The brilliant @jickdraws made this absolutely breathtaking art for chapter 8 of my fic the humble as the proudest sail! (Which should be finished in the next couple of months, if you feel like starting a longfic with an end in sight…)
It’s even more beautiful than I imagined and I’m SO in love with it. It’s like Jick reached into my head, saw exactly what I wanted, and did it even better. It’s perfect 🥰

ohoho are you looking for fic recs? please allow me to recommend (all on ao3):
for wildly hot and unbearably romantic sexiness: “lead me to the banquet hall” by obstinatrix and wishwellingtons, “anywhere you want to go” and “knowing this i will reach for you” by aria
for pitch-perfect comedy: “drinking buddies and diaries” by dove_dove, “one night in bangor (and the world’s your oyster)” by atalan
for some rpf-ish? adjacent? silliness: “deal with the devil” by thirdbird
for free therapy (i am not kidding about this): “demonology…” and “angel-centred therapy…” by nnm
if you like things darker (definitely check the tags): “the price of feeling better” by vitreous_humor and “totality” by rowenablade
and if i may be so bold, i’m quite proud of “other uses” by me (glitterary)
blessssss i live in the walls of ao3 🙏

American here who was present the first time Glitterary saw a chipmunk. It was delightful and she was very excited about the little guy!
Sometimes I see some variety of North American Little Guy (opossum, raccoon, etc. ) and I’m like “okay”
BUT THEN I start thinking about how excited somebody from not-North-America would be to see this Guy. Like, would an Australian be excited to see the only marsupial not from their country? Are there raccoons in zoos on the other side of the world that are regarded as unique and exotic creatures? Idk but it’s made me more excited to see Guys in my area.
#and now I'm more excited about chipmunks than I used to be#because hey that's a little guy! that little guy is cool even if there's a lot of similar little guys here!#some people rarely get to see that kind of little guy!

Let go of the version of yourself you are comparing yourself to
I think most people have at least one sliding doors moment: a poor financial decision, an encounter with the police, a career choice that didn't work out, an academic fuck-up, a relationship you should have left sooner. I certainly do. And you think: if only I'd made a different choice, that one time, my life would be so much better.
It's easy to blame yourself for doing the wrong thing or making the wrong choice, and I think most of us who feel that kind of guilt do eventually find a way of forgiving ourselves. We had good reasons for the choice we made at the time, even if they look foolish in hindsight. We can reason that things might have turned out the same, or worse, if we'd done what we now wish we had.
Even having forgiven myself and my youthful mistakes, though, I've only recently realised this: I have been living in the shadow of an imaginary version of myself for more than half my life. The version of me who didn't fuck up an important exam, who got the grades for her first-choice university, who therefore was able to get a better job and build on it, and is now working for the EU as some kind of fancy human rights lawyer. She's so much better than the real me, an underemployed freelance translator who has bumbled from admin job to admin job and is looking to change careers yet again.
But here's the thing: that perfect version of me is imaginary. I never think about lawyer me sitting in interminable meetings and not getting anything done! I never think of diplomat me losing her job because of Brexit! I never think about how that version of me doesn't have time for hobbies or deep friendships because her job takes up all her time and energy. She's fake! She's scamming me out of appreciating what I do have, and what I do love about my current life, and who I am.
Comparison is the thief of joy, and I have created an imaginary version of myself that I have been torturing my real self with for the past two decades.
So: if you have a sliding doors moment, and you think you've processed it, maybe take a moment to reflect on whether you are still comparing yourself to an impossible version of you or your life. Don't just forgive yourself. Put down that burden. That version of you would never have existed, even if you had done everything "right". Let yourself thrive as the person you are now.
#guess who spent an hour sobbing to her therapist about this recently#i wanted this to be a lot more concise but hey this is what you get#life advice#comparison#regret#guilt#glitterary#the version of me who became a diplomat is as real as the version of me who became an astronaut#i.e. not even slightly#and i'm not upset about not being the astronaut version of me so i need to let go of the diplomat version too#and work towards making the translator me who actually exists happier

The Night Bus to Oxford by glitterary. 1236 words. Bus scene. Some banter and a confession. Really well written.

we'll always have paris
by glitterary
The same story told once from Aziraphale's POV and once from Crowley's, each hopelessly pining for the other.
Crowley convinces Aziraphale to join him on a "work trip" to Paris, which is really just a thinly-veiled excuse to eat crepes and wander around cobbled streets. But stumbling over memories in a museum prison cell leaves them both fearing they've lost each other.

The thing is though that that’s the point. Tolkien was heavily influenced by the Anglo-Saxon works he studied and taught, and a theme running through a lot of those works is this idea of the degradation of civilisation and learning over time. Here are a few lines from the 8/9th century poem The Ruin:
Bright were the castle buildings, many the bathing-halls, high the abundance of gables, great the noise of the multitude, many a meadhall full of festivity, until Fate the mighty changed that. Far and wide the slain perished, days of pestilence came, death took all the brave men away; their places of war became deserted places, the city decayed.
From an archaeological point of view, this is a society with comparatively limited skills when it comes to building in stone surrounded by the ruins of Roman forts and villas. Anglo-Saxon society, especially in the migrations of the fifth and sixth centuries, was based on farming, and most of the old Roman structures (which were designed for military life) were inconvenient for things like animal husbandry and were abandoned. These buildings at that point were just a few centuries old, but the skills needed to maintain, restore and rebuild these structures had been lost.
As Anglo-Saxon society developed, and especially as religious learning developed in monasteries, a preoccupation arose with the possibility that those (spiritual and intellectual) gains might be lost again.
Alfred the Great, in his introduction to his translation of Pastoralis, which everyone should read, makes an urgent and impassioned point of how works need to be translated and maintained because there was once a time when people were so secure in the idea that people would always know Latin that they didn’t bother with translation, and now hardly anyone can read those books: “Our ancestors, who formerly held these places, loved wisdom, and through it they obtained wealth and left it to us. Here we can still see their footprints, but we cannot track after them."
the thing about lotr that the movies don’t convey so fully is how the story is set in an age heavily overshadowed by all the ages before. they’re constantly traveling through ruins, discussing the glory of days gone by, the empires of men are much diminished, the elves (especially galadriel) are described as seeming incongruent, frozen in time….some of the imagery is even near-apocalyptic, like the ruins of moria and of course the landscape surrounding mordor
this is a strange thought to me, somehow: that the archetypal “high fantasy” story is set at the point where the…fantasy…used to be much higher? this is not the golden age; this is a remnant
#history#archaeology#tolkien#the lord of the rings#old english#anglo saxons#oops that got longer than i intended#please note i am an archaeologist not a historian#i know these works tangentially#i'm sure i have many people on my friends list who could improve or add to this#seriously tho#in the words of my undergrad old english professor:#'alfred the great--the only english king to be called the great--BECAUSE HE WAS THE BEST'#read that introduction folks he is wonderful#glitterary
