“This time, he makes himself linger in the touch, newly terrified at what it could mean if he pulls away before Anakin is ready—where his padawan could go for what Obi-Wan has always tried so hard to be strong enough not to offer him.” am i just sleepy at 6:25am in the morning or i don't understand it 😭😭😭
-> i wrote this in my comment after rereading the counseling au again. and it has been two hours and i've also finished the "fake marriage" au's second chapter but i'm still stuck on this scene. can you please explain what's the meanng of it? /gen 🥺🥺🥺 pls help me sleep peacefully
ahh hello i am always willing to try to explain!:
(this is from couples counseling au, chapter 4)
so this line is obi-wan wrestling with himself, trying to relax into the affection, because he’s afraid that if he pulls away too soon from anakin’s casual touch, anakin will leave him to go to his wife who will give him as many casual touches as anakin needs. Like, if he pulls away too soon, when obi-wan is ready for the touch to end but not when anakin is, Anakin will then go to his wife to complete his physical needs when obi-wan should be able to give anakin whatever he needs
and the part about 'tried so hard to be strong enough not to offer him' is mostly just obi-wan's self-denial kicking in and probably his weird issues with touch and anakin and touching anakin
but so basically the 'where' is padmé, the 'what' is touch/physical comfort, and the last part just implies that obi-wan has a long history of struggling with trying to give anakin the touch he needs without going overboard and giving in and touching him more---maybe as much as obi-wan wants

Anakin’s love and marriage to Padmé wasn’t the issue of why he fell to the dark side. He was already being groomed by Palpatine in becoming his apprentice, and Padmé not being there wouldn’t have changed that. She just made it easier. Anakin was born a slave, which doesn’t leave him in the right headspace, and ever since Shmi died, Anakin became more unstable. Inevitably, he became more obsessed with control and wanting the power to stop the ones he loves from dying. Had Padmé not been in his life, Anakin still would have fallen due to Palpatine’s manipulations and topped with the Jedi’s mistreatment of Anakin. The Jedi and even OW failed Anakin in a way where Anakin came to a point where he doubts their faith in him, and he in return loses his trust him them. He says so himself in the ROTS novel. None of that had anything to do with Padmé.
But to insinuate that Anakin only cared for gaining “power” and essentially his “greed” is to blame for his actions, is super reductive understanding of his character. Yes, Anakin was greedy for control, and power. But not because he’s power hungry and wants to rule the galaxy. He only ever wanted more power to keep his loved ones safe, to assume control over what happens to him. (and this would’ve happened even if he and Padmé weren’t together.) saying that if Anakin “truly cared about saving his wife”, he would have told OW or any of the masters about his situation but didn’t because he was “greedy” is again, incorrect. Because Anakin DID go to the Jedi for advice. He talked to Yoda. Anakin put his faith into the Jedi but they didn’t exactly lead him down the path he needed.
Doubled with the fact that he knows the Council doesn’t trust him, and him not being sure he can trust them, (yes, including OW.) this led him to seeking answers in other and more dangerous places. Which was Palpatine. Whom Anakin is already vulnerable to and was being groomed by. Anakin’s fall to the darkside was due to his desperation and desire to save his wife, the love of his life. Not because he was greedy for more power and that he didn’t truly care about saving Padmé. That’s just a bad analysis of his character, intentions, and motivations. Anakin only became obsessed with the idea of “gaining power to rule and obtain authority” happened AFTER he fell. And that’s because the darkside plays with your sanity like that, makes you want and do things you normally wouldn’t do or want.
The main point is: Anakin’s fall doesn’t stem from his greed for wanting power because he seeks heroism, status, and authority. It was out of genuine love and desperation for his wife. Then again, his marriage to Padmé also isn’t to blame for his fall, because that was due to Anakin’s own fear of loss and abandonment. He would’ve fallen under any circumstance, with how unstable, vulnerable, and manipulated he was. That was the tragedy. He was always doomed to fall.

Vader is funny with outsider knowledge, for example titles, even though he doesn’t brag about them he doesn’t brag about anything and you’d assume Vader has pride (he does, just not for Sidiouses empire) and he lists all of his titles when asked
Person: who are you?
Vader: I AM DARTH VADER, LORD OF THE EMPIRE, SUPREME COMMANDER OF IMPERIL ARMIES, THE EMPERORS SECOND IN COMMAND BLAH BLAH BLAH…
But in reality the only titles he’s ever given himself are husband, father, mechanic, and pilot, which ties into power. Most officers of ranks as high as Vader are power hungry, not all of them, but most, so you’d assume Vader’s the same.
But we always forget Vader never wanted power?? Well, he wanted the power to stop his wife from dying (both by getting the rank of Jedi Master therefore more knowledge and joining Palpatine who promised to give him the power to save her) but there was manipulation there so it doesn’t count also it was only to power to save his wife, not to rule the galaxy or anything. He would’ve been happy being a house husband, maybe with a side job fixing up or building ships, but no, Palpatine made him into the Emperors Fist, the Jedi Slayer, I can’t think of any more names!

comparing obi wan's to anakin's trajectory is a jackass move cause yeah, obi wan never had it easy and had plenty reasons to fall as well but he didn't have the pressure to be perfect as chosen one, he didn't have a fucking vulture preying on his relationships and overall life; he didn't have to take of a 14yo on the middle of a war when he was 19, yes he watched his mentor die but that's quite differently from dreaming about your mom being tortured to death for days and not been able to save her to then years later you have the same goddamn dream about your wife. the order you serve isn't the same anymore the republic you fought for isn't nearly as perfect and your mentor is asking you to spy on the only guy that seems reliable to you - but the same mentor lied to you before, you thought he had died, what more lies do the council are telling him now?
so yeah anakin lost many things and a lot of things happened to him but it's unfair to compare with obi wan life - who did lost many people - because they're way different. Anakin not only lost people and confidence and security he was also manipulated into slavery again and I'm so done with people treating him like a whiny baby that did stupid because he truly believed palpatine was going to help him - what evidence shows he wouldn't? palpatine preyed and groomed anakin since he was 9 and the jedi thought it was cool a child hanging out with a stranger but everyone going to point at the victim to choose what seemed the only way for him

I think it’s equally heartbreaking and hilarious that obi-wan never quite says he misses Anakin, in fact often rues the fact that Skywalkers and their special brand of chaos seem to plague his life, but also every other line is reminiscent and nostalgic and sad about how anakin always forgot to pack his socks or the look on his face the first time he saw rain or how he’d use the chosen one thing to wheedle extra desserts

Anakin being haunted by his mother once he becomes Darth Vader and having an Azula from Atla style breakdown where Shmi tells him something along the lines of "this isn't the life I wished for you/you're back to being a slave" and Anakin smashing a mirror

wait lol au where post-war, the jedi order does a date auction a la every cliche ever where they auction off a date night with one of their jedi generals. it's supposed to raise credits for various post-war charities as well as stoke good feelings about the order (the smear campaign was pretty effective, even if sidious died before the genocide bit)
obviously both the hero with no fear and the negotiator are put on the metaphorical chopping block. anakin is a Good Husband™️ so he clears this with Padmé first, and she laughs and agrees and wishes him luck in surviving the hoards of fans that desire him carnally. she says as a senator, she will be expected to attend and maybe even bid. they both agree that it would be way too obvious for their super secret marriage if she bids on anakin, and anakin asks her to bid on obi-wan in a spur of the moment thing.
it's just. obi-wan was really hurt aboard the invisible hand and then he was hurt again when fighting with grievous. and is anyone vetting these random people who will get to go on a date with the jedi? anyone could win!! a disgruntled separatist could win obi-wan's attention for a night and then take him on a date and then kill him!!!! under anakin's very nose!!!
anakin actually gets like. super concerned about this possibility. like super concerned. he gets padmé to promise that she will bid however much it takes to win obi-wan's hand (she is after all generationally wealthy) and she agrees because she loves him and then also follows through because she's a woman of her word.
anakin gets bid on by several people, one woman wins, it's whatever, anakin doesn't care. what anakin cares about is making sure he and this person can go to the same restaurant as obi-wan and padmé. just like. to make sure obi-wan is alright. he was looking quite flushed during the bidding? anakin is Concerned.
and anakin's poor date, who paid millions of credits for his attention, has to deal with an anakin who is obsessed with what's happening a table over and why are they laughing and are their knees touching beneath the table and maybe anakin should go over and like? break it up? his master is obviously a bit uncomfortable in all this candlelight. he looks beautiful, obviously, but he's clearly uncomfortable and he would feel better if anakin were there. obviously.
and anakin's poor date ALSO has to deal with meeting obi-wan kenobi after/during dinner because anakin can't keep in his lane, and general kenobi is downright hostile and cold to her because he's feeling incredibly overprotective at the thought of anakin having to spend time with some woman who bought him. as if he were a slave again.

an underrated obikin moment from the rots novelization is when we learn that in the scene where anakin's seeking advice he lets yoda assume he's talking about visions of obi-wan instead of padmé because "it was close enough"

Suggesting that Anakin’s love for Padmé was “conditional” doesn’t fit right when you know he continues to love her just as intensely and feel extreme guilt and remorse over what HE did to her for the entirety of his life.

become a dictator out of grief, ignoring your true ideals and how much you have fought for people, because you have power to abuse and someone took advantage of your emotions? oh, welcome back, Anakin Skywalker!
