I really hate how ads have taken over the internet. On one hand, I know that hosting a website costs money, right? And ad revenue is one of the simplest ways for free-to-use websites to cover their operating costs.

My question is-- and I would genuinely love an answer-- is this ever going to stop? Tumblr ran for a long time without ads. So did Youtube. I know that the cost of hosting so much media has gone up, but there are a lot of users on these websites that make the content that drives people to use the service that don't see any of the money generated by this revenue. On Youtube, there's at least a way for creators to make some money from what they do. For most, it isn't much, but the opportunity is there. On Tumblr, well... the ability to convert the visibility of my blog into any financial gain practically nonexistent, though they did at one point promise that users would be able to make money from ads run on their blogs (whatever happened to that, Staff?).

I'm not mad at Tumblr for hosting ads. I get that it has to happen because it's the easiest way to keep the site free, and honestly, I imagine Tumblr's staunch opposition to monetization has been a real obstacle for the team building Tumblr. But at the same time, it feels like yet another small concession in the usability of the site. I'm tired of ads that auto-play with blaring audio while I'm scrolling. I'm tired of adds that, if I touch them while trying to scroll past them, take me to an external site. Outside of tumblr, I'm tired of looking for information online only to get a webpage that's 95% ads and otherwise illegible. Hell, I recently got an ad on Discord. Was it unobtrusive? Maybe. But it was there, for the first time, and I know that won't be the end.

I know the first reply I'm going to get on this is "use adblock", and yes, that's a solution, but think about how much the landscape for media has changed in just ten years.

Overall, I think the only weapon types that suffered from this change were shotguns and snipers. with shotguns they aren’t nearly as used as in D1 but recently they added one that has seen a ton of use. with snipers they all kinda suffer from lack of damage and difficulty of use, but all of the exotic snipers are incredibly good. And as for the pvp, a lot of the problems D1 had are almost entirely fixed by D2. And speaking of pvp, there is a problem with how prominent and powerful the exotic pulse rifles are in pvp. Pulse rifles can be countered fairly easily, however, so it isn’t a huge problem, but a problem nonetheless.

The combat feels a lot better with the weapon changes since, to deal with enemy shields now you can switch to your secondary energy weapon to take them down easier, with a weapon that you have better options for. On D1 if you wanted to more easily take down an enemy’s shields you would either have to use a shotgun in sneezing range, snipe them, or use a slow firing fusion rifle. Or, you could use a rocket launcher or a machine gun, but that costs ammo better used on tougher enemies like bosses and such. And you can get a special currency from the lootboxes that allow you to buy things from the rotating selection previously mentioned. The lootboxes also tend to not give you anything you already have so you tend to get new items every time. Due to this system I haven’t really felt pressured to spend money on them and I think that’s pretty good. This system isn’t nearly as toxic and abusive as the system in overwatch, battlefront, counterstrike, and TF2, and for that I am pretty happy with it. I don’t think It is perfect however but I’m not sure how you could make micro-transactions perfect, especially for a game such as destiny.

The lore could have been handled a lot better, they got rid of the grimoire from D1 since the whole “game lore but not in the game” isn’t really a good idea. This is good on paper but in practice it is kind of annoying and tedious since, none of the lore is categorized now and to see it you either have to go to the scannable in the game world, or find the particular gun with the text you are looking for from your bank inventory and hope that you kept it. The best way to have this system is if they just kept the grimoire on their website and the phone app, but also made it accessible through the game. They could still have the scannables since they can be a neat bit of world-building, but they should also either have the scannables unlock lore entries also or just hide collectables throughout the world that hold lore entries, like in D1. I really enjoyed being able to read the grimoire of D1 on my phone in my spare time since my ADHD makes it kinda hard to read books and so the shorter bits of text are way easier for me to digest. 

I like that Bungie is trying to cater to the more casual audience a lot, since I like to play other games and do other things besides playing destiny. I don’t enjoy feeling like I have to play a particular game every week just so I don’t fall so far behind that I get locked out of content by the elitist communities of the internet.

The reward system in D2 is now based around tokens that you can trade in for gear, which I think is just kind of silly. It feels like you are at some arcade earning tickets for an Item that you really don’t need. The rewards are supposed to feel empowering and important, but that isn’t the case when I earn a bunch of tokens that only really allow me to get the same pair of boots that I have no interest in. And the raids are great, and I like the idea of having more, smaller raids instead of fewer, slightly larger ones, but the rewards ar just kinda bad? like, the base raid has its oen set of armor and weapons except for the shotgun, fusion rifle, sniper, and grenade launcher. those weapons were pushed to the raid lairs. the raid lairs also have their own armor sets, but they both share the same set, but with different color patterns on them, and they don’t really go with the lairs. Like, one lair is centered around the vex, a very robotic type of enemy, but the armor is based around the cabal, which are very large and militaristic brutes. The other raid lair is actually based around the cabal though so the armor fits, but it is still the same armor from the vex raid lair so it just doesn’t feel right.

For the most part everything else is pretty much the same between D1 and D2. I mean, they did improve the reward for matching your damage element to the element of their shields, but If I talk about all of the little changes between the games, this post would be way too long and I have to end it somewhere. 

Overall, I really like Destiny 2 and I am excited to see what Bungie has in store for it.

Not too long ago I ran into an incident with some friends while playing a MOBA game called League of Legends. It was my attitude and mental state that caused me to have a horrendous time in the game that day. My normal routine for the past few weeks was to sit down with some online buddies after a long day of work and chill, playing this game together for some enjoyable times. We had a blast and got better at the game in the process.

However, this day that I played, things were different.

I was in great fatigue, lacking much-needed sleep; and my decision-making was well below a level that this game requires to perform well in. Because of this, I started getting frustrated. My anger built and even though I was playing a video game with some friends and playing something I liked doing day-to-day, for some reason I was not having it. I made a pretty big fit over it and sometimes even made rash comments for events that I would never make a big deal over. My mental health that day was not well, and I soon conceded that I would be absolutely unable to do anything for the rest of the time I played.

Except I kept playing, and before I knew it, I was playing the game not because I wanted to, but because I had nothing else to do. At least at the time that was my thought process. It led to me eventually closing out the day deleting my League of Legends account. Except when I researched how to do so, I found out it required a manual ticket request through Riot Games’ Support system.

At this point, I was definitely okay with going through this kind of process to get rid of my account. I made a pretty good argument for why I did not want to play the game anymore (relating to mental issues), and provided all the necessary details. 

I’ve made a grand total of 1 ticket to Riot Games support in the past, and it took about 3 days to get a response. This request took 2, and the response I received was...Not quite what I was expecting.

It’s clear the day I wanted to put in the account deletion request that I was thinking irrationally. I was not letting my better judgement and rational thinking part of my brain (sorry, I’m no Psychology major) affect any of my actions. Because of this, it was a no-brainer on that day to immediately request my account deleted to prevent further self-harm to myself.

But because they wait 25 days before deleting your account, you have time to actually evaluate your decision. Whether this is intentional by Riot Games’ design or not, it is highly effective. Especially when you are losing a potential customer, you want to give them the benefit of the doubt. That maybe they were having a bad day (as I was), perhaps it was doing something harmful to them, or maybe they wanted to get rid of the account to prevent contact with others. 

No matter the reason, I think this approach to account deletion, or more generally, an action that will permanently remove something (especially long term) should always have a revocation process in place. Because humans are very irrational thinkers, at least most are. Humans tend to think by feeling, we are engineered that way! Even those of us that tend to be logical thinkers sometimes lose that side of their personality when it comes down to serious problems.
