Is anyone else really tired of the child soldiers reading of child heroes. Especially in superhero comics as a genre like, we have deconstructed the idea of sidekicks literally to death, the last major holdout of the sidekick trope is Robin at this point and that one's just barely hanging on. Is it really necessary to take a genre convention that was originally about children's power and escape fantasies from a media that was originally aimed at children? Is it really better to be so completely pessimistic about children to the point that a child being at all competent and able to hold their own amongst adults is more unbelievable than a friendly spaceman who flies and shoots lasers from his eyes?

Jean-Paul Valley & Azrael: Complete Reading Guide

Who is Jean-Paul Valley? / Who is Azrael?

Jean-Paul Valley first entered the post-Crisis DC Universe in the 1992 4-issue miniseries 'Batman: Sword of Azrael', written by Dennis O'Neil and penciled by Joe Quesada. A former graduate student at Gotham University, Jean-Paul's life would irreversibly change when his father would crawl to his door dying, dressed in the garb of Azrael, the Avenging Angel - an assassin for the Catholic cult Order of Saint Dumas. Thus began a series of events that would activate 'The System', conditioning that had been programmed into Jean-Paul since birth that allows he - as his father and his grandfathers before him - to give control over to the Order's personal punisher and access latent superhuman skills and abilities.

Jean-Paul and Azrael would go on to become Batman in the stead of Bruce Wayne as Bruce recovered from spinal trauma inflicted by Bane, star in their own 100-issue solo series, escape (and destroy) Jean-Paul’s father’s sect of the Order, and become members of the first iteration of what is most well known as the Bat Family until their death. They played a vital role in DC's Knightfall, Contagion, and No Man's Land story arcs.

After the New 52 reboot, they would go on to play big roles in Detective Comics: Rebirth, Justice League Odyssey, and star in a second solo miniseries. As part of the New 52 and Rebirth initiatives, Jean-Paul and Azrael's backstory and details would be changed, though as of 2022 it is implied that aspects of their New Earth origin have been re-established.

okay so i have thought about them before, even with my limited memory of ric, and now that you’ve brought them up & got me thinking about them again i’m honestly obsessed. very thematically delicious. the things joey can’t ever forget vs. the things ric can’t ever remember. i think they’d be a very comforting & loving presence for each other both trying to start over. i’ve also been in a conversation before where we were talking about bearicjoey where joey runs a hair salon specializing in gender affirming haircuts/having a safe space for queer clients & ric will hang out with him during the day so they can spend time together & also so joey can take care of him if he has a seizure (i see ric as going into early retirement from the workforce entirely as the physical toll from dick’s life hits him more & more as the years go on). bea is a bit suspicious of joey at first as she is of the other people from dick’s life but eventually she comes to understand that he truly will never force ric to try to be who he used to be even though joey desperately & painfully misses dick. as much as joey feels that way, she loves ric & the life they’re building with bea & i think bea’s ways of caring for her community are very aligned with joey’s beliefs about the good that civilians can do & the three of them would have a very beautiful life together

i feel like these two are like putting two positive battery ends together & if you did it for too long it would rip the fabric of the universe apart. that being said i NEED addie to team up with the birds of prey & then her & barbara are trying to out boss each other & then they have nasty awful hatesex & never talk again. i think dick & joey both facilitated addie coming in contact with the team & they both deeply regret it forever. it’s honestly for the best if they all forget it ever happened
