Heist Society

I though I had read this book as a middle schooler since Perfect Scoundrels has been sitting on my shelf for as long as I could remember, but the further I got into the series, the less familiar it seemed. Despite not being a nostalgia-filled reread, it was an excellent series. Carter’s use of third-person narration in these books makes Kat a much more mature and really added to the style of the books overall. While I love first person in her other iconic series, this was the perfect choice for Heist Society. 

This was such a solid book. I’m pretty sure I read it in middle school (though I’m not entirely positive) but either way, Ally Carter knows how to write a book. The plot was exciting, Kat was a pretty awesome protagonist, and Hale was the ultimate companion. The heist itself was fun and I loved the overarching message about the dubious origins of much of the art that is in museums today. Heist Society doesn’t quite live up to Gallagher Girls, but it’s still super exciting to read.

Favorite Quote: Is a forged Picasso any less beautiful than a real one? Maybe it was just her, but Kat didn’t think so.

Kat really annoyed me at the beginning, but the story grew on me pretty quickly. This might be a hot take, but the crows WISH they had what the heist society has. I honestly never knew what was coming next during this one. Hale was great as always, and the story was so exciting to read. I actually found myself getting stressed for them at points when things seemed to be going wrong. The familial tension in this one was excellent as well and really added a layer of depth to the story. I don’t think I ever read this one when I was younger, but it was great anyway as a first-time read.

Favorite Quote: People make and break their own fortunes—they are masters of their own fate.

I wasn’t sure if it was possible to write the perfect conclusion to a series, yet here I am. The story was filled with secrets and intense scenes, but what really made it stand apart was how profound the emotions were throughout. The book dealt with grief and love and family in a surprisingly eloquent way. There were moments that made me tear up, become über frustrated, or be legitimately happy for the characters. I’ve always been a huge fan of Ally Carter’s, but I did not expect to be so moved by a goofy story about teenaged thieves.

Favorite Quote: Someday you will know that the heart is not always as wise as it is strong.

While this might not have been my absolute favorite series of Ally Carter’s, I honestly can say I enjoyed every second of reading it. Kat could be frustrating at times, but she was a well-rounded and genuinely interesting protagonist which I really appreciated from a YA novel. I loved her relationship with Hale, and the complexities of this thief-ridden family. Ally Carter truly has no flops (that I’ve read yet, at least) so definitely check out her books.

It was fun to see the two sets of characters mix, but it wasn’t anything particularly special. Macey and Hale were an interesting dynamic, but there was so much “action” that the dialogue kind of gotten thrown to the side.

Favorite Quote: You know, if I had feelings, that might have hurt them.

This was a fun companion to the series, but not quite as good as the books were. The story was a little hard to follow at time, but it was an exciting take on a locked-room mystery toward the end. Definitely a sweet message, but the story was kind of mid.

Favorite Quote: Money comes and goes, darling. Tiaras are forever. So are titles.

“Say no more.”

If you were Charles Xavier and you accidentally misplaced your team of misfit mutants (except for Beast, who has graduated to Avengerdom and isn’t even in this book), would you:

Call in a favor with the Avengers or the Fantastic Four to help you out?

Call your ex and ask him and his magnetic powers to come to your rescue?

Cut your losses and move on?

Travel the world to replace your boring wonderbread team with a bunch of spicier, kickassier mutants and forever rock the world?

The answer is obviously D. I am hyperventilating. At the end of this, I have to pick the best new character and I cannot. CANNOT.

See, we have so many options!

Option 1: A creepy adorable blue fuzzball who is hunted and persecuted for the way he looks. He also nearly gets straight up staked by an angry European mob, showing that this new iteration of the X-Men is a few shades darker than the last one. (I also feel that angry mobs happen a lot less in Europe than Marvel think they do, but hey.)

Kurt, baby? You know you can teleport yourself out of becoming a human shishkebab, right?

Option 2: A woman who is too good for you. And for me. For anyone, tbh. She can control the weather and step on me. She starts out as a goddess and it’s the accuratest.

Ororo Munroe is my religion.

Option 3: A Russian tin can man with a sweet, sweet heart. Soft boi in a hard shell.

Also featured as a very early cameo: llyana Rasputin in dashing Soviet fashion.

Option 4: An angry Canadian who has authority issues and claws.

Did you know? Wolverine was originally envisioned as an actual wolverine who was turned into a human being. I think we can all agree that this was the better option.

Option 5: An angry Native American who has authority issues and a very uninspiring power set. (Look, if your ‘super powers’ can feasibly be achieved by plenty of cardio and bringing along a well-trained labradoodle, I’m just not here for it.)

John Proudstar does tell Xavier to go suck a cactus. Ten points to Gryffindor!

This cast is rounded out by some returning faces:

An angry Japanese guy who has authority issues and fire powers.

An Irish ex-thief/also ex-cop with sonic powers.

Why is this group instantly more interesting than the OG5? Well, instead of five vaguely generic teenagers coming from sort of similar backgrounds (upstate New York, wealthy, white), we have a couple of older characters coming with wildly varying histories. Some of them even provide a proper through line for the ways mutants fit into society: Nightcrawler is hated and feared, Storm is revered, Wolverine has been recruited by the government and Colossus lives among humans, presumably hiding his powers.

But why has Charles X gathered all these mutants? Because the X-Men have vanished on this mysterious tropical island! All except for an amnesia-riddled Cyclops, who returned to the mansion to go get help! Even though he’s not sure how he escaped, exactly.

The new X-Men travel off, and in between their introductions and embarking on the plane, Sunfire threatens to leave the team about three times.

Important to note is that none of these mutants mesh well yet and, when they approach the island, Cyclops decides to pull a Fred and he splits up the team - precisely among the fault lines. Interestingly, none of these duos really get along: Sunfire, Wolverine and Thunderbird all have grumpy loner personalities, meaning they don’t play well with others. Sunfire manages to aggravate Kurt, who is possibly the easiest to get along with out of them all, and Wolverine, hilariously, has a really hard time with Bashee’s sonic shouting when Sean flies him down. But even Colossus and Storm, who will later end up one of the more powerful X-friendships, are unfamiliar, ill at ease in each other’s presence.

Anyway, odd shit keeps happening. The Blackbird Strato-Jet vanishes. Cyclops and Thunderbird deal with some stringly-strangly vines; Wolverine and Banshee fight with a giant crab, Colossus and Storm are threatened by a living avalanche and Sunfire and Nightcrawler get swarmed by ferocious birds. After these various altercations, each duo notices this huge temple (which wasn’t there before), almost as if some unseen force is leading them towards it.

At the temple, the new team reunites and there, they find the lost X-Men! And Angel promptly berates them for falling into this trap, because…

Who's been messing up everything? It was Krakoa all along!

Krakoa is a mutant island that feeds off of mutant energies and it released Cyclops because it thought it would bring back more mutant snacks. (Which evidently worked, seeing how Scott brought back Kurt and Piotr.)

The X-Men release the X-Men and together, they band together in awesome (and sometimes confusing) artwork to fight Krakoa.

In the end, mostly thanks to powerhouse Lorna, they launch the island INTO SPACE. And in the aftermath, Warren asks an important question:

Split into two teams/books and become instantly iconic? No? Not for another twenty years?

Best new character: Don’t make me do this.

Fine.

Okay. So, I don´t think I can judge these characters without taking into account what will happen to them in the future, so I won´t even try. While I love Wolverine and Colossus, two of my ever-favorites are Storm and Nightcrawler. Nightcrawler, because he represents the best of humanity: even though it would be so easy for him to hate mankind because of their prejudice and their hatred, he always chooses kindness, faith and optimism. Storm, because she is a queen and will become one of the most complex and well-written comic book superheroes: a goddess, a thief, a leader and one of the best female power fantasies ever.

I choose her. I always choose her.

Ugliest costume: None. I do want to note just how well the costumes are designed here: Storm’s tiara-and-cloak outfit is still iconic and Nightcrawler’s and Colossus’ looks are so good that they are still being used, decades later. Hats off to Cockrum.

What to read: This. It’s just good. The new team is leagues better than the old one and the twist that the villain is Krakoa holds up. Sure, it’s all still a little wordy and nobody ever bothers explaining what’s up with Sunfire wanting to leave every second, but it’s an excellent reboot and a milestone issue.

so...the last year has been rough. for everyone. but i’ve been lucky in a lot of ways, especially with the people in my life, and i wanted to take a second to thank some people on here. because genuinely, you guys mean so freaking much to me. i’ve had a lot of online friends in my life but none that feel so much like family. these are the people who have carried me through the last year, who’ve made me feel seen and heard and supported me in all my endeavors and just been wonderful to me all around. i love you guys, and happy new year <3

@neshatriumphs​ nesha, when i say that you’re our fandom mom i mean that you’re my family, i mean that you’re my biggest supporter, my inspiration, my rock, the person who makes me want to be my best self, all the time. i can’t explain to you what your support has meant to me over the years. whether it’s leaving me incredibly kind notes on my fics that make me want to write more just for you, or sending me asks when you know i’m feeling down, or just making me laugh with your hilarious takes, you have always, always been there for me. you’re the toughest person i know and you make me want to keep pushing every day. you’re so incredibly talented; your ideas are just always stunning and inspired and despite being humble about it you’re amazing at everything you do. your art, your writing, your aesthetics, all of it. loeg and share-a-lair were just spectacular and such a show of how complex and original and smart your writing is. barring just your talent you’re also an inspiration in how passionate and kind and dedicated you are. you care for others everywhere you go. you come on here and constantly make me want to be a better person. it’s not just me, either—you’ve taken on the role of helping all of us in any way you can, and you just make us feel loved and supported and give us someone to always look up to. i love you. plain and simple, you’re my family, and i’m so, so grateful to have you in my life.

@juliesdahlias​ you know when you meet someone younger than you and you’re like how do they have this much talent in their body? and you can’t even be mad about it because you just want to root for them and you want good things for them and you think of them like a little sibling? that’s me around you all. the freaking. time. pearl, i’m constantly blown away by how smart and driven and passionate you are. you have so much talent to offer the world and i love seeing you thrive more than anything. you inspire me every freaking day; i mean, your tiara thief drabbles literally made me pull my fic out of my drafts for the first time in months. every time you post it’s something iconic and beautiful, whether its your fics or your edits or your headcanons. and not just that, but you’re so incredibly supportive of everything i put out there. like with ths, the way you latched on to it and are one of our biggest fans and made content for it literally as soon as we started!! that was amazing!! you’re just such an incredible person in every sense of the word; you’re talented and hilarious and kind and passionate and i love you so so much. i cannot wait to watch you do amazing things because i know you’re gonna be one of the greats. ily. 

@ciara-knightly i can’t even put this into words. i’m sitting here trying to say it right and every time i start i just turn into “!!!!!!!!” cause i love you so much. i know i’ve said this before, but shona, you’re honestly like my older sister. this whole year of just, really getting to talk to you beyond tumblr has shown me how honestly kind, passionate, smart, and supportive you are. talking to you is one of my favorite things in the world, whether it’s rambling about tiara thief, or discussing feminism in media, or just getting life advice. you always know what to say to lead me in the right direction and reassure me that things are gonna be okay. i look up to you more than i can tell you; i’m constantly inspired by your talent and your drive. you’re endlessly supportive and you make me laugh all the time, and i hold literally every convo we have close to my chest because it means so much to me to just be able to have them with you. i’ll never be over the fact that you basically discovered jatp, or us talking and making predictions for weeks before it aired, or us plotting out the whole dystopia novel together—which, even though it didn’t really pan out, was such an amazing experience because i got to do it with you. and i absolutely scroll back through our convos on a regular basis to scream over our tiara thief headcanons. everything i’ve done with you has been incredibly fun and meaningful, so what i’m trying to say in this very long winded way is that i’m so, so glad i know you, and i can never thank you enough for everything you’ve done for me.

Carmen Sandiego: Reboot

Sometimes two ideas just connect:

I’d love to watch a police/detective/forensic show about crimes other than murder, so I could admire the intelligence and not have to look at dead people.

Carmen Sandiego is cool.

So. Carmen Sandiego, rebooted as an adult drama. The timing is right, as the kids who watched the show on PBS are now adults. Carmen has a strong and appealing visual presence, and they must keep the theme song. A new version, but the same song.

Carmen is an international thief (of course), targeting the super-wealthy. She speaks tons of languages and is always learning more (”The first 20 languages are the hardest”). She doesn’t always wear the iconic red hat, but she always wears a red hat (snapback, fascinator, fedora, tiara, headband...). In fact, if her laptop runs Redhat Linux, so much the better. She has a gang of replacable mooks for each job, who speak languages other than the native one of where they are, so she can tell them what to do when shit goes south and no one else understands what she’s saying. In fact, they always speak the language of the next country she’s about to hit, so she can practice (and drop a hint for the Good Guys. Although sometimes she’s, say, speaking Mandarin and her next job is in Vancouver’s Chinatown, or French and she’s headed to New Orleans). Her skin colour is medium range so with a little makeup adjustment she can pass as light-skinned black, mediterranean, or tanning-bed caucasian, depending where she is. There are hints through the series of the big final job she’ll do before retiring, so we have something for the series finale.

And opposed to her is a gang of regulars. The agent from Interpol who has access to all the crime databases and police tools, and thinks they’re in charge. The insurance investigator who really is, and when everyone listens to them it pisses off the Interpol agent. (”Listen. I get a percentage of the recovered value. You get a pat on the head. Who’s more motivated?”) The muscle/hacker: a petite, adorable woman who is an Aikido master. She uses being underestimated to her advantage. (The thugs barge in, and all gang up on the biggest male on the team. She clonks them on the back of the head with a pipe.) (And I chose Aikido specifically because there’s virtually no hitting; it’s all about using the other person’s energy, locking joints, and taking their balance. So not only does she take out the mooks, she doesn’t even have to hit them. For a lot of the throws her height is an advantage.) The thief/conman: an older person who’s seen and done it all, and got arrested for it, which is why they’re working with the team instead of for Carmen. They’re the one who advises the team on how to pass in different social situations, and also on their lives and love lives.

Also one of them is a black man just so we can have a scene where he’s tracking Carmen and bursts into a room saying, “I’m looking for a beautiful white woman.”

Since Carmen steals from the super-rich, we’re not terribly disappointed when she succeeds. And since we’re invested in the Interpol/insurance team, we’re happy when she’s defeated...although she does always escape, usually leaving a teasing note. When she can’t, she leaves a message on the team’s voicemail.

Can someone pass this along to Netflix? It’s gotta be better than Iron Fist.

3) mack/brady (teen beach movie) honestly like...these two were so cute together. maybe it’s just that my bi ass is sold for maia mitchell and ross lynch but like...they genuinely cared about each other so much...they pushed each other out of their comfort zones and encouraged each other...even when they were fighting they worked as a strong team...i love them.

4) henry hart/charlotte page-bolton (henry danger) and there are so many reasons but like. best friends to lovers. her pushing him to be better. him making her laugh. the two of them growing up and growing old together. i am! soft!

5) troy bolton/gabriella montez (high school musical) and i don’t need to justify myself because! classic! every number they did together! peak!
