New Single Chapter Fics Under the OFMD Tag on AO3, comparing 2022 & 2023 / S1 & S2
The number of new single chapter fics under the OFMD tag on AO3 has been under observation since July. It's time to wrap this up and post the finalised graphs:
Weekly new single chapter fics (1 July - 1 December 2022 and 2023)
Daily new single chapter fics (September-November 2022 and 2023)
Daily new single chapter fics (3 weeks during and 5 weeks after S1 & S2)
Multichapter fics were not counted since it's difficult to get that data from AO3. Also, multichapter fics aren't necessarily as good at reflecting the level of "acute inspiration" as single chapter fics.
The data was collected by Tikli on 3 December 2023.
First, let's look at the weekly data during the 22 week observation period (1 July - 1 December 2022 and 2023).
Tumblr media
The total number of new fics during the observation period was 5,000 (weekly average 227) in 2022 and 5,272 in 2023 (5.4% more than the previous year; weekly average 240).
In July and August 2022, the number of weekly new fics was clearly higher than in 2023.
In September, the difference between years wasn't as clear; first half of the month had more new fics in 2023 and the second half had more new fics in 2022.
Kinktober caused a spike in the numbers at the beginning of October both years.
In 2022, the numbers declined rapidly after the first week of October and in November, the weekly numbers were below the weekly average. After the first week of October, there were more weekly new fics in 2023 than in 2022.
In 2023, season 2 aired on 5 October and the weekly numbers grew each week during the season. The numbers declined the week after the finale aired, and in November, they were below the lowest week of October. During the last two weeks of November 2023, the weekly numbers were below the weekly average.
Highest weekly number in 2022 was 485 (30 Sep - 6 Oct). In 2023, it was 581 (21-27 Oct, the week when the final episode aired).
Lowest weekly number in 2022 was 142 (25 Nov - 1 Dec). In 2023, it was 84 (1-7 Jul).
Next, let's take a closer look at the daily numbers during September-November 2022 and 2023.
Tumblr media
The total number of new fics during the observation period was 2,906 (daily average 32) in 2022 and 4,160 (43% more than the previous year; daily average 46) in 2023.
In September, the lines of both years are overlapping (between 13 and 47, daily average 25 in 2023 and 26 in 2022). After S2 trailer on 14 Sep there’s a noticeable spike in the numbers.
S2 aired between 5-26 October. During the same period in 2022, the number of daily fics was between 27 and 73 (daily average 45). During the airing of S2 the daily number was between 55 and 102 (daily average 72).
After the finale of S2 (27 Oct -30 Nov), the numbers decline rapidly, ranging between 17 and 100 (daily average 45). During the same period in 2022, daily number was between 12 and 45 (daily average 24).
After mid-November, the lines of both years start overlapping again (between 12 and 47, daily average 31 in 2023 and 20 in 2022).
Finally, let's compare the number of daily new single chapter fics during the three weeks when seasons were airing and during the five weeks after the season finale.
Tumblr media
Season 1 started streaming on 3 March 2022 and Season 2 on 5 October 2023. New episodes aired weekly on Thursdays and the final episode aired three weeks after the season started.
The total number of new single chapter fics during the observation period was 3,088 in 2022 and 3,164 in 2023 (2.5% more than the previous year)
During the three weeks when the new season was airing (counting the air date of the final episode), the daily average of new fics was 7 in 2022 and 72 in 2023.
During the five weeks after the final episode, the daily average of new fics was 84 in 2022 and 45 in 2023.
The highest daily number in 2022 was 125 fics 17 days after the finale aired. In 2023, the highest daily number was 102 fics on the day the finale aired.
The lowest daily number after the finale of season 1 was 56 fics the next day after the finale. After the finale of season 2, the lowest daily number was 17 fics three weeks after the finale aired.
Five weeks after the final episode, the number of daily new fics was 68 in 2022 and 25 in 2023.

Hello. Here are a couple of older woman/younger man fics for you...
Going Down (now with 99% less cringe) by tikli (E)
The new intern at Miss Fell’s office has caught her eye. They’ve been flirting for two weeks. What happens when they get stuck in a lift together?
or: Older Busty Blonde Seduces Hot New Intern
Being Neighbourly by Ack_Emma (E)
Innocent college freshman Aziraphale introduces himself to his seductive neighbour and offers to help out around her home.
Antonia Crowley is glad for the help and makes sure to pay him properly for the work.
Hell Has a Place For Those Who Sin by TawnyOwl95 (E)
"Are you trying to seduce me, Mrs Morningstar?"
Really though, how else is a young man with a new degree and ambition supposed to react to that?
Honeysuckle & Heat Waves by pilatesandpinot (E)
Ezera Fell has returned to the town where she’d spent her summers growing up – seaside Tadfield, where the slogan is “Everyday is a Holiday” and the perfect escape for a recent divorcee like herself. But she isn’t just here for holiday or to “get her groove back”; she’s inherited her late aunt Agnes Nutter's bed and breakfast and is determined to restore it to its former glory. She’s consulted the help of the best gardener in town, except there’s one issue: he’s Anthony Crowley, the same man she serendipitously had a one-night stand with while on holiday in Paris. Will the sparks fly now that they’ve been reunited, or fizzle out?
And the one you mentioned...
watermark by summerofspock (T)
Aziraphale happily works as the librarian of a small liberal arts university in the rural town of Tadfield. When the newly hired biology professor seems to enjoy tormenting his students by sending them after obscure references, she decides he needs a stern talking to. He decides they could be pretty good friends.

I can explain! I have to start by defining "anti-ship", because that term actually came first. Basically, a while ago, probably close to 10 years now, people started getting sorta hostile over ships that "squicked" them. Basically, people on here mostly, and other fandom sites too, would start listing "Anti-" before specific ship names, to show that they were hostile to people who shipped them. They would do this in tags (often to make sure it didn't appear in the shippers tags, actually) or in bio, to let shippers know they would go after you and even post callouts if you liked the ship they were against. Sometimes it was more like a Do Not Interact, but generally it got pretty bad. They also self-identified as "antis" or "anti-[ShipName]".
So in response to the increasingly hostile and harassing behaviour of people who were "anti-ship", other people started putting "anti-anti" in their bio. Basically, "If you are against other ships to the point of identifying as an 'anti', then I am against you, and the concept of BEING an anti. Basically I don't care what anyone ships, you can interact with me safely." "Anti-Anti" was just an "I won't hurt you over fiction" sign on peoples blogs and accounts. More of a safety signal to others. However Anti-anti was also very confusing as a term, tbh, and slowly over time, people were like... "Hmm, well the opposite of being anti-something is being pro-something, so lets start using the term 'Pro-ship' instead."
Since then, the terms have gotten muddied. Antis became less of "I hate THIS PARTICULAR ship" and more "I hate people who like this group of specific fictional taboo tropes or kinks". Proshippers became less of "I don't care what you ship" and became more of a "Censorship is bad, and I stand for anti-harassment, pro-kink, and sex-positivity" vibe. Also Proshippers have a "Don't Like; Don't Read" and "Ship and Let Ship" mentality. These were older fandom terms that were summarized by curating your reading and interaction to what you yourself are comfortable with. Blocking and muting, reading tags properly, and using the back button on your browser are considered the best ways of avoiding the fictional "squicky" stuff that grosses you out.
Antis also began heavily attacking the proshippers as a whole, even to the point of lying about what it means. Antis made up a lie that the "pro" in proship stands for "problematic", as a way of making them seem evil and gross. Antis started calling SPECIFIC PAIRINGS "proships" which actually doesn't make any sense. Antis also lie and tell ppl "proshippers ship any pairing that would be illegal in real life" when the actual ships have NOTHING to do with the term "proship".
Many people who are proship have literally the same ships as antis, and are squicked out by taboo kinks... they just don't believe in attacking people over it, cause it's just fiction.
Recently a group of antis who think "proship means problematic" ALSO made up the term "proship neutral" which actually is the original definition of proship, ie. "don't care what ppl ship".

For the 40th list, a special couple - Madame Tracy and Sergeant Shadwell! It should have been number 38, after the week that was dedicated to Anathema and Newt, but Tumblr ate the draft so here we are.
As always, the stories are SFW, and the description includes rating, word count and main characters.
Four fingers. One thumb. And a bouquet. by @be-kind-to-each-otter   - rated G, 398 words. Summary: "Oh, Mister Shadwell… You remembered?" He hadn't. ~  ~  ~  ~  ~  ~  ~ In which Tracy catches Shadwell in the entryway to their flats with a bouquet of flowers in hand.
Christmas Spirits by Argyle - rated G, 445 words. Summary: Captain Ffolkes was dead, to begin with.
The Arrangement by ngk_is_cool (me!) - rated G, 8.3K. Summary: Marjorie Potts always knew she was different. Not only because she preferred dyeing her hair over gushing over a pretty flower, but also because she can speak with ghosts. Armed with the armour of righteousness, a secret, freshly dyed red hair and a heavy wallet (a goodbye gift from Ms. Anning, who was kind enough to show her a treasure that was hidden in the wall of her former house), she left her village in favour of the big city, to seek new adventures and change the world.
Friends and Comrades by HopeCoppice - rated G, 500 words. Summary: The day before Madame Tracy moves in next door, Shadwell has a completely normal day with his friends and comrades - with no idea how his life is about to change.
A Little Bungalow, Somewhere Outside London by bethagain - rated G, 557 words. Summary: Shadwell's not much for conversation. Tracy finds that she's just fine with that.
Old Witchfinders Never Die by PeniG - rated G, 5.6K. Also Aziraphale, Crowley, The Them and Death. CW - secondary character death. Summary: Even someone who doesn't take any better care of himself than Sgt. Shadwell can last a long, long time with the help of an angel, a demon, and the Hoor of Babylon. But that doesn't mean he's any readier to go when Death comes for him.
Witchfinding for Beginners  by @unproblematicme - rated T, 420 words. Summary: Communication is key. Sometimes it doesn’t quite fit.
A Year In The Life of Marjorie Potts by @moveslikebucky - rated T, 1.8K. Summary: Marjorie Potts moves to London in August of 1966. This is her first year there.
Never Too Old by tikli - rated T, 403 words. Summary: A missing scene set immediately after Sergeant Shadwell had "popped the question".
Professional Services by @fenrislorsrai - rated T, 499 words. CW - implied Sexual Content, food mentioned Summary: Shadwell's new neighbor needs his professional services... as a lockpicker. This customer is FIRED as soon as they get the handcuffs off him.
Authors - if you wish that your Tumblr account will be tagged, instead of the AO3, please comment or DM me the handle. Thanks :)
Bonus - master list with all past recommendations!

Tikli's currently working on the follow-up report to the "Ship Tags and Ratings of OFMD Fanfiction on AO3" (https://ofmdresearch.neocities.org/PDF/ship_tags_and_ratings.pdf), so there's going to be a comparison between 25 November 2022, 30 August 2023 and 29 November 2023. Hopefully it will be done before Christmas, but no promises 😅
A while back, when there was concurrent ship discourse on Twitter and Tumblr, I started looking at the AO3 statistics for OFMD to get a sense of what the actual proportions are of different ships. The basic stats are pretty clear from the sorting sidebar:
Blackbeard | Edward Teach/Stede Bonnet (12321)
Blackbeard | Edward Teach/Israel Hands (2269)
Black Pete/Lucius Spriggs (1561)
Blackbeard | Edward Teach/Stede Bonnet/Israel Hands (1411)
Oluwande Boodhari/Jim Jimenez (1394)
Stede Bonnet/Israel Hands (976)
Israel Hands/Lucius Spriggs (839)
Blackbeard | Edward Teach & Israel Hands (677)
Israel Hands/"Calico" Jack Rackham (474)
Minor or Background Relationships (283) (label not appearing in pie chart)
Tumblr media
However! There's a significant amount of overlap with some of these. Pete/Lucius and Jim/Olu are common side ships to Ed/Stede, for instance - 327 fics are tagged with only Ed/Stede and Pete/Lucius (23% of the Pete/Lucius tag), 195 fics are tagged with only Ed/Stede and Olu/Jim (14% of the Olu/Jim tag), and 749 fics are tagged with Ed/Stede, Pete/Lucius, and Olu/Jim (48% of the Pete/Lucius tag and 54% of the Olu/Jim tag).
It's also common for fics with Ed/Stede/Izzy to tag one or more of the two-person ships that make up the triad - 378 (27% of the Steddyhands total) include all four ships, and each of the side ships have 600-700 fics that overlap with Steddyhands in some way. As best as I can tell from careful inclusions and exclusions in the filters, there are 11,106 fics that are just Ed/Stede and not the other three, 1,113 that are just Ed/Izzy, 456 that are just Ed/Stede/Izzy, and 248 that are just Stede/Izzy.
Tumblr media
So then I went in and tried to find the data for fics with each of the ships as the only pairing out of the group (italics indicate that the label wouldn't generate because the slice was so small, but this is the order they appear in in the chart):
Blackbeard | Edward Teach/Stede Bonnet (9294)
Blackbeard | Edward Teach/Israel Hands (898)
Black Pete/Lucius Spriggs (214)
Blackbeard | Edward Teach/Stede Bonnet/Israel Hands (426)
Oluwande Boodhari/Jim Jimenez (320)
Stede Bonnet/Israel Hands (236)
Israel Hands/Lucius Spriggs (411)
Blackbeard | Edward Teach & Israel Hands (160)
Israel Hands/"Calico" Jack Rackham (279)
Minor or Background Relationships (31)
Tumblr media
This isn't perfect - there's no way to filter main vs. background ships, so there's no way for me to differentiate between an Ed/Stede fic with Lucius/Pete and Olu/Jim tagged for background mentions and an Olu/Jim fic with Lucius Pete and Ed/Stede tagged for background mentions; there are also even smaller ships that come into play once I cropped out the heavy hitters. However, I think this data gives a clearer picture of authorial priorities on AO3.

Eight for Eight
Got tagged by lovely @mademoiselle-lani
Rules: Answer eight questions and tag eight people.
Last movie I watched: I guess it was Lights out with my sister. Wasn’t that bad to be honest, suprisingly short though.
Last song I listened to: Grande Finale by Studio Killers
Last book I read: Like start to finish? I am currently (still reading like after six months) Tikli by Donna Tart. Last one I read from start to finish was probably The explained Dictionary of Finnish mythology or something like that translated to English.
Last thing I ate: Cookies, healthy eh?
Where would you time travel to?: Probably to some big and meaningful event in history just to see how did it really happen. The further the better.
Fictional character I would hang out with for a day: Roxy Morton. Deffinetley my Lancelot.
If I could be anyhwere right now, where would I be?: accepted in University of Lapland and studying there.
Current fandom obsession?: I don’t know? Kingsman is always there but haven’t been in Tumblr for ages so I don’t have access to the beautiful content so easily.lol
I’m tagging @wildkitte @mevahvistumme @the-fancy-bandit @missdeadbun @krakenbabypermitsit @emmudevill @usva-aave @khatyleen

What is Our Flag Means Research?
Our Flag Means Research functions as a shared space for the curious side of Our Flag Means Death fandom. It's a hub for all sorts of research that's connected to OFMD and its fandom. The focus or the type of research can be pretty much anything, as long as it's OFMD adjacent.
The level of academic professionalism or seriousness is not that important. The focus is on collecting this type of content in one place and making it accessible to everyone.
We will help those of you who are working on research projects by sharing information of your ongoing surveys, interview invitations and other studies that are looking for participants. We can also run polls to collect data.
We will share links to published results that are hosted somewhere in a way that is accessible to everyone (AO3, personal websites, Google Docs etc.)
Works shared via Our Flag Means Research may include content that is not suitable for children. Anyone submitting works must be at least 18 years old.
Under the cut:
Where to find us?
Submissions
Policies
Who are the people behind this whole thing?
Where to find us?
In addition to this Tumblr, we have a website, a Mastodon account and a Pillowfort account. We also have a Discord server.
Submissions
How do I make a submission?
Leave an ask on Tumblr, send a direct message on Mastodon or contact tikli on Discord. Tell what sort of submission you want to make:
Promote your upcoming/ongoing study in order to get more participants.
Collect data for your study via Tumblr and Mastodon polls.
Promote your published results.
What sort of works can I submit?
We're really not too picky. Survey results, media analysis, interviews, essays, statistical analysis... If it was born out of curiosity and you did it to find out about Something, it probably fits the bill.
We expect your work to be respectful towards others and not born out of malicious intent.
Policies
Do you focus on or avoid specific characters or ships?
The content we share comes from individual fans who are free to choose their subject however they please. We don't discriminate against any character or ship. Any perceived under- or overrepresentation is due to individual motivation.
What is your tagging policy on Tumblr/Mastodon/Pillowfort?
Submitters can suggest what tags they want to use with their content.
NSFW content will be marked as such on Pillowfort and content warnings will be added on Mastodon when needed. On Tumblr, Community labels will be used when needed. NSFW posts will also be tagged with #ofmdnsfw.
If the content focuses on a specific character(s) / ship(s), the established tags will be used when available.
What is your blocking policy?
As a general rule, the accounts on Tumblr, Pillowfort and Mastodon don't block anyone. However, targeting the accounts with harassment or interfering with the data collection in order to skew the results will lead to a block.
Who are the people behind this whole thing?
The admin of Our Flag Means Research is tikli. There is also a very loosely organised collective of Izzy enjoyers who are actively doing or planning on doing some research regarding OFMD.
Our previous projects used our personal accounts for data gathering, and that presented a problem with blocked accounts, possibly skewing the samples. A few of us had thought about making a new account for data collection purposes. It made a lot more sense to make just one account that everyone could use.
Our Flag Means Research started out on Twitter, but has since moved on to other platforms.
Despite the origins being in the Izzy corner of the fandom, Our Flag Means Research is for everyone who is interested in doing research about the show and the fandom.
