English Sparkling Wine producer “Nyetimber” estate 訪問

2022年10月６日、英国スパークリングワイン生産者 "ナイティンバー”で開催された 収穫祭に参加しました。ロンドンから南へ車で3時間ほどのウェストサセックス州にあるナイティンバーは、シャンパーニュと同じブドウ品種であるシャルドネ、ピノ・ノワール及びピノ・ムニエを使用して、瓶内二次発酵製法のスパークリングワインを英国で初めて製造したことから、英国スパークリングワインのパイオニアとして知られ、現在も業界を牽引する存在です。

ナイティンバーへの訪問は2回目ですが、今回は2022年の収穫を祝って世界中からディストリビューターやお取扱店が集まるイベントへの参加で、日本からのお客様もいらっしゃるので、どんなスペシャルな催しなるのか期待が膨らみます。ロンドンからバスでエステイトに到着すると、他国からの参加者はもう既に到着済。イギリスらしからぬ素晴らしい快晴に恵まれて、庭園を見下ろすテイスティングルームでお茶をいただいてから、ブランドアンバサダーの案内でトラクターに引かれた車両に乗り込みブドウ畑へ。

その前週に収穫が終了したばかりのシャルドネとピノ・ノワールの畑を眺めながら、畑が穏やかな南向き斜面であり、土壌がブドウ栽培に適した石灰質とグリーンサンド質、低地にあるので風の被害を受けにくい等の説明をうけたところで、ピノ・ノワールの収穫体験！15分ほどの体験で収穫した健康なブドウは収穫バスケットへ。醸造されてワインになるのかな？　

次に案内されたのは、2017年に新築されたブドウのプレスセンター。そこには、写真で何度も拝見していた醸造家ブラッド・グレイトリックス氏！彼の説明によると、404人の作業員が手摘みで収穫したブドウが15kg入る小さい容器に入れられて、全房のままプレス機に載せられ、その小さい容器単位で優しくプレスされるそうです。ワインのあの繊細な味わいはこうした丁寧な作業によるのだなと納得しました。

そこからは歩いて、ブドウ畑の真ん中に設置された大きなテント内レセプション会場で、弦楽器トリオの生演奏を聴きながら、スパークリングワイン“Classic Cuvee”とカナッペでアペリティフタイム。

ワインを2杯飲み干した頃、会場を移し、エステイト内の“Medieval Barn(中世の納屋)”へ。ここはなんと15世紀に建てられた納屋で、その後時代と共に改築されてきましたが、2019年に現オーナーが大改築を行い、現代的設備をもちながら中世の雰囲気そのままの内装に仕上げた素敵な空間です。自分のネームプレートを探して席に着き、ブランドアンバサダーの挨拶後、会食が始まりました。

前菜“スコットランドサーモンのタルタル＆オイスターソース”には“Blanc de Blancs 2014”、主菜”滋養鶏のコンフィ“には単一畑ブドウで造られた”Tillington Single Vineyard 2014”。 そしてデザート“地元リンゴのタルト”にはちょっとスイートなワイン“Cuvee Cherie”をお供に。

こんな特別な体験をさせてくれたナイティンバーと日本輸入総代理店TYクリエイションさんに大変感謝をすると共に、日本でのナイティンバーブランドの発展に貢献せねばと気を引き締めた日でもありました。
