Lupin Doctober #4

Petty Revenge / The reason they had to rob a bank

Theft was an addiction, Albert reasoned. Like any other addiction, it could be treated with enough time and willpower.

There were those who give in to the addiction, treated a vice like a virtue, looked down on anyone who doesn't share their illness. People like Lupin, who for all their brilliance never seem to have moved past puberty. Albert stayed away from those people.

He cultivated a completely normal hobby of collecting and restoring old pocket watches. Delicate tools teased at ancient gears and springs and he tried not to think of popping safes for sport.

He dated a normal man who never asked too many questions about his job or his past, because Tickey knew what he was getting into by dating a politician.

He wore the most dull and normal suits the stores could offer, leading his colleagues to joke that he couldn't really be gay because he wasn't flamboyant enough to qualify.

And, every so often, he stole the prime minister of Japan's pocket watch or broke into a highly secured bank and removed a single bill. Just to take the edge off, you know. Because he was a fucking adult and could control himself, unlike the teenager in a man's body he was currently feuding with.

Neither Albert nor Lupin wanted to admit how much they were enjoying this newest grudge match. Matching wits with someone at your level, hiding your vulnerabilities while showing off all the places you've improved, trying to figure out where the other still had their old weaknesses or if they'd adapted to them over the years, had a zing that was hard to get off antique watches. It was a thrill, and a very distracting one, for the both of them.

Then Lupin fucked up the timing, and in the middle of Albert pretending he didn't know the 'Tickey' he had over for a nice romantic night in was Lupin and Lupin pretending he didn't know Albert knew, the actual Tickey showed up.

"Uh."

Albert's boyfriend stood in the doorway, staring at the perfect copy of himself lounging against the couch. Albert fumbled, wide-eyed, while Lupin just gave his double a flirty wink and sashayed out the door. Albert was left to make weak excuses about covert operations tech experimentation, and someone in his department being a joker, and he wasn't entirely sure Tickey was buying it even as he said it. Still, Tickey shrugged and fetched the wallet he'd forgotten in Albert's bedroom.

"So like that Lupin guy's disguises, yeah?"

"Yeah....like him."

There were things Albert kept from Tickey, and Tickey knew and respected it. You had to, when you were dating the General Director of the Judiciary Police. Lying was different - lying meant keeping track of all the lies you'd told before, it meant a deliberate deception instead of a simple excising, and the more you lied the easier it was to slip up. Lupin had, in one simple accident, made Albert more vulnerable and that lit a cold anger in him that hadn't been there before.

He scrapped his original plan for the next stage of their tete-a-tete, and instead escalated abut three steps ahead in retribution. Fuck that hairy little scarecrow, trying to be the gum in his gears, a pesky fly annoying a giant to death. France had no need of such pests.

BTW quick heads up while I'm here: I will be tagging all Part 6 posts as "lupin part 6 spoilers" so go ahead and blacklist that if you don't want to be spoiled! I honestly have no idea how I'm gonna watch this show because I'm too poor and lazy for Hidive but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it!

A collection of Tickey images! I used to be sad that we never got to see him wear the pink jacket he had on in the concept art, but he seems to be wearing it in the image Lupin is looking at with his eye piece. Still sad that this is all we got of him, and that most of his screen time is actually Lupin.

Even more so because even this new career stuff is just build-up for the real climax of the story, which is Albert musing that he needs a new identity and Tickey asking him what he thinks about Albert Pasco.

I really, really want to write about Albert starting a new life as someone who designs death traps for shady collectors and mob bosses and how Lupin likes to mess with him by waltzing right through all his traps without a scratch, but the effort that would go into detailing how and why Albert gets out of politics and why he picks this career is so daunting I doubt I ever will.
