My opinion on Charles and Crystal is that they ARE cute together and they DO like each other but they can’t possibly last, both for reasons they know and reasons they don’t. It’s sincerely sweet and tragic.
Crystal is alive, and being with Crystal makes Charles feel more alive. She’s fit and she has a bite to her and she’s the first new friend he’s had since he died. Crystal is overlooked by her parents (not that she knows it at first) and haunted by David, and Charles sees her and stands up for her and likes her as she is. They’ve got a really lovely thing.
But it’s doomed, you know? It’s doomed to end. Crystal will grow up, and Charles won’t. Further, Charles’s closest person in his life is Edwin, and will continue to be Edwin. It’s not that he can’t love anyone else… but the role of (after)life partner for Charles is already spoken for.
Anyway. I say this has someone who thinks Charles and Edwin are the ultimate couple of Dead Boy Detectives. Someone who thinks Charles is bisexual and will realize someday that he has romantic feelings for Edwin, too. Still… I would never want to minimize what Charles and Crystal have. It’s something. Something short and vibrant and bittersweet.

see I need ghost clothes to have properties more or less like regular clothes because wearing someone else’s jacket or shirt is one of the most important expressions of affection in existence and yes basically what I’m saying is i wanna see charles give edwin his jacket for one reason or another and see edwin get all flustered and giddy about it
#the staple of all my high school romances (all like. two or three of them)#but on a more domestic level too….i love the trope of one partner wearing the other’s ill-fitting t-shirt around the house because#it’s comfy and they like feeling embraced in a way by the perosn they love#grahhhhhh I’m weak and cliche i know i know#but yeah the jacket thing…….im imagining like. something happens that leaves edwin hurt and exhausted on the ground and charles rushes over#to check if he’s okay and to help him up. and in doing so he drapes his signature jacket over edwin’s shoulders#and yeah ghosts can’t get cold. but edwin doesn’t say that out loud because he’s too busy being all 💕😳💕. similarly he forgets about being#hurt and can only think about how charles’ jacket feels on him and how everyone can see this mark of affection on him and. and.#yeah#i remember one of my favorite things about (stealing) wearing my ex crushes and boyfriend’s jackets was feeling like. everyone can see#that I’m his. and he likes me. and that we’re Something. I’m Special to him#which is so teenager of me but I’m gonna be honest i doubt anything’s changed and I’m almost 24#I just haven’t felt like that in a long time. man i miss that feeling#but yeah edwin. being as jealous as he is and as up front about people knowing that charles comes first and they’re ‘Best Friends’ and all#i imagine he’d be the type to be a bit (not negatively) possessive and to love that little assertion of. yes. look. I’m his favorite.#we have something special. he loves me. specifically.#same reason i think he’d ACT annoyed at getting hickeys he can’t totally hide but really would kind of love the feeling of being marked#like that. it’s Evidence. he likes everyone knowing charles is his and vice versa.#I think i broke myself#rambling#payneland#dead boy detectives

The gay boy being in love with his 'straight' best friend is such a trope and its subversion is not rejection, it's reciprocity and mutual queerness. Charles's response wasn't a rejection. It was awe and kindness and support. It was, "I don't know but you are my person and we have eternity to figure it out."
The Dead Boy Detectives is committing to a potential love story between Charles and Edwin in a way I've only read in queer books. The writing is treating the possibility of them with the same weight it is treating the possibility of Charles and Crystal.
Edwin is a main character, his potential romances dominated the narrative, and one of his love interests is another main character whose individual development and relationship with Edwin is beautifully fleshed out.
Do you know how rare that is? How special? It's all I've ever wanted to see happen with queerness in media. For the queer character and their romantic plotlines to have the same space to develop as their counterparts. For their love interests to have (any) extended character and relationship development beyond being rushed in and out of the narrative for fear of alienating a homophobic industry and viewership.
Thinking about how much Dead Boy Detectives doesn't closet Edwin's story, nor the possibility of him and Charles, how much it appears to be pointedly rejecting how queerness has been handled thus far on screen, fills my heart with hope.

i'm finally gonna do a dead boy detectives headcanon!! yay :D
but if you know anything about sanders sides, it's that logan/logic has these vocabulary cards of modern-day slang. stuff like "rizz", "fam", "lit", etc.
i think edwin would've also been given similar vocab cards once crystal entered the detective agency. sure, edwin's speech was fine, but it was outdated. crystal, like the gen z that she is, decided to make cards that would help edwin with his modern world slang.
charles saw this too and decided to make his own set of vocab cards of slang that he grew up with. charles' cards were less detailed and definitely rushed, but still. edwin already knew most of charles' slang just by being with him for 30 years, but he appreciates the thought.
i'm pretty sure you all know who's slang edwin adopted more. (yes, it's charles. much to crystal's chagrin.)
as a bonus, niko also made her own!! though, it wasn't on slang words to help edwin blend in more with the living. the cards mostly consisted of tips on modern dating and a bunch of other boy romance-related topics. edwin keeps those cards super close to him, like his notebook. it's really cute, actually.

Final Chapter. Sweet
“I am yours, in every sense of the word,” Edwin said in a rush against his lips, too eager to kiss him again to slow his speech down. “And it isn’t conditional, Charles. I love you completely. I always will.” Charles' eyes turned glassy and there was a bit of embarrassment in it. Edwin kissed his cheek, his jaw, his neck, holding Charles tighter. “I want to show you,” he sighed, kissing below his ear. Charles whined and Edwin could feel him trembling under his hands. “Please, let me show you.”
Read the final chapter on AO3 or start from the beginning

my thoughts on dead boy detectives season 1
- the season should have had more episodes we should’ve had more time for characters to develop connections and do a deeper dive into the intimacies of charles and edwin’s friendship
- the special effects were slay at times the pain wraith and the angler fish very very cool
- hate hate hate the romance between crystal and charles actually the biggest problem I have with the show even more than the occasionally shit dialogue (which at least did get better as the season progressed)
- devastated that we won’t have cat king in season 2 he deserves to be forever hope he comes back somehow which his relationship with edwin was again tied up with a perfect bow but ig they just wanted to end his arc here I just think he’s an interesting enough character that they could’ve kept him and his toying of edwin going longer
- the genre of this show was baffling and sometimes too harsh of a shift between scenes
- very funny tho aces on the comedy front they were funny guys
- niko and edwin were SoulMates they were the definition of mlm and wlw solidarity and they were the most important relationship of all
- really though niko and crystal would be a thing big bummer on that side
- still wished edwin hadn’t already confessed his feelings so quickly I want more secret pining!! the not wanting to say anything in fear of ruining your friendship!! like yes it was a very healthy and endearing scene and I love that at the end of the day they’re still best friends but wish that had gone different
- in a perfect world they would’ve gotten at least 15 episodes to flesh out the world and story at a slower pace and season 1 could be about edwin discovering he’s into boys while season 2 can then be about his Specific boy things just felt too rushed at times (and I know part of that is the limitations placed on the showrunners very limited episodes and you have to conclude your season satisfyingly enough due to the high possibility that you don’t get another season so I Get making the ending like that and having all these boxes checked off so if there is a season 2 you can make new boxes to check but some boxes need to be left unchecked!!! at least for a bit everything just felt too perfectly tied up with a bow I would’ve liked to see less of a resolution in regards to the afterlife catching them don’t love that after 30 years they only now get the Perfect solution to their existence)
- want more magic from edwin!!! let him be cool and powerful and scary!!!
- overall though I did have a very good time and all the aspects I didnt like make sense in a way I just don’t like em
- still thinking about those clowns in the first episode what the fuck was that about

Reading update
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just Like That by Cole McCade - 2/5 stars
So I started reading this age gap romance about two professors at a boys boarding school expecting it to be different than the last Cole McCade romance I read. It...wasn't. The emotions are turned up to 11 all the time, from the very first page, and that means there's nowhere emotionally to go. It also felt rushed and like the characters didn't really have room to breathe. So...I might retract what I said about the first Cole McCade novel I read needing to be shorter, because this one was shorter, and it didn't work.
Scattered Showers by Rainbow Rowell - 4/5 stars
Bought this for the SnowBaz story, ended up reading the whole thing and quite enjoying it. The SnowBaz story was definitely still the best though.
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo - 4/5 stars
In my last reading update I said I wasn't going to read any my Leigh Bardugo books, totally forgetting this one was sitting very near the top of my TBR pile. I liked it a lot, but I have been informed that Hellbent involves a glowing, fully erect demon penis in multiple scenes (and not even for demon sex) soooo yeah. I think I'll give it a miss.
The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting by KJ Charles - 4.75/5 stars
Drama! by AJ Truman - 4.25/5 stars
Bloodline by Jordan L Hawk - 4.75/5 stars
Wanted, A Gentleman by KJ Charles - 5/5 stars
Oh I loved this one so much. I love when KJ Charles writes books with a twist because I never see them coming. And it's not like the clues aren't there. This is a super quick read but so good. I definitely could have read a full length novel about Martin and Theo.
The Klockwerk Kraken by Aidee Ladnier - 5/5 stars
You look at this book and you think, tentacle porn. And yeah, there's some sex with tentacles. But??? This book??? It kind of wrecked me. It's two connected novellas about trauma, healing, family, memory, love...really really good. Highly recommended.
Pack of Lies by Charlie Adhara - 5/5 stars
And then I read a werewolf book and loved it! Not that I expected to hate this or anything, but I definitely went into it feeling a bit iffy, because werewolves are really not my thing. This book is romantic suspense and really good, and I loved Julien and Eli so much. This is a spinoff of Adhara's other werewolf series, which I want to read, but it's only available as an ebook, and I don't do ebooks.
Seven Tears at High Tide by CB Lee - 4/5 stars
Cute little YA mermaid book. Mermaids also aren't my thing so I liked this more than I thought I would. Much better than Jason June's Out of the Blue, imo.
A Restless Truth by Freya Marske - 4.75/5 stars
Again, my toxic trait is I don't really enjoy reading books about women or f/f romances. But not surprisingly at all, this book was really good. Though, you know. I inhaled all references to Robin and Edwin (of which there were many) and was sorta/kinda more invested in the hints of romance between Hawthorn and Alan. Obvs excited for the third book.
The Rules and Regulations for Mediating Myths and Magic by FT Lukens - 3.5/5 stars
Just Like This by Cole McCade - DNF
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. I put this one down before I got through chapter 2.
Never Ever Getting Back Together by Sophie Gonzales - 5/5 stars
I tore through this book in a single day. It was SO funny and sweet. It's considered YA but quite honestly I'd call it New Adult. Or if you don't like New Adult, straight Adult. Sophie Gonzales is the author of one of my top reads of last year, but of course, since this is an f/f romance, I was wary. But ugh, so good. Highly recommend this one.
The Luminaries by Susan Dennard - 5/5 stars
Apparently the idea for this came from the author posting polls on twitter for what would happen next, which is...unspeakably lame, honestly. But the book that came out of it is great. Loved the world, loved Winnie and her family (especially her brother and his boyfriend).
Beguiled by Joanna Chambers - 5/5 stars
Loved the first one, loved this one more.
This Census-Taker by China Miéville - 3.25/5 stars
What was this even about? Pretty sure Miéville was high on peyote when he wrote this.
Nick and Charlie by Alice Oseman - 3.75/5 stars
Picked this up because it was 20% off at Target and was actually pleasantly surprised by how much more adult it is than the series. Then of course started watching season 2 of the series and found it to be as sanitized as season 1.
The Henchman of Zenda - KJ Charles - 3.5/5 stars
He Bears the Cape of Stars from Duck Prints Press - 4.5/5 stars
Glitterland by Alexis Hall - 3.75/5 stars
This is a re-release of one of a novel Hall wrote like a decade ago. It's not a romcom (which I knew going in), but I didn't expect it to be quite so rough. Similar in ways to Paris Daillencourt is About to Crumble, only that was funnier. The fact that he wrote out the Essex accent really grated, but I guess it kind of made sense. My bigger issue with this book was the absolutely shit editing. There were repeated paragraphs, formatting issues, and places where it seemed like there had to be something missing because it made no sense.
The new edition is annotated by Hall, which was pretty fun. Not a bad read, but it's not Boyfriend Material.
