To Know About Women! “Eve Arnold hated how women looked like objects so she took the camera out of the studio and went to the fashion shows, backstage where the action was happening. Suddenly, the women were living, breathing people who laughed and got tired and had ambitions. It was a revelation! ” - @maya_binkin, exhibition curator. 🎟️ Book your tickets at Newlands House Gallery’s website (link in bio). ★★★★ A fantastic review by the @guardian of ‘Eve Arnold - To Know About Women’ “Set across three rambling floors of a Georgian townhouse in the self-consciously picturesque Sussex town of Petworth, it uses the space well to tell the episodic story of a pioneering photographer. The first woman to be admitted to the Magnum photographic agency.” writes Claire Armitstead 🎟️ ‘Eve Arnold - To Know About Women’ curated by @maya_binkin is now open at Newlands House Gallery in Petworth. To celebrate the reopening of the @NationalPortraitGallery we'll be sharing our favourite portraits by our current exhibition artist: Eve Arnold. “Eve Arnold studied at the New School for Social Research under Alexei Brodovitch. It was during this period that she decided to photograph African American fashion shows taking place in a former Abyssinian Church in Harlem, New York. In a still segregated city, this was a world that the mainstream media of the time had not explored. This portrait of Charlotte Stribling (referred to Fabulous) was Eve’s first published work, marking a watershed in her career, and in the way that photographers documented the world of fashion. The picture, made at the start of the civil rights movement, also captures a turning point in American history. Eve would document black lives over the next three decades.” Michael Arnold, Estate of Eve Arnold See this and more photos featuring Charlotte Stribling and the Harlem fashion shows at Newlands House Gallery's exhibition: 'Eve Arnold - To Know About Women'. Open Wednesday to Sunday Book your tickets on our website (link in bio) Help the @NationalPortraitGallery create a virtual online gallery, and celebrate their reopening, by sharing your favourite portrait or selfie using the #PortraitMode hashtag. "Whenever I visited Annie’s studio I was struck by the energy when you walk through the door and wanted to bring somehow an element of that space into Newlands House Gallery, which is what we did here. The little sculpture is the first sculpture that Annie did with breeze-blocks and it just remained like a sphynx by the door of the studio. Like a little mascot, so it seemed right to bring him over too." - Maya Binkin (@theartpilgrim) Exhibition Curator. 🎟 Book your tickets for "Two Worlds Entwined: Annie Morris and Idris Khan" on our website (link in bio).
