Diego swallowed thickly as he stared at the door that stood between him and his biological father. Someone he never thought he'd meet, someone he had never wanted to meet up until a week or so again. The lies his mother had fed him unravelling the more she had yelled, telling him that he hadn't wanted neither of them, that he hadn't bothered -- while the box of evidence that suggested otherwise sat between them.
He'd wasted very little time shoving his things in a bag and jumping on the next flight to Huntsville before he could even comprehend what the hell he was doing. What if she had been right? Maybe the man truly didn't want him, and the letters, the cards had been... to save face? He wasn't so sure, but he knew he wouldn't be able to rest if he didn't find out. It didn't take him long to find out where the man lived, given the return address. Diego only hoped the man was still here.
Taking a deep breath, he raised his fist, knocking three times as he rocked back and forth on the balls of his feet. He was rarely nervous, but this situation warranted the nerves that bubbled in the pit of his stomach. As the door opened, Diego took in the sight of the unfamiliar looking man in front of him, teeth tugging on his lower lip. "Uh, hi," He mumbled awkwardly, the reality of this being a really fucking terrible idea sinking in. He should have called, texted or something before showing up unannounced. Clearing his throat, he asked, "Are you Manuel Laferte?"

"No! That's a terrible way to make a first impression!" Diego counters, shaking his head. "Dude, what if he's hot? I'd have immediately ruined all my chances," Diego sighs heavily. "Oh. Uhhh, yeah see, I didn't think I'd get this far so I didn't think of anything." He grinned sheepishly.
"yes!" river says with too much excitement, turning back around to face diego, eyes wide as though that was the best idea he's ever heard. "go do that! what a wonderful way to make a first impression, don't you think?" but diego's nagging causes him to scrunch his nose in frustration, face twisting in exasperation. "okay, alright. what do you want to do?"

"That's fucking stalking. Can you not get a restraining order?" Diego muttered, pulling out his own phone to google it. "Oh if anyone deserves that woman's wrath, it's that asshole." Diego mused, shooting a smile at his friend. "Why did you reply, Eds? Just ignore the idiot. Block him. Yeah that's true, and you absolutely can, but you shouldn't have to fight this battle. He should take a hint."
Eddy stared at the phone longer than she would have liked before flipping it over, trying to push the thoughts that floated around her mind far, far away. "It gets worse, I've changed my number three times now in hopes he'll get the hint, but somehow he always finds a way to get my new number, maybe I ought to just give him Agnes' number but I don't know if anyone deserves her wrath." She couldn't help the soft chuckle that bubbled out of her, trying to bury any other emotion she was feeling with humor. "If only I thought about that before I replied. Of course not, that'd just stress him out and I'd like to think I can fight my own battles."

Press Release:
Organized by Miki Garcia, Executive Director & Chief Curator of Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (MCASB), as well as Guest Curator, Emiliano Valdés, Guatemala from 33,000 km: Contemporary Art, 1960-Present brings together works that have rarely been seen beyond Guatemala, but that speak to a range of formal, political, and social concerns that permeate contemporary art both in Latin America and throughout the globe. This exhibition marks the first ever in-depth commitment to the study of Guatemalan art in the late 20th and early 21st century, bringing innovative and visually arresting works produced by Guatemalan artists to a public audience in the United States and abroad.
With the support of the Getty’s Fall 2017 initiative, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, Guatemala from 33,000 km features artwork in a range of media, tracing the tumultuous route that has traversed the history of Guatemala since 1960. Pursuing the development of art in Guatemala is fundamental not only to understanding today’s production but also in the unveiling of practices and oeuvres that have largely remained underexposed. Political, infrastructural, and economic issues have acted as barriers to the study of art in Guatemala, preventing widespread knowledge of the innovative, perceptive, and aesthetically intriguing artworks that this exhibition compiles.
The exhibition includes over 70 artworks, occupying approx. 8,000 square feet which in Santa Barbara will be installed in 3 venues: MCASB, Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art at Westmont College, and Santa Barbara Community Arts Workshop. It is structured around clusters or groups of works that represent central ideas, themes, and media that have been pivotal in Guatemala’s art over the last 50+ years. Spanning different moments and generations, both the works and the clusters are interconnected and often an artist that is included in one chapter could also be part of another so that the exhibition is not installed by clusters, but orchestrated in a way that highlights the multiple connections that exist between the works and the threads. The exhibition will generate a breadth of concerns that illuminate patterns of development in Guatemalan modern and contemporary art for the past 50 years. The clusters are mainly thematic, although a chapter is dedicated to works that through formal and technical experimentation have contributed to the advancement of artists’ production in the country. The exhibition understands Guatemalan modern and contemporary art as made up–seamlessly–of works that range from a strict Western art-historical narrative to local notions of art (so called naïf or otherwise) as well as artists that stand on the meeting point of these traditions.
The clusters are:
From various points of view, formal approaches, and ideological positions, ART AND POLITICS deals with the way in which artists from different generations have examined the thirty-six-year civil war and its consequences. Through these works emerges the nature of the conflict, as well as the polarization that it has generated in the Guatemalan population, which is reflected in artistic production. Given that the dates of this exhibition coincide with the formal beginning of the war and parallel the development of the artist as a critical observer of political circumstances, it is argued that contemporary Guatemalan art cannot be dissociated from this aspect.
The group under the heading ART HISTORIES acknowledges the existence of multiple art historical narratives and includes works that, in the spirit of Institutional Critique, refer to local or international art, to the history of art, or to the work of other artists as prime matter for creation. This chapter also includes artworks by artists concerned with the lack of access to art education in the country, interested in publications, and inspired by artistic and cultural producers not necessarily recognized within the official art history.
The works included in FORMAL EXPERIMENTATION have contributed to the renewal of technical and formal artistic practice in Guatemala over the last half-century, touching on fields such as geometric abstraction and the use of industrial materials in sculpture as well as the influence of handicrafts on artistic languages. The group recognizes how, despite a strong tendency towards figuration and social art, geometric abstraction has been, from different angles, a determining component of the history of Guatemalan art, insofar as it has allowed for its renewal.
GENDER PERSPECTIVES analyzes how gender and body rights have been expressed in artistic practices in recent years, largely through dialogue with foreign artists and the adaptation of the development of feminist theories to Guatemalan reality. It also discusses the dissident practices that have emerged from what has been more of an empirical conception of gender theory or activism and its social and cultural manifestations.
LAND, LANDSCAPE, AND TERRITORY explores the complex relationship between landscape, land, and territory, from some of the essential issues behind the armed conflict (such as former President Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán’s agrarian reform proposal, and the expropriation of land to the United Fruit Company) to the central role played by the landscape in the construction of the collective imagination and the country-branding of Guatemala. The artworks in this cluster explore the multiple narratives that emerge from the landscape, such as the country’s natural environment, landscape as a source of conflict, and a particular cultural vision of the indigenous population: one that understands indigenous as an element of an exotic landscape and not as a citizen, member of society, and human being in his/her own right.
POPULAR CULTURES brings together works and artists who, from a Western art historical perspective, have paid special attention to popular culture, both indigenous and Ladino. With one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Latin America, textile handicrafts have influenced several generations of artists, directly and as a result of their formal characteristics, use of materials, and wide dissemination as a distinctive cultural seal.
In RACISMS AND IDENTITIES, the artworks address the idea of a possible Guatemalan identity from the perspective of the cultural clash between indigenous groups and the Ladino population (a minority that has historically had social, political, and economic power). This set includes a series of works that deal with the racial division between Guatemalans (ideological and de facto) and racial conflicts in the course of history, as well as the multidirectional racism that follows suit. It also explores a third way of understanding the question of indigenous and Ladino cultures—through the lens of hybridization and postcolonial theories.
Given the profound influence of Maya cosmology, as well as the great diffusion of “imported” religions in Guatemala, such as Catholicism and more recently, Protestantism, the category RELIGION, SPIRITUALITY, AND METAPHYSICS includes works that deepen the presentation of a spiritual aspect and its relationship with a wider cultural scene. This cluster includes a thoughtful and critical review of the effect that different modes of faith and metaphysics have had on the country in permeating the culture and its material and visual production.
The set of artworks in VIOLENCE AND TRAUMA present the responses of artists to the violence that persists in Guatemala as a consequence of the civil war and as the continuation of a broader historical narrative that goes back to the Spanish Conquest, spanning the military governments of the twentieth century, and deriving from the situation of inequality and social instability today. This group of works addresses the role of the State and the socially instigated violence that has impacted life in Guatemala during the last half century, but also represents work that is produced by a lack of State, institutionality, and social policies that have allowed such tragic phenomena to happen in the country, such as the maras (gangs), migration, and the strengthening of drug trafficking.

Diego grinned sheepishly at the other. "Yeah, it's a lot, I know. I don't drink it that often, it's usually a lot more toned down," ish. Not that he needed to clarify that to the other. "Oh no, no I'm fine. I mean, hasn't killed me off yet, so. I'm surprisingly resilient. I'm just running off of four hours sleep and I'm trying to finish these fucking lyrics so my latest client will kindly back the hell off," He admitted. Originally, he'd wanted to have finished the song before he'd come to visit his father, but he'd been stuck in a rut, and well, the decision to come and meet Manu had been a rather impulsive one. "Not that you needed to hear my life story," He muttered, scratching the back of his neck. "Sorry, I tend to ramble a lot, especially if I'm nervous or tired, and I'm kinda both so. Y'know, word vomit."
“What the hell?” was the first thing to come out of Mirza’s mouth. He hadn’t even noticed the scribbling on Diego’s hand. If he had, he would have wanted to run out immediately, but instead, he chalked it up to a bad night. But by God, how expensive could that have been? And he was okay with giving that up? “I’m thinking maybe you should have mine considering the amount of death that little coffee holds.”

A sigh escaped his lips as he sat on the floor of Mickey's living room, back against the wall, staring up at the ceiling as his best friend put her child to sleep. It had been a weird few days, and he wasn't too sure how to feel. "So," He let out a sigh, "I met my dad. Well, Manuel -- My biological father."

Diego huffed in amusement as a familiar song came on the radio of the coffee shop as he waited in line. He often grew tired of hearing songs he'd written on the radio when they played on repeat over and over again, but this one hadn't yet hit that point. A smug grin was present on his lips as he turned to the person behind him. "Y'know, they actually told me that this song wasn't going to be a hit? No matter who sang it?"

"Well what am I supposed to do? Go annoy the roomie of yours I haven't met yet? That'd be a wonderful first meeting, me, half naked, buzzing off of caffeine," Diego rolled his eyes. "Yeah, again, can't sleep, dude. Hence waking you up, now entertain meee."
“because it’s far too early for anyone to be awake, no matter the amount of coffee they consumed.” river grumbles before rolling over and away from diego. it really was too early for his friend’s shenanigans. “you know, i’ve heard that dreams can be pretty entertaining. so why don’t you close your eyes, get under the covers, and dream?”

"Dude, you're the one that let me crash, and watched me consume a ridiculous amount of coffee, why do you expect me to be asleep?" Diego arched an eyebrow, poking the other with his foot again. "I'm bored. Entertain me."
"it's a sunday morning -- why are you waking me up this early and can you please get out?"

"No, she usually shut down any mention of you. Told me she didn't know I was asking about someone that didn't even want me," He admitted, chewing on his lower lip. Eventually, he'd just stopped asking, believing the lies that fell from her lips.
"I mean she wasn't like... the worst, she just..." He paused, unsure on how he much he should actually tell the other. "She was just never the motherly figure most people have, I guess. I mean, she was more invested in the fame than she ever was invested in me." Diego shrugged his shoulders, a hand running through his hair. "I don't know if I can be mad at you, I don't even know your side of the story, I don't even know if anything she told me is true."
"Both, please. I like sugary coffee, I drink a lot of it. Probably too much, honestly, but I have a sweet tooth," Diego half rambled, a smile on his lips. "I've never actually put that in coffee before, honestly." He admitted. "I always used to hate messing things up for them, I'd often try and help them tidy when I was younger," A small laugh escaped his lips. "It'd be nice to get to know you too. I just don't want to force you into anything."
"She truly never showed you a photo? Not even one?" Manu glanced at him in disbelief, trying to wrap his brain around how he was ever with someone like her. But, he was young, had a million other things at the forefront of his mind. He gave a small nod, starting to pour coffees for the two of them, half debating pouring something strong than milk in his.
"I am truly sorry to hear that, and I apologize for not," he began, but paused. Truthfully Manu wasn't sure what he could've done differently, at the time, he was dirt poor and buried deep in bills, but he'd liked to think he'd at least have offered warmth. "You're not, the guilt has always been there, I just never thought it was bad. You have every right to be mad at her, heck you have every right to be mad at me."
"Do you take milk in your coffee? Sugar?" He asked, setting both out on the counter as he started making his own, adding condensed milk. "Some people think it's gross that I add this, but it's what my abuela always did. She'd always let me sneak a sip, so the taste brings good memories," Manu told him truthfully. "Sometimes I have to admit, I do envy that people are able to do that, but I think I'd also feel bad for making a mess a day later." he couldn't help but admit, a half chuckle escaping him. "No, no, you're fine. I wasn't going to be able to sleep more regardless, I want you to stay. It'd be nice to get to know you.."

Diego paused on scrolling through his instagram feed, having posted yet another fairly vague thirst trap, to look up at his friend. "He's still texting you?" He scoffed in disbelief, "Tell him it's fuckyou12345 or even better getyourownfuckingaccount, no spaces, all caps. You told Will he's texting you?"

"I really shouldn't be entertaining these messages at all," Eddy couldn't help but admit as she looked up from her phone, a slightly amused smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. "But I can't help but find some amusement in his attempts at reaching out, even after so many years. Listen to this; 'Hey Eds, why did you change your Netflix password? I still had a few episodes left of Better Call It Saul.' Can you believe him? This is a full grown man that makes way more than I do, mind you."

As the seconds ticked by since he’d knocked, Diego grew increasingly anxious. This was a terrible idea, he should leave. He’d almost turned away, until he heard the soft curse. “Are you okay?” Diego asked, brows knitting together in concern. The smile fading from his lips caused Diego to twist his hands together nervously.
“My— oh,” For some reason, Diego hadn’t expected the other to recognise him. The idea that his mother had been lying seeming more realistic by the second. “Yeah, no she’s fine. She’s probably too busy with Dave or whatever the fuck this one’s called to notice I even left the country,” he admitted, a hint of bitterness seeping in his tone. “I— I honestly don’t know why I’m here,” he spoke, his tone wobbling slightly. “I just— I guess I wanted answers. From you, not whatever… she always told me.”
It was rare for him to have a day off, and even more so for him to have a day off to do nothing. Normally, he'd take advantage of the time and find a way to spend it with May, or go out to enjoy the great outdoors Canada had to offer. He, however was exhausted and in desperate need of a day to himself. He'd just finished off another episode of The Circle and had put on a fresh pot of coffee when he heard the knock at the door. Looking back on the night before, he tried to recall if he'd ordered something off Amazon but couldn't recall if he had.
After a moment of contemplating whether he wanted to answer, he finally caved and set his coffee mug on the counter and headed towards the door. Once at the door, he once again debated whether he'd just let them walk off, but as his knee knocked into his side table and a soft curse slipped out, he knew there was no escaping it now.
Pulling open the door, he put on a brave face, burying the pain as he put on his best smile. The smile however faded instantly when he saw who it was standing on the other side, blinking a couple times ensure it was real. There was no denying it, despite having only seen photos. "I'm him, yes, I-" he began to reply, his words falling short as he tried to figure out what was right. "Is every, - your mom, is she okay?" Even if she had kept him from his son, he didn't wish harm on her.
