On a trip to the local museum, Josey finds herself faced with an unexpected predicament. Despite paying for her ticket, most of the art has been hidden away and reserved for those using a subscription service called Content Cube. Frustrated, Josey subscribes, but this leads to a whole other series of disappointments, from excessive commercials to disastrous corporate sponsorships.
As Josey looks deeper into the Content Cube universe, she begins to unravel a horrifying realization about the nature of creativity itself in this modern world, culminating with an encounter between Josey and the physical manifestation of the gradual commodification of art and expression into the nebulous idea of content.
This encounter does not go well, but it leaves Josey a little more confident of her place in a world that’s endlessly hungry for “content.”
This important tale is 4,300 words of sexless searching for meaningful expression in a world that’s constantly devaluing the importance of art.

Note: Ten favorite monsters, part eight. Previous part. The Point is a seriously underrated movie. Catch it if you’re into stuff like The Phantom Tollbooth or Yellow Submarine.
1. Oblina from Aaahh!!! Real Monsters
Tbh, I didn’t really watch this show. Rugrats was and is my fave Nicktoon, so my first exposure to ARM was crossover episode “Ghost Story.” (That, “The Last Babysitter,” and Rugrats in general has great juvenile horror.) But I have a soft spot for female monsters that have “girly” features while still giving grotesque.
2-4. Anglerfish-esque monsters
Dark spider spirit from Avatar: The Legend of Korra: Some kind of arachnid, anyway. Don’t let her teethies fool you. This lady will just yeet anyone spirited away into the Fog of Lost Souls, she hates people so much.
Grand Fisher from Bleach: The Bleach Wiki describes him as “resembl[ing] a giant hamster.” Which is great. Didn’t even think of that. Rats aren’t the only rodents that can scary. But he’s included here because I love monsters that mimic victims’ loved ones.
Frogfish from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: SpongeBob has other anglers, like two cute ones from “Rock Bottom,” one of my fave episodes. As with Grand Fisher, I love how the Frogfish uses a biological dummy of sorts as a lure. In this case, its tongue. Bringing to mind the Alaskan Bull Worm.
5. Old Dark Frog from Days with Frog and Toad
This and Bony-Legs were seasonal delights for teeny Tawney. The illustration where he's looming, nay, towering over a chilled Frog was so hair-raising.
6. Brain Eating Meteor from The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy
Pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Has one of the best villain songs ever. Thank you, Voltaire.
7. the Demons of Ignorance from The Phantom Tollbooth
It’s like with the Blue Meanies where I can’t pick just one! There’s the Terrible Trivium, of course. But also the barely-there-but-will-bring-you-fear Threadbare Excuse, draconic Two-Faced Hypocrite, etc.
8. the Pointed Man from The Point
Trickster who sounds like a shaken clock. Tumblr sexyman candidate right there.
9. Sadako Yamamura from Ringu
Screenshot’s from Ringu 2. The visage creeping after Mai as she climbs with Yoichi out of the well is based on the forensic reconstruction of Sadako’s corpse.
Localizations are hit or miss for me, but I’ll admit The Ring 2002 was more entertaining. However, I think Sadako’s generally a more interesting villain than Samara.
While Ringu notability took inspiration from Videodrome, it’s its own unique spin combined with Japanese ghost lore.
10. the Tingler from The Tingler
A literal spine-tingler, living on people’s vertebrae. Emits a cardiac, pulsating sound when free roaming and swells after gorging itself on fear.
Note: Eventually, I will try reading the Ring series. I read more murder mysteries than straight-up horror. Might add other Aaah!!! Real monsters to future lists if I ever watch the show proper.

So I saw Suzume, and the realization I just had hit me like a brick. Suzume... like... it's a Tingler!! It's as if @drchucktingle sat down and decided to make an anime.

Also, I just read all of the most excellent novel Camp Damascus by @drchucktingle in less than 24 hours. It’s difficult to say this, but it was better than I expected (I have read a lot of Dr Chucks stories and am familiar with his way - I have high expectations. He is a very good writer.)
As for Camp Damascus it was delicious and yummy and made my brain scream. It also proves that it’s actually very easy to write interesting and compelling autistic characters, Rose is the Best. (My autism has blessed me with an excellent memory and callback/pattern recognition. I loved the Peter Pan theming as a way of showing Rose’s internal journey and progress in her relationship with herself.)
Excellent novel, I will probably reread it soon. But for now it goes back to its place on my shelf next to Straight, as they both patiently wait to be joined by Bury Your Gays.

Here's a piece I did about my love of Santa and Christmas, and more specifically about the last stop-motion special Rankin/Bass ever made, their wonderful 1985 adaptation of The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. The BEST Santa origin story! https://retrorevelations.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-life-and-adventures-of-santa-claus.html

#54: Tingler- Revived from the fang fossil. Tingler only recently went extinct, by fossil standards. Tens of thousands of years ago, wild Tingler roamed the coldest parts of the world. They hunted ancient fish Pokémon by digging holes in the ice and lunging into the water when one swam by. Some Tinglers were even smart enough to use pieces of their old catches as bait to attract more fish to the ice holes. Tingler is a very immature Pokémon; without their parents and other fully-evolved members of their species keeping them in check, they’d just roll around in the snow and play all day. Tingler’s developing fangs are made of hard ice. Despite their appearance, these fangs are actually quite fragile, but they do grow back within a couple weeks if they snap. (Name is a corruption of “tiger”)

Vincent Price - The Tingler (1959) dir. William Castle
For those who did not know about "The Tingler", it's a movie starring Vincent Price (of course). When it was released, director William Castle had an excellent gimmick to mesmerize and startle movie-goers.
Below is a copy and pasted article about said "gimmick".
During the climax of the film, The Tingler was unleashed in the movie theater, while the audience watched a climactic fight scene in Tol'able David (1921). The film stops and, in some real-life theaters, the house lights came on, a woman screamed and pretended to faint and was then taken away in a stretcher; all part of the show arranged by Castle.[12][8] From the screen, the voice of Price mentioned the fainted lady and asked the rest of the audience to remain seated. The film-within-a-film resumed and was interrupted again. The projected film appeared to break as the silhouette of the tingler moved across the projection beam. The image of the film went dark, all lights in the auditorium (except fire exit signs) went off, and Price's voice warned the audience, "Ladies and gentlemen, please do not panic. But scream! Scream for your lives! The tingler is loose in this theater!"[15] This cued the theater projectionist to activate the Percepto! buzzers, giving some audience members an unexpected jolt, followed by a highly visible physical reaction. The voices of scared patrons were heard from the screen, replaced by the voice of Price, who explained that the tingler was paralyzed and the danger was over. At this point, the film resumed its normal format, which was used for its epilogue.
