K-the-I??? & Kenny Segal — Genuine Dexterity (Backwoodz Studioz)

It was a pleasant surprise when the announcement came through that Billy Woods’ Backwoodz Studioz had a late-year release in store from Kiki Ceac and Kenny Segal. Anyone paying attention to hip-hop in the last 10 years well knows Segal’s name, most likely via Woods’ acclaimed Hiding Places and Maps. But anyone paying attention to hip-hop in the last 20 years will recognize Ceac’s peculiar K-the-I??? nom de plume from releases on Mush, Ninjatune and Big Dada. Memories are short in the rap game, though, so if anything, Genuine Dexterity serves as a welcome reintroduction to one of the finer artists working downstream from Def Jux’s late-1990s breakout.

Like others in the Backwoodz orbit, K-the-I??? has weathered the whims of hip-hop taste making over a timeline that’s taken him from Cambridge, Mass to L.A. to Chicago to Berlin and back again. He took a mid-2010s sabbatical from music altogether. As he noted in an illuminating interview with Caltrops Press over the summer, his writing has gone from paper and pen to freestyles on a phone that then get printed out so he can read them clearly from behind the mic. He’s a fan of Broadcast and Mach-Hommy alike. This is a dude who knows what it means to be older, wiser, more focused, less provincial.

It shows in the rhymes and rhythms of Genuine Dexterity. “Ionosphere” sets the album in motion as it will continue, and it’s clear right from the off that K has not come to play around — these rhymes are razor-sharp. One thing that’s always impressed me dating back to my first brush with him on 2006’s Broken Love Letter is the clarity of his vocal delivery for such high speeds of tongue-twisting spitting. If anything, what it conveys is a sense of engagement, that K is locked all the way in; you can get him rifling through his verses before pulling up the reins to make sure you notice how easily he says his mission statement: “I bet I can touch the sky so easily / even if you don’t believe in me.” Features from formidable emcees like ShrapKnel, Open Mike Eagle and Fatboi Sharif do nothing to deter this attentiveness.

For his own part, Segal aids and abets with some of his better recent beats. While K’s tearing the mic apart alongside both Woods and Armand Hammer compatriot Elucid on “Spellcasted Television,” Segal lays down a beat to match with scrawling guitar that weds spacey synths and claustrophobically dirty percussion; it recalls nothing so much as the best El-P productions. Vinyl crackle lines the sax-wailing, vibraphone-inflected “Warhammer.” More jazz sampling, this time featuring a busy bassline and more horns, hit on “Crushed Heavenly.” Rubber-band oscillations straight out of a 1950s sci-fi film drive the verses of “Season of the Sickness” before the bass weight hits for the chorus. A bubblingly bucolic, RJD2-esque downtempo tone colors “Immediate Imminent Immunity.” Together with K and company tying it all together, the album works as one despite its occasionally surprising sonic ventures.

There’s a loose union of antediluvian hip-hop vets out there — Run the Jewels, the Backwoodz crew, Open Mike, Roc Marciano, Shabazz Palaces, you know these names — that in recent years have found a modicum of fame while maintaining a respectable semblance of artistic integrity. With Genuine Dexterity, it’s safe to add K-the-I??? to that list. The game, as it turns out, needed him.

"Ser Shockwave! We have something" Shockwave ceaces her work, sighing before tucking the notebook of schematics away. She lifts her helm from its place on the desk and puts it on before speaking. "You may enter."

Two of the rangers under her command push their way into the tent, but pause to hold the flaps open as a third enters along with… Oh, now that is interesting. A prisoner with the Magnus's crest. She's a small little thing, clad in lighter clothes than Shockwave would expect of a soldier or scout. But there are two things in particular that catch her eye. One is how blue she is. Her tunic is the same deep baby blue as her hair, and her tighter underclothes that at first glance seemed black are almost certainly a deep blue as well. The second is the fact she seems… resigned to her fate. She shifts a bit in the ranger's grip, but it seems more from discomfort than any genuine attempt to escape. "You don't look like any scout I've ever seen." Shockwave states planely, standing to approach the captive. "Tell me your name." The captive looks up at her with wide eyes, also a striking blue, and blinks a few times. "Oh, me? Well I don't look like a scout because I'm a messenger, I have to move quietly and quickly and everything a scout would wear would simply slow me down! And I was quite on my way to gather an update from the west when these brutes so rudely grabbed me." The still-nameless messenger shoots one of the rangers a dirty look before turning back to Shockwave. "Oh but you must be the infamous Ser Shockwave! Your reputation procedes you. Is it true nobody has seen your face and lived?" "You haven't told me your name, little hummingbird."

AoaS: Hello, hello? Wonderful! It works! Hello! I finally found a way to send messages! It's a little finicky, but it functions! My sincerest apologies for being silent for so long. I'm doing okay. I've been both busy setting this up, and also have not had much to say. DA has been doing some exploring around my can, so it's been just me and the Slugcat most of the time.

AoaS: It hasn't been entirely uneventful though! The Slugcat has been bringing me pearls to read! One of them has some details about cultivating certain plants, there's one with nothing but scratches, and a favorite of mine, one with blueprints for a "train"! I've never seen one, but from what I can read, it's a series of buildings that can drive around through tunnels! I wish I could have seen one!

AoaS: Oh! How could I forget! There is a coloured one as well! It's a gorgeous pale teal, it is faded and scratched, but I can make out a short message! "Drifting Soot. I understand your efforts. However, I suggest you research another subject. You are causing near irreversible damages to your can, which will greatly inhibit your abilities to function as intended. As I am in a position of authority over you, I command you to ceace these "experiments", and for void's sake fix your communications array. I have the third Faz-Tober drawing done. But I'm posting the fourth because I can, and I managed to double it up with the colour theme of the FNAF Amino's trick or treat challenge.

This drawing was based on the prompt 'Ladies night', and I decided to draw PT. Is lady, is night, it fits.

I also get to show off Blake's passive again. Blake (Toy Bonnie ghost) possessed PT and effectively gives her pyromancy as her possession ability. Being posessed let's PT have a degree of control over and an immunity to fire.

A certain golden ghost has taken up residence in a decoration, and an old man once reported that certain ghosts will ceace to exist if burned. Yet no amount of fire has given her anything more than lumps of molten plastic.

Really annoying that Gerald Taylor is possessing one of her favourite Halloween decorations and won't leave so she has to drive him out by force on her favourite holiday.
