Of all the current Devil’s Minion writers your playlist is the one I want to see. Do you have one? If not, are there particular songs you’ve been listening into to while you write? The vibe of your prose with them is hypnotizing like the short story about them in the books, it’s impressive, and does your music also inform this choice if at all?

Intense question, anon. Fourteen-year-old me fucking hyperventilated after reading the DM chapter in Queen of the Damned (me, on the floor of my bedroom at 3am because I don’t want to get caught reading this book, staring dazed at the ceiling; me, now, three weeks ago, sitting shellshocked on the sofa after watching S1 and S2 over two days as a binge; me, over two of those weeks following the binge, rereading the first half of the Chronicles and starting to see double, tilt the prism, see what happens when the narratives are overlaid and blurred), and it still feels like that. Likely my prose turning out the way it is in these stories is about 90% my giddy teenage self having access to my adult self’s writing experience to finally write this beloved pairing without fear of litigious letters (IYKYK, my fellow elder Millennials in the fandom). I don’t often love film and TV adaptations of my favorite books, but I adore this show. It’s flawlessly transformative; its improvements only make the resonances and overlaps that much more meaningful. No notes.

However, I have been listening to the same small handful of songs on repeat for 6 days as I write these pieces. I imagine they are affecting my sense of scansion at points; my writing life didn’t begin with fiction, it began with years of poetry before I ever tried prose. These tracks are as meaningful to me as poems as they are songs. It’s as good a starting point for a playlist as any; I’ll keep adding and put it together on Spotify at some point.

This song was my entire first 72 hours of writing. I’m that Autistic weirdo who will listen to a single song on repeat for a month and think nothing of it. Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii being the nexus point of their love story from beginning to end in QotD, this is everything to me; I was never going to be able to write about the show incarnation of them without integrating this location and this imagery in the most reverent love letter I know how. This is why my series title for these stories is Caldera. Volcanic crater blowout if ever I saw one; I ran with it.

2. I Forget Where We Were - Ben Howard

Hello love, my invincible friend; hello, love, the thistle and the burr. For you, I have so many words—and I, I forget where we were. I haven’t known this song for all that long in the grand scheme, but it found me via Spotify shuffle in 2022 right after something awful happened. The longing in this song hinges on one of the lovers in it waking up to something they’ve forgotten about their relationship, something precious, and I’m thrilled to finally have a fandom application for it.

No excuse for this one; it does a great job of speaking for itself. Front-man Colin Meloy is one of my all-time favorite songwriters, and his work is frequently dark, creepy, and/or gothic enough in flavor that I could find a few more.

This cover of Tim Buckley’s folk masterpiece completely transforms the vibe of the song, and in the kind of way you need for this pairing. This one is at responsible for the events and imagery in my “Still Life with Sunken Treasure.”

I don’t think the Arabic justified to the correct side when I copied this, but the translation is very easy to find. I don’t speak Arabic, but honestly the English translation is dull compared to the beauty of this language. If you haven’t watched Only Lovers Left Alive, what the hell are you even doing with your vampire-loving, monster-fucking life? All the tracks on it have the right vibe for DM, really.

Hello Dungeon Archivist!

I have a question about death in dungeons.

You can be ressurected in any manmade dungeon, that's just a default. Thistle made certain people immortal, but that applies only to them and they are not known to anyone but the Laios party, right? So why does Mr Tensu talk about the death ban in our beloved dungeon as if its some great mystery, as if this dungeon was special? Is it because they found runes and hope to learn how to implement ressurection in other places or is it something else I missed?

Great question! My best guess is that it was a retcon about resurrection not being unique. Either that or Tansu is talking about the immortality spell in all dungeons? He does say that's what the elves are after but maybe it's just a bad guess because he doesn't have all the information about ancient magic.

it is pretty confusing isn't it, is he talking about thistle's curse on the golden kingdom citizens even tho he doesn't know them or the resurrection spell? I still think some amount of retcon + his misunderstanding of ancient magic

OHH MYRTLEPAW BELOVED... DELIGHT in how you draw them / their general vibe they're soso cute :3. I think he and Mistlekit should get to bond over similar names. Him and Bristleheart too maybe, in that they're in the nursery at the same time and Mistle is probably pretty lonely... Similar names former loner solidarity ! Admittedly all the basis I have for this is that, but I do think it'd be cute... Especially with Mistle having been left behind, the idea of him having some older cats with similar experiences (confident and charismatic, too! More likely to reach out...) as a support system charms me a lot.

. OH MY GOD I FORGOT THISTLE . SHE FITS NEAR PURRFECTLY AS WELL... Former kittypet, but I think there's still a similarity :} and through him, Boulderstep; Bristle's kits through him and the nursery in general, likely Bub through Myrtlepaw as another former loner if they get on well, so on...

(Bashful gesture) heheh, apawlogy, the thought of a kid all on his own in an intimidating new world finding bonds and solidarity with the cats around him enough to feel safe and secure there in them got me. He's imaginative, he probably spends a fair deal of time in his own head, I picture him as kind of quiet myself, but the thought of him going from spending nights staring up at the sky and wondering after his mom, hoping she'll come back for him, to hearing stories from Bristleheart (the truth stretched just a Little for the sake of a good story, commentated on by Night and Quail for as long as they can stay awake to listen), or about apprentice training from Myrtle (with his current injury, I can imagine a kinda cute little "haha, maybe our tails'll match soon" exchange), or from Thistle about her time adjusting to clan life, maybe even from Boulder about different clans, and so on...

(.AND BRISTLE AND MYRTLE MIGHT HAVE TIME TO BOND BC MYRTLE'S HAVING AN INJURY LOOKED AFTER!! Charismatic & confident >:D KAHAHAA...)

I wonder if he tries to think up stories about what she might be doing, adventures she could be going on, so dangerous she couldn't risk bringing him. Maybe someone nudged him towards it, some quiet conversation in which he bared his heart, looking for guidance - "What do you think she's doing now?" A way to keep her in his heart, without it hurting as much. He probably understands what actually happened, to some degree. Someday, if not now. (Personally, I concur with the thought that she gave him up because she knew she was going to die soon.) Still, the story persists... She might end up more a character than a memory, at some point, but sometimes that's how things happen. He keeps her with him. I think he might write stories if he were a person. Maybe he'll tell them to some kit himself, someday...

ANYWAY!!! MISC THOUGHTS. I think Bristleheart is probably pretty respectable as a medic, just divorced from the holy aspect that clan cats associate with the role. Maybe as a loner, he had to focus more on prevention than treatment - likely limited stores of herbs if any, less cats to have to care for, therefore more of a "take advantage of what you have/can find when you need, before things get worse" approach. It's impractical for a clan of so many cats to have each cat have some travelling herbs occasionally (or so, vague example) in the months they know sickness is more likely (to bolster their immune systems, or so), but not so bad an idea when you're just taking care of your kittens, or giving some cat who came to see you and herb and advice, you know? He'd probably have to relearn some things in a clan setting, but I think he'd contribute good, new ideas just as surely. Sunwish had to learn everything from scratch, after all - she knew a lot, by the end, and definitely enough to keep the clan afloat for a long while, but she didn't know every plant around the area! Certainly not those beyond the clan's borders. I think Bristle's knowledge certainly won't rival it - there's bound to be overlap, after all, and Fallenclan's medicine cats have figured out a lot - but it'll be a definitely handy addition! A new perspective... As far as character goes, I think he's pretty respectable. Some combination of "fake it til you make it" and genuinely just being sure in what he does. He does what he does well. (SIDENOTE: HIS FANGS AND HIS KITTENS HAVING ONE EACH ARE REALLY, REALLY CUTE...) And I think his kits have inherited that, a little! They don't really have a reason to believe things won't work out, because he's been doing all he can to make sure they do. He seems reliable to me.

Myrtlepaw... I think they're cute <3 a little unsure of things, but he's finding his feet okay, being charismatic probably doesn't hurt. I'll have to wait a see a little more of what they're like! :3

(BONUS: If Bub DID get sort of close with Mistle through Myrtle it is very very cute to me to consider him reflecting on it as practice if him and Willow ever have kits.) (. If they have had kits and I have somehow fully forgotten I am So Sorry,)

As for fic planning...it depends on the fic for me, really.

Sometimes I fly by the seat of my pants with like. One (1) line of notes. One time I literally woke up in the dead of the night with an ENTIRE fic planned out in my head and frantically typed it into my mp3 player's calendar and the next day wrote it all out and posted it. (Fic in question was My (Un)Actions Haunt Me)

Other times it's...

When it comes to splitting up chapters, I've had more practice with that in the fic I cowrite with Lolling - Burning Thistles. We don't pay attention to how long the chapter is, we decide that if there's a natural ending, then that's where we end the chapter. Sometimes this results in a chapter with four different POVs with like 25 pages each XD Other times it's a single POV that'll probably be like...10?

Lolling actually introduced me to typing out my notes and splitting up scenes/chapters that way - really helped with getting my thoughts straight.

^That has also really helped with my Hunger Games AU. It's a fic with LOTS of planning needed, and making a complete outline for it is a saving grace XD

Though with me it's never "complete" because my notes are the barebones of the fic. The flesh gets put on when I actually write it.

For instance, I hastily reworked the second chapter of HG AU to flesh out the family dynamics of Apollo's family - including Phoebe, Asteria, Perses, and Hecate.

3. which episode wrecks your emotions the most?

FUCK that is such a hard question cause like...a lot of them. but honestly, bastogne just fills me with so many different emotions?? there's something about the stark juxtposition of that episode compared to the relatively colorful episodes in holland - we go from these purple and yellow fields of thistle and yarrow to the stark monochrome of a freezing hell in basically no time, and you can feel the creeping dread slowly consume you, almost like a kind of hypothermia

i also think that there's something so visceral about focusing on the deteriorating health of the company - not just the physical health, but the mental toll as well. its easy to think about things like gun shots and mortar shells, but seeing the slow misery absolutely guts me. joe's trench foot, bill's uti, babe's cough... and just the overwhelming sense of grief. all the things that gene, our absolute goddamn beloved, feels so responsible and no matter what he does, there's just...nothing he can do.

but even with no supplies, no coat, no morphine, no goddamn scissors - he still tries. he still runs into the fire, takes the boots off a corpse, gives away the precious piece of chocolate. because he is a medic and thats what he does.

(bonus fun fact: the first time i watched band of brothers, i was in undergrad - where i was studying to be an emergency room doctor! my path ended up going a different direction, but that drive and desire to just...help, is something i've always resonated with. especially with gene. so maybe im biased a bit 😅)

FUCK anyways that was a lot longer than i meant it to be but!!! this episode!!!!! kills me!!!!!!!

8. when did you first watch the show?

LOL didn't even realize this was the next question when i mentioned it above!! but yeah, funny story, my ex introduced me to this show?? we were in college (this was about 7ish years ago?) and he knew i loved history - particularly war/political media - and thought i would enjoy it!! anyways, we binged it over a few days, and i super quickly became obsessed.

although, i remember him like? spoiling things for me while watching and it pissed me off?? like he told me immediately after the battle of the island that it was dick's last time in combat, before even sink promoting him and i was like ??? im sorry??? so yeah, 0 out of fucking 10 harry (not welsh, my beloved) 😠

aaaanyways my love for the show definitely lasted longer than my love for him, let's just say that 😅

12. which aspect of the show shocked you the most when you found out it wasn’t true?

okay okay so i feel like blithe is the easy answer, but honestly....

the fucking betrayal i felt when i found out that speirs' tertius (terseus?) bit just...doesnt make any fucking sense

i think i was trying to research it for my immortal soldier!alton more story (cause, uh, fun fact - speirs is definitely also an immortal soldier in that au) and i wanted to get the exact time period that tertius was alive right for some plotting

turns out, tertius DOESNT FUCKING EXIST

not only that, but like, little of that whole speech makes sense - for example, mentioning "carthaginian prisoners" implies one of the punic wars, but centurions weren't a thing until?? like 50 years after the end of the last punic war?? so he's just?? making shit up???

anyways it absolutely broke me cause i was so in love with the idea of speirs just being this big history nerd and classics fan and it turns out he's just that finance bro in the back of the lecture who says things so confidently everyone automatically believes them, even if they're just talking out of their ass 😭😭

although it cemented the fact that speirs would definitely have been a lax bro, tell me im wrong

13. have you read any of the books the real life people wrote about their time in easy company? if so, which ones?

i know i know okay but i am SO BAD at just!! sitting down and reading a book!!! it's on my list i promise

but yeah i have: biggest brother, malarkey's book, and bill & babe's book. the bill & babe book has been my favorite so far, i've read the most of it and i LOVE their different perspectives and sense of personality through it!! so much!!

(bonus fun fact: i got the bill & babe book while visiting some friends over the holidays. we went into a bookstore and i didn't think i'd get anything, buuuuut i figured i'd take a look around anyways. i'd been looking for a copy of bill & babe's book, and hadn't found one at my fav bookstore back home. well, just in case, i found myself looking at the ww2 history section....and there it was. one, single, last copy of brothers in battle, best of friends.

My thoughts

9/10, definitely much better than the second one. Too much abelistic pity, though, so a point removed. I don't have any complaints for this book aside from that, really. Spottedleaf was mildly less prevelant this time, which is good. Tigerclaw's evil reveal and exit were cool, and silverstream's death hurt me way more than i thought it would. Overall, good.

Good Friday Was Not a Mistake

Today is Good Friday, the day that we remember (and celebrate) the death of Jesus on the cross of Calvary. Though Jesus died on a particular day (the Friday of Passover week in Jerusalem), and at a particular time (he was crucified around 9am and died around 3pm), this was ordained by the Father and prepared before creation even existed.

According to the Definite Plan of God

In Peter's first sermon on the day of Pentecost, standing among the very people who demanded Jesus be crucified (and witnesses of his death and resurrection), he said, “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men” (Acts 2:22-23).

Peter is saying, "you crucified and killed him, but this was all according to God's definite plan and foreknowledge." From the foundation of the world, God had already prepared creation for the cross. 

From Creation to the Cross

On the third day of creation, as the plants were created, God knew that one of these plants--a tree in particular--would be used one day for evil in the hands of wicked men who would crucify his one and only Son.

On the fourth day of creation, when God created the stars and other heavenly bodies that would determine signs and seasons and days and years, he knew that one of the signs would be that the Messiah would be born in the town of Bethlehem.

On that sixth day, when God created Adam, he knew that in his treacherous rebellion, man would fall and sin would enter the world and mar his creation, and that from his own offspring One would be born who would crush the serpent's head even as his own body was bruised (Gen 3:15).

When God cursed the ground because of Adam, one of the results was that thorns and thistles would grow. In God's predetermination, he knew that one day these thorns produced by the Fall would be twisted together and used to pierce the forehead of his beloved Son who would bear our sin upon himself as he hung on the cross.

Answers in Genesis says, "Think about this: before the universe was created, before time existed, before man was created, God knew that we (in Adam) would sin. He knew we would rebel against our Creator. And in the wisdom and love of God, in eternity, He predetermined a plan so that we could receive a free gift of salvation. In eternity, God planned for the Son of God to step into history to provide the ultimate sacrifice—the sinless Son of God would suffer sin’s penalty of death, be raised from the dead, thus providing a way of salvation. Hebrews 10:10 declares: “By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all”[1].

The Implications

The cross was not a mistake. The cross was not an accident. The cross was predetermined from the foundation of the world. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son. God was sovereign over Christ’s suffering, and he is sovereign over our lives as well. The One who created all things also knit you together in your mother's womb, and knows you. Will you receive him? Will you turn from your sins and trust him? Will you place your faith in the finished work of Christ on your behalf? For those who have, this is a Good Friday indeed!
