Hello, this a regularly scheduled health update!
I'm in a mood again. I feel like this happens a lot but yet I can't stop it. I just don't want to do anything. There's stuff I need to do I want done. Hell, there's even things I want to do but I just can't make myself do it. I'm hungry but I don't feel like eating either I just want to lay down for awhile but I know it would cut into the rest of my day and I would regret it. I guess either way I'm not accomplishing anything.
I wish I had some edible still they really help even out my moodiness. I've been wearing these stress patches with valerian, passion flower, and hops. So far I think it's helpful and I'm going to keep using them, also a sticker on my wrist I can't feel is a super easy way to do a little bit for my mental health. It's also the time of day where I need to take vitamins and my weekly vitamin d prescription. My twice daily antibiotics say not to take within 2 hours of vitamin supplements. So it's been tricky to remember a vitamin in the middle of the day. I think that could help restore some energy. Also if I just got up and ate something would probably help too...
I'm going to start taking omega 3 7 and 9s so *hopefully * I don't get the seasonal depression this year. My mood might not be great but I sure don't feel like I did when I was depressed. At least not yet? Anyways I'm trying to be proactive about that. Also when we pick up Loki next week I'll be outside walking him everyday along with using my elliptical so I just need an upper body work out and the exercise aspect of my health will be in check.
I've been doing really well at not buying junk food or not ordering junk when I go out. I've always struggled to maintain an appetite so sometimes I do eat junk just because it's better than eating nothing. I'm trying to be gentle with myself because it took a very long time to develop a realistic relationship with food for me. I'm down to 116 but I'm sure that's not accurate as I was dehydrated and needed to eat again. I only weigh myself about once a week because I'm scared to obsess over it. Also things are going well!! 24 pounds down just from healthy eating is amazing. Now that I'm exercising again I'm hopeful things will continue to improve.
My weight was causing health problems and I need to go back for more blood work I'm just hoping to lose enough weight to have actually resolved my problems by the time I go. I think my physical health in improving though just due to the fact I'm feeling better. I've even been able to skip the muscle relaxers and sleeping pills sometimes.
I've also gotten annoyed at the amount of pills I have to take (again) and so I've been trying things other than my prescriptions:
- Icey-hot is good on my back but I can't use it on my entire legs which sucks.
-Arnica pellets combined with ibuprofen seems to work better than either alone.
-Moon mints I'm very unsure of. They taste fucking awesome though.
- Essential oils are fun but no where near as helpful as people want you to believe.
I'm thinking about buying a melatonin vape because I'm so tired of all the pills. I have some that dissolve in your mouth but I don't like them.
I've also been drink clam magnesium drink for my muscles post work out and for better sleep. It's too soon to say if it helps. My muscles definitely feel weak but not sore? So maybe it's good.
Also I got these little silicone rings you clip on your septum that smells like lavender and the other one is lemon.
So I've been doing a lot of shit in addition to spiritual reading, meditation, sensory regulation, and other self care type things.
SO if I'm messed up it is not for lack of trying.

Cleaning - my skin is happy
So I have a 4 day weekend, which is great because work can be exhausting. However I know my skin was going to get irritated because my house is cluttered.
I know allergens and irritants do trigger my skin. I know eczema is an inflammatory condition. So are painful menstrual cramps, which I used to struggle a lot with. Now since I started taking vitamin D and fish oil for inflammation, my cramps are much more tolerable, to the point where I feel fatigued and sleepy and some pain (I don't feel like the women running around in white pants in the commercials) but it's much better than how I felt in the past, where I would stay home from work/classes laying in bed crying. I know that if I reduced my inflammation, there is something that causes eczema and not period cramps that I haven't addressed it. And of course, allergens and irritants are definitely a trigger.
My diet has been good and I'm eating anti-inflammatory foods and I'm drinking a lot of matcha tea. I'm taking vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids for anti-inflammatory nutrients, and spirulina (I've gotten used to the taste). I'm not eating a lot of sugar and junk. I know diet is a huge component when it comes to inflammation, but it's not 100%. Though it's definitely a huge important factor which is more important than others. In fact I might even cancel my appointment and speak to my aunt about this.
But there is most certainly an allergen component, because my skin clears up at work where there is good ventilation. My face was so red yesterday and I took an allegra pill and applied some benadryl gel to my hands, face, and neck. My mom, who also deals with bad allergies and had severe eczema when she was my age, told me that would help. This morning I woke up and spent the entire day cleaning my room. Removing a ton of clutter and stuff I do not need. Sometimes it goes way beyond just vacuuming, dusting, and running an air filter. It needs hours of decluttering. I'm so satisfied and relieved. I got rid of so much stuff I do not need. My skin feels better already. I feel like I can breathe in my room.
On top of my anti-inflammatory diet and supplementation, my next step is to declutter my house and just organize and being up to date with cleaning. This will help so much. My skin is less angry at me. So diet and decluttering are 2 main goals I want to develop for now.
Other sources of irritation are gut inflammation and toxin exposure, which is why I take the spirulina. Taking that doesn't require as much effort as cooking and buying anti-inflammatory foods and deep cleaning my house. But it is worth scheduling an appointment with my doctor to discuss all this. And how I can guarantee a healthy gut and toxin removal. Again it's as simple as finding a supplement and taking it regularly. It's not something that requires active maintenance like an anti-inflammatory diet and decluttering. Nor do I think they are as important. But it's worth asking about both.
The next step would be to do autism testing. It's quite hard to book an appointment, unfortunately. Not many offices near me offer it. But I know it will work out.
Final steps would be to consistently workout and go to a dentist with my mom.
So overall the main goals would be to stick to my anti-inflammatory diet and to declutter and clean my house regularily. Then we'll see where the next step takes me. I don't want spend a lot of time, energy, and money on seeing doctors and my mom and sister have been more helpful in many ways than doctors have been. Such as recommending an anti-inflammatory diet and how to effectively clean and manage allergies. My dad told me about intermittent fasting and may aunt about spirulina. Sometimes our loved ones know best.
It can also help to switch to less irritating cleaning and skin/hair products like soaps, cleansers, shampoos, body washes, deodorants, laundry detergents, and dish soaps. Even maybe a shower water filter attachment. This is another goal to look into and I'm not really good and finding alternatives. I'll see.

Today I went to my post-post-op. They told me everything looks good, my incisions are all closed up, and that I can start to put weight and walk on my leg. I’m so happy. I really tried my best to heal up well, and I think it’s paying off. Probiotics, vitamin D and calcium (in pills and my orange juice, which I started buying and drinking daily), lowering my sodium for my blood pressure, range of motion exercises. Babying the hell out of it, eating way better than I ever have. Now it’s going well, and I can start walking again.
When I do take steps, it feels like driving a car that’s been rotting in the garage for two decades. My foot (mot what broke) hurts, my ankle can barely keep me up because my calf is so weak, and I’m just a bit nervous too. Progress will be made in time though. It’s what I do.
Construction work is being done on the apartment Ellie and I were going to move in to at the start of the summer, so we are living in a temporary apartment. It is tiny, and kind of really shitty, but we are making the best of it. We were going to move last Saturday, but they were also doing construction in the building we were currently living in. They told us they were going to cut off the water, so we decided to expedite the move on short notice.
All four of our parents showed up Thursday evening to help us move, and I am so grateful for that. We have very supportive parents. We had been packing for the past week or so, little by little, moving some stuff that we could early. We got all moved Thursday night in about 3 hours of work. I was of course crippled, so I supervised and helped with what should be taken where.
The temporary place has the smallest kitchen I have ever seen. And the outlets don’t work in one of the rooms. And there is a safety light right outside one of the windows in our living/bedroom. So we are doing our best. We got blackout curtains (and installed the curtain rods), added some RGBLED string lights around the top, got new betting, and are going to get some tiling for the kitchen backsplash. It is currently bare with some gross adhesive on it. We are fixing it up. We will be here for one to three months, so we might as well make it nice. I like it more now that we have added stuff, but the kitchen is unfixable. There is no microwave.
I miss sodium foods.
Colby moved into his new apartment 2 minutes from where we work. Ellie and I visited last Sunday because he came to our place Saturday night to see our new place. I start working on June 5th and I am so excited. I love using my skills to make things, but I often have nothing to make. No ideas. But there is no shortage of tasks where we work. Boy howdy there is a backlog of years of tasks. I love it, I get to sit in an office and code for 40 hours a week and make a bunch of money. Nothing ridiculous, but Ellie and I will definitely be very very comfy, especially considering we don’t pay rent.
Fuck, I am so excited. Making money, coding, living with her. We opened up checking and savings accounts together, and I sold the stock my mom bought me and invested it in a mutual fund. I feel like I can really start to live now. The tutorial is over and this is where the fun begins.
Tonight is my first night sleeping with a bare right foot since the night of April 5th, so I’m a bit nervous and happy about that. We will see how it goes.

Ana people, here are some nutrients you NEED:
note: "take with food" means that something is FAT soluble, and won't break down unless you EAT FATS WITH IT. Almost every vitamin you need is fat soluble so please, take these with food.
-PROTEIN- You there- yes you- you are protein deficient!! i just know it. Eat more protein!!!!!
-tryptophan- found in meat, but you can also get this in many protein powders. DO NOT BUY A PROTEIN POWDER IF IT DOES NOT HAVE TRYPTOPHAN. Tryptophan is converted into 5-htp, then serotonin, then melatonin. Aka, if you're deficient in tryptophan (most people are), you'll likely develop depression and/or a sleep disorder. I think you can buy this in pills too, but don't forget to get lots of protein still if you do.
-5-HTP- use if you have depression+anxiety and tryptophan isn't helping or you just wanna be extra sure.
-iron- most multivitamins have 100% DV of iron. Do not take with calcium as iron and calcium both inhibit the absorption of eachother. Another way you can get more iron is eating high-iron foods like leafy greens or cooking on uncoated cast iron cookware.
-calcium- DO NOT SLEEP ON CALCIUM- you won't know you're deficient until you decelop osteoporosis. Take capsule(s) or drink plenty of milk/almond milk at least 1-2 hours APART from consuming iron.
-vitamin D- you can't overdose on this. I usually take 3-4 times the serving size because most people are severely deficient in this.
-magnesium GLYCENATE- (not to be confused with other forms of magnesium, which are not absorbed and are generally used as gentle laxatives!) apparently magnesium can help with just about every mental illness ever, and again, most people are deficient in this.
-biotin- found in hair, skin, and nails supplements. If you have an ED and notice hair, skin, and nails suffering, EAT WAY MORE PROTEIN and also take these supplements :) Most women's supplements include biotin.
-melotonin- yall just take melotonin. Sleep is so so so so so so important whether or not you have a disorder.

We've been doing that for (2) seasons, I'd love if season 3 could be like, his parents adjusting to this and trying way harder to learn more and accept it (and the shenanigans that could come from that) and for fun, if he didn't wipe the students memories, it could be him being popular for a while, then everyone slowly realizing, oh, he's still Danny. Like. he might have ghost powers but hes Just The Same Guy instead of putting him on a pedestal (and seeing them all try and help him hide it from the giw/people who don't know!!)
-fuck they didn't even explain WHY he wiped everyone except sam, tucker and jazz's memories. he just Did It right when his parents were saying they loved/accepted him!! and sam and tucker didnt question it at all!!! HELLO??? very annoyed about this turn of events.
-anyway. onto season 3! I know its shorter than the first two seasons, and is the last season... I might just do it in 2 bursts if I can... :3c depends on the episodes' content and how much I want to say about each!

49. how did you get your biggest scar? Okay storytime. I was about 11 years old and we were playing on one of these zipline things (see picture). Ours had an artifical grassmat tho. So basically when I was younger we used to do this thing called the superman. Where you hang on the stool in like a superman way. which is fine if you are 6 and light as a feather, but not when you are eleven and getting kind of tall and heavy. Basically the first time I did it was fine, just a bit close to the ground but oh well. The second time my friend was holding on to the zipline and running while pushing me and she kept pushing when I went back to that little hill. I was too heavy, going too fast and bare in mind there was artificial grass involved. My chin and shoulder hit the hill and I grazed my chin and shoulder. My chin luckily didn’t scar but my shoulder did. So that’s how I got my biggest scar 🙂

If had my pills, I wake up at 4 am. If I didn’t use pills but had migraine I wake up every 2 hours. If didn’t need the pills, I’m up at 7 am

Sunrises - especially in the mountains *-* <3.

Just one, fricking hot x_x (but then, about 3 or 4 am it gets cold).

I usually eat in a bowl :v The fancy plates are for special occasions, they’re blue and have nice chinese art :D

Beacuse of the works I usually get, my arms are covered with scars xD. Most of them are blur beacuse of time, but my biggest scar is in the back of my left leg. A little accident with my bike, I hit my leg with the bar for the feet of the passenger. I managged to stop the bike, but I couldn’t use it any more because my leg was throbing and the pain x_x it’s been about 5 years but the scar is still there, the muscle is stiff in that part of my leg :v
50. What did you do today that made someone happy?
Listen to my brothers’ troubles, they are teenagers and I’m glad that they talk to me, specially if they can feel lighter after n.n I also like to tell jokes (usually bad ones XD I’m not really good at it, but I try) so everyone in my home is smilling n.n

Many pharmaceutical-grade companies have higher regulation and are continually researching and testing the efficacy of products, such as Thorne Research and Metagenics.
2. How is Your Digestion?
Before we even talk any more about supplementing properly, let’s first talk about your digestion—how is it? If you are not digesting your nutrients in the first place, than the best supplements you take matter very little (unless they are digestive supplements).
That said, boosting your supplement (and nutrient) power with some helpful digestive practices could be the secret sauce for getting the most out of any supplements you take, including the basics like:
Chewing your food well, drinking water throughout the day.
Refraining from processed and refined foods. Slowing down while you eat, eating healthy fats and foods containing fat soluble vitamins (especially Vitamin D, Vitamin K and Vitamin A).
Reaching for organic produce and grass-fed/pastured meats as much as possible.
Resorting first to investing in digestive best supplements, before spending money on any other supplements (that may or may not digest properly).  
A quality probiotic, plus potentially some digestive enzymes, HCL (hydrochloric acid) could be the “secret” sauce for you, particularly if leaky gut, digestive distress, or other gut-related inflammation (like allergies, headaches, food sensitivities, blood sugar imbalances, etc.) are at play. Ensure your digestion is up to speed (daily bowel movements, decreased bloating/gas, etc.)
3. More is Not Necessarily Better
More always seems better right? So, more greens and more working out. Additionally, more kombucha as well as more vitamins and minerals. But it’s not always the case. When we take more than we need—of any best supplements for too long toxicity can happen (overload), and have the opposite effects we originally intended in the first place.
The alternative? Maintenance supplementation—using best supplements generally as a baseline and extra little booster to the foods you do eat. Maintenance supplementation involves supplementing with selected micronutrients that are difficult to obtain even in the context of your nutrient-dense whole-foods diet. Best supplements in this category are generally taken in small doses, indefinitely and vary from person to person, depending on your body’s needs.
For instance, I take a daily B-Vitamin Complex, Cod Liver Oil and Zinc supplement because of my history of being low in the nutrients these supplements provide as well as noting a significant difference in how I feel when I take them (way better).
All this said, there IS such thing as therapeutic supplementation—a short-term dosing of supplements to help boost any deficiencies you may have—often times in “therapeutic dose,” or higher amount.
For example, you might take a round of “anti-microbial” (gut killing) supplements for a solid 30-60 days if you’ve been diagnosed with SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). Also, you might kick up your vitamin C a notch if you feel a cold coming on. A healthcare practitioner can help guide you in therapeutic supplementation.
4. Multi-Vitamins Aren’t All They Are Cracked Up to Be
Taking a multi? You may want to think twice. The problem with multivitamins is that they often contain too little of beneficial nutrients (like magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin K2). Too much of potentially toxic nutrients like folic acid, calcium, iron, and vitamin E. This means that multivitamins can cause nutrient imbalances that contribute to disease.
Research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (2013) found that multivitamins were ineffective in preventing cancer, cognitive decline and other claims multi-vitamins had been known to make. And another review in the Journal of the American Medical Association, that evaluated more than 68 trials with 230,000 participants, found that treatment with synthetic vitamins (i.e. fake, cheap vitamins) often found in multivitamins (such as beta carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E) may actually increase the risk of death.
The consensus on taking a multi-vitamin? Save your money, and instead, reach for the actual single vitamins and minerals that you DO need. 
5. Observe
So how do you know what vitamins or minerals you really do need in the first place—and is it even worth it? Vitamin and mineral supplementation CAN be tremendously beneficial. Particularly, given the lack of nutrient-density in much of our modern-day food supply and overburden of outside toxins—given you do invest in quality supplements; you lack certain micro-nutrients in your diet; and you are taking the right supplements for your body.
Interestingly, it is always advised, for starters, you work with a knowledgeable healthcare provider—such as a nutritionist or functional medicine practitioner—who can help you navigate what your body needs. However, simply being in touch with your body can point you in a good direction.
Here are common signs and symptoms, and the minerals and vitamins most often associated with them:
Craving chocolate often?—Magnesium (Topical Oil, Natural Calm, Greens, Raw Nuts/Seeds, Raw Cacao)
Neeeeeed Coffee or Caffeine?—Amino Acids (Tyrosine, DLPA), Sodium (Sea Salt), Phosphorus (pinto beans, pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts, lentils)
White Spots on Fingernails? Zinc deficiency
Fatigue, Muscle Aches or Weakness?—Vitamin D , Iron (grass-fed red meat, organ meat, shellfish, canned sardines, broccoli, kale, spinach, *never supplement with iron unless you are extremely low)
Low Energy, Anxiety, and/or Anemia—Vitamin B-12
Skin Breakouts, Acne, Inflammation– Omega 3, Digestive Enzymes
Dry Skin, Wrinkles—Biotin, Sulfur (egg yolks, meat, poultry, and fish, garlic, onions, brussels sprouts, asparagus, kale, sauerkraut).
Thyroid Imbalances (enlarged thyroid), Shortness of Breath, Weight Gain/Weight Plateaus—Iodine (iodized salt, plain yogurt, fish, seaweed, pastured eggs)
Suppressed Immunity (frequently sick)—Vitamin A (Cod Liver Oil), Omega 3’s, ProbioticsConstipation- Zinc, B-12
6. Test, Don’t Guess
In addition, to observation and checking in with yourself (signs and symptoms), testing—(both lab and functional evaluations) conducted by a nutritionist, functional medicine practitioner or other healthcare provider can help take the guesswork out of “what to take.”
Instead of supplementing with a cocktail of nutrients you think you do need, get some blood work, or other necessary clinical labs run to address other imbalances (such as gut-health or hormone needs) in order to determine a no-nonsense nutritional therapy supplement protocol to help bolster your bod back to it’s happy place.
7. The Bottom Line: Get as Many Nutrients from Food As Possible
Best supplements can be great, but nothing beats real food. Aim for food and nutrient density (fresh organic produce, pastured and grass-fed meats, organic organ meats, wild caught fish and seafood, quality fats—avocados, coconut oil, ghee, pastured butter, fermented foods) and variety to get the diversity of minerals and vitamins you need.
Sure chicken, broccoli and sweet potatoes are healthy, but when we eat the same foods day in and day out, are we truly being healthy?—Getting the diversity of health-giving nutrients our body desires?
In addition, Whole foods are more effective than supplements in meeting nutrient needs.
For example, cancer-fighting antioxidant-rich berries, spinach and broccoli. These are tremendously more effective than any synthesized supplemental form of Vitamins and Minerals we could take. Or a balanced plate at meal times throughout the day. This is consist of proteins, veggies and healthy fats. This balanced plate can provide a pure amount of vitamins and minerals you may try to get in your multi-vitamin.
Ultimately, aim to get the majority of your nutrients from food as possible. Use supplementation wisely to help re-calibrate the body when deficiency is warranted.

Hi! I hope you are doing well. I have been following you a long time and I remember you saying awhile ago that you have seasonal depression. I have depression in general but I definitely feel the change of seasons especially when the days are shorter. Do you have any tips for getting through the winter and dealing with seasonal symptoms? I am taking vitamin D but I don't really notice a difference. I have thought of trying one of those therapy lights but am skeptical. Thanks for your time!
Hi! There are definitely things I do, but it’s a constant maintenance process, so I do have a tendency to sulk and not follow my own advice. I’m fortunate that my housemate/best friend/platonic life partner gets on my case when I start doing that, though, so if you have someone you trust to check in with you it really helps. (Some of the things, like meditation and journalling, might be something you can coordinate with a friend to check in with each other about). I’ve ended up with a bundle of tools which I use to varying degrees, and winter is still rubbish, but it feels a lot more survivable than it used to. 
Here are my tips, in order of cost:
1. Have a regular bedtime at a sensible time. Mine is 22:30, although I don’t stick to it perfectly. A really good routine is turning off all screens at 10, getting ready for bed, and reading in bed until no later than 11. I often end up watching TV until 10:30 and then going straight to bed, but I think that’s better than working or messing about online. I think that dark, short days messing with your internal clock is a big part of seasonal depression, so imposing some structure helps.
2. Start and maintain a gratitude or positivity journal. All you need to do every day is make a quick note of things that were positive. (“I went for coffee with Hannah” “My new trousers are super comfy” “I saw a cute bird!”) It takes about five minutes and it really cuts through the bland “everything is awful” mindset that depression tricks you into. Some days it’s harder than others, but I try to write at least three things every day. I currently have this one, but I’ll probably just get a generic mini notebook when I run out of pages. 
3. Practice mindfulness meditation. I started this for anxiety, but if you consistently practice (that’s really important) meditating gives you a lot more control over any kind of overwhelming feeling or emotion. Again, this is something I am bad at doing myself, but if you can manage to set aside ten minutes three times a week or so, it makes it a lot easier to say “okay, time to move on and think about something else” when you’re really low. I started off using the free trial of the Headspace app (which is a good introduction, but I don’t like the guy’s voice and the subscription is SUPER expensive) and now use the Buddhify app (one-off purchase of about $5). I’ve also heard that Insight Timer (free) is good.
4. Using a daylight lamp consistently is helpful, but it can be a pain in the butt if you don’t already have a morning routine which involves sitting in a specific place (e.g. for breakfast or work) where you can set up the lamp. You have to commit to using it daily, for a decent chunk of time (for me 40 minutes was best). I’m not using mine (FYI: this reasonably inexpensive one) at the moment because I’m responding well to my current medication. If I weren’t so lazy and used the damn thing, I’d probably feel even better. It’s hard to tell the difference from day to day when you’re starting out, but after I’d been using mine regularly I could REALLY tell when I hadn’t used it, so I’ll probably go back to using it for a while when it gets really dark.
4a. Daylight bulbs are a related option which mainly help with motivation and energy levels. I put daylight bulbs in my ceiling light year-round, which makes it feel like it’s brighter outsideand tricks me into thinking the days are a bit longer in winter. Make sure you’ve also got regular bulbs in side lamps in the evening, though, or you won’t feel able to get to sleep.
4b. I have never regretted buying my dawn simulator alarm clock, which I got after two years of wanting one but refusing to spend the money. If you have to get out of bed at a set time every morning they’re fantastic–they’re more a “functioning adult” tool than a mood one, in my experience. But I went from having to use half my day’s spoons to pry myself out of bed whilst wailing to just being a regular grump who hit the snooze button once or twice. I kind of wish I’d shelled out for a slightly fancier one so I could use my own music as a wake-up tone, but it’s fine.
5. Medication and supplements can really help. I know that especially for US peeps this can be a ridiculously expensive proposition, but if your objections are based on the idea that medication will make you numb or dull your creative edge or amounts to some kind of failure, and you haven’t tried antidepressants before, please try to put them aside. [EDIT: For the most part, this attitude is perpetuated by people who have never experienced ongoing mental health issues. A friend pointed out to me that some people DO have bad experiences with antidepressants, and in fairness, my own first experience with citalopram made me feel pretty numb! Those are real experiences. But popular culture seems to run with the “pills turn you into a zombie” narrative when other medications have been hugely helpful to me. I’m really glad I didn’t write off medication as a whole based on that first antidepressant. Based on my own experience, I’d say it’s worth experimenting a little if you have a supportive doctor.]
If you cannot access prescribed medication, or the idea of “chemicals” is too intimidating, consider taking St John’s Wort (I am not a doctor, please do your own research! It did, however, work well for me). It’s a herbal remedy which is the first port of call for patients with depression here in Germany, and it has very few side effects (basically: you absolutely MUST NOT take it alongside other SSRIs, it interferes with hormonal birth control, and can make you more prone to sunburn. Always let a doctor know if they prescribe you medications on top of anything you’re already taking).
I took about 1350mg of the over-the-counter stuff for about five years and while it wasn’t a silver bullet, it REALLY took the edge off of my depression when the health service was failing to give me the support I needed. Here is a Cochrane review of 29 studies of St John’s Wort’s effectiveness. Lack of regulation is a bit of a problem in terms of not knowing the strength of what you’re taking, which is why I ended up taking three of the Boots One-a-Day extra strength tablets daily before it made much of a difference. When I got to Germany, my GP here prescribed me 900mg which was just as effective. But as I said, there are barely any side-effects and you’d have to be taking a lot more than that to overdose.
I also find vitamin D helpful, and while I’m taking vitamin B12 because I think I just have low levels of it it does boost energy levels a lot.
6. I’m aware that this one is very privilege-dependent, but if you can–take a holiday somewhere warmer and sunnier. It might be worth bearing this in mind when planning your annual holidays, if your days off/finances are limited. Don’t feel like you need to hold the trip to “awesome holiday” standards–it’s just about getting some sun on your face. Last year my partner and I picked a location based entirely on the weather report and prices not being insane (we had a holiday booked which was cancelled because the airline went under and had to rebook with three days notice) and had a super chill time in Valencia.
Okay, that got super long–I hope it was helpful! Good luck dealing with winter. I’ve had years where I really wondered how I was going to cope with the misery year on year for the rest of my life, but as my coping tools have fallen into place, it’s become easier and easier.
