• Hair: "My hair is... Uh, what's the word, hazard, I think? Well, sometimes, it gets tangling that I broke many combs and uh, frizzy that my hair or something... Anyways, my hair's normal."

• Hats: "I love hats, especially the sturdy ones. Since the sturdy ones never get burn or get a hole from something, so yeah... Although I don't even know why did I love hats to begin with."

• Class: "I honestly can't decide where to focus on, all because I kept thinking about the pros and cons that I just, started to learn anything as much as possible... Truth to be told, I don't even know what I was doing."

• Food: "My favorites and least favorites? Well, I don't have any tastes when it comes to food, but as long as it's edible and parasite-free, I'll eat it. And I don't eat any food with poisons, because I don't want to get bedridden for another day and miss something else."

• Remembering things: "It's easy to forget, especially names. AND ESPECIALLY THOSE NAMES WITH COMPLICATED WORDS, like Ighar, uh, whatever it's pronunciation and I can't remember that much name, so I just nickname things, like Money-man and Tarsier Watcher. And one time, I mistook the name Beringer as Burger and said that infront of him, I never felt so embarrassed in my whole life... But at least, it's different than me accidentally ramming into some unknown islands and crashing my ship. Then getting scolded for many times."

• Ship: "My ships? Well, I only bought the Caravel and the rest are history. So long story short, pirates broke my ketch and nearly killing my crew in it, so in revenge, I killed the pirates and stole their brig then redecorated it as mine, and I kept their treasures, so thanks I guess..."

• Magic: "First things first, Earth Magic is the Best! Like I can create golems with it and then use it for exploration with a less hassles and also, it's great for defense since I could just build walls and I can make a fortress! But the downside is I lacked to much to do those that my dream of having a 300 army of golems were nearly impossible. And hey, at least I can mash people with flying rocks that looks like meteor, imagine the terror on their faces."

• Father Figure: "I was once asked that question, but I could only say nothing because I don't remember who's my parents so does my past. Then, if thinking someone who's nearly a father figure right now, is Edward. Well, he taught me some few things like ship navigation and gaining a sense of direction because I get lost easily, so for that question—that I looked at him as my answer. But someone said "Oh no, many maiden's behind my back said he's a Daddy, not a Father" and I was like "Huh?!" then that person disappeared and without a trace. Look! I get it, but please, don't think of him like that!"

• Romance: "I don't really have any time for those, since there are many things that needs to be dealt with. But, if we're talking about my personal standards to date with someone, he should be more stronger than me and richer than me, and also has more connections than me so I can do things easier. Plus, it'll be great if he's not my enemy or related to any of my enemies, since I don't want to be involved in some drama... Don't speak about my crimes in Ravenna though, I don't want to talk about it."

• Ruby Vermillion: "That woman, honestly, what's with her?! Like, in the middle of the daylight, she just attacked me for no reason at all. Girl! Lemme get that hat first because it's limited edition, girl! And, she just like "Where's my mother?" this and that with angry eyes, and I was like "HELLO?!" I mean, I don't even know her or her mother st all. Then, well, I just found out that she mistook me for having any connections with the Order, though it's true but more on—negative terms, since well, long story that I already forgot."

• 'Winter White': "I... Had no idea what's going in his mind. We barely met but I hated him already. Okay, first off, he attacked one of my crew then leave him in deep and grave injuries, then second, HOPPING into my boat and just told me "Edward is the Daddy" and OH BOY, he nearly—Nearly bomb the whole Sailor Lodge with me on it with many gunpowder stacked under the ports, but good thing someone intervened, I nearly died! So does everyone in it! And it's no wonder why the Grand Navy are on his trails everyday. Jeez, I hope he stop doing more trouble."

I wish we had more female characters like Eleanor Shellstrop. One of the most unlikable people you've ever met. Read a Buzzfeed article on most rude things you can do on a daily basis and decided to use that as a list of goals. Makes everyone's day worse just by being there. Dropped a margarita mix on the ground and tried to pick it up, only to get hit by a row of shopping carts which pushed her into the road where she was hit by a boner pill delivery truck, killing her instantly. Cannot keep a romantic partner despite being bisexual. Had a terrible childhood but will die before she gets therapy. Best employee at a scam company. Just the worst but also can't help but root for her to improve.

Absolute loser. Girl-failure. Bad at almost everything. Literally perfect female character.

Mizu, femininity, and fallen sparrows

In my last post about Mizu and Akemi, I feel like I came across as overly critical of Mizu given that Mizu is a woman who - in her own words - has to live as a man in order to go down the path of revenge.

If she is ever discovered to be female by the wrong person, she will not only be unable to complete her quest, but there's a good chance that she'll be arrested or killed.

So it makes complete sense for Mizu to distance herself as much as possible from any behavior that she feels like would make someone question her sex.

I felt so indignant toward Mizu on my first couple watchthroughs for this moment. Why couldn't Mizu bribe the woman and her child's way into the city too? If Mizu is presenting as a man, couldn't she claim to be the woman's escort?

However, this moment makes things pretty clear. Mizu knows all too well the plight of women in her society. She knows it so well that she cannot risk ever finding herself back in their position again. She helps in what little way she can - without drawing attention to herself.

Mizu is not a hero and she is not one to make of herself a martyr - she will not set herself on fire to keep others warm. There's room to argue that Mizu shouldn't prioritize her quest over people's lives, but given the collateral damage Mizu can live with in almost every episode of season 1, Mizu is simply not operating under that kind of morality at this point. ("You don't know what I've done to reach you," Mizu tells Fowler.)

And while I still feel like Mizu has an obvious and established blind spot when it comes to Akemi because of their differences in station, such that Mizu's judgment of Akemi and actions in episode 5 are the result of prejudice rather than the result of Mizu's caution, I also want to establish that Mizu is just as caged as Akemi is, despite her technically having more freedom while living as a man.

Mizu can hide her mixed race identity some of the time, and she can hide her sex almost all of the time, but being able to operate outside of her society's strict rules for women does not mean she cannot see their plight.

It does not mean she doesn't hurt for them.

Back to Mizu and collateral damage, remember that sparrow?

While Mizu is breaking into Boss Hamata's manse, she gets startled by a bird and kills it on reflex. She then cradles it in her hands - much more tenderly than we've seen Mizu treat almost anything up to this point in the season:

She then puts it in its nest, with its unhatched eggs. Almost like she's trying to make the death look natural. Or like an accident.

You see where I'm going with this.

When Mizu kills Kinuyo, Mizu lingers in the moment, holding the body tenderly:

And btw a lot of stuff about this show hit me hard, but this remains the biggest gut punch of them all for me, Mizu holding that poor girl's body close, GOD

When Mizu arranges the "scene of the crime," Kinuyo's body is delicate, birdlike. And Mizu is so shaken afterward that she gets sloppy. She's horrified at this kill to the point that she can't bring herself to take another innocent life - the boy who rats her out.

MIZU'S ONE MOMENT OF SOFTNESS AND MERCY, COMING ON THE HEELS OF HER NEEDING TO KILL A GIRL TO SPARE HER THE WORST FATE THAT THIS RIGID SOCIETY HAS TO OFFER WOMEN, AND TO SPARE A BROTHEL FULL OF INNOCENT WOMEN WHO ARE THE CASTOFFS OF SOCIETY, NEARLY RESULTS IN ALL OF THEIR DEATHS

No wonder Mizu is as stoic and cold as she is.

And no wonder Mizu has no patience for Akemi whatsoever right before the terrible reveal and the fight breaks out:

Speaking of Akemi - guess who else is compared to a bird!

The plumage is more colorful, a bit flashier. But a bird is a bird.

And, uh

Yeah.

I like to think that Mizu killing the sparrow is not only foreshadowing for what she must do to Kinuyo, but is also a representation of the choice she makes on Akemi's behalf. She decides to cage the bird because she believes the bird is "better off." Better off caged than... dead.

But because Mizu doesn't know Akemi or her situation, she of course doesn't realize that the bird is fated to die if it is caged and sent back home.

Mizu is clearly not happy, or pleased, or satisfied by allowing Akemi to be dragged back to her father:

But softness and mercy haven't gotten Mizu anywhere good, recently.

There is so much tragedy layered into Mizu's character, and it includes the things she has to witness and the choices she makes - or believes she has to make - involving women, when she herself can skirt around a lot of what her society throws at women. Although, I do believe that it comes at the cost of a part of Mizu's soul.

After all, I'm gonna be haunted for the rest of this show by Mizu's very first prayer in episode 1:

"LET" her die. Because as Ringo points out, she doesn't "know how" to die.

listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded mfer happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.

Learning that fans hated Applejack and called her "boring" is crazyyy to me because I genuinely, unironically believe AJ's the most complex character in the main six.

Backstory-wise, she was born into a family of famers/blue collar workers who helped found the town she lives in. She grew up a habitual liar until she had the bad habit traumatized outta her. She lost both her parents and was orphaned at a young age, having to step up as her baby sister's mother figure. She's the only person in the main gang who's experienced this level of loss and grief (A Royal Problem reveals that AJ dreams about memories of being held by her parents as a baby). She moved to Manhattan to live with her wealthy family members, only to realize she'll never fit in or be accepted, even amongst her own family. The earlier seasons imply she and her family had money problems too (In The Ticket Master, AJ wants to go to the gala to earn money to buy new farm equipment and afford hip surgery for her grandma).

Personality-wise, she's a total people-pleaser/steamroller (with an occasional savior complex) who places her self worth on her independence and usefulness for other people, causing her to become a complete workaholic. In Applebuck Season, AJ stops taking care of herself because of her obsessive responsibilities for others and becomes completely dysfunctional. In Apple Family Reunion, AJ has a tearful breakdown because in she thinks she dishonored her family and tarnished her reputation as a potential leader –– an expectation and anxiety that's directly tied to her deceased parents, as shown in the episode's ending scene. In The Last Roundup, AJ abandons her family and friends out of shame because believes she failed them by not earning 1st place in a rodeo competition. She completely spirals emotionally when she isn't able to fulfill her duties toward others. Her need to be the best manifests in intense pride and competitiveness when others challenge her. And when her pride's broken, she cowers and physically hides herself.

Moreover, it's strongly implied that AJ has a deep-seated anger. The comics explore her ranting outbursts more. EQG also obviously has AJ yelling at and insulting Rarity in a jealous fit just to hurt her feelings (with a line that I could write a whole dissection on). And I'm certain I read in a post somewhere that in a Gameloft event, AJ's negative traits are listed as anger.

Subtextually, a lot of these flaws and anxieties can be (retroactively) linked to her parents' death, forcing her to grow up too quickly to become the adult/caregiver of the family (especially after her big brother becomes semiverbal). Notice how throughout the series, she's constantly acting as the "mom friend" of the group (despite everything, she manages to be the most emotionally mature of the bunch). Notice how AJ'll switch to a quieter, calmer tone when her friends are panicking and use soothing prompts and questions to talk them through their emotions/problems; something she'd definitely pick up while raising a child. Same with her stoicism and reluctance at crying or releasing emotions (something Pinkie explicitly points out). She also had a childhood relationship with Rara (which, if you were to give a queer reading, could easy be interpreted as her first 'aha' crush), who eventually left her life. (Interestingly enough, AJ also has an angry outburst with Rara for the same exact reasons as with EQG Rarity; jealous, upset that someone else is using and changing her). It's not hard to imagine an AJ with separation anxiety stemming from her mother and childhood friend/crush leaving. I'm also not above reading into AJ's relationship with her little sister (Y'all ever think about how AB never got to know her parents, even though she shares her father's colors and her mother's curly hair?).

AJ's stubbornness is a symptom of growing up too quickly as well. Who else to play with your baby sister when your brother goes nonverbal (not to discount Big Mac's role in raising AB)? Who else to wake up in the middle of the night to care for your crying baby sister when your grandma needs her rest? When you need to be 100% all the time for your family, you tend to become hard-stuck with a sense of moral superiority. You know what's best because you have to be your best because if you're aren't your best, then everything'll inevitably fall apart and it'll be your fault. And if you don't know what's best –– if you've been wrong the whole time –– that means you haven't been your best, which means you've failed the people who rely on you, which means you can't fulfill your role in the family/society, which makes you worthless . We've seen time and time again how this compulsive need to be right for the sake of others becomes self-destructive (Apple Family Reunion, Sound of Silence, all competitions against RD). We've seen in The Last Roundup how, when no longer at her best, AJ would rather remove herself from her community than confront them because she no longer feels of use to them.

But I guess it is kinda weird that AJ has "masculine" traits and isn't interested in men at all. It's totally justified that an aggressively straight, misogynistic male fandom would characterize her as a "boring background character." /s

• Favorite Food: “In my perspective, soup are far more superior than any other meals. I don’t need to munch more to eat as I can tolerate to gobble it. Especially, the soup wasn’t flavorful since my stomach was severely sensitive to any spices or some specific ingredients.”

• Least Favorite Food: “Spicy meals is something I’m not fond of, well, it triggers my stomach that I once got bedridden as a child after eating my late-aunt’s special dish. Until now, I wished not to remember that.”

• Magic: “My magic is quite strong that I can’t handle it fully, to the point I resorted to weapons to utilize it. And so far, cons weigh more in ny daily-life as my magic often burns my fat, thus leaving me in quite tired with fatigue is were using it. If not, I’ll be feeling little shocks all day and night that it made me more sensitive to any environment, especially the temperatures.”

• Aisha Maximinius: “That girl… Is someone I’ve dealt but she disappeared so sudden. Without a trace just like THEM. The first time I saw her, my instincts told me of something similar to that hooded figure that took my mother away, so… I fought her, and tried to apprehend her for intel about them, but she disappeared after bursting some earth magic on me… Carelessness on my part. However, that girl, has something more than that… I can’t put a finger on it. Well, I hope in the future, we’ll be able to talk things in more civilized way, even though it’s nearly impossible since I might marked myself a bad impression on her.”

• Siblings: “I have… Many siblings… And don’t ask how since I don’t have my mother’s entire journals and diaries. And the first sibling I’d encountered so far, was someone who joined the Grand Navy and more boastful as if I’m seeing a male-version of my mother, in more arrogant way.
