book 7 spoilers <3 very long rant im sorry!!

it was never meant to be this way. when he was such an ass to us in the prologue, when he laid those pesky remarks upon us and immediately assuming that we got into NRC as a janitor because we weren't good enough without any prior knowledge of how we were brought here against our will and having to adapt to such an unfamiliar environment where everything - trends, names, history, and even the currency - were different. he didn't know about the throbbing headache we had while the headmage was explaining the school's curriculum and suddenly bringing up the word "magic" into the conversation like it was foreign language.

he thinks he's above us just because we're a clueless student who couldnt cast any spells and took up the miserable job just for the sake of money and to live. he had this one-way "not my problem!!" mindset about us that he dipped the moment after because he never would have suspected that we would grow to be something more important, something more irreplaceable in his life.

he never meant to test the waters, and he's drowning by mistake.

his concern for you gets more obvious as each book advances (or was it always obvious??). you're just an otherworlder oblivious to the dangers that lurk in twisted wonderland, so it's only casual for him to fret about when you've been taken into scarabia with minimal escape routes, to be the first one to notice that you were missing among the entourage of people that have been kidnapped, to be the only one to point out that you weren't in the best condition AND suggesting to bring you back home in case the party was all too much. he knows how vulnerable you are, and he jumps into action as quick as possible because that's basically his brand. nothing deeper!!! (unknown dangers lurk around you on the daily, but you lurk in his mind so much more than he lets on. you're probably more used to the dangers of magic than he's used to the thought of you occupying his mind 24/7. isnt that ironic)

and he didn't consider the complications of how dangerous it could be for the headmage to send us back to our original world, possibly damaging the very fabrics of time and space and ceasing to exist while transporting - he just instantly goes to the part where the news was positive and that we could travel between Twisted Wonderland and earth in one piece, blocking out his surroundings just to see your smile, as that was possibly the happiest you could have ever been in front of him.

imagine each time he hangs out with someone new, or if someone has gained a romantic interest in him once you've left, he tries to find a part of "you" in them in his peripheral vision. whether they have an ounce of bravery that you had, whether they're as understanding as you are to know that he isn't just a human built of jokes and pranks, whether they won't doubt him like the rest did - as you were the only one who truly believed in his capability to truly lead the rest out of danger.

he could beg for other people to believe in him, to see that his skills could draw out much more if he really wanted to, but he didn't have to do that with you. in a flashing moment of possible failure, he turned to you in a heartbeat, uncharacteristically, desperately calling out for you to save him because he had no idea what was happening. he almost started to lose himself and quickly realises that the power he was wielding so suddenly wasn't some lousy spell, that it could possibly cause someone's life, and you were there to steady him when he needed it the most. a rarity of a scene he entrusted his entire body to you with. you believed in him. you ARE the betterment of him.

you held his hand like a vow, to protect each other and strengthen through every obstacle and turmoil that drives you one step closer to becoming a better version of yourself. your hand, tightly coiled around his, radiated the warmth and comfort he needed in his times of darkness and inner conflict.

it should've been you. you're perfect.

and that's why his dream still has you in it. it doesn't have to be one way or the other, you can simply go back and forth to his world and your own in just a snap! he could never dream of you leaving his sight and grasp, hindering him from ever telling you how much you actually meant. he has all the time in the world.

and that's what he wants, but his heart says otherwise, and that's fine. he just wants you to be safe and see him for who he is. you inspired him to take pride in his name, as an ace can do anything!!

I am so sick of the Eurylochus slander, just saw someone legit say that Eurylochus intentionally gave someone the torch to save his own skin during Scylla while watching the livestream animatic. Even though the animatic made pretty clear he did not know at the beginning what the torches meant. Even though he only gave someone else the torch so that he would have his hands free to save another person and once he realized what the torches mean, he tried to run back to the dude he gave his torch to save him. Like, his face of absolute horror as he realized what was happening. Like, the animatic spelled it out so utterly clearly I didn't think it was possible for someone to misunderstand it.

And yet, people are actually accusing him of doing what Odysseus did, what the fuck.

jiang cheng at the club

i answered kind of speedily but hm blorbo should not be at the club

teenage era? the most debatable era tbh. on one hand - for one, if jiang cheng goes, he's going because he thinks that's what the cool kids his age should be doing, rather than because it's what he actually wants to do. for two, if he goes he's certainly going with wei wuxian. there's a good chance he'll have a good time with wei wuxian, but there's also a good chance that he'll spend the entire experience way too high-strung about wei wuxian doing something stupid (guaranteed) that will make both him and yunmeng jiang look stupid (not guaranteed but still likely) and/or put wei wuxian in danger (also very likely). there's also an even higher chance that wei wuxian will end up fucking off to chat/flirt/etc with other people (eg. lan wangji who wei wuxian also managed to drag to the club, who then gets drunk and thus wei wuxian now has to babysit), thereby leaving jiang cheng all by his lonesome. jiang cheng can probably talk to strangers, but he came here to have fun with wei wuxian and now wei wuxian has ding dong ditched. bonus points if wei wuxian promised to be designated driver and now jiang cheng has to uber home.

on the other hand - teenage wei wuxian and jiang cheng are definitely making the club more fun. mostly wei wuxian. and, despite all of the above, jiang cheng is probably having a good time...most of the time...too.

adult era: nah. jiang cheng is busy. it would be nice if he could let loose and forget about everything for a few hours, but he would not do that. realistically he'd just spend the entire time stressing about his growing to-do list, and the music would give him a headache.

also, everything at the club would remind him of wei wuxian. wei wuxian, certified party animal, was almost certainly the one dragging jiang cheng to the club in their youth; jiang cheng probably does in fact have some happy memories of clubbing with wei wuxian. but those happy memories are gonna curdle into depressing ones the moment he steps through the doors and is reminded of wei wuxian again. the photos of wei wuxian doing a keg stand behind the bar are making him miserable, and he in turn is going to make it everyone else's problem.

postcanon era: also nah. mostly because he'd almost certainly run into jin ling et al. sneaking into the club with fake IDs, and now everyone's yelling.

on the other hand....maybe he and wei wuxian can eventually reconcile over a night of partying they're both frankly way too old for. or maybe when they wake up the next day in the same ditch with matching hangovers.

keep thinking about this page, particularly in conjunction with this post discussing ciel's use of his three wishes when originally creating the guidelines for their contract. to quote:

I love that Ciel gets three wishes from Sebastian and he used them all to make Sebastian into someone he can trust: never lie to him, always follow his orders, protect him and never betray him. He’s a traumatized child with self esteem issues and trust issues, so perhaps it’s only to be expected—but I think that if it had been anyone else; for example if r!Ciel was the one who survived, he might not have necessarily asked for something like these.

the question of Trust when it comes to o!ciel, and specifically who he feels that he can trust following the incredible violation of his faith that occurs throughout his time in the cult, is interesting enough as is-- but especially so when it comes to the topic of his relationship with sebastian specifically.

to state this more directly: i don't think these two points at all contradict one another. ciel isn't lying here when he says that sebastian is the one he can trust the least-- that is exactly why he felt the need to use his wishes to make sebastian any degree of trustworthy in the first place.

you could almost say that what ciel actually trusts has hardly anything to do with sebastian himself, but instead o!ciel's own ability to control him. that's essentially the gamble he's staking his life on-- that sebastian will respect the guidelines of their contract just long enough for o!ciel to enact his revenge the way that he wants to.

the fact that he takes the Earl Ciel Phantomhive name in the process of all this can't be ignored either. ultimately, the one thing that o!ciel can still put his faith in is that of Ciel-- the one person who was always on his side, always supporting him and pulling him along, and never betrayed him.

initially, anyway. clearly, by now, the title has grown to encompass more than the body or memories of the individual it was originally tied to-- the significance is in the Title, the Idea, the spirit and memory and grief entrusted within it. the soul, even? though perhaps that's pushing it a little too much. r!ciel is never coming back, and no recreation, no matter how accurate, could ever truly be him. death is final, and absolute-- it must be.

point is, the trust issues run deep, for obvious reasons. still, i think o!ciel definitely does trust sebastian to some degree-- probably more than he cares to, considering how reliant he is on him and how they've been mutually twisting into something more and more codependent as the years go on, but still. he made this contract at his lowest point, when his trust and faith in Anything was at an all time low-- but o!ciel isn't locked in a cage anymore. which will it be, to win out in the end? conscious, logical aversion to the indescribably powerful being you've sold yourself to? or the incredible force of habit, sinking you back into the comfortable routine of master and servant, give and take?

frankly, in the case of o!ciel this is a pretty fucking obvious answer to me-- he has never once demonstrated himself to give up so easily, and especially not when he has already commit himself so far, to a goal so clear and distinct. on the other side, in the case of sebastian, though... i suppose we'll just have to see how much that demonic hunger tempers whatever sympathy he can scrounge up for the human that entertains him the most.
