hi, are you up for a rec post? I'm looking to read more utopian fiction, skewing toward the recent if possible. I've read le guin's the dispossessed and always coming home, I've read some iain banks with very mixed feelings, read and was middling on a half-built garden, am about to finish everything for everyone and waiting to pick up the faggots and their friends between revolutions. where should I go next?

ty for your patience on this! utopian fiction is tough to write and tough to find, especially well-written (I have issues with AK Press's Black Dawn series for precisely this reason...lots of really great political/cultural speculation and utopian imagining, with some shit-to-mediocre prose.)

that said, a few (e)utopian - that is, works that may imagine 'better' worlds and in so doing imagine different worlds, worlds with new genres of problem even as they presuppose some issues (capitalism etc) have been meaningfully addressed/not existed int he same way) - works I rec:

Becky Chambers's oeuvre. Just, like, all of it. If I were to name a 'next generation Le Guin,' it'd be her, no question.

current obsession(s): i recently finished watching let's plays for the video games Pentiment and In Stars and Time, and both are extremely good

Pentiment in particular inspired me to make a flight rising fandragon for the game, as well as for some other media i like too. ive only completed Pentiment and Dungeon Meshi, but am currently working on fandragon projects on flight rising for Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint and Scavengers Reign

#the first few points about non-migraine headaches are dubious imo. #tension headache can absolutely be chronic and/or disabling esp if occupational

#however it is still true that a LOT of migraine is misdiagnosed as tension headache #another point: if it's affected by weather patterns it's migraine

migraine cheat sheet for folks not sure if they have migraines

A couple cardinal signs for migraines:

pulsating/throbbing

nerve pain-like (tingly, electric, shooting)

aching, especially radiating into the jaw

can be on one side or both sides, in one area or more than one area, or even at the base of the skull, front of forehead, etc

at least one of sound sensitivity, light sensitivity, nausea +/ vomiting, and veritgo (typically- there are subtypes and other headache disorders)

and of course migraine aura (flashing lights, dark spots in vision, etc)

can come in short bursts of 1-30 seconds repeatedly, can last for hours or even weeks, and have different phases with different associated symptoms

Headaches:

don't interfere with work, school, or socializing

mildly annoying

take a lot of effort (weeks of staying up too late, being hungover, etc)

happen infrequently (closer to 1-2 a year)

are not "bad ones" (if you had "regular headaches" and "bad headaches" then it's very likely you have migraines - though personally both headache types turned out to be migraines for me)

happen when you have the flu or another illness as a result and it's clears up by the time you recover from it

do not last 30 min - 72 hours with a clear start, middle, and end phase

don't make you feel wrung out dry afterwards

don't affect you neurologically (fuzzy feeling, slow movements, slurring, feeling exhausted/sleep deprived, feel like you can't rest properly even after taking ibuprofen)

don't respond to sumatriptan or another migraine reliver

you don't dread having a headache

you don't avoid chemicals/harsh scents, chocolate, concerts, or any other migraine triggers

so stella is listening to classical music and she starts laughing and shakes her head ruefully. and with a twinkle in her eye like a rankin/bass character she goes "Khachaturian is so funny". and when i stare at her in utter bafflement she chuckles again and goes "just listen! Isn't this the funniest thing you've ever heard?" and i listen as jaunty classical music continues to play a counterpoint to stella's delighted laughter
