Put On Your Raincoats | Viva Vanessa (Pachard, 1984)

This review contains mild spoilers.

As far as biopics of Vanessa Del Rio go, this is likely a less fanciful account than Gregory Dark's Deep Inside Vanessa Del Rio, which alleges that Del Rio defected from Russia and worked as a sex toy salesperson, only to go back for a gangbang scene. But I do think this foregrounds the tension between the genre's artifice and reality in a pretty interesting way. We start off with Del Rio, trying to shoo a couple (Eric Edwards and Tiffany Clark) away after a tryst so she can prepare for a biopic about her life made by Henri Pachard. We see her recount her attempts to make it mainstream cinema, only to be taken advantage of by sleazy agents and producers (Robert Kerman and Jose Duval). Once again we have the tension between a scene that's pretty rotten in a real life context but played for you to get off on, but in this case that seems very much the point, and I think Del Rio's displeasure with these experiences comes through.

Then Del Rio switches to a pornographic career, working with a much more on the level Fred Lincoln (who tells her in his industry, "You fuck after you get the job"), who provides a supportive hand through the process. (Lincoln comes across as much less pungent than he did in his best known mainstream role in The Last House on the Left. The beard looks good on him.) A lot of the appeal of hardcore pornography comes from that fact that the performers are doing it for real, but Lincoln lampshades just how much artifice there is. When her male co-star has trouble remembering his lines, Lincoln steps in. "Let's just get on with the hardcore, and we'll work it out later in the editing room."

And we get scenes that are more obviously in the realm of fantasy, like where Del Rio picks up a pair of fans (Jerry Butler plays one of them) in a bar and takes them to the bathroom for a threesome. It's as if to say, if you step into a bar at the right time, you too could have sex with the great Vanessa Del Rio. (But be sure to bring a friend.) Of course, the scene snaps us back to some semblance of reality when it ends with a shot of a flushing toilet, which I understand the purpose of but really could have done without.

This tension between artifice and reality culminates in the climactic scene, a tense shoot where Del Rio is asked to share a scene with an ex-boyfriend played by George Payne, but isn't told beforehand. The idea is to find genuine emotion in their performances. As Pachard explains, "I don't know how much of it's gonna be real and how much of it isn't gonna be real, that's the chance we're taking. Try to find an erotic moment, let your heart out." And "I'm not asking you to do anything, except be yourself." But how genuine these performance are is questionable, as Payne insists on slathering himself in baby oil, and explains to Del Rio (after she tells him "You're not an asshole, you're a whole ass"): "I don't play nice guys in films, you know why? Because they pay me to be an asshole." The scene ends with Del Rio angrily walking off the set, while Pachard telling everybody what a great job they did.

Obviously these (as with all the other scenes) are dramatics within the movie, but I do wonder what Pachard's real thinking behind this scene was. There's a clip from an awards show where Pachard gives a nod to Francis Ford Coppola (who was present in the audience), and I do wonder if this is acknowledgement that art can be a messy, emotionally fraught process, made by people who could be callous people even if they don't think of themselves as such. I don't think this has the same angst as something like Gerard Damiano's Skin Flicks, which ends on a much more challenging note, but it is interesting to see something that's more cliche ridden still try to grapple with these questions.

Of course, it's no surprise that this ends (along with a threesome, and a striptease where she wears a sparkly tuxedo and hat) with Del Rio deciding that she's gonna go back and finish the movie because she's a goddamn professional. Del Rio has always been a magnetic screen presence (and enjoyable to watch for... other reasons), and this movie is no exception. If there's one other thing I can single out in this movie, it's a scene between Del Rio and Angelique Ricard. Ricard is a trans performer who I'd previously seen in a non-sex role in Squalor Motel (she plays a member of the house band). Considering how gross pornography can be with respect to transwomen, this scene is refreshingly free of those dimensions. The scene is appreciative, not fetishistic, and has a casual, relaxed vibe that I found quite appealing. Certainly a nice surprise.

To be completely honest with you, it has taken me a while to find my last line... I started finals season yesterday, so you can imagine that I didn't have much time to write lately.

Luckily for me, it was an interesting one, so i'm giving you a little more fo context<3

Tiffany focused her gaze on her nephews again. They were still standing in front of her, with their hands behind their backs, but they weren't smiling as they were before she came in. She noticed how they were taller than her, and almost as tall as Isadora when she wore high heels. She noticed how the three of them shared Austen's eyes, her own brother. The same eyes that were distinctive in the family. So different from her own daughter's green ones. The only trait Isadora had inherited from the Da Ville's was her grandmother's nose, thin and straight, as if she was permanently with her head raised up. It gave her a sophisticated air, Tifanny always said so. In everything else, her daughter had always looked like her father, a complete irony of the universe. Isa was almost identical to a human being that had never wanted to know of her existence. Of course, on the practical matter, Carter was as good father as her real one would've been, but Tiffany couldn't avoid looking at her daughter's eyes and see those of the man who erased himself from the Da Ville's history because of his own insecurities.

Le daba un aire sofisticado, Tiffany siempre se lo decía. En todo lo demás, su hija siempre se había parecido a su padre, una completa ironía del destino.  Isa era casi igual a un ser humano que nunca había querido saber de su existencia. Por supuesto, a efectos prácticos, Carter era tan buen padre para ella como lo hubiera sido su verdadero progenitor, pero Tiffany no podía evitar mirar a los ojos a su hija y ver los de aquel hombre que se borró de la historia de los Da Ville por ser demasiado inseguro.

It's quieter at night. And that's good, it lets her be alone more with her thoughts & feelings. It the same little spot tucked away from the proper of Costa Del Sol, but not far away enough for wildlife to get too close, almost like a hiding spot.

Which is what Tiffanie wants right now. Somewhere to hide, she can't show her face around anymore, she's quite sure there's someone who doesn't want to see her face anymore anyway. And that's her lament to face. She sits with her knees up, arms around them like a hug, her eyes are looking out towards the sea, but her mind is completely else where. It's not the first, nor is it likely to be the last she replayed what she did in her mind, what she said, & each time she only grows more upset. Angry at herself, & so sad for him. He did not deserve that, Thancred did not deserve that. Hell, her sister is Ivy, & if someone said that to her, Tiffanie feel implied to rip their tongue out... fitting, since that's what she wanted to do to herself right now.

'I'm not another notch for your belt.' 'You thought I was trying to get into your pants already as /another notch for my belt/?'

"Twelve, I'm such a fucking bitch... what's wrong with me...." She presses her face tightly into her knees, her words to... well... herself... coming out muffled as such. "Why did I say that.... he's not like that." That was the real question, why did she say that? Even if he was just playing around with her, he would not... make Tiff another 'notch on his belt'... she really used the worst possible words, didn't she? ... Maybe... she's scared that's all it was... maybe she defaulted to that idea, because if it turned out to be true, it would hurt less. But at what cost? Save herself, but hurt him? That's just not worth it.

He's always been very kind & patient with her... even when he wasn't as patient with Ivy sometimes. He's been a tease lately, but his core towards Tiffanie was kind, caring, & gentle. And this is how she repays him. This was the last thing he deserved from her. He had been kind, gentle... soft... considerate even if a little pushy.... When he's not smirking like a little shit, he had quite kind smiles that were genuine, it was once of those things she liked about him, she saw those just as much the smirks. And when she thinks with a clearer head now back to the moment, though he smirked at first, that expression disappeared & been replaced with softer ones. He had been quite gentle with her the whole time, only as assertive as he needed to be to try & push her out of her shell... even... even the kiss was gentle. She still thinks she can slightly feel it. Then she can remember how his expression totally shifted after she said the worst thing she could... & how quickly any light left his eyes.

"TWELEVE. I AM SUCH A FUCKING STUPID BITCH, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH ME. HE DIDN'T DESERVE THAT, HE'S NOT LIKE THAT. I. KNOW. BETTER!!!" This time she partially yelled her thoughts outloud, raising her head just so she could smack herself in the forehead more then a few times. If someone told her she have a bruise there the next day, it would not be surprised.

She calms down then her forehead starts hurting, sighing aloud & going back to hugging her legs, resting her chin on her knees. "In an effort to not ruin our relationship with unrequited love, I went & ruined it in an even worse way." She spoke it outloud to herself, disappointed more then anything. Her crushes have never mattered, so having someone act of them... confused & scared her. It's not an excuse, so knows, she'll have to live with what she did & it's consequences... even if that consequence is Thancred never wanting to see her ever again.

She just wants to tell him she's truly sorry. He deserves an apology.

Maybe she can say it, but not by mouth, talking was never her strongest suit & her mouth had gotten her in enough trouble. Even if... he doesn't understand it, he probably won't, but she can say it in a way that's impossible for her to mess up.

The entire song just screams Tiffany! Almost every line describes her power and complexity. She’s both exceptionally strong and incredibly gentle, understanding yet challenging, sweet and caring yet stubborn and wild. Also, that 1970s-style rock ballad vibe is perfect for my girl.
