đď¸ star-crossed lovers ă č嚸ăŞćäşş ă âŚ
summâŠry Forbidden sparks fly between you and Enhypenâs main dancer upon dorming together, but what happens when your bandmate threatens to expose this reckless romance?
pâŠiring idol!niki x popstar!reader ⊠EPISODE 1
genre band au, fluff, secret romance cw swearing, slightly suggestive, mild bullying, kissing, girl drama, reader is younger than Niki wc 4.5k
"Where were you last night?â Haerin asked with a whisper, removing the tape-seal from her container of apple slices.
It was early in the morning when you, your bandmates, and the Enhypen members got up for breakfast in the Hybe cafeteria.
Getting up early proved to be a challenge, especially considering your late night adventures with Niki and unbreakable inability to sleep in beds that aren't yours.
You couldn't help but wonder how much better you would've slept if Niki stayed next to you-
"W-what are you talking about, Rinnie?" You stuttered unintentionally, taking a sip from the coffee you prayed would help you get through another busy day in Korea.
"Don't play dumb, ____. You know what I saw," she sighed, meeting your nervous eyes, "You really shouldn't be disobeying the curfew rule, not to mention how dangerous sneaking around a foreign country is."
"I appreciate your concern, Haerin, but I promise, you have nothing to worry about," you said with a smile, "I just wanted to get some extra practice time in, that's all."
The sound of approaching footsteps cut your conversation short, the Enhypen boys and your bandmates finally joining you two at the table.
"Ooo, are you guys telling secrets? I wanna hear," Jade cheered, placing her food tray on the table.
Apparently you and Haerin looked a lot more suspicious than intended, but then again, two girls whispering always looked a little fishy.
âHehe, no secrets over here!â Haerin covered, shoving her mouth with apples to avoid anymore questions.
"Riiiight," Jungwon smirked, revealing his soft dimples, "Anyways, howâre you all enjoying the roommate pairs?â
"Iâm actually quite pleased with our group, right boys?â Heeseung joked, exchanged high fives with Jake and Jay to which Sunghoon rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, I'm sure you guys took a while to get used to each other," he mumbled sarcastically, "What do you think about us, Serenity?"
"Hmm," she began in thought, "wellll, Sunoo's kinda vibey. He has a lot of fancy skincare products that he shares sometimes, so thatâs been nice. Sunghoon's also really easy to look at so..."
"Easy to look at, huh? Is that your way of calling me hot?"
"Heyyy, I never said you could use my stuff," Sunoo blurted out, interrupting Sunghoon's attempt at flirting.
"Moving on," Serenity chirped, redirecting the convo, "What about you, Mr. Leadernim?"
Jungwon took a bite of his scrambled eggs before answering, "Honestly, Jade and Haerin remind me of my sister. We get along pretty well and they're not too troublesome, I guess."
"Yeah, Jungwon's pretty cool, too... aside from his tendency to hog the shower," Jade teased back.
âOkay, now what about you two?â Heeseung started, sending Niki a funny look that made him choke on his water.
âAlright, you can answer ____ while he keeps drowning,â Heeseung chuckled, passing Niki a napkin to wipe the water from his now shiny lips.
You still couldn't believe that he actually kissed you WITH THOSE LIPS-
âUhhh,â you began nervously, trying to think of something normal to say, âN-Niki... w-well, he's uh... Niki, he'sââ
âMy GOD, the look on your face right now makes it seem like youâre in love with him or something,â Serenity gawked rudely, dramatically throwing her hands in the air as she successfully got everyoneâs attention with her big mouth.
âI mean,â Niki started with a plain expression, âits not like Iâm entirely against the idea of having a girl fall for me...â
âYeah, happens all the time to guys like us,â Jake winked, immediately cringing at his own words.
Step, step, step, signaled Miss Kimâs signature black booties across the tiled cafeteria floor, âGood morning, my little minions. Now whatâs going on over here with all this chatter?â
Turns out Miss Kim only worked as an activity assistant for Enhypen, though, she always had a way of waltzing into every room like she owned the place.
âNot much,â Jake answered, âWe were just discussing our practice schedule for the day.â
âMhm, so that means the few of you are well updated on your instrument rehearsals this evening, yes?â
âInstrument rehearsals,â Jade repeated yet asked.
âExactly. Jade, Serenity, and Jay will play a guitar riff during one of the stages, so youâll meet in the recording studio at 4pm today.â
âSweet,â Jay smirked, playing air-guitar while mimicking the Karma instrumental.
âAlso,â Miss Kim continued, âI canât really remember, but which of you here is struggling with the choreo?â
Everyoneâs eyes turned to you as you raised your hand shyly.
âOh, ____,â she said, dragging out your name, âperfect! Niki, youâll be skipping vocals today to help ____ catch up in the dance studio.â
You couldnât hold back the smile that grew on your face at her words: maybe some extra dance practice wouldn't be too bad after all.
âAlright, I'm headed to the fashion department to check out your stage costumes. Heeseung and Jungwon, please make sure everyone follows today's schedule accordingly.â
âWe won't let you down, Miss Kim," Jungwon nodded as the stern lady turned on her heel, beelining to the cafeterias coffee counter a few feet away from your table.
"Alright guys, you heard the boss lady. Let's wrap up breakfast and meet in 10," Heeseung said, getting up from his seat first as the rest of you followed shortly after...
To Room 10: Hybe's indoor gym and workout center.
The intense exercise routine left you feeling pretty worn out.
Your mind was mostly focused on getting all your reps in without passing out, ignoring the overflow of sweat that kept seeping from your pores. You all had just finished the last part of the workout: a mile outdoor run around Yongsan Family Park.
"And you're telling me we still have rehearsals after this?" Serenity huffed, taking yet another large gulp from her jug of Gatorade.
"Yes," Sunoo answered plainly, taking the blue drink from her hands and pouring it into a nearby bush.
"Dude, what the hell?" She yelped, backing away to avoid the splashes, "Don't tell me you're still mad about that 'skincare' thing."
"If you had any idea how many added sugars people put in that stuff, you would've poured it out yourself," Sunoo replied in a sassy voice.
"Well if it wasn't obvious, I couldn't care less about whatever you just said," she sighed, sadly watching as the blue liquid trickled past the leaves, soaking the soil, "you totally owe me a drink after this, by the way."
"Hey, that's actually a pretty good idea! We should go out for drinks tomorrow night," Jake cheered, using the back of his hand to catch his sweat, "everybody down for splitting the bill?"
"Yeah, but we can focus on that once we get back up this hill," Jay replied, encouraging the rest of you to keep on treading.
âśď¸ áá||á|á||||áâââââá| ⢠⢠â˘
Later in the rehearsal studio, practice started off a bit slow with a warm up session before actually breaking down the choreography.
Apparently, the official dance composer for the upcoming stage changed a part in the performance for you and your group to follow, adding a trick move with Haerin and Jade.
Meanwhile, the Enhypen boys were working on perfecting their routines, as they had already memorized the whole thing a lot quicker than the Riot Grrlz.
The main practice session lasted close to two hours before the talent supervisor called for a break, sending the other members off so you and Niki could have the studio to yourselves.
Finally.
"So what was that all about earlier?" He asked, kneeling down to stretch his legs.
"In the cafeteria this morning?"
He nodded in response, guiding you to the floor to help you stretch with him.
"Well, Haerin said she saw me last night... Sneaking out, I mean. She didn't say anything about you, but..."
You couldn't help but giggle at the way his face dropped.
"What the? I could've sworn everyone was asleep when we came back last night," he said with an awkward smile, holding onto your wrists as he pulled you toward your feet on the ground, "what'd you tell her then?"
"I told her not to worry about it, but I avoided mentioning too many details," you said, squeezing your eyes at the painful stretch you felt in your hamstrings.
"Welp, all that means is we'll have to be more careful when we sneak out again tonight," he winked, finally letting go of your wrists so you could relax.
"Tonight, huh? I'm surprised I've got you hooked so fast. What's it been, like three days?"
"Four, actually. But I'm surprised by your sudden confidence. You could hardly form a coherent sentence about me, earlier," he teased, offering you his hand to help you up from the ground.
"That had nothing to do with you and everything to do with the way you almost died while drinking water," you returned before dramatically reenacting the way he struggled, pretending to choke on the air, "I was nervous... for your safety, of course."
"Mhm. I'm sure you would've saved me though... Nothing a little mouth to mouth can't fix," he smiled, looking at your lips before looking away, trying to maintain his focus, "You remember how the choreo starts, right?"
"Uhh," you started, scratching the back of your head, "With the little arm-move-thingy?"
"Sure, you could call it that," he chuckled, "Now just follow my moves like we did at the skate park. I'll go slow at first and speed up as you catch on."
"Okay," you said, watching his movements in the mirror as if hypnotized.
It amazed you how even while practicing the moves in slow motion, he still looked effortlessly talented.
"Good!" he encouraged, observing how much you improved with the footwork compared to day one, but there was something about your hip movements that he thought looked a little stiff.
"Okay, hold on," he started, walking up to you and placing his hands at your waist, "Try to be a little more fluid with this step, otherwise it looks kinda awkward."
"Like this?" you asked, keeping his hands in place as you rolled your hips in front of him, trying to follow his instructions.
You didn't even realize how close his body was pressed against yours until a loud slam startled you both.
Niki's gaze immediately darted to the source of the sound, seeing none other than Serenity barging through the studio door, marching in with a cattiest look on her face.
"Ummm, how can I help you, officer?" Niki asked playfully, stepping away from you and crossing his arms.
That's when Sunghoon and Sunoo ran in behind her, trying to catch their breath while spitting out a few words, "We tried to stop her," Sunoo started, "but she wouldn't listen."
"Aha! I knew there was something going on between you two! Don't try to back away now, Niki! I guess you couldn't wait to loosen up each other's buttons again, huh?!" Serenity rambled, making an utter fool of herself.
"We were rehearsing the choreography, genius. Like Miss Kim told us to," You retorted, not being in the mood for her games at the moment.
"Mhm, without leaving room for Jesus, I see! Speaking of Miss Kim, just wait til I tell her about this!"
"What are you two doing here?" Niki asked the two frustrated boys, trying to redirect the conversation.
"We were in Room 10 doing our cooldown when Gossip Girl over here started interrogating Haerin," Sunghoon sighed, "One thing led to another and before we knew it, Serenity was bolting out of the gym like a crazy person."
Your eyes went to meet Serenity's frame, who stood with her hands on her hips and eyes narrowed as she wrestled with whatever angry thoughts ran through her brain.
"Ren, please don't tell Miss Kim. This was obviously a huge misunderstanding," you pleaded with her, trying to be mature about the situation.
"No⌠little kids like you need discipline. Though," she paused, twirling a strand of her chocolate brown hair, "I might consider keeping your little secret if you resign from being captain over the Riot Grrlz."
You scoffed at her offer, "You're delirious. And for the last time, there isnât any secret for you to spoil, anyway."
"Fine,â she grinned, a little too wide, âI tried to be nice about this, Niki, but your girlfriend has left me with no other choice but to come clean about this matter.â
Flipping her hair, she marched towards the door, looking back as if waiting for you all to follow her, which you did, all the way to Miss Kim in the fashion department.
âśď¸ áá||á|á||||áâââââá| ⢠⢠â˘
To no oneâs surprise, Miss Kim wasnât happy to see the five of you crowding her during her shift, especially not when you were given specific instructions to follow the schedule while she was away.
After Serenity expressed that their was âa breach of the rulesâ between you and Niki, Miss Kim summoned all of the Riot Grrlz and Enhypen members for a disciplinary meeting.
"Oddly enough, my disappointment doesn't fall on Jungwon and Heeseung, even though I put you two in charge of everything," the lady began, holding her hands behind her back as she paced around the table you were all sat at.
"Serenity has brought to my knowledge that some of your are struggling to follow the strict rules in place here. Are there any witnesses to this claim?"
Serenity kicked Haerin's leg from under the table, trying to get a word out of her, but she remained silent thankfully. You couldn't help but feel guilty though at the sight of Jungwon and Heeseung hanging their heads in shame.
"Very well then... and are any of the accused parties willing to come clean about the alleged incident?"
Niki peeked at you for a second as if waiting for you to say or not say something first.
"I..." you began timidly, "I did stay out past curfew last night, but only to practice."
This was a partial lie, but you had no intentions on bringing Niki down with you. After all, it's not like he forced you to sneak out with him, as you most definitely wanted to.
Miss Kim's eyes widened slightly at your sudden choice to speak, "Go on," she said, stopping in her tracks.
"And about what Serenity saw in the rehearsal studio... It was nothing. Me and Niki were only trying to practice like you said."
She hummed at your words, "I appreciate your honesty, ____. And Serenity, it would bring me much joy if from now on, you would focus more on working than running after silly rumors."
"Soooo," Jake started, "are we free to go now?"
"Not just yet," Kim answered, clearing her throat before continuing, "From now on, your curfew will be pushed back from 11:00pm to 8:00pm."
A loud groan filled the room at her words, but a satisfied look remained on Serenity's face until the next part of Kim's rules were announced.
"A piece of blue tape will be lined at your bedroom doors, so anyone who tries to leave after 8 will have a tough time hiding it once the tape is torn. Also, expect to be waken up extra early tomorrow for exercise. No breakfast."
"But Miss Kim," Jade began, "Maybe you can give us another chance, there's no proof, anyway."
"Proof or no proof, my rules will stand in place until further notice. And for the record, this is not a punishment."
"Yeah, more like a freaking detention center! I knew it from day one," Serenity whined, the taste of her karma unfortunately falling on the lot of you.
"If that's what you wanna call our home to multinational superstars, so be it," Kim retorted, making her way to the office door, "hopefully there will be no more disruptions for the day."
Slam.
The door was closed, and with that, your busy schedules re-open and waiting to be completed.
"____," Haerin spoke quietly, shyly meeting your eyes as she walked up to you, "I'm really sorry that I brought that up this morning, Serenity must've overheard us talking."
"It's okay, Rinnie. This isn't your fault," you smiled, patting her head gently to cheer her up.
"Mhm, well that's sweet. Thanks for getting us on probation, lovebirds," Jay sighed, getting up from his seat and walking out of the room.
"Yeah, so much for stopping Serenity and her big mouth, you guys," Jake said, giving Sunghoon and Sunoo a look before walking out too.
"Guys, Miss Kim said this wasn't a punishment. Like ____ said, this isn't anyways fault," Jungwon said, trying to convince everyone to see the situation in a more positive light.
"Whatever, I'm gonna join Jay in the instrument room. Don't take too long in here, Ren," Jade sighed, running a frustrated hand through her hair before also leaving.
"Cool, I'm gonna go get lunch because I don't work well when I'm hungry," Heeseung huffed, walking past Niki and towards the door, "I taught you well, brother, but please, stay out of trouble from now on."
Serenity's initial pitiful look returned to the sassy one she wore before, watching as Jungwon, Sunoo, and Sunghoon followed after Heeseung, closing the door behind them.
And then there were three.
"Miss Kim thinks that some silly tape and a bedtime will stop you two, but just know that I'll be watching for myself," Serenity threatened, staring you and Niki down from her seat.
"Got it, officer," Niki teased, walking up to you and taking your hand in his.
"And where do you two think you're going?"
"To complete our schedules? Now we've all had enough with your Nancy Drew act. It's time to put your working face back on," you replied, mirroring her cattiness, "You're gonna be late for your rehearsals with Jade and Jay if you don't hurry up."
"Gosh, you two can be so annoying sometimes," She exclaimed, fixing her hair before marching out of the office, leaving you and Niki alone again.
With your hand still in his, he turned your body to face him, taking your face in his hands and looking at you with the most loving expression.
He just can't get enough of you.
He reached for your wrist, drawing your attention to the bracelet he gave you the other day, "You still trust me, right?"
You couldn't help but look away from his face for a second. If he held that intense eye contact with you for any longer, you're sure you were gonna explode.
"Stop, you're too shy," he giggled, turning your chin to face him one more time before kissing you on the lips, a pink hue raising to his cheeks. You got lost in his touch for a second, hardly remembering that this reckless romance is what got you in this room in the first place.
"Niki!" You yelped, suddenly feeling his hands tickle you under your shirt, "You never answered my question, silly," he chuckled, backing away as you tried fighting him off.
"I trust you, stupid, now stop tickling me before someone catches us," you sighed, trying to catch your breath from all your laughing.
This boy was making your heart do things you're sure it's never done before. Backflips, cartwheels, splits, you name it!
"So does that mean you're still down to hang out with me later tonight," he asked, pouting at you playfully, "unless, you don't think it's worth it."
âśď¸ áá||á|á||||áâââââá| ⢠⢠â˘
Your evening ended on par with Miss Kim's revised schedule, everyone completing their assigned tasks before showering and heading to bed at 8 o'clock sharp. And to your surprise, she wasn't joking about the blue tape thing either.
You and Niki waited til an entire hour had passed before initiating your escape plan, just to make sure that everyone was asleep.
Dressed in the best "incognito" outfits you could find, Niki tied a few bed sheets together to make a rope, tying it to your bunkbed for you to climb out the window with.
He went first because you were too scared.
"Alright, you're coming?" He whispered from the ground, watching you shyly peek from the window.
"You look tiny from up here," you giggled, pointing at him playfully.
"____, stop stalling and get down here," he chuckled back, motioning with his hands as if encouraging you.
Sticking your right leg out the window, you said a small prayer as you gripped onto the makeshift rope, climbing down with your eyes closed to keep yourself from chickening out.
"That's it, there you go!" Niki cheered, clapping for you as you finally made it down... the 10ft wall.
"What if someone sees the rope just hanging here?"
"They won't."
"Well... what if a little raccoon were to get cold out here and sneak into our room for comfort?"
"Come on," he smiled, taking your hand in his as he skipped from the building, adjusting the sunglasses to his "costume."
He wanted to show you around the city of Seoul, taking you to one of his favorite Japanese food stands to get filled taiyaki's because they're his all time favorite. He ended up doing most of the talking while ordering, thanks to the language barrier.
You both wanted chocolate filled, so you ended up just getting one large taiyaki to share.
He tore a piece of the fish pastry's head before putting it in his mouth, careful not to get any chocolate on his face.
You took the snack from his hand before taking a small bite yourself, surprised by the initial crunchiness of the pastry that soon melted into a softer texture, coupled with an equally delightful taste.
Now you see why Niki likes these so much.
"This is crazy, you know that?" You said, taking in the beautiful city scenery that made up your surroundings.
"Of course, especially with everyone reminding me all the time. But what was that you said again? About breaking rules as long as it's worth it?"
Both of you started to walk a little slower, not really paying attention to where you were going, just enjoying each others company, "You're never gonna let me forget I said that, are you?"
"Nope," he smiled, looking into the distance, "because those are the exact words that got us here in the first place."
"And where is "here," exactly?" You challenged, going for another bite of the snack before handing it back to him.
"Alone, outside, past our curfews, holding hands in this beautiful park while dressed up as anonymous wanderers..."
You giggled in between his rambling-
"...Waiting for the right moment to kiss each other again."
A certain feeling of butterflies ran through your stomach at his words.
Was risking your career really worth all this? You'd vote one hundred and ten percent yes.
đ Pop!
The sight of fireworks bursted into the night sky before you two, shattering into a glittery shower of colorful sparkles.
"Oh my God," you jumped in shock at the loud noise, making Niki chuckle at your startled reaction.
"Jeez, you're gonna draw attention to us if you keep jumping like that!"
"Ahh, how was I supposed to know they were going to be fireworks tonight?"
"We're just outside of Yeouido Park. The officials here are probably rehearsing for the upcoming firework show," he said before filling his mouth with yet another bite of taiyaki.
From the looks of it, a few more people started to crowd the area, pulling out their cameras to take pictures of the occasional fireworks that splashed into the clear night sky.
"Maybe we should get going now," you said shyly, adjusting the silly scarf you wore around your neck to keep yourself undetectable.
Confused at first by your initial prompt, Niki took a look around before now seeing a few photographers pointing cameras at everyone.
"Yeahhhh, you're right, let's go before we get caught," he smiled, picking up the pace of his steps as he turned around, beelining back to the Hybe building with his hand still in yours.
The time had just hit somewhere around 10 o'clock, so you and Niki got a good hour to yourselves after your long day of work.
Luckily, his makeshift rope was still hanging outside your dorm room window when yâall got back, and once again, you successfully snuck out together undetected.
Or at least, thatâs what you both thought until the morning cameâŚ
âśď¸ áá||á|á||||áâââââá| ⢠⢠â˘
There was a certain news feed circulating around the web, originating on that same Korean Pop media website you were stalking before your trip.
You werenât surprised to find Serenity with her bright blue eyes practically glued to her phone screen, announcing the blogâs title out loud as you and Niki came down together for warmups in Room 10:
Young Stars Spark Romantic Rumors After Photos of Them Kissing in Yeouido Park Circulate the Web.
Oh no, this canât be good.
Niki had already informed you a few minutes ago about the post popping up on his phone, "There's no way we got caught. I made sure we blended in with the crowd,â he said, not being able to hide the worry growing inside him.
âAnd besides,â you replied while whispering, âwe didnât even kiss.â
But as to be expected, Serenity was having a field day rubbing the news in your faces.
âStarting mess at work again, I see?â Sunoo pointed, rolling his eyes at her words, but she ignored him.
âRen, did you even look at the pictures going around?â Haerin offered as she adjusted her workout clothes, âThose people look nothing like Niki and ____.â
âLet me see,â Jade said, reaching for Serenityâs phone and scrolling past the title to analyze the pictures that revealed two older idols who didnât even match you and Nikiâs heights.
The fear boiling in your stomach suddenly disappeared.
âOh, and their names are right here!â Serenity pointed out before zooming in, âNevermind, I canât even pronounce that.â
âGreat, so that means we can get back to practice now, yeah?â Jungwon said, trying not to sound as annoyed as he truly was.
You and Niki just bust out laughing.
âWhatâs so funny,â Serenity scowled, obviously dissatisfied with the reality of the situation.
"Just the fact that you genuinely thought we'd go against Miss Kim's rules⌠Besides, how would we have even gotten out last night?" Niki tried, kneeling down to tighten his shoelaces, âIâm sure you checked the blue tape by our door. It stayed intact the entire night.â
âMhm,â she hummed, obviously not wanting to engage in the conversation anymore, which you were thankful for.
The fitness coach started explaining the workout to Jake so he could translate for you and your group, outlining that the session would start with some intense weight lifting before cardio, a.k.a, a 2 mile run around the park.
Great.
Heeseung encouraged you all with his bright smile, âAlright, guys, letâs get moving!â
And thatâs exactly what everyone did for the next three hours, keeping a shared goal in mind to follow Miss Kimâs activity schedule perfectly: Day fiveâs schedule outlining an in-person fan meeting that evening.

it has come to my attention that my beloved wife, quinn hughes, has posted a god awful photo dump. so i will be critiquing it. my credentials are that i minored in photography; that my friends always ask me to make their photo dumps; that i'm chronically on instagram & that i have an opinion on everything.
photo 1: solid. he looks good. good start.
photo 2: i see the vision, just not executed well. love the slight stalker pov. but i also thought a picture from inside would've been better, lighting wouldn't be as janky & you could see more christmas decorations (that's what i would've done) but if he insisted on posting this photo, i would've probably thrown it into lightroom rq.
just a lil' cropping & the auto coloring goes a long way!!
photo 3: i like it. no notes. love the slight blurry affect going on
photo 4: & we've lost the plot. he has 4 seperate posts on the nhl25 cover. WE KNOW YOU & YOUR BROTHERS ARE ON THE COVER STOP POSTING ABOUT IT! if he really wanted to post a picture of him & his brothers, post a picture of him & his brothers?? surely my queen ellen made the 3 of them take pictures together over christmas, post one of those??
photo 5: this is so cute wtf. no notes.
photo 6: he looks good in this. i get why he posted it. but i probably would've put this photo in his hockey post from earlier & put the photo of him & garland in this post. but other than that, this is good.
photo 7: again, i probably would've put this in the hockey post. but it's cute. & i probably would've switched 7 & 8, so there's not 2 hockey photos right next to each other
photo 8: wtf is the editing dude. lemme fix it.
much better imo & more vibey.
overall: 6/10

Faith and Freedom
Teaser: âJust give me a minute,â he said, grunting and coughing as he sat up. After a moment, he drew up his knees and rested his forehead there. âFeels like Iâm dying.â
The world beyond the prison walls was cloaked in shadow, with thick cloud cover blocking out the stars, leaving only the yellow gas street lamps to illuminate a city that had mostly gone to sleep. Two frantic figures, a boy and a girlâa thief, a prisoner who had been set free, and his rescuer, who had spent four long year being Baden Hatchettâs wife and who no longer knew what she wasâstumbled through the streets. He did not speak, nor did she; rather, they fled in silence, letting their ceaseless, hurried footfalls break the peace of the autumn midnight. It was not long, however, before the boyâs strength waned, his steps growing unsteady and his breathing more laboured.
The hand that was still clutched in the girlâs went slack.
And the thief fell.
Fear spread through her, so strong it sent numbness to her toes and fingertips, as the boy hit the ground. âNo!â Dropping to her knees, shaking his shoulder as gently and urgently as she could, she breathed, âPlease, please, no, no, no, wake up, wake upââ
He groaned, blinking open eyes that in the gloom appeared a much darker hue than the gold-and-green colour she knew them to be. âWhat?â
She almost collapsed to the cobblestone, too, but not with exhaustion; rather, it was with relief that sheâd been able to rouse him. âYouâŚyou scared me.â
He glanced around, seeming to perceive that he was on the ground and woozy. With a soft groan, he took a deep breath and let his head fall back against the stone. âFuck. JustâŚâ
The girl swallowed. âIâm scared youâreâŚâ She wanted to say, too weak to keep going, but how would he react to those words? If sheâd ever said such a thing to Baden, he would have slapped her hard enough to leave a bruise for a week.
âJust give me a minute,â he said, grunting and coughing as he sat up. After a moment, he drew up his knees and rested his forehead there. âFeels like Iâm dying.â
âYouâre not dying.â He couldnât be; she wouldnât allow it, not after everything sheâd gone through to get him out of that awful prison cell. She glanced around, wishing it werenât so dark. It had been a blessing as they crept from the prison grounds, but now it served only to make the towering houses and unlit storefronts seem dingy and menacing. âWe need to get somewhere safe. Itâs only going to get colder, and you need to eat. And drink. And rest.â
âWhat?â he said, half-heartedly mocking. âCanât I stay at your house?â
She clenched her jaw and refused to take the bait. It was too cold, and she was kneeling in a puddle, and the wind was picking up into a sinister sort of howl, and she was too frightened to chase down whether the teasing was good-natured or not. âIâve got an inn room booked, but we need to make it there.â
The secret note for Alice, hidden in the returned copy of The Scarlet Letterâtucked into the last marked page and written in the tiniest hand she could form: As I am unwell and cannot make the arrangements myself, could you please visit the Whitemoor Inn and book a room for my cousin, Lucy Cooper, for one night? Iâve enclosed enough funds to cover her stay.
One night for a young woman named Lucy Cooper to fleetingly exist, and come morning, she would dissolve into the ether, gone foreverâas would the girl and the boy whoâd occupied her room.
âA room booked?â he repeated, holding his head now. âYouâyou actually got some kind of plan? Seriously?â His eyes were still hazy with pain, but he was alert, and his gaze had gone wide. âYou got money?â
âYes,â she said, âI do.â Sheâd had one chance, one, between Baden letting her out of her room and him taking her to the prison to beg for forgivenessâone fleeting blissful moment when no oneâs eyes had been on her. Sheâd taken as much money as she could from the safe in his study, the one he thought she didnât know about.
That wasnât all, though. In her coat pocket, sewn into the lining, there hid as much jewelry as sheâd dared to take from the box on her dresserâenough to pawn for extra funds, not so much that it would weigh down her clothes or jingle as she walked.
Finally, there was the second half of her entreaty to Alice: if her friend had come through for her and done as she asked, a parcel waited for âLucy Cooperâ at the inn, containing a necklace and a ring, all she could reasonably and surreptitiously fit into Aliceâs book. They would fetch a good price somewhere. Of course, the girl had no way of knowing if Alice had acquiesced, but sheâd picked that friend over the other for a reason. Marguerite would never have gotten involved, but Alice was sensible and kind, and she knewâshe knew. So surely, surely, sheâd made the arrangements.
As long as that was true, and as long as the innkeeper didnât turn them away at the sight of her companion, they would have somewhere warm and safe to sleep for the night.
If only the thief didnât look like he had just stumbled out of a street brawl.
âDo you think you can keep going?â Her voice slipped out high-pitched and breathy. Too many worries, too few answers to soothe them.
He fixed her with a look of pained, miserable resignation. âGonna have to.â
She pressed a hand to his face again. Despite the chill of the night, it was still hot. âIâm scared...â She couldnât finish her thought.
The thief groaned again as he got cautiously to his feetânot pulling away when she held his good arm to steady himâand said, âScared? Donât worry. Iâll protect you.â
For a moment, she didnât even know what to say. Her eyes roamed from his blood-flecked shirt to his black-and-blue skin to the entirely useless arm in Mrs. Bristowâs apron-sling.
They landed on his lips, which were ever so slightly quirked upwards.
âWell, good,â she finally managed. âIfâif we are set upon by an army of kittens, Iâm very glad youâll be here to defend me.â
He choked out a laugh, coughed, and took a few wary steps, letting her cling to his arm; he wobbled slightly, but he stayed upright. âLead the way, princess.â
She was going to have to do something about the name problem.
As they moved through the winding streets, she stuck close to him, partially because she feared he would pass out again, but also because she had never wandered the city at night before, by herself or with anyone else, and the warm presence of his bodyâbeaten and worn-out though it wasâgave her a peculiar sense of security. She knew it was probably false.
Still, she clung to it anyway.
âWhat am I to call you?â she dared to ask after a while. Although she was, indeed, desperate for an answer, she also worried that if she remained too quiet, heâd slip back into unconsciousness. âAm I allowed to know now?â
âDonât get all uppity about that,â he mumbled. âCan you blame me for being suspicious?â
No, she thought, but she didnât say it. She merely pointed the way down a nearby street. Almost there. They had to be almost there. âThatâs not an answer.â
It was a long while, it seemed, of something happening behind his eyes that she could not decipher, some tug-of-war between giving a real answer and not until he at last told her, âI donât have a name.â
Another lie, of course; he had a name, but he didnât trust her with it. What a surprise. Why should he? All she had done was give up her entire life and risk everything to break him out of prison. âPlease.â
He bit his lip and again took a long time to answer. âIâŚI canât.â His gaze flitted around, as if he expected someone to burst out of the dark and streak towards them. As if he feared they were being followed.
Why should her chest feel so tight? He came from a life of crimeâof course he was perpetually suspicious. Surely, he had to be. It had been foolish to hope for he might give a straight answer. âSomething. Anything.â
After a moment, after a third agonizingly long pause, he said, âFox.â
âFox?â
âMmm-hmm.â
A phrase sheâd heard the day Baden found her in his cell drifted back to mind. âFox-thiefâŚâ
He stiffened. Yanked his hand from her grasp. âDonâtâdonât. Donât call me that. Please.â
âAll right,â she said, horrified. âI wonât.â
When silence fell again, she didnât chase it away.
He stumbled once more, dropping to his knees but staying conscious, and when she pulled him up, her tears blurred her vision enough that it obscured the strain in his features and the violent shaking of his limbs.
Finally, when the inn loomed before them, she pointed at its dimly lit door. âThis one.â
âThis one,â he repeated. Voice weaker now, words slightly slurred. He was failing by the second, she realized, perhaps having depleted the frenetic, urgency-fuelled strength that had helped him run once Mrs. Bristow got them beyond the prison gate.
âLet me go in first,â she said. âIâll settle up if I need to and come get you.â That, she supposed, was the best course of action. The innkeeper might not notice her bruisesâbut Fox? A superstitious person might take one glance and conclude that he had risen from the very pits of hell.
âOkay,â he said, bracing his good arm against the wall, and she turned on her heel and hurried inside.
The woman who presumably ran the inn was dozing, and no wonder; it was the middle of the night. Her eyes snapped open, however, at the sound of approaching footsteps.
âMy name is Lucy Cooper,â said the girl whose name was not Lucy Cooper. âOne Mrs. Wright made arrangements for my room a few days ago, I believe?â Too late, she remembered she was wearing trousers. âIâumâplease excuse my appearance. Iâve been...um...Iâve been travelling.â
The woman peered down at a piece of paper in front of her, appearing merely drowsy and rather bored. âJust one night?â
Relieved that the woman either hadnât noticed or did not care what she was wearing, the girl said firmly, âYes. Only one.â Once Baden learned that she was missing, he would search for her, and at some point, he would speak to Alice, and Alice, not knowing what else to do, would lead him here.
He would find neither Breanna Hatchett nor Lucy Cooper in this inn.
Instead, the boy called Fox and the girl who was calledâwell, who was called somethingâwould be long gone.
âYouâre already settled up for the room.â The woman tapped a list of meals and their fees and turned it towards the girl. âYou want to pay for food, too?â
âYes. I would.â The answer rushed out. âWhatever you have now, if you please, and some breakfast, too, before we depart.â
The woman raised her eyebrows and glanced toward the grandfather clock behind her, which displayed an hour not typically associated with taking a meal. âNow?â
âYes,â repeated the girl firmly.
The woman frowned. âWe might have some broth still,â she said. âIt wonât be hot anymore.â
âThatâs all right.â She paused. One more inquiry before she paid. âDid Mrs. Wright leave a parcel for me, by any chance?â
With a sigh, the woman turned away to rummage somewhere behind her. After a few moments, she returned with a wrapped box, slightly crumpled but intact. âThere you are, Miss Cooper.â
âThank you.â The girl took it gratefully, promising silently that she would one day find a way to repay Alice for her kindness.
As the innkeeper took the money and filled out the rest of the paperwork, the girl tried to steady her breath, bracing herself against the new fears that rushed in. Never mind the fact that she was renting a room for herself and a strange, half-clothed, terribly battered man who bore only a false name and who was not her husband. Now she had to contend with bringing him inside without drawing attention. What if the woman took one look at his bloody skin and the tattoo on his arm, and threw them out?
âAll finished up, Miss Cooper.â The woman handed her a key. It lay cold and heavy in her palm.
At first, she couldnât find the man in question at all. It took a few moments to realize he had sat down on the ground, back against the wall, slumped and half-conscious.
âFox,â she whispered, tapping his uninjured shoulder, eliciting a moan. âWake up.â
His eyelids fluttered open. âHmm?â
âWe can go in now.â He groaned, and she tried again to rouse him. âDo you want to sleep out here in the cold?â
âNot really,â he mumbled, letting her help him to his feet. âIâm so fucking tired. EverythingâŚeverything hurts.â
âI know,â she said, her heart cracking open in her chest. âWeâve got our room. Letâs find it.â
In the narrow, lamplit corridor where she located their room, he leaned against the wall, waiting for her to finish struggling with the key in the lock. With his head resting on his good arm, as he breathed heavily from the climb up the stairs, he watched her, or seemed to, although his eyes kept drifting closed.
âBed. Now,â she said, pointing toward it when they made it inside. His exhausted gaze swept the room, obviously counting.
âJust one. Itâs for you,â he mumbled.
âDonât be absurd.â She pulled him toward the lumpy-looking mattress with its yellowed sheets and woollen quilt. âYouâre hurt and sick. Lie down.â
âYou gonna sleep onâŚwhat? The floor?â
He really thought she would be able to sleep? After everything? âNever mind about me. Get yourself in that bed, now, before I throw you into it.â She resisted the urge to clap a hand to her mouth and backtrack as she realized she had practically shouted at him. âUhââ Fox was staring at her with a wide-eyed expression she could not read. âI meanâŚplease.â
He laughed. It was weak and riddled with coughs, but it was genuine, and relief swept over her like a warm wind, becauseâŚ
Because if sheâd ever ordered Baden around like thatâŚand threatened him like thatâŚno matter how empty the threat wasâŚ
âThere should be a meal waiting downstairs,â she said. âIâll go get it. You can rest, but you must at least drink. If you fall asleep, Iâm going to wake you.â
Fox sat heavily on the bed. âYouâre the boss, princess.â
By the door, she paused. Princess. The name was silly, and she got the feeling he wasnât using it to be cruel, but her thoughts on the matter of her name had been boiling over since she gave the innkeeper her false one. The girl closed her eyes, imagining who she would have to be once the light of dawn broke. Someone courageous and clever, someone who faced her fears instead of burying them or running scared. Someone who was bold enough to grasp the life she wanted with both hands.
Hopes and memories flashed in her mind, bringing with them disembodied faces and disjointed picturesâflames, ink, books, blood, and a heavy sunrise filled with promise.
She let her eyes fly open, the answer to the question Who am I? coming to her in a sudden burst.
âYou can keep calling me Bree,â she told him, and he raised his eyebrows. âI decided I like it after all. So thatâsâthatâs my name now. Bree. Bree Scarlett.â
Fox nodded slowly, his eyes on hers, repeating the name to himself, at first under his breath, then a touch louder, as strong as his weak and tattered voice would go. âBree Scarlett. IâŚI like it, too.â
Cheeks suddenly blazing hot enough to be unintentionallyâand newlyâeponymous, Bree Scarlett hurried away, closing the door behind her. As she bounded down the stairs, tempted to take them two at a time like a giddy schoolgirl, she repeated her name to herself, and she found that the very taste of it on her tongue filled her soul with glee.
***
Defying her own prediction, Bree did fall asleep, the sirenâs song of slumber suddenly irresistible the moment she let herself rest, and she awoke curled against the wall, which was where she settled after determining that the roomâs wooden chair was even less comfortable than the floor. She startled awake with a gasp, trapped for a moment in the dizzying space between the waking and sleeping worlds, wondering where on earth she was and how she had gotten there.
She took one look around, and reality came crashing down: she had run away from her husband, set his prison on fire, and sprung a thief from jail.
Bree waited for the panic to set in, for the bone-breaking terror that, at any moment, Baden would burst through the door and tear her to shreds for her betrayal and her crimes.
It did not come.
Instead, she felt strangely calm, detached from the chaos she had wrought in her pursuit of freedom. Her eyes wandered over the room, with its wood-panelled walls, slightly uneven floors, and inarguably paltry sleeping spaces, trailing her gaze over the door and the window that by some miracle remained silent and unassailed by constables pounding and breaking through. It was a veritable marvel, how unafraid she felt.
As she looked around, her inspection paused upon the boy who called himself Fox.
He was still asleep, lying on his side, looking for all the world serene despite the blood still crusting his skin. Her throat tightened, horror creeping through the short-lived peace sheâd just been enjoying as she took in the sorry sight of him again.
How many of those wicked bruises had been dealt by Baden himself?
She forced away the thought. There was little she could do right now about the guilt that stole through her and would not retreat; however, she had a new problem to contend with that she could solve. Fox had fallen asleep so quickly after she brought him water and the innâs lukewarm broth that he hadnât even gone under the wool quilt, and now he shivered in the chill of the night air.
Bree searched for something to keep him warm. Ahâthereâher jacket, abandoned in a crumpled heap near the door.
How furious, she thought, her fatigue doubling as her husband invaded her thoughts again, Baden would be if he could see how carelessly and messily sheâd flung aside her clothes. And how furious he would be if he knew how much she wished she could simply escape the thought of him for even a few minutes.
How furious he would be to see her pausing at the bedside of his foe, gently laying her own clothing over his body and tucking in the sides to keep him warm.
For a moment, it seemed as if her mission to blanket Foxâs shivering form without waking him had been a success, but as she turned away, his fingers curled around her wrist, the unexpected touch sending a jolt through every limb.
âWhy?â His voice was rough, thick with sleep and whatever sickness ailed him. But the word was intelligible.
âYouâre cold,â she said. âI could see you shivering.â
âNo.â When she turned slowly back to him, his eyes were open. Bleary, yes, but he knew her. And he remembered what she had done for him. âWhy. Are you. Doing this. Hel⌠Helping me?â
Good god, what was she supposed to say to that? What explanation was there?
âBecause,â she said, failing to banish from her mind the image of him chained and on his knees, horrified at the sight of her for fear that it would bring him more agonizing pain, âyou didnât deserve what he did to you.â
He watched her, still shivering. âIâŚam. You know.â
âYou are, what?â
âA criminal. A thief. In. InâŚIA.â
The cough that had been so quiet while he slept returned. Bree bit her lip, wondering what to say to quell his anxieties and allow him to rest. âSleep more,â she said, deciding to ignore what he had mumbledâwhat heâd told her like she didnât already know. âIâll be here.â
âBree.â He winced, overtaken by some phantom pain whose source she could not discern. âBree. DonâtâŚâ
He didnât finish, and for a moment she thought he had fallen asleep mid-sentence. But his eyes were still on her when she looked back down. âI wonât leave.â
âNo.â He closed his eyes. âDonât fuck me over. Please.â
Even now, he feared she would betray him. Bree blinked back tears.
âYou wonât, right?â
âI promise I wonât,â she whispered. Gently, she tried to pull her arm away, yet his fingers didnât let go.
âThank you,â he mumbled. So quiet, so indistinct, it was difficult to make out. âFor saving me.â
Unable to bring herself to speak, and uncertainly unable to give the reply that came to mind, Bree swiped at her face with her free hand, her treacherous tears spilling over despite her efforts to hold them back.
She did not move until his fingers loosened and fell awayâuntil the boy called Fox was asleep once more, perfectly still save for the rise and fall of his bruised, battered chest.

BTS - You Never Walk Alone
happy new year and welcome to the first of all firsts! my middle school best friend introduced me to bts and that spiraled into getting hooked on kpop overall. but before branching out to explore other groups, i was invested in following bts, and this album is where it all began.
in future posts when discussing repackage albums, i will only cover new songs, but since this is my first one, i'll make it special and discuss every song on it.
I didn't make a spotify account until after I got a smartphone for christmas in 2018, so honestly i have no idea how i listened to these albums back then,, i remember making a playlist of those color coded lyric videos that i would listen to on my ipad mini, so maybe i was just being hopeful there was one of those for every song on the album and that i was listening to them in order.
anyway lets get on with my thoughts on each song from the album! there will probably be a lot of anecdotes about times i listened to them well after the release, which is a nice thing im able to do by posting this way :)
Intro: Boy Meets Evil i don't remember what solidified hobi as my bias, but i wouldn't be surprised if this song was part of the reason. great intro to the album and he slays the dance so much!!
Blood Sweat & Tears ough such a good song omg!! theres something so special and intriguing to me about mvs themed around art, just feels so elite and fancy,, i hope they do something like this again when they're back from hiatus <3 i remember yoonmin stans going crazy over that one scene in the video lmao, glad the insane shipping phenomenon has kinda died down tho (or i just became oblivious to it lol). ngl the ending where jins face started cracking freaked me out a little back in the day. but fr that bridge is transcendant omg
Begin tbh i dont have much to say about this one, jungkook is great at singing :)
Lie everyone and their mothers were obsessed with this song,, that one dance performance with the blindfold was so iconic!! love jimin <3
Stigma i just remembered there was insane lore going on that i really couldn't follow at all lmao. this one was about an abusive parent iirc? really vibey emotional song tho
First Love i remember my undiagnosed autistic ass reading a post about how emotional this song was and hiding in a dark closet to listen to this song and force myself to feel something. i get it fr now but back then i didnt understand my brain and was taking it too literally lol. yoongi put so much heart into this song and its beautiful
Reflection dang why are so many of the solos so deep and emotional :,) i wonder if "I wish I could love myself" is part of what nudged them towards making the love yourself albums
MAMA more hobi time lets goooo! vibey :)
Awake every time i hear this song i remember the time yoongi did a cover of it and that makes it very hard to take it seriously đ jin is such a lovely singer
Lost love this song so much!! its so underrated, i never hear anyone talking about it :(
BTS Cypher 4 iirc they promised taehyung he could be in cypher 5 and then just never did another cypher lmao đ anyway might be my favorite cypher but that also could be bias from listening to this album more often than the previous ones. wait i just realized they're singing "i love myself" right after namjoon was saying "i wish i could love myself,," accelerated character development ig
Am I Wrong this and 21st century girl were the first 2 bts songs i listened to (i forget the order i heard them in) my friend recommended them because theres a lot of english in them so it'd be a good entry point, so i have a special attachment to them :3
21st Century Girl ditto to the previous song comment lol
2! 3! fan song <3 also i should note i have been sining along to pretty much song on the album as i've been relistening to write this :)
Spring Day THE QUEEN!!!!!!! i am so mad the stage line distribution isn't the official one cuz hobi sounds amazing singing the intro in it đ at least he gets the pretty background harmonies in the choruses <3 i remember still getting jungkook and taehyung mixed up in the mv smh my head. very recent anecdote about this song: (TW: BUGS!!) it came on as i was getting out of the shower and i was passionately singing along and suddenly saw a centipede and FREAKED OUT. i literally went like: âëę˝ě´ ë¨ě´ě ¸ě ë 쥰ę¸ěŠ ëŠě´ě ¸ě~ WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!?!?â quickly googled and found it was harmless but it still startled me lmao đ
Not Today HYPE!!! man idk what else to say really, its such a good fun song
Outro: Wings WAHOOOOOOOO this was like my favorite hype song of all time!! I used to have a silly video of me dancing to it but unfortunately i think it's lost to the void đ i never really listen to the interlude version cuz i miss the extended parts too much. i would listen to this on loop so much and could pretty much sing the whole thing. nowadays i don't go crazy bonkers obsessed over it anymore but i still really enjoy it and never got tired of it :)
A Supplementary Story: You Never Walk Alone nice vibes to close off the album :3
Hope you enjoyed my first post and expect more to come! the next few will be more bts but i will branch out to other groups soon :)
once again happy new year and hope your 2025 is off to a good start!

Funguary day 7! Trying to very carefully manage my motivation/energy tonight so I went with a simpler, abstract vibey thing for today. On the bright side, this is the furthest Iâve ever gotten in any daily challenge! Maybe itâs a bit sad that thatâs only 7 days, but I am pointedly choosing to ignore that. I want to celebrate that instead! Itâs indicative of a lot of personal growth for me. Which is especially nice because I feel kind of like shit! So itâs just really cool to have like, physical evidence that even at my low points now, Iâm doing better than I was even just a year ago.
Pennicilium
I was originally gonna do some creature today, but as soon as I opened the canvas I was like âno, actuallyâ and immediately cut it from my normal size down to a little 500x500 square lol. I thought it would be fun to do something a little psychedelic, and once I made that choice I put on the Glass Animals cover of Crazy by Gnarls Barkley and just had a great time vibin out drawing mostly mindless circles.
This piece reminds me of when I used to draw random patterns on sticky notes and make paper cranes with them. I kinda miss that. Doing repetitive, mindless things with my hands is really soothing and fun to me, and both drawing those patterns and then folding up the cranes falls into that!

Aotearoa Music Month
It's almost the end of NZ Music Month, here are my personal favourite Aotearoa artists and a few song recommendations :)
(If you listen to one song from the list make it Old Peel)
Aldous Harding. Words cannot explain the sheer bonkersness of Aldous Harding. One of her earliest songs shares the name but seemingly little else with Titus Groan, the gothic-fantasy novel by Mervyn Peake, and the music video for 'Lawn' features her in a prosthetic lizard tail. Performing live, she often stares straight ahead as though she is not quite sure why you're all looking at her. Her songs, sometimes joyous (The Barrel, Fever, Lawn), and sometimes yearning (Pilot, Party) sometimes just bored (Ennui), are all unmistakably her. Her last few albums have been produced by PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish, and her band includes multi-instrumentalist H. Hawkline (Cate Le Bon collaborator). 2022's Warm Chris was my favourite album of the year, I listened to it almost everyday for two months, the standout line (from 'Fever' being 'the weather/opened up like a birthday card' which is just beautiful. Her best song, though, I think is 'Old Peel', a 2021 single in which the percussion is Harding banging on a coffee mug with a stick. And she does this live as well.
2. The Beths. The Beths are one of those wonderful indie bands whose music all sounds so cheerful but the songs are all about the crushing weight of your insecurities. They've released 3 studios albums and an EP, but I reckon their debut, Future Me Hates Me, is their best one - standout tracks are the title track, 'Happy Unhappy' and 'Uptown Girl'. Their sounds is a mix of contemporary indie pop (lots of chirpy backup vocals) and classic indie rock dirt, especially on 'Future Me Hates Me', though their new stuff is pretty heavy live. They also use a lot of the old NZ made amps and gear that was made here in the 60s and 70s when it was too expensive to import stuff( ask any adult who was in a band here when they were younger and they'll probably have one). 'I Want to Listen' from last years' 'Expert In A Dying Field' is really lovely, if you aren't in the mood for songs about not knowing if you're lovable cos they've got a fair few of those.
3. Voom. Voom are probably on the lesser known side, but their 2006 album 'Hello, Are You There' is right up there with Grandaddy and Built to Spill. It's one of those albums with like 17 songs but some of them are less than a minute long. Beautiful indie rock, full of classic stuff like 'Jimmy's Got A Boner' 'My Friend Satan' and 'I'm Leaving Forever'. The best song on the album is 'B Your Boy', which I could listen to for a very long time, and we're going to cover it in my band and I'm so excited. It's just a perfect song.
Those are my top three (at the moment) honourable mentions are -
Reb Fountain - I saw her live. It was scary. I loved it.
Marlon Williams - last year he invented a genre, MÄori disco pop, wrote the most danceable song of the year (My Boy), and played bongos on 'Come To Me' (BjĂśrk cover) live.
Vera Ellen - Some nice pissed off indie rock. 'I Want 2 B Boy' is very cool.
Pickle Darling - very vibey bedroom pop, lots of delightful little tunes. Also they work at a record store in my hometown and is always really friendly when I'm in there :)
Tiny Ruins - I'm not the most familiar with their stuff but one of my friends tells me to listen to them all the time so they must be good. Indie folk.
The Clean - Dunedin sound band, not super familiar with them but they have a song called 'Point That Thing Somewhere Else' which sounds like Sonic Youth but somehow even cooler.
Dimmer - 'I Believe You Are A Star' sort of like Portishead, by ex-Straightjacket Fits musician Shanye Carter. loudest show I've ever been to.
This one song called 'Gaskrankinstation' by the Headless Chickens, it's hella dark but pretty damn cool. post-punk.
Special Mention to Flying Nun Records, the actual coolest record label.

literally was chatting w/my bestie the other day and we both said hold on miss amy just dropped a new tease and I just had to tell you lol
Ooooh~
You just made me blush~
Well, all of you silly purpley menagerists make me blush all the freaking time especially whoever keeps sending tap teases~!!
But this one hit me in a special extra flattery way ~
You know what you and your bestie get for flattering me?~
A hearty thank you~~
And also ...heart shaped costumes to wear~ because I heart you ~ ooh yes I doooo ~ and that's why my soft heart outfits are springing forth to capture your tickly bodies just as my stripping machine finishes plucking away your phones and teasingly tugging off your tops and bottoms and shoes and socks, tossing your discarded clothes away and chasing your now-naked forms with wiggly cool tickly tendrils riiiight into these big oversized hearts as they open and await your arrival~
Look at the inside of them as you are chased and tickled and prodded forward ~ sooo fuzzy and lined with soft exquisite material to cover your bodies~ in you go now, chop chop ~ there's tickles to be had and cute ticklish bodies to tease ~ the heart springs shut, sealing you inside and putting that furry soft deep red lining all over you, along the backs of your legs ~ along your thighs ~ soo much plush material on your royal areas ~ along your ribs and up your spine, perfectly curved into your underarms and along each arm tooo~
Awwe, your hands get to stick out each side and your feet below too ~ how delightful that I get to watch your fingers wiggle and toes curl as you try to move around in such silly tickly costumes ~ maybe you can hold hands as you stand before me in my tickle outfit ~ oh yes, your tickle heart mama is adorned in such a belly and thigh exposing outfit with my cropped sweater and little skirt ~ and your hands are free aren't they? You could just work together and tickle me right now. But I suppose that might be hard ~ every time you move, every breath you take is inviting that fuzzy lining inside to caress and tease at your sensitive skin ~
Oh yes, take a step forward together, see how that works out for your ticklish thighs and belly when your movement puts you right into a bed of soft teasing sensation. It's so adorable to watch you struggle in your cute costumes ~ in fact, maybe I'll do up your makeup while you struggle ~ let's blush those cheeks shall we? Now, now, don't fidget I'm just gonna make you as cute as your hearts. You flattered me, dolling you up is the least I can do ~ and oooh, yes your necks are exposed too aren't they? All that fuzzy material is right below and I can use my brush to dust under your chin and along your jaw and up to your ears and down and up your nose and along each temple with tickly touches and thennnn~ why yes, I'm going to tickle your hands too~ struggle all you like, the hearts will keep you nice and snug~
And this? Why this is my remote for the little buzzies inside those hearts. So like, I felt like doing a little âMy MCSM Choices and Headcanonsâ post, just as a like basis for my personal canon on MCSM while also additional letting people who read my blog know what to expect from me in terms of this silly block game.
I will place my choices in âread moreâ so those that donât wanna donât gotta.
Jesse Type:
Red-Suspender Jesse.
Heâs just my favourite little guy. He just seems different. Like honestly, compared to Green-Suspender Jesse (who Iâve found people view as a gruff and bulky short-stack that has the most adorable puppy eyes, and I love it), I like to view Red-Suspender Jesse as this short skinny dainty looking thing that is somehow the scar-covered hero that saved the world. Anyone who is directly looking for him is like âOh youâre the famous Jesse? I thought youâd be tougher lookingâ, and then they immediately meet their fate on the floor in the Family Guy dead pose. But of course, Green-Suspender Jesse is my second choice.
Jesse Personality:
Chaotic Neutral or True Neutral
Some days heâs a sweetheart, other days heâs a little shit. There is no telling what this manâs personality could be at any given moment. There is no pattern. But heâs naturally cheeky so who knows.
Also heâs one of those people that doesnât process his emotions too well. So for my Jesse, heâs naturally sad at heart, which results in him finding it difficult to cope with extra sadness too well, but also having a constant longing feeling for happiness or moments of pure bliss. He finds that the best way to fill that void is helping people or being in the act of helping people. If left doing nothing for too long, he gets very unstable.
He also feeds off of other peopleâs happiness and joy, especially his friends. Heâs his happiest around people he loves. If left totally alone, he canât cope.
Prefered Armours:
Shield of Infinity
I adore Shield of Infinity! Thereâs just something about it that just makes my brain happy. It have this really regal/majestic vibe to it (which is also mentioned in game), and it looks to incorporate emeralds into its patterns. Not only that but spikes on the shoulders! Also its Lapis Blue in colour.
Tooth Chipper
I just really like how simple this one is. While the Underneathâs armours donât get much love, I would just like to say I love this one. It doesnât feel too cluttered compared to the other armours on offer.
Favourite New Order Member:
Olivia
I just canât describe it, but I LOVE Olivia. Sheâs just that vibey bestie thatâs not afriad to tell you youâre an idiot in the most serious or sarcastic tone ever. Sheâs also like that friend that is more like a sister and will annoy the hell out of you if given the chance.
I will say though, Jesse is normally my favourite NOOTS member, but he can be shoved to the side for favouritism punishment.
Favourite Old Order Member:
Ellegaard
Omg the redstoners are my favourites, what a surprise! But seriously though, for me Ellie is just really neat. She has that âI donât like peopleâ charm to her. Like, sheâs very awkward in conversation and seems like she doesnât realise what sheâs saying until long after sheâs spoken. Sheâs quirky, like me-
Ivor was also shunted to the side because of favouritism punishment. He can be a family in the corner with Jesse.
Favourite Side Character:
Gill
Why do I like Gill? Fuck you, thatâs why. Heâs just so goofy and huggable and âI donât know wtf iâm doingâ coded. He lives in my head rent free. He just wants to vibe but Aiden wouldnât let him.
Also I project a lot of personality and ideas onto Gill, and I specialise in pairing him with Jesse in the most dumbass situations where Jesse progressively loses more braincells the more time he spends with Gill. I just love them <3
Favourite Villain:
Cassie Rose
I prefer Cassie overall. Sheâs mysterious, and sheâs lashing out because of cruelty done to her in her shrouded past. You donât know why sheâs angry or why she resorted to murder, but you know enough to understand why she wouldnât simply reach out for help. Also sheâs a cat person, and I simply cat pass up a cat-person coded character.
Favourite S2 Character:
Jack
Personally I donât like the Season 2 characters, with the majority of them just completely escaping from my memory until someone mentions their name. However, I do have my preferences in Jack, Nurm and Radar; the Beacon Town bois.
Jack was the one I got attached to the most, with Nurm followed very close behind. He radiates âcool uncleâ energy that makes me smile every time, especially when heâs showing off or bragging. Even if people find his bragging habit annoying, I personally love it because itâs just a simple touch of world building and fun interaction. Heâs just fun.
Leave or Stay:
Stayed in Beacon Town
This choice is basically âBe Gay or Do Crimeâ and I chose to be gay, just not gay for Lukas.
On a reasonable note, I honestly think the reason Jesse would have stayed in Beacon Town would be from a guilty conscience. He feels heâs to blame for the destruction and disruption of both Beacon Town and Champion City, and that everything that happened is all his fault because he was the one that first lured the Admin in, even if accidentally. He wants to fix his mistakes, not abandon them.
We are now entering more-so Headcanon territory
Ships:
Jesse x Gill
Itâs a stupid ship, but its my stupid ship. I will love them till the end of time.
Lukas x Olivia
They have such nice chemistry, and also theyâre both nerds that just click for me.
Ivor x Harper
We all know why.
Jack x Nurm
They are husbands, your honour.
Jesse x Cassie
This isnât a very prominent ship of mine, and often takes a more friendship-like approach anyway. This is honestly just here because of AU reasons, as for some reason if I have an AU where Jesse and Gill donât interact (either at all or really late) then Cassie is automatically Jesseâs best friend. This is the case for Lapis Swap and Ender Child.
Despite this, this ship is either âTheyâre best friendsâ or âThey are specifically romantically insterestedâ, which is why Iâm listing it as a ship. There is only one of my AUs thatâs somewhere in the middle, but other than that itâs between those two options. Although I will say, there are only a total of four AUs of mine that have Jesse and Cassie interact like this.
Other than that, I still think its funny if regular canon Jesse had an âOh sheâs cuteâ moment when first meeting Cassie. Basically Cassie was Jesseâs âOmg Iâm not just gayâ awakening but he wonât dare to admit it.
Jesse x Lukas
I donât generally ship this one, but itâs the ship that I love reading about and viewing art for. I just love the fanfictions and art pieces I find, with pretty much everything being some of the best works Iâve encountered for any fandom. Its the ship that I just follow the fandom for, but I still have a great appreciation for.
Canon Event:
Iâve never watched Spiderverse so Iâm just guessing if Iâm using the term right.
In my canon of MCSM, the canon event is Jesseâs childhood home being destroyed when he was a child. Yes yes, Iâm going for the âJesse is an orphanâ trope, but its fine. This event is what pushes forward a lot of my canon and also AU stories, and is altered accordingly when needed.
So info about this day; Jesseâs home is attacked by griefers when he was age 6, resulting in him fleeing from home (and dadâs death). However on this particular day there were multiple presences in the area; Sammy, Jack & Vos, who were coming to visit the family as Sammy was Jesseâs biological aunt; Ellegaard, who was heading back to Redstonia with a crew of miners who had come back from a mining expedition; and Ivor, who was travelling to collect materials to take back to his lab. Out of everyone to encounter, Jesse encounters Ivor, who then fended off any pursuing griefers to protect the child. He then takes him to the nearest town to ensure Jesse was a bit safer.
This event can be altered in many ways to suit my AU differences, like encountering Sammyâs group, or encountering Ellegaard, or simply Ivor taking care of Jesse himself. I have even changed the time that the event takes place, or removed it all together. Honestly, if I make an AU revolving around Jesse, this is the spot that I look at beforehand.
AUs (listed):
Lapis Swap AU
Ender Child AU (Son of Soren AU)
Engineer Jesse AU (Son of Ellegaard AU)
Alchemist Jesse AU (Son of Ivor AU)
Jackâs Nephew AU
Secret Elytrians AU
Origins AU
Early Daughter AU
âIt Never Happenedâ AU
Permanent Champion AU
Admin Order AU
If there are any AUs that may intrigue you, feel free to ask. Iâm always happy to chat about them and answer questions.
Little Side Idea I Wanna Share:
Iâm giving Jesse a parrot.
Yes, I know Lluna exists, but sheâs still technically Stellaâs pet. And also yes, Jesse may not be able to fully get over Reuben, but sometimes getting another pet is the best way to move on.
Also the main reason Iâm giving Jesse a parrot is due to my post-canon events. Long story short, the Order is severely injured but Jesse has it worse and is permanently out of commission. The rest of the Order healed to a reasonable health before Jesse could, so they could head back to their respective towns. Although, a couple of days before they do, Jack and Jesse find a young parrot fresh out of the nest without any feathers except one single lapis-blue tail feather. Jack recommends (forces) Jesse to take care of the bird while he was recovering, as Jack could definitely see that Jesseâs mental state wasnât too good, but also the parrotâs lack of feathers was due to parrot depression too. While reluctant at first, after the first night he started connecting with the parrot almost immediately as the two found their similarities really quick, and helped each other into healing (physically & mentally).
Basically my whole purpose for the parrot is for the analogy and comparision for healing. Jesse is devasted that he canât do what he loves anymore because of his injuries, so there would be every chance that he would spiral downwards, so give him the one thing he needs to prevent that from happening; company. The others, despite their efforts, are always going to have to leave, so Jesse needs someone who wonât leave. Not only that, but Jesse is someone who just feels the need to help people, to help others. So in my theory, you give him someone who wonât need his side but also someone who needs his help too. So I gave him a parrot friend.
Also the parrotâs name is Lazuli, because she has lapis blue feathers. She was named that because of the singular tail feather she had initially though before she healed.
She also acts as a messager around Beacon Town, because why the hell not.
Hope this opens up a but about my personal canon of Minecraft Story Mode. Iâm quite happy with what information Iâve given about my brain, but if you have questions, donât be afraid to ask.
Have a good day!

yay tuesday is back
return of tuesday! i had two weeks in the UK which was very fun but i am definitely vacationed out - i miss my routine. longer trips like that are only fun towards the end if you have a home base that isn't just a hotel room.
listening: newest coral bones ep is very chill. it's only three songs and they're all very vibey but i think my favorite is 'seatac'. i wish they were still posting on bandcamp. alas.
SeaTac - Coral Bones
also got back into listening to the altogether - their album 'when we were kids' is very travel-coded to me for some reason, it was on loop my entire train ride from london up to edinburgh. (i'm also pretty sure brian david gilbert of all people is featured on this album haha)
Billy & Anne - The Altogether
finally, i saw st. vincent live in london this past weekend!!! it was a really good concert, lots of fun, interesting venue. she's definitely got an insane stage presence. the opening act (heartworms) was fun too, my brother and his friend weren't interested and described it as 'moody goth bullshit' and i was like well. that is right up my alley. you boys enjoy the bar im gonna go be moody and goth. it was good!
i think if i do standing room tickets again i need to invest in some platform shoes, at least two or three inches, because some of that was a struggle to see Anything ... i did manage to find a spot where i had a decent little corridor between heads to see the stage, however i was directly behind a guy in a bowler (?? fedora?? idfk) hat and his boyfriend who kept moving around and dancing (fine) and gyrating (also fine ?? i do not consider st. vincent particularly gyrate-able music but what do i know) so i also had to do some leaning side-to-side to see around them. one of her songs has a line about jumping off the london bridge and the way they both looked at each other and pointed gleefully at themselves while going "meeee" was very funny. i bet they're on tumblr, they had the vibes. hello gay guys at the london st. vincent concert, if you're reading this.
reading: i read 'when the angels left the old country' by sacha lamb in the two days that i was alone in edinburgh before my brother came! it was good, speedy read, i enjoyed the characters and overall conceit well enough. probably not on the to-buy list, i'd just rented an ebook for my trip.
some miscellanous articles from my pocket emails:
How to Coexist With a Belligerent Catbird by Caitlin Gibson (<3)
The Last Kid in Ninth Grade Without an iPhone by Liz Kreiger (this was relatable as a kid whose parents did Not let her get anything more complex than a flipphone for emergencies until i got myself one as a senior in high school and i think i was better off for it)
The Case for Doing Laundry Every Day by Rebecca Onion (insane, IMO)
watching: mostly fallow, did watch one of the dunmeshi eps that came out when i was gone with the boy yesterday and will probably watch the second one tonight.
i have Opened the jenny nicholson star wars hotel video, not yet watched, but saw in my patreon emails from friends at the table that the tablefriends did a related episode on their star wars podcast, which, i then noticed like [leo decaprio pointing meme] xeecee spotted in the credits for the cover art ?? i'm not surprised they are aware of each other but i thought it was funny
playing: fallow! completely, for once! no ttrpgs, no video games, etc. i guess i played a Lot of solitaire on my flight back from the uk, maybe that counts lol
making: i did a lot of sketching on my trip! i made a watercolor travel journal that somehow doesn't have enough pages so i'll have to rebind it but oh well. no watercolor pics for now but i'm excited to share those as i go! in the meantime, some sketches i did in the east princes street gardent, the scottish parliament, and the victoria and albert museum in london respectively:
i think once i finish the travel journal ill try to do a higher quality scan of it and upload a pdf somewhere, i feel like that will be fun.
eating: ough i ate a lot of good food in the uk. mostly the non-british food unsurprisingly but i Did have some really good fish & chips moments. last meal of the trip especially we got a recommendation from one of my brother's friends who goes to cambridge and ouuuugh that shit was So good.
misc: it's good to be back ... now i'm back in The Grind (work) but i don't mind it. despite the jetlag i'm feeling refocused and excited to get moving on stuff again. i liked a lot of stuff about the uk (trains, vibes) but i also did not like some stuff (why are the cold meds So weak there lmfao) and overall i'm glad to e home :)

Aftershock Day 1 Recap:
Day 1 was incredible!!!!
Let's start at the beginning. The line situation when trying to enter was super weird this year, but an employee let us go into a line we otherwise wouldn't have been able to go into. That line got us in really quickly. Thank you to that man lol.
The first band we saw was Pinkshift! It was my second time seeing them. They brought a lot of energy, and I'm glad I knew more of their songs this time around. My aunt really liked them and wants to check their music out now too! Speaking of my aunt. She won lots of cool points. I made bracelets to give away, and my aunt threw the Pinkshift one on stage. The singer grabbed it, made a heart gesture, and threw one back!! (It's in the pictures below!!) That was one of the best things to happen to me at Aftershock!! I also got a rose that was thrown by the singer!! đĽ°
The next artist we saw was Nothing.nowhere. I admittedly had a bit of trouble trying to get into his music while doing my festival prep, but he was really good live!! I had a fun time vibing and headbanging. He was really engaging with the audience, and seemed happy to be there. Plus, he covered One Step Closer by Linkin Park!!! I had no clue he was going to do that. My dad, aunt, and I are humongous LP fans, so we really went hard singing and headbanging.
Next was White Reaper! They were vibey. They were definitely the most chill set of the day. They were nice to watch and relax a little. It was pretty stinking hot already at this point, so I enjoyed the break from jumping and headbanging. They were entertaining, and my aunt knew a few of their songs!
Thousand Below was the first time in the day we saw a solid mosh pit. They were heavy and awesome! I had an equally fun time watching the band as I did watching the pit!! There were a couple kids on their parents shoulders in the mosh pit. They looked like they were having a great time, and it was fun to see. I always worry about kids in crowds, but those kids were very safe and very happy.
We were only able to catch about 20 minutes of Pennywise's set, but I'm grateful for those 20 minutes! They were good!! I really like their music, so I was excited and had decently high expectations. They definitely met my expectations. We sat down to rest a bit during their set, but nonetheless it was still fun!
Next up was Stone Temple Pilots!! This was my third time seeing them, and also probably the best time. I'm a huge huge huge STP fan. I managed to get really close to the stage, and I had a great view the whole time. I also went a little crazy, because they played Big Bang Baby!! It's my favorite song, and they didn't do it last time. I screamed louder than I had all day at that point lol. I was jumping through the whole song. I was separated from my dad, but afterwards he told me he recorded the song for me!!
We got surprisingly close for AFI considering we literally got to the stage as the band was coming on. My aunt has been wanting to see them for years, so this was her moment. It was my second time seeing them. They were as good as I remembered! That crowd wasn't too rowdy or crowded, and the mosh pit when on pretty much the entire time. My aunt went into the mosh pit, and I found out that was her first time!
We only watched some of Incubus' set, because we wanted to get close for Avenged Sevenfold. They were really good though! I hope one day I can catch a full set, since last time I saw them it was also only a partial set. We met up with some of my dad's old work friends at this point. They're super sweet, so it was nice to see them. Both of them kept commenting on how big I am now lol. I think I'm still like 10 in their minds, but that's okay lol. We don't see each other often.
Avenged Sevenfold was incredible, obviously. This was my second time seeing them, but my first time in a festival setting. They had so much energy. M Shadows' voice absolutely delivered, and it is no secret that I think Synyster Gates is a god. There was a pit in front of us that never lost steam through the entire set. I got pushed around a bit, but my aunt and dad made sure I was safe and could enjoy the show. I was able to see the band on stage for most of the set, which was definitely nice. They had cool visuals on the screens though, so it wasn't too bad when I couldn't see the band.
I was able to give out all of my bracelets, and everyone seemed really excited about them!! No one was expecting a bracelet lol. I'm looking forward to handing more out today!! I also met some dude in a band. We were talking for a couple minutes, and he was really nice. After this weekend, I'll have to check out his music. I love meeting local musicians!!

Rosie, 24, EST; she/any. | if youâre hearing NOT THE DOCTOR by ALANIS MORISETTE playing, you have to know AYAAN KLEIN (NONBINARY THEY/THEM) is near by! the 28 year old CURATOR has been in denver for, like, 6 YEARS. theyâre known to be quite AVOIDANT, but being CREATIVE seems to balance that out. or maybe itâs the fact that they resemble AVAN JOGIA. personally, iâd love to know more about them seeing as how theyâve got those EVER EXPANDING BUMPER STICKER COLLECTION, SUNGLASSES COVERING DISTRACTED EYES, STAINED COPIES OF ANTHROPOLOGY ARTICLES COLLECTED OVER THE YEARS  vibes. and maybe iâll get my chance if i hang out around the UNIVERSITY DISTRICT long enough!
hello all, here are some things about my child Ayaan for now
Ayaan was born to an indian british mother, and an american father. His family was always a blend of these two cultures and made for an interesting mix being one of the only brown kids in their small Wisconsin town.
Has always been a little bit weird, they were always way smart and would say prolific things without batting an eyelash, but also never think to much on it all. the more they think about things, the more they would get worked up about stuff, so best to left the thoughts float in and out of your brain.
Decided to take this kind of passion but needing to put it into something rather than just sit with it festering, they decided to go to school for socio cultural anthropology and archeology.
They've been in denver since they got into the university for their joint masters-phd program. Now they are a curator for the anthropology museum.
a fun vibey human but if the vibe isnt right, don't expect them to stick around long. The absolute ruler of the irish goodbye.
I humbly dubbed them what i call a sjs social justice slut.

[-REVIEW-] IVE: I've IVE
Album cover taken from YoutubeMusic
Background pictures taken from reddit [1] [2] [3]
âItâs our time, weâre different, we like special things | Oh what a good time | Iâm good, worrying about me is a waste of time | No reply after reading the DM you sent | Thatâs my answer (Thatâs my style)â
(english translation taken from colorcodedlyrics.com)
Ok, so first things first⌠this is my first album review in a looong long time, how exciting (and intimidating⌠kinda) ! If iâm not just de-rusting, I guess I am sort of debuting too, albeit todayâs feature already debuted and this is another kind of debut for them but yeah you get the point.
Anyways, enough about me, and more about the feature in question, because itâs quite a heavy hitter ! If youâve paid any attention to kpop lately, you might have heard of IVE â PAKs flying everywhere, broken records all across the board, enough albums sold to build a bridge across the sea and a handful of very strong songs to their name. What a year. Which made Iâve IVE (yeah), their first full-length project (and a full album at that !!!) all the more exciting; I mean, I really donât consider myself an IVE stan (...yet?), even though I either really liked or LOVED everything they had released so far, but I canât deny that I was impatiently waiting for April 10th to come â if only because, donât lie, the thought of one of the leading girl groups of our times releasing their first album after an unbroken until now string of singles would at least slightly pique the interest of anyone. Well, itâs finally here, so what now ?
One of my main questions when this was announced was; just what sound exactly would they go for ? If ELEVEN, LOVE DIVE and After LIKE were all united in being excellent upbeat goodness, I wouldnât really say they were cohesive sonically. And the answer is⌠honestly, a little bit of each ! But more precisely, Iâve IVE seems to follow in the girlboss crush (?) footsteps of After LIKE b-side My Satisfaction â somewhat of a surprise, but ultimately quite a pleasant one for sure. I maintain that My Satisfaction far outclassed After LIKE and was very close to being their best song and look at us now
I was actually a bit afraid of what the final result would be at first, especially after hearing the highlight medley. What I had heard was undeniably good, but not necessarily up my alley â to give you an example that stays within the kpop sphere, my heart is usually with the likes of T-ARAâs (immortal banger) Bo Beep Bo Beep. But I thought, well, itâs just a highlight medley⌠they have not missed so far⌠people said the songs they performed at the fanmeet were great (someone called NOT YOUR GIRL a Sistar song which DEFINITELY had me listening)⌠itâs IVE⌠surely an album tied to these insane concept photos won't miss⌠letâs wait and see. And I was right !! Because ultimately, Iâve IVE stands as an extremely enjoyable record !
The sound they went for here is very in-line with (what I perceive to be) their chic, elegant, cool girl concept; Iâd say for the most part (mostly the b-sides) itâs very soft and never really in-your-face, quite easy to listen to with a nice flow, but at the same time itâs still really cool and commands your attention just by existing and doing it pretty much flawlessly. Iâd compare it to silk. It straddles the line between cool and vibey & catchy and engaging perfectly; which I have to give it credit for, because like I said itâs usually really not the type of sound I'm fully into. I also think a lot of songs that go for it can easily fall in the trap of trying to be a âsoft bopâ so hard that they end up feeling bland / boring / sanitized and turn into the musical equivalent of watching white paint dry. But here, itâs executed perfectly, from the subtle groove of Lips to the spacey synth touches of Cherish and many more. Itâs also one more thing that works in the albumâs favor, because as itâs located perfectly at those crossroads â for exemple, itâs both music to get ready to for a night out and music to actually live that night out to â, itâs a very versatile album that youâll be more likely to run back to in different situations, and as such itâs always a strong player no matter where or what.
Part of why it works so well is that even though pretty much every song exists in that sonic universe, with super smooth modern beats and arrangements that feel minimal without ever becoming too sparse, they all have a different enough energy and goal that they try to achieve. You have the funk and playfulness of Lips & Kitsch, the calm and stillness of Cherish & Heroine, the subtle emotions of Mine & Shine With Me, the edgier sounds of Blue Blood, the super boppy joy and sass of NOT YOUR GIRL & I AM, and not only does it differentiates every track while also keeping the experience fresh without ever having to uproot the listener, it also helps the whole package come together into a strong album that at least touches every mark of what a typical album should be. Chill bops, boppier bops, more emotional bops, you have it all with no stark tonal shift; so as a self-contained work, Iâve IVE covers every ground it needs to in order to confidently stand tall while also keeping enough strengths redistributed in certain areas to add just that bit of charm that makes it shine.Â
There is sort of an outlier here however, and that is track 7, Hypnosis; one hell of an outlier too, and one that I'm gonna have to give the spotlight to for a bit because whew. From the very beginning with those disorienting and rattling electric synths, you know youâre in for a treat, and the song is quick to confirm that. Itâs almost the antithesis of the album, in a way; whereas Iâve IVE is elegant and subtle, Hypnosis is twisted and almost crooked in a way, with dissonants and irregular instruments crawling around the floor of a beat that ultimately proves itself to be SO addictive, contrasting with the soft and dreamy voices of the girls like a solar eclipse. Hypnosis takes the formula of the album and twists it inside out, resulting in this sort of shadow twin that feels like an occult experiment gone wrong in the best possible way. On 1st listen, it reminded me a lot of something Iâd hear in the gym of Ecruteak City in Pokemon Gold, mostly because of those electric synths that have a very GameBoy Color quality to them, and god knows that hit me straight in the heart. If you feel bored by Iâve IVE "playing it too safe", then at least try this one, because itâs certainly experimental and genuinely such a great song like oh my god⌠no subtlety here, just a fever nightmare that wonât let you escape.
âŚBack to the album now. If this sound palette works so well here, it has to be said, itâs because the production is EXCELLENT. Itâs clean, tight, professional and straight to the point, like a shiny, deep-cleaned high end kitchen. Good tools make for great work if used correctly, and the group was armed with nothing but quality here. But what I really like about it, and what lifts Iâve IVE higher, is that itâs littered with a bunch of sparkly flourishes that add the finishing touch to already strong songs. The kazoo in Kitsch, the violin-like strings in the Blue Blood post-chorus, the smooth piano and strings in the background of Cherish, the guitar slowly emerging in Mine for exemple; all are insanely neat little details that add so much to their respective song and truly take them there. In fact, Iâd say that they make the softer songs like Lips & Cherish win over their more energetic peers such as I AM & NOT YOUR GIRL because thatâs where theyâre easier to pick up on and also where they work excellently, making use of the minimal landscapes to place themselves just where they need to and give the songs very pleasant depth â once again, thatâs one of the ways in which Iâve IVE avoids the pitfalls of boringness, and thatâs by knowing exactly how to mix its ingredients with the perfect amount of pop-up-y flavor to leave a mark. Itâs not just âyeah make it as unoffensive as possibleâ minimalism, itâs minimalism where every little piece is perfectly arranged with the others and completed by that one touch which seals the deal. Their producers did amazing work, for sure, and it gave us such a treat to Listen⢠to.
I do wish the songs themselves were a bit longer though â theyâre already all pretty much great, but some would still hugely benefit from something like a longer bridge, an actual bridge, a post chorus, another verse⌠Iâm thinking of Blue Blood in particular, itâs a good bop and serves as a great intro but it would blossom so beautifully if it was extended just a bit. Hypnosis also kind of suffers from this, but that one is so impressive that I kind of forget itâs very short lol, yet imagine if it was longer??? The 11-tracks length is perfect because the album doesnât ever overstay its welcome while also having enough room to expand and do everything it needs to â you canât take away from Iâve IVE that itâs an extremely concise experience, and thatâs sort of a good thing. But I really think that effect would have been kept had the songs been given more time, so itâs a shame that a lot of them are pretty short, usually stopping at around 3 minutes. For all the things I love about it, I guess thatâs the big drawback of the streaming era. In that way, it clearly works, because while writing this I went through the album like twice and I didnât intend to do so at all but I just didnât notice that it was looped lol, so here are the extra streams in question â but part of that does lie in the fact that like I said, Iâve IVE is an easy listen.
For a first full-length album, Iâve IVE was definitely a great start. Itâs very approachable and appeals to a wide audience, but itâs not satisfied by just doing the bare minimum and sacrificing all individuality to reach as many people as possible. Instead, the album pulls out the tricks it has up its sleeve at perfect times to climb up to the next levels on this flawless model walk itâs taking â all without ever breaking a sweat. You can tell there was effort put into this and that they werenât just like âoh yeah who cares this will sell anywaysâ. Iâve IVE invites the audience to get into its groove very smoothly, but it never babies them or insults their intelligence by giving them pleasing mind-numbness, instead opting to serve precisely-crafted offerings with that âconnoisseurâ feel that they know will be genuinely appreciated. The end result is without a doubt a high quality product. Even if IVEâs concept is a match-made in heaven with the sound of the album â i honestly think this was the perfect road to take for them â, itâs still one that any group would be honored to have to its name. They landed on the ground strutting, and wherever it goes from there, this stop has not shown a single sign of wavering flames; if anything, theyâre only getting higher thanks to a perpetually-refined craft.

âŚNow about me and this blog⌠as you know, this is my very first review, so this feels relevant to say here, but Iâll admit â allow me to be a bit dramatic â this is kind of a scary experience ?? I really donât know what Iâm doing and Iâm still trying to tune this into something with a nice structure and good commentary and a strong footing that I donât think I have found yet and I donât even know if Iâm just gonna lose interest after a week or keep it running for a month or two or a year who knows??? Certainly not me. So yeah itâs a bit shaky for now. But I guess I'll just keep walking until I get the hang of things ? (I havenât even figured out Tumblr yetđ) So⌠until then, look forward to it !! (and I promise i wonât be pesky like that every single time lol, keep watching and youâll see!)

1, 3, 6, & 15!
OH THIS WAS SO DIFFICULT
1. A song you like with a colour in the title
Is it a cop-out if I say 'Black Hole Sun' by Soundgarden ;) okay aside from that, the runner-ups are a toss-up between 'Golden Skans' by Klaxons and 'Black Sails' by Chastity Belt - both of those being some really vibey mellow indie rock!
3. A song that reminds you of summertime
Makes sense from the Everything about my interests, but every time summer starts rolling around I HAVE to have the full Danger Days album on rotation, even if I haven't listened to much MCR throughout a particular year - it's like a craving to me every time the sun comes out!
6. A song that makes you want to dance
I don't really dance much actually! I have no body awareness! Even tho I had to do contemporary dance in middle school lollll okay BUT I do get dance feelings about really bouncy tracks like 'Patins' by CSS or 'Take Off Your Shirt' by Bibio, or stuff like 'Strange Timez' by Gorillaz and Robert Smith!
Also 6 yr old me DID used to bop around the house to Madonna's 'Sorry' đ
15. A song that is a cover by another artist
"I WANNA BE YOUR JOEY RAMONE" BY GERARD WAY, covering Sleater Kinney..... my ETERNAL fucking BELOVED
Bonus shoutout to Trey Anastasio's cover of Gorillaz' 'Clint Eastwood', and Harley Poe's cover of Pixies' 'Where Is My Mind'
Thank u for asking!!

Arulia...
So there is significantly less to cover and go over with Arulia than Em so we will be starting with her!
Arulia was originally designed to be a romanceable charcter for a scrapped project from around 2017. She was victorian-ish, Jane Austen vibey situation. Think Elizabeth Bennet at the end of the Pride and Prejudice (2005) in terms of hairstyle and mannerism.
This is one of two sketches I have remaining of this Arulia design. Unfortunately, lots of moving and accidental throwing away of documents has nearly caused this version and design to be lost.
After the scrapping of the project she was originally designed for, I took full possession of her character and pretty much overhauled her design (with a few exceptions).
At the time of taking back control of Arulia, I may or may not have been carzy obsessed with the romance visual novel app The Arcana. So there were, and still are, heavy style influences. Not saying I have banished The Arcana from my life lol (Asra is still and will always be my favorite).
I'll do some comparing and contrasting of the personalities after I get through the designs.
I thought, at the time of Arulia's redesign, it would be fun to use her as the MC for the story. It was fun! But much later it didnt quite feel right.
Arulia's new design was COMPLETELY different from her original concepts. Im talking wildly long hair, harem pants, puffy snow white-like sleeves, a skirt AND a sash, and some hair accessories! Because WHY NOT.
To be completely honest, at the time I was extremely proud of this. A lot of it doesn't make sense, the face shape was wrong, and she looked a lot younger than she actualy is. For some reason though, I still loved this design.
Also I had been exploring new art sytles that really didn't work well with this character.
I mean... to me this was PERFECT. Intil it wasn't. I actually don't think this design lasted the year.
There was too much and not enough happening at the same time. Because of that, I took to reworking the outfit, keeping the things I like and though suited her quite well, went back to her original face shape and picked things from her original design that just made sense to keep.
I think this is much more suited for my girl. It fits a little better with the character I created around her, and she fit pretty ok into the Arcana world.
My favorite parts of this outfit quickly grew Arulia to be my most drawn character. The shirt sleeves, the hair style, the massive earrings, and the simple patterns on her top.
This is the design that eventually got some offical color to it, but I was new to digital art and brand spaking new to procreate so a lot of mistakes were made.
I still think she cute though. Also, yes I borrowed a pose to help visualize how clothing would sit on her body.
I did spend a couple of years just skatching and drawing Arulia on paper though. My art journal from last year and the year before have almost every page with atleast one Arulia on it.
She consumed my every drawing hour. Not by force, because I begged her to.
I think a few months after I setteld on this outfit and look, I explored a couple other options too. What if she had these pants? What it her hair was different? What if she danced?
Had some really cute concepts of that! But nothing really stuck (look out for the pictures when they're found).
I settled on her more simple design because it was easy to draw repeatedly, easy for others draw, and kinda iconic. I had a few people telling me they haddn't see something like Arulia before and quite liked the concept.
That encouraged me to use her as the face of my streaming content until it didn't. More on that for a later time.
For now this is all I have to share, but Arulia, BY FAR, had the most doodles, drawings, and sketches, so look forawrd to seeing more of those.

HAI!!! :3 I have some pals that are into Sleep Token 'n I am interested!! What songs do you suggest from them?/what are your fav Sleep Token songs?
I'm so sorry if you sent this some time ago, using tumblr on three devices eats my inbox notifications at times and i just found yours and an other ask i haven't seen since mondayđŤ
Also sorry it got long but i'd figure it would be fun to explain why i'd go at it this way.
The short answer: basically anywhere but pay attention to the lyrics because that is what sucks you in even more.
But to properly answer your question.. every single person you'd ask would give you a slightly different list for sure based on various reasons. I'm gonna break down why i'd do it like this. Also what i'd suggest to start with and what are my faves vary a bit. And also what i'd recommend based on someone's taste in music can alter what i'd show first to them but.. in general i'd go something like this (true and tested method [lies only tried once but it worked surprisingly well]).
I'd definitely start with the easily digestable tracks soundwise. The more groovy and vibey stuff that can be enjoyable without paying too much attention to the lyrics. It adds to it of course but nit neccessary.
Aqua Regia, Alkaline, Granite, Rain, Hypnosis, The Apparition and The Offering
At the end of Hypnosis there are a bit of harsher vocals which is a nice teeny tiny introduction to that sides of theirs, but not too much. And The Offering is a great one to show off both the softer vocals but disgustingly catchy instrumentals, also that is probably one of their most iconic songs.
Most people are turned away because of the style of singing Vessel does most of the time, with all the bends and runs and high notes. Also the constrictions, bordering on whines sometimes and also heavily breathy vocals. Occasional crying. There is a lot of emotions on display, of which if you vibe with can hit pretty hard. It's neither genre typical nor used as a usually commercialized singing technique in general. I'm not saying it's oooh so unique, others do it as well, but it's definitely not the type you hear from every other song on the radio. The other part can be the unusual arrengments in songs and the collecting genres like pokemons. So these up here are more on the easier side with that.
I'd probably add in Euclid as well to these just to showcase the more pop influenced side but still having proper guitars in it and stuff. Also that track is great to show how dynamic their music can be without any screamy jumpscare.
Than i'd say look at the slower sad stuff because it's trademark for them, also still on the commonly enjoyable side in regards of sound. And this would be the point i'd say start to pay attention to the lyrics properly because that is half the appeal of Sleep Token.
Blood Sport (from the room below), Missing Limbs and Atlantic are great examples.
And after those i'd go with some of the heavy hitters (also the ones with a bit more harsh vocals) like The Summoning, Ascensionism, Take Me Back To Eden and Vore.
And then if you are still interested at this point i'd recommend just putting on the entire This Place Will Become Your Tomb album. There are basically next to none harsh vocal surprises but there are heavier instrumentals at certain points. And it is such a contained experience, regardless of it being a middle part of a trilogy.
If you get through the album and still feel like you want more, than it really is just up to you which tracks do you want to dip your toes in next, because you seen most of what they can offer but still going to ran into new and fresh stuff. Their discography is a bag of nicknacks and all of them are preciois for different resons. TMBTE (their last album) is a higher quality production and caters more to the general audiences soundwise, i think. Sundowning (first album) is more raw but no less enjoyable. Also the certified 'sexy song' (Sugar) is on that one. The EPs and covers, i'd recommend last probably, not because they are not good, on the contrary but they are a bit more niche, bit more restrained in soundscape and a bit more soulful but they are heavy hitters emotionally for sure.
One might argue i left out the singles and the first album but here is the thing. The production quality goues up significantly on each album. For a listener who doesn't come for the lyrics first but the sound, Dark signs and Jaws or Jerico may be less captivating than let's say Granite, for a first time listener. Of course it is highly dependent on the given person but i'm talking in general.
And to answer a 'what are my favourites' part of the question, my all time favourite track of theirs is Higher by all means. The rest is in an ebb and flow depending on my mood but The Offering, Descending, Like That and Gods are always up there for me.
Have a wonderful day every day!
