WHATS UR GHOST DR LIKE?
AAAAAAAAAA FIRST OF ALL, I LOVE YOU THANK YOU FOR ASKING !!!! I MADE A TIKTOK EXPLAINING THE BASICS HERE, BUT THIS IS AN EXCUSE TO RAMBLE ABOUT MY HYPERFIXATION SO I'LL PUT IT BELOW THE CUT
Ok so basically, it's is a combination of a bookstore owner DR and a DR where the lore of the band Ghost is real! So, the band itself has its own lore, like I mentioned, and its whole deal is that it is part of a (fictional!) Satanic church. (It's theistic Satanism, unlike the Satanic Temple in this reality, which doesn't actually worship Satan.) The lead singer of the band is the head of this church and has the rank of Papa (it's Italian for "Pope"), while the instrumentalists/backup singers are called Nameless Ghouls, or just Ghouls. The ghouls are demons summoned from Hell to serve the church. Fans have named the ghouls because Papa only ever introduces them as "Ghoul" onstage gjkfhbkjf
ANYWAY. The current Papa in this reality is Papa Emeritus IV, originally introduced as Cardinal Copia! (He got promoted hdfgjdhkf) Copia's my s/o! He's the love of my life, the other half of my soul, my everything. Copia, despite being a Cardinal in the Church of Satan, is an awkward doofus with anxiety and I absolutely adore him. He's just so hdjghdfkghfd <3333333 This is him:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Papa Emeritus I, II, and III are his brothers, but they don't know they're related yet. Papa Nihil is their dad, and all four of them are half brothers bc Nihil wasn't one for being faithful :')))) I can get more into the rest of the Satanic Panic's family tree later if you want me to, but to save time here, I'll hold off for now 🥰
Moving on, when I first shift to my DR, it will be when Copia is still a Cardinal and Papa Emeritus III (aka Terzo, the bisexual disaster himself) is still Papa. I have recently inherited a witchy bookshop ("The Witch's Inkwell") near the church's HQ, called the Ministry. Copia, being the world's biggest nerd, is going to swing by because he knew the previous owner, my uncle, and wanted to go shopping for new books. Instead, he sees me! That's how we meet, and thus begins a slow burn romance full of mutual pining and idiots in love. Copia's ghouls (the ones that he personally summoned from Hell) and Terzo are also probably going to try and parent trap us, so sjghkdfhg OH! Here's what some of Copia's ghouls look like for context asjdshjfkdhf
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ghouls themselves are feral little beasties but we love em <3
...Wow I really went into all this without really talking about myself huh 💀💀💀 Okie dokie then 😭😭😭 My name is Aoibhe (pronounced "EE-vuh," it's Irish fkjjdhgk) and I grew up in Bristol, only to move to Grimsbury when I inherited the shop! In my DR, Ireland was never conquered or colonized, and it has a royal family as famous as the British one. My family is actually distantly related to the Irish crown, too! I actually wrote a lot about the Irish royal family and how they fought off invaders, but the sparknotes version is that the people who would unite the island and lead the fight against those who would conquer it had a form of pyrokinesis! Over time, this ability became rarer and rarer until it vanished entirely, fading into legend. That is, of course, until my brother and I were born ;) So yeah I have fire powers fhjkghfdhf (I know it's cringe but I'm having fun, so let me live 😂😂😂)
So yeah! That's the basics dgjdhfkghd If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!!! I love talking about this DR!!! <3333

Hi Pia! I am missing you getting all wordy~ about some of your characters this month. So in rare chance that you would actually want to do it yourself but didn't get an ask to do it, here it is! lol For example - Januzs is good at baking, would he bake crusty bread rolls for Nate in your best tradition? Ef likes books - would he fall in love with the library if/when Gary bring him there? What's your fav fae elements analogies to write (mine is your water).
Hi anon,
This response might be frustrating, but the truth is, I don't know! I don't know until it's in the story. How I answer these things in anon is a bit different to how it actually is for the character in the story.
Like, maybe Efnisien will like a library, or maybe he won't. Based on Falling Falling Stars Efnisien, he probably won't as much as he likes bookstores. (Which I think would just be down to a confluence of factors including his social anxiety, and bookstores allow him to only deal with a social space once, vs. twice). But who knows! I do know that the area where he is currently with Gary has no library anywhere nearby. They'd be driving hours and hours to get to one.
But there is a cool little secondhand bookshop.
As for Janusz, who knows. I want to do more research into his heritage first, and I also want to know how he's learning to bake new things. I.e. if he's on baking groups and where they are (Facebook, Tiktok, a forum, a forum of Polish immigrants etc.) might influence what he's most interested in baking at the time. It's not a matter of simply coming up with something! These questions often require research or thinking about their character more deeply. :D
And my favourite fae element to write is probably water as well, though I also enjoyed fire with Eran so much. Water is naturally very emotive and expressive, so it lent itself to the metaphors extremely well!

Did you hear about the person in Utah who got the Bible banned in school for sexual and gross content? What are your thoughts on this?
Yes, I posted about it previously. It's funny because atheists have been saying for years that the bible is inappropriate for children.
Xians worry about the magical themes in fictional fantasy like Harry Potter, while their own completely "true" moral guide to life and the universe has demons, witches, magic spells, god making bets with the devil, talking animals, genocide, sex-slaves, dragons, incest, violence, and two bears murdering 42 children.
That said, I don't support banning it. Or any books.
However, there's a difference between "banning" a book and schools not including a book in their libraries. Schools are public in the sense that they're operated for the people, but not in the sense that anyone can just waltz in and expect access and services. They're protected spaces for children. So it's not unreasonable to classify books and other materials according to age-appropriateness. Just like we already do for films and TV shows. (Of course, private schools, such as Catholic schools, operate to their own criteria.)
If a book is deemed suitable for say, only 15 and older, then it doesn't need to be in elementary/primary schools. Especially when it talks about "vagina slime" and masturbating with a sock. Or casually endorses medicalized child sterility with "that's cool." That's not "banning" it, it's saving it for when it's actually appropriate. Although, when a book like that is ever appropriate, I have no idea.
It's also true that schools, especially elementary/primary and secondary often do not have the space or resources to carry every damn book. It's not unreasonable for any books being introduced to be justified in terms of budget and educational value. If the school doesn't carry it, go get it from a bookstore or public community library instead.
None of these could or should be considered "banning," if whatever criteria or rules are made transparent and applied consistently.
It should also be mentioned that elementary/primary and secondary school teachers do not enjoy "academic freedom," nor freedom of expression or speech in their capacity as teachers. They're government employees, and don't have the right to teach whatever they want however they want any more than Kim Davis had the freedom of religion to deny same-sex couples marriage licenses according to her personal beliefs. Teachers, like Davis, are agents of the government, and they are to do what they are told. As public servants, they're answerable to the parents and taxpayers, not some higher being or agenda.
Teachers who teach their own religious, political or ideological beliefs either as curriculum, or embedded into it, or exhibit a compulsion to make their faith, beliefs, personality, identity or politics central to the classroom are unfit and should be removed. They're an authoritarian narcissist getting their rocks off to a vulnerable captive audience. Which in many cases seems to be the point.
"Not until gentle Jesus, meek and mild, are you told if you don’t make the right propitiations you can depart into everlasting fire. One of the most wicked ideas ever preached and one that has ruined the lives and peace of mind of many, many children…preached to them by vicious, child-hating old men and women in the name of this ghasty cult."
-- Christopher Hitchens
The nun gleefully beating children with her strap, and the TikTok teacher boasting of confusing children with her imaginary pronouns are both enemies of children and education.
If they want academic freedom, they can go to the tertiary sector. But there they'll run into people who can and will argue back, which seems to explain certain categories of teacher.
For the same reason, the expectation that every preferred book must be accommodated in a school library and made available to children is completely unreasonable. Schools are spaces which must cater to the kids, not to the sensibilities, superstitions and egos of the teachers.

Hello Mari, how are you? I hope you are doing wonderfully well(;
Anyway, let me ask you a few questions! First of all, out of all the fanfics you've written so far, is there one that you consider your favorite? Are there fanfics that are more difficult to write and others that are relatively easier? Or are they all the same difficulty level? Ever thought about writing a physical book? (In my opinion, you have a lot of potential! I would definitely be one of the first in line at the bookstore, lol!).
And finally, how does your creativity work? Do you think about your stories very often? Or are there specific times for your creativity to kick in?
(OBS: Sorry for the list of questions! Don't feel pressured to answer, and forgive me if my English is bad! I'm still learning🙃).
A big hug for you dear, take care(:
Hello!! I am doing okay! Just normal life stress seeing as my car is now taking a turn for the less good and I might need to start looking around for another one😭
Out of all of my fics, I think baby might be my favorite one. I live the vibe of it and the way that it is going. I have so many ideas for it including different idol interactions and btsxmc interactions. I feel like the love in the bond is so pure that sometimes instincts overwrite normal thoughts or expectations.
I think there are definitely some fics that are more difficult to write than others. The most difficult one for me (because of the headspace I was in) is definitely a hand to hold. I truly think i might discontinue it. Petrichor is also a hard one to write for mainly because I have so much written for it in terms of world building. Im also trying not to take away from the mcs personality and her tenacity as she becomes an omega. I don’t want her to be a stereotypical omega in that right. I want her to have the same fire in her as when the met the boys and that’s kind of harder to maintain than I thought. Also, I find I like steering away from smut, and there is definitely going to be smut or at least mating between namjoon and mc within petrichor. I’ve been building up to it for 17 chs now and I don’t want to take away that build up from you guys.
Baby and tlblw are definitely some of the easier fics for me to write because I am more or less writing about my own experiences with my disabilities and just making them more or less something easier to understand and read about when it comes to an mc. Plus, people relate a lot to those mcs which helps a lot. They are more like self inserts than reader fics but I still write them as a reader fic.
I have actually thought about writing novels before. Last year I started world building for one, but quickly lost interest in it ngl. I think I could like rework some of my fics and publish them but mainly enchanted, dot, and petrichor. I have so many TikTok’s saved about publishing and self publishing. I wanted to be an editor/writer in a publishing house in high school but unfortunately listened to family and pursued teaching instead.
As for my creativity, I think about ideas and world building all the time. Even at work I’m constantly in my head, coming up with different stories or working on ones I’ve already thought up. I do have specific times though, where I absolutely need to write something down and my mind won’t let me do anything else until I do. I am very thankful for my notes app when this happens😂
pls don’t apologize and thank you for the big hug🥰🥰❤️❤️🥹🥹🥹

So like, I’ve seen so many discussions on booktok when it comes to like… “spicy”(smutty) books and how booktok has a corn addiction and I find both arguments to be kind of stupid and lacking nuance. Like an addiction is also based on how it affects your quality of life and how you function and someone who prefers to read smut doesn’t necessarily mean their addicted to it. Idk a lot of the argument comes off puritanical. But like I still get the annoyance cus a lot of time pp precious things on booktok that contain 🍇 and dv that are advertised as romance. Idk, just wanted to know your thoughts.
Hmm, I do find some of the ideas of the younger folks a little puritanical. I think because I grew up in a time where the censors were so heavy, I remember there were HEATED debates over allowing "bitch" to be said in specific shows of a specific rating. I remember when you couldn't get more than a passionate kiss on screen and writers had to be really creative with sex scenes, and now we're at the other end of the pendulum swing where it's like, teen shows aren't even teen shows anymore because there's these graphic sex scenes not really appropriate for the target audience, so I can imagine that growing up in that would make you a little more prudish potentially.
That being said, I'm not sure if, when talking about "addiction" if they're being facetious or not. It's entirely possible they don't *seriously* mean addiction. I can't know that for sure because I don't know which tiktoks you're talking about specifically, but, in the event they aren't being sarcastic, it's weird to make those kinds of calls about someone else's interests. I worked in a bookstore for five years and one of the funniest parts of my day would be the reading group of 70+ year old women who came in with STACKS of harlequin novels, and they were SERIOUS about them. When the fire alarm went off, the refused to evacuate because we hadn't checked their books out yet. I think people can feel strongly about the things they like, like smutty books like harlequin, and it's not an addiction. I think if folks wanna read those kinds of books, there's nothing wrong with that, and no one is breaking down other people's doors and forcing them to read smut so anyone who doesn't want to should really just mind their business and keep it pushing, without all the judgment. Just my two cents.

New Release from Sawyer Bennett
Callum (Pittsburgh Titans, Book #12)
Tumblr media
Synopsis:
Callum Derringer was hired by the Pittsburgh Titans to help rebuild the organization after a devastating plane crash left its future unknown. Now that he’s got the team back on track, it’s time to put some effort into his own life.
When I accepted the job of general manager with the Titans, it was just the opportunity I needed to prove myself to the sports world. Unfortunately, my career isn’t the only area in which I’ve previously made mistakes and the past is about to come back in a big way.
Juniper Ryan is…complicated. Smart, funny and insanely gorgeous, she was my first love and my first heartbreak. But my loss was my stepbrother’s gain and she’s been his wife for five years now. I’ve done a decent job of putting her out of my mind but when I’m brought home for a family emergency and see the bruises on Juniper, I’m gutted to learn that she was pushed into the arms of a monster.
Vowing to put our past aside, I learn dark truths about my brother and his marriage to my first love. And to make matters worse, I’m beginning to realize the feelings I once had for Juniper aren’t tucked quite as far away as I had hoped.
When things take a dangerous turn, I’m willing to put myself in the line of fire to keep my girl safe. I was a fool to walk away from Juniper the first time and I’m a man who knows better than to make the same mistake twice.

My GR Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5591031475
Synopsis:
Hendrix Bateman is one of The Lucky Three, a trio of players who were not on the Titan’s team plane the night it crashed. Feeling as if he’s been given a second chance, Hendrix is determined to make the most out of his life, but that doesn’t mean he’s not suffering from scars that can’t be seen.
When I lost my Titan brothers in the crash, it was a mixed bag of emotions. I was devastated and grief stricken, but I was also grateful to be alive. Yeah, that might cause a little—okay, a lot of—guilt, but now I’m determined to live each day as if it’s my last.
A night out with friends puts me in the crosshairs of Stevie Kisner—the devastatingly beautiful bar owner with a sharp tongue and a fire in her eyes that lets me know she has zero tolerance for guys like me. I’ve never been one to back away from a challenge, so I’m not dissuaded by Stevie’s tough as nails attitude or her big biker dad who looks like he wants to kill me. Fueled by too many shots and the raucous urging of my teammates, I set out to show Stevie I’ve got game both on and off the ice.
While I shouldn’t be looking for anything more than a good time, I can’t help but be captivated by Stevie. She’s cool as hell and we burn hot together. But the more I get to know her, the more I can tell she’s holding something in reserve, and let’s just say I’ve got some trust issues after my last disastrous attempt at a relationship. Now I need to decide if I’m going to let my past dictate my future or if I am willing to put my heart on the line to find out if Stevie is exactly what I think she is—my everything.

Blog Tour: Top 5 Reasons to Read WE’LL NEVER TELL by Wendy Heard!
Tumblr media
Welcome to Book-Keeping and my stop on the TBR and Beyond Tours blog + bookstagram tour for the latest YA thriller from Wendy Heard, We’ll Never Tell! I’ve got all the details for you below along with my Top 5 Reasons to Read, so let’s go!
About the Book
Tumblr media
title: We’ll Never Tell author: Wendy Heard publisher: Christy Ottaviano Books release date: 16 May 2023
An ambitious and juicy whodunit doused in Hollywood lore, perfect for readers of sexy summer thrillers like The Twin by Natasha Preston and The Agathas by Kathleen Glasgow and Liz Lawson.
No one at Hollywood High knows who’s behind We’ll Never Tell—a viral YouTube channel where the anonymous creators trespass behind the scenes of LA’s most intriguing locales. The team includes CASEY, quiet researcher and trivia champ; JACOB, voice narrator and video editor, who is secretly dating EDDIE, aspiring filmmaker; and ZOE, coder and breaking-and-entering extraordinaire.
Now senior year is winding down, and with their lives heading in different directions, the YouTubers vow to go out with a bang. Their last episode will be filmed at the infamous Valentini “murder house,” which has been left abandoned, bloodstained, and untouched since a shocking murder/suicide in 1972. When the teens break in, they capture epic footage. But someone trips an alarm, and it’s a mad dash to get out before the police arrive—at which point they realize only three of them escaped instead of four. Jacob is still inside, slain and bleeding out. Is his attack connected to the historic murder, or is one of their crew responsible?
A week of suspicions and cover-ups unfolds as Casey and her remaining friends try to stay alive long enough to solve murder mysteries past and present. If they do, their friendship may not survive. If they don’t, the house will claim more victims.

Top 5 Reasons to Read
1. We’ll Never Tell is the kind of YA thriller that keeps me coming back to the genre!
2. The tension ratchets up slowly from page one until I was flipping pages so quickly I had to go back to make sure I didn’t miss something.
3. Wendy Heard (can’t believe this is my first book by her!) had me bouncing back and forth with theories about what was going on the entire time to the big reveal, which I love when an author can do.
4. In addition to the thriller aspect, We’ll Never Tell also tenderly examines grief and the impact of trauma, specifically the loss of a parent, on a child and those around her.
5. The book also explores generational trauma and the idea of whether we are destined to repeat the past mistakes of our ancestors.
6. Bonus reason: I absolutely loved the connection to old Hollywood (even though “old” in this case is, like, 3 years before I was born, lol) and the inclusion of news clippings and letters!
RATING: 5 stars!
**Disclosure: I received an early copy of this book from the publisher for purposes of this blog tour.
Make sure you check out the bookstagram tour too! You can find my post here, and the full schedule is here.

Thank you Claire from Schuler Books: some data for Queen's Thief fans
The tl;dr of this post is that QT is having an unprecedented surge of interest right now, and I used GoodReads to deliver some facts and figures to the Discord (The Geninsula), and now to Tumblr!
Under the cut: sources of the uptick, beautiful numbers, and a couple fun excerpts from recent reviews.
Part 1: selling out is good
We can actually track the start of the surge back to 2020's publication of Return of the Thief, because the series being complete got it a lot of positive press, but the activity of the past couple months (especially February-now, I'm writing on May 31 2022), has been another thing entirely.
RotT, and Disney+ optioning The Thief, has meant we're getting a lot of new international editions. The UK is getting a beautiful release of new editions in paperback and audiobook. The series is being translated into Spanish and Italian for the first time, and we know in The Geninsula of translations underway into Hebrew and Bangla. (Parts of the series have previously been released in at least 15 languages, but until now only Romanian had kept up with the whole set.) MWT is currently on a tour of Italy and the UK to promote these new editions, and a number of giveaways and influencer spotlights were arranged by publishers to get The Thief | Il ladro in readers' hands.
In March, the independent bookstore Schuler Books (not, as it has often been misreported, a library or Barnes & Noble) *posted a TikTok* of some of their staff showing off books they wish they could read for the first time, again. (It's adorable, click the link if you haven't seen it.) This TikTok went viral, now with 17.5 million views, and it opens with Claire talking about The Thief.
Only two weeks later, The Thief was sold out in US paperback. I'm talking gone. Even Amazon cannot get you a new copy of either the 2017 (Joel Tippie) or 2005 (Vince Natale) covers anymore, previously readily available, let alone older ones. They have to reprint it! In the meantime, the Steve West audiobook seems to be doing very well, and the hardcover unremarkably. Several Geninsula members who are members of large library systems have reported long waitlists typical of bestsellers. I wholly attribute this attention to Claire. Claire is the best, our hero!
Lots of recent reviews (see below) also said Laini Taylor suggested it, but if there's a specific recent source for that (she's a known fan of long standing), I can't find it. Let me know if you know!
Part 2: GoodReads is useful sometimes
So GoodReads *has this nice feature* where they rank the top 200 books from each publishing year, with #1 being the one their users have most interacted with, and refresh it monthly [Edit: this was a mistype, it’s weekly]--so you can see which books of the same age have remained or become popular as of this month [Edit: week]. This does not mean it only accounts for what was interacted with within that month [Edit: week], just that it's that up to date.
Right now, The Thief is number 14 out of all of 1996. The books that beat it are all truly famous things like Bridget Jones's Diary, Angela's Ashes, Fight Club, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. (The only book ranked above it that hasn't been adapted for film is Neverwhere, which has received a radio play with a high-profile cast. [Edit: ...And is itself a novelization of a TV series.] [Edit: Infinite Jest has been a play, but not filmed.] I am making direct eye contact with Mickey Mouse.) Some of the other series marketed as fantasy it beats out include entries from Tortall, Discworld, The Witcher, and Redwall.
The Queen of Attolia is the only other one that is currently on the top 200 list for its year, but it's 77, above more Tamora Pierce, a boxset of A Song of Ice and Fire, and buzzy authors like Julia Quinn and Junji Ito.
The fact that a second book is ranking this high tells us people are currently working their way through the series in honestly what has to be large numbers. I won't be surprised if later books start ranking in the coming months.
It also tells us people really are actively reading them, not just marking the first one as possibly interesting--lots of users don't mark sequels as to-read until they've read the first, or the preceding one, etc.
Now, with the books ranked this high, how much interaction does that represent? Well, The Thief has 77,921 ratings, and 236,000+ shelvings, and considering that finishing without rating is somewhat uncommon…that's about 150,000 users who are planning to read, or currently reading, this book. The same math for QoA is less dramatic--about 20k people have it on the agenda--but when 20k is 50% of its all-time ratings, that's...still an explosion.
This of course only represents the people who a) use GoodReads and b) keep up with their to-be-read list there, so this is only a fraction of readers in general who are likely to read it in the near future.
Part 3: The reviews are in
Giveaways of advance reader copies in the UK led to a burst of reviews in February, which were a bit puzzling to read through, as a number of them seemed to me to have come from people who did not know the genre or even the age market for the book when they entered for it, and hadn't actually been drawn to the story therefore.
A much more striking wave of reviews came later, as the UK, Spanish, and Italian readers began to interact with it organically, and a large burst of people who specifically said they'd picked it up because of Claire from Schuler Books. (Or, more often, "A TikTok with a cute librarian [sic].") These reviews have the usual range of reactions, but an overall level of enthusiasm I feel is high.
Laini Taylor was the second-most successful recommender. Many people compared The Thief favorably to Rick Riordan, Leigh Bardugo, GRR Martin, and Sarah J. Maas. (This was the first time I'd seen the series pitched to SJM's fans! I haven't read her work, but hadn't thought it was in a similar niche.) I was delighted to see several people calling it the best fantasy of travel and landscape they've read since JRR Tolkien!
The apparent age range of reviewers is quite wide, which reflects my experience of the fandom, where I've regularly chatted with people from 13 to their 60s, and likely older. There were some very cute reactions from reviewing tweens and teenagers who said that they were surprised such an OLD book from the nineties held up.
Some other book trend remarks I found interesting: lots of surprise there was no romance, including some people who, looking for a potential romance among the traveling party, proposed both Gen/Sophos (fine) and Gen/the magus (insane, thank you so much, I have questions.) A number of people who remarked that they were pleased to find a fantasy that wasn't "too fantastical," lots of positivity about feeling it had a "timeless" style, and one person who said they have found it difficult to find engaging recent YA books with boy protagonists.
Delightful excerpts from reviews of TT:
a novel that is a credit to the English language.
I loved the world MWT created, had it been an artwork it would perhaps have been more Claude Monet than Michelangelo
[Original review in Spanish, from Argentina] Gen is the best thing that has ever happened to me
The Thief also pairs very nicely with cheese and dried fruit.
The importance of narrators:
I'm giving this a 5 star rating because I listened to it as an audiobook and the narrator sounds like Henry Cavill and I have a crush on him. So, 5 stars.
And my favorite reaction to The Queen of Attolia:
This is shockingly...kinky???
Okay, thanks for reading! I'm really excited, since it looks like the fandom is in the process of...tripling? Something like that. If you have news about how the book is being promoted, or new translations/re-releases, I'd love to hear!

Bookshop AU + scars?
hmmm a good one a good one maybe i'd write something like -- buck, after years of trying to find his place in the world, goes out on a limb and instead of becoming a firefighter buys a small corner space: it takes his entire life's savings and he's not even sure what he's going to do with it, but fuck it if he's not ready to find his path and if he has to make it himself, then so be it. (also, considering the apartments the show has them living in, i, too, will suspend disbelief re: their financial situations, thank you) this shop happens to be near a fancy-looking fire station -- the 118, the sign above it reads, and while buck spends his afternoons sitting in the middle of this empty space, he loves watching the firetrucks leave, arrive, leave, arrive, and he always makes bets with himself, like, how long will it be this time? where could they have gone today? sometimes he’ll bring a lawn chair and sit outside the space, with one of the many books he’s collected throughout his travels, and this is how he meets bobby for the first time. the tall captain’s making his way to the coffee shop next door, and he spots buck — mid-20s, ratty t-shirt, faded jeans — sitting in a lawn chair minding his own business and he’s like, “uh? you okay?” buck and bobby hit it off immediately, obviously. buck explains he’s sitting in front of his own space so he’s not really loitering, and he’s been trying to to decide what he’s gonna do with it. bobby looks at him thoughtfully and suggests buck look at the things around him, what they’re lacking, then at the things buck loves, and see if there isn’t an overlap. buck thanks him, makes some dumb joke about the firehouse captain getting his own coffee, and they part ways. eventually, he meets the rest of the 118: hen, who’s curious about the “tall white boy who is all legs” that sits outside the space for hours at a time, reading a different book every time; chimney (who refuses to explain the nickname), who bet hen he could guess what book he was reading today (he couldn’t); and eddie.
eddie is — buck’s pretty sure what would happen if “buck’s type” and “buck’s wet dream” clashed and formed an entire human being. eddie is way too attractive to be real, and buck manages to fumble through a conversation with him — where he says the words i’m actually just chillin’, like a fucking idiot — before eddie smiles quizzically at buck’s entire, like, thing and heads to the coffee shop, leaving buck to privately hit his head against today’s book (a wyoming travel guide, of all things) in embarrassment. except when eddie comes back out, four coffee cups in a holder, he says to buck, “you know, with all the books you go through, you could probably open a book store.” and it’s like a lightbulb moment — wherein another person screwed in the lightbulb for buck, i mean. so buck gets to work — he doesn’t actually own enough books to fill a bookstore, but when he tells his new friends at the 118 about his ideas, they start donating old books — and their friends start donating old books — and eventually, buck’s got just enough to get himself started.
buck opens the strangest, most quaint used bookstore known to los angeles, california. why? because there’s really no rhyme or reason to it. there’s no order to it — buck kind of just makes up sections (“books that spoke to me at three in the morning”, “books that are not appropriate for children, kids stay out”, “books that made me want to call my sister”, etc.) and he — kind of becomes a success when hen brings denny to the store and he makes a semi-viral tiktok out of it. eventually, the hype dies down, but he retains some loyal customers, and that’s all that matters.
what matters most, though, in buck’s opinion, are the months that follow: eddie comes in every weekend with the most adorable fucking kid on earth — christopher, he introduces himself cheerfully — and they take home exactly one book each every time. christopher will stay away from the sections clearly marked “no children here” (later, buck will add, “YES EVEN YOU CHRIS”) and eddie will carefully peruse through some of the more obscure sections (“books that fed my addiction to cheese”, “books that made me believe in aliens but only from mars”) and pick out what seems like the most interesting one for the weekend.
they’ll stay for an hour, maybe two. buck and eddie will talk about everything and nothing at all — they’ll gauge enough about each other to be friends, but not enough to be closer than that, and, fuck, does buck want to be closer than that. eddie has eyes that promise to tell him a thousand stories and he has scars on his skin that promise to tell him a thousand more, and he wants to know every single part of the man that smiles softly at him in awe, like he’s the most interesting sight he’s laid his eyes on, when he goes on an unrelenting rant.
so one weekend, once christopher is gone and knee-deep in the “books that will definitely make you want to be a (freelance) knight” section, buck looks over at eddie and asks him what his favorite book is. eddie, a little taken aback, admits that he doesn’t think he has one. buck hums, like the tidbit is Very Interesting Indeed, and eddie raises an eyebrow and asks, “why? what’s yours?”
joke’s on eddie, because that’s exactly what buck had wanted him to ask.
buck tells him he’ll tell eddie — in fact, he’ll even trade him a copy of his favorite book — for a story. eddie looks at him a little quizzically, like he’s having trouble understanding the concept, so buck explains that he’s collected way more than just books during his travels: he’s collected stories. and stories are all he’s made up of, and stories are all he loves to hear. it makes him feel like he’s part of something bigger — he collects them like secrets, keeps them close to his chest for himself, for a rainy day.
so buck points at a scar on eddie’s lips, and says, “you tell me the story behind that scar, i’ll trade you my favorite book.”
and eddie is — endeared? charmed? very confused? buck can’t really keep up with the plethora of emotions that flash past his expression, but eventually eddie concedes, and tells buck about the story behind the scar on his lip.
it’s a childhood scar, buck learns. eddie had been playing on a trampoline at his grandmother’s house and he’d bet his sisters he could do a backflip — turns out, he could do a backflip, but he back-flipped off the entire trampoline and hit his mouth on the edge of it. blood for ages, he says, laughing at the memory. he was sure he’d cracked some teeth — was lucky he didn’t. just the scar to remind him that he does not, in fact, have the spacial awareness he thought he did.
buck, satisfied with this response, hands him a copy of holes. he doesn’t tell eddie it’s his personal copy — leaves that tidbit out, content to see eddie’s gaze soften at the gift.
and then it just — keeps happening.
a book for a story. buck asks about a visible scar on eddie’s person and eddie will tell him the story behind it; for every story he tells buck, buck will gift him a copy that means a lot to him. the first book he ever learned to read himself; the first book he ever stole from a library (he forgot to return it, okay); the first book he read so much he wore out.
sometimes, eddie’ll take a second to gather himself before telling buck a story — in these instances, buck promises eddie he doesn’t have to tell him anything, but eddie seems like he’s determined to tell buck about it, and buck will learn about his time overseas, in the military; his adventures in firefighting; his brief stint in street fighting, of all things; childhood stories that involve his grandmother, his aunts, his sisters, even, more than they ever do his parents.
he’ll learn eddie, too, is made up of dozens of stories, and it’ll open up the most beautiful sight buck’s ever laid eyes upon: a man, filled to the brim with love and affection, feeling lonely and guilty every day of his life, unable to leave his stories in the past where they belong. so he gifts them to buck, and buck keeps them as he keeps all the others: close to his chest, closer still to his heart, and he begins to carry them for eddie, watching as, one by one, the weight begins to leave this wonderful man, leaving behind only the love and affection buck thinks he glows with.
eventually, buck runs out of scars to point out — he smiles sadly at eddie that day, says he guesses maybe it’s for the best: wouldn’t want eddie sharing anything else he’s not ready to share. eddie looks at him, a little conflicted, before his lips turn up into a slow smirk and he says something buck is probably going to be dreaming about for the rest of his entire fucking life: “you know, i got a couple more scars where you can’t immediately see. maybe you can inquire about those sometime.”
(and buck, eventually, very much does.)
(though eddie would super appreciate it if it wasn’t while he was trying to go down on buck, thanks.)

I am very glad I am not into tiktok outside the video people I follow here repost, that place sounds utterly miserable.
See honestly, I can see both sides of it. Like. Obviously Tiktok is a breeding ground for bad ideas, stupid people and absolute shenanigans. I myself am guilty of hate watching problematic users and quietly going under my breath 'what the fuck is wrong with you, when did you fucking jump TRACKS' And there's a WEIRD amount of problematic vegans on there for some reason? or the algorithm just thinks I WANT to see the most problematic vegans on there. Which I do. Cause I wish to mock them with an audience of just myself.
But Tiktok has done many a good thing for me
-It's opened me up to a lot of new and different music I normally wouldn't get into, like Ghost, and many independent artists like Rio Romeo. I'm honestly trying a genre of music called 'Neoclassical Darkwave' cause I heard about it and it's.....REALLY trippy. Like Scary video game sound track weird. I like it honestly.
-Taught me how to microwave a potato to perfection so the skin isn't a hard shell but soft and tender. And how to reheat rice without it drying out. It's honestly taught me a LOT about cooking and honestly I enjoy watching other people from other countries cook on there.
-Helped me trouble shoot my computer and fix obs REPEATEDLY.
-Shown me new genres of literature. Been trying to get into SplatterPunk as of late; kinda hard to find at the regular bookstore, but I'm working on it. Also given me a shit ton of manga recommendations that are A plus.
-Gotten me into a lot of weird movies, shows and short films and indie animated things that I DIDNT think I would get into but I'm weirdly fascinated with.
So like.
Is it a terrible place? Oh fuck yes, fucking absolute nightmare fire and I don't mean that in like a endearing way; like I have seen and interacted with some fucking IDIOTS on there.
Is it useful to me? Oh yeah.
