I’ve been thinking so much about this specific scene from The Caddy (1953).

I couldn’t find an isolated clip, but the timestamp here is roughly 41:17 - 44:15. It’s the scene where Harvey (Jerry) sets up a little celebration for Joe (Dean) after he wins a golf tournament.

First, we see the sign on the door reading “Welcome Home Champ,” which Harvey has clearly handmade himself, giving the first hint of what he feels toward Joe. Joe questions, “I wonder who that’s for,” which could be interpreted a few different ways. Maybe nobody in his life has shown him this level of care and effort before, to the point that he is genuinely taken aback when he gets to the door. Maybe he doesn’t realize how important he is in Harvey’s life and doesn’t think what he’s doing is worthy of any recognition.

Next, he enters the room and we see Harvey. Again, in this scene Jerry is in the familiar trope of playing the “woman” in the relationship. Throughout their filmography and television appearances, Jerry’s characters often serve to reinforce Dean’s masculinity as he plays roles that can very easily be read as feminine and/or queer. In this instance, I am referring to queer as not only relating to gender and sexuality, but ways of existence which fall outside of conformity. The nature of their partnership, both in their act and in real life, is rather unconventional when we consider other male comedy duos of their era. The love and admiration they shared for one another (particularly Jerry to Dean) couldn’t be contained. We can think of other teams such as Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, and Hope & Crosby. In many cases, these men either couldn’t stand each other in real life or were strictly business partners. We can begin to understand how much of an anomaly the Martin & Lewis relationship was. Particularly in the case of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, their films have many scenes with queer implications and ambiguous subtext. However, it is always played more for a laugh and the sheer “shock value” at the very suggestion of homosexuality. I never find this to be the case with Dean and Jerry, as scenes of the same nature often feel more innocent or less derogatory.

Back to the film! When Joe enters the room he shares with Harvey, we see the depiction of a very domestic scene. Harvey is acting as the devoted housewife, dutifully preparing dinner for the two of them with a recipe he learned from Joe’s mother. A little while later, he also remarks “I got the wide noodles you like so well!” This suggests he has gotten to know Joe well enough and has paid enough attention to his preferences that he can invest time and effort into making this a special celebration for Joe. Furthermore, he is even wearing an apron, which can be read as another attribute of a housewife (think of the scene in Rebel Without a Cause when Jim Stark catches his father wearing an apron and performing domestic duties for his mother). Again, this reads as a scene between a husband and wife, and almost could have been plucked out of any 1950s sitcom.

Harvey also has a few gifts for Joe. The first one is a hat which belonged to Harvey’s father, who was a very important figure in his life. We can begin to think about the significance of Harvey gifting Joe such an intimate and personal gift. In the film, it is well established how Harvey reveres his father, and now he is sharing his memory with Joe. In this sequence, Harvey can hardly contain his excitement as Joe opens it and his anticipation is very clear. When Joe tries the hat on and realizes it is too big, Harvey is initially bashful and embarrassed, almost as if he is expecting to be ridiculed. However, Joe seemingly understands the emotional weight of a gift like this along with the significance it carries for Harvey (although he doesn’t let his emotions show, much like Dean himself). In that moment, it is not about gifting Joe a brand new hat that was tailored perfectly for him. If Harvey wanted to do that, he would have. Rather, gifting Joe his dad’s hat was about Harvey giving Joe a piece of himself. Similarly, the next gift Harvey has ready for Joe is a trophy that his father won at an important golf tournament, reflecting the same sentimentality of the hat.

Seemingly, Harvey has set up a party just for the two of them which is an intimate gesture (literally a candlelit dinner, lol). He remarks, “A man that’s under pressure should have things he likes!” This tells us that Harvey wants Joe to succeed and is carefully considering his health and well-being. Then, while discussing the end of the evening he has planned and the ice cream they will have for dessert, Harvey says “…and we’ll hit the sack.” Interestingly enough, there is only one bed visible in the room they share.

Once Harvey learns that Joe will be going out to a party with a woman rather than staying for the dinner he planned, he expresses hurt and concern. He pleads with Joe to stay before finally acquiescing and agreeing upon a curfew of 11 PM. While Harvey tries to mask his emotions in this situation, it is still very clear to the audience. As he straightens Joe’s tie, he attempts to downplay the effort he clearly put in to set up the dinner. At last, as Joe leaves, Harvey takes the sign off the door and blows out the candle on the table, seemingly losing all interest in what he had prepared for the evening once Joe was no longer there to share it with him. I think this scene also speaks to Jerry’s incredible talent for more serious, emotional scenes.

Well, this turned out a lot longer than I expected. As I said, I have not been able to stop thinking about this scene for a few days and keep rewatching it. Maybe I read way too much into this scene that’s barely three minutes long, maybe it’s not that serious at all, but I had a lot of fun analyzing it and putting some of my thoughts into words. While I’m an undergraduate student, I certainly don’t consider myself a writer so I apologize if this is a bit jumbled. Thank you for reading :)

Platonic/family relationships are always a favorite. Angst: In limited doses. Over the last year or so I’ve found I have become a lot more sensitive to it. I don’t mind it to a degree, but as of this moment I try not to dive into heavy content that involves d/eath or other triggering topics. Note some requests have more notes/links because I have requested them before. I have received lovely gifts in the past for some of my repeated fandoms (in some cases for similar prompts), but with small fandoms like these I'm always happy to read more takes on the same prompts. I prefer third person to first person fic, though focusing on the POV of one or more characters is fine. I love both fluff and angst, though I want my angst to have a happy or at least hopeful ending. I also enjoy smutfic (more on that later). Below are some tropes/moments I enjoy:

I was not expecting to be as into this ship as I am, but their characters are fascinating and the chemistry is just on another level! This fandom/ship lends itself naturally to angst more than my other requests & I am very down for fic of them doing lots of hand wringing over their forbidden desires and/or where they go from the s3 finale, etc - but I am also a fluff fan so if you’d rather write them enjoying the happiness of their stolen moments together I would love that too. Despite the angst they can also be really playful together and that kind of push and pull between the best & worst of themselves is part of what makes them so compelling to me.

Missing scenes, future fic and canon divergence are all good here - with the note that I don't want a future fic set so far in the future it's set when Cesare is dead. For this fandom, I am also open to setting changes AUs as long as it translates some of the complicated family dynamics to a new setting. I’d rather not have a mundane AU like them working at a coffee shop or another cutesy setting that doesn't really seem to fit them - but also it doesn’t need to be a super detailed set up.

Some DNW clarification - since this is a canon that has political alliances through marriage I removed my general DNW of infidelity for this request; anything along the lines of what happens in the show where they’re together despite being married to someone else is fine. Similarly, my DNW of Darkfic is removed here as this canon can lean a bit dark/twisted & you’re very welcome to run in that vein, I just don’t want something unremittingly dark with a very bleak ending for my requested characters. My DNW of Rape/Non-Con still applies, but that’s not intended to ignore canon - referencing Lucrezia’s rape/discussing her trauma from it in either a canon story or AU is welcome, I just don’t want a scene involving rape in the fic.

Far From the Madding Crowd (2015): Gabriel Oak, Bathsheba Everdene

Fic rating preference: Any including Explicit.

The dynamic between Oak and Bathsheba with the reversal of their fortunes and all the things they can't say just gets me every time - the yearning in this film is delicious! I'd most like to read about what happens after the ending - they've had so much build up so how does having a relationship meet (or not) their expectations and how does their new physical relationship affect their daily life, especially with running the farm?

Also, I didn't request her, but I really enjoyed Liddy in the film and would be curious about how much she notices, esp as time goes on - an outsider POV fic where G&B were in the background and their story unfolded through Liddy's eyes would be very welcome. Other character reactions to G&B's relationship are fine as part of a story, but not as the focus of a whole fic.

I read the book a while back & was so-so about it, so would prefer just the film canon was used. I'm mostly interested in future fic, but missing scenes (especially in context of the Liddy POV fic) and minor canon divergence aus (e.g. to play with the timing) would be welcome too. Still, I'd like the core of their arc (and all that time growing - and yearning!) to remain the same and don't want the setting to change.

The Gilded Age (TV 2022): Marian Brook, Larry Russel

I find these two super cute and I do love a friends to lovers situation even more in a period drama. I really enjoyed the subtle, gradual development between Marian and Larry with their feelings almost taking them by surprise but then the kiss happened and felt so natural.

I'm mostly interested in future fic from the s2 finale. Based on the jump between seasons 1 & 2 I'm expecting the same to happen in s3, but I'd love to see the little details that might get skipped over on the series as they navigate their feelings - do they try to keep it quiet and between themselves at first? What makes them decide to tell others? I am also extremely curious about how their respective families will react to this development! A fic about Bertha and Aunt Agnes butting heads over the long road to the altar while Marian and Larry try to support each other (with some help from Ada and George perhaps?) could be really fun.

I am open to canon divergence AUs, but I’d prefer to keep the element of them being friends for a while first and having other relationships before they realise their feelings for one another. And I would definitely like to retain the historical setting of the show. I've already mentioned Marian's aunts and Larry's parents, but any other characters that are close to them like Peggy or Gladys or Oscar are welcome to make appearances too.

My Adventures with Superman: Lois Lane, Clark Kent

Fic rating preference: Not higher than Mature.

This series is such a fun watch and this Lois and Clark have such a great, adorable dynamic. Lois figuring his secret out herself in only a handful of episodes (and Jimmy having already known) was a great way to handle it. And that scene in late s2 when Clark thinks Lois is a figment of his imagination and after she tells him everything she did to find him, he goes 'that's an insane thing to do...you really must be Lois!!' - perfect!

Although I enjoyed s2, the amount of time spent on alien-related stories meant I didn't get enough of my fave thing in any Superman canon - Lois and Clark doing journalist stuff! Hence, that is my main prompt here - a fic a little less about the Superman side of things and more about them investigating some earth-bound stories (but maybe using some of Clark's powers to help). As should be obvious, I ship them so I would love to see a bit more of their dating life too when there aren't a bunch of crises one after the other.

Missing Scenes, Future Fic and Canon Divergence AUs are all good. The tone of this series would lend itself well to some cracky tropes so have fun with it. I love their friendship with Jimmy especially so feel free to include him in a significant way and (to a lesser extent) Kara or anyone from the Daily Planet, or the Kents.

One Day (TV 2024): Emma Morley, Dexter Mayhew

Fic rating preference: Not higher than Mature.

So I never read the book of this nor had I seen the film, but I was well aware of that ending for years - it was part of the reason I had resisted the book despite liking some of the author's other writing, and the show initially despite the many recs. Eventually I was finally in the right mood to try the show out and I loved it, even with its angsty end - the vibe of the show and the dynamic between the leads really pulled me in.

Naturally the conceit of the book/show means that we only get snippets of their lives and I'd just love to spend more time with these characters (who did not get enough time in the end *sniffles*). I'm not requesting 'fix-it' fic, but instead missing scenes across the many years encompassed over the show (but prior to the end of the penultimate episode). This doesn't have to necessarily be during the time when they're in a romantic relationship, or even when they are being actively friends - the show made it clear that even when they were on the outs they still thought/cared about each other. Anything that brings across how key their relationship was to both of them would be welcome (though if you want to focus on one character a little more than the other, I'd prefer for it to be Emma).

Appearances from any other characters in their lives are fine - I especially liked some of the stuff with Dex's parents so would be happy to see either of them and if you want to write his sister or Emma's family who we don't meet I'd be very interested to see what the Emma &/ Dex dynamic is like with those characters.

Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? (TV 2022): Frankie Derwent, Bobby Jones

A light-hearted mystery where the leads fall in love while investigating is exactly my vibe so no surprise that I loved this series. Bobby and Frankie have great banter and chemistry, and the show delighted me by including so many tropes I like (Friends to lovers! Mutual pining made awkward through class differences! Casual domesticity!).

I'm pretty open on this request - in the canon world, missing scenes (especially towards the end of the series when they skip past a few things), future fic (how do they make a marriage work?) or canon divergence are all good (in fact there's so many other ways they could have got together and if you want to take a longer, angstier route to their HEA I would eat that up). The canon setting is not that many years behind WWII and I am not opposed to including that in a future fic, if it's things like anxieties about the future or an emotional reunion during/post war - I certainly DNW to read about either of them dying because of the war (or otherwise)! I'm also open to setting change AUs here - I think a Regency AU of their situation where the class differences are even more keenly felt would be great, and would also enjoy a modern take on it (as long as it retained some of that class difference).

Despite the murder mystery aspect of canon, I'm not hugely into very detailed casefic here - however a fic that's about Frankie and Bobby's banter/relationship while they are investigating a case would be just as a fun as a fic only focused on the romance. If you want to send some more investigations/shenanigans their way feel free to include Knocker or Dr. Arbuthnot. I'd be happy to see either of their families too and I don't mind a future fic including them having kids though I'd prefer not to focus on Frankie being pregnant or original child characters.

Hi! Do you know of any fics where Harry and Draco are both Aurors and have to work together? I've read quite a few but haven't come across one in a while. Either permanently partners or firced together for a single case, both work for me. Now following Draco’s direct orders gives him intense pleasure, and Draco has a whole heap of troubles to deal with, not least the way Potter looks when the collar has him gasping with bliss. The whole situation would test the morals of a saint… and Draco’s no saint.THIS FIC!! EVERYTHING I EVER WANTED. I STILL REMEMBER CLICKING ON IT AND NEARLY ORGASMING RIGHT THERE and it totally does its description justice! Technically Draco is a cursebreaker here.

The sex is amazing, as is the fact that Draco wears (surprisingly practical!) heels and women’s clothing in general I LOVE IT SO MUCH

Highlands by Seefin / @seefin (16K)- The tent was a joke, that was basically the only explanation he could come up with as to why the Aurors would send he and Draco on a several-month mission with only their most basic model. Once, when Harry had been on one of the big ones, the kind of mission where there was a little Auror camp out in the wilderness, twenty or so tents all pitched practically on top of each other, he had slept in one with two stories. Actually it was more of a mezzanine level, but still. Their current one didn’t even have a fucking toilet. And if Harry were allowed to communicate with anyone other than Draco then he would definitely be lodging an official complaint right about now.This fic is so sweet and slow (despite being only 16K, idk how she does it!). I love the development of their relationship, and being forced into close quarters is especially w o n d e r f u l.

The speech they're trying to hide: President Trump's stellar UN speech

Seems the mainstream media are desperate to keep President Trump's stellar United Nations speech out of the news.

On Tuesday, Trump delivered a far from throwaway speech articulating the vision of the voters who elected him, speaking of nationalism, globalism, and socialism, along with an added rundown of problem nations to condemn and props for others.

For starters, it was a zero apologies for America speech, which was a breath of fresh air, given the previous administration.

He drove a fine definition of nationalism in the American sense, not other countries, as a positive thing that benefits not just the U.S., but all nations.  And he exuded pride in the success the U.S. has seen as a result of recognizing this very reality:

If you want freedom, take pride in your country. If you want democracy, hold onto your sovereignty. And if you want peace, love your nation. Wise leaders always put the good of their own people and their own country first.

The future does not belong to globalists. The future belongs to patriots. The future belongs to sovereign and independent nations who protect their citizens, respect their neighbors, and honor the differences that make each country special and unique.

It is why we in the United States have embarked on an exciting program of national renewal. In everything we do, we are focused on empowering the dreams and aspirations of our citizens. Thanks to our pro-growth economic policies, our domestic unemployment rate reached its lowest level in over half a century.

Fueled by massive tax cuts and regulations cuts, jobs are being produced at a historic rate. Six million Americans have been added to the employment rolls in under three years. Last month, African-American, Hispanic American, and Asian American unemployment reached their lowest rates ever recorded.

We are marshaling our nations vast energy abundance and the United States is now the number one producer of oil and natural gas anywhere in the world. Wages are rising, incomes are soaring, and 2.5 million Americans have been lifted out of poverty in less than three years.

As we rebuild the unrivaled might of the American military, we are also revitalizing our alliances by making it very clear that all of our partners are expected to pay their fair share of the tremendous defense burden which the United States has borne in the past. At the center of our vision for national renewal is an ambitious campaign to reform international trade.

He returned to the subject with a rousing conclusion, too:

Love of our nations makes the world better for all nations. So, to all the leaders here today, join us in the most fulfilling mission a person could have. The most profound contribution anyone can make — lift up your nations, cherish your culture, honor your histories, treasure your citizens. Make your countries strong and prosperous and righteous. Honor the dignity of your people and nothing will be outside of your reach.

When our nations are greater the future will be brighter, our people be happier and our partnerships will be stronger. With God's help, together we will cast off the enemies of liberty and overcome the oppressors of dignity. We will set new standards of living and reach new heights of human achievement. We will rediscover all truths, unravel all mysteries and make thrilling new breakthroughs. And we will find more beautiful friendship and more harmony among nations than ever before.

So much for Trump being a Nazi for being a nationalist, as the Left claims.  This isn't Nazi talk.

Trump also summed up perfectly the problems that globalism has morphed into, including the problem of open borders, perfectly cutting through the kultursmog promoted by the left — exposing them as the real anti-humanitarians:

"Today, I have a message for those open border activists who cloak themselves in the rhetoric of social justice: Your policies are not just, your policies are cruel and evil," he said, accusing them of promoting human smuggling and the "erasure of national borders."

You are empowering criminal organizations that prey on innocent men, women and children. You put your own false sense of virtue before the lives and well-being of countless innocent people," he said. "When you undermine border security, you are undermining human rights and human dignity."

Wow.

He also blasted socialism as a real problem in itself, something no world leader has ever done, but all the world's victims of socialism had to be cheering about.  Trump broke that barrier.

One of the most serious challenges our countries face is the specter of socialism. It's the wrecker of nations and destroyer of societies. Events in Venezuela remind us all that socialism and communism are not about justice. They are not about equality. They are not about lifting up the poor. And they are certainly not about the good of the nation. Socialism and communism are about one thing only, power for the ruling class.

Today I repeat a message for the world that I have delivered at home. America will never be a socialist country. In the last century, socialism and communism killed 100 million people.

It not only put its finger on the world's primary problem, it was also a beautiful speech. Trump described how nationalism isn't a hateful sort of thing - it was precisely this appreciation for nationalism that enables citizens to appreciate one another's differences. Trump had lovely words in it for all cultures, and praised many nations, it wasn't the rah-rah me-alone sort of speech. It was nationalism with a friendly hand out, calling for common ground, because, left unsaid, there is common ground as nation after nation elsewhere comes to embrace their own versions of Trump, too. 

He also did something unprecedented for any president - he brought up the need for human rights for gay people, women, and unborn babies, a human rights manifesto if there ever was one. Zero apologies, and not even the left has tried this.

But rest assured, the groundbreaking speech got overshadowed, first by the press's own efforts and then by the shenanigans in Congress over impeachment.

First, the press focused on a supposed glaring incident with Swedish child activist Greta Thunberg at the UN, which was a nothingburger. (Why, exactly, should a head of state give any face time to an obviously manipulated foreign activist?) A non-story.

Then, following President Trump's paradigm-shifting speech before the United Nations General Assembly, they pointed to the lack of applause, which was about to be expected from this globalist crowd. What it signaled was that they were listening closely, given the lack of cursory applause they give to everyone else, including Iran's crazed leaders.

After that, they decided the speech was very, very 'sleepy.' This one got played a lot.

First, CNBC's nothingburger:

President Donald Trump's United Nations speech was a snooze — at least for Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

The 81-year-old Ross took a nap — a very long nap — as his boss addressed the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday.

Television footage of Ross showed the wealthy businessman sleeping soundly as Trump talked about a possible trade deal with China — which is part of the Commerce chief's portfolio — and the U.S. stance on Iran.

Ross had his eyes firmly closed for as long as 15 minutes, video suggested, as Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave the impression of listening intently to Trump.

At one point, however, Ross's eyes opened. He still looked drowsy, though.

Boy, look at the microscopic attention to that. Ross later smacked them down with what looks like a pretty reasonable explanation:

"This is fake news," Ross said in a statement issued to CNBC by the Commerce Department, hours after this article first was published.

"I wear hearing aids and, during President Trump's inspiring speech, which covered in detail the entire range of significant issues facing the world, was concentrating on what was being said," Ross said.

Then they repeated it as a trope:

He sleepily accused Iran of all manner of international perfidy and gave China a few whacks. In what may have been an attempt to wake his audience up through sheer incoherence, he somnambulated his way through some anti-abortion rhetoric. It was at that point that I began to envy Wilbur Ross.

Daily Mirror:

Donald Trump sent a top ally to sleep with the 'low energy' and 'boring' tone of his speech to the UN General Assembly.

CNN:

And at the UN we watched as the leader of the free world delivered a sleepy, low-energy speech that zeroed in on one head-spinning conclusion: every nation should go at it alone.

It was anything but sleepy. Trump's quiet, deliberate tone was quite different from his rally tone, a wild off-the-cuff style of speaking, improvised plenty, but for that reason, it was far more significant.

Leave it up to the mass media to be unable to distinguish the two and imagine the improvised stuff is more important. Trump changed history with this speech and set new boundaries. No wonder the press is trying to obfuscate and distract.
