for the record what we came up with was:
banjo diddley bow (1 string)
banjo diddley bow + thumb string (2 strings)
banjo balalaika (3 strings)
standard 4 string banjo or banjo ukulele (4 strings)
standard 5 string banjo (5 strings)
standard 6 string banjo or banjo guitar (6 strings)
7-string banjo guitar or standard banjo guitar + thumb string (7 strings)
banjo mandoline (8 strings)
9-string banjo guitar (9 strings)
banjo tiple (10 strings)
banjo oud (11 strings)
12-string banjo guitar (12 strings)
12-string banjo guitar + thumb string (13 strings)
sometimes when people find out my dad is a professional musician they ask me what that's like. and the answer is i just had a long conversation with him about how many different kinds of stringed instruments you could turn into banjos (a la banjo uke or banjo mandolin) so as to create a maximum number of increasingly esoteric banjos with different numbers of strings

SO UH. HERE'S MY DRAWING REQUEST-
Bruno but he's playing some kind of instrument if you can (like a tiple or ukulele?)
And if you don't feel like it (because instruments are hard I'm so sorry) could you maybe do him and Alma just hanging out and doing some mother-son bonding? I really wish they got more screen time hhh- (you can choose whichever, or you could choose neither it's okAY LMAO)
(Also sorry this got long I spent way too much time staring at it and rewriting it because I don't want to seem demanding?? There's literally no pressure, I completely understand if you don't want to!!)
Why not both???

Bruno: Let's go, Mamá!
Alma: Ay, mijo!!

#ThreeQuarterThursday comes early. Especially photographed for @lisa_reed_guitarist, a trio of tiny tiples. Well they’re 3/4 sized (22.5” scale) rather than actual tiple #guitars (a tiple is a #guitar similar in size to a baritone ukulele and the Martin version of the tiple has 10 strings in 4 courses. But I digress...), but these are pretty damned small. They may not, however, be ideal for playing #VanHalen on...not even “Little Guitars”! 😆 1959 #Gibson #ES140 3/4T 1957 #Fender #DuoSonic 1966 Fender #Musicmaster. #diverdown #guitarra #chitarra #guitarre #electricguitar #vintageguitars #fenderguitars #vintagefenders #vintagegibsons #smallguitar #gibsonguitars #guitarsofinstagram #geartalk #guitargear #vintagegear #guitarsdaily #fendersofinstagram #gibsonsofinstagram #guitarphotography

NEW PIC NEW PIC NEW PIC. I’m a little confused about what instruments they’re holding. John’s looks bigger than a bass clarinet to me, but Ant thinks that’s what it is. He said it could be a contralto (which is definitely something he has) but he doesn’t think so. But it definitely looks bigger than the bass to me! As for Flans, I thought it was a ukulele, but Ant said it has more strings than that. He thinks it’s a mandolin or a tiple (whatever that is).
Also DAMN there’s some good VEIN ACTION in John’s arm/hand here, goddddd. I don’t know why but being able to really see his veins is always sexy as fuck to me. I loooooove how much the ones on the other sides of his arms stand out.

Anyone for a Timple? has been published at http://www.theleader.info/2018/10/16/anyone-for-a-timple/
New Post has been published on http://www.theleader.info/2018/10/16/anyone-for-a-timple/
Anyone for a Timple?
“How about a timple?” I was asked by an earnest assistant in one of the traditional music shops in Las Palmas. I had just called in for a replacement violin string, and was looking at the range of Canarian traditional stringed instruments for sale. I quickly realised that I was not being offered an early morning alcoholic drink, and that the young salesman, speaking in English, had discovered an amusing way to catch the attention of English-speaking visitors to the shop.  I have only recently begun to study early Canarian musical instruments, and as my first passion is the violin, this particular stringed instrument caught my eye, simply because of the beauty and simplicity of design. The timple creates a voice by the instrumentalist plucking its strings in much the same way as the guitar, but there the similarity ends. It is much smaller than the guitar and usually has five strings, although in Tenerife some timples only have four strings. The timple is mainly used to accompany Canarian folk music and has a loud and rather sharp voice. Due to the success and increasing popularity of this instrument, it has now reached the status of a solo instrument in some circles. The name of the instrument still intrigues me and I have yet to find a definitive answer to the origin of its name. In line with my initial thought about an alcoholic drink, the timple did used to be called a tiple (with only one ‘p’); before that it was called a ‘camelito camelillo’ because the back of the instrument looks very much like the hump of a camel, although it is less than 40 centimetres in length. Timples were created in the Nineteenth Century and played throughout the Canary Islands and much of South America. In many ways, they are related to the ukulele, the Spanish guitar and the Portuguese chavaquino. Interestingly, the range of woods used is varied with the most common being pine for the body, ebony for the bridges, holy stick for the mast, and wood from the orange tree for decoration. Creation of these beautiful and interesting instruments was and still is a cottage industry across the islands, offering considerable variation in both design and construction. The island of Lanzarote became the centre for the systematic making of these instruments where one of the last timple makers is about to retire after more than sixty years of timple making. The Government of Lanzarote has recognised Antonio Lemes Herandez as artisan of the year for his involvement for more than half a century in the production of timples. Antonio, a craftsman from Teguise, has been building small timples since he was a child. As a child, he made them from cardboard and other materials before painting them. He eventually perfected his technique and transformed a range of wood into his instruments, mostly pine, which he favours for timples since it can tune well. Over the years, Antonio has developed his own unique house style, which continues to delight players across the islands and across the world.  Sixty years after his first contact with the timple, Antonio’s hands continue to create his unique timples, although he now feels that it is time to retire. There are many renowned timplistas, as timple players are referred to, playing classical music and jazz and it is often regarded as an alternative instrument of choice chosen by guitarists. During the next fiesta, if you are fortunate enough to hear Canarian instrumentalists, do watch out for and listen carefully to the timple. I am sure that, like me, you will find it to be an engaging and fascinating instrument. Dia releases new video for Synchronized Swimming!
Dream-pop artist Dia has premiered her new video for Synchronized Swimming off her debut EP Tiny Ocean! Released through Manimal Records, Tiny Ocean features tracks produced by Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M., Atoms for Peace), Tim Carr (The Americans, HAIM) and Frankie Siragusa (theLAB). Tiny Ocean showcases Dia’s baroque-pop sound, ethereal vocals, fused with organic percussion, electric guitars, ukulele, tiple, cellos, and drones. The EP draws inspiration from a 12th century poem in which Kafiristan confesses “since you love me and I love you the rest matters not”. It’s a message that resonates with Dia, “the idea of just total surrender to love, martyrdom for love is power” she says. Tiny Ocean is her interpretation of a love that will “tie a knot around my tiny ocean, hammer me to every wall you build… burn me with your brightness…”
Dia is the experimental indie project of composer/performer, Danielle Birrittella.  A native of New England, and a graduate of NYU and CalArts, she has lived and worked as an artist in New York, France, and Italy, and currently calls Los Angeles home. After spending her formative years on a Hindu ashram, where she sang ceremonial ragas as a child, her journey as an artist then led to performing as a touring opera singer throughout the U.S. and Europe. After receiving a ukulele from her brother, she began experimenting with music & songwriting with it to the point where “I would literally sit on the floor of my bathroom and come up with melodies” she recalls. Dia’s talent and vision has led to global performances at venues like the Disney Hall’s REDCAT (Los Angeles), La Musica Lirica (Italy), The Chautauqua Institute (New York), La Main d’Or (Paris), and The Ludwig Foundation (Cuba).  Her live performance of Covered In Light was also featured on the massively popular NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest series.
Her latest EP brings her opera training together with influences of classical Baroque and French Romantic music, along with an infusion of modern experimental cinematic folk. She thinks Tiny Ocean is best listened to on a long drive in the car, where “the grandness and the movement of being on the road supports the grandness and the movement of the songs”.  Check out the new video for Synchronized Swimming here and download Tiny Ocean on iTunes today!
