mention that between all the books Rufus and Bobby were reading, there was one with the title "Fallen Angel", it make us recall Castiel and Lucifer with the particularity that they're sharing vessels at that moment. Two fallen angels: one fell due to love and the other due to hate.
Another interesting visual narrative that acted as a foreshadowing, was the soul eater placing a hand on Dean's chest in the same way Rowena will place her hand on him in the last episode of the season where he’ll become a soul bomb.
And now, pay close attention to the following scene, because it’s connected to the next episode (Red Meat).
RUFUS: What'd you see, Bobby?
BOBBY: My boys. Both of 'em. Both of 'em dead. And I saw… well I don't know what the hell I saw.
And…
SAM: Hey, you said the Soul Eater made you see things. Plural. So… what else did you see?
DEAN: I saw you. Dead on the floor.
This was a foreshadowing of Sam laying dead on the floor (well he won’t die, but almost) in the next episode. But it’s A BLATANT MIRROR. BOBBY SEEING HIS SONS DEAD ON THE FLOOR. AND IT’S REFLECTING PURELY FAMILIAL LOVE. A father and his two children who are brothers.
FAMILY LOVE, there's no hint of ROMANTIC LOVE in here, no Wincest! Bobby was actively chosen to pose as the mirror. The writers easily could have used a couple with the husband seeing his wife laying dead on the floor, right? But it was BOBBY who saw his boys on the floor, just like Dean saw his brother. It’s about Family!
Sorry I'm a little bossy here, but I need you to understand this point before jumping to the next one.
Using Logic
Let's analyze episode 11x17 with logical facts…
The mentioning of Castiel at the beginning of the episode is there to remind us that Dean is feeling miserable because they couldn't rescue him yet. And he is not sleeping because of that. Sam is trying to comfort him by saying that they’ll get him back.
The episode introduced Corbin and Michelle, a newly-wed couple very much in love.
Corbin would do anything to protect Michelle (Dean mirror) and he is the one becoming a monster (werewolf), so he’s acting as our Castiel's mirror here.
Sam gets shot, and he has a very bad wound. We have Corbin trying to kill him, because he would do anything to save Michelle, even if that implies making a bad decision.
Now, we have Dean thinking his brother is dead. But keep in mind that WHEN HE ENTERS THE ROOM SAM IS ALREADY DEAD (in Dean’s eyes at leat). So DEAN DIDN'T SEE HIS BROTHER DIE. HE FOUND HIM DEAD, LAYING ON THE FLOOR. (First fact).
Then this… he asks Michelle to assist him in his try to contact Death… but … he also says this ..
Dean: Okay. After I do this, go get the doc and tell her to, um... Tell her to bring me back, if she can. If not... no hard feelings, okay?
He is not suicidal here, THIS IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT TO EPISODE 13X05 WHEN HE WANTED TO DIE, NOT WANTING TO LIVE BECAUSE CAS WASN'T ANYMORE. Even knowing Sam was dead, Dean wanted to live. GIVING YOUR LIFE FOR YOUR BROTHER DOESN'T COUNT AS A SUICIDAL THOUGHT, BUT INSTEAD AS SOMETHING ANYONE WOULD DO FOR THEIR BROTHER, especially when that brother is your little brother you raised yourself like a father. (Second Fact).
Dean wants to be alive because he needs to rescue Cas.
Billie: That's what I thought. It's cute, though. You pretending you're trying to save Sam for the greater good, when we both know you're doing it for you. You can't lose him. But even if Sammy could win the title bout... the answer would still be “no.” The answer will always be “no.” Game's over, Dean. No more second chances. No more extra lives. Time to say bye-bye to Luigi, Mario.
This sums up perfectly how Dean feels about Sammy. He raised him, he always took care of him. He can't lose him because all his life revolved around Sam. This is not Wincest, this is solely FAMILY LOVE. Remember what we said about Bobby a little earlier, these were Bobby's feelings too.
I will put here an addition from Destielle, she talked about the well known toxic codependency, and i think is important too:
"Billie basically calls out the toxic codependency between Sam and Dean here. ‘You’re doing it for you’ she deadpans. It’s more about Dean fulfilling the task, or rather duty, John gave him so early on, that it’s part of Dean’s personality. An automatism. He doesn’t want Sam to live because it was Sam’s wish, but because Dean needs Sam to keep things the way they always have been as so not having to deal with himself."
Is interesting because John Winchester heritage to Dean was the GUILT and the FIRST BORN duty, so practically, he keeps reacting and acting like a soldier that needs to protect the little brother and the entire world, I talked so many times in My metas about this toxic heritage and about THE BIG PROTECTOR living inside Dean. Interesting comment my friend! Thank you!
Dean’s spirit [sadness and desperation in his eyes]: I'm asking you... I'm begging you, please. Bring him back. Bring him back and take me instead.
DEAN WINCHESTER WILL ALWAYS GIVE HIS LIFE IN EXCHANGE FOR THE ONES HE LOVES BECAUSE HE IS DEAN WINCHESTER. NOT JUST FOR SAM, BUT FOR THE WORLD, AND CAS.
Billie: I'm not here to bargain with you, kid. I'm here to reap you. And the kicker is... Sam's not dead. [Dean looks stunned] But you are. Or will be, soon enough.
Now… let's go with Michelle and Dean's conversation… the third fact:
Dean: Michelle, this is gonna be very hard. But you will be okay. And, eventually... eventually you'll get back to normal.
Dean is talking from experience. Drawn from every time he lost a friend, a family member (including Sam) which he always affronted in the same way, by hunting, drinking heavily and stuffing bacon in his face. It always was hard at first but got better with time until he got back to normal. He's talking with determination because he lost a lot of beloved people. But … he hasn’t lost the love of his life yet… Michelle did…
Gif set credit @thejabberwock 👇
Michelle [sighing]: No, I won't. They said I could leave... [she sighs] an hour ago. But... where am I even supposed to go? After everything we survived together... [turning back to Dean] I watched the man I love die. There's no normal after that.
This is a rich piece of text over there. First of all, she's convincing Dean she won't be back to normal. Ever. She's the one talking with authority now, because she's talking from her experience of losing the love of her life… 'where am I even supposed to go?' SHE'S LOST, Just as lost as Dean will be for the first 5 episodes from season 13. 'After everything we survived together…' these words are carving deep into Dean's heart, because the man he loves is in danger in the very moment, and I know he's recalling everything they survived together. 'I watched the man I love die, there's no normal after that', Dean's face is priceless here, full of fear, he doesn't want to go through the same Michelle has and had to. He doesn't want to watch Cas die. And I want you to remember the first fact I pointed out, MICHELLE IS SAYING SHE WATCHED CORBIN DIE, not that she found him dead. Okay? So we are not talking about a reference to the death of Sam here. Dean didn't watch him die, he found him dead. And secondly, Dean knows Sam is okay by now, so why would he display a face full of pain and fear? Who's the one in real danger now, possessed by Lucifer? CASTIEL. DEAN DOESN'T WANT TO SEE CASTIEL DIE. HENCE THE TERRIFIED EXPRESSION.
AND THAT'S WHY IN THE NEXT EPISODE HE WILL FIGHT AGAINST RATIO, AGAINST WHAT’S THE LOGICAL THING TO DO, JUST BECAUSE HE DOESN'T WANT TO SEE THE MAN HE LOVES DIE. Sorry for the yelling. But I needed to make things clear.
To Conclude:
The Soul Eater in episode 11x16 is a blatant mirror of Amara. Another way to show us her dominance over Dean is a forced and dark one.
Episode 11x17 must be analyzed with logic. The clues are in the details and related to the previous episode in which Bobby saw Sam and Dean dead. It was purely about FAMILIAL LOVE and it must not be mistaken for something else because that just would be a twisted interpretation.
Dean giving his life in exchange for the one of EVERYONE shouldn't be mistaken for suicidal tendencies, too.
The fact that he wanted to go on with his life EVEN THOUGH BEING CONVINCED SAM IS DEAD is an important difference to how Dean is behaving in 13x05.
We have the foreshadowing for Castiel's death and Mourning!Dean and a prelude to 11x18 where we’ll have a very desperate Dean trying to save his angel.
Hope you liked this one! See you in the next meta!

Drop the Evie essay you wrote
okay so first of all it wasn’t really an essay the way some of my ramblings are, more like just me writing down all of my thoughts in a vaguely coherent manner bc my brain was running too fast to really organize it
and second of all, just to be on the safe side, these are the potential trigger warnings that I would give for the essay — I don’t know if they all actually come up or not, but better safe than sorry, so proceed with caution!
Potential TWs: being outed, parental neglect, character death (canon), suicide attempts (semi-canon), eating disorders, lots of mental health issues, and lots of general trauma and feelings of never being good enough, and canon typical references to drinking/drugs/partying/etc
so just like a fun fact, Evie’s vitamin water of choice is zero sugar strawberry lemonade and yes i spent too long reading reviews on different flavours all because gossip girl did an entire product placement episode
anyways now onto real thoughts let’s go lesbians let’s go
so okay evie has a... very negative experience with Lily’s various boyfriends and husbands. When Evie was younger she was always hopeful that this time would be different, that they’d be a family, that her mom would actually stick around, and every single time she’s been let down and left heartbroken. When her mom starts dating Bart, Evie is very against it but she just can’t be bothered to even try to talk to Lily — Lily will date him, maybe get married, play house, abandon her children, then get divorced, and the cycle will repeat, and Lily will never give a shit about how her children feel about it. Bart is just the latest rich man for Lily to set her sights on. Given the overall shittiness of most of Lily’s exes, Evie had figured she would be a lot more vocally against Lily dating again, but Bart...
Bart himself may terrify Evie, but Evie’s unwavering faith that Chuck will always protect her outweighs that fear, and Evie has long since given up on her mom caring about her opinions so she just takes comfort in the fact that Chuck will be there and tries to just ignore the rest — and the fact that Bart is pretty much always away does help with that. That being said, she was very distraught when Bart spends season 1 christmas with them, but then Bart’s “present” for her was flying Chuck home for a few days because Lily mentioned that Eric was teasing Evie about being excited about having Chuck as a brother, and he's trying to semi-win over the kids (aka bribe them into accepting him as Lily’s fiancé)
Evie speaks several languages! She started learning French and Spanish at a very young age, and then picked more up from Lily’s various husbands. She’s not fluent in all of them but she can hold conversations in eight languages — and four of them were from Lily’s boyfriends (and italian was half pieced together from French and Spanish), and she just keeps learning more because she tries to keep herself too busy to think at any given moment
Rufus is her favourite step-dad by far, but Chuck is her favourite step-sibling (and second favourite sibling, after Eric). That being said, Bart was surprisingly decent to her because even he quickly figured out that Evie has the innate ability to get Chuck to do basically anything, and he wanted her on his side, only he underestimated how much Evie hates him for treating Chuck like shit — as she says in 2x07, “if you want us to be a family, you should learn how to be a dad”
Evie has a bit of a thing for stealing coats lmao — it’s not unusual to find her stealing Chuck, Eric, Theo, or even Nate’s jackets when she gets cold or starts feeling particularly self conscious. At the housewarming party she actually gets to bothered by all the media watching her constantly that Chuck goes and gets her one of his blazers to replace the cropped one she was wearing, and she immediately feels a bit more at east
Evie is a jock like it’s understated but she’s on multiple sports teams at school and plays outside of school too — she’s also in dance classes several times a week, along with private vocal lessons, and being part of every theatre production at Constance Billard (musicals and plays), and is on the yearbook committee. Basically, Evie needs a fucking nap, and with a lot of pushing from Chuck and Eric and Theo (to balance out Blair “do absolutely everything in the name of Yale” Waldorf) she does eventually ease up on her extra-curriculars
She holds far too much power in the Constance-St Jude hierarchy. She’s a freshman, but it’s well known that Evie is completely untouchable. Some people (cough Jenny) might try to cross Blair, but no one is stupid enough to go after Evie — she’s not just Blair’s protégée, she’s also under Chuck’s protection. And when Jenny does try to cross her in season 3 (physical and emotional bullshit, public humiliation, telling the entire school she’d tried to kill herself and had been at Ostroff not “in florida”), well... she learns that even being family won’t stop her entire life from being destroyed
Speaking of Jenny... that’s a very messy relationship — I want to like Jenny, I really do, but I just... don’t so far. They’re a very sweet relationship early on, neither of them had dated before and they were just really smitten with each other and things were good. There were definitely some issues because of the Jenny-Blair war, but they’d been okay — or so Evie had thought, until Jenny dumped her by means of introducing everyone to her new boyfriend, Asher. Then of course there’s the party and Jenny outing her, and then just not talking to her for months until she needs something from them (an in to the White Party). Eric manages to convince Evie to play nice, but he does so under the impression that Jenny had apologized to Evie — he didn’t know she’d only apologized to him. Eventually Jenny does apologize and Evie tries to forgive her, and she keeps giving Jenny more and more second chances (especially once they become step sisters), but Jenny really just keeps hurting Evie to get on top because with Blair gone, Evie immediately becomes the new queen, and Jenny cares more about being queen than being nice. Little does she realize that part of why Evie became queen with no challenge is because she’s nice.
and regarding Evie’s other relationships... so serena was a really good big sister when Eric & Evie were kids — Blair was the responsible sister and Serena was the fun sister, but it was a good balance and it worked. But when the twins were around eleven and Serena was around 13, she became besties with Georgina Sparks, and everything went to shit. Serena started getting into partying and drinking and drugs and became just as flighty and unreliable as Lily, which takes a significant toll on the twins’ mental health — side note, one of their therapists at the Ostroff Centre believes that their significant codependency stems from the abandonment issues they have as a result of Lily and Serena just up and leaving them whenever anything “better” comes along.
And unfortunately for the twins, this was around the same time (grade 6) that Theo got sent to boarding school, so really they lost both their sister and their best friend at the same time, and Theo leaving also messed up the overall group dynamics and they half lost Nate too — he was still in their lives but he went from being the dad to Blair’s mom to being more of a big brother, and there was this sort of hole that didn’t get filled until a couple of years later.
And of course, a lot of it then fell to Blair to try to fill that hole and the holes left by Serena and Lily and went from being sort of “mom friend big sister” to “literally the closest thing we have to a mom”, which is also just a lot of pressure for a thirteen year old girl and part of why Blair and Chuck got a lot closer after he ended up becoming their dad was because she finally had someone that she could talk to too.
Also like full disclosure, Chuck never really intended to become their dad. He started off as a reluctant big brother because he was Nate’s best friend and Nate was the dad friend when they were younger, and Evie just kind of decided that she loved him and like no one can argue with Evie so all of a sudden he was part of the family. He doesn’t really become dad until the van der Woodsens move into the hotel because suddenly Eric and Evie are just always there, and he doesn’t even realize it until months later, after Serena is gone and he realizes that he’s been skipping parties to like play mario kart and shit with the twins and Blair is just like “lmao yeah buddy you’re the last one to get this memo”
and then there’s this list that I made of the NJBC’s roles in raising the twins and theo back when they were younger
Blair: holds their hands to cross the street, teaches them not to talk to people who wear sneakers or to strangers, teaches them how to dress themselves like respectable people, makes them finish their homework before watching tv, hates all of their nannies and only trusts dorota to take care of them Nate: teaches them to tie their laces and their ties, plays video games and sports with them, helps them with homework and doesn't get impatient when they struggle, lets them use his notebooks to draw in when they're bored Chuck: will destroy anyone who hurts them, teaches them street smarts and how to tell when someone is lying, is the one who lets them do dumb and reckless things because he'd rather they do them when he's there to get in trouble, still refuses to believe that they know what sex is Serena: reminded them that it's okay to have fun and draw outside the lines, stood up for them when lily was being a shit mom and always tried to protect them from the worst of her neglect, came up with games to play when they were sad to take their minds off whatever is upsetting them
And Theo!!!!!! Theo has been their best friend for their entire lives! They’ve known him since they were babies and the three of them have always been inseparable! Like highkey they were just a more functional NJBC lmao, and we love them for it! Theo getting sent to boarding school was really hard on all three of them but they stayed in constant contact and whenever Theo is back in the city, it’s almost impossible to see them not together. Theo does know that they were in the Centre, so once he’s back full time, he’s spending as much time visiting them as he can! Even when Eric and Theo are dating (and later when Evie and Theo are dating), the group dynamics really never change! It’s still always the three of them, and sometimes Jenny in s1, they’re still each other’s family, and they’re still just a bit too interdependent to be entirely healthy (it’s the trauma and neglectful parents)
on a slightly related note, neither of the twins drink anything other than champagne and sometimes wine, and neither of them touch drugs at all, and it’s entirely because of Serena. They’ve both seen how much she’s changed since she got into that scene, and especially since ‘liking partying’ turned into ‘alcohol addiction’, and they’re both too afraid of ending up like that to even take the risk. It’s something that definitely sets them apart from pretty much any of their peers, but they’ve gotten very good at just laughing it off with a “hey, I just don’t want to end up on Gossip Girl tomorrow” which people generally accept
(that being said, Evie did smoke for a while pre-canon bc cigarettes curb hunger, but she hasn’t smoked at all since ending up in the Centre, and once she’s out too many people have an eye on her for her to even try, and she does want to stop)
(TW ATTEMPTED SUICIDE, fairly detailed discussion) so okay the breaking point for the twins... lily had just gone awol again and Blair was away visiting her dad and evie was at the archibalds’ house hanging out with theo, who was home for a weekend, and eric didn’t want to call anyone because lily’s disappearance had left him in a spiral of feeling annoying and like people didn’t really want him in their lives and there wasn’t a specific trigger but instead of the spiral slowing down or evie/chuck/blair being able to pull him out of it, it just kept getting worse until he was slitting his wrist in the bathroom — only Evie had just gotten home and when he didn’t reply to her calling his name, she got freaked out and started looking for him and when she saw him, she just... couldn’t deal. She called 911 for eric but then she was just in the bathroom and covered in his blood and she didn’t know what to do and she needed to calm down so she grabbed a bottle of valium that she thinks was Lily’s but instead of just taking one pill she ended up taking all of them and downing them with a bottle of vodka serena had hidden — once she realized what she’d done she called Chuck and basically just said “I think I fucked up” and Chuck freaks out (understandably) and rushes to their suite and gets there basically just in time to see both of them being loaded into an ambulance; he claims he’s their brother and rides with them to the hospital where he calls blair, and arranges for his jet to pick her up asap, and then tries (unsuccessfully) to get in touch with lily

1x09 - Blair Waldorf must pie!
Once again this took way longer than I wanted to. I guess it has a lot to do that this part of S1 is full of episodes that I loved and also are kind of important so I just feel that I have to be really in the mood to watch them with my full attention.
Anyway, enough about me, here’s the recap for this one after the break.
Thoughts I had while watching the episode
Loving the flashback of Serena in her wild days and Blair looking after her.
This flashback kind of messes up the timeline though. Because we’re told Serena was gone for a year, but that’s clearly not the case here.
Dan get’s to be Serena’s knight in shiny armor, great. To bad for him she was wasted.
How long ago was it that Blair’s dad been gone? Probs like quite a few months and he hasn’t come to visit her?
I mean I get that Dan is pissed with his mom, but that guilt comment was harsh
Harold Waldorf’s pumpkin pie, I don’t know if anyone has read as much fanfic as I have but this pie, is quite the celebrity.
The oh so casual mention that Blair takes Lexapro :/
Serena trying (and failing) to be casual when asking what Chuck’s doing today.
I think this is the first time that Serena (and later Nate) point out that Chuck and Blair are friends, considering they all were, this must mean that they were somehow closer friends.
This fight is such a clear example of how Blair and Serena go from besties to enemies in 5 seconds flat.
This one though is kind of funny to me in the way Serena’s like “I won’t judge” and then does exactly that.
Somehow Blair I don’t believe you when you say you don’t like Chuck’s natural musk, just a hunch.
I kind of feel Serena’s way of aproaching this topic was not the best, though to be fair Blair’s also really hard to approach.
Lilly how much I missed you last episode
Seeing Llily, Eric and Serena in Chinatown is giving me life for some reason
So by thanksgiving sophomore year Blair was already in recovery from her ED, she was really young when she started then.
Wow, “not this one Harold, we have to go together” this line implies so much and I can’t believe I never noticed before
Blair sending Nate to deal with Serena it’s interesting, because I wouldn’t imagine her being naive enough to not noticed Nate’s interest in Serena, granted she trusted them, but still
I love Dorota, always there for Blair, always loyal.
The mood at Nate’s thanksgiving dinner is so misserable.
Lily, Allison’s and Rufus faces are priceless. Let the drama begin!
“Oh the blond you stalk at school” really they told us and we didn’t listen!!!
Not that didn’t earned herself the harsh comment but, “he didn’t left us, he left you” kind of made me feel bad for Eleanor
Forget it, she was really insentive, and Blair’s face when she grabbed that pie is just heartbreaking.
I can’t believe I forgot about her throwing up incident after that dinner with Nate in the pilot... like wow.
Do you need to go with her? sorry Allison
This dinner is hilariously akward. Sorry Jenny, but I don’t think that song was about your mom.
This is one of my favorite Serante scenes, it’s so them.
Honestly this show needed more flashblacks. I love knowing more about their friendship pre series.
Nate thinking of calling Blair and then Serena, and realizing he can’t is the first time I think he truly gets how he really messed it up
It’s so weird now to see Blai’rs bathroom with the door conecting it to the other room.
Allison calling her character in a play Milly in reference to Lily sheds a bit of ligh in Dan’s abbilities in naming characters.
The captain reached rock bottom, poor Nate.
I wonder though if Anne was the one with the money, and yet Nate’s last name is prestigious, does that mean The Captain family had lost their money at some point and the only thing that remain was their last name?
I should have mentioned it before but Blair looks incredibly pretty this episode, and the dress is one of my all time favorites.
“But we’re not related” give it time Dan, give it time
Hi Cedric.
“Only a woman that had satisfied her sexual appetite in her youth could have married some of your step fathers” auch
And so Rufly ends... for now
Eleanor talking about the divorce paper and how she feels and how she acted because of it, reminded of a certain scene in S5. Blair’s truly her mother daughter.
The end of that flashback felt so much like this is why they say ignorance is Bliss. Except for Serena things are better for her now.
The New York setting makes this show even more awsome, that shot with the Bridge and the Manhattan skyline in the background while Dan’s family is having a merry old time is gorgeous.
So this episode was so good, it gave a lot of background information and added much more depth to some of the main characters, particularly Blair. But also Nate. I was really suprised by the amount of stuff I didn’t remember about this particular episode, so in that sense this feel like this is the episode I’ve enjoyed the most during my rewatch.
Having a flashback was easily the best part of this episode in the sense that it gives us a clear idea of how things were before the series and how disaster was brewing just beneath the surface. What a diference a year makes. The previous thanksgiving was at the height of Serena’s wild days, and it’s sad to see how her life was pretty much a never ending haze of parties and alcohol, she may be acting goofy but it’s an empty happiness and it let’s you feeling like this is the only way she can deal with her life. And always looking after her is Blair.
The Blair of a year before seems really happy, she’s on the road of recovery from her eating disorder, her parents are together, her mother is showing actually some concern for her, and Nate is still a loving boyfriend. And yet in many ways this is all a lie. Her parent’s marriage is just a charade, Eleanor’s comment asking Harold not to go after Roman, is so telling and it makes me wonder how long did Eleanor knew her husband was gay? that must have been such a burden for her, and it’s probably the reason why she was so focused in her work and wanted everything else to be perfect, in some ways it also explains her treating of Blair, wrong as it was.
Also the timing of this makes me kind of mad at Harold, he’s always comes across as the nice good parent, but this episode makes it really obvius how much his absence hurt Blair. Think about it. When the show starts it’s established that a few months before Harold had left his wife and the country in favor for a life in Paris with another man. So considering that november the previous year (only a year before the current episode) is the first time Harold hears about Roman this means he decided to leave his family for a guy he had just meth a few months before, I guess he must have really fallen in love and really quickly, and I understand his need to live a free life, but what a shock it must have been for Blair and how unloved she must have felt that his father was leaving her in New York with a mother that was incredibly hard on her, for a guy he just met. And this at a time when she was still recovering.
There’s also the Nate-Serena-Blair issue. At some poing after Thanksgiving, the Shepperd Wedding happened, which means like I mentioned before that Serena was gone less than a year, and the way Blair encouraged Nate to help her with Serena means that even if she may have suspect Nate’s interest in Serena she still believed that Nate did love her and that Serena would never do that to her and therefore she wasn’t worried about it. Blair doesn’t trust easily and in this case she did and it end ups with her being betrayed, and yet it was a long time coming. Just as I mentioned in previous recaps that there was lowkey something to Blair and Chuck’s friendship, the same can be said about Nate and Serena, I don’t like to mention at least not much future events in these recaps but really compare this scene of Nate and Serena goofing around in the bathroom with any of their scenes in the second half of S3 and they’re really similar, same vibe and chemistry. Nate and Blair goodbye at the end of the flashback even if he gaves her a kiss and calls her sweetheart, seems so lacking in comparison to his previous moment with Serena, and yet Blair smiles and it’s really happy about her life.
So all of this shows how much she had been hurting at the start of the show, her father gone, her best friend gone and a distant boyfriend who by this point couldn’t hide his interest in Serena coming across by how afected he was by her absence, and when the show starts it gets even worse. All the flashbacks of Blair dealing with food and even throwing up once when she was trying to forgive Nate his infidelity show us the depth of her problems and suffering and helps us to understand her so much more and feel for her. And in her moment of weakness she calls Serena, the fight at the star of the episode was a way of letting us know that in some ways Blair hasn’t let go completely of her betreyal and yet how easily their dissagrements go out of the picture the moment they really need each other, is such a deep friendhip, and yet how conflicting it must be for Blair to love and need so much a person who in many ways is a reminder of how things have gone wrong in the last year.
That is the crux about their friendship, they’re both there for each other when it really matters but it’s undenaible that they have hurt each other deeply, even without meaning too, Serena is a the root of some of Blair self steem issues, is not her fault but it has done Blair incredibly damage, at the same time Blair may be always there for Serena looking after her, but she’s frequently incredible cruel with her at times without a real reason beyond a missplaced sense of hurting her too, which causes scenes like their fight this episode where Serena tries to be a friend, becomes a little judgy and Blair overreacts and Serena understandably fights back... it’s a really complex relationship, and one of the aspects of the show that make’s it stand out.
Lastly, this episode is a good reminder of how ultimetly Ruflly and Derena can’t really function at the same time without it being weird for everyone involved, it also establishes the similitudes between both relationships, a warning of how things could end for Dan and Serena if they’re not careful, and this is only the start. Nate’s storyline this episode was super sad, last episode had him standing up to his parents, this one finally gets him to have some honest conversations with them, and while it hurts is nice to see him finally get to that moment. It’s a moment of real growth for him. It also gives some interesting background to his family history, about how Anne’s family (the Vanderbilts) are the real force behind his family life, the house, his father job... everything was given by the Vanderbilts. It makes me wonder a lot about the Captain’s family, and his history with Anne: did the captain came from a family with a prestigious Last name but that had lost their money at some point?, or was he an upstart? I can’t see snobish Anne falling in love with a nobody, but who nows.
Also, not that noticible at this point of the show beyond the paralles between Dan & Serena and Rufus and Lily, but in the last two episode some scenes of Eleanor and the captain had reminded me of future scenes and situations and Nate and Blair having similar reactions. Anyway I love this episode, the then and now, and how much more there is to these characters.
Random bits:
This is the first direct mention of Blair having an eating dissorder (not sure though, this is why I wanted to be faster with these recaps, so I don’t forget details)
Dorota’s wearing a themed apron, how cute
First mention of the Snowflake Ball, I like consistency hahaha.
Nate’s house look lovely, not sure if these are the real interiors of the house, probably not, but I did read somewhere the house used to be on rental? can’t remember.
There was a picture behind Jenny while they were having dinner of a kid wearing a suit, I know the cast used some actual photos of the cast as kids, so I don’t know if the kid is Penn but god the kid is so cute.
I’m not a New Yorker, but that place where Dan and his family are playing it’s really changed now isn’t it? There’s this guy called Action Kid in youtube and he was amazing videos about New York, and of this location in particular if my memory serves me right.
And because we rarely got to see Serena in her wild days, I feel I should end this post with just that.

Chapter 16
The party ended fairly quickly after what happened. I clung to Sephiroth, my head lowered, and tried to block out the judgemental stares of the other guests. Just waiting for the evening to be over. Then I would have to explain to Sephiroth what the plan was and see what he had to say to that.
It was all going so fast. Before I knew it, I sat on the backseat of Rufus‘ private limousine, looking out into the darkness of the city through tinted windows.
„So what is that plan you‘ve been talking about?“, Sephiroth finally asked.
I bit my lip and looked over to Rufus, who kept his eyes on the road. He had chosen not to let his chauffeur drive us because he was on President Shinra‘s payroll and thus couldn‘t be trusted. „You‘re going to get married.“
„Wait, what?“ Sephiroth looked from me to Rufus and back again. „That‘s more than just a bit sudden.“
„I‘m sorry“, I sighed. „Rufus said it would be a good idea to get legally married. Just to cover our bases. So he‘s taking us to the courthouse.“ I bit my lip and met his gaze. „You don‘t have to… do this, if you don‘t want to.“
Sephiroth was quiet for a long moment before answering:„I want to. I just wish the circumstances were better.“
„Me too.“ I leaned my head on his shoulder and entwined my hand with his. „I mean I never wanted a big wedding. But something small and intimate with our friends there to celebrate with us...“
He lifted my hand to his lips and kissed my knuckles. „We‘ll have a proper wedding reception once all of this is over. Once Genesis is safe and we‘ve got Shinra off our backs. I promise.“ Then he paused. „...We don‘t even have rings.“
„You don‘t even have to see it as a wedding if you don‘t want to“, Rufus reminded us. „Though it will legally count as one.“
I bit my lip. Damn, I must have sounded really ungrateful to him. „I‘m so sorry, Rufus.“
„It‘s okay. I know that this whole situation is far from ideal.“ And finally, he stopped the car in front of the courthouse. „I‘ve made some calls during the party. The people inside have been informed. All you really need to do is to say ‚I do‘ and sign the paperwork.“
We got out of the car and Rufus walked ahead. I wanted to follow, but Sephiroth held me back. „Wait. There‘s something I need to tell you. Before we… ‚Say I Do and sign the paperwork‘, as Rufus put it.“ He looked slightly uncomfortable, his eyes darting around and focussing on anything but me. „I probably should have told you earlier. I don‘t know if it would have changed anything, but you deserve to know.“
„About what?“, I asked.
He sighed, taking my hands in his. „Do you remember how I told you that I had a few flings in my teens?“
„Yes, I remember.“
Sephiroth looked off to the side. „...Justine was one of those flings. That‘s why she is even more obsessed with me than the… average obsessed fan. I made it absolutely clear to her that it was just a single night. I told her that before sleeping with her, in no uncertain terms. And once we were done, she started talking about marriage. How amazing and special it was to her, and so on and so forth. And in what was admittedly not my best moment, I just got up and walked out on her while she was mid-sentence.“
I looked into his eyes. „Why are you telling me this now?“
„Because we are about to be legally bound to each other. And I don‘t want there to be any secrets between us. Especially if the secrets in question caused you to be aussaulted several times. And I hope it doesn‘t make you think any less of me.“
„Well. As you said. Not your best moment. But we all made mistakes when we were teenagers. And she is the one who tried to force a relationship despite you not being interested. You set the necessary boundaries, and she chose to try and ignore them.“
Sephiroth smiled and kissed me. „Come on. We don‘t want to be late to our own wedding.“
Rufus was already impatiently tapping his foot when we finally entered the courthouse. „What took you so long? Did you get cold feet?“
„No“, Sephiroth replied. „We just had to set the record straight on something.“ Rufus looked at us for a moment and then sighed. „Alright then.“
The officiant, a pleasant looking woman in her forties, approached us. „Ms. Hunter and Mr…. Uh… Sephiroth… your guests are already waiting. If you would please follow me...“
She brought us into a small room that was almost entirely filled by a big table. Two seats were decorated with candles, rose petals and a beautifully decorated pen to sign the paperwork with; so that‘s where we sat down. Zack, Angeal and Yui sat a few seats away from us, their smiles looking slightly strained. I noticed that there was an empty chair between Yui and Angeal, and before I could ask about it, the door to the room opened and Genesis stepped in as if he hadn‘t gone rogue and attacked the Shinra building just a month ago. He took the seat between Yui and Zack, his wing folded so it wasn‘t in the way, and crossed his arms. His hair was now entirely white, and his skin looked like cracked marble. Pale and brittle. But he was smiling, and so was Yui. „Sorry for being late. I had to make sure nobody saw me.“
Sephiroth chuckled. „It‘s good to have you here, Genesis.“
The officiant, who had stared at our last arriving guest with horror for a moment, delicately cleared her throat. „Well, as you all know, we are gathered here today to join Ms. Cora Hunter and Mr. Sephiroth, to allow them to become the family they wish to be, in the eyes of the law and the people. To be each other‘s safe haven, to be bound in both love and duty, to grow and enrich each other‘s lives. So I now ask you: Do you, Cora Hunter, take Sephiroth as your lawfully wedded husband?“
I tried to remind myself that this was just for safety and we weren‘t going to treat it like a marriage. But I choked up and whispered a barely audible:„I do.“
„Sephiroth, do you take Cora Hunter to be your lawfully wedded wife?“
He looked over to me, a small smile tugging at his lips. „I do.“
The officiant slid the necessary paperwork over to us. „Then please sign this with the surname you intend to use as a married couple.“ She smiled. „And you can of course feel free to kiss your bride.“
Sephiroth grabbed the pen provided and wrote „Sephiroth Hunter“ at the bottom of the sheet. Then he slid it over to me. I stared at his signature for a moment. Right, why hadn‘t I thought of this before? Sephiroth technically didn‘t have a surname, so he kind of had to take mine, now that we were…. Married.
I took a deep breath, signed with my full name and then slid the papers over to Rufus so he could sign as a witness. And once I had done so, Sephiroth cupped my cheek and guided me into a gentle kiss.
„I love you.
„I love you too.“
The officiant cleared her throat once more. „I wish you all the best for your future together. Whatever it may look like.“
I took a deep, relieved breath once we got out of the courthouse. Then I turned to Genesis. „I‘m so glad you came, Genesis.“
„There is no way I would miss Sephiroth‘s wedding. Though I must say it pretty anticlimactic. I kind of imagined a wedding between a the great hero Sephiroth and a member of Midgar‘s upper crust to be a bit more… lavish. And involve a lot of planning.“
I sighed and looked at our gathered freinds. „I think we should give Genesis a bit of a summary of what happened these last few days.“
„We can do that on our way out of the city“, Rufus said and ushered all of us towards the car. „I‘ve already made all of the necessary preparations, and we can‘t risk going back and being caught by my father‘s goons. Pretty sure he already figured out what we were planning.“
„What about my dad?“, I asked again. „He‘s still in the Shinra building, right? What if they decide hold him hostage?“
„Your father is alright“, Rufus replied. „I already had someone pick him up and take him somewhere where my father won‘t find him that quickly. I promised to keep him safe, didn‘t I? Now you just have to repay me by keeping yourself safe. That‘s the whole point of all of this. Now get in the car.“

If you’re still taking prompts, the moment Emmett realized he was in love with Elle! I hope you feel cheered up soon!
Emmett Forrest didn’t believe in love at first sight. Hell, he wasn’t even sure if he believed in love.
He’d seen with his own eyes the damage infatuation could do – remembered well the sight of his mother bent over the kitchen sink sobbing as his father shifted the last of his belongings out of their suddenly echoing home. In his studies, he’d read about enough rotten cases, of beaten wives and murdered husbands and jealous lovers, that the whole concept of love made his stomach clench. If nothing else would, trawling through the grim details of Callahan’s marriage, with its countless affairs and assaults, had killed any romantic notions in him.
So no, Emmett didn’t believe in love, and had taken the time to craft a perfect wall of logic to keep anyone who challenged that out.
It was a shame, then, that Elle Woods had walked into his life like a pretty pink sledgehammer.
At first, she seemed to validate everything he’d told himself; another spurned woman desperately trying to win back a long-gone lover. Not that her being a woman had anything to do with it – she just reminded him too much of his mother in that respect. Paulette too had been an example of this, barely able to talk to her ex without shaking, despite her usually exuberant personality and supportive friends. Neither she nor Elle nor anyone else deserved that level of heartache.
But Emmett had to admit, that wasn’t all he saw. Elle was loved almost as much as she was detested by their Harvard class, but Emmett could see the balances tilting in her favour. There was just this sweetness to her that made every encounter with her like birdsong, gentle and calming and safe. She remembered birthdays and the names of pets and people’s favourite colours. She took the time to know people deeply, even people who hated her. She loved them as dearly as close friends, even when they sneered.
With the people who liked her, she was even more stunning. Emmett had watched her talk for hours with Paulette about the minutia of haircare and both women seemed so excited and inspired by each other’s presence. Elle on the phone to the Delta Nus was even brighter – she managed to coax even the shyest of their group into wild happy laughter.
And with him? The first time she smiled at him – really smiled, not just that polite little grin she gave in class – a small part of him knew he’d never be the same.
Initially he tried to ignore it – to disregard the way his stomach flipped whenever she laughed or scrunched up her nose when she was thinking. He certainly didn’t feel his cheeks getting warm every time she got an answer right in class and wriggled in her seat with excitement, flashing him a thumbs up with her eyes shining. If he smiled back, it was simply benevolent scholarly admiration.
But before he could even blink, she’d shimmied her way into his heart and painted its walls pink. He wasn’t even quite sure what moment tipped him over the edge.
There had certainly been times where he’d felt fond of her, and when she’d made him smile so much his cheeks ached. The first time she stood up for herself against Warner in class, Emmett had been ready to jump on the desk and start singing her praises. When she had very excitedly pointed to the menorah she had tucked amongst her Christmas decorations with his name proudly written on in puffy pink paint, he’d had to blink away tears of happiness – it had been so long since he’d celebrated the holidays and just thinking of the menorah powered him through some truly awful shifts. And when she’d handed her resume into Callahan for the internship, well, he couldn’t have been prouder.
But love? Love was different. If he had to pin down the first moment he realised he wanted to spend the rest of his life with this strange sparkling woman, he’d have to point to Rufus’ rescue. When Elle had asked him to accompany Paulette and herself to Dewey’s trailer, he’d been sceptical; as much as it was useful to have a real life legal example to study from, negotiating custody for a bulldog seemed like a stretch. But she’d been so passionate and invested that he couldn’t turn her down, and seeing how affectionately she treated Paulette, he felt the now familiar warmth spreading through him. She really was a wonderful woman.
And then she had done the extraordinary – with only the slightest prompting from Emmett, she’d used her brilliant brain and constructed an entire legal defence in minutes. She hadn’t balked in the face of Dewey’s rage and confusion, but had quickly negotiated the situation, freeing Rufus with a whirlwind of words. As they trekked back to the car, Paulette had sobbed tears of joy, and Elle had cried along with her.
If Emmett could have held onto that one memory, it would have been enough to sustain him for a lifetime, but as he’d come to expect from Elle, she managed to do one better. Not only had her compassion and kindness won the day, it had motivated her to act.
“Hey Em?” She’d asked a little while later over congratulatory smoothies. “Was that… law? That we just did with Paulette? Because it felt amazing.”
“What, winning a case?” He said, taking a sip. The drink was far sugarier than anything he’d normally drink, but it was refreshing and he liked seeing Elle smile when he’d matched her order. “I guess it is pretty satisfying.”
“That’s not what I meant. We’re like… fighting for the underdog, you know? Looking after people who can’t look after themselves - using our studies to take care of those who need us.” She smiled, puffing her chest out a little as she did so. “If helping people feels this good, then it’s all I want to do for the rest of my life.”
And that’s when Emmett Forrest fell head over heels for Elle Woods. She was brilliant and beautiful, charming and clever. But more than that – more than anything – she was kind to her core. Kinder than anyone else at Harvard. Kinder than he was certainly; as much as he enjoyed helping people, he’d ran to law as a stable job with a solid paycheck. But all she wanted to do was improve the lives of others. To make everything a little brighter than when she found it.
They had returned to their drinks and their conversations and eventually the topic changed to the internship or their evening plans. But from that moment on, all Emmett could see in every bounce of Elle’s step, or flip of her hair, was her urge to help.
And if that was love, he’d grab it with both hands. (Hey - hope that was okay! The ending kind of got away from me but I loved writing it anyway!)

The Best Friend's Wedding
Present day!Roger Taylor x Reader
Summary: The one in which R!Reader and Roger get married but it’s also a description of how R!Reader and B!Reader became friends.
Warnings: Slight angst at the beginning but then it is all fluff, I swear.
A/N: I kinda imagine B!Reader spends a lot of time in Scotland (we shall get more on that soon)... I am not a big fan of weddings for some reason, but I wanted to give R!Reader out there a beautiful story too! Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy!
| Guide to The Original Timeline |
• 7 hours before the wedding
"Oh, come on!" The brunette smiled at her best friend, a coffee cup in her hand.
“I am not making a fuss!” The young bride cried into the air throwing her head back.
“It’s nothin’! A tiny pimple, no big deal really...” Her friend tapped the r.
“Are you gonna talk like that from now on?” The annoyed blonde turned back to her friend from the image bothering her in the mirror.
R!Reader bit back a smile and opened her eyes wide at the other woman in her hotel room.
The two stood facing each other in their pajamas, staring as one made fun of the other first thing in the morning.
“You don’t have to be mean about it.” She blushed, taking a step back and clearing her throat to remind herself of the usual way in which she spoke. “I spent almost an entire year working with Scots, something had to stick, right?”
“History!” R!Reader stuck out her hip and brought her hand to her side. “You are the poshest little thing since Regattas!”
“Ugh, that’s nonsense!” She shook her head much like her husband often did. “And such a rich comment coming from the one who spent her summer on a boat in Ibiza...”
B!Reader rolled her eyes and strolled around the suite until she could put her coffee down on the small table across the room.
“Roger likes boats, what can I say?” She shrugged.
R!Reader looked back at herself in the mirror and returned to her primary concern of the morning. A pimple on the side of her jawline. A horrible surprise for her wedding day. She had pictured that everything would go as planned this day; with her hair and makeup getting done right before lunch she would have the chance to really get through her morning routine without any rush. She had invited B!Reader for dinner the night before, she came along with Lola and Rory, but the young Taylors left before it got too late, making sure they would then be in top shape for the long day ahead with being maids of honour and all...
The only one who stayed behind was B!Reader. They probably should not have stayed up till late...but they did. They definitely did not have to eat crisps at 2 am either. And the opening of a bottle of sparkling white wine each was without a doubt uncalled for.
“I knew the snacks were a bad idea!” The blonde grunted.
“Ah, you’ll be fine!”
While the blonde bride moaned about in the bathroom, B!Reader went back to the room and threw herself face-first into the bed. She was glad just then that R!Reader was not her friend when she got married to Brian, in that case, she would have for sure been sporting a hangover on her way down the aisle. For the time being, she knew she had to call Brian and let him know she was okay. If she knew him, he would have finished his morning routine on the bike by then.
“Do you know those bastards from the Sun called me “a shameless golddigger with a little mind and not much to offer but a pretty face ”?” I am actually quoting it, they wrote that after we made the announcement.”
B!Reader turned around on the fluffy bedsheets and duvet and looked at her friend with a crinkled nose and low brow.
There it was: the good reason for her insecurities. The press.
“They know nothing about you!” She sat up, pushing herself with her elbows and then straightening her spine. “Look at us, for instance! I wasn’t sure about you at first... and then when we started talking... I realised just how funny and smart you are! Clever too! R!Reader, you’ve done things I would never dare do... and now you’re here! Don’t let these people who don’t know you put you down - at least not today!”
The blonde crossed her arms over her chest and the corners of her mouth twitched upwards.
“You hated me,” She declared with certain disdain.
“No, I didn’t hate you...” B!Reader explained shaking her head.
“You didn’t like me,” R!Reader nudged her friend and sat next to her while she agreed on that one.
The two women looked at the clock on the bedside table reading almost noon. The curtains were drawn closed and the room was still except for the tray of breakfast foods across from the pair, a steaming cup of coffee sat there. Grey lines of warmth drew shapes in the air floating around the elegant china, the French press coffee waited right next to it.
With a grin, R!Reader looked down at her left hand and had a look at her engagement ring. The large rock shinning in her finger was surrounded by other smaller and similarly glowing rocks. She turned her head and searched for B!Reader’s eyes.
“What do you mean...things you would never do?” She tilted her head the side, eyes narrowing at her friend’s shock.
The brunette’s face heated up with blush and she stuttered when she spoke again.
“Well, what I mean...what I wanted to say is... I-” She cut herself and blinked a few times before sighing and starting over. “What I mean doesn’t sound nice... I would have never cheated.”
R!Reader looked away feeling the weight of disappointment on the pit of her stomach once again. It had been a familiar feeling to her for over a year, although sometimes it still caught her off guard. It was the knowledge that she had been the other woman, and she did not like it...but it was the way it was. Many would judge for sleeping with a married man, touch and be touched by a man whose hands should have already been bound to someone else. Many people thought of her as a nasty woman. A worthless human who hurt people just because.
These people could not be further from the truth. That whole situation was killing R!Reader slowly. Being the other woman did not mean she would wait for Roger to swing by and fuck. They did get carried away more than occasionally, yet it was not the root of their relationship. They would always speak for hours, sometimes Roger would arrive at R!Reader’s a little bit earlier than they had agreed and he would watch her make dinner, helping the slightest and distracting her the entire time. Some days she would feel ill, or be in a mood and Roger would have to swing by and hold her for a while to soothe her. Some other times he would be the one having a rough day, and the younger one would then let him rest his head on her chest and read for him. They could spend hours together and not even kiss... she knew that although for many that did not matter as much as the sex did, this need they had to be with each other was the actual cheating. The part that was wrong and that would hurt Roger’s wife. It made R!Reader’s stomach turn, and flip around inside her. She could feel her heart sink in her chest when Roger left in the evenings, leaving her to her quiet flat and empty bed. Her body always fell limp and her mouth went dry when her friends asked about her love life. “You are such a catch, why aren’t you seeing anyone?” Some would say. It hurt even worse when the comments came from Tigerlily or Rufus. She felt responsible, guilty.
As responsible and guilty as she felt right sitting there next to B!Reader. A woman who fell for a man obviously too old for her and did not care. A woman her age who never cheated.
“...I wanted to,” she admitted in a whisper, making the blonde’s neck snap back up, her eyes round in shock. “We probably had many chances... with Anita going on tour with her productions and me living on my own...” She shook her head and put her hand on R!Reader’s knee, “I was too scared. I loved him already. But what if he didn’t have the strength to leave his wife? I though... I didn’t want to push him to just- use me? I... don’t know. I figured Brian already had enough on his plate, didn’t need to add more guilt on top of everything.” They looked at each other, “I wasn’t brave enough. Strong enough.”
“You did the best for Brian, though.” The blonde whispered. “He is such a softy your husband...”
B!Reader broke into a smile and laughed, nodding with enthusiasm. “Yes, you can say that!”
After a moment, the bride spoke again.
“You know... in great part, Roger and I didn’t even have sex all the time! People like that to shame me for being his mistress or whatever... but mostly, we did what you used to do with Brian!”
“Hang out,” B!Reader smiled, “have fun.”
“Forget about the world!” R!Reader smiled up at the ceiling.
Her friend giggled and narrowed her eyes at her. “There must have been a lot of touching still.”
The blonde laughed, looking back at B!Reader, she was already leaning forward to stand up. “You know us!”
With a snort, B!Reader rushed her friend so she got into the shower so they could have breakfast once she came out. For the best part of the morning, they chatted and sat back to let the professionals do their hair and makeup. All of Roger’s girls, except for Rory were there that morning too, the older one had decided she would get ready on her own and assist her brothers and father with their own wedding day preparations.
R!Reader had never been a quiet girl. From a young age, she would get in trouble constantly for being too honest and too vocal about her opinions. it... it took her a few years of practice to read the people around her before speaking up, but even then she knew how to get away with small talk. Everyone buzzing about in her hotel suite was aware of all of this, which made them all think it was odd how she was so quiet and calm today.
She spent most of that time thinking while she was getting her hair and makeup done. She recalled her last conversation with Roger before his divorce. It had been nothing short of horrible. Their biggest argument yet. A full-on fight. She was desperate, clinging on to anything to stay afloat when it seemed that Roger was not going to go forward with ending his marriage...she felt dirty, broken and used. She called Roger “a disgusting piece of what used to be a man” because she was so hurt. He did not even defend himself, pursing his lips he let her blow like a bomb run out of time. That should have been the end of it; she thought when he left her place looking as mad as he had ever been, that there was no way they would see each other again.
But Roger came back.
After a moment, before she even finished calling him names and blaming him for their peculiar situation, Roger realised what the problem was. He saw her constantly closing her large sweater over her body, shielding her chest with her arms, found her eyes shining with tears and he knew. He knew those were not the result of anger but of pain. A pain he caused, there was no use in denying it like he would have done in his youth. So Roger took the verbal beating and left without saying a word.
They met that same weekend, Roger had dropped the bomb on his wife, and it was not a pleasant thing to do...but at least it helped his relationship with R!Reader. Only a few months later his divorce was settled and the first thing he did was show up at her place with a big rock in his pocket and propose.
• 3 hours before the wedding
“Earth to R!Reader!” Lola sang, moving her hand before her eyes. “You are so zen today!”
“Are you okay?” One of her childhood friends said from the makeup chair where she was getting her hair braided.
“I’m fine!” R!Reader rolled her eyes, “I’m just...” she licked her lips and sighed “overwhelmed.”
“Aw, that’s alright!” Tigerlily came up behind her and leaned on the sofa to wrap her arms around her shoulders and put her chin on her friend’s shoulder. “It’s a big day!”
“I kinda wish we had eloped...”
Her mother called her by her full name with a furrowed brow, making the rest of the women there laugh or giggle.
B!Reader clapped her hands and turned to the bride’s mother. “I guess it’s time to get her dressed...”
It was not the best day for a wedding, the weather was awful. Rain all day, clouds crowding the sky all afternoon. As R!Reader stepped into the car to get to the venue, she met her father at the door. She looked up for a second and smiled at her dad, shrugging like a child.
The bright white Cadillac awaited, her father held her for a second and helped her in. With her eyes, at last, ignoring the sky she turned to talk to her dad. A short conversation that put them both in a good mood. From the first time, she told her father that she liked a boy when she was only 5 to highschool dates and the last of them when she brought Roger home and nobody in the family knew why in the world was she dating a man almost 50 years older than her.
“It’s a weird thing... but you were always brave. Always head first into it!” He patted his daughter’s hand. “But you always made sense. You had your way to go about things, still, do.” He paused and looked out the window, seeing the venue appearing ahead, meaning they would have to get out of the car soon. “I trust you know what you’re doing. You are old enough to.”
R!Reader remained quiet for a moment and stretched out in the spacious car to wrap her arms around her father’s shoulders.
“Thank you.” She whispered into their embrace.
A moment later she stepped out of the car and stood at the end of a line with her father by her side. The walk down the aisle went by in a second to her. She watched as the guests sitting down turned their heads, necks stretching, to get a glimpse of her. The long veil covered her face and hands, going further down. She scanned through the big names, artists and famous people in the crowd. Roger could not help himself...the guest list seemed to be getting bigger and bigger every time they sat down to go over wedding details, in the end, they invited 800 people - somehow!
Roger looked brilliant. In a three-piece burgundy suit, he was also quite happy when his young bride arrived at the temporary altar and winked at him. The two smiling at each other. Her father pulled the veil off of his daughter’s face and kissed her cheek before letting her take Roger’s tattooed hand.
The wedding was beautiful, both Roger and R!Reader spent the entirety of the ceremony part giggling and stealing glances at each other. R!Reader at some point mouthed a “stop it!” at Rog when he winked at her and made her blush in front of one of the many cameras they had hired to film and photograph the event. Once Felix stepped forward and brought them the rings, he rolled his eyes at the couple, trust his dad to be fooling around in the middle of his own wedding... although it made sense and bothered no one who realised it: the odd couple had waited for too long to be able to be public and the treatment R!Reader got from the media left a lot to be desired. Now they did not care, and they were paying no attention to anyone else but each other today. Felix was almost completely ignored by the groom and bride, who grabbed the rings and put them on each other’s fingers without taking their eyes from each other. Roger did not bother hiding his smile as he did so, and his bride struggled to contain her joy in a smile through tight lips and gleaming eyes.
By the time the ceremony came to an end, R!Reader was sniffing, some tears had slipped but she wiped them quickly before turning to her husband. Oh, because they were now married. The knot was tied, and now they were free to not give a fuck about the press together. As it should have always been. And not one person in the guests’ list was surprised when Roger wrapped his arms around his wife and pulled her close.
She put her arms around his neck and let her right wrist fall on top of the left one as she smiled up at him, grinning in pure joy before he kissed her lips long and hard. People behind them cheered and clapped, and she giggled, pecking his lips to put her forehead against his.
“I can’t believe it’s done...” She whispered.
To which Roger replied by saying: “easy as that!”
She cupped his cheek and pecked his lips again before the finally turned to their guests to walk outside to the smaller bar part of the venue so the planner and his crew could get the salon ready for the reception. It was in this time that R!Reader and Roger took a chance to go to a different salon and have their pictures taken, first only the couple and then with the maids of honour, all three of Roger’s daughters and B!Reader; and the best men, both Felix and Rufus, plus Adam and Brian.
The reception started a good fifteen minutes later with the couple being introduced as they came out to perform their first dance, the two stepped out to the piano playing the first few notes of the song the couple chose, the interpreters on stage, as a personal favour to Roger; Elton came through to play one song but not without giving R!Reader a small surprise by bringing his - almost - baby son Taron on stage to sing with him for them.
“It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside...” Elton sang from the piano as Roger held R!Reader.
She had no idea Roger had arranged for the interpreters of the song to be something else than a good recording... She was over the moon, singing along and holding on to her husband. The two would not stop singing to each other quietly.
“I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind That I put down in words How wonderful life is while you're in the world”
The two kissed as the last notes played and their guests clapped around them in an echo they could barely hear.

I won’t be the first or last person to marvel at how quickly February whizzed past, especially in comparison to January’s gauntlet. To be completely fair to February, it had the ongoing COVID-19 international epidemic, as well as the ABS-CBN shutdown crisis, the anti-terrorism bill, the reminder that historical revisionism re: the Marcos dictatorship is alive and well… and those were just the actual headlines.
I must digress before I spiral.
I read 12 books in February, half of which were newly released in this month. I’ve split my post up into three parts like I did last month: one-shots, parts of series, and re-reads. It seems to be working well for me.
Prosper’s Demon by K.J. Parker
The unnamed and morally questionable narrator is an exorcist with great follow-through and few doubts. His methods aren’t delicate but they’re undeniably effective: he’ll get the demon out—he just doesn’t particularly care what happens to the person.
Prosper of Schanz is a man of science, determined to raise the world’s first philosopher-king, reared according to the purest principles. Too bad he’s demonically possessed.
After I read Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City last year, I knew that I wanted more by Parker. I considered delving into his back catalog, which I still will probably do, but I saw that he was releasing a new book in Feb 2020, so I jumped on that first. Prosper’s is exactly up my alley, what with the discussions of morality and the greater good with demons, and quite a bit of engineering. I’d admired the voice of the main character in Sixteen because he was dry and very caught up in doing what needed to be done, and the main character has the same appealing values. It’s a short read, but it sticks in the teeth and fills the belly.
Paladin’s Grace by T. Kingfisher
Stephen’s god died on the longest day of the year…
Three years later, Stephen is a broken paladin, living only for the chance to be useful before he dies. But all that changes when he encounters a fugitive named Grace in an alley and witnesses an assassination attempt gone wrong. Now the pair must navigate a web of treachery, beset on all sides by spies and poisoners, while a cryptic killer stalks one step behind…
Kingfisher, also known as Ursula Vernon, tends to write capable and damaged characters falling in with each other and foiling plots. She also tends to write paladins very well, which is a personal delight. I always enjoy a Kingfisher story, because the characters do the sensible thing more often than not, and she deals with trauma very compassionately, from what I suspect is a personal viewpoint. Her books are also usually very funny, very disturbing, and no-nonsense, scratching that Terry Pratchett Witch itch when I miss him very much. Grace is along the same lines, with a good solid HEA that leaves everyone, including the reader, satisfied.
Kindred, a Graphic Novel Adaptation by Octavia Butler, adapted by Damian Duffy and illustrated by John Jennings
I lost an arm on my last trip home.
Home is a new house with a loving husband in 1970s California that suddenly transformed in to the frightening world of the antebellum South.
Dana, a young black writer, can’t explain how she is transported across time and space to a plantation in Maryland. But she does quickly understand why: to deal with the troubles of Rufus, a conflicted white slaveholder–and her progenitor.
Her survival, her very existence, depends on it.
This searing graphic-novel adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s science fiction classic is a powerfully moving, unflinching look at the violent disturbing effects of slavery on the people it chained together, both black and white–and made kindred in the deepest sense of the word.
Kindred, the novel, is on my Next 20s list. I had meant to read it before I read the GN, but picked up the graphic novel based on a friend’s recommendation. The graphic novel is searingly painful, and I enjoyed reading it, but there are parts of it that feel slightly disjointed. I’m not sure if it’s because of the time travel, or if it’s an adaptation problem. It made me want to read the novel immediately, which is what I am reading right now. I don’t think that I’ll be able to properly synthesise my thoughts about this book until I’ve read the original.
Mirror: The Mountain and The Nest by Emma Rios and Hwei Lim
A mysterious asteroid hosts a collection of strange creatures – man-animal hybrids, mythological creatures made flesh, guardian spirits, cursed shadows – and the humans who brought them to life. But this strange society exists in an uneasy truce, in the aftermath of uprisings seeking freedom and acceptance, that have only ended in tragedy. As the ambitious, the desperate and the hopeful inhabitants of the asteroid struggle to decide their shared fate, a force greater than either animal or human seems to be silently watching the conflict, waiting for either side to finally answer the question: what is worthy of being human?
Recommended to me by a new friend who’d heard I was into sci-fi and graphic novels, who absolutely hit the nail on the head with this rec. The art is beautiful, dreamy, and layered, and it keeps you tied to the story as the authors build what is a magnificent construction in your head. The authors do some really lovely things with timeskips that I have no idea how to talk about without spoiling anything, and I only regret that we weren’t able to linger through the second volume. I’m don’t know why there isn’t more of Mirror, but I do appreciate how they tied everything up as well as they could in two volumes. Looking forward to more like this in the future.
Heartstopper: Volume Three by Alice Oseman
In this volume we’ll see the Heartstopper gang go on a school trip to Paris! Not only are Nick and Charlie navigating a new city, but also telling more people about their relationship AND learning more about the challenges each other are facing in private…
Meanwhile Tao and Elle will face their feelings for each other, Tara and Darcy share more about their relationship origin story, and the teachers supervising the trip seem… rather close…?
You can read all of Heartstopper and its future updates here. Heartstopper is a lovely slice of life comic, PG13 at best, that really takes me back to my own mid-teens. The story is centered around the developing relationship of two young boys, Charlie and Nick, and it really deals with it respectfully. It tackles a lot of teen issues without being too preachy about it, which is probably the least inspiring thing I could have written about it, and integrates it deftly into the story. The art style is adorable and really complements the sweet story. This volume, just released this month, revolves around a class trip to Paris, and there are some shenanigans that you’ll have to read for yourself.
Sixty Six Book 2 by Russell Molina and Mikey Marchan
Kuwento ni Celestino Cabal. Kabebertdey niya lang. Mayroon siyang natanggap na regalo na ngayo’y unti-unti niyang binubuksan. Ika nga ng matatanda, “Huli man daw at magaling, maihahabol din.”
The story of Celestino Cabal. His birthday has just passed. He received a gift that he now gets to open, bit by bit. As the old saying goes, “Better late than never.”
This is the synopsis of the first book. There isn’t an official synopsis for the second book online, and I hesitate to write my own. Sixty Six Book 2 was released during February Komiket, and since I had been waiting for it for a few years, I had to go to the event even though everyone’s been iffy about going into crowded spaces due to COVID-19. I was excited to read this but unfortunately, I don’t think it capitalised on the foundation set in Book 1. The artist was different, and I admired their work on a technical level, as well as their humorous use of WASAK as a sound effect. I don’t know if there’ll be a third book, but the author has made themselves a little leeway for that possibility at the end of this volume.
Thank You, Jeeves, Jeeves #5 by P.G. Wodehouse
The odds are stacked against Chuffy when he falls head over heels for American heiress Pauline Stoker. Who better to help him win her over but Jeeves, the perfect gentleman’s gentleman. But when Bertie, Pauline’s ex-fiance finds himself caught up in the fray, much to his consternation, even Jeeves struggles to get Chuffy his fairy-tale ending.
This book was in my next 20s! So I’m accomplishing one of my 2020 reading goals, yay! But hot damn there is some racist language in this book. Every time I was finally sinking into the story boom! Racist language! And I know that it was because of the time it was published, like I know that academically, but oof. That aside, the story is solid. It’s a comedy of manners AND errors with Jeeves ex machina, as per usual, but this is the first full Jeeves novel I’ve read, the rest were short story collections, and it was good to see the characters take more space. It certainly made the comedic payoff a lot stronger.
But oof.
Die Vol. 2: Split the Party by Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans, and Clayton Cowles
No one can escape DIE until everyone agrees to go home. Or rather, no one can escape DIE until everyone who is alive agrees to go home. The second arc of the commercial and critical hit of bleakly romantic fantasy fiction starts to reveal the secrets of the world, and our heroes’ pasts. Yes, they can’t escape DIE. They also can’t escape themselves. Collects issues #6-10 of DIE
CHARACTERISATION. There’s a lot more breathing space in this newly-released volume of Die and I live for that! The first volume was a lot of the characters running from one place to the next and we, as readers, were being given the sense of setting. But volume two, you can feel Gillen just finally branching out and hitting us with their joined histories. I want to see more of how these older players will be dealing with the actions of their teenage selves, and I think the third volume will really show what the comic’s capable of. I’m really looking forward to that.
False Value, Rivers of London #8 by Ben Aaronovitch
Peter Grant is facing fatherhood, and an uncertain future, with equal amounts of panic and enthusiasm. Rather than sit around, he takes a job with émigré Silicon Valley tech genius Terrence Skinner’s brand new London start up – the Serious Cybernetics Company.
Drawn into the orbit of Old Street’s famous ‘silicon roundabout’, Peter must learn how to blend in with people who are both civilians and geekier than he is. Compared to his last job, Peter thinks it should be a doddle. But magic is not finished with Mama Grant’s favourite son.
Because Terrence Skinner has a secret hidden in the bowels of the SCC. A technology that stretches back to Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage, and forward to the future of artificial intelligence. A secret that is just as magical as it technological – and just as dangerous.
The last Rivers of London book finished the first major arc of the series. It was a succession of explosions contained in a novel. So I was wondering what kind of tone Aaronovitch would be setting with False Value. Would it be all action, immediately? A filler story? I just wanted more Peter Grant. It could literally be an entire novel of Peter going to America to visit the Smithsonian museums and I would be on that.
False Value is a slow story but does a lot of table setting for the next arc. While the case of the book feels very small and contained, you can see that they’re being pulled into the larger world of magic. I did have a hard time with the first few chapters, but I’m not sure if this is a problem of the book, or because I sailed straight into it after the Jeeves book I had been reading.
I finished the book too quickly and now I have to wait for the next one. Bother.
The Thief, The Queen’s Thief #1 by Megan Whalen Turner
The king’s scholar, the magus, believes he knows the site of an ancient treasure. To attain it for his king, he needs a skillful thief, and he selects Gen from the king’s prison. The magus is interested only in the thief’s abilities.
What Gen is interested in is anyone’s guess. Their journey toward the treasure is both dangerous and difficult, lightened only imperceptibly by the tales they tell of the old gods and goddesses.
It’s March now, so my friends and I are starting on the second book in our read-along of The Queen’s Thief. I wrote last month that I was worried about how my friends would take the series, but really I needn’t have thought about it at all. The book stands well on its own, and my friends all got into the story. I hesitate to say that they loved it because there are four more books in the series, but they were definitely into it. Some of them had a hard time sticking to the two chapters a day schedule because Turner’s prose really just pulls you in.
I still love Gen, and I’m excited to relive his character growth.
The Farthest Shore, The Earthsea Cycle #3
Darkness threatens to overtake Earthsea. As the world and its wizards are losing their magic, Ged — powerful Archmage, wizard, and dragonlord — embarks on a sailing journey with highborn young prince, Arren. They travel far beyond the realm of death to discover the cause of these evil disturbances and to restore magic to a land desperately thirsty for it.
I’m reading Tehanu, the last book of the Cycle, now, and I’m scared of ending the series. It’s given me so much joy and peace these past few months. I slipped right into it after finishing The Farthest Shore, remembering that they overlap slightly, and that’s done a lot to soften the blow of the third book. Re-reading Farthest at this age, when things have been losing their colour and flavour, where I have to fight harder to keep myself honest and keep myself ‘good’, hits differently. I’ve been recovering, and the bitterness that Ged has over the loss of his mastery is too real to me. Of course, it’s a good book, but it hurts.
—
All right, that’s it for now. I’ll probably be popping in to post a little about Komiket and some other things I’ve been reading next week or so, so please keep a weather eye out for that next post!
February Reading Round-Up I won't be the first or last person to marvel at how quickly February whizzed past, especially in comparison to January's gauntlet.

Tripe. Bollocks. Absolute tosh. Deliberate distortions? Anyway, how would they know? Many ES claimed they only watched the first three episodes, then gave up because there wasn’t enough sex..(I mean, intimacy). did these people watch the whole series? Were they paying attention to what was actually going on?
gaelic-fullmoon-lady
Only at the start…😩 Season 4 she’s soap-opera-equipment
accardi1921
Yeah, where did this character go she's talking about? Not badass in S4 & doesn't always have to be but S4 Claire was Just so unhappy looking.
mylessanchez
Session 4 she’s an after thought. She had nothing in season 4. She entertained his admirers and rubbed his shoulders. Had to have irked Cait to no end
Etcetera etcetera (and ‘liked’ by people who should know better) . What a load of absolute cobblers. So here we go, Claire apparently had NOTHING to do in Season 4. Perhaps they’ve forgotten. Most likely they just blindly followed the reviews of people who were absolutley determined to be negative about the Season, about Outlander and about Caitriona Balfe, as they have been since 1st January 2018. I wonder why?
Episode 1 Claire rescues Bonnett from hanging. Badass Claire Claire sets off with her husband into a new land where they have only one relative, aunt Jocasta Claire loses her wedding ring; has presence of mind to swallow one. Badass Claire.
Episode 2 Claire encourages Jamie to reject Aunt Jocasta’s inheritance; a life of ease and luxury, because she can’t own slaves. She faces down the lynch mob; patches up Rufus, then has the courage to give him a poison to spare him from a lynching, thus breaking her hypocratic oath - first, do no harm. Badass Claire much.
Episode 3 Claire sets of with her husband into the wilderness. She can ride a horse, confront ghosts, load and fire an eighteenth century rifle. Claire is badass Claire
Episode 4 Dr Claire fixes up Myers and , husband wounded after confrontation with the man bear: makes friends with wise woman from potentially hostile indigenous people, the Cherokee. Does Claire run screaming back to civilisation? No, Claire is badass Claire.
Episode 5. Dr Claire brings baby into world. No epidurals, no midwife....Dr Claire is badass doctor. Dr Claire stops Mueller from starting war with cherokees by interposing herself between them. Badass Claire. ‘Vulture’ recap: “Claire gathers her gun, Rollo, and some decent beef jerky, and hunkers down in the cabin. She’s terrified, but in a very badass way. Mueller finally arrives, but not to kill Claire — he wants to make sure she’s okay. He also wants to give her a gift. In a horrifying reveal, Claire opens the package to find Adawehi’s scalp. I’m sorry, but the fact that Claire hasn’t had some type of breakdown yet after suffering through an unreal amount of atrocities just seems ridiculous at this point. But she soldiers on. She throws Mueller out, gives Adawehi a proper (as proper as she can) send off, and still, the carnage continues”
Episode 6 Dr Claire saves Lord Johyn from the measles, survives having her husband’s would-be gay lover and Jamie’s by-blow son drop in on them, exchanges some brutal truths with Lord John. Badass Claire
Episode 7 Yeah, okay, Claire wasn’t in THIS ONE frigging episode. Oh My God! Her badass daughter is instead.
Episode 8. Dr Claire works with her husband to save Murtagh from arrest, performs operation on local corrupt official . As Vulture says:
“There is chaos! There is commotion! Claire says he needs surgery immediately or he will die! Even in the midst of this, men are like, “But you have a vagina, how can you wield a scalpel!?” Honestly, Claire should just let Fanning suffer, but she’s a professional, so she orders everyone INTO THE LOBBY to get set up for emergency surgery. Meanwhile, she gets the low-down from Jamie, who needs her to distract Tryon as he runs off to warn Murtagh of the trap; Tryon can’t know Jamie’s gone.
Jamie uses George and Martha Washington as a sort of Colonial Lyft to get to Fergus and Marsali’s (they had a boy, BTW), and has Fergus find Murtagh while Jamie tries to slip back into the theater unnoticed. Don’t worry guys, it all works out! Although, it’s a little unsettling that Tryon knows exactly who Murtagh is. Keep an eye on our guy, Jamie!
And sure, saving Murtagh is exciting and all, but the most exhilarating part of the entire excursion to the theater is Claire, back in her element, crushing some impromptu surgery. Before you know it, she’s three knuckles deep in that dude’s abdomen and not even breaking a sweat. Governor Tryon is impressed, Fanning’s dummy doctors are impressed, we’re all impressed. You also must remember that while Claire is successfully performing surgery under less-than-desirable circumstances, she is also successfully saving her husband’s ass by distracting Tryon. She manages both tense tasks with a cool composure. Never forget that Claire’s the true hero of this show. If only the entire episode had just been Claire, Jamie, and George Washington”
Episode 9. The reunion. Claire is bowle4 over by her badass daughter travliing back through time to warn her mom about the fire. Claire , badass Claire, says nonchalently: we’ll just go have a holiday every year on that day.
Vulture recap again:
“Brianna is pregnant and Claire figures it out. After a hilarious fight about why Brianna didn’t pack condoms for her trip to the 1700s (moms are moms no matter the century), Bree confesses that it might not be Roger’s baby, and the truth (without naming Bonnet) comes spilling out. This is definitely Sam Heughan’s episode, but can we give it up for how incredible Caitriona Balfe is in this scene as Claire processes a whole slew of emotions at once? “
Episode 10 No much badassery, to be sure . Here’s Vulutre again to remind us:
“As important as that Jamie-Bree conversation is, and as nice as their shared moment commenting on how at peace Claire seems in the wilderness is, the parent-child moments in this episode that moved me the most belonged to Claire and Bree. The ladies talking about what they missed back in their time — cheeseburgers, Led Zeppelin, and toilets that flush, to name a few things — was a rare lighter scene on Outlander, and brought me so much joy! Claire compassionately and tactfully discussing abortion as an option for Bree was a great reminder of both how Claire is a woman ahead of her time literally and figuratively and of the strength of this mother-daughter relationship. It’s all pretty great.
and Badass Claire takes the side of her daughter against the man she loves, like a real mom! And rides into the wilderness to find and rescue roger from that seriously badass tribe, the Mohawk, just a 700 mile ride away in upper NY state. Badass?
Episode 11 Vulture again; my memory’s not what it was
Regardless of their scant airtime (in this episode) , Jamie and Claire get the best scene of the episode — maybe the best of the season.Things between Claire and Jamie are still very icy since separating from Bree, and no amount of ignoring it to focus on Claire’s fabulous headband will change that. Even Ian is begging Mom and Dad to make up. Finally, Claire gets to a point where she just can’t watch Jamie in so much pain over what he’s done to Brianna. She (Claire) he goes to him in his tent one night and explains that she’s not mad at him — she’s mad at the world. She explains that after Frank died, she and Brianna shared secrets and they belonged to them — so she’s sorry she didn’t tell Jamie about Bonnet as soon as she found out, and she blames herself for this entire mess. She explains that their marriage is different now because they’re parents. Listen, you guys, two people talking about the difficulties of balancing being a parent with being in a marriage is typically a snoozefest, but Balfe and Heughan are just so freaking good together (what’s new, I know) and imbue such vulnerability and honesty in this moment (I’m still sobbing over Jamie admitting that he’s worried both Bree and Claire think Frank was the better man), that I’ll be thinking about this scene for days. Sure, after Claire assures Jamie that Bree didn’t mean what she said and knows that Jamie for sure didn’t mean what he said and they both say “I’m sorry” and they both wipe away tears from their gorgeous faces, they have sex in that tent
Episode 12 OMG this episode didn’t feature Claire. Shock, horror
Episode 13 Badass Claire and her husband try to rescue Roger from the Mohawks. it all goes wrong. There’s a fight. Badass Claire is wearing the stone from the future! How badass do you have to be as a woman to go, outnumbered, under armed, into the wilderness, to rescue your daughter’s husband from a people whose track record is um.er...(how can one put this in non-judgemental terms?)..to use extreme methods when putting people to death.
So there you have it: ‘not badass’ in Season 4? In Season 4 as an afterthought? Soap opera equipment ? She had ‘nothing’ in Season 4? I’ve gone on about how Cait-Haters have misused pictures of Claire holding her arms (which she does in EVERY season) as proof she is unhappy. Well, lots of unhappy things happen in Season 4, to Claire, to her friends, to her daughter. It would have been odd if she’s looked happy the whole time, wouldn’t it. I know I’d have been terrified, most of the time, in her position. Here’s some pix of Claire looking sad in Season 4.

The end of my empire
Summary: Dean Winchester, notorious mobster, lady killer – the man holding your life in his hands.
A/N: I had a request for a stripper!reader fic with Dean so here we go with a mini-series to this request.
Pairing: Mobster!Reader x Stripper!Reader
Characters: Sam Winchester, Benny LaFitte, Charlie Bradbury, Bobby Singer, Cole Trenton, OFC’S
Warnings: angst, arguments, sad reader, Benny being a good bro, scared reader, hurt & comfort, mentions if injuries/knee pain, violence
A/N: Y/M/N = your mother’s name; Y/F/N = your father’s name
Explosive - Masterlist
“What else can we do to ease her pain? I had hoped that after she got over Nick that Y/N has a chance to become happy. Sadly, the ballet company didn’t give her a chance and now her career is completely ruined.” Your mother sniffles showing Bobby the result of your examination.
“Looks bad, Y/M/N. According to Alex, the damage is irreversible. The swelling and inflammation didn’t help, though. I should’ve ripped that boy a new one.” Bobby grumbles, remembering your shaking form when he arrived at your mothers’ shop.
“That man, she’s in love with him. We can help her with money, her knee, and everything else but healing her heart again is an impossible task.”
Your father holds back a sob when he looks at the picture of you in your tutu and ballet shoes. The picture he keeps in his wallet since you are five years old.
“She was so talented, and that bastard ruined everything.”
“We both know that Y/F/N, but what can I do? Nick lied and we could only arrest him for drunk driving. Y/N made the mistake to admit she urged her idjit of a boyfriend on to drive faster.” While your mother sighs, your father balls his hands into fists.
“I will kill that man if he ever gets close to my munchkin again. He has no right to come here and fake he wants to apologize for treating my girl like …” Crossing his arms over his chest your father’s features darken. “I will not repeat that word.”
“Dean Winchester is a dangerous man. He has clubs, money and according to the feds – he’s involved in a lot of more than shady deals.” Bobby opens a folder to show your father the information he got from Cole Trenton.
“I am not afraid of a bastard. At my best times, I ran three of those guys over. I will not cower for such a pathetic little shit.” Panting your father jumps up and your mother admires the gang tattoo at his right arm.
“Darling.” Your mother gently pats your fathers’ arm when she steps closer to him.
Even after being married for over 25 years, her heart flutters when her husband gets mad. It reminds her of his ‘wild times’. “It sounds like Dean Winchester is a mobster, not just a wild guy with a bike.”
“We all know Y/F/N, I and Rufus weren’t only youngsters with a bike, Y/M/N. Back then we did a lot of illegal stuff, you know that but…” Closing the manila folder Bobby sighs. “That agent, he said Dean is dangerous, even threaten to kill Y/N but…”
“But…?” Rage in his eyes your father glares at Bobby. “Why didn’t you arrest that monster?”
“Cole Trenton gives me bad vibes. The way he talked about that Winchester guy, the way he reacted when I told him about Y/N and that Dean came here to find her made my stomach churn. I do not trust that guy.”
Bobby finally gets up to place one hand onto your fathers’ shoulder. “I promise that the Winchester boy will not get the chance to hurt your girl, but we shouldn’t involve that fed.”
“I trust your guts, Bobby. If you are telling me the FBI guy is fishy, I believe you…”
“Why can’t you just leave me alone?” Robbing toward the edge of the bed you try to get up, but Dean holds you back. He can see you are in pain again and leaves the bed to pick you up. “Let me down I want to go to the bathroom.”
“I can help you with the toilette, Sweetheart.” Face deadpan, lips pressed into a thin line you glare at Dean. “No problem.”
“I want to have a warm bath to help my knee relax. I can do it alone…” Grumbling you rub your hand over your knee. “Mom helps me when she’s around.”
“I can do this too, Baby Girl. Let me help you, please. I’ll do anything to make you feel better.”
“Let me go and never come back – this makes me feel better.” Your eyes fill with tears, but you refuse to let them out. “You damaged me enough. Just look for another girl you can play with.”
“I never played with you, Y/N. Yes, I was an idiot, a monster, and the man hurting you but please believe me it was only as I never could trust anyone but my brother and myself. All women, friends, and even family turned me down for a few bugs.”
“My mom will strike you down with a pan again. Dad will run you over with his bike and Uncle Bobby will arrest your ass.” Arms crossed over your chest; lips pursed you groan as Dean carries you into the bathroom.
“I thought about what you said, Y/N. Maybe it’s time that I give up something important. I could give up my clubs and give them to Sammy. He was better at running the business from the beginning.”
Silent you do not react to Dean’s words. All you do is to grasp for the washbasin when Dean carefully places you onto your feet. “Wait, I’ll run the bath and help you undress…”
“Forget it! I will not let you help me undress.” Your eyes narrow and you slap his cheek harshly, only to lose balance and end up in his arms again.
“I hate you! You’re like Nick. He promised to love me, promised he would never even look at another girl. But then I got hurt and he replaced me with another girl in a blink of an eye.“
“Baby Girl, I did not replace you. All those months I was sulking in my room and slept on your side of the bed. I desperately tried to forget you but…” Pressing his lips to your hair Dean sighs. “I can’t forget my fairy. If you give me the chance, I’ll prove I can be the man you want, the one you deserve.”
“Dean, just let me go. I can never believe anything you say as when I needed you the most, you weren’t there. Even worse, you caused more pain than anyone before.” When you hear the front door, you panic. “My parents are back; you need to go.”
“I’ll not leave you alone. Whatever your mom wants to do with the pan to me, I’ll bear it.” Dean states but you push against his chest. “I’ll stay in town no matter what you say.”
“Fine. We can talk tomorrow but now go!”
“I’ll be there, Sweetheart…” Dean lifts you easily to help you sit on the edge of the bathtub. “Shame you didn’t let me undress you…”
You do not smile or look at Dean, but you toss a bottle of shampoo at him and he smirks. “Love you too, Y/N…”
“Hello, Ms. Y/L/N.” Your blood freezes and your hands start to shake when Cole Trenton out of all people stands in your mother’s café.
“I’d like to continue our conversation from a few months ago. We still haven’t found Mr. Winchester's latest victim but it’s only a matter of time.”
“Get out of my mom’s café and this town! You ruined everything. Dean he…he got mad and hurt me. You ruined my relationship; my knee and my job now leave town, or I’ll call my Uncle Bobby!”
Limping toward your purse you want to call Bobby, but Cole grasps your arm harshly and your mother drops a plate with pie.
“Let my daughter go! Do you have no manners? Grabbing a girl who can barely stand on her injured leg. You…you monster!”
Ready to attack Cole your mother grabs her rolling pin, ready to split his head but the door swings open and Dean, followed by Benny and Sam steps into the café.
“I think,” Dean dips his head, glaring at Cole. “The friendly lady said you shall let go of her daughter. If you are here to arrest me, do so. If not shove your ass out of the store and keep your hands off my girl.” While Benny pats his gun, Dean and Sam step closer to Cole.
“Last warning, Mr. Trenton, or shall I call you fake agent?” Charlie peeks out from behind Sam, waving at you. “Hi! I am Charlie.”
“Fake agent?” Gaping at Cole who still won’t let go of your arm you sniffle. “Let go of me!”
“What the…!” Bobby’s eyes dart from Benny who’s ready to shoot Cole to the agent holding your arm in a painfully tight grip to Dean who looks like he wants to rip Cole’s throat out with his teeth.
“I am Sheriff Singer, and this is my town. Let go of miss Y/L/N or I need to arrest you.”
“I am a federal agent.” Bobby huffs, recognizing Cole’s face.
“I don’t care if you are the Queen of England. This is my town, the girl you are hurting is my goddaughter and I am sure the gentlemen next to me would gladly help me get you out of this nice establishment.”
Reluctantly Cole let go of you and Dean lunges forward to slam his fist into the grinning agent's face.
“That wasn’t smart, Winchester.” Dean doesn’t care Cole snickers, nor does he flinch when the agent gets his handcuffs out. “I will arrest you for…”
Dean carefully picks you up to bring you away from Cole who tries to end his speech but Sam and Benny step closer, along with a pissed Bobby Singer.
“I think you did not understand me. I’ll explain it to you as if you are a toddler.” Bobby checks on you in Dean’s arms, a soft smile on his lips as you hide your face in Dean’s chest.
“This is my town. This is my territory and you dared to lay a finger on my goddaughter. According to your boss, the case against Mr. Winchester is one big lie.
You and your lovely fake witness Lisa Braeden tried to create a case against him and threatened my goddaughter. I saw the video you vulture dared to touch her during an interrogation. I talked your boss and he said I can arrest you if you are stupid enough to get close to Y/N.”
While Cole follows Bobby outside, a dark look on his face when his boss exits his car your mother tightens the grip on her rolling pin as she steps toward Dean who refuses to let you down.
“I’ll give you ten seconds to let go of my daughter or I swear I’ll rip you a new one.” Benny snickers while Sam takes a step backward.
“One…”
“Ma’am, I can assure you I will not hurt Y/N.” Dean gasps when your mother pokes the end of the rolling pin into his bicep.
“Two…”
“Please, I apologized and will do anything Y/N wants as I love her. I…I made a terrible mistake but I called my brother and friends to show my Sweethart, that I want to change and give up my old life.” Your mother gives Dean a disapproving grunt before she pokes him again.
“Three…”
“Dude, maybe you should let Y/N down and talk to her later. That asshole got arrested and we will stay in town for a few days…” Sam tries but Dean presses you closer to his chest.
“No…” He’s eyeing the rolling pin warily, gulps even when your mother swings it.
“Four…”
“Mrs. Y/L/N, I love your daughter. Maybe I do not deserve forgiveness, no that’s sure but I’ll do anything to get her back. You can hit me hard with that thing but I’ll not let her go.” Dean presses a soft kiss to your hair and you stir in his arms.
“Five…” Blinking Dean carefully places you onto a chair, covering your shaking form with his jacket before he nods at your mother.
“Do it!”
“I am not joking you…you bad guy.” Poking the rolling pin into Dean’s chest your mother keeps an eye on the mobster while she tries to check on your arm. “I should have hit that bastard.”
“I am sure he will get what he deserves, ma’am. Do you mind if we order some pie?” Benny rumbles.
“Pie...” Dean looks at the pie, licking his lips while your mother keeps him at arm's length with the rolling pin.
“Sammy?” Looking for help, advice, or anything to keep your mother from killing him Dean glances at his brother.
“Sorry, Dean but this is your problem.”
Benny smirks while he walks toward the counter to order pie for Sam, Charlie, and himself. “I want pie too.” Whining Dean looks at the pie. “I love me some pie.”
“Rules, Winchester.” Your mother looks at you with worried eyes when you finally speak. “I want to live here. I will not leave and if you want me, you’ll have to stay here with me.”
“Will I get free pie?” Angrily poking Dean’s chest your mother shakes her head. “You’ll have to pay for it, idjit.”
“What else do you want? Maybe I can help you with fulfilling your dream…” Dean looks at your knee and you need to stifle a sob.
“It’s ruined, always was. There is no dream left…but…”
“But…?” Dean kneels to grasp for your hand. “What dream? Tell me and I’ll help you…”
“I want to save the dance school in town. I learned to dance with Mrs. Carson and always imagined becoming like her. A retired ballerina teaching young girls and boys how to dance.”
Looking at your knee you sniffle silently. “Guess I am not allowed to call me a ballerina…not even a retired one.”
“I’ll buy it for you. We can do together. I am the big bad guy making sure that no one messes with our school and you can teach the girls.” Dean exclaims while you downcast your eyes.
“It’s just a stupid dream, nothing worth trying.”
“No…no. It’s your dream, Sweetheart. I’ll buy the school and every fucking pie in this café. We will make it…please…” He’s picking you up in bridal style, a smug grin on his face. “Mrs. Y/L/N I’ll kidnap your daughter to have a look at the school.”
“It’s a rotten building and no one dances…” Your mother stops talking when you look up at Dean who tells you he’ll make sure the dance school will be yours.
“Can you tell me where to rent an apartment? I’d like to not sleep at that motel or my car again.” Hopefully looking at your mother Dean gives her his most charming smile.
“We don’t have free apartments. Only this huge house at the end of the street, but that’s for sale and expensive.” Humming you smile.
“I liked to sneak through the fence and have a look at the house. I was huge and they had a backyard with roses and other flowers. It was nice…”
“You liked it?” Dean looks at your happy face and he knows; you love the memory of the house.
“My friends and I imagined what it looks like inside and sneak in one day. There was this fireplace as high as the whole living room and shelves full of books. It looked like in a fairytale.”
“I’ll buy it for you, and we can restore it…” Not accepting any argument Dean looks at the cherry pie. “We will eat the pie and we’ll look at the houses later. Your mom can come with us to witness that I’ll not hurt you.”
“We shouldn’t, Dean. You should go back to your life.”
“No. My life is empty and loveless without you, Sweetheart. If I have to live in this small town, run a dance school and buy a house straight out of a fairytale, so be it. Dean Winchester will retire…which means…”
“Which means?” Your mother cocks a brow, still the rolling pin in her hands.
“This is the end of my empire…”

Things That Bother Me About Gossip Girl
Chuck Bass’ hair in the first season
Jenny Humphrey repeatedly trying to stir up trouble & be a bitch
Serena’s nappy hair. Has she never heard of a hairbrush?!
Nate’s lip
Rufus Humphrey’s singing/song
Serena constantly pushing her lips out and whispering when she talks
Serena and her daddy issues. Mainly her being so quick to pin Rufus as the bad guy.
Little J losing her virginity to Chuck and then pinning him as a bag guy.
Jenny’s disgusting goth makeup.
Eric’s blonde striped hair
Lily running to her ex husband for help instead of just going to ANY OTHER DOCTOR ON THE PLANET
The poor acting during Dorota’s labor
Serena’s disgusting hair. It’s so bad I had to say it twice
Serena repeatedly being handed EVERYTHING. She gets trashed, fucks her best friends boyfriend, leaves a man to overdose and is still offered everything she doesn’t deserve.
Eleanor stealing a teenagers work.
Harriet The Spy (aka Georgina) being a villain. My childhood is ruined
Those alleyway assholes shooting Chuck. This is like The O.C. all over again. My heart can’t handle it.
Speaking of Chuck... Chuck constantly reminding people he’s “Chuck Bass”
These high school teenagers dating adults & nobody being bothered by that. But, as soon as Dan has interest in a teacher then we’re shook?
Elizabeth never coming back to tell Chuck she actually IS his mother
Come to think of it — the whole flip flopping of Chuck’s mom was frustrating
Chuck’s uncle Jack being so willing to hand over the hotel all of a sudden was pretty weird too
Rufus not getting Jenny some serious help
Agnes drugging Jenny!!! That girl needs to get locked away
The way that all of these children talk to their parents. They’re so disrespectful. Which is typical for teenagers. But, these parents just enable the behavior.
The on again off again relationship of Dan & Georgina
Vanessa. enough said.
Dan not INSTANTLY getting a paternity test
Prince Louis. again, enough said.
Blair & Chuck not seeing that they’re always going to come back to each other.
Lily being so easily swooned by anyone who is NOT her husband.
Georgina outing Eric. Soooo fucked up
Never hearing from Jenny & Dan’s mom again after her few appearances.
Chuck inheriting a business at 18. TF?!?!
Rufus’ tattoos
Chuck going from suits & ties — to being shot — to villager WORKING in Paris!!
Serena thinking she can take over as Queen. B may not have always been Queen, but, the title suits her so much better than S.
Juliet’s scheming ass. ughh!
The whole storyline of Georgina, Milo, & Russian murderers.
Eva being waaaaayyyy too good for any of these Upper East Side snobs and not running for the hills after Blair was a complete bitch to her. GIRL— RUNNNN!!!
Dan being so obviously more attracted to Vanessa during his threesome with her & Olivia. HOW DUMB COULD YOU BE?!?!
Dan being so cold about Georgina taking Milo. The way he spoke about Milo during his “Intervention of Emotions” was foul
The Humphrey Loft. It seems not secure AT ALL!! There’s a gap between the two front doors & I just feel like it’s probably the easiest place to break into.
I know I’ve already mentioned Serena’s hair but, I don’t understand how she can go to all of these elite events with these unkept hairstyles. In Season 4 Episode 4, the one time she straightened and brushed her hair, she slapped on some disgusting braid on the front of her head.
I know I’ve also already mentioned Vanessa but, can we talk about how much older she looks than everybody else her age?!
Blair wearing shorts to an NYU party. I almost died.
Blair’s knitted beret she wore in Paris. Soooo not “Blair Waldorf”.
Hilary Duff’s acting. It’s just not good. I love Hilary but, her acting hasn’t progressed since Lizzie Mcguire.
WHAT KIND OF PRISON IS BEN IN THAT HE HAS ACCESS TO LITERALLY EVERYTHING!! Is it even prison at this point?! I know people are able to sneak things but CMON!!!!
Gossip Girl getting sloppy with the posts
Going seasons and seasons and seasons of not a single person ever attempting to find out who Gossip Girl even is. That’d be the first thing I did if somebody was posting about me. Is this not borderline stalking?!
Rufus’ tan.
Literally EVERYTIME Jenny returned back to the show. Her character was one of the worst ones.
There’s a scene in Season 4 Episode 11, where you see a framed picture of Lily WEARING THE SAME EXACT THING SHES WEARING IN THE SCENE! The lack of creativity was weak with this one.
Blair gets a little cheesy towards the end of season 4
Serena looooves to play the blame game. Never taking FULL responsibility for anything. Always looking for someone to take the heat off her
Blair repeatedly getting into physical altercations with people at events. For a woman who seems to pride herself in how much better she is than everyone else she tends to act very classless at social gatherings.
Charlie/Ivy inheriting ANYTHING from Cece
There ever being a storyline of Blair being pregnant only for us to know that she wasn’t meant to be with Louis. Meaning that the baby storyline would have to end. I wish they wouldn’t have had it at all. It was weak the whole way through.
Blair arriving at the airport in her Vera Wang gown and tiara not expecting to get attention from it all.
People instantly knowing who that she’s the Princess of Monaco. Not to sound ignorant or anything but, where tf is Monaco?!
Bart Bass coming back from the grave. WTF?! Not believable.
Dan growing his hair out to where he looked like he was wearing a wig he found in a back alley dumpster
Dorota’s acting. Toward the end of the show they gave her character more lines and she appeared in more and more scenes. But, her acting/her lines were incredibly cheesy.
Serena & Dan getting married in a living room with everybody just chillin on couches. I’m all for small. I’m all for simplicity. But, this was too redneck.

Party of Four {4} (b.h)
A/N: This is just another filler. After this I promise things will get back on the baby track. Also it’s kinda messy. I’m sorry. :) As always. Like reblog comment.
Check out other parts to the story on my page I’m sorry for the inaccuracy of things in this.
Pairing: Ben x Reader Summary: Summer Festival Tour Warnings: none? Words: 861
May 2016
“Hey kid. I saw some those pictures you took for that magazine. We’re doing a festival tour this summer. I talked to some people. And we want you to document it and stuff. If you want. You’re really talented kid.Talk to ya soon, hopefully. Also call Rufus. He misses you.”
Though it had been weeks since you had gotten the message from your godfather, you played the message over and over in your mind. It was insane. You were going to be taking pictures for most famous bands in the world.
It took Ben a few days of contemplation to get on board with you traveling around the continent for a month with a famous rock group. He was mostly afraid something awful would happen and you might not return. But after many reassurances, he realized that this was going to make you happy. Whose knows. Maybe the change of scenery would be good for you.
“Remind me again how exactly you know them?” Ben asked for the millionth time. Even though he already knew the answer it still astounded him.
“Benny you already know this.” You shook your head at the man. You needed to finish up packing for the trip. He was making it harder, by distracting you.
“Tell me again.” He laid across the bed watching you do your thing. Underneath all of his fears he was a little bit jealous of you. He was jealous that you grew up knowing all these amazing and talented people, and that you acted like it was no big deal.
“Well. My father was a big musician in the late eighties early nineties. They ran into each other now and then. They just became good friends I guess.” You shrugged rolling up some band tee so that it would fit into your pack easier. “They had a hard time trying naming my godparents. So my dad asked Roger. There you have it.”

It was your twenty fifth birthday, and the concert for the night just happened to be in Newport. Though you told them you were more than capable of performing your duties that night, they insisted that you have this one concert off. ‘Enjoy the show. Consider it a little birthday present.’
You were excited to be able to actually watch the show for once, instead of photographing it. What would make this night even more better was if your husband was there celebrating with you. But he was a world away working.
You missed Ben terribly. You wished that he would be standing next to you while you bopped your head to the music. That’s when you felt a tap on your shoulder. You shrugged it off thinking it was just some guy coming to try and get in your pants. You felt it again, this time it was accompanied by someone whispering your name. The voice was familiar, it was warm and inviting. Something you instantly fell in love with.
“Ben!” You whipped around as fast as you could. He was there. “What are you doing here?!” the smiled on your face spreading with every second. Your heart dropping with happiness.
“I couldn’t miss my girl’s birthday.” Ben wrapped his arms around you pulling you in close. Enjoying the moment.
“How long are you here for?” You asked after a series of songs had played. Currently the band was performing the hit Under Pressure. Your hand resting on his cheek, you begin tracing small patterns on it.
“Not long. I leave tomorrow night.”
You sighed. That wasn’t long at all. You wanted to spend as much as you could with the man you loved. The current song was coming to a close and the next was being announced. The guitar strumming began followed by the drums and other instruments, Crazy Little Thing Called Love.
“You want to get out of here? Go back to my room?” You hinted at a little more. You wanted this birthday something you could remember. Plus the two of you would have plenty of chances to hear Queen playing in the following year, even though you didn’t know it yet.

“Come on love. Come on.” Ben murmured through his phone. He has some exciting news to share with you. Little did he know you had been trying to contact him all morning with something that would be life changing.
“Ben?” You mumbled lifting your head from the cool bathroom floor. You had just throw up everything and then some.
“Are you alright Y/N? You don’t sound so good.” He voiced his concern.
“Yeah. No.” You sit up on the edge of the bath. You put your head in the palm of your hand as your head throbbed. “That’s what I’ve ringing about. I’m pregnant.”
“What?”
“I’m pregnant, love.” You finally let a smile dance across your lips. You could tell Ben was smiling as well with the little chuckle he gave over the phone.
“I’ve got some news as well.” Ben lightly laughed again. “I got the part in the movie about the band.”
Things seemed like they were looking up fo the two of you.
