Random Wild Kratts Headcanons: Shopping At IKEA
Martin genuinely loves going to Ikea like its just a casual hangout spot for him.
He gets sad every time he passes the play area because he wishes he was small enough to go in the ball pit again.
Loves getting the meatballs.
And he can't leave without getting some chocolate ice cream.
Chris knows exactly what he came for and doesn't want to waste time looking around.
Can actually call the furniture by the Swedish names like a nerd.
Only looks at stuff that they actually needs and is usually the first person to be done shopping.
Gets an ice cream or lays down on one of the couches while he waits for everyone.
Aviva likes to look at the animal plushes and has to resist the urge to buy one every time.
Especially if she sees a panda.
Started crying when she saw that big panda plush
She can put the IKEA furniture together but doesn't want to (real).
Says she doesn't want any food but then takes food from Martin and Jimmy's plates when they are not looking.
Koki buys a beanbag chair for her room because Jimmy took hers.
She spends way too much time looking at the plants.
Gets the chicken strips from the bistro and shares a cake with Aviva.
She's usually the second person to be done shopping because she really only comes for the food and the plants.
Jimmy only likes to go for the food. He makes that VERY clear.
The only one besides Chris or Koki that can be trusted to push the cart.
Aviva and Martin play too much or accidentally run people over with the cart or even loose it.
Falls asleep in a display bed for majority of the trip.
One time the crew accidentally left him in the store.
Zach low-key hates going.
he hates the crowds so much
Gets mad when he can't find any of the employees to tend to his every need.
Gets confused by the arrows on the floor.
Has his Zachbots push him around in a cart.
Aviva and Zach are the type to go into one of the kitchen displays and pretend to be a toxic couple having an argument.
At first they were playing but then it gets so heated and intense that strangers can't tell if they're being for real or not but they are invested.
It's like a whole Soap Opera.
Dabio buys the cute ikea shark.
Donita thinks most of the furniture is ugly.
She likes to stare at herself in the mirrors every time she passes by one.
She likes some of the chandeliers too.
Gourmand is literally the only person ever who can build the furniture without even looking at the directions.
Takes the little pencils too just because he can.

How do you balance maintaining a consistent writing routine?
Oh boi if only I could actually do that. Ok here we go~
Writing Creating Consistently
Creating consistently is one of the biggest challenges for any creative out there, not just writers. But despite so many people experiencing the same exact problem there is no universal solution. And the reason for that is simple: every person is different and the reason behind their struggles are just as diverse as humanity itself. For some it’s just difficulty keeping a habit alive, for others it’s circumstances of life and for people like me it can even just be their neuro-type.
But it’s not like there’s nothing you can do. So, here are two ideas to try to write more consistently, for both the organised and the chaotic:
Journaling +
This idea works best for those who don’t struggle too much to keep a habit alive or those who already journal or do something similar regularly anyway. Basically all you do is add a daily writing task to your routine. It can be anything like writing a short paragraph, working on character details or even just researching something. What exactly you do doesn’t matter as long as you’re doing something. But the most important thing to keep in mind is to keep the task tiny.
Once we start doing something, more often than not, much more will follow naturally. But if we make the task too big, we risk ending up dreading it. For that reason, your daily task should be something easy that can be done in no more than 5 minutes. That way you’ll get the satisfaction of doing something almost every day and don’t disappoint and demotivate yourself with piled up days of being unable to fullfill your goals.
Tiny Book
This technique works best for the more chaotic (and/or audhd) type and is the one I personally use for both writing and art. The basic idea of this technique is to simply always have something on you to catch your random bursts of inspiration throughout the day. For most people this will probably be their smartphone and maybe one of those cheap mini pens with the rubber stylus at the end. If you don’t like the notes app or just writing stuff down in a text document (or a hundred separate ones) here’s some apps that I use(d in the past):
Obsidian - very similar to a notes app, except you can link documents and build your own little Wikipedia. Including the clickable links within text and all.
Concepts - gives you an infinite canvas to take notes and draw stuff like mind maps. You’ll need a stylus for this one if you don’t want to write with your fingers. There are in app purchases but you really don’t need them and I’m using the free version with no problems too.
Campfire Blaze - (also as website) is specifically built to plan and share your writing projects. It has a lot of pre built functions to plan characters, maps, lore, magic systems etc.
Story Plotter - very similar to campfire except the focus is on structuring your story. A lot of people swear by it but I personally can’t give much more details because it just isn’t my style of program.
If you’re more of the traditional type though, get yourself a small notebook to always (and I mean always) carry around. Preferably a durable one that fits in your pocket and has a loop for a pencil. Also I recommend using a short technical pencil with an eraser at the end to avoid having to carry that and a sharpener around. Remember, we want the most comfortable quick and easy access so it doesn’t become a hassle to always have access to your materials.
On that note,
Why oh why, IKEA, did you stop making those cute but sturdy notebooks? That’s it, we’re breaking up. Søstrene Grene, you’re my new paper supply girlfriend. You may be more dainty and delicate, less sturdy than Ikea, but at least you’re there for me.
Ok but seriously, tip for the artists: søstrene grene has those teeny tiny blank books with really nice paper (easy 100+ pages) that fit into even a women’s front pocket and are perfect for quick thumbnailing. Just make sure to enforce the binging by putting some washi tape ore sum around the edges and glue it down on the backing bc they fall apart easily.
Anyway
Happy writing creating <3

Medieval style Ikea MOPPE repaint (hand-painted in acrylic with nickle-brass fixtures) This project took forever to plan, paint, and finish. But it is done after 4 weeks of continuous love and labor and 6 weeks of waiting for the knobs. Within the dragon, storage for my plastic gems, diamond-dots, and so on. Within the rabbit, my stationary. Within the peacock, jewelry odds and ends, findings clasps, and charms. Within the magpie, tools for sculpting along with odds and ends for projects. Within the weasel my labeling tools. Within the snake my pencils, stencils, and the like. The floral design on the sides is a stencil.

DIY Side Table
Project by Silvia Song:
Finding a simple, modular piece of furniture that is reasonably priced but also well made can be hard sometimes. IKEA provides some decent options, but sometimes you just want something made out of beautiful, sturdy, solid wood. Thankfully, designer Silvia Song has created a great tutorial for a simple wood side table with a sliding drawer. If you’re interested in getting into woodworking and furniture making but don’t know where to start, this is the tutorial for you. She’s made a lovely piece with clean lines and a basic form that requires only a few tools. If you want a fun building project for a fall weekend, you should definitely try it out. Thanks for sharing, Silvia! — Kate
I chose this project as an exercise to see if I could design and build a simple drawer unit in the spirit of Enzo Mari’s Autoprogettazione (self-design). I wanted to use just a few simple hand tools and assemble each part by cross cutting only off-the-shelf lumber. The biggest challenge was to find a way to work with the actual dimensions of lumber to come up with puzzle-like pieces simple enough for a novice to build, but not lacking in versatility. My intentions were to keep things as simple and organic as possible, but you can easily personalize it by staining or painting the wood. I really enjoyed designing it, and I hope you enjoy building it! — Silvia
Materials
hammer
cross-cut hand saw
engineered square or 90-degree triangle
sanding block
pencil
lumber: (3) 1” x 6” x 6’, (1) 1” x 4” x 6’, (1) 1” x 3” x 6’, (1) 1” x 2” x 6’
box of #16 x 1 1/4″ wire nails
Instructions
1. Let’s begin by building the frame. Cut lumber to the dimensions below using a right angle tool (engineered square or 90-degree triangle) and lightly sand the edges.
(6) — 1” x 2” x 11” corner supports (for lateral support)
(4) — 1” x 6” x 18” top and bottom panel
(4) — 1” x 6″ x 20” side panel
2. Side panel assembly: A minimum of four nails per 1 x 2 support is required. It is crucial to nail directly into the center of the 1 x 2s. These pieces will support the frame laterally once it is upright.
3. There should be a 2 1/2″ space between the first and second 1 x 2s as shown in the photo. Add an extra 1/16″ to allow the drawer to slide easily in and out.
4. Let’s go ahead and complete the frame by assembling the top and bottom panels as well. Place (2) 1″ x 6″ x 18″ planks and nail them directly into the 1 x 2 supports. Make sure the nails are driven directly into the center of the supports.
You should now have a completed frame that looks like this:
5. To assemble the drawer, cut lumber to the dimensions specified below.
(2) — 1” x 6“ x 15” front and back planks
(2) — 1” x 4” x 9.5” side planks (one on each side)
(2) — 1” x 3” x 11” outermost side planks
(2) — 1” x 4” x 15” bottom end planks
(1) — 1” x 3” x 15” bottom middle plank
6. To assemble the bottom of the drawer, use (1) 1″ x 3″ x 15″ plank sandwiched between (2) 1″ x 4″ x 15″ planks. Place the 1″ x 4″ x 9.5″ side planks on both ends of the bottom planks and nail them down securely.
Here is what the completed side looks like:
7. Take (1) 1″ x 3″ x 11″ outermost side plank and align as shown in the photo. This will create a lip underneath the front and back panels to allow the drawer to be pulled out.
8. Then center the piece along the innermost side plank so that the edge of the 1 x 3 is flush with the front and back planks, and nail them down. Repeat for the opposite side.
Here is the finished drawer assembly:
9. Finally, slide the drawer into the frame.
Done!

It's so easy that it's funny. Also a good comparison for me is putting computer shit together because x literally only fits in y and there are very few ways you could mess it up. Once you've done a couple pieces you can assemble any IKEA furniture just based off the direction the holes are facing. Literally.
It's also either usually MDF board and contact paper or soft wood so like...if it's slightly unaligned, you could probably fix it with a pencil and some free time if you needed to.
rip to you guys but i love assembling ikea furniture its so fun its like legos

1970’S Orange Kitchenette
Today we are going to talk about this 1970’s orange kitchenette. This is the space that it’s at the very back of my warehouse. I wanted this space to have a lot of color, a lot of impact, and that was reflective of the mid-century modern period and also of my personal style. And wow do I believe that we achieved that!
Let me take you back to the beginning for a moment, so you understand the process and how we developed this space.
In the first before picture, you will see the space empty just before I received it when I leased it. As you may have noticed it has an odd shape because it accommodates an oil tank on the right corner and a bump in that makes it narrower than the rest of the space. I knew I wanted to add the large shelves in there and I knew my work area was going to end up being there as well.
First, it was just a dumping ground for tools and my personal collection of vintage small kitchen appliances. Then I started organizing it and the design started taking shape in my head but I still didn’t have the right shelves I wanted to use. I had been scrolling through Facebook Marketplace, eBay, etc. looking for something that would fit in the space and the design. I had been doing sketches on my book with different vintage furniture layouts and playing with color combinations but nothing seem to make me entirely happy.
I struggled for a few days scrolling through hundreds of listings of shelves, I was thinking about getting something from Ikea but then I convinced myself that I would find something I would like.
Normally, even though I explore several layouts for a space, it is not so hard for me to arrive at one that I really like. The reason why this was hard, was because I needed it to function as a kitchen, a workspace and I wanted it to look period MCM. So I knew the layout had to be perfect in order not to choose between function and form.
It was about 11:30 pm when a listing pop up on my marketplace screen and I saw the perfect pair of shelves. I quickly message the owner and he said he could meet me the next morning for me to pick them up. (I know, I was that annoying person who messaged him in the middle of the night) but in my defense, I thought he was going to get back to me the next morning.
So, he was super nice, met me the very next morning, had them ready to go, and helped me load them in my vehicle. So I had the shelves but I still hadn’t settled on the color combination. It was that night, after I brought the shelves to the warehouse that I was obsessively thinking about the space. I went to bed after I did the final layout in my sketchbook and fell asleep.
All of a sudden, it was 2:45 am when I saw the space in my head with the color combination the way I wanted it. I turn the light on, grabbed my sketchbook and coloring pencils, and started coloring the sketch I had done before bed. My hands flew switching from color to color in order not to lose my idea. When I was happy with the result I looked at it and my body felt expansive and excited. Ahhhh, happy place!
The next day the process of finding the right fabrics, cabinet paint colors, and buying materials started. I went to the hardware store and bought the materials to build the lower cabinet that would house the microwave and fridge.
In this picture, you will see another cabinet I had thought about using for the wall above the counter. And while I like the idea of a tall and narrow cabinet there I felt this particular one was better used on top of the other shelves, to house my collection of appliances. So after I built part of the lower cabinet I went home and like every evening, I took my dog for a walk. It was a few streets away from home when I went by a house that had put out a bunch of furniture out on the curb. Most of it was of no interest to me but there was a headboard that had potential. An idea started to form in my head, so I went back after my walk and picked it up.
After doing some carpentry to modify and reinforce the piece, I proceeded to prime and paint it orange to fit my design. A few days later I was hanging it up on the wall and loading it with all the dry goods I had.
If you looked at my sketch I had originally thought about doing a striped rug in the kitchen, but quickly my dogs and my work brought me to the reality that I needed something that I could mop and clean better. So I decided to purchase a sheet of linoleum and after I installed it the entire space just looked soooo much better and larger.
And to give the final touch to this space my beautiful sister, who knows me so well and is such a beautiful soul sent me a box full of candles in the perfect colors to fit into my kitchenette. These candles are not vintage but the original design is, she found in a vintage magazine from 1961. You should have heard the screech I did when I opened the box.
And that is all friends! That is the story of how I designed and adapted this space to fit my style and my functionality needs.

The Griefers Go To IKEA
I've had this sitting in my head for a few days and I finally decided to put it in words lol. Also I haven't been to an IKEA in like five years and the closest one to me is in another country so take what's in here with a grain of salt
Let's say they just moved into their shared house and they're in desperate need of furniture--better furniture than the crappy ones they had from previous living arrangements--so they take the trip to the Swedish wonderland of IKEA
Balsam, Tulsi, and Elowen actually want new furniture, Lucan is there mainly to look at all the cool stuff, and Sage is just there for the meatballs
He wants to just go to the cafeteria but Tulsi grabs him by the scruff and drags him along with the group
They test out all the couches that can fit the five of them. I don't think all five of them would be on the couch at any given time but it's nice to have. They'd just sit on the floor anyways lol
Lucan and Tulsi steal as many tiny pencils as they can. Tiny things are cute and they have too many
They have two lists, one for actual purchases and one for whatever Lucan and Sage want that definitely won't be bought
Balsam likes looking at the kitchen model things, running his hands over the islands and appliances and imagining himself using them, in a fancy apartment, with the people he cares about
Sage lays down in all the beds in the bedroom models and invites everyone who passes by to "test it out with him." Tulsi tells him to stop before he gets kicked out
Elowen and Tulsi look at all the fancy desks. Elowen gives me nice desk vibes, and Tulsi wants something for her little office/workspace
Show them one of those desks that switch between sitting and standing, they'll eat that up like groceries
Lucan wants a cool hanging egg chair! You know the kind, but he's afraid that he's too tall and heavy for it. He's a hunk with muscles made for hugging
Balsam wants to look at wall art, so he'll be there. You guys go on without him, he'll be staring at a painting of a cow for two hours
Lucan likes looking at the kids section, he thinks it's all cute and cool. Elowen secretly likes it too but again no one will ever know
You know when they made stuffed animals out of kid's drawings submitted to them? Sage picks the stupidest one there and gives it to Tulsi like "here's your new friend Mr. Pissbaby." Tulsi says she hates it but she clings it to her chest if anyone tries to touch it
Before they go to the lower level to actually get the stuff, they stop by the cafeteria! The boys have been whining about how hungry they are for the past half hour. They're big boys, they need to eat a lot to keep their physicality up
I don't know what exactly they serve there except meatballs, but everyone gets meatballs. It's tradition, you always get the meatballs
Elowen tries to steal food from Sage and he almost stabs her with a knife. Not Tulsi though, Tulsi can have as much food as she wants
After they eat, they go down to the basement and scan the shelves for the names/numbers they wrote down. Safe and Lucan are bored out of their fluffy little tails so they go off to fuck around
The one I last went to had a smaller cafe section with ice cream and stuff so they go there and eat and chill on their phones. They get smoothies for everyone else. Sage tries to steal from Elowen's but Lucan stops him
Finally, after half an hour of looking and three carts (the stuff they got was too big for just one), they're finally done! They go to the parking lot and open up the back of their car and, after many tries, they shove it all in the back
Maybe they should get a bigger car....or another one......

“Jungkook, you teased me. You took advantage of my feelings. You used me,” you don’t dare to let yourself cry. Water pools at your eyes, the excess brimming over and threatening to fall. Yet with practiced poise, you keep yourself at bay, the moisture glistening in your lashes and making your eyes sparkle with pain. “But most of all, you’re a shitty friend.”
He thought you’d just be mad that he ditched you on Friday, but you’re livid about everything.
Did he get all the signs wrong back in the chapel? Did you not want him? Did you not like it? He’s most certain you liked it, but the way you spit venom at him yesterday made it sound like it was years and years of pent-up frustration culminating to this very moment.
It’s because you’re a bad friend,” Namjoon says the words clear as day, throwing an amber gummy eraser at Jungkook’s hunched figure.
No one’s in the studio except for them. Namjoon is an overachiever, and Jungkook looks up to Namjoon’s eye for design. It’s only natural for him to cling to the upperclassman.
Namjoon leans on his Ikea wheelie, and Jungkook doesn’t understand the physics of how Namjoon’s large torso doesn’t topple over the plastic chair. He runs his hand through his caramel brown locks, playing with a graphite pencil between his lips. “Think about it. This girl’s practically in love with you her entire life, and all of a sudden one night ruins it. What’d you do?”
“My usual,” Jungkook sighs.
“Your usual stinks,” Namjoon chuckles, swiveling around to put a pin on his corkboard, “for one night, you couldn’t keep it in your pants?”
“But it’s not my fault she feels betrayed or whatever. I didn’t promise to watch over her like I’m her keeper. She’s an adult.”
“An adult who trusted another adult she’s known for over twenty years,” Namjoon tuts, “and this school’s pretty small. I was at that party too. I heard the stuff Jimin and Nayeon were saying.”
“What stuff?”
Namjoon exhales, looking at his abandoned work. He loves Jungkook, really. Sometimes he gets a little carried away and takes advantage of his freedom, but he’s a good kid taking a detour.
“I wasn’t sure at first because your friend walked out of there pretty fast. But I think she ran out crying.”
Jungkook feels like a deflating balloon as he trudges on home. Quickly losing air as he takes the elevator up the stairs, wanting to melt between his sheets and forget about this day. Once he makes it to his floor his eyes flicker to the amount of packages lined up by your door. Savage x Fenty, Sephora, Redken. He wonders what you’ve been up to today, trying to decipher it between your mail.
He has his key jammed in right when the elevator dings, and he gets his answer. You’re stumbling down the hallway, dressed in a clingy brown plaid number hiked up your thighs, paired with white thigh highs and heeled lace up boots. A mix of two styles, Jungkook concludes that Sana probably put you up to this, sticking to your comfort zone yet branching out into more mainstream fashions. Accompanied with your styled hair and minimal makeup, it’s a good look.
Jungkook leaves his stuff by the door, walking over to where you’re stumbling like a Bambi on ice. “Bunny, are you drunk?” maybe it’s because it’s nighttime, but his voice is soft and subtle, “how’d you get home?”
“G-get away from me,” you weakly shuffle away from his grasp, sliding against the door.
There’s a gap between Jungkook’s arms, left open in case you stumble again. However you tense your muscles and move to your front door.
“I hate you,” you mumble into the wood, pushing yourself forward to leave Jungkook in the hallway.

DJUNGELSKOG
On your last day of midterms and Nanami decides to buy you the stuffed animal you had your eye on for a while.
___________
A/N: It’s midterm week for me and what's better than not studying for my exams? Writing about Nanami Kento <3
Warnings: mentions of sex
___________
"Oh my god, I seriously think that I am going to cry," you said in your frustrated laced voice. It was the last day of midterms, and you have spent the past several hours studying at your school's library. Every day since the beginning of the week, you set a routine: wake up at 6 am, head to school by 7:45 am, study before you head for one of your exams, go home, take a nap, wake up, have dinner, study, and finally ending the night sleeping. But that wasn't the only thing stressing you out. What you really needed was your boyfriend, Nanami Kento.
Due to your conflicting schedules, you rarely saw each other. Nanami was your biggest supporter in anything you did. You wanted to learn how to knit him a scarf, and he bought you a kit with pretty yarn. Did you want to maintain a small herb garden? Say no more. He surprised you with basil, rosemary, lemon balm, and thyme plant pot. He wanted you to succeed. Knowing that you rarely saw him made your heartache even more. You had an hour left until your final midterm then it was spring break. You thought about all the things you wanted to do with Nanami over your break. Slowly indulging in your daydream, you suddenly received a text from Nanami.
"Good Luck on your last Midterm, Sweetheart <3. I know we haven't seen each other, but I have a special surprise for you when you get home. My break is over. I'll see you soon, my love. I love you to the moon and back."
A surge of motivation hit you like a wave. You were going to ace this last midterm and head home to your boyfriend. Studying for a bit more, finally satisfied with your effort, you faced your last midterm.
Your professor explained the details of the exam and gave the class two hours to complete it. After some time passed, fellow students got up around you and turned their exams in. You moved your pencil swiftly across the exam, making sure you have everything right. You were the last student to leave. After you turned in your exam, you wished your professor a nice spring break, and they wished the same to you.
Feeling like you just conquered the world, you finally headed home, home to him. You entered your shared house only to be dimly lit with candles and the smell of Italian food cooking on the stove. You saw Nanami pick some of the basil you were growing and put into his famous pasta sauce, which he refused to share until the two of you were married.
You kept staring at him until you notice that his tall figure was right in front of you.
You were about to say something, but Nanami silenced you with a kiss before saying, "Welcome home, sweetheart."
His hand was on your cheek, and you raised your hand to caress his hand slowly.
"I'm home, Nanami."
He pulls you into a swift hug and promptly tells you to take a shower.
You follow his command and head towards the bathroom. The hot water washed away your tiredness. You stood still, enjoying the water trail down your body.
Once you were done, you changed into a set of comfy pj's and were greeted to a table filled with Italian dishes that you couldn't name, but you weren't complaining.
The both of you took a bite of the delicious food. You moan audibly because all you had this week was quick, easy meals like instant ramen. This is the first day you had a home-cooked meal, especially if Nanami made it.
Nanami sets his fork down and asks, "How come you don't moan like that when we have sex?"
You choke on your food and reach out for the glass of water next to you. Chugging the water, you see him smirking in the dim kitchen lights. You miss him and his teasing so much it made you beet red.
You answered, "Because you fuck me so hard that no sound comes out of my mouth, dummy."
He is pleasantly surprised at your retort, which leads him to smile and say a quick sorry before giving you a wink.
The both of you conversed, talking about school, work, and deciding which movie you two wanted to see tonight. After eating, Nanami took your plates and put them in the dishwasher. At the same time, you headed to your shared bedroom and turned on the TV using the remote to put on a movie on Netflix.
You made yourself comfortable on your shared bed, and Nanami opens his arms so the two of you could cuddle. Still, before you can fall into his arms and cuddle, he leaps out of bed. "I have a surprise for you. It's a gift for you finishing your midterms and studying so hard," Nanami said with a proud voice.
He leaves the room. You got lost in deep thought, wondering what type of gift he was going to give you.
He pokes his head through the door and tells you to close your eyes. You follow his order. You hear him shifting on the bed and place the gift right on your lap. You kept thinking what it was, but before you could continue your thought, Nanami tells you to open your eyes.
You open your eyes and screeched in happiness. Your brain was fried due to studying, and all you could do was babble.
He laughs at your reaction, happy that you love it so much. You finally come back to earth and reach for the gift he got you. It was the famous Ikea bear, otherwise known as a "Djungelskog".
Before you could bombard him with questions, he tells you what you wanted to hear.
"Remember when we went to Ikea like a month ago to buy new plate wear ." You nod at his response, listening intently. He continues, "When we passed by the stuffed animal section, and I noticed you holding the bear. I asked you if you wanted it. Your mouth said no, but your eyes said yes." After dating him for 3 years, now embarrassed that this man can still see right through you.
"Since you were busy with midterms and I barely saw you, it was perfect timing. I went to Ikea this past Tuesday while you were at school. I bought the bear and took it home and hid it in the spare closet in the hallway."
You immediately hugged him and peppered his face with kisses. Your heart was beating rapidly, and a faint blush appeared on your face. He smiles and gives you the same treatment back. After a few moments of you two kissing softly, he pulls away, opening his arms to cuddle. With a swift motion, you lay on Nanami's chest while hugging your precious djungelskog.
You were finally together again, and this moment the two of you shared right here was, love.
The End.

DIY Secret Storage Box
Project by Kate Pruitt:
Try as I might to achieve minimalism, I just can’t seem to stop the clutter in my life. After a huge clean, the house experiences a few days of perfect organization and cleanliness before the chaos creeps back in, usually through a series of seemingly innocent decisions — a piece of mail I set aside instead of filing away; an irresistible thrift-shop find that gets purchased without a plan for where it should go; a sale on craft supplies. You know how it is. Okay, maybe they’re not so innocent.
While I still plan to eliminate and prevent clutter, I also embrace it to a certain extent as a challenge to finding clever ways of storing things secretly. I consider today’s project a double achievement in this category: I have not only found a place for my extra pieces of art, but I’ve also created a stealth storage unit that can hold the most unsightly items in my house: my random binders, files and paperwork. With the right piece of art and a readymade box, you can make this project in under an hour. So I ask you, if the clutter is hidden behind a pretty piece of artwork and nobody sees it but you, does it exist? Happy crafting ;) — Kate
Materials
framed artwork (ideally one with a thick wood frame, or one with a wooden canvas inside)
wood box (I used Prant boxes from Ikea because they were the perfect depth for my bookshelves, but any box will do.)
ruler
pencil
drill
3/4″ screws
Instructions
1. Start by assembling your boxes, placing them in your bookshelf and planning how you want your picture to sit within your shelves. Depending on the dimensions of your picture, you may want it to sit flush with the bottom of the box/shelf, or you may want it to extend above or below the shelf. Once you’ve decided how you like it, use your pencil to mark the box roughly where your frame will hit it.
2. Measure and mark the box where you will attach it to the frame. You want to inset the holes from the edges by at least 1″ on the top and sides. Make corresponding marks on the frame.
3. Drill small holes where you made the four marks on the box.
4. Flip the picture upside down and place the box on top, realigning the holes with the corresponding marks you made on the frame.
5. Screw the box to the frame.
6. You’re done! I recommend adding felt pads to the bottom of the box, especially if your box does not sit flush with the bottom of the frame. This way, you can also use your box/artwork for tabletop storage!

Locking the front door of the brand-new apartment you had just moved into, you pulled down your light coat’s sleeve after dropping your keys in your little cross-body bag. You walked down the few flights of stairs that separated you from the entrance hall, quickly checking if you had any mail and walked out the door as it was found empty.
Today was your lucky day because the wind stopped blowing right before you woke up, and the sun decided to show up as you were enjoying your breakfast, making you finish it on the little balcony right outside your living room. You couldn’t ask for a better start of the day, the light mood and warm atmosphere bringing nothing but a huge smile on your face.
You greeted the old lady with a wave and a bow as she was swiping the entrance of the bakery, wishing her a great day as you kept your route.
__
Two weeks ago, as you were moving in, the baker happened to be with her son and some of his friends, and instead of helping her serve the bakery customers, she sent them over to your place as she knew who you were, since you visited her place in a rush the day before. She seemed to have the gift of the gab because she was quick to ask if you were new around the neighbourhood. You remember being surprised by her behaviour and politely answered, but you were glad that you had this conversation with her. You weren’t even halfway through your move that the 4 boys appeared in the entrance hall, offering their help. Feeling a bit suspicious at first, you kindly refused, but when one of them offered you a smile extremely similar to the baker and introduced himself as her son, you finally gave in and accepted their help.
The amount of time you had planned for your move got reduced by almost three thanks to them. They followed your orders like no one else, and once they were done moving the boxes around the rooms and left, you quickly went to the local convenience store you had spotted at the other street corner and bought 4 bottles and some chocolate for them. You walked by the bakery the following day, and the son happened to work here, replacing his mother while she was at a doctor’s appointment. He was touched by your small gifts, and he made sure to call his friends to come over and get them while you slipped away from the bakery to go to IKEA. Before you got to leave, he advised you to take a few walks around the neighbourhood to get to know your surroundings. You wished you could have followed his advice earlier, but you were busy with moving in and get ready for your interviews that could lead you to potential jobs.
But today was the weekend and you decided to take some time for yourself and follow the advice of the baker's son. It was a beautiful day, and you had planned to make the most of it to get familiar with your neighbourhood.
__
Your area was surprisingly calm to be in the middle of the city, but you weren’t going to complain since it was something you were dying to have: a friendly, quiet neighbourhood. The nice smell of the bakery lingered around you as you walked past the building, following you until you turned at a corner, leading you to a new, unknown street. Some shop windows were beautifully decorated, and you mentally took some notes of the various local shops that could become potentially useful one day. You walked past a china shop, staying for a few seconds to admire the detailed and precise work displayed in the window display. Offering a smile to the young lady inside the store, you walked away and looked around, noticing something that caught your attention on the opposite pavement. You quickly checked as no car drove by and crossed the street, smiling as two shops were the polar opposite of the other. The flower shop in front of you was sweet, it smelt delicate and chic, just like flowers. The walls were covered by some off-white roughcast, adding a soft touch to it.
A few meters away, on the left of the flower shop, was a tattoo parlour. You giggled as you noticed the cliche that emanated from the two places. The parlour was covered in black, with a Gothic, biker style, posters of metal and rock music pasted around the walls, hardcore music blasting from the speakers, completely contrasting with the softness and the sobriety of the flower shop. A tattoo artist appeared behind the counter that was situated next to the window and your eyes widened, trying to quickly count the number of tattoos and piercings that was decorating his body. A single front piece of hair was dyed blond among the other jet-black strands, his warm smile standing out from the rest of his physical appearance.
You turned your head to the side as you focused on the flower shop, its atmosphere suiting you better despite the next-door shop spiking up your interest. You smiled at the yellow Beetle parked in front of it and pushed the door open after a few seconds of consideration, a small bell tingling as it hit the glass door.
The smell of pollen and freshly cut flowers welcomed you in, the intensity of the colours making you slightly dazed. They were all gorgeous, the arrangements giving you an impulsion to buy a bouquet of each flower they had in store, but that would never happen.
“Welcome!” a voice from under the counter greeted you, a man appearing behind it a few seconds later, secateurs in hand. You smiled as you greeted him back, charmed by how similar he was to his store, soft and friendly. He stayed behind the counter, watching you walk around his shop, all of his other activities and tasks were instantly forgotten as soon as you stepped a foot inside his store.
Changmin was amazed by your smile, finding you incredibly beautiful, his heart hammering in his chest at the sight of your admiring smile creeping across your lips. He was dying to talk to you and get to know you, but he knew himself, he was most likely going to make a fool of himself if he ever dared to exchange some words with you. He was already pleasantly surprised that he had managed to welcome you without getting in a muddle or stumbling on his words.
With a slightly shaking hand, he diagonally cut the end of the red roses resting on the counter. He couldn’t help but glance at you, which you didn't notice, luckily for him. However, by paying too much attention to you and your gorgeous smile, he began to cut the stems a little too rapidly and too high, alas once pinching a piece of skin between the pruning blades, making him jump in pain and let go of the gardening tool. Changmin stifled a groan of pain and rushed into the back office, looking for the first aid kit. He hurriedly found a sticking plaster and wrapped it around his cut, pressing on the wound to ease the pain and get back to work as quickly as possible.
As he reappeared in the doorway that separated the back office from the front office, he heard the bell above the door chime again, signalling your departure.
His shoulders subsided and he watched you walk away with a disappointed pout. He sighed in sadness and pushed the roses away, nervousness and guilt fuelling his mind and regrets.
"Shit," he sighed, picking up the wilted petals of a few roses that were littered on the floor, shoving them into the front pocket of his apron. He blamed himself for not having spoken to you to at least know your name. Quickly, Changmin walked around the counter to door, showing the “now-closed” store sign as remorse flooded his veins. He let his feet guide every single one of his moves, now finding himself in the storeroom. He took a pencil and his notebook sticking out of his bag before returning to the counter.
Closing his eyes, he tried to remember your face and began a sketch. He erased a line, then two, then several, feeling the frustration overcome him as the portrait did not correspond to what he had seen a few minutes earlier at all. Changmin had a perfect image of you in his mind, but maybe the stress of forgetting you or his shaking hands prevented him from replicating your gorgeous face on paper.
Completely unaware of what was going on behind those four walls, you kept on walking around the neighbourhood until your feet hurt and decided to go back to your apartment.
__
The next morning you enjoyed the rays of sunlight that your curtains had failed to filter for a few minutes, smiling shyly as you remembered seeing the florist appearing in your dreams. He was here, you recognised his face, but you couldn't hear what he was saying. He sounded extremely sincere and filled with love, but it was probably just your lonely mind playing tricks on you. You decided to get up, a sudden urge for pastry invading your thoughts, your stomach growling at the sudden idea. After dressing appropriately for going out, you walked through your doorstep and walked leisurely to your favourite bakery. The baker was sitting on a chair on the small terrace of her shop, sipping tea with who appeared to be her husband.
"Morning Sir. Ma'am," you bowed, greeting them warmly, the baker hurriedly setting down her tea mug to gently grab your wrist. "Dear, this is the young lady Jacob and his friends helped move in the brick building, around the street corner that I told you about. Remember that?" she explained to her husband, who took the time to swallow his sip while nodding. "Ah, the bottle of wine and the chocolate," he says looking at you and you smiled, as it was your turn to nod. "That's right," you stated, holding out your hand for him to squeeze, which he did delicately. “Thanks again,” you told them, and the baker waved her hand in front of her face, a genuine smile on her face. "Oh please, don’t worry about it, it's okay," she declared, and you thanked them again before entering their bakery. Jacob was behind the counter chatting with an old lady who seemed to waylay him. He noticed you and apologised to her, seeing him sigh before greeting you. Jacob was a sweet man, always ready to help everyone and too nice to say no. Talking and getting to know him was a piece of cake, he was so nice to hang out with and a gem to have around.
"Y/N, hello! What can I get you?" he offered you a beautiful smile, which he got from his mother, noticing another time the striking similarity with the old woman on the terrace. "I'm going to get a baguette and one of those," you say, pointing at a pain au chocolat sprinkled with powdered sugar in the little window that separated you from the young man. He smiled and grabbed a metal clamp, placing the pastry in a paper bag. Typing a few things on the machine, you handed him a banknote and he gave you back the change, along with your pastries. You thanked him and started to leave when a familiar figure stood at a table against the window.
Changmin was quietly drinking his coffee when he heard a conversation start from outside the window. He almost spat out the liquid he had in his mouth when he saw you talking with the owners of the bakery, his eyes widening at the sight of you. He pursed his lips to stifle a smile and continued to drink his coffee, tapping on his phone screen. His heart was hammering harder, faster, in his chest as he tried to keep a low profile, lowering his head in case you were to curiously look around the place. He sighed through gritted teeth when he heard your complicity with Jacob, feeling a touch of jealousy pinching his heart without intending to. Changmin nervously finished his cup of coffee in one sip, the warm liquid burning his throat, not bothering looking up. Stuffing his phone in his jacket pocket, he was ready to go when he saw you still in the store, immediately freezing as his brown eyes met your sparkling ones.
"Hello!" you told him with a smile, waving discreetly with one hand while the other clutched the brown bag against you. He blinked several times, your beauty and kindness bouncing around his skull. He answered you with a brief, serious nod and walked away without even saying goodbye to his friend behind the counter. You watched him leave out the window before turning to Jacob, who was looking at you with a thin smile on his lips. "Did I say something wrong?" you asked him, and he exhaled a laugh through his nose, shaking his head from side to side. "Not at all. Changmin is just a very shy person sometimes," he said, and you nodded, still a bit confused from the florist's behaviour, but you said nothing and walked out of the store after wishing for a good day to Jacob. The latter smiled as you walked in the opposite direction from Changmin, greeting another customer as he understood his friend’s behaviour.
__
A week passed and it was time for you to start your new job. You had used up a good chunk of your last salary to pay for furniture and taxes which you barely remembered the names of, so you needed to have a new entrance of income. You applied to a real estate agency that wasn't far from where you live, as a financial chief director, exactly what you worked at in your previous city. You had to walk past the florist to get to your new workplace, but the florist was the only closed shop on the whole street, which surprised you. You had the opportunity to talk a little more with Jacob, and he had confessed to you that Changmin loved his job and was a flower enthusiast, which confirmed your concern when you didn't see his store open.
A smile grew on your face at the end of the day, when you took the same path as this morning, seeing the shop illuminated. When you had assembled your furniture, you remembered that you wanted to decorate your apartment with more greenery and flowers. Seizing the opportunity that the florist was still open, you pushed open that same door you had walked through a few weeks ago, the same wonderful smell and tinkling bell welcoming you inside.
You noticed a brown chunk of hair behind a large, flowered wall, immediately recognising Changmin's slender figure. You heard him clear his throat as he hummed a tune, arranging a bouquet.
Changmin heard a customer walk into his store and finished his bouquet of sunflowers and red roses before revealing himself, his eyes opening widely as he discovered your innocent smile and your office outfit. The pencil skirt and beige suit you wore made his heart fuzzy with warmth, his mind only filled with how pretty you looked.
“Good evening,” you greeted him, and he nodded, swallowing his saliva before answering you. "Welcome," he said, his husky, uncertain voice melting your heart. He managed to smile, finding dimples growing in the corners of his mouth, he was handsome when he was smiling with reddened ears. "I would like to know if you have any flowers or plants to recommend to decorate my apartment," you clear your throat before telling him your request. "May I ask the colour of your walls?" he asked in a hesitant voice, looking everywhere around the shop except you. "White, cream, and some in greyish tones as well," you explained and he nodded mechanically, looking through his stock.
"I can suggest you some dried pampas grass with cotton stems. It's... quite sober and low maintenance," he walked around the counter and you followed, his hands grabbing a few stems which he gathered under your nose. You liked the harmony of the two plants, you already had an idea where to put these at your place. "I like them a lot, I'll take a bouquet," you stated, and he nodded, giving you a small smile as he walked over to the cash register. He remained motionless for a few seconds, his finger hovering above a key. You saw him take a deep breath before disappearing into the back office, making you frown for an instant.
Changmin reappeared a few seconds later and you looked at him in shock, expecting everything but this. He held out an arrangement of sunflowers and roses in front of you, the warm tones of yellow and red reminding you of the summer warmth.
"It's for you," he said, holding your gaze, the tips of his ears turning a crimson red. You remained a few seconds dumbfounded in front of the bouquet, not knowing what to do. "For me? But in what honour? I don't deserve it," you stated but he insisted with a nod, so you shyly took the bouquet and gave him a big smile, your heart pounding. "That's so sweet, thank you very much," you told him, plunging your nose into the flowers, the scent of the two flowers blending beautifully together. He seemed to be breathing again when he discovered pure happiness in your eyes, giving you a big smile as well.
“You are as radiant as a sunflower, I… I wanted to gift you some,” he confessed, and you were touched by his words. “And the red roses… well, I don't think I should draw you a picture,” his voice trailed, and you were both embarrassed, but you could still feel some connection emerge between you two. Looking at the flowers again, you noticed a small card hanging at the base of the bouquet, and you flipped it to read it.
"A date to celebrate my arrival here?" you asked, surprised he knew this information about you. "Only if you want to, of course. I accidentally overheard your discussion with Mr and Mrs Bae, I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to show you around the city," he scratched the back of his neck, an embarrassed look painted on his face, apprehensive about your reaction. "With great pleasure," he looked up and sighed in relief, making you smile at his behaviour. "Saturday morning in front of the bakery, is that okay with you?" "It's perfect." He smiled while nodding, his brown eyes lingering into yours for seconds that seemed to last forever, but he didn't feel so intimidated anymore.
He almost felt confident, and that only sounded promising for the days to come.
