"You don't have to believe to be protected. I believe enough for all of us." Tia Lugo Speaks No Evil by Danette Vigilante was such a joy to read for #PRHeritageMonthTour. It was dripping with Puerto Rican adobo, sazon and sofrito. The representation hit home for me in every way. I wish this book existed when I was in middle grade. Tia's character and story was so relatable to me as a Nuyorican Brooklynite. The aspects that really hit home for me were: 🇵🇷 the culture clash across generations 🇵🇷 the misunderstanding and intolerance of ancestral ways 🇵🇷 the strong love of family 🇵🇷 the power of abuelita's love 🇵🇷 the ways girls are treated differently once they hit puberty 🇵🇷 the way brown kids have to grow up faster than they need to because of certain environments 🇵🇷 the innocence of first loves 🇵🇷 how real life can become horror 🇵🇷 how secrets create trauma 🇵🇷 the importance of safe spaces for kids in NYC neighborhoods 🇵🇷 the strength of tradition and culture I loved that the atmospheric writing really brought this story to life. I was SCARED for real the entire time. The abuelita moments softened the mood throughout. I am absolutely in love with this one forever and I highly recommend you pick this one up and share with your friends and family. If you're looking for a scary, Brooklyn story with lots of boricua spice this one is for you. Tia Lugo Speaks No Evil by Danette Vigilante Publication Date : August 17th 2021 Publisher : Jolly Fish Press Genre : Middle Grade / Mystery Pages : 208 Ratings: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 This was interesting Middle Grade mystery that revolved around Tia witnessing a murder that changed her life and filled with paranoia. The story was about friendship, family, honesty, trust, fear, belief, hope, not letting fear control you, courage, and love. Writing was lucid, fast paced and atmospheric with apprehension and fear character felt. Tia was interesting character. She had asthma and author represented kid with asthma really well. her development was really late in the book. And yet I liked how she realised keeping things in and letting fear rule herself and her life wasn’t going to keep her or her family safe. Tia and her family were Latinx who believed in botanica and all spiritual things. It was important aspect of the story. I liked the message in the book about burden of carrying secret, not letting fear rule you, and strength one need to have courage and face the problem are there within everyone without need of spiritual things. Why 3.4 or 4 stars - I was little disappointed with main character. It was frustrating after certain points in the story. I felt there was too much focus or Tia’s paranoia making the story a little melodramatic. Overall, Tia Lugo Speaks No Evil was unique and enjoyable middle grade mystery with well written cultural aspect. QOTD : Last, current, next read? Last read - The Barrister and the Letter of Marque by Todd M. Johnson - This was well written historical fiction and legal thriller set in post Napoleonic Regency London. There wasn’t big mystery as author didn’t kept tight suspense about who stole the Letter of Marque and who was behind setting Madeleine and her cousin up and destroy their reputation and take away their cargo. It was more about how William was going to defend Madeleine’s cousin and going to get the proof with all disappearing evidences and fight against the King’s Counsel. It was great read and much more complex than I expected. I bet I would have enjoyed it even more if I was well. Current read - Tia Lugo Speaks No Evil by Danette Vigilante - I just started this. It’s pretty fast paced and I’m already curious to know who is the killer and if Tia would get over her fear and confide in to her parents about her witnessing murder before it’s too late.
