Because it turns out I have a lot more thoughts on this.

Following Jason’s tragic death in Ethiopia, Bruce Wayne is coping extremely poorly. After a rather public reminder of his grief spiral—I don’t know a car accident or something—the Wayne Enterprises board of directors gets nervous and saddles Bruce with a bodyguard.

Bruce does not like this any more than he does when they pull this move on him in canon post-NML. However, he is also depressed and puts up less of a fight.

Sasha Bordeaux finds herself saddled with keeping alive a very slippery, very depressed man who will disappear on her and return with injuries he doesn’t hide particularly well or bother to explain.

Sasha is a professional. She uncovers Bruce’s secret identity fairly quickly (Bruce is very much not doing well and his secret keeping skills are at an all time low probably) and proceeds to force herself onto his team.

She was hired to keep Bruce alive and if that means she also has to keep Batman alive, then so be it.

After about a week of her following Batman around and involving herself in his business, Bruce relents and begins training Sasha in an attempt to scare her off. It doesn’t work.

Sasha Bordeaux does not become Robin. She is initially a nameless vigilante fighting at Batman’s side. Eventually, she picks up the moniker of Shadow for the way she follows him around.

She also does not have that same bone-deep commitment to the code that Batman and his other allies do. You know the jokes about how Tim only doesn’t kill because Batman says so? That’s more accurate for Sasha here.

That is not to say she’d kill people like crazy if it weren’t for Batman, but she is an adult professional and in a field where sometimes lethal force is necessary. If the decision comes down between her client’s life and the life of their attacker, she will protect her client. She respects and understands Bruce’s reason for his code, and as long as she is acting as a vigilante, she will abide by it, but her refusal to completely believe in it is a source of tension between her and Bruce.

Her attitude towards vigilantism is also different. She is learning from Batman and she fights alongside him, but she is not his sidekick. She is his employee. Her first and foremost priority is him. As time goes on, she does come to value and become more invested in the other parts of vigilantism, but her first priority always remains Bruce.

Having Sasha around does help pull Bruce out of his rut because he now has to think about having another person around him. Sasha’s lack of complete buy-in with his code also forces him to be more aware of it in his own actions.

Tim’s superpower is networking. Sasha’s is not. As a result of this, Bruce remains more isolated in his crime fighting. Without Tim there to drag Dick back, their relationship is much more distant and strained. While they eventually reconcile from the aftermath of Jason’s death, I don’t think they get to the point where Bruce formally adopts him. Likewise, he’ll work with Oracle, but they’re both far more likely to just do their own thing.

Without Tim, Helena doesn’t really make it to the point of ‘in and out’ of Batman’s circle. She stays solidly on the outside. She remains on the Justice League reserves, but she doesn’t have her JLA membership in this AU. Eventually though, she still does join up with the Birds of Prey.

Similarly, Stephanie doesn’t really have any of the teaming up with Tim that she does. All she’s got is her own gumption and Batman telling her to stop.

Let’s take a moment to talk about Knightfall. Jean-Paul Valley happens. Bruce tells Sasha to get him trained up and she does. Bruce still makes him Batman.

When he goes off to rescue Dr Kinsolving though, she refuses to stay behind and keep an eye on Jean-Paul and instead accompanies him. She’s his bodyguard after all, not Jean-Paul Valley’s.

This results in things going downhill even quicker for poor JPV.

To me, this results in Helena having a precursor to her No Man’s Land arc where she realizes that someone needs to step up, but I feel like it’s more likely that she just thinks that Batman’s rally gone off the rails, steers clear of him, and judges him for being so high and mighty for her crossing the line when he’s like this now.

Anyway, Bruce gets magicured and comes back to Gotham. He does call in Dick for help (Dick is still annoyed about the Azbats thing but he comes when called). Prodigal doesn’t happen.

Sasha eventually joins Bruce’s cast of love interests. Since they’re on the same side, there isn’t the inherent drama of Selina or Talia, but I’m sure Bruce can find a way to make it tragic.

Hmm, I’m not interested in retelling canon except Tim’s not there so we’re going to skip ahead some.

Sasha follows Bruce on his No Man’s Land guilt-bender which probably has more guilt since she’s standing there all the time judging him. She also breaks up with him. Because he’s in his guilt-bender era.

We’ve got to build isolation mode Bruce, so let’s say, somewhere during the climax of No Man’s Land, Sasha needs to kill someone, which sparks conflict—

No wait, better idea. Bruce and Dick are at a disagreement over Dick’s decision to join the police force. Officer Down drives them further apart and also results in Alfred deciding to pack up and move in with Dick instead. Barbara is also mad at Bruce because of Officer Down.

When Hugo Strange does attack Wayne Enterprises, Sasha is put in the position where the only option she can see is to shoot to kill.

This leads to a huge argument between her and Bruce where they probably have one of those “you’re fired” “well, I quit” exchanges and she storms out.

They are still, of course, tragically in love though. (I am not the hugest fan of Sasha/Bruce but it has grown on me.)

What happens to Sasha after this? Hmm, let’s say Barbara recruits her for the Birds of Prey because she knows all their secrets and is still a part of this now..

This one of the few times that Sasha is ever a team player. She mainly sticks with Bruce. The only exception is the Outsiders when it’s Bruce’s team. She probably takes over them instead of Alfred (I still think that was the silly sort of comics stupid) which Bruce is in his ‘dead’ era.

But now, it’s time to talk about Tim. For that, we go all the way back to the beginning: Haly’s Circus, the night the Graysons fell.

Tim needs to be an adult in this AU for plot reasons, so we’ll say he was the same age as Dick. Acrobatics was just the latest in a long string of interests his parents had encouraged, so when he met Dick, that was one of the coolest things ever.

And then the Graysons fall to their deaths.

This leaves Tim with recurring nightmares and a new obsession with death and the Batman, something that his parents are uncomfortable with.

One night when Tim’s in high school, while he’s out late with his friends, in places they shouldn’t be, they get into more trouble than they can handle and Robin saves them.

Robin uses a quadruple somersault.

Tim keeps the knowledge close and never talks about it.

Towards the end of his freshman year of college, his parents are killed in a car accident while abroad. He ends up taking his inheritance, dropping out of school and doing his own mini Batman training tour, going here and there, doing odd jobs, learning from whoever will teach him, and doing a class here or there.

He does manage to scrape enough credits and motivation together to get a degree, right around the time No Man’s Land is ending. He’s still pretty aimless, so when he hears that the board is hiring a personal assistant for Bruce Wayne, he applies.

Bruce is in self-isolation mode and absolutely does not want yet another person foisted upon him by the board. Unfortunately, Tim is just as tenacious as Sasha was, he kind of reminds Bruce of Dick (who he misses because he’s sabotaged that relationship so hard), and so, when Tim inadvertently lets on that he knows Bruce’s secret, he starts teaching Tim vigilantism as well. Because he’s also pretty lonely.

Tim is enthusiastic about all of this and is also trying to encourage Bruce to reconnect to people with mixed results. I think he does succeed at getting Bruce and Dick to talk for once in their lives, but most of the time Bruce is not particularly inclined to listen to him and also he had some pretty bad arguments with people.

So Bruce is still on his own when he is framed for murder. Tim, as his live-in personal assistant, is also there and arrested.

Blah blah blah Bruce Wayne: Murderer/Fugitive happens. Dick, who has recently reconnected with Bruce a little more, is like ‘that’s my emotionally distant father figure who I refuse to believe could commit murder’. Sasha also does not believe it due to their previous conflicts and ends up coming back to help the investigation.

They clear his name, but before they can get Tim out, he gets his death faked in prison and recruited by Checkmate.

Bruce still gets very upset by this because, while Tim was kind of annoying, he also reminded him of Dick and the fact that he is dead is hitting some really sore spots for him so he terrorizes Checkmate until they cough Tim up to tell him that he wants to stay.

Tim has been looking for purpose and Checkmate gives him that. It was cool, fighting with Batman, but he was also very much aware that he was coming from outside and Bruce has people supporting him now, so he doesn’t need Tim.

We’re going to skip ahead again to CheckOut because THIS is the big Dick & Tim teamup in this AU.

Tim has done all the OMAC project stuff, he tried to organize a coup against Maxwell Lord to mixed results, he got OMAC-ifified, and he got promoted to Black King afterward despite his youth because he has an A-tier networking game.

And now Checkmate wants to take on Oolong Island, but they can’t because politics, so Tim suggests they Shanghai the Outsiders for a number of practical reasons, but mainly because he is still a major Nightwing fan.

He’s over here like ‘we’ll kidnap everyone except Nightwing because clearly Nightwing is too amazing and awesome for us to kidnap so instead we’ll lure him to us.’

And they like fight and Nightwing recognizes him as that guy who was working with Batman before because of his fighting style and they banter their way across this teamup. I  don’t think Tim ever tells him about watching his parents die because Tim does in fact have tact in that regard, but he has a great time getting to team up with Nightwing. Except for all the torture of course.

But back to Sasha, when Bruce dies, Nightwing takes over as Batman and makes Damian the first new Robin since Jason.

I know I said Sasha probably ended up in charge of the Outsiders, but also I think she should do the Bruce-quest as being one of the most attached to Bruce.

Sasha and Alfred team up maybe?

He didn’t stay mortal for long, as Carmilla found him like in cannon and mechanized both of his hearts. They stole a TARDIS called Aurora and fled to the stars. Many many years later, The Archivist finds his long lost brother when taking his companions, Martin, Tim, and Sasha to the Steamworld Intergalactic Music Festival

False domestic psychological prison

An enterprising young member of an intergalactic authority comes up with a new idea for these immortal criminals’ containment: the only prison the Mechanisms can’t escape is the one they don’t know they’re in. They capture the mechanisms and through a combination of the sedative effects of the Lotus, and some memory altering microchips, they get the Mechanisms to think they are just (mostly) normal people on a normal planet. To make them less likely to escape, they gave them something they never could have had before. Jonny gets respect as the owner of a tailor shop, with workers who call him sir, and trust and obey his judgement. Brian, as a priest is listened to in all his advice and praised for his wise moral decisions. Will they realize it’s a trick? Or stay living this lie forever?

Spaceteam fic

The Aurora gets stuck in a strange wormhole (bifrost?) and she can’t operate anything but basic piloting. Suddenly strange new controls are on the bridge, as well as whole other consoles of controls. Instructions for what to do are provided on screens, but they don’t match the control each mechanism sees on their console. Luckily they’re all within shouting distance, but they will have to learn to work together… as a spaceteam. Set Sigmaclapper to 5! Soak Ferrous Holospectrum! Baste the Emergency Whittler!

Summer Camp Councilors

Human au where the mechanisms are councilors at Camp Cosmo, with wacky hijinks, camp names, and songs. Several units of cabins inspired by the 4 story albums, a great spot on a canal with sea kayaking, regular kayaking, sailing, and canoeing. A high ropes and low ropes course, an archery range, and an arts and crafts area are also present for those who aren’t water crazy. Pack up your sense of adventure and extra flashlight batteries! Hopefully the campers won’t get into any drama…

The owner, Carmilla herself is illusive at best, and her seeming to only show her face at night has lead to rumors of her being a vampire or witch. Rumors that are only worsened when she gave each of her employees a strange new gift: pins, that she insists are a new part of their uniform to be worn at all times. The purpose of the pins is made clear when Jonny is shot by a rival rumrunner while on a job and comes back from the dead.

Martin recognised John on sight, how couldn’t he? Before Elias had decided to sink his claws into the Archivist John belonged to the Mother of Spiders. That’s who he was supposed to be under the control of. Whenever Martin saw John he felt sorry for him, he’d only been working there a few weeks but he could see how out of his depth John felt, how lost he was. It was obvious to anyone that he had been picked by Elias to be easy for him to control, especially after Gertrude. Martin had decided it was going to be his duty to try and take John back. He had no idea if it was possible but he had to try. He wanted him, he wanted his thin frame under his hands and to pull on the web he would attach to John’s limbs. He wanted to know everything about him, to control his life to suit Martin… He was supposed to be an Avatar of the Spider, the least he could do was become an Agent since he betrayed them by allying himself with the Eye (even if it was unknowingly.) These thoughts kept running through Martin’s head during his workday, which had resulted in him making several mistakes, and as such be scolded by John for them. Martin didn’t mind, he was used to this sort of treatment and it helped with his cover. Not even Elias suspected him.

It soon became apart of Martin’s act to seem incompetent - he would accidentally misfile something, forget to put the correct number on certain folders, little things like that. He’d stammer an apology and even John found it difficult to stay too mad at him, although he hid that fact very well. He wasn’t always bad at his job, he was good at getting people to talk to him - statement givers always said far more to Martin than they did to anyone else. He supposed he was good at twisting words and at finding out exactly what he wanted to hear. He may not have been the best at legwork but he often made connections no one else did, his pattern recognition was rather incredible. Occasionally his talent shined through and surprised his colleagues… so he made sure to make enough mistakes to cover it up, or portray it as a happy accident. He was careful to not make so many issues his co-workers despised him, if anything Tim and Sasha seemed rather protective over him like he was a little brother. They’d defend his mistakes, help fix them, and not notice the stammering quiet softness was an act. Although, sometimes Martin would forget that it was.

Martin wasn’t sure when he fell for John, and it almost certainly was not apart of the plan. He supposed he found him attractive on sight, although discovering John was terrified of spiders was a slight turn off. Every time John flinched or tried to crush one of his children Martin felt a flash of anger through his mind. Fortunately he knew enough sad looks and lectures was enough for John to grudgingly leave the spiders alone. At least whilst Martin was nearby. John’s habit of crushing them in secret made it a bit more difficult to keep an eye on his Archivist but not impossible, especially not with how attached John was becoming to his tape recorders. Martin made sure John always had one in his pocket, just nearby enough to record anything strange. Martin listened to them with joy and excitement, as if John was speaking just for him. Martin didn’t like how paranoid and upset John was becoming however, it played on his mind more than it should have. Eventually he worked out what John really needed to calm down was to start smoking again, it sounded insane given how week human lungs are but… Martin decided it would hardly matter. If John became his agent, or fully the Archivist, then death by lung cancer was unlikely. It was fairly simple, actually. All Martin had to do was send him a bespoke lighter covered in a web design. John didn’t even question it, just accepted it and carried it along with him everywhere. Since he did that, Martin could always see him. He could keep his eye on John all the time, it ensured his tape recorders constantly appeared, and he was able to keep the Archivist safe.

Jane Prentiss’s attack had been unprecedented, of course it made some sense, Martin’s spiders had been killing and eating her worms after all. There wasn’t much Martin could do about it but Prentiss wasn’t accepting the ‘Circle of Life’ explanation. He had been a bit affronted that no one at the Archive had come to save him, until he discovered that John had received a text from him saying he was ill. He did intend to deal with Prentiss himself but for some reason when John jumped to his defence he felt … he couldn’t say no. He quite liked being protected and living in the Archive was a bonus. It meant he was free to roam the building and tunnels as much as he please. He could leave his tape recorders everywhere! It was too good to pass up. It would seem a relationship with John might be a useful goal to achieve after all.

The Archives have been left in a state of disarray the previous Archivist, the late alleged pothead and slacker Elias Bouchard. The Archivist has been given three assistants to help in this task: competent and organized Sasha James, driven to the Institute years ago by the disappearance of her sister, Tim Stoker, who is of course the same as he has always been, and has never changed, and grumpy Jonathan Sims, whose resentment of the often incompetent Archivist is understandable but excessive. John had only been back at work after the catastrophe with Jane Prentiss for two weeks when the next odd events started happening. Although, he supposed if he thought about it had been longer than that. He hadn’t been one for any anxiety regarding heights before this, he quite liked them in fact. He enjoyed feeling the fresh air hit his face and the views it afforded. However, lately whenever he found himself looking down - such as from his flat building, from the windows on his bank which happened to be on the sixth floor, or even from the upper deck of a bus - he felt this bolt of fear cause his joints to freeze in place. Alongside it nausea would twist in his stomach, and he felt himself rock back and forth. He’d only felt vertigo like this during extreme anxiety and stress, when he was at university or during his more troublesome childhood years, it was odd to suddenly experience it during something he didn’t even find objectively scary. The other thing that happened is that he swore he was being watched from above, not the general paranoia that came with working in the archive, not the feeling of eyes in the wall, but the feeling that someone was sat high up physically watching. It all came to a head when he entered his locked office on a Thursday morning and he felt a strange, vast emptiness alongside a smell of carbon fill his office. He tried to ignore it, he put down his files and tape recorder on his desk, and then just as he sat down and tried to get comfortable in his empty office that had not been used since he was there the day before… Someone spoke.

“Hey there, Archivist,” Mike said, voice cool and distant as he burned patterns into the top of the bookcase with his fingers. There was a hum behind it, like the reverb from a storm cloud. John recognised him, Sasha had made a statement about the young man, and Martin had been chatting about how he had encountered the same person when he brought John a cup of tea. After that, Tim had casually mentioned he used to work there, John tried not to think about how Sasha should have known that. Before John could compose himself enough to reply, Mike spoke again. “So, how much do you remember? From when you were the cantankerous old bitch, of course. If you’ll excuse my language.”

“Excuse me, but what are you doing in my office?” John said, filling his voice and shoulders with strength and arrogance he didn’t have. He tried to cover that he had no idea what Mike was talking about, nor did he have any idea how to answer such a bizarre, non-sensical question.

“Your office?” Mike snorted. “No no no. This isn’t your anything, Archivist. You’re not an anyone or anything. You’re just a little pet. A small fracture of something bigger.”

“Your Michael-”

“It’s Mike, actually.”

“Fine,” John sniffed, he rolled his eyes and exhaled before continuing. “Mike Crew, the one from the statements. The one who has been hounding Sasha and Martin.”

“I haven’t been hounding anyone, I’m a delight,” Mike mocked as a smug grin spread across his face. “Besides. Sasha likes me. So does Martin. Sounds like you’re jealous they’re my friends not yours.”

“I find it hard to believe a beast like you has friends-” John interrupted himself with a surprised yell when Mike pushed himself off of the bookshelf and landed eerily smoothly onto of John’s desk. Mike sat cross legged, and John gulped as he could smell the burning, the carbon, the air after a storm, after a lightening attack. John could feel the static and sparks from Mike’s scar, he pushed his chair away nervously.

“You’re very rude,” Mike said finally, voice as quiet as rainfall. “Not quite as rude as your predecessor, but Archivist, you’re both the same to me. Have you ever been stuck in a storm, Archivist?”

“You don’t scare me.” John may have been more convincing of his voice didn’t shake as he spoke. “Your- you are nothing.” There was a thunderous clap ringing through out the room as John suddenly yelled out in shock and agony as he felt his bones contort and his organs explode, his body twisting and crushing as cold knives pierced his skin. The icy sensation kept rushing through him and he expected a slam against the ground, a final relief, but instead he awoke exactly where he had been. He was on his chair, in his office, not remotely harmed.

“That was six stories. Pretty nasty, huh?” Mike’s voice was a quiet taunt, vibrating against John’s skin, gently poking at the wounds.

“But not real,” John said finally, his voice strained and heavy with determination mixed with fear. “Nothing you can do to me is-” he stopped and gasped, yelling with fear and agony as Mike grabbed his hand. He smelt his own burning flesh and tears coated his cheek. When Mike let go, there was a large, fresh burn on the back of his hand. It blistered and sizzled as John shook and whimpered.

“Well, that’s good. Because I guess that means that burn on the back of your hand isn’t really either, huh?” Mike giggled and as a loud gust of wind filled the office he disappeared, causing John to be sat there alone, his chest heaving as his joints froze in place still horrified by what had just transpired.
