You sit at your kitchen counter to do your work. It’s not exactly ideal; you can’t see them, and you’re certain your back will ache in the morning as punishment for using the tall bar chair for an hour and a half, but you make it work. The minutes pass, the girls continue to work on their assignments and help each other out when needed. It isn’t until a text chime blares out that you turn around and realize how long it’s been.

Ayame is looking down at her phone, reading the text with her arms still preoccupied with academics.

“Did your father get back to you?” you ask.

“He’s not my father,” Ayame snaps immediately, head snapping over to fix you with a fierce glare. “Despite what he and everyone else thinks, he is not my dad, so don’t call him that.”

You raise your hands in surrender, palms out. “Peace. Understood. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed.”

She seems to startle at that—her glare doesn’t pause but her brow furrows further in confusion and when she speaks it’s muttered more than angry. “Yeah. You shouldn’t’ve.”

“But I need to know he knows where you are.”

“He does,” she grumbles. “He’s stuck in traffic, he’ll be here soon.”

Your next door neighbor is the number two pro hero.

It’s a nice neighborhood—admittedly most of the inhabitants are getting on in years, and at times can be unbearably wealthy, but you’re not about to complain when you inherited your half of the duplex already paid off by your grandparents. It’s an unusual western-style house, connected on one side to a reflected twin, with three floors, three bedrooms (though you’ve converted one into an office), two (and a half) baths, and a shared rooftop terrace with the remains of planter boxes and a run-down little greenhouse that your grandfather once used to grow food; a nice place, something you’d never have been able to afford if you hadn’t come into it by luck.

The leftmost wall is shared with none other than the Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight, though contrary to what the name might suggest he’s actually a pretty okay neighbor. That is to say: an almost entirely absent one.

You don’t see the man very much. Hero work, you presume, keeps him more than busy; when he’s home there’s always a shiny, clearly expensive sports car in the driveway (you have no clue what kind but it looks like something a car nut would drool over) and you definitely see it gone more than not. The older ladies like to coo at him when he shows up—sometimes with another tall, built hero in tow, often with groceries in arm. You’ve only talked to him a few times but he remembers your name, and he gives a brusque little nod of acknowledgement whenever you wave at him in greeting. He’s not exactly known in the news as the friendliest type but you’re never felt entirely unwelcome when you’ve gone over to let him know that you’ll be on vacation for a week, or that you’re expecting a handyman to stop by to fix your sink. And that’s just about all the friendliness one inherently needs from a neighbor, so you’re content with the whole relationship.

That kind of goes out the window when the girls show up, because you’re too meddling for your own good and nobody, not even (or perhaps especially) an incredibly busy top hero, is prepared to suddenly take on two children without warning.

you move into a new neighborhood on your 24th birthday.

it's a quaint house, fully furnished with wooden panels lining its contemporary build. you consider yourself lucky for finding a place this well-kept at the price point you offered. you're honestly surprised that suguru, your now landlord, accepted your application.

the area sits a few kilometers on the outskirts of the city, but it feels neither too quiet nor too busy; a perfect balance with an impressive view of the rising sun this early in the morning. that, and the people seem friendly, greeting you as they pass by. they even offer to help you haul things out of your car and into the house.

to the right of your house is one that holds the same design elements at yours, although a bit darker in its tones. it's sleek and modern, befitting of a bachelor.

"you must be the new tenant," a voice speaks from behind you, syrupy and smooth. you didn't even hear his footsteps.

when you turn around, you're met with a tall man who greets you with his arms held behind his back as he tilts his head low. there's a calmness that radiates off him, a sort of gentleness that signals he’s someone you can trust.

you nod, introducing yourself with your hand outstretched towards him.

"suguru," he replies as his fingers grab yours delicately. your eyes widen in surprise, recognizing the name, and he merely chuckles in return, a soft laugh that brings out kindness in his eyes.

over shared breakfasts by your porch and impromptu dinners over at his, you grow a liking to suguru. he's polite and thoughtful, often knocking at your door in the mornings to offer you a cup of tea to watch the sunrise.

hues of pinks, purples, and orange blend to illuminate his face perfectly. the sun is beautiful in front you, peeking between clouds as it inches away from the horizon, but something about him is infinitely more magnetic. your stare is immediately drawn to his lips, smooth and supple, before it meets his gaze.

you don't know what's worse―wanting to lean in or be pulled by the look in his eyes.

he fixes things that break in your home, always somehow knowing just when to show up. at first, it was your windows, the one by the attic, too high and dangerous for you to climb; then, it was your kitchen sink, its pipes regurgitating the water going down the drain. he's begun to bring you your groceries too, often asking for a list of what you need when he makes trips out of town.

your days blur easily when you're with suguru, and time passes almost fleetingly as you find your hours filled with soft laughs and touches so delicate you sometimes wonder whether they're real.

it should be noted, you think, how much time has passed since you first met him―an anniversary of some sort.

you learn that he owns both houses―his and the one you're currently renting. it once belonged to a friend who had to move for bigger, greater responsibilities elsewhere, he'd said.

"why did you decide on renting?" you ask him one night, over wine and candlelight.

your fingers fiddle with his as he sits you on his lap, this thing between you growing more intimate lately. he rubs his thumb along your thigh, resting his chin by your shoulder.

when you ask suguru about it, he dismisses the question quickly, saying, "must have moved," as he urges you to take another sip of your tea.

you dream of them that night, on bare streets; it wakes you in a cold sweat, the image of your neighborhood reduced to just your house and suguru's.

he frames it on his bedside, and when you wake in his room the next morning, it greets you along with the back of his head, fast asleep.

your eyes flit to the view outside his window, the same pinks, purples, and orange hues. you tilt your head curiously, brows furrowing. the sun stays at the same spot above the horizon, and when you look at the painting again, the clouds hold the same position and shape.

a chill washes over you, your hearbeat pounding.

another bag of groceries from suguru. now that you think about it, you don't think you've ever gone to the grocery store since moving.

"is it important?" he responds, slightly snappy. you've begun to notice that he hates it when you ask lately.

For the last six months, you haven’t been able to get the idea out of your head to switch fields. It’s not that you don’t enjoy being a teacher by any means, but something about being a nurse has intrigued you ever since your stay at the hospital almost a year ago.

You’ve been searching the internet for courses catching your eye and finally found one. You can do it in the evenings, so you can still work while following it. Now, all you can do is tell your husband about your plans.

“What’s going on in that brain of yours, Beautiful?” He asks as you sit at the dinner table, shoveling the food from one side to the next without actually taking a bite. You squeeze your eyes and find the courage to tell him what’s been circling through your head.

“I-it’s nothing, Ari,” you say with a smile, though it’s not very convincing. He can see something occupying your mind and won’t stop until he knows exactly what’s happening.

“Doesn’t look like nothin’ to me; you haven’t touched your food at all,” he answers with a raised brow, and that’s when you know you can’t keep it inside any longer. He reaches over the table to grab your hand, rubbing his thumb soothingly over your knuckles.

“I want to switch fields and become a nurse. I’ve been looking at fitting courses for the last six months, and I found one last week,” you tell him in a rushed breath, and the heat spreads over your cheeks, a mix of shyness and embarrassment taking over.

“Really? That’s amazing, Beautiful! If I’d known sooner, I would have helped you find a fitting course,” he says enthusiastically, and every single doubt you had melted away as you finally dare to look at your husband. He’s always been nothing short of supportive of you, and it makes your heart flutter every single time.

“So… You’re not mad at me for doing this? I know we have plans for our future, and this might get in the way of those,” you say softly, but Ari is sure to wipe every last doubt away.

“God, I would never be able to get mad at you for following your dreams, Beautiful! Just as long as you promise to put on a sexy nurse outfit for me now and again, I’ll be more than supportive of you,” he says with a wink, and a broad smile spreads over your face at his words.

“Deal!” And with that, you finally dive into your food, and Ari is glad you’re feeling better. During the rest of dinner, you tell him everything, and that night, he even helps you out as you’re signing up for the course, followed by a night of passion as he constantly tells you how proud he is of you.

The following day, you wake up in your husband’s arms, snuggled right into his chest, the hair tickling your cheek as his chest keeps rising and falling. His hand is caressing your back gently, pressing soft kisses on the crown of your head.

“Mornin’, Beautiful,” Ari says as he feels you stirring awake, and you lift your head to press a kiss to his soft, plump lips.

“Good morning,” you say before snuggling even closer to him, your naked bodies intertwined under the covers. You don’t want to get out of bed yet, and Ari seems to have the same plan as he pulls you closer, his beard tickling against your face as it makes you giggle. You will never get enough of moments like these.

“So, how does it feel to be starting nursing school soon?” Ari asks in his rough, deep morning voice, sending the butterflies in your stomach off.

“Good, been wanting this for so long that I’m thrilled I found the courage to tell you and sign up,” you tell him. You can’t wait to see what becoming a nurse will be like, and you’re excited to follow this path with your husband by your side.

The first few months of nursing school were going well, but now you have a critical exam coming up that has you stressed out beyond belief. You have studied the material inside and out for the last few weeks, but there are still some things that you can’t seem to remember.

You’re pacing through the living room with your notes in your hand, repeating everything out loud until they lose all their meaning altogether. When you’re about to give up, Ari walks in after working in his office all day, and he can see the nerves radiating off you from a mile away.

“I think it’s time for a break, Beautiful,” he says, walking over to you and wrapping his long arms around you, pulling you into his chest and calming you down.

“But I have to study, Ari! I can’t take a break,” you say, and he can see your bottom lip wobble slightly, tears threatening to spill over as the nerves begin to win the battle.

“Of course, you can, and I’ll take one with you, okay? Maybe we can watch an episode of your favorite series as I massage your feet and you drink some tea,” he offers, and you give in, not being able to say no to something so enticing.

“You know, whenever I talk to other people in my class, I sometimes get the feeling their partners aren’t even half as supportive as you are,” you tell him, and you groan as he massages your feet, and you melt into his touch.

“I like to be the exception, Beautiful,” he says, and with those words, you enjoy the rest of your massage before he helps you study, and with his help, the last information is quickly saved into your brain, too.

When you get your exam results a week later, you can’t wait to tell him.

“Ari, Ari! Guess what?! I passed my exam because of you!” You say as you jump into his arms, and he hugs you close, pressing kisses on your neck as he tells you how proud he is. Not long after, he’s making you fall apart the best way he knows how.

You and your friends decided to go out to a club. Pablo was abroad for a game and had been for awhile, but he was coming back next Monday. Your friends decided to take you to the club since all while Pablos been gone, you seemed different as you were missing him so much.

" girl it's Saturday night!! Go partying with us! " your best friend said, which made you agree. All your friends said that it'd be harmless fun, like it's always been between you girls.

You all were wearing matching red dresses, and you sent a picture to Pablo and to tell him that you were going out.

Later at the club you and your friends were dancing. When you got tired, you went over to the bar and ordered (your favorite drink). A man walked up to you and started talking to you, not flirting- yet.

The two of you continued talking, until he tried to touch your knee. You immediately moved your leg away and gave him a ' what the fuck!? ' look. One of your friends saw and went up to throw guy, flirting with him and dragging him away from you. But you got up and left to the girls bathroom, calling Pablo.
