. . . Ah, the fresh smell of warm coffee fills the office you walk into. A bitter but gentle scent, alongside it gives in a gentle cozy feeling to the prosecutors feeling you just walked into. The sight of coffee set by the table just comfirmed the welcoming scent. but.. the coffee wasn't the reason you got into the prosecutors office, was it?
The gentle ambience was broken by a familiar figure standing in front of the desk, grabbing a mug filled with coffee as he shook his head, glaring at you through his visor that showed the famous red strips. He raised an eyebrow, he hadn't been warned someone was comming up to his office, but despite that, he just seemed to smirk his confusion up.
“ Ah, What a suprise to see someone here. Would you want a cup of coffee? Don't mind the other 2 they dont bite either. ”
It seemed like he meant no harm. His eyes then fell on the other 2 people there alongside him. Another prosecutor and... Is that a detective alongside the 2 of them? Perhaps it is. The other prosecutor seemed rather skeptical to speak. But the detective seemed to just stick his tongue out towards you.

How would you rank all the Ace Attorney games you’ve played from favorite to least favorite? You seemed to enjoy all of them, to varying degrees.
So this is actually kind of hard for me to answer depending on whether you base your metric on “how much fun were they to play” “how much do I think to explore the themes / writing / think about the game in general” or “how well written do you think they are”. I’m gonna do all of them and prolly talk a lot so yeehaw. Under the cut bc. surprise surprise! I got long winded
Quick disclaimer: Not including DLC cases or spin off games because if I did we’d be here all day
“How much fun did I have playing through the actual game”
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
Trials and Tribulations
Apollo Justice Ace Attorney
Justice for All
Dual Destinies
Spirit of Justice
This might be kinda surprising to some people considering what I talk about on this blog, but honestly my opinions on these games changed drastically after I had time to ruminate on them. Here’s some explanations if you’re curious!
AA1 very well could be at the top because it was the first game in the series and I was going in fresh— while Turnabout Samurai was a bit of a slog, I managed to get through all of these cases in a day each and just could not put down Turnabout Goodbyes. I don’t think about it as much anymore because it was so foundational and all the things it introduced have been explored by other games, but this game really is the reason I fell into this series with such ferocity.
AA3 was much of the same, and I don’t think I had as much fun with a tutorial case as I did with Turnabout Beginnings. The characterization present in this games and the nonlinearity of the narrative is genuinely fantastic, and my opinion of it has only increased over time.
AA4 is ranked a little lower because I actually wasn’t vibing with the game when I first played it— it was only after Turnabout Succession that everything fell into place and the game skyrocketed up my favorites list. Once I’m finished with all the spinoffs and have some time to chill I actually plan on revisiting it with fresh eyes because I think a second playthrough has the potential to be soooo much better than the first. Also APOLLOOOOOOO he’s my little guy :)
I thought justice for all was fine, but boring. Big Top made me feel some emotions that were less than positive, but generally speaking all the cases were fine but didn’t leave a big impression on me. Also I don’t like Farewell My Turnabout nearly as much as other people— I still like it but it didn’t totally blow me away or anything. Game is still like an 8/10, but it didn’t leave a huge impression on me.
Dual Destinies was confusing as hell timeline wise and it made it kinda difficult to figure out what was even happening, and for that same reason I struggled to attach myself to the plot. The game had some moments that really were stellar but the sheer length and layout of the cases kinda made me wanna cry
I literally only finished this game so I could get to Investigations. Characters were great but it was so. Damn. long.
“How much do I like thinking about the games, its writing, and its themes”
Dual Destinies
Apollo Justice Ace Attorney
Trials and Tribulations
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
Spirit of Justice
Justice for All
This part of the list actually has very little to do with how good I think the games are or how much I like them, but sometimes a game’s themes just Captivate you.
If you’re reading this you’ve probably seen this blog, and you know how I feel about Dual Destinies. I am OBSESSED with this game. I love the characters, I love the themes, and I am fascinated by every part of the writing process and how the game ended up the way it did. I think about this game an unhealthy amount actually. Don’t let my complaining make you think I don’t love this game to pieces. Bc I do. So much.
I love expanding on things. The media I blog about? KIrby and Pokemon, stories that practically beg for you to fill in the gaps and work with their vagueness. So when Takumi handed me a game with half a dozen hanging plot threads and massive time gaps just begging to be filled? You can bet I would never shut the fuck up about it. AJAA my absolute beloved
I could probably talk about Miego for hours. This game is incredible I think about it on the regular. Ough.
This game slams but all the ideas introduced by it have been expanded on and talked about and worked with in a hundred different ways so it’s hard to me to really go back other than to say “wow Turnabout Goodbyes was so fucking good”
Literally the only context in which I think about this game is “this should have been a spinoff” but honestly it barely crosses my mind except when I purposefully try to ignore it
JFA is good and makes me feel absolutely nothing
“How well-written do I think the games are”
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
Trials and Tribulations
Apollo Justice Ace Attorney
Justice for All
Spirit of Justice
Dual Destinies
These are suuuuuper close so this list is a lil shakier than the others but explanations are below as usual!
Ok this is really REALLY tough because I think AA1 and AA3 are tied. They both have their moments and I think the themes are incredible, but for the purposes of this list I’m putting AA1 above AA3 because BttT is a little bit absolutely batshit insane? Turnabout Goodbyes is TIGHT. Sorry Godot you’re still my favorite prosecutor ily kitten
See above
I’ve never seen an AA game whose final cases elevates the entire game quite like AA4. I thought the game was good, but the Turnabout Succession hit and oh my GOD. I think about this game constantly it’s so, SO good. Also helps that Apollo really shakes up the series, he’s my favorite species of insect
These cases were fine, Franziska is a solid prosecutor, the whole “chooses death” thing was fresh, and Farewell was some of the best character writing this series has seen. I don’t honestly have much to even say about it bc it’s super solid
The difference between DD and SOJ is that I think DD had a really good story that it failed to tell effectively while SOJ succeeded in telling its story but that story fucking sucks. Jokes aside I don’t like SOJ but the story is cohesive at least. It had a plot. It was Fine. DD failed miserably but oh my god what you could have been. Ily. Mwah.
See above
Sorry this wasn’t a clear ranking / favorites list, hope you enjoyed regardless!!

You know what would be an interesting au?
If Mia had been the one poisoned by Dahlia.
I wonder how that would change things
I think that Diego would be a 1:1 replacement for her, and do as she does in the original and try to seek justice. He and Maya would become friends and look our for each other whilst they wait for Mia to wake up. Diego is then killed by Redd White, and the first game happens as normal, but Maya summons Diego to help Phoenix, not Mia.
I'm not sure when the canon is that Diego woke up, but I personally headcanoned it as happening shortly after Mia died, sometime during game 1. So in this au, Mia wakes up shortly after the end of Turnabout Goodbyes and learns the heartbreaking news that her boyfriend has died.
This is when the au gets much more different, because of course Maya would know that Mia woke up. They're sisters, and so Mia would reach out to her. This means that Mia would not become Godot, as she would have love and support. However, i still think she'd become a prosecutor.
Unlike Diego, I don't think she'd blame Phoenix for Diego's death, but I do think she'd blame herself and seek to displace that anger and sadness. This time, she picks a more apt target: the judicial system that failed to catch Redd White (he was a criminal, what was a defence attorney even doing investigating him??? That's not their job), and the prosecutor that blamed her sister: Miles Edgeworth.
So, I think that Mia would become a prosecutor, but one that cooperates with defence attorneys, hates the detectives, and really hates Miles Edgeworth. Bridge to the Turnabout would not happen, because Mia would want to swoop in and prosecute Morgan for plotting murder, and so would have immediately taken the letter as evidence of her crimes before Pearl could read it.
I think she wouldn't stick around long in the main game series, but would be an antagonist in Ace Attorney Investigations (note: I haven't played these and don't actually know when they're set... I looked around online and they seem to both take place after TaT, so the timeline should work). She would taunt Edgeworth about how corrupt and incompetent he was, essentially acting as his version of Godot, but maybe a little more inadvertently helpful.

Dear Billy: how did you end up with such a fucking stranglehold on this show? Rest in Pieces you fucking dweeb.
1.) These agents are terrible at talking to teenagers.
2.) I wanna brush Jonathan’s hair. Just because it looks like he hasn’t done it in a while.
3.) I am glad Max is admitting it as soon as she figures out that she’s cursed. I think everyone at this point is tired of the ‘got bit by a zombie and hides it’ shit. Like yeah, she hid headaches and shit, but those are normal trauma things.
4.) Yeah, you wield that lamp, Steve.
5.) I know it’s mostly for the audience but Dustin saying they have bigger problems and then looking at Max should be absolutely incomprehensible to Lucas at this point.
6.) Erica is painting a mini and I love her. Oh Jason is talking to her. Erica, kick Jason’s ass. But also, ERICA, DON’T FUCKING TELL PEOPLE THAT SHIT. GODDAMN IT.
7.) I adore Steve’s ‘a little humility’ line and then sitting down like that. Lmao
8.) Murray is right. You can’t be late to a ransom exchange. That’s kind of dire. Also, you’re in Alaska. They’re in California. What the fuck are you gonna do for your kids from here?
9.) I haven’t mentioned in a while that stranger things or Netflix or both filmed in a holocaust site and then turned it into a tourist airbnb. That’s fucked up, y’all.
10.) of course the boring feds are watching boring golf.
11.) Mike, you literally can’t even tell Will that you need to tell El that you love her. How are you gonna tell El that you love her?
12.) Jonathan’s got PLANS. PIZZA PLANS.
13.) Does Argyle give that pineapple spiel every time?
14.) Lucas, Steve, and Dustin are all idiots if they didn’t immediately recognize these as goodbye-I’m-dead-we-failed letters.
15.) since when does max know a good lawyer. Is it Saul Goodman?
16.) Robin can not walk in heels.
17.) Robin to the rescue with an infodump filled with some laws. It actually works. I’m in love with Robin. Does anyone else think Nancy fell just a tiny bit in love with her after that speech? Loved the low five, btw, babes.
18.) ???????????????????????? Ok Yuri.
19.) Actually I’ve done a rapid turnabout. I love Yuri. He’s a goofy little cartoon man.
20.) Hopper with a stick vs guard with a gun. Who will win? Obviously hopper. Oh god, not the gross foot again. And now the sequel, Hopper with a chain vs guard with a gun. Well, a guard with a gun and then a wrench and then a gun again. Damn that gun was loud.
21.) Hopper did you not put your shoe back on?
22.) THat fucking explosion was hilariously big.
23.) None of these Russians can. Aim for shit.
24.) Hey, kids, I know one of you is cursed, but could you wear your seatbelts?
25.) I love Max so much and I’m gonna rip Vecna apart just for hurting Max. But also why did her mom just kind of leave her there zoning out???
26.) Robin and Nancy are a dream team.
27.) oh they fully copied Silence of the Lambs for this shit. Lmao
28.) Is that Robert Englund? I recognize him from his voice and silhouette. Oh hell yeah it is him. Casting Freddy Krueger in a role like this is actually very fun. Also the way they did his makeup/prosthetics is once again way cooler and more interesting and dare I say creepier than literally all the Vecna corpses combined.
29.) [emotional, tender music playing] over Will and Mike’s little talk. Friends. Best friends. Sure.
30.) Oh damn. People with guns. Honestly this is too much stress to put a fun stoner under.
31.) Okay Hop has a bit to go to get to the fucking church. Oh nvm. He’s like, there already.
32.) This escape is brought to you by JIF’s creamy peanut butter. When you have a busted foot and are on the run from Russian guards, there’s only one type of peanut buttery goodness that will keep you going.
33.) HEY. DUFFER BROTHERS. IT’S NOT SHOCKING IF YOU HAVE EVERY SINGLE FUCKING PLAN IN THE SHOW GO TO SHIT.
34.) The timeline of this season is extra stupid.
35.) Flashback time. “This was a SPAWN OF SATAN!!!’ It killed a rabbit. Like yeah later it turns into hallucinations but at first it was literally just killing small animals. Virginia’s death is so fucking goofy. Oh, Victor Creel was a war criminal. Super not understanding why Henry Creel did all this shit.
36.) Oh, my girls have been found out.
37.) March 29, 1967 to July 4, 1985. Here lies a dipshit.
38.) Max, I love you, but this dream is a tiny bit stupid.
39.) I don’t think the Duffer Brothers have ever mourned someone they hated. Especially not a family member. If I ever rewrite this scene, I’m going in a very different direction.
40.) Steve’s Overprotective Dad Senses are tingling. And he’s RIGHT. Also, I just realized that their eyes don’t go white, they go milky. Their eyes aren’t even rolled back. They go milky and bloodshot for some reason.
41.) Can we talk about how Billy the Racist Shithead got to be in this show and come back way more than LITERALLY EVERY OTHER DEAD PERSON COMBINED? Fuck this douche.
42.) Okay I’m gonna be real with you, but if Billy turned into Vecna, I’d laugh my ass off.
43.) Robin is the one who figured out the music.
44.) I love the music thing but I think there should also be the option of beating Vecna if you just fucking forgive yourself.
45.) Me walking through Vecna’s nightmare mindscape: Hey, have you ever seen that one melting clocks painting? Fuckin’ wild, right? I think you’d be into it. Anyway, I’ve done worse to myself, you ABSOLUTE FUCKING AMATEUR.
46.) Like for real, have the Duffers ever truly hated themselves? Because these Vecna visions have been kind of tame in comparison.
47.) The montage of moments actually is very cute.
48.) I bet some freaks on ao3 have done weird tentacle porn about Vecna.

Ahh hallo! I’m sure you’re very busy with requests and thank you for posting so often!! This is just an idea but maybe a scenario where reader gets upset over an especially emotional case Edgeworth is prosecuting? Like they have an outburst in court and get held in contempt or something and Edgeworth comes to to pay their bail and comfort them after or something!
Oho hallo there! I stuck to the general premise, but instead of it being a case he prosecutes… it’s Turnabout Goodbyes! I really just wanted to write for it, pal. ^^Dialogue from Miles in the court portion is directly from the game!
“The murderer… The criminal in the DL-6 Incident… It was me! Your Honor! I confess my guilt! I am guilty for DL-6, the statute of limitations of which ends today!“
Your blood runs cold as you watch him confess based on memories from a self-admitted recurring nightmare. He presses on with determination, yet even from where you’re seated in the gallery you can see how painful this is for him—how heavy of a burden this has been for him to carry all these years. You feel like you’re trapped in one right then. There’s just no way… no way he could’ve killed his own father.
The people around you are muttering around you, already accepting his guilt at face value. Everyone in the gallery is turning against him once again, despite of the ‘Not Guilty’ verdict that had just been handed down. The court is quickly spiraling into chaos.
“The culprit… is me!”
You refuse to believe it. You look to Phoenix, expecting an objection from him at this point. Expecting anything. However, he just stands there, taking this development in the trial as best as he can, you don’t miss the look of determination in his eyes.
It’s not enough for you, though.
“O-OBJECTION!” You see red as you slam your hands down on the wooden bannister (you’d always wanted to do that). The gallery erupts as everyone’s eyes are on you, but you don’t register any of it in your seething as you go on autopilot. “Miles has to be innocent! There’s no way he’s remembering this correctly, he was just a child when this happened! That shouldn’t be admissible in court…!”
The judge slams down his gavel as he makes direct eye contact with you. “Order! Order! Outbursts will not be tol—”
“This should not be tolerated! I don’t care if it happened yesterday, this is just—just… it’s objectionable!”
“That’s quite enough! If you have any further outbursts I will have to hold you—”
“Do it! Hold me in contempt of court! The fact that you’re actually hearing a confession based on nightmares tells me all I need to know about the quality of this court and your ability as a judge! Because no self-respecting judge would allow this to continue.”
“Why, I never! Guard! Please escort the observer out of the courtroom! They are to be held in contempt of court and must leave.”
You don’t wait for the guard to approach you, you walk down of your own volition and allow them to escort you out without further issue. You’ve said your piece.
“With that outburst over… I must say, this is certainly unexpected—”
You hear nothing else as the bailiff opens the doors and nods his head for you to follow. You catch one last glimpse of Miles, gripping his arm tightly in pain as he keeps his gaze focused ahead—away from you.
The doors shut and so does your knowledge of what goes on behind them.
You’re stuck in one of the far back holding cells, which means that you don’t have a good view of who comes and goes further up the hall and in all the other holding cells that aren’t immediately adjacent to yours. You’d tried to find a good angle, hoping to perhaps see your friend as he’s brought back in
Where you’d remained lost in your thoughts for the remainder of the night, unable to sleep a wink.
As much as you didn’t regret defending Miles, you have to admit that you do regret not knowing the outcome of what happened yet. Nobody came to visit you yesterday, so you can only assume that the trial continued until after visiting hours were over…
Phoenix had yet to lose a case and you truly believe that Miles is innocent, but still you can’t help but worry yourself into being sick. Miles is very… important to you. Even if you haven’t always seen eye to eye, you’d managed to lodge yourself like a thorn in his side as a friend for the past year (even if he may not use that term, you know he views you as such). And you’d developed some additional feelings for him, too, but you kept that to yourself.
You can’t stop thinking about how guilty he looked throughout his confession and you hoped that he was free of that now...
The sound of a guard approaching your cell snaps you from your stupor and you’re quick to hop up, expecting them to be bringing you your bland breakfast. Instead, the man who stops in front of your cell isn’t holding anything, save for his keys. He seems to read the confusion on your face as he gives you a reassuring smile.
“Your bail’s been posted,” he tells you as he unlocks the door.
“…I-It has?”
Given the extent of your outburst, your bail wasn’t exactly cheap. You don’t even want to think about the fine you’re going to be slapped with come your hearing. So, the fact that someone paid it... there’s only one person who comes to mind as he slides it open.
“Yup! You’re free to go, the poster’s waiting up front to take you home, too.”
Your heart picks up a bit at that and you leave the cell with no further hesitation, hoping that your gut instinct is right. Even if you’re a bit nervous to face him after creating such a scene. And sure enough, after passing through the security checkpoint and entering the lobby... Miles Edgeworth is standing there, arms crossed and looking utterly lost in his thoughts.
However, when he sees you his expression relaxes and... he smiles? It’s incredibly subtle, but it’s genuine and it’s undeniably there. The sight of it is enough to make any words you wanted to say die in your throat. It takes you a few moments to find them again.
“Th-Thank you, Miles. I’ll be sure to repay you when I can.” You place a hand on his shoulder and offer him a nervous smile of your own, hoping that he wouldn’t be too harsh on you. “But how are you doing? I...I’m just glad to see you walking free, I was really worried after... you know.”
He spares a mildly confused glance at your hand before looking back to you, brow furrowing with confusion.
“Yes, I am... fine, I simply have a great deal to think over, having just been released, myself.” His expression falters for a moment into something stormy and troubled, there and gone in the blink of an eye. “But there’s no need for repayment. And I fully intend to pay all of your fines as well.”
Didn’t he already do the same for Maya? That feels like a lot of money to spend purely on helping with contempt of court charges.
“...But why would you...?”
He grimaces at your question and you’re confused for a few moments until he clears his throat and places one hand on your shoulder, emulating your gesture and body language.
“Whooooooooooooop! Th-Thank you!”
There’s some snickering from the officers who were not so subtly observing your reunion and Miles is quick to hang his head in embarrassment as his hand falls back to his sides, all while blushing the color of his signature suit. All you can do is stare at him, feeling like that came entirely out of left field.
“That... that still makes me feel incredibly foolish. Perhaps I just need to practice it more...?” he mutters more to himself than to you.
You have to bite down on your bottom lip to prevent yourself from laughing along with them, but only because he's too cute. This isn’t a side you’d seen of him before... and you have a feeling that whatever happened in that courtroom is responsible for it. You’re going to have to get all the details from Phoenix later...
“What was that all about?”
“Ngh... I’m... practicing saying ‘thank you’ properly. I... appreciate that you believed in me to such an extent, even when I did not believe in myself. I owe a great deal to you and the others... it’s really the least I can do.”
It’s so... genuine. Any of your lingering anxieties shatter in that moment and a broad grin of your own breaks across your face as you take a step closer, grabbing his hand and gently tugging on it to lead him out the door. “What about driving me home?”
Somehow, his cheeks seem to grow even more red at the contact, but you’re rewarded with another small smile as he gladly follows your lead. “Right, yes, that too, of course.”
Really, he just wants to get out of the detention center as soon as possible after his little display of gratitude and you can’t exactly blame him. You don’t let go of his hand until you’ve reached his red sports car, his fingers linger for a moment—brushing against yours as you pull away. He doesn’t look at you or comment on it, but you get the distinct impression that... he enjoyed the contact?
The thought is enough to make you blush as you wordlessly get into the passenger seat and buckle your seatbelt... only to be thrown for yet another loop when he puts on some upbeat Korean trot music on. The silence between you is surprisingly comfortable as you listen to the music on the drive back to your place.
You’re realizing that he’s full of surprises... and you can’t help but love him more and more with each one.

The Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright Timeline
The title’s a little misleading. This is a timeline of the Professor Layton and Ace Attorney games that brings them together so Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright can exist in the canon. For the unaware -- it’s not very obvious when the Layton games take place, but most people place it around the mid-1900s, around the ‘60s for the main games. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney canonically takes place in 2016, which is established from the one (1) canonical date of DL-6 happening in 2001. Thanks for that, Capcom.
I used the Ace Attorney wiki’s timeline as well as been_there_pun_that’s timeline of the Layton series as resources to base my own timeline of events upon, the latter of which has been rendered slightly inaccurate by the anime (especially with regards to Katrielle) but the rest of which is solid.
The base assumption of this is that Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright takes place in November 2018, after The Stolen Turnabout but before Furio Tigre impersonates Phoenix Wright. I use American names for the PL games for simplicity’s sake, and LBMR is ignored on this timeline because I barely know anything about this game. (Katrielle’s birth is on here because I know she was born when Luke was fifteen, and that’s the extent of what I know about her.) Major spoilers for Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy (Layton backstory related), and minor spoilers for Investigations 2 (the case number of a certain inciting incident). Minor spoilers for the rest of both series as well, and major spoilers for Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright.
Most of the events here are the major events of each game. I included Phoenix Wright and Layton’s births in the timeline, which is why this contains Azran Legacy spoilers at the start. This is incomplete on purpose; there are a lot of events over the course of all the games, so I narrowed my focus a lot. I decided to include the inciting event of Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright because well...it is a timeline designed to make it compliant with both series. :)
I moved Professor Layton up rather than moving Ace Attorney back because the technology level in the London of Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright is closer to that of Ace Attorney than of Professor Layton. (Maya and Phoenix are flying in a plane in their first cutscene, for instance, and Carmine Accidenti’s car is more modern.)
1982: Hershel Layton is born.

*There isn’t an exact age given for Layton at the time he was adopted, just a “more than 30 years ago”, and given that Azran Legacy takes place when he’s 36, he had to have been less than that at the time, but old enough to retain some memories (while they remain repressed). been_there_pun_that puts Layton at 4 at the time of his adoption, which makes sense to me, so I put it down as four years after his birth, but it could ostensibly be 1987 as well.
**Misthallery is very green, so the seasons haven’t taken effect.
***Monte d’Or is in a desert, so I have no clue what season it could possibly be. Fucking Azran messing with the weather and making my life harder :P
Events of Azran Legacy take place over a longer span of time than any other Layton game, leaving it difficult to place in the timeline. I’ve done my best here. I don’t know where I got that Curious Village and Diabolical Box take place in August, but I am using it to full effect. This puts Curious Village only a few weeks after the events of Azran Legacy, which is in fact what I think.

hi, it's sister anon back after like a month. I got a friend of mine to watch the anime with me bc she wants to get into ace attorney, and we spent the entire time making fun of the animation. and in doing so I discovered a possible reason for why my sister had a thing for edgeworth: in the first few episodes of s1 he gets ALL of the animation budget. like the art style is kinda terrible overral but even in scenes where everyone in the courtroom has terrible proportions and no faces, edgeworth usually looks fine. this happens less after turnabout goodbyes but still. the animation team really liked him.
this ask just made me briefly mentally jump into a timeline where edgeworth got the studio bones reigen treatment and i got scared thinking about that

There was an news article on my timeline today about a parrot stopping some burglars by greeting them and scaring them off with that. The article headline made a side joke comment that the parrot didn't gave a testimony yet... and my brain instantly went to AA. Sure it's noting like "Turnabout Goodbyes" but still. I really need to replay the games again! They're so much fun!
That's very close, parrot being involved in crimes (or in this case preventing it), amazing animal

Face him head on - A Narumitsu Fic
So I got into the AA fandom recently and... I love Bratworth??? And I like seeing Bratworth/Feenie content? So I wrote this:
Basically, Post SoJ Edgeworth and Wright get teleported (with some Magatama incident) in the years where they were young, aka Bratworth’s and Feenies (Pre-Dahlia) years, but, Wright appears in the courthouse with young Miles, and Edgeworth in Ivy University with young Phoenix. So, the old counterparts, to get back together, make their young selves meet again.
I know this sounds complicated af, but I swear it’s a LOT easier to understand if you just read it
Spoilers for: Most of AA: Trials and Tribulation and Turnabout goodbyes
Warning: Mention of blood, fluff, and a bit of horny Bratworth for Older Phoenix and his fancy suit. Nothing explicit
Words count: 3.700
Enjoy~
Edgeworth paced the tribunal’s hall, his shoes clicked on the smooth pavement, Von Karma was to arrive soon for a trial and he was sure the man was going to want to meet him for a regular check-up on victories and progress. Miles wasn’t really ecstatic about it, but he had no choice, so he used this time to prep-talk himself, that was until a voice from a man he had just surpassed stopped him, “Excuse me, um… what year are we in?”
How could you not know the current year? “What a foolish question, you should be out of this world to not know.” He turned around with his eyes close, “We are well in two-thousand and–” but as he opened his eyes, his words were cut off by the sight of a well-dressed man in multiple shades of blue.
The stranger’s eyes widened, “M-Miles?” he stuttered, and Edgeworth flinched at the use of his name, making him forget all about the suit, “H-How dare you call me by my first name?! It is highly inappropriate and unprofessional, especially from a stranger” the annoyance from his own situation with his mentor arose and he turned around to leave with a “Hmph!” as he was stopped again: “What do you mean ‘stranger’ Mi- Edgeworth? It’s me, Phoenix!”
He scanned his memory for that name, but only one person came to mind- and it definitely wasn’t them. They were part of his past and also the same age as Miles, so it was impossible.
The man shifted behind him, “Really Edgeworth? Does the name ‘Phoenix Wright’ not ring any bells?”
Wright?
His breath hitched.
With an expression full of surprise, he turned back to the man and stared: the spiky hair, the ocean-deep eyes… an attorney badge?!
No, it wasn’t the Wright, it couldn’t be.
He shook his head, “There is no logical way you are the Wright I’m thinking about-” a soft smile welcomed his confused gaze, “But I am- “ He fished for something in his pocket, “Here” and opened his hand to present it to him, Edgeworth accidentally gasped out loud: Signal blue, worn out and slightly faded.
“H-how?” he let out a shaky breath, clutching his arm with the one that wasn’t carrying his bag, “You are my same age- yet you look much more mature-” and hotter, “And what are you doing in a courthouse? Why do you have a defence pin- no” he stopped himself, “You are trying to fool me. You are not who you say you are”
A deep sigh came from the supposed Wright, “I know it’s hard to wrap your head around it- but it’s me, from the future”
His confusion disappeared in an instant, replaced with anger, “What nonsense are you spouting?!” He almost took his leave for the third time, “You want proof, Edgeworth?” his words stopped him once again, as Phoenix shoved his hands in his pocket again, “Then there is proof!” he fished out a device he had never seen before, he deduced it was a cellphone, but much more technological: it didn’t have a keypad and it lit up to show an image with various people in it, just for it to change. The man pressed the screen and there was a calendar which showed the same date but another year– so far away from the current one.
“See? This is almost twenty years ago for me, of course I look older, but it’s me” He placed a hand on his chest for emphasis, “Here- I’ll even show there is an older version of you!” he clicked the screen again and a cellphone contact with the name ‘Miles Edgeworth’ was there: the number was his.
He still couldn’t believe it, but the longer he stared at the man, the longer he could see Phoenix Wright, the kid with the biggest brightest smile he had ever seen, something in his chest was bubbling at the memories of his childhood friend.
“Edgeworth I know this is confusing and very sudden but– you need to help me find my Edgeworth” those words deepened that feeling, my Edgeworth…
“If I’m here with you, that probably means he’s with twenty years old me– you have your car already, yeah?” He stuttered out a reply, “Then please Edgeworth, help me find him” Phoenix grabbed both of his shoulders and stared at him with his glittery eyes.
His instinct was to say yes, but the fury of Von Karma about making him wait would be inevitable… but those eyes… his touch…he was so close…
“Yes…” he panted out, his breath missing from the closeness of his childhood crush, and the next second, he was being dragged down the hall: Phoenix was holding his hand.
His face lit up and the fire within him started to crackle louder: the man was well-toned, the blue suit was perfect for him- made for him, and that light blue vest… made him wild, it made his sculpted chest and thin waist even more obvious, the gold chain to his pocket and his shiny attorney badge complimented the look: Miles had to look away in shame for thinking such thoughts.
Without realizing it, Phoenix had dragged him all the way to the parking lot, like he was more than familiar with the courthouse layout… which he guess backed up his pin. “You already have the red sports car?” he looked at Edgeworth with a serious expression, which made him quiver a little, “Y-yes!”
He was dragged again until they arrived at the car, he managed to fish out his keys and unlock it, Wright stole them from his hand, his skin warm against his left a tingling sensation, “I need to drive, you don’t know where we’re heading. I know you don’t like that other people drive your car, sorry, but it’s an emergency” He flushed again as he entered the passenger seat, the question of how he knew such a thing was answered by the fact that Phoenix knew him in his… timeline? World? Either way, any type of complaint died in his tongue, too overwhelmed as the man started the car and Phoenix’s cologne filled the air: it was fresh and pleasant, it complimented his looks just as the suit did.
While they were speeding somewhere, the car was silent: mostly because Edgeworth was overwhelmed with... Phoenix, everything about him was too much to process.
How the little boy in his memory became this handsome man, why he was a defence attorney, how he came from the future… how the butterflies in his stomach hadn’t stopped since his name was brought up.
Yes, Miles had a bit of a childhood crush on Phoenix, but he had to stuff away his feelings since Von Karma had subtly introduced him to daughters of powerful friends of his multiple times, and had expressed how ‘He could choose between marrying a proper woman or dedicate his life to his job’.
But seeing a mature, sexy version of Phoenix had reawakened that old fire he thought he had extinguished.
The man driving fumbled with that device again and then placed it on his lap, the beeping made him realize he was calling someone.
“Phoenix? Are you alright?” a voice that sounded awfully like his own replied, Wright picked up the device, “Miles! I’m on my way!” So this was the older him! And they used their first names! This meant they were friends!
A wave of happiness washed over him knowing they reunited after all this time.
“On your way?! Phoenix how do you know where I am?!”, Wright turned left using only one hand to steer, which was… hot…
Edgeworth looked away and realized how much the sight had affected him… he could feel his pants become a little tighter... “I awoke at the courthouse, not too far away from twenty years old you, I presume you must be at Ivy university with twenty years old me”
“Yes…” They accelerated a little as the confirm came in, “I’m glad I caught him as he was leaving class… I swear I saw… Her… in the distance” Wright’s grip on the wheel tightened, his face winced like he was in pain: Who was… her?
“I should be there in five minutes or so, bring young me with you at the entrance: visitors aren’t allowed inside” an okay arrived from the device, “I’m… not wearing the sweater am I?” The question was so weird Edgeworth snapped his head towards Wright in confusion, why what he was wearing matter?
A sight came from the other line, “No, fortunately you aren’t… I think you haven’t started da-” he stopped his older version of him on the phone, “Don’t Miles…” the man driving the car looked at him for a brief2 second, “You’re on speaker”.
A mortified “Oh” came from the other line, “I’ll see it for myself, bye” he placed the device on his lap again, not before a concerned, “Drive safe Phoenix” came as a goodbye.
Silence fell again, and it stayed that way for a while, Edgeworth was becoming restless, Phoenix could tell by how hards he was grabbing his arm, so he talked, “Say… you had your first trial already, yeah?” He winced at the memory of that man falling backwards, with blood spilling from his mouth… that girl smirking…
He shivered and nodded, a hand softly settled on his shoulder, “I’m sorry to bring back the bad memory, but I need to find out at what time both you and young me are living in right now” he nodded and dared a peek at Wright.
His brows were furrowed in concentration: he was thinking: “How do I ask this…” he mumbled, “Um.. Did you make it on the news?” The question threw him off, “Uh… Y-yes… an article about me was released not too long ago” Phoenix nodded, “Alright, so young me is aware of you”
A confused “Huh?” slipped past his lips. Phoenix shook his head, “Young me saw that article, that’s how…” he paused.
Wright had seen the article? A chill went down his spine… they didn’t talk too well about him on there… it mentioned all sorts of bad rumours. Did Phoenix hate him now?
“No, I can’t say more than this, you’ll see for yourself once we arrive”
It struck him that he was about to see Wright, well, the Wright he spent that blissful year of school with… his Wright.
“Hey… don’t overthink this, I can assure you everything will be fine” A comforting smile came from the man, Edgeworth nodded.
Now that he had seen older him, he couldn’t think how twenty-year-old Phoenix would look.
_______________
Phoenix parked and scrambled out of young Edgeworth’s car, the man was walking so fast he had no time to register where they were, thank god for the massive sign saying “Ivy university”. So this is where Phoenix ended up huh.
They approached the entrance by the big stairs, and once on top of them, there they were: The older version of himself reminded him too much of his father, the glasses were– as best as he could remember – the same model. He was wearing a long jacket a shade slightly different than his, the cravat was at its usual place and the black vest, he realized, matched with Phoenix’s, different colour, but it looked like the same model.
A smaller boy was standing almost behind him, gripping the sketchbook to his chest, a red scarf hid his reddened face: he was looking directly towards him. His stomach dropped: that was Wright.
“Phoenix!” His counterpart ran into adult Wright’s arm, embracing him for a few seconds before pulling away and cupping his cheeks, “Are you ok? Is everything all right?” the man with the spiky hair smiled, “Yes Miles I’m ok”.
After a sigh of relief, his old self looked right at him and scooted away from Phoenix, a little blush lit his cheeks. An awkward silence fell in the middle of the chaos of students leaving school.
“So… how do we go back?” Wright asked, adult him looked down in thoughts, “I’m not sure… but Maya shoved the magatama on me as soon as it started to lit up” He grabbed the side of his jacket and pulled a shaped rock out of it, “I presume we’ll have to use this… although you’re much handier with it than I am” He gave it to adult Wright and then looked back at him, he looked away: he looked so much like his father it hurt.
“M-miles…?” A broken voice called his first name, both Edgeworths looked at the young boy with the spiky hair. He was about to say how childish it was to call him by his first name, but his heart dropped as he realized: Phoenix was crying, subtly sobbing in the scarf, “Why didn’t you reply to my letters?” Edgeworth gripped his arm, “Why did you suddenly disappear?” he cringed, “Why are you a prosecutor?” he choked out the final question, Miles internally cursed von Karma and that damned earthquake.
“I..-” he attempted to reply, but Phoenix threw himself at him, making his briefcase drop: “I MISSED YOU SO MUCH!”
The boy gripped him desperately, his first instinct was to shove him away, yell at him to stay back and disappear. Wright was part of his painful cursed past.
But the warmth of another body surrounding him… the closeness of his friend made him realized that he was the cause of his sadness: he had hurt Phoenix.
His brain screamed at him to free himself, but every inch of his body, touch-starved for years… and his instinct to protect him… they held his negative thoughts back from becoming true.
Adult Wright was holding that greenstone, absorbed in thoughts, but older him stared at his soul, smiling. Phoenix was a sobbing and shuttering mess, his suit was going to be ruined after this, but as if older Edgeworth read his mind, like this was a situation he’d been before, he whispered softly enough for only him to hear: “Don’t run, face it head-on”
After a few seconds of confusion, he almost physically recoiled as he realized what older him was saying: his suit getting stained, his pride being hurt, what von Karma taught him… they were all excuses to run away from an uncomfortable situation: this situation.
Face it head on… Phoenix’s feelings, all of the memories he reminded him of, the mistakes he had made, his hurtful past… He had to face them head-on.
But his feelings for Phoenix! The butterflies he got when a nine-year-old Phoenix smiled at him or grabbed his hand… the insecurity of preferring boys over girls that had started with the man in his arms-
Older him sighed and held out a hand in Wright’s direction, “Hm? Yes Mile- Hmf!” and grabbed older Phoenix’s tie, pulling him to… kiss him.
Miles’s eyes widened as he observed how Wright’s surprised expression melted into the kiss, his eyes closed and a hand crept up onto older Edgeworth for support: Edgeworth had told Wright his feelings, and he reciprocated them.
Every ounce of logic flew right out of the window and Miles hugged the still sobbing Phoenix tight, pushing him against his chest. He stiffened as a small gasp came out of the boy in his arms, he was just waiting for Phoenix to shove him away, to say that he hated him, to see his angry face… but Phoenix never moved away, actually, he whispered: “I missed you so so much…”
The gentle voice hit him straight in his heart, so he replied, “... I… missed you too…” and closed his eye as tears threatened to spill out.
___________________
They broke the kiss before it became too heated, panting, Phoenix, after recovering, asked, “What was that fo-” but he was cut off again as Miles took his chin and turned it to their younger versions directions, hugged as both of them cried. His husband smiled at the sight.
Edgeworth remembered how Wright told him, (when pretty drunk once after Edgeworth’s trial, and again, after Phoenix had almost died due to the bridge) how when he saw the ‘Demon prosecutor’ article, all he wanted was to hug Miles and ask him what happened.
Of course, Edgeworth knew that even if they had met back at that time, his phobia of the past and his repressed feelings toward men and Phoenix (because yes, they were two separate things), wouldn’t have allowed it, ever. Especially with all of von Karma’s hate for romantic relationships with ‘normal people’ in general, planted in his head.
He never told Phoenix what he wished would have been impossible, it wouldn’t have been nice. But as soon as he saw twenty years old Phoenix threw himself at twenty years old him, he knew exactly what thoughts were going on in his head. Denying young Phoenix of the hug would have hurt both older and younger Wright… and of course, his younger self too.
So, he thought to himself, that a little encouragement and reassurance wasn’t going to hurt. In fact, it was all worth it when his husband flashed that big soft smile of his at the sight.
After he stopped staring at the two young adults, he turned towards Miles, “I’m pretty sure I know how to go back: all we need to do is hold the magatama in our hands and think to walk back to Kurain village” he whispered, Miles nodded, “Thank god I caught it when Maya threw it at me” he replied, earning another smile from Phoenix.
They waited another minute before their younger selves untangled out of the embrace: Miles guessed their habit of long hugs was something that had always been there from the start.
After wiping their tears aways, Phoenix spoke first, “Alright, we are ready to return in our year-” Miles placed a hand on his husband’s shoulder, “Before we go, I’d like to speak to my young self… privately” Young Edgeworth looked away while older Wright nodded, “Ok… just, don’t say anything… risky” Miles flashed a smirk, “I have no intention to”. With that said, he walked towards twenty years old Edgeworth, “May I have a word with you?”, young him stuttered out a yes, and followed him a bit away from the Wrights.
__________________
“von Karma is going to be furious when you show up late, so say confidently that you were stuck in traffic. Don’t say that there was an incident unless you run into one on your way back, he will probably check” Young him recoiled by how detailed the plan was, “O-ok…” he gripped his jacket, older him smiled, “Keep Phoenix close, no matter what the consequences” he placed both hands on young Miles shoulders, “You like him, don’t you?” After a pause and a cringy expression, he slowly nodded, “Don’t be ashamed of it, he won’t judge you. Phoenix will be there for you if you ever need anything” The wide-eyes stare he received made him smile, “You simply have to allow him in, and trust me: you’ll never regret it”
Edgeworth realized that his wedding ring was in full display, and maybe the news wouldn’t ease his younger self’s nerves, so he shoved his left hand in his pocket, and spoke right after to cover up the perhaps too rushed action, “At first, it may hurt to explain your situation to Phoenix, but it will only be at the start. Again: if you allow him in, he’ll only be of help and support. You just have to face him head-on”
Young Edgeworth was still a little confused, but as he took a quick glance behind his older self (probably to look at Wright) he nodded, “I… I’m scared…”
Of course he was, hell, he himself was scared when Phoenix came crashing into his life, shuttering everything he had built up until then.
“I know, your first instinct is to run, but unless you want to hurt him, it’s better that you explain your situation first thing first”
After letting young Miles elaborate a little more, they went back to the Wrights, and each Edgeworth took their rightful place next to them.
“Well, I guess it’s time we head back” Older Wright broke once again the silence, “I hope you too keep in touch from now on” they looked at their younger version look at each other and gaze away as a flush crept onto their cheeks, “T-thank you for bringing him to me… me” Young Phoenix bowed, as young Edgeworth’s blush deepened.
“Let’s go or we’ll worry Maya and Pearl” Miles waved at the two and grabbed Phoenix’s hand, leading him away. After they climbed down the stairs, they disappeared.
Wright and Edgeworth were left standing next to the other, “So… that really really just happened, huh…” the boy with the spiky hair huffed, turning to face his silver-haired friend: “So uhh… sorry for–” “I’m sorry Phoenix but I have to go, now” he cut him off, startling the boy, Miles dug into his briefcase and pulled out his business card, the one von Karma had him make before he even became officially a prosecutor, “We have a lot to catch up on but– there is a very inpatient person waiting for me and I’m already–” a soft hand crept on his shoulder, pulling him out of the small panic he had gotten into when he intterrupted the other boy, “I understand” Phoenix took the card and brought it to his chest, “I’ll text you and we can see each other with less rush” he smiled, and that made Miles relax, “Just- promise me something… “ a small hint of pain in his eyes made him look like a lost puppy, cute, “Please answer me this time”.
Edgeworth realized that not answering his letters might have hurt Phoenix more than he thought, but he nodded, “I will, I promise” and after a quiet goodbye, he rushed to his car, speeding carefully along the road.
von Karma, as his older self anticipated, bought the excuse, not after a little scolding, of course.
He was thankful that they were walking while talking, and he didn’t have to pay actual attention to the conversation, because Miles’s mind drifted off to how sexy Wright looked with that blue suit, and how cute Phoenix was with the red scarf.
Yes, the childhood friend was going to be a constant thought from now on, distracting him from his work, but as older him said: he wasn’t going to run away, he wanted Phoenix back into his life, and no von Karma or murder case was going to deny him that wish.

Discourse Idea you can displace one murdered Ace Attorney character either up and down the timeline once (bypassing their murder scene by being timecloned). Whodo you chose to move and when do you deploy them to cause maximum chaos?
If we don't count any killers as murdered then that doesn't leave too many people that would be chaotic. Also do you mean people still think they're murdered but they can show up at any point?
I can't see anything right now that would be more chaotic or wouldn't be immediately resolved. Like if you put Gregory into Turnabout Goodbyes that may make Von Karma freak out but it wouldn't make Miles confess like he does in canon. Also that would be much too kind to him to have his father again (bullying hours eternal).
Thinking about dropping Gregory Edgeworth in right after Rise from the Ashes or during Farewell my Turnabout? He either just missed his son and thinks he's dead or Miles is too taken out of commission to fully help Phoenix get Maya back.
That's all I could come up with right now I think I just don't fully understand all of the conditions

SO in Aviary Attorney you DO have a rival prosecutor who’s a basic bird equivalent to Miles Edgeworth. He’s really stuck up and snarky, he’s ~undefeated~, he insults our hapless lawyer a lot but secretly likes him and is a good guy, though ofc there are differences, he actually already had his redemption arc of his own accord before the game took place and is committed to the ~truth~from the very beginning, there’s no intense childhood backstory and it’s not nearly as gay, because the ladder jokes and premise aside the game doesn’t actually straight up rip off Ace Attorney or anything
BUT HE IS DEFINITELY STILL ROOSTER MILES EDGEWORTH IN MY MIND
AND WE DO HAVE TO DEFEND HIM IN A TRIAL, THOUGH IT IS VERY DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES
AND I FAILED TO SAVE HIM!!! I FAILED TO SAVE ROOSTER MILES EDGEWORTH YOU GUYS!!!
I MESSED UP TWICE AND THAT JUST STRAIGHT UP GOT HIM EXECUTED, HE WAS SHOT IN THE HEAD AND I GOT TO HEAR THE GUNSHOT. I GOT ROOSTER EDGEWORTH KILLED THROUGH MY BAD LAWYERING.
and there’s just this whole in depth ending where you go through this entire fourth act of the game after failing to save him.
THE MIRACLE NEVER HAPPEN.
anyway, im going to go back and figure out how to save him now, since i checked and you can! you’re supposed to!
but i didn’t.
I lived out the darkest timeline, i basically played through an entire conclusion where Phoenix fucks up Turnabout Goodbyes in a Bird AU, can’t believe this happened to me.
#i mean not really emotionally on that level while phoenix woulda been destroyed#Actual Bird Lawyer didn't even cry#but still#STILL SURREAL#aviary attorney#i feel like i should personally apologize to phoenix wright and get a narumitsu fan demerit

(( [ suddenly thinks about Rise from the Ashes in terms of Defense Attorney!Franziska AU and the fact the timeline could work out that that’s the first case Miles gets involved with after being released and having his badge reinstated and the combo of RFtA and Turnabout Goodbyes still fucks him up enough that he still “Chooses Death” and how that would absolutely devastate Franziska even more than in canon ]
