she’ll have the world if she wants it
uhtred ragnarsson x fem!reader, 1.9k words tw: pregnancy, canon typical violence, blood, kidnapping, general worry and distress a/n: this was requested by @elbereth-bluebird! i started writing it as soon as you sent in the ask, so i apologize for it taking me forever to finish. i love uhtred.
The confession slipped through your lips before you had half the gall to stop yourself. Eadith stared at you with wide eyes, lips slightly parted as she glanced over your shoulder. The men continued on laughing over the fire, ignoring you for the time being. Osferth stoked the smoldering embers as Sihtric threw on a few more pieces of wood, bringing the fire to life once more.
Uhtred was all smiles, glancing your way—not that you saw. Your eyes were glued onto Eadith’s face as terror spread through your body.
It was as if time itself had stopped, mocking you for the confession that had left you moments prior. Did you anger something far greater than mortal life? Surely not.
But the look your dearest friend gave you made you think otherwise.
Would she tell? No.
You hoped not, anyway.
"You are with child?" she repeated, hand raised over her mouth as she whispered. She could never be too careful (the men liked to eavesdrop every now and then, even if it were to just be reading lips—Finan had a knack for that, but she only figured it out recently). "And the father? Does he know?"
"No, and—and I do not want him to find out. Not now." You fidgeted in your seat, tension eating at the back of your throat as you fought the urge to cry. This could ruin him. This would ruin him, and he wouldn’t ever look at you the same.
Eadith reached forward and took ahold of your hands, worry akin to the fire that raged close by. "Who..." she trailed off, thumbs gently brushing against your knuckles as she searched your face.
You looked away from her, skin burning as your nerves ran through your body. You did not need to say anything to your dear friend. She would know with a response like that.
Him.
"Oh," she breathed out, a smile forming soon after. "Had I'd known, perhaps I would have given the two of you more privacy the other night—"
You slapped her arm in retaliation, eyes wide. "Eadith!"
She let out a soft laugh. The realization that it was indeed him made it all the better. You would be taken care of, even in the worst of winters. When the summer days came, sun glaring down and burning your skin, he would be there to lend a hand.
He was good for that, if not anything.
"When you decide to tell him, he will be elated. I promise you, my dear friend. A child is a gift,” she said.
You may not have found it within your heart to realize this, but she knew all was well. He would never let you want for nothing.
You clenched your jaw. You couldn't tell him. Gift or not, there were other pressing matters at hand.
Between King Alfred and the constant threat of war, you were certainly an afterthought; a hump to keep his mind off of things for the night.
You loved him; you did. You had known it for some time now, and it had blossomed the first time you saw him. Perhaps it would be safe to say he was the love of your life, even if he would never see you in such a light.
Perhaps that is why you knew you needed to keep it a secret. He was far more than you and the child that had begun to grow inside of you not too many moons ago.
"Promise me," you said, voice lowered back to a whisper. "You mustn't say a word of this, Eadith. I... will once I am ready. But for now, the time just isn't right."
"I will not say a word," she said, placing a hand over yours. "Your confidence in me will stay strong, Y/n."
You gave a faint smile. "I know."
It all happened so quickly.
The Danes had arrived well within the night, and while some were able to escape safely, many did not. Confusion was high as they couldn't understand how they found them; Uhtred had found a place to camp that should have been safe. And yet, there he stood, looking at the destruction in front of him, the blood of slain men soaking the earth. They had left nearly as soon as they arrived; a warning, perhaps. A raid on a camp that was meant to entice fear in Uhtred's very soul. A warning for the English King that waged war against them.
But Uhtred worried little about that. King Alfred could deal with it when the moment came for him to act. He had proven that time and time again, almost to the point of downright annoyance. No, the trivial act of war enticed him little at this very moment, especially when all of his friends had been accounted for, save for one.
The only one that mattered far more than his brothers—than the ones he spilt blood with.
You.
Where were you? Where had you gone? He hadn't found you amongst the bodies that littered the grounds.
Perhaps he had overlooked you, and you rested off to the side of the bloodbath with Eadith. Or maybe, you did lie amongst the dead, waiting for passage to the afterlife.
If only he could think straight—maybe then he would find you.
Eadith left the sanctity of her horse, and Finan, searching for you—her dearest friend. She looked at the bodies, the untouched tents, the people still alive and well.
When she couldn't find you, she ran to Uhtred, calling his name.
"Have you found Y/n? Have you seen her anywhere?" Her voice came out in a rush—panicked.
Uhtred shook his head. If she hadn't seen you, then the only other place you could be would be with the Danes that came.
You wouldn't have been the only one taken, but perhaps you were the most important. They weren't there just for a warning. They were there to send a message that would shake Uhtred to his core. They had his lady.
Lost in his thoughts, he barely reacted when Eadith grabbed onto his arm.
"My Lord, she is with child," Eadith said, heart pounding in her chest.
Uhtred's head snapped back to look at her.
"You are not in earnest," he retorted, staring at her in disbelief.
She pursed her lips, hand still gripping his arm. "I am, my Lord," she said. "She told me just last night. I swore to keep it secret, but since she is missing—"
"—my Lord!"
Sihtric's voice came from behind the two. Uhtred looked over his shoulder, eyes wide. The Dane pushed a nearly unconscious man to the ground, scowling.
"He hid amongst the trees, but he will talk," he said, chin held high as he looked at Uhtred. "He will lead us to the Danes."
Uhtred clenched his jaw, moving away from Eadith. "Wake him. They have Y/n."
It couldn't have been more than a few days. The Danes that had captured you hadn't touched you. In fact, a woman came around, saying something about how because you were Uhtred's woman, she wouldn't do anything to you. Unless Uhtred never showed. He would know where to find her as soon as he realized it—perhaps as soon as he found the bait.
He wanted a deal, she had said. Something that would benefit both of them in due time.
But perhaps this Dane had the wrong Lord. Uhtred never took kindly to his men being killed, and he wouldn't take kindly to whatever had happened that night.
You had only managed to see a blur of blood and the sound of screams still plagued your mind, but beyond that, you knew nothing.
You knew not of where you were, or who had captured you. You just hoped that wherever Uhtred was, he was safe.
For now, you would be, too.
You hoped.
The gods had looked upon Uhtred the morning he infiltrated the Danes' base. It looked as if he had opened a slaughterhouse (especially when they began to fight back), but he cared little about the blood spilled.
The fool who had captured you bore a gruesome reality—Uhtred wouldn't hear him out. He had little regard for those who took what was rightfully his.
As soon as the man took his last breath, he turned to look at his trusted men.
"I'm to find her," he said. "There shall be no more blood spilled, unless they give you trouble. Keep guard until I return."
With a simple nod from Osferth, Uhtred was on his way.
And when he finally found you, high up in the fortress tower, the relief he felt was immense. He had never known his heart to be filled with such joy, seeing you alive and well.
You stood from your small bed, eyes wide as you watched the blood-covered Lord walk in, watching you and taking you in as if you'd disappear once more in the blink of an eye.
"You are fine?" he asked.
At your nod, he couldn't help but smile.
"You are with child?"
Your lips parted as you stared at him. He knew. He knew, and he had come to rescue you. Uhtred was rescuing you. You nodded once more, and the man met you where you stood, his arms wrapping around you. He pressed a soft kiss to your forehead, unable to stop himself from smiling.
"Let us leave," he said. "We have a long journey back to Coccham."
"Coccham, my Lord?" you question, looking up at him curiously.
He smiled. "I do believe it proper for a woman to find comfort in her time of need," he said. "I plan to see it through."
You fought the tears that sprung to your eyes as you buried your face in the confines of his chest.
He rubbed circles on the small of your back, smile disappearing as he stood there, holding you.
“You were not going to tell me?” he softly asked, peering down at you.
Your head tilted back, eyes locking with his. “When the time was right. I would have.”
“And you are lying to me?” he raised an eyebrow as he spoke, lips pursing together.
You fought the urge to roll your eyes, heat blossoming on your face as you pulled away from him.
“May we leave, my Lord?” you asked, holding out your hand to take ahold of his. “I am growing quite tired of these quarters.”
He chuckled softly and took your hand in his. “Yes. We’ve much to discuss on the way.”
The sight of your friend was a beautiful thing, indeed—up until the realization that she told Uhtred the one secret you had begged her to keep.
“Eadith!” you exclaimed, pulling your hand away from the careful hold of Uhtred.
He just watched with a smile as you went to your friend, looking towards his own.
“You’re to be a father, then, hm?” Finan grinned, slapping his shoulder as he spoke.
“Not for the first time,” Osferth interjected, arms crossed over his chest. But he smiled at the man, nonetheless.
“Will you marry her, Lord?” Finan asked as Sihtric came over to the bunch, wiping dried blood off of his face with a damp cloth.
“If she’ll have me,” Uhtred said.
Sihtric rolled his eyes, a scoff escaping him. “You’ve to hear the way she talks with Eadith. She will have you. No question, Uhtred.”

amy and danny are really just the hanif abdurraqib quote, "there is intimacy in the moment where the eyes of two enemies meet. there is a tenderness in knowing what desire ties you to a person, even if you spent your dreaming hours cutting them a casket from the tree in their mother’s front yard. it is a blessing to know someone wants a funeral for you."

So busy lately. Working again after 3 1/2 years of not being able to because of a medical condition I had that required to different surgeries. If feels really good to be back to normal. I enjoyed this year’s 2023 Oscars show. I have to say the best in years. I loved a lot of the movies that were nominated so that obviously made a difference. Happy for all the Oscar winners and even the ones that were just nominated. I will probably be making posts about it in the next couple of days and then can’t wait to see Sam’s new movie. Also, for The Last Kingdom movie on Netflix and Season 7 of Outlander to come out soon. Sorry I’ve been MIA lately from tumblr but the Outlander fandom here on tumblr can be too negative at times and it was affecting my health! I feel so much better now. Plus, tumblr has been messing with my notifications and I haven’t been receiving them or some of my DM messages either. It can be very annoying. Oh, congratulations to Graham McTavish and his new bride on their lovely wedding! I love them both!!!
My favorite new couple and they are engaged too. Alexander Dreymon and Allison Williams. 💕💕💕They stunned on the Oscars carpet. Absolutely gorgeous! 🤩🤩
So cute! 🥰🥰 The best dressed and hottest couple at the 2023 Oscars Awards Show. ❤️🔥🔥😍😍
Exquisitely beautiful!!!
Loved her pink gown!!! 💖 It was perfect 👌🏻

Congratulations on so many followers! Maybe a Uhtred x reader with the prompt either “I think I’m being followed” or “I can’t help you if you don’t talk to me, love” thank you
i slightly changed the phrasing, but the idea remains! thank you ♡ also, sorry for doing this after the event.
He could have seen the worry on your face from a mile away—the way your eyebrows pinched together, your lips set in a deep frown. The way your body tensed as you walked towards his men, hands gripping onto your shirt in a nervous manner.
Sihtric and Finan continued their teasing conversation with the baby monk while Uhtred stepped away from them, chin held high as he watched you.
The closer you got, the more you looked over your shoulder—right up until you were in front of him, eyes wide and heart pounding in your chest.
"Lord Uhtred," you said, coming to a stop in front of him.
He tilted his head, a soft smile forming on his lips. He loved getting to see you; any time made his heart feel a little lighter, and his step a little faster.
But when you didn't return his smile, his own fell.
He said your name softly, looking over your shoulder. Nothing was out of the ordinary. Were you feeling well?
You looked over your shoulder once more, taking one more step towards Uhtred.
"My lord," you began, but stopped yourself, eyebrows furrowed in frustration.
"I cannot help you if you do not talk to me, love," he softly spoke, his voice low just for your ears.
Eyes growing wide, you looked back up at him.
"I... do not mean to... to sound paranoid, but I believe I'm being followed."
His solemn expression immediately fell. "Are you sure?"
"Yes," you said. "But... I... I do not know where they went."
"Well," he said, reaching out his hand to you. "Come. Stay with me for the evening."
You hesitantly reached forward and took his hand.
"If I see the person..."
"Tell me," Uhtred said. "I will make sure he pays."
With a small nod, you squeezed his hand. Uhtred smiled and pulled you towards him, leading you to his group of merry men. At least there, you'd be safe. He'd deal with whatever scum scared you, later.

on 'aldhelm's wardrobe' & tlk costumes
[this post contains my opinion, and it might not align with yours. it is fine as long as we are respectful. keep that in mind, thank you]
[around 1.5k words]
as one can see, i’ve been posting a lot [and more to come lol] about Aldhelm’s wardrobe lately, and i want to clarify something: i post mainly because i enjoy the character, and i’m utterly stunned by Aldhelm having such a chokehold on me [yes, at some point you might say that i was simply gifing him, and you will be correct]. but i have to say: those posts are not an appreciation for the well-done costumes, because...well, i was genuinely disappointed by how poorly they were made. but why is it important? [NB: i'm not an expert; it was just details that i noted from the perspective of a person who likes this stuff].
part I: let’s focus on Aldhelm first [i promise, it’s about costume design and its influence on a character’s development!]
if you go through my tags for those posts, you can see that sometimes i leave notes of what i have noticed so far. the latest set was for one of the first fits that we encountered with Aldhelm. many didn’t like his blue ragged cloak, and so do i, because i don’t find it appealing or flattering.
but it makes sense: Aldhelm is still relatively young, probably isn’t that wealthy as later in the series, and he is dressed for the road and any occasions [robbery, scuffle, etc.] that might occur. so, i find this cloak rather suitable for a young man who is still making his way in a career as a warrior and advisor. that way, you can clearly see that his position within the hierarchy is lower, especially when he is side by side with Aethelred. later in the series [around s3], we’ll see him wearing another bluish cloak made from a sturdier fabric with a rolled edge [no doubt, a boy got a promotion]. even his court mercian outfit [that i haven’t gifed it yet] looks considerably less prominent than Aethelred’s, and that’s the point [though why Aldhelm’s is brighter i would never get]. it is a simple tunic with and a god-knows-what sleeveless garment [write me if you know what the hell it is] without any embroidery. again, later, the outfit changes, and Aldhelm is serving the look with that collar embroidered with golden leaves. the outfit underlines his status and signals to the viewers that the character has undergone some changes. above that, we are getting small details that reveal the character [examples: the length of his mail in comparison to Aethelred's, the short knife in addition to his sword, which is a common thing but again cannot be seen on Aethelred, and even if he has one, it’s unlikely to be used as anything but adornment].
thus, you can see my point: a costume is important.
but it’s not only about what it consists of but also how it was executed. spoiler—badly.
most of Aldhelm’s silhouettes are simply ill-suited for him, and he is painful to look at in this respect. his tunics are more than always way too short for him because of how tall and lanky this man is, and the brooch attached so high and in the middle creates a puffy look but makes him seem fettered and tighter in the shoulders, as if the garment is too small for him. the 2nd outfit [in order of appearance in the text] is clearly made out of cotton [which is not available at the set time period] and has the weirdest texture that again won’t be easily achievable. his chainmail? at a closer look, you can see how poorly, almost haphazardly, rings are connected to each other; moreover, it doesn’t even look like a proper sturdy iron or steel. the embroidery on his collar and the hems on the shoulders are made by machine [and that’s okay! not everything has to be made by hand in order to preserve accuracy, but leave small details for viewers to believe it was actually made by hand! a few sticking threads? amazing. uneven pattern on the embroidery? wonderful]. and where is his pouch? more complicated buckles, anyone? finally, the thing I hate the most: s5 and Aldhelm becoming yet another leather man. *cries in mercian*
if we follow the tendency of elaborating the outfit within the character’s development, then we would want to see in s5 that Aldhelm’s wardrobe to be more well-put, restrained, but bold in colours and high-status style that would be perfectly fitted for his age and position [think somewhat of lord Odda s1]. fitted my ass, we didn’t even get an updated version of the mercian look. ideally something like a long blue linen tunic with golden threads along the edge and a yellow wool wrap-over coat with decorated cuffs [the guy is loaded, he can afford it, come on]. but nope, just another leather waistcoat. yeah, yeah, there was that dirty-red-coloured cloak, but I won’t buy it, underneath it was something I cannot even come up with a name for.
phew, we get to the others. my leather-pretty boys!
part II: Let’s talk colours and materials.
why is this show so bloody dark? i am not only complaining as a gifmaker, but as a viewer: yes, i want to be able to see what is happening on the screen! i'm more than sure they use some sort of god-forbidden filter, and everything looks so dreary and bleak cause there is no sunshine in Wessex, you know.
the same goes for clothes’ colours. why is every item either black, or gray, or any other dirty-washed colour? people in the 9th century had natural dyes, garments had colours, especially if we are talking about someone wealthy. we have a lot of manuscripts and pictures that show it! bright yellow, deep blue, bold red, olive, and many others were available. why are even members of the royal family dressed mostly in gray? yes, we’ve seen Alfred rocking some red, but still, it was awfully plain.
speaking about rock, have you, guys, ever thought why heavy metal groups are popular in the North? It cause all Danes were wearing leather while pillaging and plundering Saxon villages. duh.
so, yeah, even if we want them to look super broody and cool, leather was not very common as an everyday material to wear. nor was it suitable for a battle as a whole garment. or are you going to tell me that it is so convenient to sweat the shit out of yourself in summer and freeze to hell in winter while wearing your trendy sleeveless vest [yes, i am looking at you, Sihtric]. don’t you want to protect your arms at all? not even a bit? i have a nice linen or wool shirt that you can wear underneath. no? okay. i'm more than sure that one can achieve a great look using the correct materials. but what do i know? [let’s ask king Constantine of Scots who wears this tartan picnic blanket that looks like a rug from Ikea. or Brida, her jacket from Zara, those awfully sewn squares of fur from s1].
and my, oh my, how ‘historical’ dramas are terrified of headgear. especially the female ones. i haven’t seen a veil, a headscarf, or anything else that would have been appropriate for the time, specifically for married women. other adornments or jewels? have you seen Aethelflaed’s crown? it’s supposed to be golden and decorated with precious stones, but it looks like an easily flexible piece of tin. and I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one who saw that Aelfwynn was wearing temple rings instead of the actual earrings [even though we have preserved examples of real earrings that were common in the period].
so, what do we have? awfully combed Vikings in leather with modern hairdos, inappropriate shapes and materials, and poorly made garments. is it really that important?
instead of a conclusion:
personally, i think yes. i'm a historical fashion enthusiast, and i do love great costumes that represent time periods correctly. to my mind, it is significant because most people would never search for real studies on the subject and would just believe things they saw on screen. and that’s the problem that will cause a lot of stereotypes and wrong perceptions of history and the people in it.
when we create something that is history-based [i am not talking about fantasy; play however you like with clothes there, i will only support] we have to remember that those were real people as well. they differed by status, but they still wanted to look good, ate well, didn’t like to get wet, quarrelled with their siblings while they were teenagers, and played with their dogs. they wanted to be warm, so they wore wool; they wanted to feel fresh while working in the field, so they used linen. they wanted to appeal to their potential partners, so they adorned themselves with embroidery, jewels, headpieces, and small accessories. they were humans that shouldn’t be looked upon as inferiors, but those [as they portrayed them to be] small details that were overlooked created truly Dark Ages.
so, yeah, costume design is important; characters speak through it.
thank you, if you've read this post.
