Another World - TDC Holidays - Day 3
Look, all I’m saying is Kat deserves better.
Tumblr media
DAY 3
AU: KAT FALLING IN LOVE
POV: KATHARINE
The first time she met Xavier Harcress, they were a little bit drunk.
It had been at a gala the governor had thrown and Kat had been dragged along with her sisters so they could all “branch out.” Xavier had been hanging around Billy chatting when they had entered. Kat knew very little about him but what she did know is that he was just about the most attractive man she had ever seen. Tall and strong with warm strawberry blonde hair and eyes so blue they could have been a clear sky.
She had seen him and Arsinoe in the middle of some intense debate and had come over, slumping against Arsinoe’s side, not that her older sister noticed, not even breaking conversation to swing her arm around Kat.
But Xavier paused, reaching a hand out to her to introduce himself. His voice was smooth and warm and filled her with butterflies and Arsinoe caught the blush of her ears. She looked between them before standing and passing Kat her champagne.
“Xavier, keep my sister entertained, my boyfriend owes me a couple of dances,” Arsinoe says. Xavier stutters an affirmative and then Arsinoe is gone, the hem of her emerald green skirt brushing against Kat’s knees when she walks past.
“So, Xavier, how do you know Arsinoe?” She asks, unsure of what else to say. Xavier smiles slightly.
“I go to university with Billy. And you are of course Arsinoe’s sister. She talks a lot about you two,” Kat smiles, shooting a fond look at where her sister was dancing. “May I ask you something?” Kat braces for something terrible. A comment on the fading tattoos on her forehead or about her infamous time on the throne of Fennbirn, “Does Arsinoe talk about Billy to you as much as Billy talks about Arsinoe to me?” He asks, an easygoing smile on his face. Kat feels relief course through her body as the question makes her laugh.
“Oh, goddess, yes. They are the worst couple ever,” Kat exclaims and Xavier laughs.
“Right? Billy is a terrible drinking buddy because all he does is talk about her,” he explains and Kat giggles.
“Oh, if you don’t enjoy that then you should never ask Arsinoe about their chickens-“
“and how Billy and Arsinoe worked on the coop together!” Xavier finishes excitedly and then they’re laughing. Suddenly he stood up and offered her a hand.
“Would you like to dance with me, Katharine?” Kat took his hand and tried not to blush at the sparks that shot up her arm.
~
If anyone had asked, she had not been writing Xavier since he had gone back to university in the next city over. The only person who knew was Jane because she was the only one who could keep a secret and respected that Kat wasn’t ready to talk about it. But every time she received a letter from Xavier her heart did a weird fluttery thing she didn’t understand but she really liked so she kept writing back.
It wasn’t even interesting stuff, either. It was mostly dumb things about the weather or his cooking or her sunflowers or how dumb they thought the newest music genres were, even as he promised to take her to a music festival the next time they saw each other. Kat was concerned she was jumping in like a fool but her innocuous snooping about it to Arsinoe had reassured her that maybe it wasn’t stupid to deny herself something that made her feel good. Her sister was always a good example on how to be happy, even if it was a little crazy.
So when the spring holidays rolled around, Kat hopped onto a train to meet Xavier at a music festival. When they meet at the station, he smiles wide and picks her off the ground when he hugs her. She blushes when he smiles at her.
“Shall we go, m’lady?” He asks and she laughs, looping her arm through his offered one anyway.
The music was loud and bouncy and Kat bopped along as they got food, before a pit grew in her stomach at the thought of going into the crowd, the thought of all those hands on her brewing a sense of what Arsinoe had called ‘anxiety’. But Xavier didn’t even go in that direction, instead spreading a picnic blanket out on a hill from which they could clearly see the stage without having to fight through a crowd.
“If you want to go in, just let me know but I haven’t seen you ever particularly enjoy large crowds like that,” he explained and she smiled. It wasn’t often that she didn’t feel patronised by those comments, but she could tell that it was a genuine kind thought on his part. She holds his hand and they listen to the music in the field together.
She even kisses his cheek when she leaves, balancing high on her tiptoes.
She doesn’t tell her sisters where she’s been all day but Arsinoe’s smirk tells Kat that she may already know.
~
He had sent her flowers in their weekly correspondence after that, and a proposal to officially court her. It wasn’t the first time she had been courted, of course, she was a queen of Fennbirn, but it was the first time that it had felt real, as though someone saw her and wanted to know her. Not the crown on her head (literal or figurative) or the sisters she would kill, but all of her, her love of animals and her sisters and the way she danced when she felt like no one was judging. She had sent back a letter agreeing to his proposal if he could get her sisters’ approval.
Through some correspondence she is not privy to, he does.
Their routine doesn’t change. She is still an apprentice for a seamstress and he is still in university far enough away that it is difficult to coordinate, but their letters are sweeter, more in depth. Kat cares about what Xavier thinks and says and his response to her thoughts is always honest without being rude or dismissive.
She gets the feeling Arsinoe and Mirabella are beginning to find the letters so they make up a code the next time they see each, when he meets her at the train station and hugs her with such joyous gusto, she is lifted off her feet. She felt weightless and giggly when he kisses her cheek, his arms warm around her.
(They’re probably breaking, like, six Mainland rules of propriety, but with his eyes as bright as they are, Kat actually can’t give two shits).
~
She doesn’t tell anyone they’re moving in together until they do it. Arsinoe and Mirabella are surprised but they bring champagne to the tiny apartment anyway, both levelling very obvious protective older sibling glares at Xavier as he leaves for his internship with a kiss on her cheek. He doesn’t turn and run and that seems to be enough for her sisters.
She finishes her apprenticeship and begins working. Xavier transfers from an internship to a job, working in trading and international business. They cook dinner together every night and eat by the fire. She sews while he irons and he reads while she tends to the flowers in their window box.
The first time they come together, it is close to her birthday and she could only see with the soft moonlight on his skin and feel the way he held her close, like she was a particularly rare treasure. She loved him more than anything.
~
She didn’t even remember most of her wedding, the day too busy to truly catch everything. She knows her eldest nephew had been being the cutest devil and that Mirabella cried enough that the makeup artist refused to redo her mascara for the fourth time.
She knows Xavier looked at her in a way no one else ever had. He didn’t care about the tattoos or the nightmares or that to a society obsessed with women who could have children, she wasn’t worth much. He said his vows and she said hers and both of them meant what they said.
They didn’t have children, didn’t need them. They babysat for their siblings enough. They had each other and their friends and family and that was all they needed as the grew old together.

i just finished juno steel and what lies beyond
and OH MY GOSH!
everything was so so sweet and i cried i CRIED
and i have several disjointed and unedited thoughts!
(longass rambly post under the cut)
getting to hear juno narrate after so long is just so so wonderful i missed him so much and my first tears were shed just hearing him talk with his theme playing in the background
and getting banter between him and nureyev is always Very Good but also im a Little Bit Worried about nureyev
i feel in my heart that hes genuine about almost everything but like at his core hes just a big ol MYSTERY (and i mean how fitting that he ended up with a lady who just LOVES those things)
just feels like hes the Unknown wrapped up in a cozy blanket of Adorable Dork and im scared theres something Really Big and Bad that hes hiding (cuz i mean whens he NOT hiding something?)
but i definitely dont think its going to be anything Very Bad just maybe a little bit Bad or just Wow youknow?
but him giving juno a little book of puzzles that lead him around whats been their home and the place theyve built their entire domestic relationship, reminiscing on all their time spent on the ship with their Family?? sweetest shit ive ever seen.
but alsoooooo,,,,,
felt sorta proposal-y,,,,,,
i doubt thats what he was going for and maybe it was just that i had marriage on the brain because of buddy and vespa-
i cried when they were giving their vows
esspecially when vespa was recounting their first meeting and buddy had said "you and i work well separately- but dont you think wed be better together?"
liKE???
do you two HAVE to go and make me Feel Emotions like That?????
theyre so sweet the two of them
i also cried when they reunited back in season 2 on their lighthouse <:'}}}
and then juno talkong about how much he loves nureyev and wants to Know Him is Just 💕💕😭😭😭💕💕
But Then
BOOM
BIGASS DARK MATTERS SPACESHIPPP
BOOM
SASHA WIRE
BOOM
JUNO DOWN
and Im Like
WHAT THE HELL WHAT
we were having a nice Emotions Time and now there is Gunfire? excuse me????
i cannot recount to you the dread in my gut when juno was like "but then....."
i was like
NO
HELL NO
nooooo why cant we all just have a nice time and kiss our boyfriends and learn their dark secrets without Big Bad Evils getting In The Way???
i just love Feeling Emotions
anyway super excited for whatevers coming next!! will dark matters get away with the cure mother prime?? is that even what theyre looking for?? i dont remember if they said specifically that they were looking for it so maybe its somethng else and therell be a Twist?? i dont know!! and im so excited!
i am also So So Proud of juno.
i said that in my season two post but like
im so proud of him.
i know its really silly to be Proud of a fictional character who is also 20+ years older than you but i legitimately am
hearing him so genuinely happy made me feel So Many Emotions
because he did that
he got out of that dark place and he made that happiness
and i love him
and im so so proud of him
and im so happy for him
and i just want him to be happy for the rest of his like because he deserves it dammit
and i just cant stress enough how much i love him
its so weird! to have all this love in my heart! for this person! who does not exist!
and i know it doesnt matter if hes real or not but for some reason its just sticking there in my brain that somehow this Pretend detective has made me Love Him
i think alot of it is that i went through this journey with him and i heard him fall into a bigass pit and not even try to get out for so long and then i heard him decide that he was going to be better and i heard him do that
and also that im quite emotional right now but thats besides the point
i love him so so much and he just breaks my heart
i dont know if its healthy to feel that much for a character
maybe i relate just a little too much to Juno Steel.
ANYWAY
loved the episode!! cant wait for whatever may come next 🤔🤔

December 29: The Wrath of Khan
Today’s movie watching was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
My overall impression versus TMP is that this is clearly a smoother and more consistently entertaining film. It has a definite story with very little filler, good pacing, a lot of great little dialogue and character moments, and a strong conflict at its center.
But its sci fi bona fides are much weaker. Like by a lot.
Mom and I are talking a bit about Genesis and the more we talk, the weaker it appears to me. First, it’s not really as believable, imo, as a lot of Star Trek. Maybe it’s because it’s not alien based, but I just have a harder time suspending disbelief to think this is possible. Second, it’s not clear why anyone thought this was a good idea. I mean, as McCoy immediately pointed out, it just seems so CLEARLY dangerous: an object meant to foster creation that could so easily be the worst weapon the universe has ever known--nothing could go awry there! Third, the reason for creating such a device isn’t obvious at all. Carol mentions the “growing population” and “food scarcity” but nothing we’ve ever seen of the Federation implies they’re running out of space. Or, frankly (Tarsus IV aside), food. And fourth, there really isn’t any point to Genesis in all its particulars in this film. Like, obviously, its actual purpose is a plot device to resurrect Spock. Within just this film, it doesn’t do anything. Khan wants it, for some reason I’ve already forgotten even though I just saw the film, and he gets it, but I didn’t even notice that happening, because it was so unimportant. His REAL mission is his single minded revenge fantasy on Kirk. Genesis is just a McGuffin/space filler/plot device for the next film.
And honestly that’s not such a big deal, except that when you compare it to TMP, ,and its central idea of a human made probe that gained so much knowledge, doing what we taught it to do, that it became sentient and then started searching for the meaning of life, and how this relates to the search for meaning experienced by the main alien lead, and how his search, in that film and throughout the series, is a mirror for humans and OUR need for purpose... well it just seems really weak. “We made this really dangerous and unrealistic thing for no reason whoops!”
Mom is now criticizing Kirk for being too slow on the uptake when he first encounters the Reliant, which is fair. That’s pretty OOC of him. The idea that he’s too old for space is both one that I must personally disregard, and one that the film would have you discard, since we’ve already heard from TWO characters, the people who know him best, that his best destiny is as a starship captain, and command is his proper role. And that he might be a little rusty is also not a great explanation imo, because the rust was supposed to have come off in TMP. So, plot hole probably.
We were trying to do some math--TMP is at least 2 years post 5YM and TWOK is at least 10 years post TMP, so at least 8 years post TMP. I can understand more rust growing but like... he was already an Admiral in TMP and the idea that he was out of practice with actual command was a big part of his arc there. So it doesn’t seem warranted to do that again.
Also, the way he was commanding poorly in TMP was very IC: he was pushing too hard, trying too much, caring too much about the mission and not enough about...the laws of physics. That’s very Kirk. Being slow on the uptake, caught with his britches down--that’s not Kirk. Plus, with no one to call him out on it, like Decker did in TMP, his poor command doesn’t seem like a big character obstacle to overcome but just like...sloppiness all around.
I thought Khan was over all... just not that interesting. I guess I’m just not into the obsession/revenge plot. Also...idk man he didn’t seem that super to me. He outsmarted Kirk, like, once, and Kirk outsmarted him like 4 times. He tortured some people--but regular humans can do that. He used those sandworm thingies, which is also something humans could do. Overall, he didn’t seem to have any particularly special skills. The only time he really seemed like a worthy adversary for Kirk was when Kirk wasn’t really being IC himself.
I’m also not into the fridging of his wife. Think how much cooler it would have been if she’d still been alive! The only non-super human in the bunch and she’s still there! Ex-Starfleet and bitter!
The K/S in this film is very soothing. Imo they are clearly together here, and the whole film is better if you assume they’re boyfriends and everyone knows. That Vulcan convo that Spock and Saavik have? Waaaaay funnier if you think she’s talking about his boyfriend (”not what I expected....very human” “Well no one’s perfect”). Every time they call each other ‘friend’ like ““friend”“? All the Looks? The birthday gift?
Also the “I have been and always shall be your [friend]” scene is a wedding I will not be taking criticism on this opinion. Could it have been written more like a vow? I think not. It’s not quite This Simple Feeling but it’s the best this film has in that regard.
I liked Saavik and I do think she’s one of the better later-movie additions (though I only like her, as far as I can remember, when played by Kirstie Alley). She didn’t necessarily strike me as super alien, though, at least not at first... But I appreciated how persistent she was about the stupid test, and her regulation quoting. I enjoyed her. I also liked how she was obviously Spock’s protege, which makes her Kirk’s step-protege, and they had just a little bit of that awkward dynamic going on. (”Did you change your hair?”)
The Bones and Kirk relationship was great in this film. You can really feel their friendship and their history with each other. Bones knows him so well and can be honest with him, just when Kirk needs it most.
I also love how Kirk has the SAME conversation with both Bones and Spock (re: being a captain again) but with Spock it’s sooooo much flirtier. In case you weren’t sure what the difference in these two relationships is.
Bonus: this bit of dialogue: Spock: “Be careful, Jim.” / Bones: “WE will.” Lol Spock people who aren’t your boyfriend do exist.
Obviously, I cried during THAT scene. Honestly AOS should have taken note about how to do emotional scenes like that: they come after the main action is over and the villain is defeated. Then they hit at the right time and to the right degree. Kirk just slumping down after Spock dies....like he’s boneless...like he doesn’t know what to do... I CANNOT.
I feel so bad for him that I’ll even forgive him that awful eulogy. Spock died for Genesis? Uh, no, he died for the Enterprise, and for YOU. Spock is the “most human”? You shut your whoreson mouth
I remember hating both Carol and David but I actually hated them less this time, Carol especially. My mom is being really harsh about her, though, which makes me feel less confident in my assessment. I mean first off, she’s the inventor of Genesis, which is a pretty big strike against her. Second...pretty lame to keep Kirk from David. Although I did some vague math and Kirk would only have been about 21, still in the Academy, when David was born, so you can see how that would work out. Also, she distinctly says “Were we together?” which means they were not--this was a fuck buddy arrangement for sure. More complicated. But it still feels weird to retcon that, like, he’s known THIS WHOLE TIME that he’s a dad and we’re only learning about it now, as an audience.
Anyway I’m getting off track. Carol. What to make of her? Is she unstable? Is she still mad at Kirk? My mom points out that she just decided on her own that David would want to join Starfleet if he knew Kirk was his father--whereas what seems to have happened instead is he didn’t just become a civilian scientist like his mom but became her specific protege--working on a project where everyone was probably handpicked by her? I would assume? Also..he hates Starfleet. Not to put everything on the mom, but how did that happen?
Also...going down the rabbit hole of this and feeling awkward about it... but David KNEW Kirk. As “that guy you hung around with.” That means Kirk was in his life for quite a while, long enough for him to have memories, and long enough for those memories to still be with him even into his 20s. But he was never allowed to know who Kirk was. That means Carol’s rule must have been “You can see your son but you can’t tell him who you are” which in some way seems meaner to me than just “please don’t contact us again.” If he was already on his way into space, that could even make sense--”I know you’re not going to be able to be a family with us, so let’s not pretend, let’s make a clean break now.” But that wasn’t what happened!
Anyway whatever not to be HAICG!Kirk about this or anything lol
David is mostly annoying because he’s so anti-Kirk lol. I found him least annoying when he came around to Kirk at the end. Another big strike against him: he wore his sweater tied over his shoulders in such a Preppy manner. I honestly don’t see what about him is supposed to be reminiscent of Kirk.
David/Saavik was definitely happening lol. I wish I could have heard that conversation. It sounds like she told him a lot!!! Not sure why she attached herself to this particular annoying human so fast but I guess she did.
....I think that might be all. The uniforms and general styling were much better than TMP (though less funny/entertaining), and it was certainly an enjoyable overall yarn. A lot to pick apart and critique but in a fun way. Will probably watch The Search for Spock soon.

Hey, I recently found your blog and I love your writing! Is it okay if I ask for some headcanons of Daughter of Hephaestus!MC from that one L&L/PJO crossover post? I know that it was it’s an older post.
OF COURSE, IT IS. Old posts or not, I definitely have ideas. I am super pumped people like my writing. Like… it super motivates me to keep going.
Alright, given that this is about a specific MC, I’m naming her… *looks up Greek Heroes* Atlanta. Atlanta Copperfield. As well, we’re going to have some general headcanons before going into the other ones.
LONG ASS POST
General
Atlanta fought in both wars. She’s not the best smith of the cabin or anything, but she was really good with armor and weapons.
All Hephaestus kids have a Spark that lets them build amazing things. It’s part of their gift from their dad.
Has one of those enchanted belts you can put anything in
Is wicked strong. Like scary, scary strong.
Is semi-immune to fire- not like Leo but can withstand very high temps.
Has a lot of scars from the battles and has a hard time being anything but a fighter.
Left camp due to her PTSD and hatred of herself as she did have to kill siblings during the war.
May or may not secretly hate the Gods.
Does love her dad but in a very distant way.
Her mother died protecting her from a monster when she was six. She really hates Hyrdas.
Witch Queen spell went wonky and the soul latched onto baby Atlanta. Her body changed to match the WQ appearance but no one really notices because God Genes are WEIRD. Seriously- her sister has purple hair. It’s weird.
Atlanta fully accepts she’s in a whole new world because she is used to weird shit.
Reiner
Reiner shows Atlanta around and she just freaks about the not so great armor some of the guards are wearing. Insists on making new ones for them. He shows her to the smithery.
Atlanta becomes a huge help in the castle. Reiner finds himself often sitting with her in the evenings as she designs things. The two build a strong friendship this way.
Thing is the generals don’t realize she looks like the WQ for a while. Mostly cause Atlanta isn’t thin and with long hair hanging down. She’s quite muscular and has her hair in a bun or a ponytail like 99% of the time.
They only figure it out when Atlanta lets her hair down while going for a walk with Reiner in the village, who all now know Atlanta isn’t the WQ cause she’s so nice and builds stuff for them.
Everyone ships her and Reiner. It’s adorable.
Demigods have super quick relationships because most die by like thirty so she is down for a wedding. Yep, oooh, can she make armor for them as their wedding outfits?
Atlanta being semiposessed by the WQ is really fucking scary cause of her demigod blood making her more sturdy and her Spark.
Now, it turns out the Gods are watching and when she gets possessed also get worried because even they feel the WQ is a big fucking deal. Soooooooo… they come to that world.
Yep, Gods appear in Reiner’s castle and don’t care they see them. (Zeus may actually like the fact they believe)
Atlanta loses her Spark to protect it from the WQ until she is either free or dead. Atlanta as well goes into a heavy depression and is very much a zombie during this time because a Spark is part of her soul.
Reiner is literally the only thing keeping her from giving in.
(Wow this is getting long) Being free gives her Spark back and she throws herself into building weapons and armor. It actually takes Solaire yelling at her to have her realize that Oh shit, Reiner is not acting like himself because she was in a giant fog of working.
Big fight with her and Reiner. Both are really bad at acting like adults with their work because he was worrying over her thanks to Ryland and she was worrying over him…
Atlanta is fucking scary with a shield. She is very strong and can even knock down a wall thanks to a strange metal that appeared in her belt one day. She thinks it might be an apology from her dad…
She totally takes him to Camp while in her original world before they leave. Sophie comes to now that she remembers. Chiron likes him and with his help they create a stable portal.
Her siblings approve. They do make them recite a blessing for Hera and jump over a fire but that’s it. They’re married.
Atlanta makes him a crossbow that is enchanted to shoot fire or ice arrows.
August
August totally thinks she’s the WQ for five minutes and then she starts ranting about his sword.
Nope, no longer WQ, now she is a sword buddy. They get along fantastic after that.
Atlanta doesn’t run off beginning season2, instead, she stays because running off would be stupid.
Atlanta dislikes sword fighting. She’s good at it and likes swords but she’s wicked strong so she likes to try and have her fighting resemble that.
She ends up making a wicked heavy sword that lets her smash all she wants. August is appauled.
“Look, I used to ride a pegasus. Horses do not have wings. That is why i suck at this.” “No, you are simply bad at it because you are to stiff-” “I RODE A FLYING HORSE. OF COURSE I AM STIFF.”
August’s mom loves her when she ends up like fixing everything in their inn because her hands just won’t stop. Asta is like “Marry that woman.” August blushes.
The Gods come to yell when they’re in council. Apparently this is her quest and she must defeat the WQ because *some reason*. Her Spark is removed for a year as punishment for letting her gain a body.
It’s awful. August is terrified for her, she’s a zombie. He prays to the Gods, begging. Eventually Hep is like: fuck this and gives her back her Spark early. Just in time for battle.
Atlanta brings Sophie to the Camp. They all pitch in but still Sophie has to stay for now. She hates it but now knows other magic people!!
Atlanta also brings back necter and stuff but still ends up cursed in the end.
August Dad is eh about her. Heard rumors but didn’t believe until she lifted a tree off him and did some pretty cool stuff.
Also again, let her at the broken stuff. She’s good at it.
When August’s sword breaks she offers to make a new one but like… for some reason she can never make the right one. it’s super frustrating for the both of them and she is wicked upset about it. And then they meet Aisetha.
“I could make a better sword.” “No you cannot.” “I’m making one that talks to.”
Aisetha does let Atlanta make the armor to it’s wishes but it does look badass so fine.
These two fuckin hate each other, it’s the best.
The wedding has traditional vows and Chiron, as well as a bunch of siblings, come through a portal to party.
Saerys
Saerys does not think this girl is the WQ. It’s obvious she uses physical strength and the WQ is pure magic.
Atlanta does not go to his room in the beginning- she knows this shit is real. But she and Saerys bond over being really strong and soon they end up having contests with picking shit up.
Atlanta picked up Saerys who was picking up Reiner once.
Atlanta fixes everything still. Also builds random shit everywhere. Eventually, she has to stay with Saerys in his room cause Ryland and Solaire get annoyed when she takes stuff apart.
She can’t help it. Literally. She actually confesses she’s a demigod to Saerys because she feels alone here without any siblings. She may have left camp but she had called them.
Saerys gets being alone.
Atlanta ends up dropkicking Lennox out of town after she gives everyone a speech about his armor and how they’re all idiots for not realizing it was WQ general armor.
Atlanta isn’t affected by Saery’s heat or strength in Turbo Mode and can hold him down.
Dying at the hand of the Witch Queen but being brought back removes half of her Spark. She has a harder time making things and thinking. Saerys is there to help though.
Saerys and Atlanta spar a lot.
Chicago also brings them to find the camp and Saerys realizes they will be in danger no matter where.
The demon gods team up with the Greek Gods to bring Saerys back to life and restore the full of Atlanta’s soul. This also reveals that Atlanta is a demigod to everyone.
Atlanta’s Spark is twisted a little and talks now to her, urging her to create and build weapons. Like messed up weapons of mass destruction.
Saerys and Atlanta struggle a lot with the demon souls possessing Saerys- it’s hard to control them when you also have a nutjob Spark yelling to build things.
At least the stupid Souls like her now, thanks to the Spark giving them ideas.
They warn the Camps about the WQ maybe invading and they get ready.
Atlanta whispers a wedding blessing when they pass each other the rings because they’re already married demon style. Let’s do it demigod.
Altea
Okay, like Saerys she figures that Atlanta is not WQ quick thanks to Atlanta being shit with any magic that is not building things.
Atlanta is given scrap metal because of her need to build things. She doesn’t realize she’s making jewlery with one person in mind until she makes a pretty pair of pink earing and oh.
Atlanta’s crush on tiny Altea is hilarious. Everyone does given Atlanta is the type to give pretty things to her object of affection. Altea is very happy.
Only once did Altea ever agree to be picked up by Atlanta in battle. Never again. Very undignified!
“But fun.” “Stop it my raven.”
Altea meets her family in Chicago and they figure that Iris Messaging still works in the other world afterwards so they chat a lot.
Atlanta’s demigod status is revealed to Altea in Chicago and the two worship Hep and like Athena and stuff but it’s revealed to everyone when Hep comes to give her this special metal so she can make a sword for herself to fight the witch queen.
Atlea compares the Spark to Magic.
Meeting Mireille and finding out Altea’s a princess makes Atlanta feel scruffy. Sure, she’s a demigod but… princess. She’s just a smith.
Altea makes sure she doesn’t feel that way for long.
Atlanta makes a ring for Altea as a proposal thing. She loves it.
seeing her go fully Magical Girl Mode makes Atlanta fall for her all over again.
Meeting her family is hard, given she is very much a smith, but they do warm up. They also Iris Message some friends so that the Queen and King realize they’re telling the truth about Atlanta being from another world and the demigod stuff.
Lional now wants to learn to smith. Atlanta just wants him to stop poking at the fire.
Iseul
Okay, Iseul does not think she’s the WQ because she doesn’t have the right feel.
Atlanta may have punched him once in annoyance.
they may end up in a fight a few times. They just irritate each other to much.
Their first kiss is during a fight. Everyone was betting on it.
Atlanta’s Spark goes into haywire at seeing the bow Iseul has because she has SO MANY IDEAS
Iseul loves it. Every bit. He is always bragging about this girl to everyone in the village when she goes to get fun stuff to play with.
Imohn ends up liking her when she comes up with an arrow that when fired goes into a dragon made out of fire.
atlanta and Iseul are the worst together. Seriously. No, do not… Atlanta, do not make that! Iseul says it’s okay! NO!
The whole demigod thing comes out when the Gods come during a council meeting to yell at Atlanta for letting the WQ out. She points out she did not know what would happen and no one said this was a quest.
Zeus is not pleased but she lives. Barely. Her Spark is taken from her and she falls into a deep depression.
Iseul is struggling to help her and get his mother to accept her. It all really goes to shit when Ishara ends up in a coma without accepting Atlanta.
Atlanta manages to fight through the depression and help Iseul. They wake up Ishara who accepts her. She also gets her Spark back because that was a lesson she had to learn.
“It was a fucking shitty lesson.”
Chicago is nuts. “How on earth… you were supposed to be created only a few years ago!” “Go bug Chiron for that… or maybe like Hecate or something.” Camp is a nightmare.
Magnus is horrified the rumors of her being a demigod are true. Ha, fuck you buddy.
“I’m pregnant!!! OH! I HAVE IDEAS FOR THE NURSERY!!!” “NO ATLANTA!” “YES MY LOVE!”
Just these two idiots are awful.

Dustin’s Enigma (Part One)
Hey guys so I’ve decided to do a multi part thingie. I had this idea a couple days ago and couldn’t get it out of my head until I word vomited 2000 words onto a doc. So here you go. I haven’t decided on an ending yet, but I’m going to make this super long.
The general idea is that the kids are now all in high school and Dustin becomes infatuated with this girl, that’s too old for him. I had to change the ages around a little bit. I bumped Steve down a grade so he’s still in high school. So he’s in Nancy’s grade and the reader is a Junior(one year younger than Steve). Without any further ado, Dustin’s Enigma Part One.
————-
It was the first day of school of your junior year and you were not excited. Summer vacation was boring and you loved learning it was just that you hated the mundane status quo that came with a week of school. Monday, everyone’s tired and finds out about the drama that happened at some party that happened over the weekend. Tuesday, people fill in gaps and rumors spread. Wednesday, people find out the truth and no one cares anymore. Thursday, new party plans are made. Friday, people are hyped for the weekend. Weekend, parties happen and random hookups ensue, not that you knew what that felt like. You were strictly on the outskirts. You moved to Hawkins the summer before your freshman year. Since the town was so small, cliques had formed already and there were no empty spaces. Sure, you had friends, but you guys never went to parties or really hung out after school. Your friendships, if they even could be called that, we’re purely out of necessity. For sharing notes and homework almost exclusively. It was lonely, but you liked it that way, because to you it wasn’t lonely ness, it was solitude.
You walked to homeroom on the first day back, schedule in hand, and a semi positive attitude for the future. As in your future after high school. You couldn’t wait to get the hell out of this god forsaken town and into the real world. Out of the bubble if you will. You wanted city life, and to meet new and interesting people. You wanted action, adventure, romance, and literally anything other than small town living.
When you were walking down the hall, you spotted a group of lost looking freshman. There were six of them, 4 guys and 2 girls. One of them looked confident, like she could take on the world. Another one who couldn’t seem to take his eyes off the confident one. A guy, holding the hands of a girl who looked like she had seen a ghost. A guy who looked slightly familiar. And a guy who was looking straight at you. You looked up at the wall at the clock. You had like 10 minuted before you had to be at homeroom. You decided to be a good person and ask the kids if they needed help, because god it looked like they needed it.
“Hey, do you guys need help,” you asked, in the kindest voice you could muster, “you look lost?”
The one with the curly hair that was staring at you didn’t answer, but kept staring while the one holding the girls hand answered, “uhh yeah could you tell us where this room is?” He said passing over the schedule.
“Oh yeah, that’s umm, down this hall,” You gestured in the direction you were walking in, “and then you turn right at the next hall, I’m heading that way, I’ll show you.”
You started waking, the group of freshman following closely behind. When you got to their turn you looked back and began to explain, “This is the hallway that you’ll al have your homerooms in, I’m assuming you’re not all together, but they should all be in this hall. I’m Y/N and I’m a junior so I’ll be two hallways further down. If you need anything else, just come find me.” You may be standoffish to most, but you really wanted to help these kids have a not terrible high school experience and if showing them where to go could help them, you were more than happy to oblige.
“Thank you, I’m Mike Wheeler, by the way, this is El,” He said referencing to the girl he was holding hands with. Nancy’s little brother, you should have known, Nancy was almost your friend.
“I’m Max!” The girl with confidence and fiery red hair to match said.
“I’m Lucas,” said the boy who was watching Max.
“I’m Will,” said the kid that looked familiar. You immediately realized it was the kid who went missing for like a week 2 years ago. You were surprised it hadn’t clicked sooner.
The last boy with the curly hair didn’t say anything, he just stared at you.
“Is he okay?” You asked, laughing slightly.
“Yeah that’s Dustin, he’s weird, anyway thanks for the help” Mike said as he scurried down the hall with his friends. Lucas slapping Dustin on the back of the head after they left. You couldn’t help but laugh. They were such a cute group, you just hoped that high school wouldn’t tear them apart the way you knew it would.
——
Dustin’s POV
“Dude did you see her! She’s gorgeous!” Dustin said with hearts practically in his eyes.
“She is two years older than you. You think she, a junior, is going to like you, a freshman?” Lucas said as they walked down the hall. Dustin and Lucas didn’t have homeroom together, but the rooms were right next to each other.
“It’s a possibility. I’m a catch,” Dustin declared, following it up with a little growl.
“We will talk about this later, we can’t be late for our first homeroom, let’s go Mike.” Lucas tapped Mike on the shoulder and they walked into their homeroom. Max also ran off to her homeroom after Lucas left leaving El and Dustin standing in the hall. Dustin had promised Mike that he would look out for El in all the classes Mike didn’t have with her. Which were conveniently all the ones Dustin had with her. “Shall we,” Dustin said, gesturing towards the door.
She nodded and headed in the room, Dustin following shortly behind.
Dustin couldn’t get that girl, Y/N, out of his head all day. He was convinced that he was in love with her. Completely and utterly in love with her. When he sat at the lunch table filled with his friends he wasn’t even able to pay attention because he spotted her sitting 3 tables over with a small group of people, who didn’t even appear to be speaking. He was just watching Y/N read. “Dustin, earth or Dustin, see, it’s so in love he’s not even paying attention. He’s in another world. He’s in Y/N land” and at those world Dustin was brought out of his reverie.
“I am not in Y/N land, we’re just in love, were meant to be. Did you see the way she looked at me?” Dustin said dreamily.
“If you mean by the way she looked at you when she asked if you were okay.” Mike said, and the whole group laughed, even El, who never laughed.
“Joke all you want now, but you’re not getting an invite to the wedding.” Dustin pouted.
“If she’s in love with you, why is she talking to Steve?” Lucas asked, nodding his head over in her direction.
“She’s talking to who now?” Dustin snapped, returning his attention back to Y/N.
“I am going to kill Steve,” Dustin declared, beginning to stand up, only to be held down by Lucas.
“Nope, you’re not going over there, after school buddy, after school”
“Fine,” Dustin settled, stopping his resistance and sitting back down,”But I’m showing him whose boss”
——
Your POV
You were having a perfectly pleasant lunch reading you book until someone decided to disrupt your solitude.
“Hey Y/N” It was Steve Harrington.
“What do you want Steve?” You asked in a condescending tone. Once upon a time you had a crush on Steve, then he started dating Nancy, then you vowed to never have a crush again and they all lived happily ever after. Well except Steve and Nancy, that crashed and burned about a year ago.
“I heard you helped a certain group of freshman this morning, they’re basically my children so I wanted to thank you.” Steve seemed almost genuine, maybe he wasn’t the piece of shit that you thought he was. No not again Y/N.
“Oh yeah anytime, I just wanna give them a fighting chance you know, high school’s hard,” You said, eager to get back to your book.
“Anyway I’ll leave you alone, see you around Y/N” Steve stated, beginning to walk away.
“See you around Steve,” at that Steve walked away allowing you to return to your book.
——
Steve POV
“What the hell man!” Dustin yelled in Steve’s face.
“What in the world are you taking about?” Steve answered in a confused tone.
“Oh you know what I’m talking about, stay away from my woman!” He continued yelling.
“What- who is your woman?” Steve replied, still very confused.
“You know who!”
“if I knew why would I be asking?!?” Steve yelled this time.
“Y/N!”
“Awwww someone’s got a crush!” Steve chided and fully opened the door to let Dustin inside

The Tempest
I started my reading list with The Tempest because it’s the first one in my copy of The Complete Works. It’s also a little bit poignant because Tempest is one of those plays that People believe “means” something about Shakespeare (or, as he will be colloquially referred to on this blog, Billy Shakes). It was probably one of his last plays, and because it’s about an old man giving up his craft, People say that it is about Shakespeare giving up The Theatre.
I don’t know about all that. What I do know that Shakespeare had daughters, and that the way he wrote father-daughter relationships is very particular and interesting. However, using his plays to try and expose truths about the playwright can be really unproductive. I’ve tried it and it’s hard and usually wrong. That being said, the plot is pretty wild.
[what follows is a plot summary. for hasty, last minute thoughts, skip to the end.]
Act One
Surprise! It’s about a tempest! We open in Act 1 with a storm, and a ship caught in the fustercluck.
The Boatswain and Shipmaster are like, “Nooo!” and the passengers are like, “Please God, I don’t want to die at sea! I want to die on land!” (1.1.63-65)
These passengers are: Alonso, the King of Naples, his brother Sebastian, his son Ferdinand,  his counsellor Gonzalo, and Antonio, the Duke of Milan. Basically, the who’s who of Italy.
After this expository storm scene, we jump to a nearby island to meet our protagonists, Prospero (old, weird, presumably funky smelling), and his daughter, Miranda (young, nubile). Also, Miranda is the only female character in the play, which means we’re off to a really great start of continually failing the Bechdel test.
“Papa,” Miranda says, probably. “What is up with this freaky storm? Is that a shipwreck over there? Also, who am I?” (1.2)* (See notes at the bottom re: Miranda’s questions, memory, and this entire exchange.)
Here’s the deal: Miranda is fifteen, and has never met anyone other than Prospero, her father, or Caliban, the dude he keeps chained up in a cave for reasons that will become clear (but make that fact no less alarming).
Prospero, on today of all days, decides to be honest with Miranda about his past and her identity. This is a classic Billy Shakes move: exposing the noble lineage of a character to move the plot along. The sad tragic backstory is this: [cue violins]
Prospero used to be the Duke of Milan. Antonio is his evil, scheming, usurping brother. (Gasp!) Back when Miranda was a toddler, Prospero spent all his time reading magic books, and his brother was like, “I should be the duke!” King Alonso was in on it as well, and they shoved Prospero and Miranda on a boat and left them out at sea. Gonzalo gave them food, clothes, and water, but more importantly, the magic books! (Thanks, Gonzalo.) They eventually made it to The Island, where Prospero was like, “Chill,” and set up camp for the rest of time. (1.2.36-173) (It’s a long story.)
So the storm is Prospero’s revenge. He’s gonna really make life hard for the guys on the boat. (1.2.180). Miranda tries to ask another question, but her dad spells her to sleep instead, naturally.
This is where we meet Tempest’s real MVP: the spirit Ariel. Unfortunately, we don’t get to see him in action just yet. Instead we hear his tragic backstory. [Violins again, please.]
Before Prospero came to the island, it was ruled over by an evil witch named Sycorax. (Notice how men who practise magic are good magicians and women who practise magic are evil witches? Yeah, that’s a thing.) Prospero killed Sycorax, freed Ariel from the tree he was captive in, and then immediately enslaved him again. (1.2.257-293)
Prospero has promised Ariel that he will free him, as long as he follows through with the plan to separate, torment, and punish the shipwreck victims. Ariel’s like, “Already on it, boss.” And he flies away. (1.2.300)
When Miranda wakes, they go visit Caliban, Sycorax’s son! Wild. He collects their firewood and complains about it, mostly.
Meanwhile, Ariel has found Prince Ferdinand and is luring him in with sweet music. Miranda, who has never seen a man who is not a) super old or b) horribly disfigured, immediately falls madly in love with him on sight. Too bad, so sad, Prospero locks him up.
Act Two
We open on Antonio and Sebastian, who – I’m not gonna lie – I have always gotten a weird evil lovers vibe from. Is that just me? Probably.
They put their heads together and decide to kill the king, who is super bummed out because he thinks his son is dead. So if he dies, then Sebastian would be the new King of Naples! And Antonio would be the Duke of Milan and they could have slumber parties! Flawless plan. But as they go to behead the sleeping men, Gonzalo wakes up.
“Hey guys, what are those swords for?” he asks.
“Uh… we heard a monster?” they say, you know, like liars.
They don’t know how right they are, as we cut to
Caliban, who is chopping wood (naturally) and starts to soliloquize on how much he hates Prospero, which is pretty understandable. I mean, a guy comes and kills your mother, steals the land you grew up on and were destined to inherit, and then enslaves you? That’s a huge bummer.
Enter Trinculo, the court jester, who was also in the shipwreck. The scene that follows is slapstick AF, providing a much needed break in the action of Slavery this and Drowned Souls that. He and Caliban end up under the same cloak for shelter from the storm, and Trinculo says, “Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows!” (2.2.42.)
Too true, Trinculo. Too true.
Another survivor, the butler Stephano, rocks up, only he has a whole lot of wine with him. Get in, buddy. He thinks that Caliban and Trinculo look like a weird beast, and decides the best course of action is to feed it the rest of the wine. Caliban gets smashed, immediately. Then Trinculo pops out and says, “Stephano, buddy! It’s me!” Happy friends are reunited, and now have a drunk, pliable, and desperate Caliban believing that they are gods and that wine is divine nectar, and that they’ll be able to kill Prospero! Sounds logical.
Act Three
Because there’s not much to do on an island populated by three people, Ferdinand is the new Caliban and is in charge of woodcutting. He waxes poetic about how the work is hard, but his love for Miranda makes it all okay. (i.e. “This work is hard, but I am harder, eh-hey!”) (3.1.1-15)
It’s cool though because it’s totally mutual. Prospero isn’t too keen on it, and is spying on them from a distance like the creepy, overprotective father he most certainly is. He’s conflicted because Miranda has never been happier, but also his baby girl is growing up! [violins, again]
The important thing about this scene, I think, is the language about servitude. We’ve seen a whole lot of different kinds of servitude in the play so far - mostly, you know, involuntary. Miranda and Ferdinand exchange willing, voluntary vows, declaring their love for and service to each other. (See, kids? Love is a prison.)
Meanwhile, on another part of the island, Stephano and Trinculo are getting Caliban even drunker.
More importantly, Ariel comes in, invisible to them, and plays them some kickass tunes on his pipe. This is where one of the best known passages from the play comes from.
Caliban
Be not afeard. The isle is full of noises, Sounds, and sweet airs, that give delight, and hurt not. Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments Will hum about mine ears; and sometime voices, That, if I then had wak’d after a long sleep, Will make me sleep again; and then, in dreaming The clouds methought would open and show riches Ready to drop upon me, that, when I wak’d, I cried to dream again.
(3.2.130-137)
I love this part because this is where we finally start seeing the island for what it is: a haunted fairytale world. Caliban, who’s lived there all his life, doesn’t know what the noises are, or even the spirits that make them. His connection to the island is so innate and deep that he doesn’t question this mystery, just accepts it. It’s *clenches fist* so beautiful.
Back with the merry group of Italian Nobles, shit is about to get real. They’re busy complaining about their feet being sore, or whatever, and then… “solemn and strange music; and PROSPERO on the top, invisible.”
Strange shapes enter the stage with a banquet. Sebastian is like, “Cool, I believe in unicorns and fairies now, this is absolutely nucking futs.” (3.3.22)
Before the nobles can eat, though, the greatest ever stage direction I’ve ever read in my life.
Enter ARIEL, like a harpy; claps his wings upon the table; and, with a quaint device, the banquet vanishes.
First of all: enter Ariel, like a harpy? Can you think of anything more beautiful and terrifying than seeing a giant bird-spirit with an enormous wingspan emerge from the air, slam its fists down in front of your face, and vanish everything there? This is why Ariel is my MVP. He’s just such a drama queen.
I’m also hugely fascinated by the “quaint device” situation, here. There’s a good chance my MA thesis will be on magic/witchcraft on stage. As Tempest is a late play, probably 1610-11, it was written and performed under King James, who was obsessed with witchcraft. Magic tricks weren’t just slight of hand, back in the day, they were fully, completely real. The audience, the actors, and the king all believed in the supernatural.
Anyway, Ariel makes this big speech about how he is a spirit of vengeance who is there to punish them for what they did to Prospero, before vanishing in thunder.
Act Four
“Sorry I, like, imprisoned you, or whatever,” Prospero says to Ferdinand. “But you can totally marry my daughter. As long as you don’t bone her until after the wedding. Or else I’ll do… something. Something magic and weird.” (4.1.1-23)
“Cool,” says Ferdinand.
Ariel, when Prospero asks, brings down the spirits/deities Iris, Ceres, and Juno to bless the union. Then some nymphs, then Reapers. Which reminds Prospero suddenly! Caliban, Stephano, and Trinculo were on their way to kill him! Yikes.
With the help of Ariel’s trusty invisibility cloak, they manage to spy on them, and then set dog/hound spirits on them, and scare them away. Too easy.
Act Five
Finally, Ariel is going to be set free! After god knows how many years stuck in a tree stump, and thirteen years at Prospero’s beck and call, he’s going to be set free!
Only no.
What proceeds is a super sad scene where Ariel, telling Prospero how the Merry Italians are faring (spoiler: not well), feels a deep tug on his ol’ sympathy wire. Or, rather, “Mine would, sir, were I human.” (5.1.19)
Who is the monster and who is the man? Huh? HUH?
While Ariel goes off to fetch the shipwreck victims, Prospero makes an awesome speech about how cool and powerful his magic is, and how, alas, he is going to give it up. Because he cannot be a wizard and a Duke, can he? Also, it seems to me that his main power was, you know, enslaving people and spirits who can do his bidding. Not exactly kosher.
Ariel returns with the Italians and Prospero finally confronts them. Of course, they’re like, “Are you real? I’ve seen so much crazy crap today I wouldn’t be surprised if you were a figment of my imagination.”
But no, he has a pulse, and he has aged, and he is real!
He confronts everyone, left and right. Sebastian, Antonio, Alonso - nobody is safe! (Except for Gonzalo who he’s chill with.)
He even gives them a twist by saying, “I’ve lost my daughter…” and while they’re like, “NO!” he says, “PSYCHE! I meant because she married the prince! Booyah!”
Meanwhile, Ariel repairs the ship, fills it with supplies, and sends the captain to pick everyone up.
“FREE ME!!!!” he seems to be screaming, through clenched teeth.
Caliban, Trinculo, and Stephano all emerge, in stolen clothes, reeking of wine and, probably, their own piss. Everyone heads back to the ship, bound for Milan.
But first - “My Ariel, chick / That is thy charge. Then to the elements / Be free, and fare thou well!”
Finally. Finally.
Epilogue.
To be fair to those who think Prospero is kinda sorta Billy Shakes himself, Prospero’s epilogue sounds a lot like an old man giving up his trade, there on the stage. In fact, he begs to be set free from it.
Really, it was Prospero who was the slave all along. A slave to his circumstances, his trade, his life. Heavyhanded? Yes. An attitude that maybe diminishes the suffering endured by the actual slaves in the story? Probably. But in the end, it’s Prospero who needs to be freed from the shackles of the play, of magic, of fury, a quest for revenge, and his life on the island.
What makes Prospero’s epilogue sound like a speech being given by Shakespeare is that he asks the audience for permission to step down: “As you from crimes would pardon’d be, / Let your indulgence set me free.” (19-20)
Only can the audience set him free - not the other characters. The epilogue happens for us, not for the sake of the plot on stage. It is our job to pardon Prospero for his crimes. Our job to let Shakespeare put down his pen, I guess.
My real interest in Tempest is, as I said, in the stagecraft of it, and the implications of performing, or re-enacting the supernatural on stage. I’ll likely think about this more when it comes to things like Macbeth, Midsummer, or any play with supernatural elements, like Hamlet.
Other fascinating points:
colonialism/land ownership
colonialism and language - (Caliban: “You taught me language, and my profit on’t Is I know how to curse. The red plague rid you For learning me your language!”)
that Ariel was freed from the stump implies that he was captive in the land. I’m sure there’s some kind of eco-criticism about this, somewhere, but I don’t know if I care enough about eco-criticism to follow it up
Memory
Antonio has convinced himself that he did not wrongfully usurp his brother, for instance.
Miranda cannot remember… anything? (See Kevin Ohi (2015), ‘Forgetting the Tempest’, in Dead Letters Sent: Queer Literary Transmission (pp. 49-66). University of Minnesota Press.)
The way in which Prospero constantly qualifies the story (1.2), asking her if she’s listening, if she’s paying attention, etc. implies that she might not be listening, that she perhaps can’t pay attention, that she might not remember. Despite knowing that the shipwreck victims are alive and safe, Miranda let’s Ferdinand believe that his father is dead - or, perhaps, she does not remember that Alonso is alive.
Caliban’s memory of his mother, of his island, of his childhood - it leads us to the question of who is the custodian of knowledge, of memory, for a place?
Performances and rituals
magic, marriage, masques (oh, i like the sound of that.)
And yeah. What a plot summary. Catch me never writing one again.
Things to accompany The Tempest:
Margaret Atwood’s Hag-Seed
The Little Mermaid and/or Pocahontas
Julie Taymor’s The Tempest (2010) where Helen Mirren plays Prospera.
“The Island: Come and See/The Landlord’s Daughter/You’ll Not Feel the Drowning” by The Decemberists.
