After being absolutely screwed over by the supernatural finale, I gotta say I really did like the Manifest finale. It wasn't perfect but it was pretty well done.

Spoilers below

I totally shipped benvi as a couple but it's also very understandable that they would not be endgame. That being said, their chemistry was off the charts and I'm so glad for ALL their scenes together in 4B.

I'm also really happy with how Michaela's story ended because yeah Zeke is the person she would choose every single time.

Yeah the TJ and Olive thing became a little weird because of the whole going back in time thing with her being a child thing but I think they handled it in a non creepy way by making him move on. At least he'll remember all the time they had together.

Saanvi, my beloved Desi bisexual icon, she's always been my favourite character and this season too she didn't disappoint. Of course, I really wish she'd gotten more screentime (she wasn't there in an ENTIRE episode), but it did feel like she was treated like the main character that she is.

I know a lot of people cringe at the mad love line but I thought it was pretty sweet.

I loved how they kept the found family theme right to the end, *cough* take notes supernatural *cough* and I loved how every single character interacted with each other this season. The hugs, the heartfelt conversations, it was so so sweet to watch.

There'll probably be some discourse about how the ending erased the entire series but I don't think that's true. Because there are some who forgot but there are still some that remember. I think all the passengers will continue to keep in touch and as for Cal and Olive, they get to have a redo without all of the death and pain clouding their lives. They get their parents back and more importantly they get their childhood back.

PS : I've also personally never understood the Grace hate. She is literally out there living her life and loving her family and getting stuff done.

I think I have a superpower

So the buck being bi thing just made me realize something. I think I have a superpower. I just started watching the series as it comes out this season right, well this season is when they made buck canonically bi. This has happened before for me. I started watching supernatural as it came out on the last season. They made Cas and Dean Canon in the last season. I started watching teen Wolf as it came out on the last season, They made Lydia and stiles canon in the last season. I started watching Andy Mack in the last season. They made Cyrus and TJ canon in the last season. It’s happened other times too but those are the times it happened with the BIGGEST ships.

As Nova read the text, she let out a heavy sigh. At least someone is having fun. She only reacted with a heart, at least he said he loved her. He doesn't mean an actual fox does he?

Several hours later

As Nova changed into one of TJ's shirts and pants, she was watching Kamen Rider Gaim on the screen. For some reason she kept rewinding.

You're a fool who can't do anything for yourself. And you'll always be no matter what you do.

It reminded her too much of the inner monologue inside her head. The one triggered by those supernaturals she refused to acknowledge. Nova found herself siding with the villian this time.

"You're the one who pushed him." Nova hissed. "You made him this way." Was she talking about the man on her screen or herself. Without much thought the potted plant beside her broke the soil pouring out.

There was a gasp before she looked up. When she saw her boyfriend near the door she stood and wordlessly hugged him.

"Don't you ever scare me like that again Taejin!"

Currently reading: technically, In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune and Something Wild and Wonderful by Anita Kelly but I haven’t made much progress past the “I need to learn about new characters” hump yet.

Currently watching: always Schitt’s Creek and also working my way through a rewatch of the first five seasons of Supernatural. I’ve been trying to watch Fellow Travelers but the fucking paramount app is the worst.

Now that I've started reading Art Adore En (Hin & Phayu's novel) and Chains of Heart, I understand even less why they decided to include every single couple from the author's book universe. Yes, they're all friends, but honestly apart from maybe Boon the story would have worked just as well without including at least 33452 dudes in suits.

Unless they're supposed to be an easter egg for fans of the novels? Or maybe the production company plans on expanding the universe? Which is hilarious because there's already two different series planned from different companies with different actors but the same characters (it's confusing for me, too).

So in order not to lose my mind, I tried to figure out who is who in the show. Which is torture. You guys, I am faceblind. I know who they are by name but I can't tell them apart when they're standing next to each other.

Anyway, here goes...

This is Boon. He's a police inspector and I think he used to be Hin's senior (and code brother?) at university. He has two people working under him and they're also part of their uni friend group. One of them is Ae (who's a different Ae from the Ae who's Chief Ingpha's sister).

And I think these are Pleng, Phrai, Mangpor and Safe. Don't ask me who is who. Three of them are the same height. Please send help.

Pleng And Phrai (the show has him as Plary but uhmmmm that's not what the messages say) are the main characters in Love Puzzle. Pleng is Hin's best friend and Phrai is his boyfriend.

Mangpor means scorpion (I know because the auto-translate translated every name and let me tell you it was really confusing reading about scorpions and rocks and storms and sand and soil... and opium). Could be he's also a police officer because he's always mentioned alongside Boon and Ae in the novel.

Then there's Safe. He's the first friend Hin made at university. He's Mangpor's boyfriend because EVERYONE here has a boyfriend.

Here's where it gets weird.

All of TJ Tommys' novels are connected but most of them are different genres. Chains of Heart is a crime thriller, Art Adore En and Love Puzzle are university-themed, and these guys have a supernatural/reincarnation storyline:

Guy (left) is a doctor and Nott (right) is... idk but he can apparently predict the future. They also remember their past lives, and they're boyfriends (naturally).

When Ken was found two years ago, Hin asked Nott about what he saw in Ken's future and Nott cryptically answered that he didn't see Ken with Din. He saw Ken with someone familiar who he couldn't reach and someone unfamiliar who seemed strangely close.

...

Just be glad that Waranyu and Palang haven't shown up yet (or maybe they have. We'd never know. There's a seemingly endless amount of boyfriends in this show), because Waranyu is some kind of soul guide and can communicate with ghosts. Which he does (in an extra chapter of Chains of Heart).

That leaves Yuji. Yuji might be with Ae because he's the only other person not paired up with anyone (??). I don't have a screencap of Yuji because I'm not even sure he's in the show. He's the same age as Phayu and Ken and he definitely pops up in the novel but I haven't even so much as heard his name in the series.

Aand that's it. The gang's all here (I think. I hope).

Now someone tell them that "worrying for your friend" doesn't mean "secretly watch his every move" but something more like "hey maybe you shouldn't wallpaper your hotel room with your deceased boyfriend's face".

Um, I'm not much for angst, but I guess Stay With Me. It's SPN/Leverage, and deals with Dean's demon deal

Probably Never Sees It Coming (Stargate Atlantis)

Not really, which I appreciate.

Not at all. I write a lot of spankings though, so different kink

I love writing crossovers, and most of my fics have at least two fandoms involved. That said, the craziest one is absolutely Curse You, Steve the Seal, which is a crack drabble crossing Hawaii Five-0 with Phineas and Ferb (last time I ever ask for a fanfic prompt from someone who doesn't actually read/write fanfics.) But a close second would be Merry Christmas to All, and to All a Sore Butt, which I just finished. Leverage/White Collar/9-1-1/9-1-1 Lone Star, and an AU of two of my preexisting AUs. That was a wild ride.

Not that I'm aware of.

Don't think so, though that would be cool.

Not fanfic, no. I do have one series posted with a co-creator, but I am still waiting for said co-creator to actually co-create something instead of just throwing more prompts at me lol

Not sure? I have ships I like, ships I don't like, but I don't know. Favorite to watch is probably Tarlos and Malec (helps that they're canon lol). Favorites to write would be Eliot/Quinn/Neal and John/Evan/Cam ( I love the polyamory lol)

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Um. All the ones that I'm spending thought on, I probably will manage to finish? Otherwise I probably don't care about them enough at the moment to notice if I don't?

16. What are your writing strengths?

I love dialogue. It's so fun to just see what the hell the characters are gonna say/do next

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Description and action. I can't actually picture anything in my head, so I find myself baffled that people might actually care about what the setting looks like/what's going on

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I won't do it, because I don't speak another language well enough and I don't trust Google translate, but if need be I'll probably pull a "she said in this language." When people do put other languages in dialogue I get frustrated that I can't read it, but I also understand that that's what it's like for the characters, too, so fair enough

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

I don't even know, I love all of them. At the moment, though, I've got a fondness for both Goodnight Moon and the follow-up Goodnight Nobody. They're Bucky-TJ fics that are just kinda cute and feelsy.

🥰 The Secret Lives of Color (Kassia St. Clair, author & narrator) - {nonfiction} This was rec'd in one of my discord servers as 'If you are ever in the need for a pleasant-sounding British woman telling you Interesting Facts About Colors then may I recommend The Secret Lives of Color by Kassia St. Clair, which is exactly that for 8 hours' and it was precisely that and it was wonderful and soothing and so interesting.

🥰 MateHub: Legend (MateHub #1) (Marie Reynard) - erotic romance about a wolf shifter porn star who finds a Mate™ in his new human co-star. Tropetastic & hot af, exactly what I wanted from a book with this set up. But my fave thing was the absolutely hilarious porn star names: Richard Knotz, our main MC wolf shifter. Hunter Savage, Max Hardwood, Trick Wilde (coyote shifter, natch). I snorted with laughter every time one came up. [really love a book that just knows what it's trying to do and executes beautifully on that premise]

So when she made it out of that building and she told you to back off, that is all you should have done. Full fucking stop, Nova! What you did after that is on you. If anyone damned Nana, you did because Billie asked you and your fancy costume to walk away. I won't argue beliefs with you, but you're not gonna blame her for that. I'm not gonna stand here and listen to that. I saw her right before she left, I know what she looked like, so I know what you saw, what you ignored, what you used magic against."

Her apologies meant nothing because she didn't mean them. She wasn't sorry while she was still making excuses for her behavior. "Remember that day with TJ? The one you're apologizing for? Remember how I tried to walk away? Are you noticing a pattern between you and your beloved? Again, there's that privilege. I have tried to explain this to you so many times. The OEA wants us eradicated, it's that fancy little E in the middle of their name, and they are willing to do whatever it takes: murder, torture, experimentation, political games. They are doing it all. As a witch, you're gonna need to figure that out real quick if you're going to survive."

He was wasting breath, and maybe he couldn't get in but she couldn't get out. She made herself a little prison as long as he stood here. So he was going to stand here. The only good thing about him was Billie, but he was still no stranger to be an asshole when circumstances called for it, when making sure people who hurt her didn't come back for her.

"Maybe I should have been more succinct," he tossed back at her, as he stepped forward as close to the barrier as he could get, "and I sure hope you're listening to me." His eyes shifted into a glowing golden hue as he drew on the power from his wedding ring, and he looked directly at her. "If you lay a finger or a spell on my wife again, you better start runnin'. Not back here because this boundary won't save you then, but wherever your connections and your money can take you because I will come after you. And you will not want me to find you, do you understand?"

From one blink to the next, the shade of his eyes returned to their usual blue. "You gotta take accountability for your shit, Nova. I know you were probably thinking while you were apologizing that I wasn't going to believe you, and you're right. I don't. Because the very next breath, you're blaming Billie for reacting verbally after the hell that gala was while you reacted violently and physically. That tells me everything I need to know about what you still don't understand. I warned you about the OEA, and you didn't listen to me. You're still not listening to me, so how dare you say I'm not listening? You had the OEA escaping, but you didn't bother them. No, you came at the wounded banshee and demanded from her what you are not owed."

Exhaling, he had to stop at some point, but he had so much to say to her. So much he wanted to ask her, to understand. "But you said it better than I could: we were friends. We're not now. That has never been clearer. Hope your dream ended better than this."

❤️️: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?

My kneejerk reaction is Telford. People make (or made rather, when there were more people writing for the fandom) the actions he takes have malicious intent behind them more often than not. I reckon while the things he does might appear cruel to other characters who don't have all the facts, actually making him do things for cruelty's sake is massively OOC. He's completely goal-orientated, which means he will do awful things in order to achieve his desired outcome (e.g. I don't believe he slept with Emily because it would have been counterproductive for the message he was trying to convey, but if sleeping with her had given him the outcome he wanted he would have done it without thinking twice) but he's not going to just hurt people for the fun of it.

For SGA I have to go with Keller, with the stereotypical 'this woman is getting in the way of the popular m/m ship so it's character assassination time!' I was surprised even the Legacy books got in on it with her banning Rodney from seeing female friends after a certain time of day??? Madness. I agree with the popular opinion that she and Ronon had more chemistry and her reasoning for choosing Rodney was a bit dodgy, but it's always the same when the main m/m ship is threatened and I'm tired of it, ya know?

🧡: What is a popular (serious) theory you disagree with?

Been trying to think of a non-Telford answer, but I'm afraid I'm as just as focused on the prize as he is. 😂 I was hugely surprised to find the majority of the fandom believed that Telford slept with Emily. As I said above, I don't think it's a moral problem - he would have 100% done it if it served his purposes imo - but it seems so obvious to me watching the show that he didn't? He's trying to convince her that Young is still cheating on her, so if he waltzes in there and tries to seduce her she'll just put him in the same category as Young and he won't be trustworthy. His whole approach is to prove to her he's 'not like other men' and then she'll feel safe enough with him to believe whatever he says.

Off topic, but I wanna gush about something. Imo sleeping with Emily wouldn't have been the line the brainwashing was unable to break through, but very clearly the baby was the line, as Kiva had no clue that was Young's kid TJ was carrying while she was holding them hostage, as she was about to kill them rather than threaten Young with their deaths (which would have immediately brought the situation to a close lbr). She said she'd read extensive reports on everyone aboard Destiny (which is why she knew Greer wasn't a medic and it was a trap), but Telford clearly hadn't told her about the baby's parentage! Not even the brainwashing could make him do that!

For SGA, I can't actually think of one? I'm not as involved in the SGA community so maybe I'm missing something obvious?

💔: If you had to remove one major character from the series, who would you choose?

Have to admit I'm not terribly keen on Eli. Big 'ah yes this character will be a favourite amongst our Target Audience' energy, because even when there's every recorded statistic to the contrary, many writer's rooms will absolutely flat out refuse to stop feeding themselves the lie that their show is being watched by a majority audience of men. *cough cough* Supernatural

Unpopular opinion ask game

Hey hi howdy hi if you have like a list of queer fantasy books you liked would it be alright if you shared them? i’m so low on spoons but would love to read some happy stuff if you’ve got any recs, all good if not! was just curious!

OK so I've got a couple things, but depending on what you mean by "happy", some might count and some might not, so I'm gonna group them by like "Happy/Feelgood" for the really sweet stuff vs "I wouldn't say they're "Feelgood' kind of warm-fuzzy, or at least they aren't entirely that, but they're def Hopeful at their core". (i tend to lean more towards things that have Angst even if the core is hopeful. i could list a lot more in the Mixed But Hopeful section, but i tried to stick to ones that felt more 'energetic' in tone, if that makes sense)

Feelgood

House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune. Lonely man gets assigned to assess the "safety" of a boarding house for kids with supernatural powers and learns to enjoy life along the way.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. Trans latino boy performs a magic ritual to prove himself to his family and ends up having to help a ghost move to the afterlife. This one is YA, so might not be your thing but I thought it was really cute and fun. Does include some elements of transphobia, but the overall tone of the story is cute and heartfelt, and the transphobia bits are resolved positively. Lots of emphasis on self acceptance and family.

Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree. Orc woman retires from fighting and opens a coffeeshop. This one didn't particularly do it for me, but I know a lot of people like it so you might also.

Hopeful at their Core

Witchmark by CL Polk. Mage who works as a doctor meets a mysterious man and ends up investigating a murder while trying to help his patients suffering from a mysterious illness. Deals with abusive family backgrounds but is overall pretty lighthearted/energetic.

Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell. Arranged marriage in an intergalactic empire gets complicated when half of the pair's previous relationships and potential criminal activity come to light. Feels pretty fanfic-y (i say as someone who doesnt really read fanfic, so take with a grain of salt) in a fun way. Deals with past relationship abuse, but isnt graphic and is overall pretty lighthearted and fun

The Last Sun by KD Edwards. Disgraced Atlantean noble and his life companion/best friend/bodyguard get hired to search for a missing person, only to get entangled with a legendary monster connected to the fall of said noble's court 15 years prior. YMMV with this one cause it deals with a lot of heavy stuff like abuse and sexual assault and gets pretty dark at points, but at the same time the series is really funny, the banter is so good, and it has some of the best and most fun found family dynamics going on in like anything I've read or watched. #2) Emotional/Moral Weak Spots

-Conner's need to flirt with girls mainly boils down to a deep feeling of having to show off some sort of assertiveness or masculinity that he feels insecure about. It actually made him ask a few fearful questions that he's been dreading whenever they appear in his mind, does he like guys? The thought of it honestly scares him to death because of all the outcomes that can occur like his parents kicking him out but talking to Kira helps, now Conner's pretty alright with his preferences.

-His parents tend to disapprove about his soccer hobbies and constantly compare him to his twin brother Eric. Even though Eric doesn't try much he's always preferred instead of Conner, at five years old Conner broke his ankle and had to work really hard to get it back in mint condition for soccer, one of the worst periods of his early years so when someone insults his skills or interests it can really cause him to shut down or lash out. Is he good enough? Can he actually live up to his dreams? Why can't his own parents actually find some ounce of love for what he does?

-He really hates having to talk about his feelings with his friends because he becomes a tearful mess and it takes a few hours to really unpack everything, can't let anyone see him as such. Even in college he struggles with opening up like this unless he's with the other rangers, he's the red ranger but the others remind him that letting your pain out is not a weakness

#5) Guilty Pleasures

-Leather jacket collecting is a big hobby for Conner overall, his closet is mostly filled with antique pieces from the 80s.

-He really loves to give and receive hugs, being the tallest amongst his teammates really gives him the advantage but in secret Conner wishes to be a bit shorter just to be on the receiving end. Whether they like each other or not Conner might hold Ethan and Trent from behind while they are doing stuff like drawing or coding, when the red rangers met up he tried doing the same but only Andros, Leo, Wes and Cole obliged. Tommy pulled Jason out the window before it happened, TJ isn't that casual, Ryan wouldn't let him go near Carter and Eric doesn't do physical contact.

-He loves boyband songs and has Devin going out of his way to find rare tapes and CDs to listen to.

-Conner really loves reading dictionaries, it's a weird hobby but just going over any type of word on a daily basis really gets his mind running. Sometimes to keep calm through the day theres an audio book installed on his phone just for this specific moment.

-Conner watches Supernatural religiously, he thinks Sam is kinds hot because they both got good looks, Hayley took him to meet the actors and he nearly fainted in Jared's presence.

#20) What-If/Alternate Timelines

-Mesogog was created via Tommy being his other half instead of Anton within this timeline, Anton is the mentor but to combat a threat that has access to ranger knowledge he augmented the Dino Gems bringing out their latent potential. However Anton doesn't know how to keep stability in the team and during a huge conflict with Mesogog the rangers powers went off causing another asteroid like impact to strike the world, it didn't cause much casualties but the energy brought back the dinosaurs. Mesogog being destroyed led to the team taking free reign of the new world, Conner being a ruler with a kingdom of meat eating dinosaurs.

-Semi medieval verse where he started off as a gymnast but became a wandering jester with his flexibility to entertain and make a hefty profit. Slowly getting shafted alongside a small band, Ethan the sorcerer, a Kira the bard, a Trent the Renaissance artist and Tommy the sellsword as they all journey the land for adventure.

-in a powerless universe he's a director after high school, he retired soccer after college despite people wanting to scout him out. Conner, Trent, Kira and Ethan live together, working on a crazy popular series of heroes. Conner being the full on director, Ethan handles animation and tech stuff, Kira does the score and soundtrack and Trent is the mangaka/comic artist who likes to take hiatuses and delay the series for laughs.

-Becoming a ranger really opened Conner's eyes to a whole new world. Sure power rangers are common knowledge within his world but being a part of the adventures, supernatural and magical situation, fighting monsters and doing things that a normal human can't just makes him feel like a kid again.

-Hayley is like the mother Conner wishes he had, considering she's very caring and actually willing to listen to his concerns.

-Eric might get all the attention but Conner couldn't imagine his life without him, from age one to five Eric had some heart troubles and there wasn't a guarantee that he'd survive. Conner never left his side and even refused to go to school, got to the point where he had to repeat a grade or two but luckily Eric made it and the twins were able to stick together without hardships.

So TJ tends to not get enough sleep. Even with his ability not giving him many choices but to sleep, it's still like 4-5 hours max some days. TJ won't do anything dangerous like go to a fire of course but he will just overwork himself cleaning the station or something of that nature. Time & Space Colliding

Chapter 1

“Oops.” The word stumbled out of her mouth as she landed looking up and seeing a man on a skateboard coming straight towards her. With no time to react, she braced herself for impact.

         Glancing up in time to see her he quickly shifted his weight causing the skateboard to skid to a stop. Their bodies collided as he rotated, catching her as they fell to the ground.

         “Shiznits…” his voice came out airy as he untangled his limbs from hers, his gaze wandering over her body, “I’m sorry…are you hurt?”

         Her response started with a giggle as she took his hand and recovered to her feet, dusting herself off, “shiznits…what year are we in? I’m quite all right, thank you.”

         “Glad you’re okay, I’m usually a lot more careful around here with all the foot traffic.”

         “Where exactly are we? I was trying to make it to 12th and Rowe…”

         His right eyebrow curved up at her remark, his eyes taking in her twisted dark auburn side braid and her ocean jasper eyes. Something about her caught him off guard, maybe it was the olive-green jumpsuit she wore, the way she talked, or the way she seemed to come out of nowhere. “It’s actually a few blocks that way…” He paused and pointed across the street, “Three blocks that way then one block left…you’ll cross over the train tracks and go one more block before taking a left.”

         “Thank you,” she smiled and looked over her shoulder in the direction he gestured.

         “I’m Terrence…Terry…my friends call me TJ.”

         She glanced back at him and noticed his extended hand. “Deni…CJ..."

         His brows furrowed together as a quirky smile broke across his face, lighting up his dark brown eyes. “Let me walk you…that side of town isn’t the safest…I’m assuming you’re not from around here Deni…CJ?”

         “Just popped in for a quick trip. And you don’t have to I’m sure I’ll be all right.”

         “I insist,” he started walking carrying his skateboard in his left hand, Deni following slightly behind on his right.

         “I like your jumpsuit…it’s different.”

         “This old thing…” She twisted as she tugged at the zipper and pulled the sleeves off, tying them around her waist, revealing a dark grey tank. “Didn’t realize it was going to be so hot here.”

         The more she spoke the more he found himself enamored with her.

         “I like your flannel,” Deni said giving him the one over. He wore a white shirt, blue jeans, and had a grey-blue flannel wrapped around his hips. TJ gave her nostalgic 90s vibes and made her question what era they were in.

         “Thanks…it was my dad’s.”

         Her eyes searched his momentarily, “Was? As in he passed?”

         TJ nodded.

         “Sorry for your loss.”

         “What about your parents?”

         Instead of answering she gave a nonchalant shrug as they crossed over the second block nearing the train tracks.

         “You’re not much for talking about yourself?

         “There’s not much to say about me…”

         “Got nothing? Not even where you’re from? What you do? Favorite color?”

         “Purple.” Smiling she glanced from him to the sidewalk, “what about you?”

         “Not to sound super corny but your eyes are very unique…Swear I’m not hitting on you…maybe I am.” His laugh was carefree, “No just haven’t seen eyes that color before…reminds me of this jasper ring my grandma had. Beautiful green and blue, like the ocean.”

         Deni found herself blushing, “That’s quite the compliment. What were you listening to?” She glanced back up at him.

         “Here,” he pulled the headphones from around his neck and handed them to her as he hit play.

         Immediately the music started playing and she couldn’t resist the way it made her want to sway. As the lyrics started, she found herself walking and twirling to the rhythm. “We get it almost every night. And when that ol’ moon gets big and bright it’s a supernatural delight. Everybody was dancing in the moonlight…”

         TJ found himself grinning uncontrollably watching her feel and enjoy the music. It seemed to free and loosen her. When the song came to an end, she turned to him beaming, her eyes shimmering.

         “Thank you. I haven’t heard that one before I really rather enjoyed it.”

         Laughing he took his headphones back peeling his eyes from hers, trying hard not to get lost in them, “Well she likes music…Do you have a favorite song or artist?”

         Deni was walking slightly ahead of him now and he watched as her shoulders shrugged again. After a moment she glanced back at him pausing to let him match her pace.

         “I enjoy experiencing new things.” She glanced around their surrounding and stopped in front of what looked to be an old pawn shop.  The store itself had black paper over the windows and looked dim inside. “Here we are. I appreciate you escorting me, I very much enjoyed your company TJ.”

         He bit his lip momentarily thinking and gathering up his courage. “Deni it was very nice to meet you.” Pausing he shook his head slightly, his eyes never wavering from hers, “You’re someone I’d like to get to know more.”

         The genuine smile that spread across her face and lit up her eyes seemed to warm the space between them. “I’d like that…” she pulled her gaze away and glanced at her off-brand grey sneakers as she bounced on her heels. “But I’m not here long, I’ll be leaving soon after this stop.”

         “I figured…what are you doing in there anyway…Seems sketch?”

         “You ask a lot of questions.” At that, she turned and walked inside. The glass door made a thud as it shut behind her.

         Her sudden disappearance left him stunned and he stared after her, the warmth of her presence gone with her leaving a chill over him. TJ shook his head in disbelief wondering if all that had just transpired had really happened, something about it felt more like a daydream than reality. After a few moments, he finally forced himself to turn and head back.

         Two steps and a bang erupted from behind him, it sounded like gunfire but different. His heartbeat thudded in his ears as he stepped back towards the shop knowing for sure it had come from inside. There was a sudden bright flash from inside the door and then darkness. Instinct rather than logic had him pulling the door open and crouching through glancing around for Deni.  Seeing no immediate threat to himself and no sign of Deni he quickly looked around the clearly vacant and ancient shop. Empty counters separated him from the back of the shop. Old newspapers and trash littered the floor, dust caked the walls and counters, and danced through the little daylight that trickled in.

TJ quickly searched around for the girl that had moments before seemed to touch his world and then vanish. Was it just a dream? Rounding one of the counters he found her laying across the floor clutching her side and struggling to breathe. Her eyes clenched shut in apparent pain.

“Deni,” he whispered urgently dropping to her side.

Her eyes flung open, and worry filled them, “You’re not supposed to be here…what are you doing here?”

“I heard something and was concerned you were in trouble. Shit…you’re bleeding.” His brow furrowed together; his eyes darkened with emotion.

“You need to go.”

He ignored her as he whipped off his flannel and pressed it against her gaping wound.

“Terr…no…” her voice caught in between her jagged breaths, “Your flannel.”

“Shhh. Come on. My sis works at a clinic not far from here.”

At first, she went to protest but his serious gaze and her weakened state caused her to give in.  He quickly picked her up, his arms cradling her tightly against him, as he hurried back out the door and to his right up the street.

Busting through the clinic doors, Deni was unconscious but breathing, TJ breathing heavily fought to find his voice as Edith glanced up from the desk.      

“Mira…”

Edith was already up and moving towards the doors to the exam area, “Bed 3 is empty. I’ll grab Mira.”

By the time he had laid her down on the gurney, Mira had rounded the corner. “TJ what’s…” Seeing the dire situation she zipped her lip as she quickly assessed the girl’s condition. Edith helped to get vitals on the girl as Mira addressed the wound, “What happened TJ?”

“I have no clue sounded like a gunshot but doesn’t look like a GSW.”

“Haven’t seen anything like this. Thankfully it looks like even though the wound is deep there is no serious damage.” Mira stitched the wound, “Edith I want whatever tests we can run.” She glanced at the girl’s vitals once more, “She seems to be rebounding quickly so…” she paused glancing back around, “Tj…” her hands reached for the blood-soaked flannel. “You did good…she could have lost a lot more blood…I’ll see if Patty can get the blood out of this for you.” Her voice was soft as she glanced up at him. “Who is she?”

“Her name’s Deni…CJ. I don’t know just met her today. She asked for directions and then…I don’t know what happened.”          “What do you know?”

He found himself shrugging as he glanced over at Deni and then back to his sister, “I think she’s alone…”

Mira’s eyes softened and she nodded knowingly. “You can stay with her. We will run these tests and monitor her vitals. I can’t keep her overnight…you know…but once I’m sure she’s stable you can take her to Stanley’s for the night. I’ll be there tonight so I can keep an eye on her.”

“Thank you, Mira.”

Hours ticked by as Terrence watched over Deni anxiously. His sister and Edith kept an eye on vitals and ran tests. When she finally stirred, he jumped to her side grabbing hold of her hand without thinking. Her eyes struggled to open and adjust to the lights.

“Terrence?” her magical eyes seemed somewhat dimmer than he remembered as she blinked at him.

“You’re safe. Mira, my sister took care of you. You should be good to go soon.”

He watched her eyes search the room and then land on his hand clasped around hers. TJ went to pull away suddenly, feeling like he had crossed a line. Her grip tightened on his, and he glanced from her hand back to her eyes. They were closed. He watched her swallow and struggle to form words.

“TJ…I’m scared.”

In response, he squeezed her hand. “I’m right here, Deni…you can rest. I’ll be here.”

She nodded slightly, gently squeezing his hand in gratitude. He watched as her breathing evened out and became soft as she fell asleep again.

Mira cleared her throat from behind him and he turned around. Something about the way she looked at him made him uncomfortable, then she motioned for him to step outside the room.

Nearing her she spoke softly, “she’s healing quickly…she should be good to go soon. Her blood results have left me with more questions than answers though…” her eyes danced from his to the girl laying there. “And the way she’s healed.”

“What do you mean?”

Mira shook her head softly and her eyes seemed distant, “I’m not sure…doesn’t really make sense…I’ll give her some more time to rest and call Stanley to come to pick you two up. I’ll discharge her in an hour or so.” There was a long pause before Mira turned then stopped again and looked over her brother, “Be careful TJ…I know you and I resonate with people that are on their own…but you need to be careful.” She chewed on her lip as she held his gaze pleadingly.

“I know and I am Mira…I promise.”
