Well, seeing as we are nearing the end of book 7 (Please?), I've been reflecting over the dreams and my thoughts about them, and it can basically be summed up as, "This could've been an email." Like don't get me wrong, I'm freaking out about Malleus but at the same time I'm so ready for book 7 to be over and to move on with the story. Even saying my criticisms (chaotic dream pacing cough cough Lilia, explanations that are too vague, etc.) Feels like beating a dead horse at this point. I wish they had added some sense of urgency to the story to hurry it along too. Maybe add a time limit to how long they can spend in a dream, or maybe they could include a deadline of a week before things go to shit, idk.
I'm remaining optimistic as always because I love twst so much and always will, but man. If we have another 100 parts of untrimmed fat to go through I may pass away from old age.

I think there's nobility in trying to keep optimistic about a hobby/interest, but I also think that there shouldn't be anything wrong with critiquing what you enjoy. It comes from a place of love and wanting that hobby/interest to be better because you care about it so much! So really, I encourage everyone to critique as they wish.

Averaging that out, that means a character's dream to waking segment takes ~12 parts (rounded down from 12.4) 💀 but of course we have outliers like Sebek and Epel, who only have only 4 parts and Riddle (that glory hog/j) taking up an ABSURD 35 parts, which is almost triple the average.
I think the dreams were definitely novelties around the time they initially come out. We get fanservice and the high of speculating what the dreams could mean for each dreamer. But then as more time passes and that excitement wears off, we start to scrutinize these segments a lot more. We start to realize how the pacing is extremely uneven, how they keep overcomplicating or reexplaining how the dreams operate, and/or how Malleus has not been present since 7-112. Lilia hasn’t been present since even further back, in 7-100. The devs should have cut back to Malleus and Lilia’s brawl to catch up with them between dream hopping from one dorm to the next. The repeating patterns (like how each boy uses their UM once, how the boys from the previous dorm stay behind to let the OB boy jump into the next dorm's dreams, etc.) quickly become repetitive and predictable. We become annoyed with how none of the characters seem to be acting with urgency; they often stand around talking about funny experiences or their families or whatever when they should be investigating seriously because they don't know how much time they have left before Malleus's magic shrouds all of Twisted Wonderland. They really should have added a cap to how long they can spend in each dream or how long they have until it's Too Late for the world. It feels like there are no stakes when the characters are wasting time watching Rook's Vil and Neige fancams or eating a bunch of cakes in Cater's courtroom. The devs only started to change up these formulas WAY too late (around like Savanaclaw???), like having the freshly woken dreamer attack us (Jack), having a very depressing dream (Leona), Malleus becoming relevant again (Riddle), NPCs helping us instead of harming us (Leona and Riddle), etc.
At this point, I'm SO tired and I just want book 7 to be done and over with (good luck to EN only players experiencing this for the first time) OTL Here's to hoping we don't have to sit through another useless 100 parts of Nothing... The end of the book 7 chapter 12 part 3 (yeesh, that's a mouthful) update gives me some hope at least; it looks like there's going to be actual danger moving forward!

Brushing aside works that contain canonical character death, probably a place where the water touches the sky, even though it’s an ambiguous ending.

I don’t know if there’s one with an ending that’s more definitively happy than everything else, but bombshell has a very fun, flirty ending.
8. do you get hate on fics?
No outright hate, but I have received a handful of comments that basically amounted to “what you wrote in this story isn’t to my tastes and I'm going to tell you why you should've written what I wanted to read,” which. Y’know. Dldr 🙃
9. do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I do, though I’ve never publicly posted anything more explicit than a fade-to-black. Mostly I’ve written collaborative scenes with friends, either full-blown role-play style or more spur-of-the-moment snapshots than highly structured, fully fleshed out scenes. If I’m writing by myself, I tend to lean harder toward sensual and less toward outright E-rated PWP.
10. do you write crossovers?
Not in the strictest sense, although I’ve thrown ideas around with friends, absolutely. I’m more inclined to full-on AUs (e.g., the DBH characters in the Star Wars universe but not interacting with all of the canon SW characters). I tend to lose interest in projects too quickly to sustain crossovers or AUs of significant size.

Absolutely, it's actually my preferred way to write.
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
Starkiller/Juno was a formative one for me.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?
The Skyrim rewrite. I have a solid 25,000-plus words hanging around, but they barely scratch the surface of the canon story, and I don’t play the game anymore, so. It languishes. I occasionally reread the Battle of Whiterun scene I wrote, though, because I do love it v much.
16. What are your writing strengths?
A tightly bound trinity of subtext, showing instead of telling, and descriptions. I always joke I never write text, I only write subtext. Learning how to tell sometimes instead of showing everything has been. a struggle. When I know the characters really well and can hear them clearly, my dialogue’s also excellent.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Follow-through’s the biggest one. I tend to get bored and thus uninspired fairly easily, so I usually need a strict externally imposed deadline or someone (like a coauthor) who’s otherwise waiting on my finishing a given piece for me to push through to the end. Plotting the final quarter of stories tends to give me a lot of trouble if I don’t come up with the ending right away. If I don’t know where I’m aiming, I wander aimlessly before almost inevitably moving on to another project. This is why most of my solo projects are relatively small.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Nuclear launch codes. No, seriously, it can work so, so, SO well, in VERY limited, bite-size pieces. Unless the work is intended for readers who are familiar with the languages being used, I prefer to see alternate languages used as flavor text only.

Probably Star Wars? Self-insert territory ahoy 😂
20. Favourite fic you've written?
Am I allowed to say a WIP that most people haven’t seen? No? Probably thermal equilibria, chapter two specifically. The dialogue tickles me every time I reread it.

Sammy being joeys assistant headcanons?
Alright! Since we've already had asks about Sammy helping Joey with eldritch magic specifically, I'm going to try and make this one more canon-compliant. Here we go!
-Sammy had long struggled to retain employment before Joey Drew Studios thanks to his attitude and angry outbursts. Joey tried to make Sammy feel like he understood him and would give him the recognition that no one else would. As a result, Sammy was ready to do anything to keep his position, even things he wasn't totally comfortable with. Be Joey's personal assistant for job security and a big pay raise? Well, who was he to say no?
-Sammy's assistant duties were essentially whatever Joey decided he needed in the moment. Joey needs someone to stay late so he can bounce ideas off of him? Someone to do his grocery shopping because he has other things to do? Cover someone's shift to make deadlines? Just some companionship? Sammy was the first person he asked.
-One of Sammy's assistant duties was spying on anyone Joey was paranoid of, especially GENT. Sammy recorded a lot of information about how GENT were creating life and whatnot, but Joey didn't care about the how, only that life was being created. Sammy learned fairly quickly to keep his concerns about GENT to himself, as they would only fall on deaf ears. He also pried for information on some other employees that Joey was paranoid of, such as Dot and Norman, on Joey's orders. Joey's paranoia caused some loud, dramatic fights between the two of them.
-One positive to being Joey's assistant: Joey caught on to Sammy's ink illness and managed to get Sammy treated. Sammy still has delusions and hallucinations at times and was left with limited stamina and immune system, but Joey was able to keep Sammy's illness from getting worse and destroying his body and sanity. It's become another point of "only I can understand you and put up with you."
-After the studio shut down, Joey was desperate to keep any trace of the old studio near. That included Sammy. By now, Sammy had disabilities from ink and truly did believe that no one else was likely to put up with him, so he followed Joey to other ventures. Joey's TV show included music written by Sammy, and the crew knew to come to Sammy when Joey was going through his hallucinations. By this point, they were living together and attached at the hip. Thankfully, however, Sammy never put on the glasses as both of them were afraid of what it might do considering Sammy's pre-existing conditions.
-While Joey never hurt Sammy while hallucinating, it was still terrifying for Sammy. Eventually, Sammy left while Joey was having an episode and went to his family to try and sort his life out. It had all just become too frightening for him to stay, no matter what leaving might mean for his life.

• Kabuto is a very work efficient man, he’s a protectionist and likes to complete things as quickly as possible rather than leaving them unfinished for too long even if there’s no deadline.
• If he finds that his assistant is becoming stressed or overwhelmed with work, he will also become stressed since work might not be able to be done in the time frame Kabuto has set for himself and if it’s not done then it will ruin the rest of his plans.
• But he acknowledges that working in research and science can be very stressful and difficult at times, he knows he shouldn’t waste any time worrying and will immediately comfort his assistant as soon as possible.
“Hey now, you seem quite uncomfortable. Is there anything I can do to help so that we can get this project out of the way?”
• He will encourage them to do their studies by doing it with them to make it easier or by doing his own studies beside them to keep them company.
•Like a teacher or mentor, he will guide them but won’t do their work for them as he feels his assistant needs to do it themselves to learn from it.
“Like this— Now, I can’t do it for you but I can certainly help you figure it out yourself.”
• Theres a couple of ways Kabuto may be helpful. If he feels they are distracted or unfocused he will let them do it on their own time.
“Don’t stress about it. How about you do this whenever you can? Yes, I know you have a lot left to do but nothing will be done if we spend time panicking. Do a little today and by this week you’ll have completed all of it.”
• For migraine, headaches, or issues with pain, he will make sure they are properly cared for before they return back to work.
“A migraine? Well then, let’s take a break and I will get you some medication to help. Why don’t you go lay down for now? I can’t have you working when you’re not at your best now can I?”
• He does not like to have his assistant work when they themselves are not doing well, however, he may push them a little even if they’re uncomfortable but usually he can tell how far he can push their limits.
“I see you’re having trouble, hm? I’m sure you can do it. I’m sure that after your done you’ll be rewarded with a nice rest.”
• After working, he’ll praise them for their efforts.
“You did a great job today. I’m glad you where able to keep yourself on track even when you felt like you couldn’t.”
• Depending on how he’s feeling after he’s completed his own research for the day, he may reward his assistant with a message to ease any tension in their back or may spend time with them.

Massive Russian hack on government database shows cracks in Ukraine's digitalization drive

At the start of December, Ukrainians suddenly found themselves unable to sell cars, file legal claims, or register marriages through Ukraine’s recently digitized government registries.
Cybersecurity specialist and frequent coordinator of Ukrainian hackers, Karla Wagner, noticed when she went to register an NGO through the Ukrainian Justice Ministry.
“I was getting inconsistent results from the Justice Ministry website; I was able to submit the document, but I was not able to digitally sign it. And at first, I was annoyed because I’m thinking, yeah, this is a crappy system,” says Wagner.
“I was getting different results every time, from timeouts to errors to ‘something didn’t seem to work right, please try again later.’”
The Justice Ministry on Dec. 19 formally announced that a Russian hack had taken a laundry list of critical government databases that had been put under the Justice Ministry offline. The databases contain sensitive information from property ownership to biometric data to tax records.
Relevant Ukrainian offices quickly called it an act of war from Russia. “The information space is one of the key directions of the enemy’s attacks,” wrote the State Communications Service, the national cybersecurity agency, in a statement provided to the Kyiv Independent.
“Russian hackers, who have become full-fledged participants in this war, are constantly getting better, improving their toolkits, tactics and strategy of operations.” The statement contained no information on the technical details as to how the systems were compromised.
XakNet, a hacking group previously tied to Russian intelligence, took credit for the attack, posting on Telegram data they claim to have hacked from the Ukrainian civil registry. The hackers claimed to have deleted at least some of the registry data.
The Justice Ministry has since announced that all its state registries were ready to operate but that access to some registers was still limited, as their data still needs to be updated. Access to government services through the Diia app would be available in the near future, the ministry said on Jan. 20.
The hack posed a major informational threat, highlighting how vulnerable government and Ukrainians’ personal data is to cyber attacks. In pushing to digitize its services quickly, the government also may have taken shortcuts that opened the door to digital onslaughts. Attacks of these kinds also erode public trust in the government, experts say.
The core problem, as Wagner diagnoses, was the pace at which Ukraine rewired systems ranging from passports to tax payments into a single digital portal, all under the auspices of the Justice Ministry, in order to show positive results to foreign observers.
“It was very, very, very, very, very fast progress,” says Wagner. “And any IT project that has the heat on to make fast progress will cut corners where needed and save resources where needed with the best of intentions, which is meeting the deadlines and satisfying the requirements. (That) created not only a long string of vulnerabilities but also over-centralization in tech admin infrastructure.”

Mykyta Knysh, who formerly worked in cybersecurity for Ukraine’s security services, the SBU, and currently runs the hacking collective “HackYourMama,” says the agencies involved should have known better.
“I understand that the Justice Ministry doesn’t necessarily have to have this kind of expertise, but the State Office of Security and Communications, the Digital Transformation Ministry, the SBU — they should have that expertise,” says Knysh.
What was hacked and what the hackers could do next
Hardly the most eye-catching of Russia’s military operations against Ukraine since the full-scale invasion, the attack nonetheless presents a serious threat to Ukraine’s security.
“If the Russians occupy more territory they can use that information, maybe to threaten or blackmail or defraud people who fall under them,” says Knysh.
Knysh hails from Kupiansk, a town in eastern Kharkiv Oblast that currently lies within five miles of Russian positions.
The registries attacked included information like individuals’ addresses and assets, as well as familial relationships. It is not yet known whether the hackers involved have actually re-written the information for certain civilians. Knysh fears the hackers may have forged digital identities to grant Russian agents access to the front.
The hack “provides opportunities for Russian intelligence to obtain additional information about Ukrainian military and civilian government employees, and identify vulnerable or otherwise suitable people in Ukraine who can be recruited or coerced into conducting espionage activities and sabotage,” analysts at cybersecurity firm Flashpoint wrote in a comments to the Kyiv Independent.
The hack “provides opportunities for Russian intelligence to obtain additional information about Ukrainian military and civilian government employees, and identify vulnerable or otherwise suitable people in Ukraine who can be recruited or coerced into conducting espionage activities and sabotage.”
“However, more likely uses of such information include conducting future cyberattacks on other organizations in Ukraine using the information from public registries for reconnaissance, identity theft, social engineering, doxxing, harassment, and crafting convincing phishing emails,” Flashpoint wrote.

Oleh Burba, who works as a component leader for EU4DigitalUA and coordinates registry integration says that while anything is theoretically possible if Russians have the access, there is currently no confirmed information they have changed anything in the registries.
Though any such impacts have yet to materialize, the attack has already proved a major inconvenience to civil society, which Wagner sees as the biggest issue.
“You attack the Justice Ministry and the day-to-day business of government cannot go on,” says Wagner. “Okay, nobody's going to die if I can't register my NGO. But it erodes confidence in the Ukrainian government.”

For Russia, Wagner considers it an extension of a propaganda war, similar to bombardments of Ukrainian national monuments.
“You don't need to hit strategic targets in a country. All you have to do is make it appear to be ungovernable.”
XakNet hackers also claimed to have destroyed backup data in servers in Poland. In its message the hacker group mocks Ukraine’s government, saying: “It’s very telling to store government data on foreign storage — that’s what independence Ukrainian-style looks like, apparently.”
Single point of failure
The systems affected were under the umbrella of massive digitization of government services that has taken place under the administration of President Volodymyr Zelensky, particularly his Digital Transformation Minister Mikhail Fedorov.
This digitization has been enormously popular, largely seen as reducing opportunities for low-level corruption among a patchwork of regional agencies ruled by unscrupulous bureaucrats.
But cybersecurity experts question the wisdom of the technical centralization of these systems within one office, with Knysh jokingly dubbing Fedorov’s agency the “Digital Degradation Ministry.”
“At the beginning of the full-scale invasion we realized that Ukraine's digital infrastructure was overly centralized, according to the old Soviet model,” says Wagner. “Centralization and single points of failure are a well-known anti-pattern. And it's highly vulnerable.”

“My personal opinion was that (the hack) was through this system, ‘Trembita,’“ says Knysh. Trembita is a core data management system that provides the backend for government systems, specifically Diia, an app that has digitized government services like passports and tax paying.
Knysh helped organize a hack on Russia’s government services portal last year that among other impacts, immobilized digital voting.
Independent hackers have been warning government agencies about the centralization of everyone’s information under Diia since 2021.
Trembita manages the digital communication between different registries. “Trembita is a trip by rail,” wrote Burba in an op-ed for Economic Pravda defending the system in May, describing the registries as cities, their digital links as railroads, and individual identifying codes as tickets.

“Trembita specifically in this situation was not damaged or broken, it functioned just as it should have functioned and protected the information exchange between these registries,” Burba told the Kyiv Independent.
Knysh is especially concerned that authorities provided no details on the hack, citing “a whole monopoly on what they are saying.” Given that hackers re-use hacking techniques, he was concerned for other nations.
It’s not a problem limited to the Zelensky cyber team and Digital Transformation Ministry. Having worked for the Ukrainian SBU under the Poroshenko administration, Knysh says “Poroshenko was almost just the same,” and acknowledged the need for a stronger digitized and federalized system of managing data.
“Before Trembita, there was total chaos,” says Knysh. “But then they said ‘you will have a government of smartphones’ and now we have a government of smartphones open to the SBU and HUR,” he continued, referencing Ukrainian intelligence agencies.
Hackers can find backdoors left open to governments, as for example a series of legal battles to compel Apple to extract data for U.S. intelligence agencies laid out.
Officials are touting an overhaul, with Justice Minister Olha Stefanishyna dubbing a pending rebuild into a “Pentagon of registries.”
What exactly a “Pentagon of registries” means is unclear. For Wagner, it’s fairly simple: “Nothing.”
“It’s not an emotionally mature approach,” says Wagner, miming beating her chest.
“I heard this (Pentagon of Registries) and I thought, “Go out and say honestly, ‘we don’t know how to make a safe system.’”
