You build universes really well for your fics — do you ever consider AUs that are crossovers between two universes instead of having characters share a single world? Like HeiHua and MLC crossover of some kind?

I have 100000 percent already done that for fun, whether it would happen in terms of me writing the actual fic I'm not so sure. I sort of have doubted the majority of people would be interested tbh? Both are such small fandoms as it is.

For no reason at all, I tried to pick fics from across different years and fandoms. Let's do this in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published fic first.

来日方长 | the days ahead are long (Mysterious Lotus Casebook) is about Fang Duobing and Li Lianhua fixing up Lotus Tower together and beginning to heal. It's soft and sad and hopeful, and means a lot to me personally in terms of my mental health journey.

我的脚步脊梁都挺在这里 (Daomu Biji) has Liu Sang visiting the Iron Triangle in Rain Village and meeting four adorable chicks, one of whom is an impostor, gasp! I've been told this fic is like a vacation, and so chill it makes your heartbeat slow down.

flew like a moth to you (Guardian) is classic hurt/comfort featuring Zhao Yunlan ineptly but tenderly taking care of Shen Wei after his imprisonment in Dixing. I still like the imagery in the closing lines, and the touches of humour that balance out the angst.

I Was Found (The Magnus Archives) is my post-canon fic about Jon and Martin adopting a calico cat who is blind in one eye. Bizarrely, a year after I published this fic, my sister adopted a calico cat who is blind in one eye. Also, in retrospect, I realise that this fic establishes a niche I now keep going back to: post-canon + established relationship + healing vibes + cute animals

like a clockmaker fixes time (The Watchmaker of Filigree Street novels) fills in the two-year time skip near the end of The Lost Future of Pepperharrow, with Mori working through his guilt and looking after Thaniel. Mori's clairvoyance and Thaniel's synesthesia add a fun twist to the writing, and a couple of commenters said they felt like they were still reading the actual novel.

Obvious fandom is obvious but dmbj/the lost tomb reboot?

Reboot specifically? Sure!

The first character I first fell in love with: Xiaoge (to be fair, I'd fallen in love with him pre-Reboot, but Reboot just reinforced it)

The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Liu Sang

The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Uh... Xiao Mei, I guess? I don't dislike her, I just am fairly neutral about her.

The character I love that everyone else hates: I don't think there is one, really. Chuchu, maybe?

The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Erjing. He started out so good, and then was a traitorous son of a bitch

The character I would totally smooch: Most of them! But I think Pangzi would have the best smooches.

The character I’d want to be like: There isn't any one character I want to be completely like, but if I could, say, take all the best parts of the Iron Triangle, Liu Sang, Xiao Bai, Wu Erbai, and Xiao Hua and combine them all together, I would want to be that XD

The character I’d slap: Jiang Zisuan. Maybe I could slap some sense into him.

A pairing that I love: pingxiesang (is anyone surprised by this?)

A pairing that I despise: I am an ardent multishipper, and have yet to come across any fan pairing in this fandom that I actively despise. For canon ones, though, that zero chemistry one between young Wu Erbai and that girl who was in love with Wu Sanxing was just painful.

Which weather phenomenon/types (sunny, rain, tsunami...) do you associate with your 10 favourite Fire Emblem ladies?

In no particular order:

Lyn - A gentle breeze out on the plains, just enough to stir the grass and move the clouds overhead.

Camilla - A thunderstorm, full of soaking rain and flashes of lightning. Best experienced while standing outside.

Ashera - The eye of a hurricane. Even when everything around is chaotic, it’s still perfectly calm and serene.

Severa - A very windy day, when you have to wrestle the door open and shut and hold on tight to anything that can be blown away.

Azura - A sunshower! (Or a foxes’ wedding, depending on cultural colloquialisms. No, this has nothing to do with Kaden.)

Lucina - Rain; not so heavy that you feel the need for an umbrella but noticeable enough that you quicken your steps.

Say’ri - The thick fog that rises over forests in the morning and seems to mute the entire landscape.

Micaiah - Sunshine, clear skies, and birds singing. (One of the birds is probably Yune.)

L’Arachel - Soft but heavy snowfall. The perfect weather for reading a book next to the fireplace while looking outside.

Ninian - A perfectly calm winter morning, just after the snowfall has ended. The surface is completely pristine, still unbroken by footprints.

You write HeiHua very very complexly , so I want to know - how do HeiHua say “I love you” without using those words?

okay, so I kid you not: I have Fleetwood Mac's Silver Springs playing on repeat right now so when I say we are Really In It Now, I hope you understand the extent. Thank you for asking this when I was desperate to be asked it and then waiting while I completely took forever to come over and answer it.

My basis for never having HeiHua say "I love you" verbally is a mix of cultural, character-based and part of my writing practice. I don't buy that my HeiHua (a man born in Mongolia in 1890 and a man born in China in the late 80s) would naturally say it; I don't buy that these two men specifically would say it. I...can imagine a younger Hei Xiazi, potentially, but not this one, at this point in his life. And also, I have a practice where I try and remove the most obvious word in my fic and instead write around expressing it. It's not very often, for example, you read my Xiao Hua panicking with the actual word panic involved in the paragraph, and that's because I think we often rely on words to tell over words to invoke, when the invocation of the unnamed word is more powerful to us - it requires us to focus on the sensory reality of an emotion.

Anyway. Since I forced myself to not have the literal option, I sort of had to decide the ways they'd say it all over again. For me, the time Hei Xiazi says, "it's you for me, isn't it?" absolutely is standing in for an I love you. The time Hei Xiazi kisses the back of Xiao Hua's hand, and Xiao Hua replies, "I know," also meant I love you. The time Hei Xiazi says, "I came back for you," but also Xiao Hua's earlier statement of "If you ever want to leave." Hei Xiazi is afraid of permanence and Xiao Hua is afraid of being left, but Xiao Hua is also afraid of being trapped, and I think has a lot of experience in feeling that, so offers it away and Hei Xiazi also offers it (an offer of emotional security and permanence) anyway.

Xiao Hua's are predominantly actions, though - the cut up fruit in that same fic, the trying to caramelise the kiwi, the fussing with Hei Xiazi's lapels on his jacket. "You don't need me to compliment you." And "I don't want you to go anywhere." And this one, which is my favourite:

Xie Yuchen sits, eating sweets with chestnut paste for all they’re out of season and eyeing Hei Xiazi with satisfaction. When he’s done, Hei Xiazi senses he needs to eat a token thing off the plate of sweets, and when he does, Xie Yuchen smiles at him.

Because, you know, the fic establishes that those are Xiao Hua's favourite sweets, NOT Hei Xiazi's. Xiao Hua's way of showing love is to try and offer what he loves and what makes him feel loved back. It's meant to imply someone trying to learn how to show love, and his guiding principle on it is how Hei Xiazi loves him.

Do you have a favourite thing (story, myth, celestial body, scientific theory, fandom trope etc) about the night sky?

Two things came to mind immediately. The first is Tolkien’s story of Eärendil the Mariner, sailing across the sky with a star on his brow. The other is from Mercedes Lackey’s Dragon Jousters, in which meteor showers are said to be the souls of the blessed dead traveling to paradise.

As far as celestial bodies go, back when I was in elementary school we did a constellation project--I had Aquila. We outlined the constellations on punch-boards so that we could shine light through them and project them on the ceiling. So really, the project was all about projection. ^_^

What’s more likely to happen for HeiHua, a fight over the phone or a fight in person?

10000 per cent over the phone, because Hei Xiazi uses touch as an emotional grounding/deescalation tactic and you can't utilise something like that without being in person.
