May I ask what the origin/inspiration for all your humanstuck names are? Big fan btw, very nice!

thanks for the question. let me first preface this by saying i know that some of these are a bit of a stretch. this is how my thought process worked when naming them. i know that some of them are simpler or less interesting than others.

arisa - spelled with the kanji (有沙), “have” and “sand”. sand in an hourglass represents time, her aspect.

maeda - doesn’t have any particular meaning that i thought of, it just sounded nice with her first name and was close enough to her original.

tavio - short for octavio, but everyone really just calls him by his nickname. octavio relates to the number eight, of course. he can never escape her :(

martínez - very common spanish last name. it’s derived from nitram, which is “martin” spelled backwards.

solomon-alexander - this really is his full name. he has two first names, keeping with his binary theme. it’s also a reference to the fandom joke of calling sollux “solluxander.”

carillo-perez - again, a double name. i like the way the double “l”s look.

kamesh - relates to lord krishna, who in turn is associated with leadership and compassion. these are also associated with karkat.

vanakar - it just sounded good to me phonetically in tandem with his first name, and plus it has the “kar” in it. his full name is a bit pokey, due to the harsh “k”s.

naipunya - associated with dexterity. it also has “nya” in it. i read somewhere that it also had an association with hunting, but i’m not certain of the validity of that source, since i didn’t see that much elsewhere.

lamba - also just sounded good with her first name. they kind of roll off the tongue, like a cat rolling on its back or perhaps playing with a ball. i like the “a” sounds.

khadijah - i’ve always thought this was a very graceful name. it’s also pretty heavily religious and feminine.

mariam - the same as maryam, but an alternate spelling. i thought it went better with her first name since they both have an “i” in them.

tessa - diminutive of theresa. i thought it sounded short and kinda playful.

perry - it wasn’t intentional, but this could be connected to perry mattfeld, who’s best known for playing a blind woman in “into the dark.” someone else pointed this out to me.

victoria - means “victory.” it’s pretty flashy, kind of “mean girl” sounding, and it still has that good “k” sound in there.

sadik - i thought it matched well. the “a”s in her first and last name make the same sound, and so do the “k”s.

ezequiel - meaning “strength of god.” can be likened to equius’s role as a lord english component, english being god in this case. it’s the portugeuse spelling, really just because i liked the “q”.

ziegler - sounded good, and it repeats the “ee” sound and the “l” sound from his first name.

gabriel - means “servant of god.” gamzee’s quite literally a servant of english.

macario - very similar in sound to makara.

edison - relating to thomas edison and eridan’s preoccupation with science. very similar to “eridan” in that it shares the beginning and end, as well as the same amount of syllables.

achari - also just kinda sounded nice.

fiona - i don’t really know how to explain it, but it sounded kind of “princessy” to me.

pierce - sounds cool. you could say a trident “pierces” things, but that’s kinda lame.

some of these might only make sense to me, sorry. a lot of them have to do with the pure sound of the word, which i’m not sure i articulated particularly well here. please let me know if i got the meaning wrong or if i’m misusing any of their names.

Irish History from Contemporary Sources (1509-1610) by Constantia Maxwell published 1923. Contains a nice collection of primary source quotes, but it sometimes modernizes the 16th c. English in ways that are detrimental to the accuracy, like changing 'cote' to 'coat'. The original text for many of them can be found on CELT, archive.org, or google books.

An Historical Essay on the Dress of the Ancient and Modern Irish By Joseph Cooper Walker published 1788. Makes admirable use of primary sources, but because of Walker's assumption that Irish dress didn't change for the entirety of the Middle Ages, it is significantly flawed in a lot of its conclusions. Mostly only useful now for historiography. I discussed the images in this book here.

Chapter 18: Dress and Personal Adornment from A Smaller Social History of Ancient Ireland by P. W. Joyce published 1906. Suffers from similar problems to An Historical Essay on the Dress of the Ancient and Modern Irish.

Consumption and Material Culture in Sixteenth-Century Ireland Susan Flavin's 2011 doctoral thesis. A valuable source on the kinds of materials that were available in 16th c Ireland.

A Descriptive Catalogue of the Antiquities in the Museum of the Royal Irish Academy Volumes 1 and 2 by William Wilde, published 1863. Obviously outdated, and some of Wilde's conclusions are wrong, because archaeologists didn't know how to date things in the 19th century, but his descriptions of the individual artifacts are worthwhile. Frustratingly, this is still the best catalog available to the public for the National Museum of Ireland Archaeology. Idk why the NMI doesn't have an online catalog, a lot museums do nowadays.

BRC Headcanon Full Names

I have another BRC ask to work on tonight, thus I figure I should post this now. So then, behold! A big ol’ list of full name headcanons!

Basically a continuation of this post I made a long while back. This covers pretty much all the major characters, at least the playable ones. Plus even specific crew members from the rival crews!

Some of these have specific meanings that I used for the particular character, others were just kind of more general vibes, like “Oh this sounds cool/cute/etc.” A few of these will have extra notes on why I picked particular given/family names, but otherwise just assume it was because I liked the sound of it! Went with mostly Dutch last names for most of these characters since, well, dialog in parts of the game imply New Amsterdam is still in the Netherlands, so that made it a bit easier when I couldn't think of anything else to try, y'know? :P

Also note, not everyone here has a middle name. Not everyone irl has one anyways! Also also, some of the Dutch last names may be in the format of “Van (something)” or “De (something”, so just wanted to point that out in case anyone might get confused and think Van/De is a middle name, lol

Starting with the main cast:

Tryce = Tristian Christoffel

Bel = Annabella Pieper

DJ Cyber = Cyrus Rafaël Nassau

Felix = Bernard Manfred Van Steen (I still maintain that Felix looks like his real name would be Bernard, lol)

Vinyl = Florence Zoë Hendriks (when she was a child, she would sometimes write it as “Hendrix” and try to convince people she was related to Jimi Hendrix; it worked more often than it probably should have)

Solace = Levi Smit

The five bonus BRC members:

Rave = Vanessa Yvonne Ziegler (A headcanon, note, her dad is a black German, and her mom is from the Dominican Republic! Since she has a bunch of lines in German, and at least two in Spanish (one in particular being specifically Dominican slang), so that’s how I’m handled this :P )

Mesh = Bassam Karimi (first name means “smiling” in Arabic, last name is derived from the given name Karim/Kareem, which in turn means something along the lines of "generous, noble" or “dignity”; my research into this yielded differing results, but this seems to be more or less the overall idea. Honestly think it both sounds nice and really suits him!)

Shine = Sol Bakker (“Sol” just means “sun” in Spanish and Portugese, basically the idea is she derived her street name from that!)

Rise = Josephine Katherina Thomas (She hates being called any sort of nickname for her first name. It’s either Rise or Josephine, that’s it)

Coil = Oscar Meijer (Fun fact, the English equivalent of Meijer is Meyer/Mayer. I genuinely did not intentionally make Coil’s real name to be a roundabout reference to the lunch meat, but now that I realize it, I’m definitely keeping it this way, loool)

Some others:

Rietveld = We know here full name is Irene Rietveld, but a bonus idea: the rest of BRC point out it’s a bit awkward for her to go by her real name as her street/writer name, so she eventually settles on Rivet as an alias! :D

Escher = Matthias Conrad Escher (Originally just Matthias, but then decided to make a reference to the actual M. C. Escher, “Yeah, my parents knew what they were doing.”; thanks to @slappels for the suggestion way back when!!)

My Devil Theory OCs! The season in parentheses is what in-game palette they correspond with.

Sai (spring) = Tomás Lucas Ortiz

Nunchaku (summer) = Roxanne Beverly Sullivan

Daishō (autumn) = Hiro Francisco Morikawa (first name using the character for “prosperous” (浩); last name using the characters for “forest” (森) and “river” (川). Not that he ever gets a chance to write them in Japanese characters anyways :P )

Now for DOT EXE! A repeat from the full DOT EXE headcanons I made a while back, but still including it here for convenience.

Cueball = Ernesto Alberto Visser (Dutch father and Italian-American mother; “Her side of the family were like, the conservative Italian-American types. The kind that makes an annoyingly big deal about celebrating Columbus Day.”; his first and middle name come from two different great grandfathers on his mom’s side)

Eight Ball = Frederik Visser (older half-brother to Cueball, they share the same dad)

Cinco (five ball) = César Hugo Raúl Garcia-Flores (last name got hyphenated when he moved to New Amsterdam while getting his papers in order and stuff; not sure if I ever clarified it in the original post, but in most (probably all?) Spanish-speaking countries, people have two last names, one from their father and the other from their mother. When moving to a country that doesn’t allow for two last names, some people end up forced to pick one or the other. Cinco went with just hyphenating it to be able to effectively keep both.)

Neun (nine ball) = Sebastián Montero Sebastian Jäger

Twoson (two ball) = Beau Driessen

Fourside (four ball) = Robin Zaal

Jūrō (ten ball) = Maximilien Théodore Perrault

Quatorze (fourteen ball) = Marie-Madeleine Lucille Perrault

And heck, the rest of the New Amsterdam crews too while I’m at it. Same as with DT and DE, the season in parentheses is the corresponding in-game palette for the playable rival character.

Flesh Prince = Ruben Vos (last name meaning fox, and apparently was/is a nickname for a clever person… or a person with red hair, lol)

Bill (spring) = Caspar Westenberg

Charles (summer) = Thomas Vogels

Michael (autumn) = Abraham Joël Admiraal

Larry (winter) = Lennard Van Herten

(For their street names besides the Prince, they’re named after famous basketball players, specifically from this list; Charles, Michael, and Larry are probably obvious, with Bill there’s at least two different Bills on that list lol)

Eclipse: (Street names come from constellations, I tried to go with more (relatively?) obscure ones for the names)

Vela (spring) = Sara Al-Ghazzawi

Aquila (summer) = Melissa Agnes Fortuin

Lyra (autumn) = Hannah De Klerk

Cassiopeia (winter) = Xandra Gemma Daalmans (given name is actually Alexandra, but she goes mostly by Xandra for her business)

Veronica (autumn) = Paula Prinsen (Paula is the feminine form of Paul, which in turn has roots in the Latin word Paulus which can mean humble. This is an intentionally ironic name choice for this character, lmao. Also Prinsen means “son of the Prince”, so this one is more in line with her haughty attitude)

Quantum (winter) = Esther Katja Hoedemaker (She goes by Kat as a nickname)

This next one only applies to my fanfic AU of “What if we take the postgame at face value and Red somehow became a separate person from both Felix and Faux”, but anyways:

Red = Russell Miles Van Steen (Picked the first and middle names himself, note that Russell just means “red” lol. He took on Felix’s last name since they see each other as brothers after a certain point. And it’s not like Red could come up with a better last name anyways. His middle name when paired with Felix’s middle name is a Miles Edgeworth reference :P )

I am not a psychiatrist and thus not qualified to diagnose people, but my laywoman's opinion is probably.

He definitely suffered from depression and suicidal thoughts, particularly in his younger years.

He wrote about these feelings at length in his diary and in letters to his girlfriend Freda Dudley Ward and equerry Godfrey Thomas. Just to give a small sampling...

In early 1917 he wrote in his diary:

"I feel quite ready to commit suicide and would if I didn't think it unfair on Papa." (Source: King Edward VIII by Philip Ziegler p. 66)

In May of 1919 he wrote to Freda:

"I just can't cheer up somehow darling, everything & still more the future does look so hopelessly black & I'm so hopelessly despondent about it all..." (Source: Letters from a Prince by Rupert Godfrey p. 147)

According to Dickie Mountbatten, on a long journey by shit to Australia David would "shut himself in his cabin for days, alone, face drawn, eyes brooding." (Source: King Edward VIII by Philip Ziegler p, 143)

You have to read between the lines more to deduce if he experienced periods of mania because he wasn't venting to people about that as he did with his depression, but there are definitely accounts suggesting manic behavior. During certain time periods he seemed to have an excessive amount of energy, including during his 1924 tour of the United States where he had an extremely packed schedule of engagements but still made time to stay up dancing and partying every night. There's also plenty of evidence he was prone to acting impulsively, and that he would start various projects with great enthusiasm only to later abandon them.

And while I don't think this speaks to any particular diagnosis it's also worth mentioning that most of the courtiers surrounding him during the abdication crisis believed he was "mad." Clive Wigram, a private secretary, said: "I did not think the King was normal, and this view was shared by my colleagues at Buckingham Palace. He might any day develop into a George III, and it was imperative to pass the Regency Bill as soon as possible, so that if necessary he could be certified." (Source: King Edward VIII by Philip Ziegler p. 239) Most of the other statements I've read from courtiers were equally vague as to what specifically convinced them, so it's hard to say to what extent it was due to David's genuine mental illness and to what extent it was just that they seemed to believe no sane man would want to marry Wallis Simpson.

What She Deserves

Toby Ziegler x OFC (Kaitlin Stone)

Rating/Warnings: Implied Domestic/Sexual Abuse, Some Depictions of Violence, Smut 18+

Summary: Kaitlin Stone works with CJ, Toby has loved her for eight years, since the beginning of the campaign trail. Kaitlin's abusive boyfriend is the only thing standing in his way from getting what he wants and giving her what she deserves.

Chapter 19

Toby understood why Kaitlin might have disliked drinking so much in the last few years, but he had seen her drunk a couple of times and she was always merry and up for a good laugh. He wouldn’t say it out loud just yet, but he did miss seeing her so carefree.

     The next morning CJ was suffering from a bad hangover, but Kaitlin seemed perfectly fine. He gave her a small smile when she walked past his office to talk to Sam but avoided her for the rest of the day.

     He couldn’t stop thinking about her and it was distracting him. The way she had told him about her conversation with Dr Whitmore, the fact that she was considering whether she had feelings for him as well, it was all swirling around his head over and over again.

     Toby dreamed about her often enough, about her confessing her own love for him, allowing him to kiss her, laughing with him, one dream even saw them married. He would have given so much to make that a reality. But in truth, she needed to figure things out for herself.

     He had now found himself at the point where he could see a life without the two of them together. Maybe it was for the best, maybe she should have fallen in love with someone else, someone who would treat her right. He had to be okay with it. But everything she said the day before had him igniting with hope, and he needed to reign it in before it took over his life.

     Christmas was approaching and he still hadn’t decided on what to get Kaitlin just yet, he had a few ideas, some were a little riskier than others, but he still wanted her to have something that meant something.

     ‘Toby.’ Leo shouted from the hallway. ‘My office.’

     This probably wasn’t good.

     The walk to Leo’s office was always nice because it sent him past Kaitlin’s, he glanced in and saw her rushing around packing her bag.

     ‘You going somewhere?’ Toby asked doubling back to her office.

     ‘What?’ She panted, still rushing around. ‘Ashley, I need the numbers before I leave!’ She yelled.

     ‘Where are you going?’ He said again, calmly, hoping it would slow her down.

     ‘Um, New York. Ashley!’ She called again. ‘CJ was supposed to go this morning to meet with a reporter who may or may not have a story about some women who tripped over the Presidents pen.’

     ‘The Presidents pen?’ Toby tried not to laugh.

     ‘Look, I really don’t have time to talk to you about the pen, I have numbers to look over with the environmental stuff that’s just come in, Josh is trying to get me to convince CJ to put out statement about some painting that was stolen last weekend from a museum that I can’t remember the name of, and now I have to get myself to New York to ask someone why they are writing a story about a woman tripping over the President's pen, that we don’t actually know for sure that he dropped.’ She inhaled suddenly, covering her face and letting the breath go.

     Toby shifted between his feet while she took her hands away from her face.

     ‘Is it okay to say that was kinda hot?’

     Kaitlin finally laughed and it warmed him.

     ‘Good luck in New York.’ He said, smiling. ‘Let me know when you get back, yeah?’

     ‘Okay.’ She was still laughing, shaking her head.

     Toby nodded, smiling to himself and leaving her in peace.

     He walked into Leo McGarry’s office and felt his body flood cold. The DA.

     ‘This is Toby Ziegler.’ Leo stood between the two men. ‘Toby this is John Cranston, the DA and Daniel Thomas’s old boss.’

     The DA held his hand out for Toby to shake, he hesitated but obliged because Leo looked like he was asking nicely.

     ‘It’s good to meet you, Toby.’ He said, he had a charm that was perfect for a DA, but Toby despised it.

     ‘To… what do I owe this… meeting?’ He replied, tightly.

     ‘I came here to speak to Miss Stone actually, but I was told she wasn’t even in town, so Leo said you would be the next best bet.’

     ‘Why did you want to meet with Miss Stone?’ Toby ignored the fact that Leo had put him in this position, he just wanted to know why the DA was standing in front of him.

     ‘I wanted to explain my office’s position,’ he started. ‘Concerning the death of Daniel Thomas. He was an exceptionally bright and daring young man who had a great future ahead of him, and these ridiculous charges against him should now be dropped.’

     ‘Ridiculous charges?’ Toby could feel his temper flaring. He knew himself far too well and a part of him hated himself for what he was about to do.

     ‘Well yes, she’s clearly very distraught since their terrible break up, but I don’t think soiling the memory of her long term lover is the right thing to do here.’ The DA was winding him up and Toby was ready to take his head off. ‘Did you ever see them together? They were a very happy and very wonderful couple-‘

     ‘What did she wear?’ Toby asked, calmly.

     ‘Excuse me?’

     ‘What did she wear?’ Toby repeated the question.

     ‘What does it matter?’

     Toby held his gaze and stepped up to the DA. ‘Every day she has worked in this office I have seen her wear turtlenecks, long sleeved jumpers and dark tights beneath her skirts, and that’s if she ever felt brave enough to wear a skirt.’ Toby felt his temper fuelling him, this was his forte, this was what he was good at. ‘Everyday I sat next to her in the press room watching a speech, spoken with her in an office, had lunch with our colleagues and friends. During those moments, I watched her temper her own movements to cover large bruises on her neck and arms. There was a day she limped into her office and didn’t leave for a cup of coffee even though she was exhausted. I know that because I went to her office and watched her struggle to stand having forgotten about whatever daily injury she was hiding, only to sit back down again and tell me she was fine.’ Toby took another breath. ‘A year ago, if you asked Kaitlin how things were with Dan, dropping it in casual conversation, she would retreat into herself, she would shake in terror at the mere mention of his name. This brilliant young woman who has the world at her feet, who can hold a room with fantastic words and ideas, a woman who is an integral part of your President's advisory team… she deserves to be given the world, and it still wouldn’t be enough for the things she suffered. And you dare to call him a lover. He was the exact opposite of that. Do you understand what I am saying?’

     ‘You’ve got some nerve-‘

     ‘No, I have an audio recording of your supposed best and brightest trying to murder his girlfriend because the President of the United States decided to take a stand and make a speech about domestic abuse.’

     ‘You don’t know that it was him on that recording-‘

     ‘I was the one who found her bleeding out on the kitchen floor.’ Toby stepped all the way into his space. ‘I used a torn, blue shirt that was ripped off of her during the struggle, to stop her dying… and you know something? I failed. She died on the operating table for two minutes. Your bright young man killed a woman that… that a lot of people here love and care for.’ Toby steadied himself, he almost showed far too much of himself and he couldn’t do that. ‘I would suggest you think very carefully about the next thing you say in front of myself and Leo Mcgarry. Your position is not as stable as you may believe it to be.’

     ‘Are you threatening me?’

     ‘I am.’ Toby didn’t hesitate. ‘But let me be clear: my threats and the way you feel about them, are nothing compared to the eight years she suffered with that animal.’ He dared him to say something else. ‘I assume I’m done here, Leo?’

     ‘Yeah, I think he gets the message.’ Leo nodded.

     Toby turned on his heel and left Leo’s office without another word. He watched Kaitlin rush out of her office and head towards the lobby, struggling with her bag and coat and the file she was carrying. He didn’t even hesitate for a second, before jogging over to her and gently taking her bag and adjusting her coat for her to slide into while she spoke with Ashley about New York.

     ‘Okay, just make sure that CJ has a copy,’ she said, still flustered as he adjusted her bag making it easier to carry. ‘And make sure you call if anything changes with Josh’s thing. Thanks Toby.’  She suddenly saw him and stopped. ‘Hey, you okay?’

     ‘Kaitlin.’ He stopped her. ‘Please get on the plane and find out what happened with the Presidents pen.’

     She rolled her eyes playfully and left, rushing out the door. He went with Ashley back to the office and asked her what Kaitlin was working on. He felt a need to do something for her, but what was escaping him.

Michael Myers

• This boy was very passionate about the Kiss band in his youth, so I wouldn't be surprised if such preferences still remained in the subcortex of his consciousness.

• An immortal classic, almost like Queen, so I can quite call it quite modern. Although later performers like Instasamka (it's russian singer, okay?) or Cardi B may very well confuse him.

• And are teenagers listening to this strange set of words now?

• Well, maybe he'll try to sort it out a little, or rather, he won't mind if you include some similar songs from your playlist, but he's clearly still stuck in his teenage phase.

• He will be very happy if there is a little rock on your list.

• In principle, he is not particularly picky. At least this strange music makes him think and briefly dulls the voices in his head. Michael can dutifully listen to this music, but if he really does not like the song, you will hear a dissatisfied chuckle or feel a pair of blue eyes on you, from one look of which the blood is covered with a dense crust of ice in your veins.

Jason Voorhees

• This cutie will definitely appreciate your musical taste in any of its manifestations.

• But still, it will be better if your music has a calmer character.

• I think he would like some melodies without words, calm and relaxing. Performers like In Love With a Ghost and Adrian Von Ziegler are quite suitable.

• Jason himself is quite reserved and calm, so with quiet music he will be much calmer. Rude songs can scare him or make him feel uncomfortable.

• But this boy is not against learning about modern art, if you really like it. Give him a little time and your player with headphones and in a good half hour he will tell you his opinion.

• This song is good for clearing the area from intruders, and this one is for your walks! The latter is more suitable for a rainy evening... And this one is okay, can I listen to it again?

• Tommy is clearly not one of the timid ones.

• Although he may well call some performers stupid or rude.

• This is a man who works a lot and hard, so suitable active music will benefit him, a working mood and all that.

• Set It Off explicitly for him.

• This man is a true connoisseur of art, so he will not mind understanding the modern meaning of the word.

• Your taste is very important to him in everything, from clothes to the decoration of your shared bedroom and meals. Do you particularly like this music? Honey, let Vincent paint this on canvas.

• He would really portray what he represents during the audition.

• Well, sometimes too loud modern music would cause him headaches, but Vincent is willing to be patient. Not to say that he is so old for such music. After all, he definitely listened to it on the victims' phones. Still, listening to what you suggested is much better.

Hannibal Lecter

• This man is in love with classical music, so it is unlikely that he will really like something from the modern repertoire. Hannibal is a very deep person and evaluates with great attention what he eats or listens to. After all, music directly affects our mood.

• His music collection is quite wide, you can play any of the records he likes. Although no TV or gramophone will replace the sound of a live game. Still, you can use it anytime, honey.

• Hannibal would be happy to cultivate in you the same sense of the subtle and beautiful, although he will not interfere with your musical taste. From time to time, he may even listen to something from your favorites.

• As I said, Hannibal is very careful about everything that gets into his body, including music, so whenever you get into his house, a distinct sound of Rigutto Bruno or Claude Debussy comes from the living room. Just a fabulous atmosphere.

Southbound – the southernmost record of Tylototriton (Amphibia, Caudata, Salamandridae) from the Central Highlands of Vietnam represents a new species

Abstract

A new species of the genus Tylototriton is described from Ngoc Linh Mountain, Kon Tum Province, in the Central Highlands of Vietnam based on integrative taxonomy, namely by combining molecular and morphological evidence.  Tylototriton ngoclinhensis sp. nov. differs from all other congeners based on morphological data, allopatric distribution, and molecular divergence. Tylototriton ngoclinhensis sp. nov. is restricted to evergreen montane forests near water bodies on Ngoc Linh Mountain. We suggest that the new species should be classified as Endangered (EN) in the IUCN Red List. This new important discovery represents the eighth Tylototriton taxon described from Vietnam, and at the same time constitutes the southernmost distributional record for the whole genus in Asia.

Do you like old synthpop? Then OHM: The early gurus of electronic music is something for you!!

The whole compilation is on Spotify(some songs missing) and YouTube (3 songs missing) and probably other sites too :) it consists of the most important early composers and pieces from many different places, time periods and styles.

Some pieces uses one of the first ever electronic musical instruments: the theremin! It was invented by soviet musician-physicst Leon Theremin around 1920, therefore the name. This instrument is space-controlled, so you play it by moving your hand around it, not really touching it. It looks really cool!

In the first track (CD:1), "Tchaikovsky: Valse Sentimentale" (2:08) 1977, Clara Rockmore, a true pioneer in space-controlled electronic music, plays the Theremin together with her sister Nadia Reisenberg, who plays piano. This piece is truly magnificent and strange-soundig :D Rockmore actually was Leon Thermins student and protégé in the beginning of her career!

Before this gets way too long I must tell about one of my favourites in CD:1, which is the 4th track: "Williams Mix" (5:42) 1952 by John Cage. ...... And at the end of it you can hear a long abd roaring applause, which is very much deserved, of course :D Chris Cutler (musician, composer) tells about this piece in the booklet included with the CD collection.

"Williams Mix" follows a score five hundred pages long, which has never been reproduced, each page made up of two ten-inch graphic sections. The tape is to be laid directly on the page, which is a pattern showing all the edits and the angles at which tape should be cut, as well as recipes for constructing the sounds each piece of tape should contain -Cutler, 2000

The score he's talking about (a piece of it pictured above, x) is a sort of pattern or guide for making the pieces of magnetic tape that was used, making it possible to split, splice and edit the sounds. Around 600 tracks of sounds from for example the country, the city, wind- and electronically produced sounds. (X) This took about a year and was absolutely groundbreaking work! More info here!

If you liked that one, "He Destroyed Her Image" (1:59) 1973 by Charles Dodge is also a mix of different sounds, but made with newer and more advanced technology, and it's far more melodious and, well, structured. It plays with words like a poem, and Dodge has the following to say about it (from the booklet, source below):

I'd never been able to write very effective vocal music, and here was an opportunity to make music with words. I was really attracted to that. It wasn't singing in the usual sense. It was making music out of the nature of speech itself. I've always liked humor and had an attraction to the bizarre, the surreal. These poems were almost dreamlike in their take on reality. So that made me feel at home somehow. -Dodge, 2000
