6882. Since Starfire and Raven didnât spend their childhoods on Earth, they tend to be clueless to certain pop culture references.

Just reread a fanfiction that I haaaated twenty years ago when I first read it, and though I find myself not hating it As Much as I did back then (there are elements that are Good, I see now!), I'm still not fond of it. But it's mostly for characterization and worldbuilding.
~ Even before I Actually Went Neopagan, I was miffed at Azar scoffing at other religious beliefs. At the time I was like "Azar was a good person! She wouldn't be bigoted like that!" (Colored more by fondness for Azar over the way she seemed to treat Raven decently. I was like 10 years old when I first read this thing and Didn't Want to Entertain Her Having Flaws.)
Now I just think she wouldn't care enough to scoff at xmas? Maybe she'd be like "When you came to Azarath you swore to leave your old life behind" or something, but not like... leveraging letting Arella celebrate it as a bargaining chip???
~ The take on Azarathean religion never sat well with me. It's hard to quantify (especially now, today, when I've just finished my sixth event of socializing on 30 days, which happened while I'm barely recovered from my stomach Being Awful^tm and I'm mentally exhausted). But Azar was both the High Priestess AND the one they were following / worshiping. She was their matriarch. Her Word was Law. Her citing a Higher Power being the reason she did what she did with Raven just feels... weird to me. Seemed to be conflating it a lot with xtianity, despite her spitting on xmas. Even used capitalized-g God. That's SO mostly unique to Abrahamic religions!
~ This one was there when I was a kid but has only grown STRONGER! I really don't understand why the entire fandom is CONVINCED that ALL OF AZARATH is emotionless and every bit as strictly disciplined as Raven? Like?? That training was specific TO RAVEN. Raven was the ONLY PERSON in Azarath who had to control her emotions or destroy worlds. Sure, I believe they had SOME meditations and scheduled prayer time, theocratic societies usually do. I believe they studied mental discipline for how to uphold peace and not give in to violence and fear. But not strict, emotionless, absolutely-eradicating-all-emotions training. That was RAVEN. Just RAVEN!
Why are people so convinced that The Entire Society functioned the way they trained RAVEN?????? They lacked compassion and violent urges, but that doesn't mean they lacked other aspects of humanity like rage and fear. Those were Very Much There. That doesn't mean they didn't get to enjoy their food, or they all had to live an ascetic life. Raven being raised the way she was without any Meaningful Interpersonal Bonds (arguably, aside from Azar) doesn't mean there weren't meaningful bonds between everyone else. In fact, Arella talks about having friends that died when Trigon destroyed Azarath. In every page we've seen, the Azaratheans knew each other.
And I know, Different Canons, blah blah blah, but in the comics, Raven flat-out said something about children playing in TotNTT #2. Contrasting it against her training. Other children WERE raised DIFFERENTLY! Allowed to play! Raven wasn't because she was RAVEN!
I dunno, it's a generalization that just absolutely BAFFLES me. Maybe because I've studied enough about other religions to understand that There's Nuance and Ways to Practice Meditative Discipline Without Being Entirely Emotionless??? Maybe when other people think of monks, they don't think of Buddhism like I do, but ascetic Catholic monks? But surely even THOSE guys don't mercilessly restrict their emotions, do they???
#Nowadays there are So Many Layers of Nexus Things coloring this more than there have ever been!#NotMyAzarath#I DO sorta reject the Azarath canon described in... which one was it; Daughter of Darkness I think? The most recent miniseries?#Where she says there weren't any books and there weren't any children. Because I've spent like 20 years developing my version#where there are SO many books and there are SO many Normal Human Things like Children Existing#and also how did Gayla feed Raven without other children being in the equation? With spells? You're telling me they bespelled her breasts?#Anyways I prefer the version that has Things to Study and Azar showing Raven books and people who Were Alive and Had Something to Mourn.#But I absolutely outright ENTIRELY reject the fandom's general consensus that Azarath was as regimented and emotionless as Raven.#this has been yet another episode of ''RHS thinks way too hard about Azarath''#I should make that an Actual Tag at this point#rhs makes yet another post about teen titans#azarath#rhs personal teen titans

Titan Comics crossover miniseries The Lost Dimension takes an issue to step away from the main, NuWho centric plotline for an issue of transforming Krotons and Ogron Starfleet and personally, I think the only problem is itâs not the seriesâ main plot.

Ok rereading the titans peacemaker appearance because I skimmed it last night and just got upset
I do like this being literally the first thing he does
Heres the shit I hate. Everything else about this interaction is honestly fine and standard Peacemaker shit this just annoys the hell out of me. He would not fucking say that and theres no reason to do this besides like weird fantasy bigotry shit. I didnt include all the panels of everyone being shocked and horrified but yeah this is just Peacemaker saying dumb bullshit and everyone being like Wow I Cant Believe He Just Said That. This Guys A Monster
Also, Peacemaker is going to be showing up in like 3 different series right now and it looks like hes doing this exact same thing in all of them. Being a angry government boy and working with Amanda Waller. His green arrow appearance hasnt happened yet so Im prepared to admit I was wrong but its looking like hes just Like This Right Now and nobodys interested in him not being like this. It feels like DCâs putting him in everything because of the show but nobody wants to use him. Also Im so fucking mad tom taylor might write more of him.
#Also somehow hes shown up in everything but that blue beetle miniseries#which is FINE#Im FINE with him not being there but HES IN EVERYTHING ELSE#ITS LIKE IM BEING PUNISHED.#The one bright side here is Dick Grayson being antagonized by vigilantes has now extended to the vigilante 1983 reflections#so Blackthorn and Electrocutioner are definitely gonna show up in the next titans issue. Arm in arm#But yeah until proven otherwise Im pretending this is dorian in a rubber mask actualy#it is very stupid to me peacemaker is here yelling at the teen titans before a vigilante is.

So Iâm doing a Google News search on older Jenna Coleman articles (Iâve been having fun tracking down stories I havenât seen before as I wasnât a Jenna fan, and indeed had never heard of her, when many of these came out). In the process it flags this (not very positive tbh) review from the Boston Herald about her 2012 Titanic miniseries. It also flagged an unrelated story and so I ended up with this oddly worded result. For a second I wondered if Jenna had a new show happening!

So we have now surpassed the 96 hour "best case scenario" amount of oxygen point (if they had been alive and didnt just implode, they arent alive anymore), and I just keep thinking everything about this story, and really the story ABOUT the story, is fascinating.
Like, the situation itself has that incredible blend of tragedy voyeurism and schadenfreude that adds a level of absurdity. (The Logitech controller, the camping world lights, the fact that they probably didn't have their shoes). The way this story touches on issues of deregulation and tragedy tourism and billionaire hubris and a condemnation of wreckless start up mindsets. How much money has been spent looking for them, how much the tickets cost - the extreme absurdity of all of it.
But also the WAY this story has been covered. I keep seeing this compared to the horrific disaster in the Mediterranean this week which killed over 500 refugees and the disparity in the coverage and interest. And yeah, I think the issue is that the disaster in the Mediterranean is transparently horrific- it is a terrible tragedy, the result of systemic and complex geopolitical issues that are complex. So many people, and the weight of that is just so big. It's not funny. It's just awful.
The Ocean Gate Titan thing? It's a simple narrative that was obviously avoidable. It feels like a movie with REALLY obvious themes. It's been covered like a movie. It's been dragged out and every single possible update, the viral video of the tour of the sub, the possible noises detected by sonar, the whole side story about the billionaire step son going to the Blink 182 concert- the cast is so small and the level of abstraction away from normal people and their lives? Makes it feel completely unreal and so it can be consumed like the newest HBO miniseries.
Even now, we are getting updates on how they could stretch the oxygen out longer- like a fan theory prediction of the next episode. Like a headcanon for the season finale. (Oh God, do you think AO3 has fics yet?) Tiktokers making videos about plot holes (why not attach a tether to it?). Discourse over whether it's problematic to say one thing or another about it.
It reminds me of how it felt when the Ever Given got stuck in the Suez Canal, but with the added "oh my god, the OCEAN ate the rich" and Logitech Playstation controller jokes.
I'd put money on implosion. These men have been dead since Sunday. It's likely that we won't actually know for a long time though, if ever. But the way this story was covered is worth contemplating.

having a moment where I think about Gunn's clear de-prioritization of anything Wonderfam related in the new DCCU and getting angry again
The state of the Wonderfam in Gunn's universe:
No Wonder Woman solo movie announcement
Amazons prequel miniseries clearly de-prioritized in every way (two years with no substantive update, every other tv show has a showrunner attached except Paradise Lost, etc)
Circe nerfed in Creature Commandos
Donna Troy is probably not appearing in the recently announced Teen Titans project despite being a founding member, literally all of her development happening in Titans projects, and being the most consistent and longest-running member of the team
âŚbut yeah. Sure. Gunn cares.

Hi! Just curious, what are your favorite comic runs? I've finished the comics on my current to-read list so I love hearing what other people like!
hello! as always iâm sure iâm forgetting plenty of stuff but these are some of my favs, both completed and ongoing series.
completed:
batman: the knight (2022)
miniseries, 10 issues total, so itâs extremely readable and really satisfying in a short amount of time! i like zdarskyâs bruce a lot (iâve also enjoyed his work on the current batman run) and carmine di giandomenicoâs art is fantastic. also, itâs the ghost-maker origin story and bruce & khoa somehow get divorced at least twice before the storyâs over. love that for them.
superman: american alien (2015)
anthology collection about clark kent through the years, a really great read for supermanâdigging into clarkâs character rather than focusing on external plot!âwith some great cameos too (like young adult clark getting mistaken for some rich guy named bruce wayne at a yacht party, or reporter clark running into pre-robin dick grayson).
future state (2021) batman: dark detective
i am not immune to dan moraâs bruce wayne, especially when he is skrunkly and beat up the whole time.
batman: urban legends (2021)
an anthology so you can kind of pick up/put down as you like! these are a good read if you donât want to be tracking huge overarching plotlines for a bit. the first few issues have a great jason series too.
ongoing series aka my current pulls at the comic shop:
spirit world (2023)
this one is new and is SO fun and compelling; i love xanthe already, and the assorted cast (including constantine and cass!) and new side characters (bowen my beloved, iâd die for you if you werenât already dead) are delightful. one of those comics where iâm genuinely interested in the plot too and not just reading for my favs. alyssa wong is doing some really cool things with this concept/cast and i hope they have a chance to do way more in this world.
batman/superman worldâs finest (2022)
again, i am not immune to dan mora, or the delightful superbat of it all. (and robin!dick! i love him.) i also started reading waidâs teen titans spin-off that takes place in this same era and there are only a few issues out so far but iâm having a great time.
city boy (2023)
i am OBSESSED with this concept (sentient cities! sharp-edged/lonely character figuring out his connection to them!) and the writing is super fun so far. also the intro comic (free on kindle/elsewhere; also has a free spirit world issue) has a great nightwing run-in.
iâm also subscribed to nightwing, superboy: the man of tomorrow, action comics (anything with kon crumbsâŚ), and dark knights of steel (listenâŚi am still holding out hope for more royal court spy!tim crumbs), and i donât know much about shazam yet but iâm giving the new series a try too.
#hope thereâs something here for your reading list!#asks#comics#batman#superman#spirit world#city boy#comic rec

so i was js scrolling thru ur page and i wanted to know if you have any good starter comics abt the superfam ?
oh do i have some recs for you, my friend.
iâve already answered for kara here and made a jon reading guide here.
now onto my boy clark:
superman: birthright - itâs an origin story. great way to get introduced to the superman universe;
superman: the secret years - itâs a more old comics, but still great. revolves around clarkâs college years;
superman: kryptonite - clarkâs first encounter with kryptonite;
action comics by greg pak - itâs during the new 52 era. you can skip the unnecessary crossovers and just read his individual arcs - âaction comics (2011) #25 - 29, 35 - 40â);
superman: man of tomorrow - hero of metropolis - low stakes. slice of life. great vibes. great way to get introduced to a few superman villains;
superman by kurt busiek and geoff johns. reading guide here;
the warworld saga by phillip kennedy johnson. my favourite superman story ever;
superman smashes the klan. itâs a great story.
if you want to read superman comics chronologically, here you can find great starting points.
itâs a bit more complicated with lois because she is a second main character for a lot of clarkâs stories, but doesnât have her own titles very often (which is a shame because sheâs great!). youâd get a pretty good idea of who she is from the superman recs, but during 2019, greg rucka wrote a comic with her as the main character - âlois lane (2019)â so iâd recommend checking that out. you can also check âsupermansâs pal jimmy olsen (2019)â as well. it doesnât have lois, but it has jimmy and heâs pretty cool.
note: both kon-el and john henry irons debuted during âreign of the supermanâ storyline.
as for kon, i havenât read much of his comics, but he had a solo in the 90s and heâs a prominent member of the young justice comics so iâd recommend checking âsuperboy (1994)â and âyoung justice (1998)â. he also had a mini recently - âsuperboy: the man of tomorrowâ.
as for john and nat, john also had an ongoing in the 90s - âsteel (1994)â. nat was a main character during â52â. not sure if iâd recommend her story in that one though. but you can check it out and see if you like it. after that, she was in âinfinity inc. (2007)â which is a follow up to her 52 storyline and again, not sure how much i recommend it. as far as i know, nat was also in the titans for a bit - âtitans (2016) #23 - 36â. iâm yet to read it though so iâm not sure if itâs good. recently, there was a miniseries called âsteelworks (2023)â and it was really good. both john and nat are main characters.
lana, same as lois, unfortunately doesnât have that many solos. she was great during greg pakâs action comics run. and she had a solo during rebirth - âsuperwoman (2016)â that heavily featured john henry as well.
kenan debuted during the rebirth era and had a solo - ânew super-man (2016)â and thatâs pretty much it. he also had a two-part back up story in action comics #1058 - 1059 that explained how he joined the family.
as for lois and clarkâs kids (that arenât jon), youâll find out more about chris during kurt busiek and geoff johnsâ era and more about otho and osul during the warworld saga.
thatâs all iâve got. there are more superfamily members, but those are the once i feel confident giving recs for.

You can tell I've grown more mature as I grew older because I used to be this indignant mess of fire whenever someone suggested Raven was Doing Something Wrong.
And now I'm like. Delighted and smiling at how an entire whole page (maybe two?) was dedicated to how bad Raven is at bowling.
/hj. But only half.
#I should go on a Raven high at some point and just reread all the solo miniseries. Maybe I'll save the 2008 series for last.#Save the best for last; you know?#.........maybe later actually. Stomach's been Bad this week and every. Single. Series. has an emet trigger. XP#though the 2008 one's not Bad it's just a little mention that made me Nervous the first time I read it... but Little Moments get telescoped#when my physical body is doing its physical badness. /:P#.....do I have a personal Raven tag that's not related to the Nexus? I don't think I do. Just the basic bitch ''raven'' tag.#Which. I mean. That tag is POPULOUS on this blog! But it's weird to think I've spent 13 years rebageling Teen Titans stuff on this site#and never one made a personal tag for Raven.#raven#rhs personal teen titans#probably the closest I've got.
