Edward’s Exploit
.
Here’s the final piece of the WIP I posted awhile back! This was for my electronic illustration class and the project was to make a movie poster in Illustrator and we got to choose whatever media we wanted so ofc I chose to do something from Thomas/RWS!

It's The Railway Series 79th Anniversary
Probably the most biblically accurate version of them, even having their correct wheel arrangements

"They say that on Halloween, the Ghost Engine returns to the Smelters looking for his lost whistle..."
I took some inspiration from my friend Stephen for this one, but man this was still always one of my favorites from season 6.

I think it's a pretty neat little visual through-line that in 3 out of 4 of the stories in Thomas the Tank Engine we see Thomas either approaching or going past this signal box and the associated signals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That box marks the approach to Vicarstown yard limits. That's just about the furthest point Thomas is usually allowed to go. So it's neat that a book all about Thomas wanting to go out and see the world is very consistent in showing the reader the point where the yard ends and the world begins.
We don't see this signal box in the fourth story, because by that point Thomas is at Wellsworth and not Vicarstown, but there is one change Dalby made to the original Payne illustrations that I kinda like, because it helps to complete this visual through-line.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this illustration above of Thomas traveling with the breakdown train, the Dalby version has added a signal (along with a few other minor details).
No signal box still, we are by now very much away from the big station and out into the countryside. But the addition of that one signal I take to mean that this scene, which previously could have been anywhere on the mainline, is now specifically the yard limits for Wellsworth. The illustration is also similarly framed to the previous ones set in Vicarstown, with the reader looking from behind Thomas as he moves out and away towards the open countryside.
So now this visual indicator of Thomas venturing out into the wider world is consistent through the entire book.

Is it too late for 1/1?
Have a Skarloey anyway!! Been a little unsure of what sort of TTTE content to draw recently, but I saw a BEAUTIFUL picture of Talyllyn on Alamy and decided to redraw it as Loey! It really helped me practice my shading. Such a beautiful engine.
Here's the photograph I was inspired from! ---> https://www.alamy.com/talyllyn-steam-saddle-tank-locomotive-showing-headboard-with-welsh-image150395349.html

[1952]
Before they could move, there was rumbling, and the rails quivered.
The fireman leapt from the cab. As he did so, the ballast slipped away, and the rails sagged and broke.
“Fire and Smoke!” Thomas coughed. The fireman sat up and rubbed his head.
The dust hadn’t even settled when more rumbling could be felt. Thomas’s eyes widened. The ground beneath his wheels opened like the maw of some massive, horrible beast to swallow him whole.
The tank engine let out a scream that could’ve been heard from the big station as he started to fall an impossible distance.
Thomas’s bufferbeam crumpled as he landed hard on rock and stones. The tank engine could only just see sunlight through the gaping hole far above him.
“T… Thomas…” A voice - one in the pit with him - croaked.
“R-Reginald?!”
“What… have you done…?” His fireman choked. A broken, bloodied man struggled out from beneath the warped cab and bunker.
“Well, Thomas.” Came a familiar, disappointed voice. “You’ve really screwed up this time.”
“Please, get me out! I won’t do it again!”
“I’m sorry, Thomas.” The controller’s words struck him like daggers. “We can’t lift you out with a crane. The ground’s not firm enough. Even Gordon couldn’t pull you out.”
“W-what?! No, please! You have to help me!!” Thomas began to hyperventilate, as mist formed in his eyes. His safety valve burst open, sending off a jet of steam.
“DON’T LEAVE ME HERE!!”

Mere seconds after the outburst, Thomas whistled with incongruous cheer — and brought back the first half of the rake humming.    He was merrily oblivious to Toby and Henrietta exchanging worried looks.
rereading Small World by @mean-scarlet-deceiver again and I'm having feelings. Oh, Thomas...

Presently, the light grew, two ribbons of track appeared ahead in the gloom."

a few days ago, I revived my years old hyperfixation. so what better way to keep it in memory than to make an AU based on it with my current special interest <-- has happened several times before
I present to you all: ttte atla AU! set in an era (or rather alternate universe) where the hundred year war didn't happen, the air nomads are still around, and the main conflict -- though it still came from the same source which is the fire nation -- is different now; which is a crazed nonbender scientist from the fire nation with a strong dislike for bending arts and having his own army of technology-boosted soldiers

'So, with the Fireman sanding carefully in front, the Driver gently opened the regulator.
"Come...on!" puffed Edward.'
My entry for the #JustLikeAwdry diorama challenge based off the story 'Edward's Exploit' in book no. 21: Main Line Engines!
I didn't think I'd even be able to take part in this challenge, but this year I decided 'Just Do It' and went full steam all month. I will be posting a video later going into more detail about how I made my diorama, but for now, I'm just happy I was able to participate at all!
And finished just in time, too!
