Coheed and Cambria primer for L.S. Dunes fans

Travis Stever and Claudio Sanchez are the two core members of Coheed and Cambria and have been since the bands inception in 1999. Coheed primarily makes concept albums based on Claudio's sci-fi comic series The Amory Wars.

The basic plot is that Coheed and Cambria Kilgannon are fighting against aspiring dictator Wilhelm Ryan, who started The Amory Wars with the goal to rule over the solar system Heaven’s Fence. Their son Claudio (we love a self insert) is a seemingly normal kid dragged into the fight, who may turn out to be the prophesied saviour.

"But what do they sound like?" Coheed mixes elements from a lot of genres and are most often described as prog rock. I would personally be more inclined to classify them as power metal or like, prog emo (emo used as a sort of catch all term for various pop influenced rock, metal, punk and hardcore music styles of the 00s). If you like Dunes there's definitely something in their discography you'd enjoy, especially given how similar Claudio and Anthony's vocals are.

You don't need to follow the storyline to enjoy their music though, here's a few of their more radio friendly songs I would recommend a new listener to start with:

Favor House Atlantic - every 00s band has at least one pop punk song

Ten Speed - slightly more prog influence, still pretty pop punk

Welcome Home - it's their most popular song for a reason

Shoulders - newer song, hard rock/metal vibes

Bonus: Jesse's Girl 2 ft Rick Springfield - Claudio wanted to write a sequel to Rick Springfield's 1981 classic Jesse's Girl, so he did.

If we define 'rock bands from the New York Metro area 1999-2002' as a scene, Coheed and Cambria were right there in the trenches with bands like Midtown, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday and My Chemical Romance. They were tour with these guys and most of the other "bandom" bands (The Used, Fall Out Boy, AFI etc.) and were hanging out in the background somewhere for a lot of iconic moments, like Warped 2004 (featured in LOTMS).

In a roundabout way Coheed is actually responsible for giving MCR their first big break. In 2002 they were opening for Jimmy Eat World and had to cancel a show last minute, they were replaced by MCR who had only released Bullets a month prior.

So from what I can tell Travis has known Thursday and MCR since at least 2002 and Anthony since at least 2005 (Coheed/Thrice/Circa Survive tour). More recently Travis played with Thursday for their Signals V2 livestream (2021) and Coheed opened for MCROKC (2022).

I know I missed heaps of stuff but I hope this helps at least one Dunes fan understand Travis a little more! His connections to the band go just as deep as any of his bandmates but are a lot less straightforward.

Thursday Band hosted a holiday live stream at signals V2 on December 29, 2020 featuring Jim Ward, lead singer and rhythm guitarist for Sparta and Bartees Strange. 

Specials guests were Frank iero from My Chemical Romance and Frank iero and the Future Violents, Norman Brannon from New End Original, Travis Stever from Coheed amd Cambria, and Walter Schreifels of Quicksand, Youth of Today, and Gorilla Biscuits fame.

Frank unveiled his new blond locks while shredding the hell out of his guitar during the livestream broadcast.

Will any of our cast have a familiar, or if that's too spoilery, will anyone at the beginning? (Is Zwei one?)

Howdy! And nope, that’s not spoilery in the least.

Currently, there are four familiars in the Redux:

Zwei (Canis familiaris) — Registered to Taiyang Xiao Long.

Nyla (Sus rufistriatus) — In-training under Coco Adel.

Arion (Equus ferus caballus) — Registered to Amber.

Chester (Accipiter gentilis) – Registered to Raya Austringer.

Before I get into each individual familiar, a bit of background on the concept as a whole and how it works in this universe.

A familiar (more prosaically called beasts of burden, although that term has become obscure, and faded out of general use) is any animal that’s used to assist Huntsmen in combat against Grimm. In order for an animal to become registered as one, it must have received specialized training from an accredited licensing institution (Beacon, Haven, Shade, Atlas). Once the animal is familiar-certified, it’s registered under a Huntsman’s license.

A familiar is required by law to have an unlocked Aura, and must demonstrate a certain degree of proficiency in using it (the standards of which vary between species). In addition to overseeing that animal’s care, Huntsmen are legally responsible for any damage or harm their familiar causes to people and property.

Although Zwei is registered as a familiar, it’s more of a technicality than anything. When Tai first looked into getting a dog, he decided to check out a local shelter. Zwei had been surrendered by his former owners when he was a puppy because he accidentally unlocked his Aura. His owners, believing in the stigma that any animal with an unlocked Aura is predisposed to aggression, immediately got rid of him. Tai knew that the odds of Zwei getting adopted were pretty slim (and it was really hard to say no when Yang and Ruby were already rolling around on the kennel floor being licked to death). He decided that it was in Zwei’s best interest to learn how to use his Aura for his own safety, and so he consulted the professor at Beacon Academy who oversees the familiar training program. Six months later, Zwei was certified and registered. However, Tai almost never uses him for missions, unless it’s for something like reconnaissance. It’s mostly just a title for the paperwork. (That being said, he does use Zwei a lot for demonstration purposes at Signal. The students always get excited whenever Professor Xiao Long hosts “Furs-day Thursday.”)

The decision to make Zwei a familiar (as opposed to just a run-of-the-mill pet) was partly done to explain away the combat skills that come out of nowhere in V2.E11 - “No Brakes.” Not only does he attack a White Fang operative, but he destroys an Atlesian Paladin-290 and kills a Beowolf.

And that’s not getting into the fact that Oobleck punts him like a living tee-ball and Zwei is completely unharmed, even though he catches fire.

Now, could I choose to believe that this was just a quirky anime trope that has no bearing whatsoever on the lore? Of course I could.

Am I going to?

Absolutely not.

Chester is the northern goshawk owned by Raya Austringer, one of Beacon Academy’s department heads. She oversees the curriculum for Wilderness Survival, and handles all of the lodging, care, and paperwork for any familiars owned by students and faculty. When doing field work, Raya primarily uses Chester for surveillance, scouting, and hunting. In combat, he’s trained for divebombing and detonation (dropping Dust projectiles from overhead that are primed to release their elemental effects upon making contact with their target). Outside of combat, Chester assists in lectures and training other familiars. Whenever Raya walks the campus grounds, students will usually see her accompanied by her familiar, either gliding overhead or perched on her shoulder.

Arion is the white gelding that we see Amber riding in V3.E7 - “Beginning of the End.” He was bred and raised specifically as a destrier. Amber received Arion not long after she was enrolled in Beacon Academy, around the time that she expressed an interest in training a familiar. Ozpin gave him to her as a gift.

Nyla is a species of pig colloquially known as a war boar, domesticated generations ago from a wild ancestor native to Forever Fall. As an adolescent, war boars are about the size of a Tibetan mastiff; when they reach maturity, they’re large enough to ride. Coco’s had Nyla since she was a shoat, and is currently training her at Beacon Academy. Right now, Nyla isn’t large enough to carry people, so she’s relegated to fighting, tracking, and ferrying supplies. Coco will openly babytalk and spoil her, much to the amusement of her long-suffering teammates.
