KH4 Challenge Day 5: A wish/want
Idk if this would work and I don’t anticipate it happening, but. Playable Destiny trio. Like all three of them. We play Sora working with Strelitzia (and Yozora?). We play Riku looking for Sora in Quadratum. And we play Kairi traveling with Donald and Goofy as they search for more information about Sora. I wouldn’t want the character switches to be like DDD or BBS, I think a little more like the forced character switches in parts of KH3. Like you’re playing through Sora’s story, and then once you hit a certain plot point, it switches you to Kairi. Then once you finish a certain Kairi plot point, it switches you to Riku. And the switches happen over and over again, so you get plenty of time with each character and plenty of variation. And then maybe at the end. They reunite. And you can choose which one you’re playing with the other two as your party members ;-;

Happy birthday dearest Void! Since I’m broke AF, I would like to offer you some fic reccs as presents! I hope you don’t mind the Kingdom Hearts fics, I thought you might be interested in these. Totally fine if you’re not though, no pressure!
Naruto:
isn’t it poetic that the sky is what we leave behind? by kirpy https://archiveofourown.org/works/36331276/chapters/90575314 (mostly features Kakashi learning about his clan’s history and culture, which is based off of the Norse myth of Fenrir which is pretty awesome)
sabotage by stirringwinds https://archiveofourown.org/works/16439483 (In which Itatchi has a bit of a mental breakdown and spills the beans about the mission he’s been given to kill his clan to Kakashi. Which is not going to happen on Kakashi’s watch)
The Fox and the Hound by WyrmFood https://archiveofourown.org/works/30301365/chapters/74685978 (Kakashi decides he’s not going to let his past or the council keep him away from Naruto after one too many instances of Naruto being abused by the orphanage feat. Orochimaru being Kakashi’s mama)
The Jinchuuriki Nine (and Saving the World) by LesbianOzoneLizard https://archiveofourown.org/works/35945257/chapters/89614636 (The rookie 9 all time travel back to their genin days. How? Because they’ve all been turned into jinchuuriki of course. Naturally they’re going to change quite a bit)
Hawthorn Bakes the Sweetest Bread by QuinsValoria https://archiveofourown.org/works/27457198/chapters/67126525 (Naruto has mokuton and is pretty much raised by his ANBU guard. Sweet and fluffy)
Kingdom Hearts:
A Shadow, a Light, and a Sky verse by UnknownUnseenUnheard https://archiveofourown.org/series/2419987 (in which Ventus is much more active after taking refuge in Sora’s heart and Vanitas is there too; Sora immediately adopts the two as his older brothers)
(i don’t need you to) Worry for Me by Cygna_hime https://archiveofourown.org/works/501160/chapters/879821 (Explores Vanitas’s time as Xehanort’s apprentice and his trauma because of it)
deadlock by orphan_account https://archiveofourown.org/works/18086636/chapters/42751559 (Bit of a role swap AU where Vanitas is the one initially healed by Sora instead of Ventus. Technically a Sora/Vanitas fic, but they’ve only interacted twice(?) I believe so no shipping just yet)
the language of unborn stars by llien https://archiveofourown.org/works/33263368 (more of a character and relationship study between Sora and Vanitas. Romance is vague enough that it can be read more as qpr though which makes my aro heart happy; HIGHLY recommend)
Of Grilled Ducks and Painted Boats by PoltergeistPanda https://archiveofourown.org/works/31311527 (In which Donald has bad mouthed Sora one too many times so Riki and Kairi decide to do something about it. Mentioned/implied SoRiKai but not the focus)
Oh thank you darling!!

💜 💬
💜- top 3 favorite lines (I write a lot and it doesn't make much sense as just three sentences so they're gonna be excerpts instead.)
1). From Fictitious Data (Soriku / Sorepliku Data Battle)
“I failed you, Riku. You got hurt and I didn’t protect you. I’m such a bad friend and you don’t deserve that.”
Dark Riku’s mouth fell open in shock, completely at a loss of what to do. He didn’t want this, for Sora to be sad. He just wanted him to know he was hurting, and it wasn’t even Sora’s fault, not entirely at least. Why was he even mad in the first place? It seemed so important at the time, and now he couldn’t even remember. Was none of the pain he caused, both to others and himself, worth it in the end? Had he made a mistake?
“Sora.” His voice came out grovely, rough from the overuse and the screaming, but he ignored it.
Sora sniffled and his voice broke and shook as he spoke but he didn’t care, he had to get it out. “I’ve gone over it so many times in my head. Those few weeks, months even, before the islands fell. I try to remember as much as I can and I know there’s some stuff I’m missing but nothing I remember was bad. We were happy. You, me, Kairi. We made up stories about far away worlds before we even had our plan for the raft and we played games and had sleepovers. You were so happy, we both were, so I can’t figure out what happened. Was it me? Did I do something wrong? Did I force you to the darkness? Riku, I’m so sorry. Whatever I did to you to make this happen to you, I’m so sorry .”
Sora couldn’t hold it in anymore and he completely crumbled, falling onto his bottom and hiding his face in his knees. He sobbed and cried and choked and all Dark Riku could do was sit there, helpless to his friend.
Sora spoke of these moments as if they were ancient history, so far off in his memory that the pain they caused was no longer immediate but instead had become a part of who he was, shaping his future and life without being able to be fixed or undone, but for Dark RIku these moments were fresh. Recent. What had been over three years for Sora was hardly even a few months ago to him. The disconnect between their experiences was startling to Dark Riku, and yet their level of pain was still the same. Just like how deeply Riku’s hurt carved itself into his heart and gave him a painful, open wound, Sora’s pain had scabbed and scarred and was still tender to the touch and difficult to reel in. Dark Riku, no, Riku , had caused this and the boy could only sit there in horror as he watched his friend weep over the things he had done.
2). From A Chance To Say Goodbye (Sora & Winnie the Pooh)
Pooh looked up at Sora and smiled, his other squishy paw coming up to his chest, right over his heart. “Do you remember what you told me, Sora? It seems so long ago now, but I remember it well.”
Sora sniffled, wiping tears away from his cheeks. “What did I tell you, Pooh?”
“You said that you would always be with me, right here.” The bear looked down at his heart in emphasis before looking at Sora again. “And that’s still true, isn’t it, Sora?”
Sora smiled and leaned into Pooh’s side, resting his head on top of the bear’s head. “Yeah, it is.”
“And I will be right there with you, too, Sora.” Pooh reached up to place his paw over where Sora’s heart was and Sora brought his hand over Pooh’s, holding it close to his chest. “I’d have to be, lest you forget about me.”
“I could never forget about you, Pooh Bear.”
Pooh smiled. “That’s good.” The two stayed with their hands on their hearts and leaning into each other until Sora pulled Pooh into a hug, bringing the little bear as close to him as he could, holding him tight.
“I’m really gonna miss you, Pooh.”
“I’ll miss you too, Sora. I miss you even right now.”
3). From Under the Same Night Sky (Sorikai)
“If you say so, Kairi,” Sora’s slightly haughty voice came. “I’ll remember that the next time you yell at me for eating the last of your cookie blasters.”
An arm came from behind Riku to poke at Sora’s side, making his facade fall as he complained and tried not to laugh.
“All these years and you still don’t know a girl’s cookies are not meant to be messed with? Tsk, tsk, Sora, I thought we raised you better than that.
“Raised?! I’m older than you by four months!”
“Semantics. Don’t touch my cookies, Sora.”
“Just for that I’m going to eat them all before you even get a chance.”
“Gasp! You wouldn’t.”
“Watch me.”
Their mindless jibes pulled laughter out of Riku who failed to conceal it, earning pouts from the both of them.
“Riku, tell Sora not to eat my cookies.”
“Riku, tell Kairi that cookies are meant to be shared with friends and also that I’m the older one here.”
“Oh, look, we’re here,” Riku remarked with an exaggerated, fake tone, slipping past them and into the house. Outside, Sora and Kairi looked at each other in disbelief before crashing in after Riku, making him laugh at them all over again.
Cookies forgotten, cold melted, unpleasant memories in the back of their mind, the trio made themselves cocoa and soon enough piled into Sora’s room, becoming a mess of bodies and blankets as they laid over each other in his bed.
💬- describe one of your completed works in three words
I'll let the summary do it for me: "Riku, truth or dare!"

destiny trio thoughts
i needed my third cup of coffee at FIVE PM for this one WHOOPS
i have many thoughts. bear with me
i love soriku bloggers so dearly. they are so correct and they are such good sleuths and they are so precious uwu. i really don’t think i could vibe with sokai blogs it would just be weird(TM) for me. but when i see sokai shit in the games i uwu because SORA IS SO PRECIOUS AND SHE MAKES HIM SO HAPPY AND THE BOYO IS GOOD HEEM DESERVE TO BE HAPPY UWU. my og otp for kingdom hearts was sokai because i was a dumb little girl who had a crush on sora (he was twice my age back then, now i am too close to twice his age and it’s O.O) and i naturally projected onto kairi so i wanted them to be canon.
now i am an adult and now that sokai is damn near canon i realize that sora DESERVES riku. he deserves a boy who has LEGITIMATELY sacrificed EVERYTHING for him. and riku deserves sora because he is fucking in love with sora and they are both obsessed with each other LET’S BE REAL but also sora deserves kairi. i mean HE’S IN LOVE WITH HER. and she loves him too. and ya know, riku didn’t only sacrifice everything for sora, he ORIGINALLY succumbed to the darkness because he thought it would help him save kairi. i think he really cares for her too. so like
porque no los dos?
i love sorikai so much i think they ALL LOVE EACH OTHER SO MUCH AND THEY SHOULD JUST HOLD HANDS AND KISS they should all THREE be together i really think it’s their destiny ~ uwu
whenever i see sorikai content it just feels so right. they deserve each other.
but with how much sokai has been forced, i just don’t see soriku being a thing. some soriku bloggers are like firm believers in soriku endgame and i just don’t believe it. sokai has been too heavily implied in the canon, i don’t care how much gay subtext there is, how much these boys are obsessed with eachother, i just don’t think soriku endgame is going to happen. i feel like personally, just with how BLATANT and OBVIOUS sora’s crush on kairi is, and how much sokai has been forced, i've pretty much accepted sokai endgame. but these soriku bloggers DO give me a little hope that sorikai endgame could be possible, though i just don’t think it’s very likely. these are just my thoughts, please feel free to yell at me or discuss civilly.
#sora kingdom hearts#kairi kingdom hearts#riku kingdom hearts#destiny trio#kingdom hearts#sorikai#this has been churning in my brain for days

This isn’t something I normally participate in, but, since I didn’t write much in June and shared hardly anything(something I plan to change in July if I can), I thought I should give some proof of (creative) life if anyone wants it.
Under the cut, a series of tiny excerpts, most more than six sentences, of different Kingdom Hearts pieces to be rescued from the limbo of “half finished chunk of something in a google doc.” Some of them belong to WIPs and some are from various other things started and then interrupted or....we’ll say set to a back burner.
All excerpts headed by a bolded header in the style of
Title of Piece This Belongs To (Brief description of what kind of fic that is in between parenthesis)
Advantage Rule (Isalea Modern AU. First Chapter Up On AO3. More Info There.)
"You lost or are you the new caulk?" The speaker didn't fit the typical profile of a tech professional, especially one that worked behind the scenes with the coders. Mid-fifties judging by the lines on his face with thinning blond hair so light you could hardly tell where some parts had gone silver combed to stick up as a compensation for where it threatened to recede and leather skin that said he'd worked outside in some decade past, paired with a southern accent that seemed stronger than it was with the effect added by the toothpick precariously balanced in the corner of his mouth. He'd rejected business attire in favor of cargo pants and a dark blue flight jacket that looked like they'd been bought in the last century, and the look in his eye was so fierce without prompting that Axel had to wonder if he was a failsafe for the air conditioning breaking down.
"Am I the what?"
"Caulk." The toothpick switched sides of the man's mouth with a roll of his bottom lip. "Fixing the leaks? The cybersecurity specialist? Axel Lea?" His impatience mounted by the moment. Working on the fourth floor would certainly be interesting.
"Yes, sir. That would be me." Axel tried to smooth the way with deference and the easy smile that rarely steered him wrong. "Does that make you...?"
"Cid Highwind. I'll be showing you the ropes. Now that you've seen fit to grace us with your presence." Cid continued to stare him down and Axel wasn't sure if he was supposed to apologize or bare his teeth and smack his chest like a gorilla to challenge the alpha.
Without False Hope ( First Chapter Up On AO3. More Info There. Akuroku KH/FFX crossover)
Axel was waiting for them, or it seemed that way at least and Roxas didn’t think himself vain for thinking so, when Roxas spotted the lanky redhead not jogging himself but leaning against a pole until he saw the Crusaders approaching and then falling in next to Roxas just behind Xion as she bellowed, "Young Crusaders gather 'round," the beginning of a call and response chant that the rest of them would answer with a promise to knock enemies back and stand their ground or an alternate about beating Sin beneath the ground if they were feeling
Axel finished the line a beat before the Crusaders would have, substituting his own words. "...Eager for Sin to put you in the ground." Roxas's heart, which had soared for a moment when Axel had come up beside him and dared to hope that Axel's first words would be a version of sorry or an invitation out somewhere without other people, took a sharp plummet to his toes then returned to his chest angry at being mocked.
Assorted grumbles and shouts showed many others felt the same way, but Xion seemed to take it in stride, sing-songing her own improvised lines that continued the cadence of the original chant without missing a beat, "Young civilian come to heckle and stare. What would you do if a fiend attacked and we weren't there?"
Axel near stumbled but recovered and let out a short bark that might have been a laugh he wasn't sure he was allowed without inviting training Crusaders to make him pay for it, afterward rumbling in an impressed tone, "You, I like,."
"You should. " Xion shot back and her casual tone alone was enough that everyone else in the formation knew Axel was an acceptable stranger even if he was rude, and that they should ignore the intrusion. "I'm not sure I like you back. Roxas has been mooning and it makes him impossible."
Guardian Force (Akuroku. Axel and Roxas in the next life, living as NPCs in the world of/during the story of FFVIII. Part of my eventual plan to show Axel and Roxas living out every Final Fantasy game. Unpublished/First chapter never completed because I decided on Without False Hope/a FFX crossover instead)
"You often talk to yourself?" an insolent lazy drawl came from somewhere to Axel's left and he turned, eyes narrowing to see a boy in a rumpled Balamb cadet uniform lying across the second highest step, book in hand, vibrant blue eyes, ice eyes like he'd junctioned Shiva right to his vision, trained on him over the spine.
"To my Guardian Force," Axel explained, though that seemed worse. Over six foot of height and lean muscle and the SeeD uniform Axel wore at least enough parts of for it to be vaguely recognizable that he belonged to the elite unit, all usually worked together enough that there was usually no reason to be embarrassed by anything he let slip out. Nobody would laugh even if Axel welcomed it.
"Thought you didn't like using Guardian Forces," the lounging student's voice was just as nonchalant as it was before, but his gaze was sharp, interested, and he spoke as if he knew Axel.
"Have we met?" Axel knocked the sole of his left boot against the side of his right as if scraping mud off the bottom. It wasn't odd for him to shift constantly even when mostly still, unless he was specifically called to stand at attention. There was an air of discomfort about the present action though, when taken with how jade eyes known for constant analysis on and off the battlefield, seemed attracted to the handrail of the steps rather than searching the face of the boy that had just spoken to him with familiarity. Axel's normally iron stomach soured immediately at the idea they had met and he'd forgotten, to the point he couldn't even bring himself to try and jog his recollection. All he could do was force out his least favorite question next to 'when did that happen?'
Lollipop (Soriku and Akuroku. College AU/Modern AU. Unpublished. Sora and Roxas in an acapella group because that was the only way I could work out how to get them to sing and do choreo for songs that get stuck in Shaky’s head, which was the Goal of the Day one day before I got distracted)
When Sora said he had a new idea for a piece for the CrescenDudes' next performance, Roxas had been more than happy to volunteer to work on the arrangement with him. Sora was great for ideas, large picture and little flourishes that made a song a show, and he was, hands down, who you wanted doing choreography, even if he tended to get carried away and not realize there weren't many others with the dance and movement background he had in their group, but he wasn't suited for the musical side of sculpting a piece. He'd sing what he was given and he'd stay on pitch doing it, but he had no idea to weave songs together to form a mashup that sounded natural and created the right feeling in a crowd, and he'd forget to accommodate for everyone's voices or go the opposite direction and try to highlight everyone and have twenty solos. So it was up to Roxas to take his vision from neat idea to reality, and he jumped at the chance. He'd do anything at this point to distract Sora from dragging him into wedding planning for a few days when that should be Riku’s job as the other groom.
Hourglass (Unpublished. Self-indulgent BBS Era--at least for this excerpt-- story about KH Squall/Leon and Seifer growing up in Radiant Garden and explaining how they got to be on separate planets and separate ages by the time KH1 rolls around. May be competed and posted to AO3 or just used as a base/record of headcanon for sprinkling backstory references in other pieces.)
Seifer challenged Lea and Isa to break back into the castle and come back with proof this time. He would have just called Lea a liar, but that would lead to Lea trying to fight him, which would lead to Isa trying to fight him, which would lead to Squall getting in the way, thinking Seifer couldn't handle a two on one fight with some chicken wusses. Then Squall would still try to sneak into the castle himself to see Ellone anyway--and she wasn’t in the castle in the first place...probably. Seifer would have to drag Squall’s ass out of there, and, if they got caught by the Royal Guard, then they’d be the next rumored prisoners in the basement. It was safer to make it be Lea and Isa's challenge.
Lea took the bait. Isa, surprisingly, added they were planning a return trip anyway. Squall shot Seifer a questioning look, which he ignored in favor of taunting Lea and sealing the deal, "I can't wait to see you two hobble in tomorrow after getting your asses beat by the Guard. Try not to hit your thick skulls on the flagstones when you get thrown out."
Drowning (Unfinished/unpublished. Placeholder name. Sorikai. Supposed to be for the Sorikai Summer Event. Prompt: Drowning. Long one shot about eight times one of the Destiny Trio has nearly drowned and then been saved by the others)
Their first prototype of a raft had fallen apart underneath them in open water, the ties that lashed the planks together having not been as securely tied as they could have been--the book on sailor's knots Sora had provided was a lot more obtuse than it had seemed at first, descriptions dense and picture demonstrations too sparse. Kairi and Sora each fared well, each grabbing onto a floating plank to drift a minute and orient themselves after being plunged into the water. Riku was less successful, being fixated on saving as many of the supplies Kairi and Sora had gathered (coconuts, mushrooms, and bottles of water mostly, though there had been a tackle box that Riku's father would kill him for losing if he had to go back and face him, and that was what Riku was primarily focused on) and exhausting his breath on too many dives in a row without recovery in between until he was lightheaded from not taking in enough air in his hasty gulps when he broke the surface and increasingly imprecise in where he chose to come out of the water until he hit his head on the bottom of the plank he was loading the recovered supplies onto and went down without resurfacing.
No Set Recipe (Unfinished/unpublished. Sorikai. Supposed to be for the Sorikai Summer Event. Prompt: Ice Cream. Kidfic. Sora’s mom is left with the job of explaining polyamory while making homemade ice cream with a group of five and six year olds.)
It was all Selphie's fault to start with, though if she was going to be ascribed the blame for the hurt feelings, she would have to be given credit for all that happened after, which Riku and Sora both agreed she did not deserve, even if Kairi was more magnanimous, so it became habit just to talk of the ice cream and the impact it had on their future. Still, the most accurate account begins with: one day when they were all young-- too young to even be allowed to swim in the water surrounding play island without an adult in the surf with them, if that gives perspective--Selphie, to everyone's surprise, scored the winning goal in the game of land-blitzball the group of them were playing in order to decide what game they would really spend the day playing, and chose, to absolutely nobody's surprise, house.
Everyone accepted their fate and divided into family units with minimal grumbling, phrasing which means that Wakka threw the blitzball into the sea and lost it forever when Jecht--the parent chaperone on play island that day who was five minutes away from falling asleep on the sand and typically didn't care what they did, unlike most parents who at least had restrictions about not hitting each other in the head with wooden swords or throwing sand, and was the favorite of the children for that attitude of freedom to make mistakes being a better teacher than rules--refused to go into the water after it.
Selphie, however, found a problem with Sora, Riku, and Kairi's family. Specifically, she didn't like that the family was Riku, Kairi, and Sora all together parenting a yellow coconut Kairi was trying to rock to sleep while Riku built him a bed out of sand and palm fronds and Sora cooked dinner for the household--a savoury stew of sticks, sand, and mushroom. She stood with pursed lips and hands on hips, and declared that their proud coconut son, Rekka, couldn't have all three of them for parents because that wasn't how things worked.
"Why not?" Sora asked with all the curiosity and innocence of a child.
Riku tried a more practical, solution based approach with, "Can we change the rules?"
Kairi was more direct and firm, her, "It does if I say so," leaving very little room to argue.

AUgust 9: royalty au
PROMPT THE NINTH: ROYALTY AU
aka “space royalty IN SPACE!!!” ft the kingdom hearts kids. I don’t know what I’m doing in kh except that certain people got me into it and I’ve been dabbling with a few other fics for it over the last month and I don’t know how to write any of these good good kids at all. so I smashed up destiny island trio with “crest of the stars” which I haven’t seen since 2009 so all of my memories of it are on the delightful worldbuilding. vaguely soriku or sorikai? I guess? what is kingdom hearts?
0o0o0o0o0o0
The Highwind hadn’t changed at all in the last three years, or however many rotations that translated to on Kingdom ships. Sora couldn’t restrain himself from running his hands over everything, his new haptic interface buzzing gently at his temples with every passing node and module. It would have itched if Sora weren’t practically leaping with excitement. This was the Highwind. He was done with training. And what’s more, he’d been recruited for this, so someone out there thought that he was ready. Maybe if he was lucky, he’d even run into--
“Sora?” a familiar voice said. “What are you doing here?”
He spun, his smile wide with delight, and practically sprinted down the corridor to bury the red-headed junior officer in a hug. “Kairi! I didn’t know you were stationed on the Highwind!”
His best friend grinned sheepishly, face flushed the same red as her hair as Sora set her back on her feet. They wore similar sleek space-ready black uniforms, but while Sora’s jacket was full-sleeved and trimmed with red insignia, Kairi’s tunic was sleeveless and her collar marked with two tiny silver stars--a lieutenant now, not even three rotations into her official serve. Sora would have to get her something as a present. Rose-gold interfaces wound around her wrists and up her arms, newer and much nicer than the ones she’d borrowed at the academy. Nicer even than Sora’s headpiece, which he just got as a graduation present from Donald. Jeez, the Highwind really did have it all. “I’m not surprised you slept through that announcement,” she said. “I heard you were barely awake enough for your own assignment, sleepyhead. Admiral Yen Sid was probably ready to have you court marshaled.”
“Yeah, well,” he said and scratched at the back of his neck. “I’m here now?”
Kairi’s smile grew to match Sora’s own. “You definitely are,” she said. “Have you been to your quarters yet? Or do you need a tour of the ship? Captain said we don’t launch for another rotation, so I can--”
“I’ve got this, don’t worry,” Sora said, and started down the corridor again.
She raised an eyebrow. “If you’re sure,” she said, and fell into step with him. For a minute, it was like they were back at the Academy, or even back on Destiny Island, striding along the edges of the ocean like they were in space and bouncing up and down in the lack of gravity. Sora hadn’t known about grav boots then.
Sora turned down the third corridor, following the spoke past the windows that looked out upon the twilit lights of Departure Station floating against nothing but a thousand thousand stars. “I was here before,” he said.
“Before we shipped out? That’s against protocol--even you know that.”
A really stupid rule, but one Sora had to follow if he wanted to be here. “No, before that. We haven’t even left dock yet! Before the Academy. It was after you and your family had to flee the Island, and I went looking for you and--”
Kairi blinked like Sora had hit her over the head with a practice sword. “No way,” she said. “You were here?”
“Yep!”
“On the Highwind?”
Sora crossed his arms with an annoyed harrumph. “Where else would I have been?” he said. “We found you while I was here.”
“I didn’t know it was the Highwind! I was kind of out of it, with the oxygen deprivation and the spacing and the kidnapping. I thought it was just...just the...” Kairi trailed off as she looked him up and down, taking in the haptic headpiece that wound through his chaotic hair and the red pilot’s insignia at his wrists and collar, and she put her head in her hands for a long exasperated sigh. “Oh, stars. No wonder the Kingdom Navy was so angry.”
Sora did remember more than a few expressions of shock when Yen Sid had announced where he was to be stationed. But he’d cared more about Donald and Goofy’s expressions of joy than some old farts. Or young farts. Farts who thought they were better than anyone else just because they had weird-colored hair. So most of the Academy, really. “They weren’t angry, just...not happy.”
“They’re pissed, Sora. But it’s not their choice to have two humans onboard the Highwind, not anymore.” Without checking to make sure that Sora was keeping up, Kairi squared her shoulders and picked up the pace with a grin that usually spelled pain, and lots of it. “You know, we’re almost at the flight deck. You wanted to meet the new CO, right?”
He had been going to the mess, but his stomach suddenly didn’t seem as important. He wanted to be on the Highwind because it was the best, but he also wanted to serve the person who had helped him save Kairi. He wanted to help. Not having King Mickey around felt...weird. Different. Like the air needed to be circulated a few dozen times. “What happened to Mick--I mean, the Rear Admiral?”
“The king handed over the ship to someone he trusted with his heart,” Kairi said.
That gave Sora a long moment of pause. “Should I know him?” he finally asked.
A muffled giggle came out from his friend’s mouth. “You have to meet the captain eventually. So I think you should meet him now.”
“Meet who?”
“Someone you trusted with your whole heart!”
Of all the times to be mysterious, she had to choose right this moment. “Kairiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii...”
“Come on, Sora!”
They made it to the bridge in what must have been record time, Sora’s books thudding heavily against the tiled floor. Other officers, their hair all colors of the rainbow, gave the two humans the side-eye as they raced along the corridors. Sora didn’t care. They’d have a chance to say hi later, to become friends, when he wasn’t in danger of falling behind Kairi. But she slowed down with just enough time to catch her breath, unable to stop Sora from his all-out sprint to the door. Without the magnets kicking in on his boots, he couldn’t quite stop himself before tumbling face-first into the sleek sides of the small bridge.
Normally Sora liked Kairi’s laughter--it reminded him of waves and summer storms and the Island--but right now it was turning his face as her hair. What a first impression. He did his best to jump to his feet and imitate a proper salute. “Ensign Pilot Sora, reporting for command, sir,” he said, looking anywhere but at the tall captain who was definitely staring at Sora and probably counting all of the ways that he could be sent back to the Academy.
Another laugh, much quieter than Kairi’s but absolutely cacophonous in Sora’s ears, echoed around the tiny command chamber, loud against the half-empty room. Sora’s heart ached with it, beating in time with a voice he hadn’t heard in years except in the rare crackly messages shipped from the other side of the system.
The captain’s hair was long and the color of stars, a rare color even among humanoid nobility in the Kingdom. His uniform, practically picture-perfect and sleek with silver lining, had a solid steel blade at his hip, a form of haptic device that responded less to physical touch like Sora’s or Kairi’s as much as pure will. Sora hadn’t seen one of those in use in years. Not since he’d last seen Riku frantically stabbing it around a ship, Sora at his side.
Riku smiled, a private little thing that lit his green eyes up brighter than a solar flare. “Still crashing into things you shouldn’t, right Sora?”
“It’s you, Riku,” Sora breathed. “Riku!”
One of the bridge officers actually squawked. “That’s the prince of the Seven Island Worlds, you insubordinate--”
Sora ignored them and all of the rules about propriety and princes and how no one is supposed to call the nobility by their names because that’s not how things are done Ensign Sora that the instructors had tried to drill into his head at the Academy, and threw his arms around his friend. Because once, long ago, Riku had promised that Sora could call him by name, and Sora won’t ever break a promise like that. “I thought I’d never see you again,” he said.
Even though it barely lasted a moment, Riku hugged him right back, tight and warm and just right. Sora missed that. He missed Riku. “Well, you promised you’d be my pilot when you were done,” Riku said a little self-consciously.
“And I am!” Sora said, and thrust a thumb at the pilot’s insignia emblazoned on his jacket. “That is why I’m here. Right?”
Riku laughed again, and Sora swore that his heart turned to molten gold right in his chest. “A captain can choose his crew."
“You chose Kairi?”
“Well, of course,” Riku said, glancing over the top of Sora’s head to the young woman. “She’s the best gunner in her class, and probably will be in the fleet in the next few cycles.”
“Thanks, Captain,” she said. Sora could tell she was trying to be miffed and ended up being pleased. Of course Riku would know how to make her feel welcome.
But that still left Sora.
As though hearing his thoughts, Riku poked him gently between the eyes. “And I chose you, Sora. So. Welcome aboard.”

The fact that the thumbnail of the Re: Mind trailer was of Sora and Kairi holding hands...
My frail sokai heart is soaring..
Oh wait, there is more!
Now I’m happily waiting for my wholesome Rikai, Sokai and Sorikai moments and for my girl to have a good adventure with her two boys.
I love those two goofballs together (Sora and Kairi), but I need the three of them being best friends. Or I would be happy with only Kairi and Riku moments, because that is lacking so much in the recent games.
So much Sokai and S*riku moments just make me crave Rikai content even more..

Ship bias? (For Riku and/or Ava?)
Ship Bias || accepting
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I’m gonna do both because i lov’em both. Gotta put it under readmore because its longgg.
1. I think my first ever ship on here was actually Riqua thanks to @heartsdive, the two of them are both having experienced the Realm of Darkness; Riku understands better than anyone what it’s like to be struggling with darkness and inner demons, so he’s a shoulder for Aqua to lean on when she needs it.
2. RikuRoku. They just have a really interesting dynamic and the way they met is certainly a unique one, it’s nice to see how much they have grown since that first initial meeting. I’m glad that I’ve gotten the chance to write both sides where they make up for their actions in the past and start fresh.
3. Rikai / Sorikai / Soriku. Honestly I love the Destiny Trio, I do wish Riku had gotten more time to interact with Kairi, we hardly got to see the two of them together since KH2 and its kind of sad. After all they were friends too and Riku clearly had feelings for her in KH1 if he was going to suggest that if he won, he got to share a paopu fruit with her.
4. Veniku. Ventus and Riku are such a unique pairing, especially since Riku is a dreameater of sorts? This pair has gained a place in my heart thanks to @foundliight and their Ventus, since their Ventus tends to get nightmares and since Riku doesn’t typically sleep due to insomnia as well as PTSD; he tends to make sure that everyone else is alright and sleeping soundly. He looks out for him.
5. This is tough because i have a lot of feelings for a bunch of ships for Riku. So i’m gonna add my honourable mentions here. Rikushi /RikuXi because the two of them wanted to do what was right and help their friend, even if it wasn’t the best way. I know he didn’t treat her right when they first met, but he realized his mistake and saw her as her own person.RikuNami is another precious ship which technically is built on RepliNami, Riku had time to meet her and get to know her while she was working on fixing Sora’s Memories. The two of them had gotten close during their time together and he cared about her.Lastly, Vaniku. This one was one that crept up on me, but Riku and Vanitas both understand what it’s like to be in someone else’s shadow- or more specifically Sora’s ‘Shadow’. At first it would be a bit antagonist it, but I could see the two of them getting along and understanding one another.
♥︎✧♥︎✧♥︎✧
1. I know this is gonna surprise some people but uh… Avaced. This is all thanks to Leche and their Aced blog ( @ursaced ). Honestly the dynamic they have is really special and they sort of mesh in a way that I never would have expected. He’s her big Teddy Bear and She’s his feisty Fox. The two of them already must have been close since he had asked her to form an alliance with him in Backcover, alongside Gula.
2. Gulava. This shouldn’t be a surprise but just watching their interactions and the little subtleties in Backcover, it’s not hard to tell that they are close. They are almost always in close proximity to one another. Ava cares a lot for Gula, and vice versa. Especially considering Gula does the one thing he isn’t suppose to do which is tell Ava about what’s written on the Lost Page, what he wants to do. And while she doesn’t help him, he seems to know that and admires her for her strength to do what’s right. I’m writing her with my friend on discord and their Gula, and god I love them so much. You know who you are~
3. Luva. I just think they have an interesting dynamic, and which we had gotten to see Luxu interact with the other apprentices more. But I’m basing this on my interactions with @gravitasfatum‘s Luxu. The two of them are awkward and precious around one another. And while it can be read as platonic or romantic, Ava wants Luxu to know that he deserves to be happy; even if things didn’t work on in the end as she thought he had been the traitor.
4. This one crept up on me since I have a verse where Ava had made it to the future and ended up meeting Vanitas. This Vanitas belongs to @vanities-redemption, the two of them end up travelling together and experiencing different worlds and experiences together. It’s with Ava’s help that Vanitas realizes what he was missing and it was because of him that she realized the mistakes that she made in the past.
5. Some other relationships either romantic or platonic that I would be interested to explore would be Invi/Ava, Ira/Ava, Ava interacting with her Dandelions or Ava even meeting some of the KH3 crew.

Wish there were some Sokai pregnancy fics or new parents fics out there. I can't seem to find any on fanfictionnet or ao3. Do you have any recs?
Here’s one from AO3, that’s really good and probably right up your alley: https://www.archiveofourown.org/works/20639528.
And an old, but classic one from fanfiction (and from the former queen of SoKai, sunflowerb): https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5753933/1/Letters-from-Home (edit: although, note that Kairi miscarries in this one:().Edit: Oh! Two more from sunflowerb. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4153395/1/Glass-Half-Full (and then this one https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4131077/1/ON-SWiTCH is its companion piece) and this one: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4939579/1/Plus.
Another one from fanfiction (from a semi-famous author, back in the day) https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5660464/1/Fear, but be warned that it has a tragic ending: it’s highly implied that Kairi dies after giving birth to the baby:( But I still enjoyed reading it, years ago. The parts before that happened, mainly. Haha.
...What else? Uhh, there’s this one.
Oh. Here’s a really good old one, by Gray-Rain-Skies, who many of us oldies in the fandom loved back in the day. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3401903/1/Fluttering-Capes-and-Secret-Identities
And this author is continuing their one SoKai lemon into this fic https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13408514/1/Island-Life, where Kairi’s pregnant and she and Sora have to deal with being parents. But it happens when they’re still teenagers/still in high school, so it has all of that kind of drama that you’d imagine.
And there used to be another good one--where Sora gets Kairi pregnant before he leaves on another adventure, and comes back years later to a daughter and Kairi is not happy with him at first (which is how she should be acting in that situation, tbh)--but I think it got deleted...
My fanfiction friend, Shadowjc32, once wrote a story about Sora and Kairi’s daughter, but I think he’s deleted a lot of his work:(
But I’m sure if you search things on Google, or perhaps even on fanfiction, “Sora and Kairi’s daughter (or “son” or “kid” instead, you might find stuff.
And while Sora and Kairi don’t have kids in this one yet https://www.archiveofourown.org/works/20297497/chapters/48117517 yet... I feel there’s a lot of foreshadowing that Kairi’s going to get pregnant. But if nothing else, Sora and Kairi talk about wanting to eventually start a family with each other and stuff. And this is just a really interesting story overall (Sora absorbs the darkness in the Black Box to save the world and Kairi--so it’s sort of a dark!Sora fic, but also not really. He’s still very Sora--and after that became the king of Kingdom Hearts, and Kairi has married him and become his queen to try and return him to the light)... but just note that there’s a lot of sexual content in it, if you’re not into that kind of thing: but the author has warnings about it on each chapter that has it, so you may be able to avoid it that way... or at least know what you’re getting into.
And while I fell behind on Shire Folk’s pretty famous “The Annals of Darkness” series https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3425579/1/The-Annals-of-Darkness-The-Beginning long ago (I read more of the original first fic than its rewrite here. And I don’t know if I’ve read much of any of the sequels), it’s prophesied in it that Sora and Kairi or Roxas and Naminé’s kid will eventually save the world for good. Whether they’ve had that kid yet... or are close to it, or ever will (maybe the prophecy was wrong or a lie), I don’t know. But they may have a kid in this... at least eventually. -shrugs-
Oh! And ParadiseAvenger writes some of that stuff. Like, here’s a SoKai lemon she wrote where Kairi’s pregnant. https://archiveofourown.org/works/693738/chapters/1275721?view_adult=true And then she also has written other stories where Kairi is unfortunately raped (ugh. I am so done with that trope in this fandom. But whatever.), and then Sora steps up and treats the kid like his own. Here are links to two of those that I can think of https://archiveofourown.org/works/709324/chapters/1310746, https://archiveofourown.org/works/1032787/chapters/2058058... though I think they actually end weirdly or tragically (usually she has happy endings). But just note that she writes some really dark and messed up things (I say with love, as I’m acquaintances with this writer), to try and draw light to some of these tragic things that happen to people:( I should also mention that a lot of her stuff is AU. Edit: And since my OCd won’t leave me alone if I don’t post this https://www.archiveofourown.org/works/18773989/chapters/44539129, ParadiseAvenger also wrote that one... where Kairi is forced into a brothel(:() and her captors make her unable to have kids (using dark magic); and once Sora and Riku save her, Sora’s sad for Kairi that they took that choice away from her. But at the end, her pure Light gets rid of the spell and she’s able to have kids again. The fic ends before she does or anything, but this story at least has them talking about kids (if you’re that desperate for SoKai + kids stuff), amidst all the bad things these poor babies go through.
This is all I can think of off the top of my head right now. But I know a lot of the SoKai fandom has talked about wanting to write domestic SoKai with kids lately, so maybe even more will pop up soon:)
I know I’ve had a headcanon about a SoKai daughter for, like, eighteen years now. Maybe I should finally write it...
Edit 2: And this one by PhoenixDowner https://www.archiveofourown.org/works/17243366/chapters/40550033 at least has them thinking that they want kids eventually, but not quite yet. It’s a sequel to her “Dear Sora/Those Who Dreamed” series, that she wrote before KHIII--trying to predict it--that’s now ended up an AU. You can read this whole oneshot without reading all of that. All you really need to know is that Sora died instead of Kairi (and Kairi and some of the others were in the X-Blade that Master Xehanort used to kill him)... before Sora received Kingdom Hearts’ power, became a god and used his powers to make the world better, before deciding to become human again to be with Kairi in particular.
Edit 3: And it looks like Xion92 is having SoKai kids stuff in their fic “The Red-Headed Prince”? Here’s a pic they drew about it at least. https://xion92.tumblr.com/post/616398709375303680/another-drawing-from-my-fan-fiction-the. And I know chachacharlieco from here draws a lot of SoKai family stuff for their Yakuza AU in particular. Here’s another art with them as a baby: https://www.deviantart.com/tenchufreak/art/commission-SoKai-Family-205787927
Edit 4: And I just found this fic last night. https://www.tumblr.com/search/sokai/recent/blog/leather-and-lace-lookbook
Edit 5: And this one has no kids or no kid talk, tbh, but it’s some domestic royal SoKai that you might like. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3423111/1/Just-Like-That
Edit 6: And this text post https://oveliagirlhaditright.tumblr.com/post/616251158947823616#notes.
And someone on here wrote Stella as SoKai’s daughter and Yozora as Riku and Nami’s, etc. But I don’t know where it is.
Edit 7: And there’s another one that I wish I had the link to still... so if anyone reading this knows it, let me know. It’s SoRiKai, though (but actually balanced well on all three sides, instead of being the SoRiku show with Kairi on the side). Where our heroes have finally defeated all the Big Bads and now they just have to politic because Kairi’s the princess of Radiant Garden and has to rule their now. And the people hate their polyamorous relationship... and that Kairi was with Riku at all, when they heard what he did in KHI. The people threatened to literally tear them apart... and SRK went to Mickey for help, but he said he couldn’t help them since his hands were tied and he had to play the game. This made Sora go crazy, and he killed Mickey (as ridiculous as it sounds--and it was--the fic was written so well, I could suspend my disbelief) and was attacking the town people... and Riku and Kairi had to use their combined powers to lock him away. But during this time, Kairi had become pregnant with Sora’s child... and Sora remained in stasis for years, and Riku and Kairi had to rule as King and Queen (who now the people loved for protecting them from the “evil Sora”) and raise Sora and Kairi’s son together... But I think Kairi eventually dies in her grief. And years later, when SoKai’s kid is a teen with his own Keyblade, he wanders his castle and finds the legendary Keyblade wielder in the basement and accidentally releases him. Sora doesn’t know he’s his son at first, and that that much time has passed, but (even though he wishes they had just killed him), I think he finds peace in knowing he can teach his son now, be with Riku (perhaps), and probably live on and do what Kairi would have wanted him to. The story actually starts out with the prince finding the Keyblade wielder (that you don’t know is Sora at first), and goes back and forth between present and past until you get it all figured out... and it ends in present, of course. It’s actually written really well.
Edit: And I just wrote one where Kairi gets pregnant. https://www.archiveofourown.org/works/24226009

I support Kairi with my whole heart and I really want the best for her.
But, it feels like fighting against a tidal wave when the writers/devs seem hesitant to do anything with her unless it’s motivating the main hero or for romance.
I was so excited to see what they would do with KH3 and Kairi because finally! She’s trained up! She can participate fully and completely! And not just for fighting, but advancing the plot! Making plans! Maybe occasionally leading the way.
And then they did THAT and I just... gave up.
ReMind made me feel a little bit better but..... look at what happened at the end still. It’s 1 step forward 2 steps back.
I guess this is what fanfiction is for.
I’m so happy that at least with Aqua and Xion, they don’t feel the need to make them so..... irrelevant I guess.
How in the world can he fix this? I just don’t know at this point. He probably doesn’t see anything wrong. And it kinda feels like only Kairi gets this treatment.
Namine doesn’t have a whole lot of screen time either, but we’ve known from the start she’s not a fighter or even a forefront character. She’s a slightly omniscient oracle. It doesn’t feel odd to me when she’s left out of the fighting group or doesn’t have a super active role in the plot.
But with Kairi? It always feels weird. The Destiny Trio is basically non-existent at this point. It’s more like Sora/Kairi and Sora/Riku, basically no SoRiKai and that’s straight up disappointing.
Like I LOVE TAV and RAX and the other weirder combinations (like with the Twilight Trio, or the Trinity Trio, or the Quatuplets Sora/Roxas/Ven/Vanitas). Why is it so hard for them to write some trio content for Sora, Riku, and Kairi? Their dynamic in at least KH2 was SO sweet??? That moment when Kairi begs Riku not to leave and Kairi begs Sora to help her and they all hold hands cheesing like dummies and then Sora has a breakdown in front of everyone? Glorious.
Bring it back

6 Things That Would Have Saved Kingdom Hearts III
So, I’m a lady gamer, and I loved 80% of this game. The other 20% is deal breaking for me.
Spoilers below the cut:
I know that Kingdom Hearts is a JRPG. Japan isn’t always good to its female characters and they can’t include canon queer content in their games without sacrificing their all ages rating; but I at least expected an open ended happy ending for our Destiny Trio the same way we got for the Wayfinder Trio and the Sea Salt Trio, and I REALLY expected them to respect their female characters--especially after making Aqua such a big deal in BBS and a Fragmentary Passage.
Since they couldn’t deliver on any of that, here are the six ways I would fix Kingdom Hearts:
1. Have the Destiny Trio share a Papou Fruit.
It’s not inherently romantic, and no matter what you ship you get to be happy about the three of them always being a part of each other’s lives. Yes, the current Papou scene is sweet, but Sora and Kairi don’t know each other anymore. Hell, I would argue that Kairi has spent more time with Lea/Axel than she has with Sora in the last three years. The scene relies heavily on the mirroring the cave wall drawing from KH1 and heterosexual norms of “the guy getting the girl” more than it does any build up to Sora and Kairi actually being close. A pact between the three friends to be part of each others lives and finally getting to move forward together--whatever that might mean for them down the line, including any ship you stan--would do both the characters and the fans a lot more justice.
I’m personally a sorikai shipper, so don’t spam my inbox calling me a Kairi hater. I just think she deserves to fall in love with Sora as he is now instead of being forced into it for plot purposes. And vice versa, and also both of them with Riku. But notice how I’m not saying it should have been a pan-poly free for all. Much as I would love that, it’s just not in the realm of reality for a JRPG affiliated with Disney. Not YET, anyway.
2. Have Kairi meet up with Sora after he’s restored himself in the Final World
So, Sora regains his form, and BOOM: there’s Kairi. We have a sweet scene with her and him flying in light holding hands, and then instead of going back to the real world, they go to save Riku together. Some prime Kairi and Sora ONLY combos ensue, and then Riku is awakened, and sticks with Sora and Kairi to go save everyone else--courtesy of the papou Fruit bond they all shared earlier.
This gives Kairi an active roll in her light powers (instead of continuing to make her a character that could easily be replaced with a vase) and gives the Destiny Trio a minute to hang out, interact, get some party banter, and act as a party--not to mention let Kairi and Riku actually have a conversation.
It also gives us time to see Kairi as the badass magical power tank she deserved to be. You can’t tell me a Princess of Heart with her link to light and a keyblade doesn’t have crazy resilience and fucking devastating magic. Not after how OP Aqua’s magic swordsman shtick was in BBS. Kairi deserved better.
3. Personalized reaction commands for every ally in the Keyblade Graveyard.
You remember Riku and Sora’s limit from KHII. Make one of those for each person Sora teams up with in the Keyblade Graveyard, and special ones for three person party mechanics.
4. Aqua doesn’t get felled by plot after her fight with Vanitas and something other than another damsel in distress situation is used to pull Ven out of his sleep.
Maybe a rousing speech from Aqua about how her friends are the most important thing to her, and she’ll fight Vanitas over and over again, or something. Mickey says Aqua is like Sora, so let’s see her pull Ven out in true Sora style instead of being forced to lose a fight she could have won in her sleep. Seriously, if I was supposed to lose, that fight should have been harder. But I pounded Vanitas with ease. His patterns haven’t changed since BBS and my girl Aqua has been leveling up and up and up in the realm of darkness, she did NOT deserve to robbed of that victory just because “I don’t drink my respect women juice” Nomura couldn’t think up another way to plot this.
5. Riku makes in-character decision regarding Sora and Kairi.
Riku stood back during the Aqua fight, didn’t hang with his friends on the island, and didn’t offer to go with Sora to find Kairi at the end. For a boy that spent all of the KH franchise either getting chased by Sora, chasing Sora or Kairi, or working for someone to help reawaken Sora, that doesn’t make a lot of sense.
So, instead, let’s have Riku team up with Sora for the Aqua fight. Let’s also have him go with Sora at the end of the game to find Kairi instead of being forcefully paired off with Namine. They can get separated due to plot later (See KH secret ending), but the way it is now, Riku has been plot zombied in order for Nomura to work out his FFXV bitterness. We get it, Nomura, you’re sad you didn’t get to make FFXIII versus, but don’t write my boy out of character just so you can have your way, please.
6. Namine gets to do more than just wake up at the end, and Kairi has a hand in saving her.
Maybe in the diving into everyone’s hearts sequence, we save Namine’s heart too. Or, when Xehenort strikes Kairi to make his 13th key, Kairi uses this an opportunity to guide Namine’s heart into the replica that’s still very much on the battlefield. Then, Namine gets to use her powers to somehow help in the final battle or the aftermath, and Kairi also gets to fulfill one of her missions--again, getting to be an active member instead just an object to force male character growth and action. Also, Namine doesn’t get forcefully paired off with another boy. They did it to her with Roxas, now they’ve done it to her again with Riku--even though it’s Repliku who cared about her. Also, don’t we still have Even? Repliku could have just waited it out in Riku’s heart for another body.
My conclusion:
All in all, I can’t justify giving Square Enix any more of my money based on the way they plotted this game.
Every time a woman picked up a keyblade she lost, got kidnapped, or was used as emotional leverage for male character growth and action. Nomura also seems more interested in working out his Final Fantasy XIII Versus/XV angst than he does in writing Riku realistically anymore. And poor Sora has become a cash cow for crossovers--even if it is going to be a TWEWY cross over.
Given the way both KH3 and FFXV treated their female characters, I can’t in good faith continue to support them as a female gamer. I’m very sad to say it, as both franchises have been very dear to my heart for almost as long as I’ve been playing games, but with awesome fem led, fem respecting, and queer inclusive indie games that could use my dollar more on the market, I will be taking my business elsewhere.

for ship ask: 5, 13, 32!
5. Do you have any poly ships?
Oh, tons!
My biggest one would probably be sorikai—Sora, Kairi, and Riku—from kingdom hearts. They’ve been besties for years in game and each of their goals in game is to, basically, return home and make sure the other two are safe. They’re best friends and i love them!!
There’s also Jlaireby, which is Jim, Claire, and Toby from Trollhunters. I ship them for the same reasons as stated above. These three have such good chemistry and they love each other so much!!!
There are various poly ships in MHA that are pretty cute too, like izuku, ochako and iida, or those three and todoroki, or kirishima, bakugou and kaminari, but I don’t actively ship these as much.
13. Has a ship ever broken your heart?
I don’t think so. I tend to ship the characters most likely to get together, so there’s normally no like “too bad these characters won’t ever get together”, and most of the time the shows I watch have happy endings. Also when it comes to romance, I normally respect whatever the writers choose to make canon, even if I didn’t really ship it (see allur//ance from vol//tron)
32. Share five must-read fics
Yesterday Upon the Stair by pitviperofdoom
Midoriya Izuku has always been written off as weird. As if it's not bad enough to be the quirkless weakling, he has to be the weird quirkless weakling on top of it.
But truthfully, the "weird" part is the only part that's accurate. He's determined not to be a weakling, and in spite of what it says on paper, he's not actually quirkless. Even before meeting All-Might and taking on the power of One For All, Izuku isn't quirkless.
Not that anyone would believe it if he told them.
I am absolutely in love with this fic!!! it’s an au where Izuku has a quirk that allows him to see ghosts and it follows all the way to the Eri arc. It’s so so sooooo good and i HIGHLY recommend it.
Occurrences in the Lives of a Couple of Hopelessly Oblivious Dorks series by Cipher032
A series on the roller coaster that is high school relationships, platonic and otherwise, as Deku and Ochako proceed through their high school careers.
Includes New Horizons and Roads Well Traveled.
Yes this is a series and not a specific fic, but both New Horizons and Roads Well Traveled are really good!!! Either fic is from the point of view of Ochako and Izuku respectively and are about how the two of them navigate their second year while dealing with the ups and downs of their friendship and also as they figure out exactly how they feel for each other. It’s incredibly in character and I absolutely love how Cipher is writing it!!
Catching Up by EchoFour
After a couple of rogue gems put her life at risk, Connie questions everything. She's loved being a Crystal Gem for four years. Training and fighting at Steven's side give her whole life meaning. But as Steven has learned more about the power he possesses and grasped more of it for his own, she's worried she can't keep up.
But Connie Maheswaran has never been the kind of person to give up just because of a little thing like human limits. Whatever it takes, whatever she has to risk, she will find a way to catch up.
This was an incredibly interesting take on best girl Connie Maheswaran and also just a really cool idea in general. It’s now part of a series that has a sequel in the works, and it has some of that adorable Connverse, as well as one of my FAVORITE stevonnie scenes I’ve ever read in one of the later chapters sooooo yeah. FANTASTIC FIC.
The Third Option by Uncertainty_Principle
Homecoming A/U.
Ben and May divorced before Peter’s parents died, so when Ben is murdered Peter goes into foster care. It takes just a tiny taste of superpowers for Peter to decide he doesn’t want to put up with his horrible foster father anymore—the streets are infinitely more appealing. All he wants is to be Spider-Man anyway.
So he leaves.
Simple.
Simple, that is, until Iron Man needs Spider-Man’s help. Peter isn’t about to turn down an opportunity to fight alongside Tony Freaking Stark, but he also isn’t going to let his hero know that his recruit is a fifteen-year-old homeless dropout. So they strike a deal. Peter will help Tony. In return, the mask stays on.
And that’s when things get complicated.
This fic, man........................ this fic.................... fucking heartbreaking. it’s written so god damn well. it has such DELECTABLE iron dad................ it is Not a happy fic but it’s so so so so so GOOD................................................... im love
and finally
Kingdom Hearts Ψ by HouseofSannae
An alternate take on what Could Have Been
yes this is another series. yes it is Incredibly Long. yes it is REALLY. FUCKING. GOOD.
it was plotted and started pre-kh3 and it’s incredibly intriguing!!! very wonderful character development and realistic relationships, both good and bad, between different characters. No seriously though, this characterization is So Good. I only have two complaints, one of which is serious and the other of which is just bc im me lol.
1. Recently it’s been a little on the nose about its Life Lessons, if you will. It has good messages and stuff, but sometimes it feels kind of forced. Do Not Let This Stop You From Reading Though. It’s So Good.
2. Sora is in nearly every fic but rarely has an essential part to it and It’s Blasphemy. not really, but i love sora, he’s my son, and the fact he’s kinda been pushed to the backburner the whole time. it make SENSE why bc he doesn’t exactly need the development BUUUUUUUT i love him and want more of him.
well, there you go! a couple of fics that i absolute adore!! thanks for asking rex!!

Fragmentary Memories: Fanfic Preview
This is still a work in progress but I promised yall a rewrite with all of my head canons and its HAPPENING. Gotta love me my Trans! Sora The fic, pairing is SoRikai, with moments of every combination! PS This fic also includes REAL TECHNIQUES FOR DEALING WITH PTSD and Panic attacks
Tap Tap Tap the distant sound of rock against glass persisted againstthe calm sound of rain outside of the small room. On the bed sat a petite feminine figure of a person, crouched in a corner, their back pressed against the walls of their room, and their gaze fixed upon a tan paper, ink etched into its surface. It had become a nightly routine for the ‘girl’ to jot down her thoughts; it helped with the nightmares. On pages she could map out her deepest fears, that which were inarticulable to even those she held dear. The emotions that still ruminated in her soul, and weren’t yet ready to make themselves known. It was a practice she found to be almost sacred in that aside from being the arms (or sometimes plopped down ontop of or in between) of her two dearest people, eased the ever growing fear that nestled in her heart. Though this practice was sacred, she found herself snapped out of the moment by in incessant tapping.
“What on earth is that sound” she exclaimed as she pushed the curtains aside only to see a water drenched boy standing a story below, looking up solemnly at her. “Sora! What the hell are you doing out in the rain, you’ll freeze to death!” She exclaimed as she quickly opened her window.
“I know…it’s stupid but please …” he didn’t have to finish his sentence, Kairi saw the desperation in Sora’s eyes a look she hadn’t seen since the night that changed all of their lives. Without hesitation Kairi held her hand out to him knowing he could make the jump up into her window without rousing the attention of her sleeping grandmother a few doors down.
Sora backed up and ran towards the side of the house, skillfully using the leverage to jump up and grasp Kairi’s hand. Within a few moments he stood, soaked in the middle of her bedroom. “Thank you” he whispered softly, his voice husk and devoid of its usual playfulness. Kairi could make out the puffiness and faint red tint in his eyes and faint salt streaks along his cheeks almost washed away by the rain. Without saying a word Kairi reached out, clasping her hand in his giving him a gentle affirming squeeze. She didn’t have to know what happened or what was wrong, she only knew that whatever it was, it had shaken him to his core.
“Of course, is there anything you need right now, you’re soaked let me get you something to change into”. Kairi offered as she turned to go to her dresser. The suggestion sent a wave of nausea to the boys stomach and itch under his skin in protest; however all he could externalize was a faint defiant tug at her hand.
Drawing her attention back towards him Kairi tilted her head in confusion. Sora’s expression had quickly changed. There was a quick flash of fear, and storminess in his eyes, sending a wave of concern throughout her. Though she began to become increasingly worried about what could have possibly caused such a reaction out of him, she knew that remaining calm would be the best way help her friend. “No worries” she said softly, giving his hand another gentle squeeze. “We don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.”
Sora’s grip on her hand seemed to tighten at that statement as he averted his gaze. His body was tense, his breathing beginning to become increasingly shallow, as echos and images flashed in his mind.
We’ve had enough of this. You disappear for god knows how long doing god-knows what and you expect us to be okay with it? You’re delusional. You don’t know what youre walking about all of that stress has gotten to your head!
The voices and images of his parent’s anger continued to resonate over and over. His precious belongings, gone, his clothes gone everything. He couldn’t stop the recent memories, they replayed on repeat until he felt a gentle squeeze on his hand again, tethering him to the reality before him. Bringing him back into his body. His gaze darted around the room, taking in their surroundings.
“You’re safe” Kairi whispered softly as to not startle him.
“Sorry” he managed to choke out, worriedly “Sorry…sorry sorry” his words seemed more like expressions to himself, or an invisible other rather than to his friend as he repeated the words.
“It’s okay, I’m not upset, you’re safe…I will stay here with you as long as you need” she responded quietly. “Is it okay to hug you?” she asked to which Sora’s eyes widened and he frantically shook his head.
“Sorry” he replied again, his breathing growing more erratic.
“It’s okay, do you want to try some grounding exercises?” she asked, knowing that Sora’s condition would most likely escalate if he wasn’t able to ground himself soon.
Sora thought for a moment, or rather attempted to gather his scattered fragments of thoughts before slowly shaking his head.
“Okay, what’s five things you can see?” Kairi asked quietly, as she gently ran her thumb along the back of Sora’s hand in a soothing pattern.
Sora couldn’t formulate words but merely pointed to a few items in the room, each item slowly drawing his focus back from the fear ridden fog it had been in. He looked around, noticing the dimly lit lights, he pointed to the note book perched upon Kairi’s pale pink cotton sheets, the Crayon drawings of their adventures hanging on Kairi’s wall, the way Kairi’s face though relaxed, still showed concern in the faint furrow of her brow, the pale pink color of her nails as they brushed against his hand. Sora could only point at the things as Kairi gently urged him on.
“Good, what’s four things you can hear?” she asked again.
Sora closed his eyes for a moment taking in the sound of the rain pounding against the window, the sound of his own slowly stabilizing breathing, his occasional coughs and sniffles, the buzz of the heater, and the calming sound of Kairi’s steady breath. For each thing he heard he managed to choke out a single word indication.
“That’s excellent” she gave his hand another gentle squeeze “What’s three things you can feel?”
Sora thought for a moment, he could feel the gentle caress of Kairi’s fingers stroking his hand, their consistent motion soothing his racing thoughts. He could feel the fuzziness of carpet beneath his feet, as he’d ran over barefoot, and he could feel the cling of his damp clothes against his skin, and the tight nylon fabric of a binder pressed against his chest.
“I-I think…I’m okay…” he managed to respond, as he gave Kairi’s hand a gentle squeeze.
They stood just like that for a few moments in silence, as Sora gathered his thoughts, his breathing had stabilized and his incoherent memories began to solidify. After a few minutes he finally uttered.
“They threw out everything…they hate me…they’re…they’re going to disown me.” His voice cracked at the statement as tears began to fill his eyes. “Everything! All of my clothes, all of my belongings anything they thought was too boyish my parents through out! They screamed at me!”
Kairi felt a wave of anger course through body at Sora’s distress, at the way his usual happy kind eyes seemed so defeated, and broken. She clutched her free hand in a fist, trying to swallow her anger to be fully present for Sora but she couldn’t.
“Listen to me, they’re wrong. They are so incredibly wrong, whatever they think whatever they say, they’re wrong for treating you like that you hear me Sora?” She placed her hands gently on Sora’s cheeks to direct his gaze to her.
He stared back at her, eyes wide with tears. “You’re one of the strongest, kindest, loveliest boys I know, and if they can’t see that, if they can’t see all the things their sonhas done then theyaren’t worthy of you. You’re the boy who saved the universe for crying out loud. And they’re mad because what? They got your gender wrong? I’ll fight both of them goddamit.” Kairi tried her best to manage her anger.
Kairi’s words broke the floodgate Sora had been suppressing in his whirlwind panic. Relief, fear, sadness, hatred, visceral pain all bubbled their way to the surface as Sora reached towards Kairi, burying his face into the crook of her neck in a half attempt to muffle his sobs. Taking Sora’s lead on physical contact, Kairi wrapped her arms around him, gently placing the flat of her hand on his back, and gently rubbed circles into the damp fabric. They stayed like that for a few moments, Kairi’s arms firm around him as he fell apart.
Kairi had always known Sora’s parents did not approve of who he really was even before their journey across worlds, but she never imagined they’d do something as drastic as disown him. During their time on the islands when they were younger, Sora always passed himself off as a tomboy much to his parent’s disapproval. But spending so many years away from them, meeting new people, new places, had allowed Sora the freedom to be himself. No one questioned, no one knew, except her and Riku. Sora had grown into the young man he was always meant to be, and yet, his parents could not see him for who he really was. The thought angered Kairi, the pain they caused him sent her into a rage, but more important than her rage was her ability to comfort her dear friend. She continued to simply breathe deeply and rub soothing circles into the boys back.
After nearly twenty minutes, Sora had cried himself dry. All that he could make out were faint whimpers and sniffles. He’d tired himself out emotionally, his head throbbed and his eyes were puffy and red, contrasting against the electric blue of his irises. “I’m sorry for causing so much trouble…I should probably head back” he managed to whimper out.
“Heck no” Kairi responded adamantly “you’re staying here tonight, or going over Riku’s but no way are you going back to that hell house. You’re no trouble at all I’m glad you came here, and that you’re safe. I will always be there for you Sora, you know that” she gently cupped his cheek with a soft smile.
Sora glanced up at her, his gaze meeting hers for a moment. Her tender smile sending an ache in his chest, the contrast of her kindness against a growing wound he carried, her warmth contrasted against his own. He hadn’t quite realized how warm she was. In their years a part, the quiet girl, had grown to become a kind warm protector. The tenderness of her touch and the gentleness of her smile enveloped him in a sense of safety. Content with her offer he simply nodded and snaked his arms around her in a grateful squeeze.
“I can even call Riku if you want, and make it a sleep over.” She suggested as she began to shift around looking for her phone. “Though god I don’t know what would stop him from not storming over to your house and fighting your parents on sight if he finds out.” She said with a slight chuckle to lighten the mood as she began to step away to grab her phone. However her actions were stopped by Sora tugging her back closer.
“In…in a moment…” he responded softly, not wanting to lose the warmth surrounding him. He felt far to tender and exposed to break the moment.
Kairi let out a surprised huff, before settling back into him, wrapping her arms around him again. Sora in response nuzzled into her and closed his eyes.

“we’ve been dating this whole time but you didn’t know??”
post kh2. sorikai. on ao3 [ here ]
Riku snorts when he sees Sora stumble out of his front door, almost tripping over his large feet and desperately clutching onto an aluminum tin. His mom calls out to wish him a good day, and his ma laughingly tells him to wish Riku a happy birthday from her. Sora shouts back he will; Riku raises his voice, too.
“Thanks, Arisa!”
Sora smiles at him as he basically skips towards him, and Riku hums as Arisa whistles at him before the front door closes. Turning his attention to his friend, Riku looks at how big the tin is. Someone went overboard.
Again.
Laughing, Riku ruffles Sora’s hair, ignoring Sora crying out for his balance. “You’ve fought against heartless, but holding one oversized tin is enough to get you scared?”
“You’re gonna ruin the cupcakes! I frosted them, and everything!”
“I hope you don’t expect me to carry those around school all day. Kairi’s made me some, too, right?”
Sora perks up at the mention of his girlfriend, and Riku grows fond against his own volition. The two of them are cute together, just like he knew they’d be. Riku lets out a small smile while Sora answers.
“Yep! And you have to eat all of them.” Sora gives him a mock glare. “No giving them out to the rest of our year.”
Eyebrow rising, “No? You know Selphie’s gonna take one of each, and Tidus is gonna whine until I feed him.”
“They’re our friends! But no one else! We worked hard on these!” A dusting of pink litters Sora’s cheeks. “And they’re special. We made them with extra love this year.”
“...are you saying that my cupcakes from two years ago, you held out on me?”
“You’re so annoying.” Sora bumps his shoulder with Riku, still ever so careful about the tin in his arms. “You know what I meant, stink face.”
Riku thinks he does; for a while, none of them thought they’d get to see another birthday. And his is the first one since they’ve been reunited. It’s more than just him getting another year older; it’s a symbol that they’ve made it, that they’re all still together. “Of course, Sora.”
“Good.”
Sora lingers close to his arm, Sora’s own brushing up against Riku’s, all the way to Kairi’s house. Riku smiles over his friend’s head, just looking at him, fondness coursing through him – they could make it to Kairi’s house blindfolded, the both of them. Listening as Sora chatters about what he thinks of last night’s episode of his moms’ favorite drama, Kairi’s house draws closer and closer. She’s waiting for them, no mad dash like Sora to greet them.
In her hands is another tin, this time a glass one. Riku can make out chocolate cupcakes and yellow frosting.
“Riku! Happy birthday!” Kairi beams at him, raising the baked goods in her arms. “Mine are better than Sora’s.”
“They are not! You’re using my ma’s recipe, may I remind you.”
Snorting, Riku leans down pretend to inspect them. “I dunno, Sora. Did you make the frosting yellow?”
“Duh.”
“Chocolate cake?”
“Obviously.”
Riku straightens, putting on a solemn face. “Then it comes down to taste.”
Kairi giggle-snorts while Sora huffs. “None of you appreciate the blessing Ma gave us.”
“Aw, of course we do.” Riku pulls the both of them to him slowly so as not to disrupt the cupcakes, arms around their shoulders. “Thank you for the extra love cupcakes, guys.”
Both Sora and Kairi’s faces heat up, Riku notes. His stomach flutters at the reminder of how important he is to them. He can’t believe his younger self was jealous and doubtful because of Sora’s crush. Even with the new development of his friends dating, he’s still just as included as he’s ever been.
“You’re welcome, Ri.” Kairi grins up at him. “Everyone is gonna pout seeing you’re already loaded up with stuff.”
Riku groans. “You’d think after being gone a year I wouldn’t be popular anymore.”
“Ha! So you’re going carry the cupcakes!”
“Of course he is. And it’s because you look like a bad boy. Also you’ve got soft hair.”
Ignoring Sora, Riku blows his bangs out of his face. “You think a haircut would cut it?”
“No.” Kairi and Sora pout at him. “Do you want to cut it?”
Shrugging, Riku notes they’re almost at school. “I just thought of it.”
“Well, you’d look hot long or short hair.” Kairi gives him a wide mouthed smile, face full of affection. “I’ll get Selphie to give you a discount if you really want a cut.”
Sora laughs. “She’d probably do it for free just to say she got to touch it.”
“Probably,” agrees Kairi.
Riku rolls his eyes, detaching himself from his friends. “Why aren’t either of you disastrously unattainable in the eyes of the student body?”
“We don’t have muscles, sadly.”
“I could workout with you two, you know.” Both of his friends make disgusted faces at him. “Fine, don’t join me in popularity.”
“We’ll survive, I’m sure,” Sora drawls as he opens up his tin. “Take one so I can eat one!”
Rolling his eyes, Riku obliges and takes out two cupcakes, knowing Kairi won’t eat one until break. “You could’ve just had one before putting them in here.”
“They’re for you!”
“And you’re still gonna eat like half of them.”
“Duh, you aren’t gonna eat like fifty cupcakes by yourself.”
Kairi laughs at Sora talking with cupcake in his mouth. “Maybe finish your bite first.”
“No.”
Riku shares the long suffering look Kairi shoots him. Sora, while the greatest friend they could ask for, is a sloppy heathen. Kairi shakes her head at her boyfriend, rolling her eyes as he proceeds to inhale the rest of his cupcake. Riku purposefully makes a show of slowly eating his, enjoying the way Sora makes silly chewing faces at him. Kairi fondly mutters about them, eyes slipping between them.
Wiping the little frosting he got off the corner of his mouth, Riku lets out an exaggerated sigh as he holds out his arms; with Kairi saying he’s gonna carry the cupcakes, it’s better to just give in. Kairi’s cheeks are flushed with happiness, probably because he didn’t even pretend to resist. She places her tin in his hands, and Sora delicately stacks his on top.
“A birthday Riku, ready for the masses!”
Snorting, Riku pulls his arms in a little. “I’m always ready for the masses.”
“Uh huh.” Kairi pushes some of her hair behind her ear, glancing at Sora before him. “I’ll see you at lunch?”
“You know it!”
Riku nods. “Yeah. Please don’t make any dramatic birthday declarations.”
“There will be no promises,” both of them say in sync.
--
Selphie gawks at him when he walks into class. Riku takes his seat next to her. “Another Sora and Kairi cupcake bash.”
“No shit.” She lifts Sora’s tin up to get to Kairi’s, fiddling to get one cupcake from each. “I’m so jealous; did you see what my boyfriend did for my birthday?”
“I still say you should break up with him.”
“He’s cute, though! And I guess we can’t all have Sora’s ma’s talent for chocolate cake.” Selphie takes a bite, moaning at the taste. She finishes chewing before continuing. “Besides, not all boyfriends can be as great as Sora.”
Riku thinks of how Sora thinks the absolute world of Kairi, how far he’d go for her safety, the easy way the two transitioned from friends to lovers. The lack of any jealousy between them for how close Riku and Kairi are. “Touché.”
“Soooo!” Selphie raises her eyebrows suggestively. “Any plans for after school?”
Wrinkling his nose at the implication, Riku shakes his head as he digs into his backpack for his pen. Their teacher should be in soon. “We’re probably gonna go to the play island, hang out.” ‘We’ is easy enough for Selphie to figure out is Sora and Kairi; it’s not like Riku really hangs out with anyone else besides them and her. “Sora’s mom’s probably gonna make dinner.”
Selphie blinks at him. “You’re not spending your b-day dinner at home?”
“No.” His tone is harsh, but he knows it’ll make Selphie drop it.
True to form, her lips pull up into another smile. “What did the lovebirds get you?”
“Cupcakes.”
“Rikuuuuu,” she whines.
“Probably an embarrassing announcement at lunch, if I’m right.”
“You’re so lame. I’d be fawning if my boyfriend did any of the things Kairi and Sora do for you.”
“Break up with him, Selphie,” Riku tells her as their teacher walks in.
--
Tidus takes a plateful of cupcakes; he came to class with a plate ready.
“Dude, I’ve looked forward to your birthday since we were babies. Sora’s ma’s cupcakes are the shit.”
“I’m feeling very used.”
Shoving cupcake into his mouth, Tidus nods. “You know our friendship is just a sham. I’m only here for Sora benefits.”
“That hurts.” Riku puts a hand to his heart. “I thought what we had was special.”
“Nope!”
Swiping at him, Riku is pleased to see frosting jam into the other boy’s cheek as he misses his mouth. “Asshole.”
“I’ll let that slide since you’re gonna let me eat as many of these as I want.” Tidus wags a finger at him. “But know, come tomorrow, I’m gonna be pissed at you for ruining my cupcake.”
“Sure you are.”
“I am. And I’ll beat you at something, for once.”
“Kairi and Selphie’s scoreboard doesn’t agree with you.”
“I hate you. But tell Sora I love his ma.”
“You can tell Sora that yourself, weirdo.”
Tidus slaps his shoulder. “What’d Sora get you anyway? Kairi?”
“Cupcakes.”
Groaning, Tidus punches his shoulder this time. “You used that on Selphie, too, didn’t you?”
“Yep.” Riku dusts off his shoulder, making a point of blowing off the imaginary dust. “You two are too easy.”
“I bet Sora and Kairi can say that about you.” He wiggles his eyebrows the exact same way Selphie did. “You gonna give it up today, huh, Riku? We gonna see a kiss today?”
Eyebrows scrunching, Riku looks at Tidus. He’s not dating anyone. He’s never even flirted with anyone at school. “What are you and Selphie on about today?”
“Psh. We’re just being nosy; sources say birthdays are romantic occasions.” Tidus dramatically lies across his desk, barely missing his cupcake plate. “Besides, I’m living vicariously through you and Selphie, man.”
“...I have no clue what you’re talking about.”
“I guess you of all people wouldn’t.” Tidus looks up at him pathetically. “Can I steal more cupcakes?”
“It’s not like I was stopping you before.”
--
Sora and Kairi are waiting for him at their usual table, hands linked together. Riku smiles at how cute they are, both of them raising their hands, still connected, to wave him over. Their smiles are beaming, and Riku makes his way over. Sora’s cheeks dimple while Kairi’s eyes crinkle.
“Are you two gonna embarrass me?”
“Nope!” Sora declares. Kairi reaches for a cupcake, one of the ones Sora made since it’s easier to get to one handed. “We’re just gonna play footsie under the table and eat lunch.”
Kairi’s foot comes out to bump his, shortly followed by both of Sora’s, and Riku laughs. Of course Sora was serious.
“You dorks.”
A peak of Sora’s tongue while Kairi salutes. “You know it.”
“Embarrassing you comes after school.”
“Oh, so your moms are gonna participate?”
“Yep!”
“Kairi, please save me.”
“No way. Go against Sora’s moms? Pass.”
Riku knocks her foot. “So much for trust.”
“You wouldn’t trade me for the worlds.”
“You’re damn right.”
One of Sora’s feet does a little kick, and his arm comes up so he can rest his cheek on his palm. “I love you two.”
“Love you, too,” is Kairi’s easy response.
“Me, too.”
“It’s ‘me, three,’ c’mon, Riku,” comes Tidus, swinging down to sit by him. “If there’s three of you, you might as well do it right.”
“Nobody asked you.”
Selphie waves Riku off as she sits on the other side of him. “The peanut gallery always is allowed opinions.”
“Are not,” says Sora. “It’s still ‘too,’ anyway. Two people love me, not three.”
“Don’t you ever bring grammar up to me ever again. You gotta do it for the vibe.”
Selphie and Kairi roll their eyes, and Sora sticks his tongue out. Riku grabs a cupcake. Sora’s right, but not for the reason he gave; Riku, however, isn’t gonna give Tidus anything.
“So, where the fuck are my gifts, anyway, Tidus, Selphie?”
Flipping her hair with an eyeroll, Selphie doesn’t even look at him as she opens her lunch sack. “I didn’t get you anything. Do you want–” she pulls out fruit gummies and waves them.
“On principle.”
She hands them over, and Riku raises his eyebrow at Tidus. Sora’s face is red trying to hold in his laughter. Kairi’s hand is over her mouth in amusement.
“Dude, my presence is a present.” Tidus shrugs. “I have nothing.”
“Some friend you are. I got you a smoothie.”
“Yeah, because it wasn’t on a school day!”
“Your point?”
“Kairi, tell him to stop being mean to me.”
Kairi puts her hand on top of his, her face now serious. “Riku, keep going.”
“Rude!”
Selphie tuts while Sora can’t contain his laughter any longer. “You know they’ll never team up against each other, Tidus.”
“I can hope; what was that saying about friends before girlfriends?” Tidus waves his hand. “And Soras.”
Kairi snorts while Sora lets out a “hey!” "Even before we were dating he’d pick us over you, remember?”
Riku blinks. And he examines Kairi to see if she’s feeling okay; she’s dating Sora, not him. He ignores whatever Tidus comes back with, and turns his attention to Sora. Sora, who isn’t even jokingly butting in, who isn’t even fazed, who just has a big smile on his face. It doesn’t settle right in his stomach. Sora would never take it to mean anything – there’s a reason he trusts Kairi and he trusts him – but what Kairi said isn’t right.
Sora notices him looking, his smile getting softer. Riku, for just a moment, thinks about not drawing any attention to this weird moment – to just confront Kairi later. But he immediately puts that thought out of his head. The three of them are a team, and Kairi said this in front of the both of them. Besides, Sora’ll probably love teasing him once this is over; Riku’s probably missing something.
Subtly jerking his head, Riku starts packing away his lunch. Sora nods, and Kairi, ever aware, also starts putting away her tiny food containers.
“Well, it’s time for us to give Riku one of his presents!” Sora gives an apologetic smile to their friends. “Riku, close your eyes. It’s in our spot.”
Selphie squeaks. “You waited until half of lunch was over just to tease us!”
“Maybe.” Kairi puts her hand on Selphie’s. “But you’ll get to see it next class, so I think you’ll forgive us.”
“It better be good!”
Riku snorts as he picks up the cupcake tins and stands. Sora throws his lunch pack hazardously into his backpack while Kairi puts hers in her front pouch. “I think it’s my job to judge if their presents are good or not.”
Sora pushes him forward, and Kairi slots herself on his other side. Her hand hangs close to his, ready for either him to take it or for her to take his if he’s feeling overwhelmed. Sora’s stays on the small of his back. Swallowing, Riku feels bad that they think he’s...feeling lost, as they’ve taken to calling it when one of them needs the reminder that they’re finally home.
Once they reach the little supply closet that is never locked and never checked, Kairi leans in to look him in eyes after he places the cupcakes on a shelf. “You okay, Ri?”
“Yeah.” Riku gives her a reassuring smile before dropping it to continue. “I’m just...confused. About earlier.”
“Earlier?” Sora asks, his hand drawing away from his back. He puts his hands above his head.
“Kairi said we were dating.”
Both of his friends look at him blankly. “Uh, yeah?”
“Um.” Riku can’t detect anything but confusion from them. “You two are dating?”
He’s met with frowns, Sora and Kairi looking at each other before Kairi’s hand comes up to his forehead under his bangs. Her hand is warm against his skin. “Are you sure you’re feeling okay, Ri?”
“Did you hit your head? Are you missing anything?”
Riku shakes his head, Kairi’s hand falling to instead over hesitantly around his cheek.
“But you don’t remember us asking you out?” she says.
“You....have never asked me out.” Riku thinks over all his memories, trying to find any piece at all makes any sense of this. Kairi and Sora have been their usual selves, nothing at all telling him something is out of place or someone’s been dream snatched or he’s being messed with. “Are you my Kairi and Sora?”
Sora whacks him in the arm. “Are you our Riku?”
“Neither of you have mentioned alternate realities, so one of you better start talking, my Sora and Riku or not.”
“We’ve never encountered them, but Kairi! We’ve had so many date nights, he can’t be ours if he hasn’t lost any memories!”
Riku sighs. “How about we start from where we remember dating beginning and go from there.”
“Right.” Sora nods enthusiastically.
Kairi sits down, patting the spots beside her. “We might as well get comfortable.”
Riku folds himself down as best as he can, but Kairi and Sora prod at his legs until he just sits with them on top of the two of them. It’s more comfortable, like Kairi wanted, and she smirks at him for it before pushing some hair behind her eye, face getting serious.
“So, I guess Sora and I’ll go first.” She grabs Sora’s hand, fiddling with his fingers. “Remember after Tidus’s birthday, we went to the play island for the weekend? And we watched the sunset?”
“And Sora wanted to sleep right there on the beach? Yeah.” Riku smiles. “I had to throw him over my shoulder to get him up to the shack.”
“Listen, it would’ve been nice!!”
“Not after the tide came up.” Riku and Kairi counter at the same time.
Sora rolls his eyes. “But, we changed into our pajamas, and the two of you were very warm. I almost kissed you right there.” He scratches his head. “I figured it’d be better to wait until morning, though.”
Kairi flicks his forehead while Riku laughs.
“Stop it.” Sora pouts at them. “But morning rolled around, and the sun was shining just right to make both of your hair shiny when we went back out. And when you grabbed us, I had to.”
Kairi’s smiling, love woven into her face despite her blush. Sora’s cheeks are flushed, and Riku feels too warm. Sora’s always frank about his emotions, but for the most part Riku’s never been exposed to it in a romantic context. Listening to Sora talk about his memory – their memory, so far nothing has changed between their recollections expect the end product – makes Riku wish that he could have what they’re insisting is real.
Swallowing, Riku ignores the urge to grab at his friends. Sora and Kairi are happy, and he won’t ruin it in a moment of weakness at whatever is happening here.
“Kairi let me kiss her, but you told me not to.” Sora flashes a smile at him. Riku feels his stomach drop; his Sora had done the same thing. “You looked really panicked about it, so I grabbed your hands, and I told you I loved you. Then you told me you love me, too, and that it was about time, and you let me rest my head on your shoulder while Kairi made us breakfast. And I told her I love her, too. That’s how we started dating!”
Riku stares at his friend, and then he turns to stare at Kairi. He once again looks at Sora. “That’s...exactly how I remember you two started dating.”
Kairi groans. “What part of that makes it seem like just me and Sora were dating? You were right there. Sora said he loves you.”
“Uh, the part where Sora’s been crushing on you since forever? I thought he was panicking about kissing you in front of me.”
“Wait, so you don’t mind kissing?!”
“Sora, focus.” Kairi puts a finger in Riku’s face. “And our date nights? What, pray tell, where you thinking those were?”
Riku glances at Kairi’s finger, wetting his mouth. He’s in deep shit, whatever he says. There’s been no reality swapping, just miscommunication, it seems. “I thought we were hanging out.”
“Hanging out!” Sora cries. “I was sitting as close to in your lap as I thought you’d be comfortable with! We had a rotating schedule!”
“A...rotating schedule?”
“We'd rotate Saturday mornings; one for you and Sora, one for you and me, one for me and Sora. And Saturday evening we’d have a group date. Did you not notice?”
“No?” Riku says. He was definitely aware that he thought it was weird that Sora and Kairi never went out as a couple on the easiest weekend day, but he never thought it was because they thought he was supposed to be a part of the date.
Sora hits his face with his palm while Kairi pokes him in the forehead. “My gods, I’m in love with idiots.”
Her voice is fond, and Riku takes solace in that. “I...don’t know what to say.”
Kairi clamps her hand over Sora’s mouth, speaking over him. “Do you need time?”
“No.” Riku looks at his legs, thrown over Kairi and Sora’s. Looks back at all the time he felt warm at being included, at not being third wheeled. Knowing, now, it’s easy to see how their interactions with him have changed. It’s the little extra touches, the little softer smiles, the pink cheeks. Sora wasn’t panicking or feeling pity when he tried to kiss him; flushing, Riku looks the both of them in the eye. “I want to do this right, this time.”
Kairi and Sora’s smiles are blinding. Riku lets his lips pull into a small one, reaching for his friends hands.
“Can I kiss you?” Sora asks, clumsy.
Rolling her eyes, Kairi shakes her head, and Riku laughs. “Yeah.”
“Thanks, Riku!”
Sora lunges over Kairi, and Riku ignores the way it makes his legs hurt. It’s a quick peck, Sora’s chapped lips only just brushing his, but Riku feels his heart skip a beat at how pleased Sora looks when he pulls away. Sora’s fingers tangle into his shirt as he settles back on his side of Kairi, and Kairi finds his hand.
“So, is this a you don’t mind kissing, or is this a special occasion?”
Riku shrugs, just enjoying their attention now that he can. He’s never thought he’d date; Kairi and Sora have been it, for him.
Kairi kisses the corner of his mouth. “Keep us posted.”
“Yeah.”

trick or treat
Hey there!! Thanks for checking out my letter :D
General likes: Worldbuilding, queer characters and queer characters being normalised aka them being queer is not the focus of the fic, fight scenes and fighting banter, established relationships!!!!!!, daemon AUs, soulmate AUs, pining, outside POV, social media fic, post canon fic, femslash, violence and blood as long as comfort follows the hurt. I really love some plot - doesn’t have to be deep or anything, just a solid storyline is great. Including original characters is also great!
General dislikes: fake dating, marriage of convenience, miscommunication (pining okay), NSFW or any implied sex, character bashing, unhappy endings. If you’re going to write a trans character please don’t misgender them.
Worldbuilding prompts/ideas here!
Other letters for other exchanges
—
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Fandom likes: Vala lives!!!, Aloy interacting with Old World tech, GAIA Prime being rebuilt, TFW characters interacting with base game characters, Aloy being a big lady lover!!!, Vala interacting with other characters (especially those in the Cut), Aloy introducing Varl or Vala to old world tech, striders and just machines in general befriending Aloy when she overrides them, normal people’s reactions to Aloy’s actions, Aloy being a living legend
I didn’t request Aloy in my sign up, but I would be very happy to have her in my gift! I just figured it would be better to match on one of the smaller characters so that our tastes in characters more closely aligned, since everyone loves Aloy ;)
Spooky Scary Prompts
Outside POV of Aloy and anyone with her, casually discussing/doing something that ordinary people balk at?
Fighting a scary new machine?
Someone who isn’t Aloy exploring a Cauldron!
Hurt/comfort with someone falling in battle to protect someone else
Sweet Treat Prompts
Exploring new areas, discovering new things that aren’t expected
Making friends with machines! Overridden or not, creator’s choice
Bringing together people from different tribes to all work together
Being happy in a post-post-apocalyptic world
Cute dates!! Aloy/girls is my OTP, but I love Aloy/Vala to an intense degree
—
Kingdom Hearts
Fandom likes: Riku is FTM trans, Roxas or Xion or Ven or Van lurking in the background/influencing Sora’s actions while they’re still in his heart, Sora crying, drive forms, keyblades!!, Van remembering KHUX events, SORIKAI, Nobodies being treated like the really fucking scary/dead things that they are, Roxas being OP, the Oathkeeper and Oblivion (the keyblades and their symbolism). I love Roxas a lot. If you could include him, I would really be over the moon.
I’ve played KH3, and unless you’re going to be doing some canon fixing, I’d prefer if you stayed away from it. Fixing KH3 would be very, very welcomed though!!
What I didn’t like about kh3: everyone getting rebodied with no explanation, literally the entire ending, the lack of Riku and Kairi interacting, the lack of Oathkeeper and Oblivion, Lea breaking the fourth wall all the time, the WEIRD paopu fruit scene between Sora and Kairi (I ship sokai but something was really offputting to me about that scene), the lack of interaction between all the different characters (Riku and Aqua should talk!!), Vanitas not being redeemed. PLEASE if you’re doing post canon kh3 fic, can you please have Sora, Kairi and Vanitas alive (or just don’t mention them so I can pretend they’re alive). You absolutely do not have to explain how they’re alive if you don’t want to, just have them all there and I will 100% accept it!
Spooky Scary Prompts
Sora becoming a Heartless – implications, memories, nightmares, anti/rage form
Kairi losing her heart – how did it affect her? Does she remember anything? Any side effects from her heart being gone from her body for so long?
Riku – Dreameater powers!! Literally eating dreams! Ripping apart nightmares! Body modifications due to being a dream eater – BIG fan of either actual wings, or wing tattoos, or the dreameater scar being branded onto his back.
Roxas – is basically a dead body walking around powered by pure willpower. Side effects? How does his lack of memories affect him? Can Nobodies do Wack things like walk through walls if they want? How does their unique element/power show in everyday moments? How are Nobodies physically different from humans, can humans pick them out at a glance or is there just something deeply unsettling about Nobodies? Do Nobodies have to do things like eat and sleep, do they really bleed or not?
How does trauma help bring these kids together?
Sweet Treat Prompts
Sora/Riku/Kairi dates, kisses, cute fluffiness on Destiny Islands post KH3! Any Destiny Islands holiday headcanons?
Roxas and Xion bonding, or Roxas and the Twilight Trio! World building in Twilight Town would be awesome!
Namine/Xion also very welcome as a background pairing, those two are super adorable together
—
Fire Emblem Heroes
Fandom likes: Fjorm. I love, adore, and cherish Fjorm. If you write me anything about her, I will love it. Besides that – please only use they/them pronouns for the Summoner. I like Fjorm being OP, soft ice siblings and ice siblings in general, and fix it fics where everyone lives. I would prefer the Summoner to be written just like any other character, not as a self-insert – so third person POV please.
Also, marriage of convenience is 100% okay for Fjorm and Laegjarn! It’s about… the yearning…
Spooky Scary Prompts!
Fjorm being possessed by Nifl and so she’s a dragon unit now... how does everyone react to the curse of Nifl finally running its course?
Angst between a summoned Laegjarn and Fjorm about how Laegjarn died in Fjorm’s arms?
Fjorm hiding her growing illness from everyone but [character] discovers it – do they convince her to tell people on the down low, or does Fjorm convince them to keep it a secret?
Sweet Treat Prompts!
Fjorm protecting Kiran, and Kiran taking care of Fjorm in return!
Cute ice sibling interactions!! Between Fjorm and any of her siblings, how does she interact with them, what are their everyday interactions like, what are their in jokes, how do they train with each other, how do they juggle their royal responsibilities with their family life?
Fjorm bonding with the fire princesses!
Fluffy Fjorm/Laegjarn always welcome!

Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Fandom likes: Byleth being involved with teaching the other houses (not just recruiting students but actually teaching), Sothis commenting on everyday life, Jeralt being protective of Byleth, students looking out for Byleth, really creepy things happening to/about Byleth after Sothis gives them her powers. Please only use they/them pronouns for Byleth!
I have yet to finish FE3H yet (about halfway through golden deer route, just past the timeskip!), but I would love to receive pre-timeskip fic with character interactions between Byleth and the golden deer students. I’m interested in the golden deer students because that’s the route I’m playing, but I’ve recruited a lot from the other houses so including pretty much any student would be great!
EDIT: I have now finished golden deer, blue lions routes, and black eagles!! I’m working on silver snow now but won’t finish before reveals, so please only no spoilers for that route. Would be completely fine with anything set in any time period of the other routes though! (and would love post canon content if you’re up for that)
I have so many prompts for this fandom because it’s my first time requesting it and… I have Thoughts
Spooky Scary Prompts!
Byleth is now a god!! Or, at least they have the powers of a goddess after Sothis gifts her powers to them. WHERE is the spooky fic about that, Byleth realising that they’re no longer human, being able to do stuff like really casually affect time in ways that other people can see, coming to terms with the fact that they’re not human anymore.
How do the rest of the students react to Byleth’s newfound hair/eyes/powers beyond what we see in game, how does this affect Byleth’s teaching, what weird ways does Byleth use their powers that maybe freaks out everyone who sees it happening?
Or if you want to go really spooky – I’m very, very interested in anything body horror relating to Sothis merging with Byleth, it was way too easy in the game and if you have any creepy ideas about how that could have affected Byleth physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, go for it!!!
I really think that Byleth deserved to go absolutely just batshit feral during the second half of chapter 10 after they inherited Sothis’s power, so blood/gore/crazy sword fighting is really encouraged!!
More general creepiness as well could be the Sword of the Creator gaining some low level of sentience – not speaking or anything like that, but the Sword tugging at Byleth, encouraging them to fight a little more ferally than normal, pushing them over the edge into killing someone (ESPECIALLY if this happens post-merge with Sothis), and just lurking in the back of Byleth’s head, always there and connected by their blood and Sothis’s power is… a Very neat concept if I do say so myself
Someone getting hurt/killed and Byleth going Full God Mode and turning back time first, but also then going forth to wreck devastating revenge even though the student is okay now? Outside POV of this one could be done quite well 0 I’m imagining Byleth with this unnatural wind blowing around them, bright glowing eyes, whipping around the Sword of the Creator and moving unnaturally fast… Everyone is silently freaking out in the background as Byleth proceeds to take out this whole bandit nest by themselves
Sweet Treat Prompts!
Byleth hanging out with some students… Byleth laughing for the first time and surprising everyone and then everyone thinking that Byleth has a super cute laugh and trying to get them to laugh again…
Claude keeping track of how many times Byleth has smiled and arranging circumstances so that Byleth smiles more often
Byleth discovering neat new hobbies around the monastery that they didn’t know about or could ever do before while they were on the move as a mercenary
Byleth and Jeralt interacting!! Give me those Good Dad Moments!!
Byleth and Jeralt’s mercenaries interacting – the game very much has a ‘battalions are a game mechanic only’ but I want to know more about the mercenaries that travelled with Byleth and Jeralt… they must have had just as much of an impact on raising Byleth as Jeralt did! OCs are 100% welcome, let’s have some cute embarrassed Byleth around here!
Byleth being a nonbinary legend and inspiration for their trans students (cough Felix, Leonie, Ashe, Claude cough) and being really supportive and giving out good advice and teaching them to love themselves <3
Absolutely adore Byleth and Sothis interactions - some cute interactions between them with Byleth only just keeping a straight face as Sothis makes comments as they go through their day? Tbh Byleth’s shocked portrait always makes me laugh, so imagining some students seeing their shocked expression is quite amusing to me.

Kingdom Hearts Mermaids AU Characters: Lea, Isa, Sora, Riku Relationship: LeaIsa, (non-mentioned) SoRiKai Word Count: 1583
Note: I’m gonna be doing more of this AU, keep an eye out. I have a lot planned. Lea + Isa picture here. Other mermaid information here. I’m reposting to try to get this into the search because for some reason the first try wasn’t.
“Hey, Isa, you remember that time I almost killed you?”
“You’re going to have to be more specific than that, Lea. You do that regularly.”
Lea rolled his eyes and swam up and above Isa, reaching down and dangling his arms in front of his best friend as they swam together. He silently recalled when he had to be more careful around Isa, glad for that time being over. “Nah, you know what I mean. I’ve never actually almost killed you.”
“Didn’t you just ask about the time you did?”
“Yeah, yeah. I know.”
“I need you to think for a second, just a second. Why would I forget one of the most painful experiences I’ve ever had?” Isa paused his swimming and let Lea circle back so he could still be talking to Isa while looking down from above.
“I was kinda hoping you’d still be unwilling to say it like that, but you’re right. I was just thinking about how glad I am that I can touch you now.”
Isa reached up to prick his finger against one of Lea’s spines, it barely felt like anything after years of getting used to it.“It’s been ages, aren’t you used to being able to touch me without being incredibly careful by now?”
“Doesn’t mean it doesn’t make me happy.”
Isa laughed and looked up at Lea, reaching up and cupping his face to make sure they locked eyes. He couldn’t deny Lea being so outwardly sentimental was something he loved about him. “What was your point, Lea? Did you have one or did you just want to be a dork?”
Lea moved his hand over Isa’s and smiled. “I’m just thinking about it. I was really scared you weren’t going to be my friend anymore because of that and here we are, you’re in love with me and-”
“Don’t know who said that.”
“And I love you.”
“As you should.”
“You refused to let me know you were hurting that bad, you were really strong. You’re always so strong. I just love you.”
“Sappy. Is something going on?”
“No. I really was just thinking about how nice it is to not have that happen anymore. No poisoning my friend with hugs. Now I just bother my boyfriend by being clingy.”
“Sounds like you’ve had a couple changes, then. Why are we just talking about the almost killing me part of the story?”
“Because I’m trying to get to a point.”
“You said you didn’t have one.”
“Ugh! Just stop making fun of me for two seconds. You’re obnoxious.”
“Oh? Am I really the obnoxious one?”
“Yes! Why do I even like you?”
“I’m told you’re in love.”
“Wish I wasn’t in love with someone so mean to me.”
“I’m not mean to you. I could be. Do you want me to be mean to you?”
“No. Isa.”
“Then you know I’m being as nice as I can be?”
“Isa, can you just shut up and let me talk?”
“Hah, you think I’m able to keep you from talking? You?”
“Alright, shut up.”
“Really rude to keep saying that.” Moving up in the water to press his lips to Lea’s for a moment, Isa laughed. “You like hearing me talk. You enjoy my voice.”
“If you’d let me get to my point, Isa.” He left emphasis on the second syllable as he waited to be interrupted. When there was no interruption, he sighed. “I’ve been thinking about that because of how many things we still do come from not being able to touch you. When you kiss me outside of saying hey, it makes me remember watching Aeleus help you into the castle when I hugged you. Y’know, that should’ve had you paralyzed?”
“Yes, I’m aware. Are we really going over some backstory? Can’t we just continue this swim, head up to the beach, and relax there while it’s empty?”
“Am I not allowed to talk to my best friend anymore?”
“You are, but your boyfriend is getting impatient.”
“Then tell him to stop being an asshole.”
“He’s not about to listen, he’s just as stubborn as you are. Now, seriously, come on. There’s nothing we can’t talk about while relaxing somewhere even just a little safer than open ocean between islands.”
“Fine.”
“And I bet you don’t remember what your point was anyways.”
“I just told you what it was.”
“Oh? Was that it?”
“I hate you.”
Isa laughed and rolled his eyes, deciding to let that empty statement stand, returning to the other part of what he’d been saying. “We wouldn’t be between islands if you just remembered where we were going.”
“You could’ve told me I was swimming the wrong way.”
“You’re almost always ahead of me. It’s your fault for going so far so fast.”
“You could’ve noticed.”
“Excuse me for trusting the one who decided to take the lead.”
“You weren’t even trusting me, I know you better than that.”
“Fine, I was laughing at you for going the wrong way, but we didn’t run into any humans with nets, so it’s fine.”
“If that’s your metric, then, yeah, I guess. You sure you’re going to be fine doing your job when we get back?”
“If I’m too tired for the day, the world won’t fall apart if I don’t go in.”
“But you will.”
“Yes, I will. Of course I will. You will too.”
“Nah, I’m gonna skip out. Be irresponsible and sleep all day. Place won’t fall apart without me.”
Isa rolled his eyes and wrapped his hands around Lea’s wrists carefully, webbing between his fingers getting in the way of a full and comfortable grasp. He wasn’t going to say it aloud, but he really did want to just sit on the beach with Lea and look up at the moon until they were too dry to stay on land. “Lea, start moving, I want to get home eventually, but the moon is full tonight.”
“You’re the one who stopped?”
Isa didn’t respond to Lea and instead opted to swimming forward with a small tug of Lea’s arms before letting go to continue swimming. He could be much faster when he wanted to be, a tuna tail was much better suited to going quickly than anyone who had only met Isa alone would be led to believe. Lea had to fight to keep up with Isa.
“Hey, Isa, slow down.”
“You can keep up, I believe in you.”
“Why am I dating you?”
“Why am I dating someone so slow?”
“Ugh! Fine. I don’t want to race, though, so slow down a little bit?”
Isa fell back, swimming at Lea’s pace and bumping their hips together. Lea still had the tendency to be careful around other people, despite Isa being all but completely immune to his sting because of the constant exposure. Isa had no such care. Lea responded to the bump by wrapping his tail around Isa’s, taking a position most used for comfortable relaxing while not moving.
“You really don’t want to let me see the moon above the water tonight, do you?”
“We’re still moving. You know how to pull me around, I know you do.”
“You’re lucky your tail isn’t as short as your dad’s is.”
“And you’re not. Pull me along.”
“Don’t be lazy.”
“Too late. I’m comfortable. And I know you can do this for a significantly longer time.”
Isa just sighed, shaking his head at Lea’s dorky actions. He loved Lea a great deal, but sometimes it was difficult… this was not one of those times, Isa found, as he glanced back to look at Lea’s smirk.
They didn’t have that far to go, so the rest of their swim was in silence. They pulled themselves onto the deserted beach carefully and hacked the water up out of their lungs.
As soon as they were comfortably on the beach and breathing air, Lea flopped backwards into the sand and groaned. “I will never be used to that.”
“What?”
“Having to cough up that much water.”
“You’ll never get used to anything different than your first two years alive, will you?”
“Oh, shut up. You wanted to lay here and talk and look at the moon, so lay down with me.”
Isa rolled his eyes and laid down next to Lea, holding his arm out so he could be leaned against if Lea decided he wanted to. And of course Lea wanted to.
Just as Lea got comfortable, there was a sound of footsteps that was just too close for comfort. Lea moved away and began to slide back into the water and Isa followed behind him.
They got into the water just as a pair of human children locked eyes with them.
“Wait, no, don’t go!” One of the children called out to the mermaids, reaching his hand out only to have the other grab him and hold him back.
“Sora, leave them alone. Kairi didn’t want to be seen either.”
“Yeah, but… We’re friendly.”
The mermaids stared at the gently arguing children in confusion, slowly backing up in the water so they could have a good distance between them. Where had they picked up this human language?
Suddenly, Lea realized the humans had said a name.
“...Did you say Kairi?” Lea was too curious to continue the act of self preservation Isa was still anxious to do, but not without Lea. He knew that and he could see Isa ready to bolt, but he needed to know.
