OK...i finally decided to make this long overdue post because i just realized that yang lei finished filming his latest drama 太平年 a couple of days ago...and it means that HE CAN FINALLY FOCUS ON THE THREE BODY SPINOFF AND SEASON 2 NOW!!!!!!

to be honest, even though he was directing other shows in 2024, all people cared about was three body. and no matter what the occasion, he'd be asked about how it was going for all the three body projects. he even wore a three body t-shirt to an interview for another show himself lol (screencap below), and of course they talked about three body...

anyways, the interview above happened in june 2024, but since i was very discouraged by the lack of interest back then, i didn't share this (sorry😅!). now that we have some new fans in the fandom asking about the spinoff, i just want to assure everyone that they will definitely let the shiwang ship sail.

what he said in the screencap: i want the continuation of the story between wang miao and shi qiang. so it will show a lot of wang miao and shi qiang, like season 1 of three body, the two of them solving the case together. their relationship...relationship story.

I highlighted "情感" in yellow in the screencap because the direct translation of this word is emotion or feeling. but for the sake of making it sound good in english, i picked "relationship", but you know the story is about their emotions/feelings towards each other. i can't believe yang lei even repeated the word twice. he was either trying to emphasize it, or he wanted to find a less intimate word, but failed🤣. you had no idea how much this shook the shiwang fandom with joy back then.

lastly back to the serious non-shipping stuff. yang lei said in june and then in october last year that liu cixin would consult on the script for the spinoff. it would fill in the gap between the first and second book, and explain some things that were not extensively explained in the novel, for example, why escapism is not allowed.

as of late october, they were still working on the script for the spinoff, and yang lei was in contact with both yu hewei and zhang luyi to get feedback from them as well. the three body fandom used to think yang lei's other drama wouldn't wrap up until march or april, but now that it finished shooting a lot earlier, we are really getting closer and closer to the filming date of the spinoff. yhw is going to get that shi qiang haircut, and zly needs to grow out the miaomiao hair bangs...life is good🥳!

we still don't know when the shooting of season 2 will start, but it really makes sense if they directly go for season 2 after shooting the spinoff. so let's hope that will happen.

lots of people have been saying the exact same thing but honestly netflix's biggest and most frustrating problem is that they really do treat audiences like the biggest of dumbasses. yea we've seen this time and time again but we have two perfect examples rn in the live action atla and 3 body problem. erasing sokka's misogyny and "internationalising" 3 body by?? making everyone british?? perfectly encompass this descent into dumbed-down everything. i get that there would've been people misinterpreting sokka's arc and i get that there would've been people complaining about the chinese names or whatever but by catering to that specific subset of the audience you lose so much nuance and complexity!! but alas, profits.

also one of the major criticisms against the three body problem was the characters being one-dimensional and dull but like. is this better? is shoehorning romantic relationships fucking everywhere better?? what the fuck is up with ye wenjie and mike evans. WHO asked for this. benedict wong as da shi is perfect but why the fuck is his name CLARENCE

a little update on tencent's dashi spinoff show & the dark forest

in an event held on april 13th, director yang lei talked about the dashi spinoff (refer to the link for plot summary if you missed it). one major thing that fans can finally stop worrying about is that zhang luyi will play wang miao for sure. the concern was not unfounded because it's not that uncommon for cdramas to switch actors. and back when the spinoff was first announced last summer, yu hewei was the only actor confirmed officially. but i mean, what's even the point of the spinoff if they don't bring back the original shiwang?! nope, they have no other choice!

yang lei said the idea of the spinoff is to fill the gap between the first and second book. and that's roughly the time between 2007 to 2009. it will continue the realistic style of three-body with added scifi elements. he also said that the hibernation facility would be introduced in the spinoff. i don't know if there'd be the talk about hibernation between shi qiang and wang miao, but i know the two of them will deal with shi qiang's health issues, and it's not going to be easy.

lastly in the info sheet from january, the filming of the spinoff is set in september 2024, but yang lei said that they were not sure yet. it's likely that they'll start the shooting in 2025.

the dark forest

since i've seen people asking about the dark forest season in the tags, i just want to say that it's not going to happen soon. in an interview in february, yang lei said they were still working on the script, and in march, he said the shooting would likely happen in 2025.

given the new info on the spinoff show. ideally, if they shoot the spinoff in early 2025 and the dark forest in the rest of 2025, the spinoff might have a chance to air in 2026 since it only has 12 episodes. and it's definitely going to take much longer for the dark forest to air. but given how big the project is and how difficult the shooting will be, it's all worth the wait.

A LONG RANT .. I seriously need to get this off my chest!!!

I've been two hundred pages in The Dark Forest for about three months now and GOD I'm struggling 😭 Why is it so hastily and poorly written? Why are the characters so shallow? I enjoyed the first book so much (even though sophons were a stretch) and the whole gaming..and the politics..like wtf happened?? How did it become so bad 😭 it's like someone totally disconnected with reality and with no understanding of how people behave wrote this book. I went in expecting even better execution than the Three Body Problem and found a mediocre, stereotypical piece of media instead. Are you trying to tell me that two hundred years later, we are STILL struggling with sexism??

And what's up with Luo's imaginary girlfriend?? 😭😭😭 That's the cringiest shit I've ever read in my whole life! Why TF are ALL women childish, SOFT, innocent and like completely detached from their surroundings ??? Even Da Shi could not save this book, his personality has also changed! When did the writer go from writing Ye Wenjie, an admirably complex character to these one-dimensional crybabies. The characters in this book become really dumb and really smart as befits the plot, THEY are not driving the plot...the plot and pre-determined ending is driving THEM, which is like such lazy writing.. I'm honestly so disappointed. I need some good sf books to clear my mind of this bullshit 💀

HOWEVER!

I'm also terrified because it's made by Benioff & Weiss. Remember the guys who put the Song of Ice and Fire books in a Saw trap? Remember them?

Already the IMDB page for this series is showing half a dozen original characters.

Wang Miao, the protagonist of the Three Body Problem novel, is not listed on the IMDB page.

Da Shi is listed. But he only appears in 3 episodes!!!!! This is concerning.

For comparison, the Chinese Three-Body series is 30 episodes. And Wang Miao is in 30 of them and Da Shi is in 29 of them.

In the Netflix series, the only characters to appear in all 8 episodes are Tatiana, Saamer Usmani, and Jin Cheng. And all three are original Benioff & Weiss characters. So anyway. I'm all for unique adaptations but I do NOT trust the Game of Thrones freaks.
