An old classmate from highschool has become an actress and she's in a pretty popular tv show here in Greece where she plays a teenager. and it's just so wild to see while knowing what she looked like as an ACTUAL teen. She'll be 25 soon lmao 😭
#or maybe she already is#idk her birthday#this trope of full grown adults playing children will never not be funny#but it's also problematic bc it changes the average person's impression of what a teenager looks like#and opens up the rhetoric of adult/teen relationships#like in pll where the actress who played a 15yo and the guy who played her teacher who she dated in the show were only like 2-3 years apart#irl#and so when you looked at them together it didn't feel as wrong as it was#why am i going on this tangent lmao#o protos apo emas#ο πρωτος από εμας#Έλσα#I'm not tagging my classmates name#it feels too weird#fun fact: 2 other people from my year became actors#which is funny bc we went to a music themed highschool#we were taught everything abt music and these 3 were like “nah I'll do theater instead”#crispy talks#text#ranting in the tags as usual

oscar’s arrival was as unwanted to his parents as could be : a father whose tendencies leaned towards alcoholism & abusing whoever was in arms reach , a mother whose life was more or less spent at the nursing home she worked as a nurse at , evading home . he became a self - inflicted loner , preferring to do literally the exact opposite of what was expected or wanted from him . he had a few friends he ran with , but watching them all go off & study or prepare for university solidified in oscar’s mind that the non - traditional route was for him . growing up by the water , oscar always felt more drawn to skip school & head to the beach than he did obeying his parents wishes .
one of his solaces was his grandfather , gabriel , who owned an italian restaurant in a beach town north of sydney . whenever the weather was bad & oscar felt like ditching class , he’d head over to his nono’s restaurant where his ass would be put to work as soon as he set eyes on the restaurant . it was tough work , but challenging in a way that fanned the flames in oscar’s heart , rather than dimming them . by the time he was a teenager he was working in the restaurant everyday after school , an agreement between him & his grandfather framed on the back wall that stated that as long as oscar kept from flunking out , he was allowed to spend as little or as much time in the kitchen as he pleased .
his absolute defiance of anything traditional & following the rules made him unpopular with adults , but lowkey cool with the girls . by the time he was sixteen , he was losing his focus on the restaurant & his grades & spending more & more time chasing after girls . his nono tried to get oscar to come back & focus , but as always , anything he’s asked to do quickly becomes the thing he’s running from the most .
tw : death , cancer . around his eighteenth birthday , his grandfather suddenly fell ill with a rare form of cancer that took his life six weeks after diagnosis , which rocked oscar’s world . he felt overwhelming guilt that he hadn’t spent more time with his grandfather , which manifested itself as oscar dropping out of school a year shy of graduation to commit himself fully to perfecting his grandfather’s techniques , learning all of his recipes ( read : pouring over dozens of handwritten cookbooks ) in some failed attempt to get back some time with him . oscar hadn’t been close with his parents in years , more or less seeing them as wardens of a prison he wanted nothing to do with . his grandfather’s will left him the deed to the restaurant , with an ask that oscar would promise to act on whatever he felt called towards , rather than doing what others expected of him . to be candid , this whole situation crushed him .
eventually , he decided he’d had enough of the stifling community he’d grown up in . he sold the restaurant to one of the regulars , a wealthy man who he’d come to acknowledge as somewhat of an uncle ; a safe pair of hands who would treat his grandfather’s legacy with as much passion & respect as oscar himself would . so he packed a bag , texted his mom that he was going traveling , & got on a flight that evening . he traveled all around - first through central america , then through europe , throughout asia & africa , & spent a few months driving a van across the continental united states & canada for fun .
eventually , he started getting low - ish on money , & decided to settle in one of his favourite places he’d visited : southern france . he arrived in early 2018 , taking on whatever menial tasks he could while learning french until he got a position as a line cook in an italian restaurant . a few years later , he’s made his way up to filling the head chef position , an honour he takes with pride . he’s implemented many of his own recipes while using flavours he’s learned from his travels , with ingredients straight from local farmers . he’s earned the restaurant a two michelin star rating , & is constantly striving for more to get that last star ( both for his own ego as well as a secret debt to his grandfather ) .
𝐢𝐯 .
ok but that vid where gordon puts two pieces of bread on someone’s head & calls them an idiot sandwich ? that’s oscar . intense as fuck in the kitchen , & best nobody catch an attitude about it bc he will not hesitate to hand them their ass on a silver platter .
another gordon reference : you know how he’s the spawn of satan with adults , but the sweetest , most helpul guy with children ? that’s oscar with his staff vs people he wants something from . whether its to sleep with them ( usually his first instinct to be fair ) , their money or clout , or to get into some wild adventure some random resort staff wouldn’t dream of getting into , he can turn on the charm whenever needed .
can go from absolutely demoralizing someone in the kitchen to stepping out into the lounge to schmooze with his friends or cougars who leave phat tips in 0.2 seconds . the speed at which his mood can completely 180 is one of the seven world wonders ( last i checked ) .
his love language is absolutely acts of service . catch him actually falling in love once in a blue moon & making it his mission to cook her extravagant meals everyday .
the wolf in sheep’s clothing label epitomizes his nice , helpful , charismatic exterior , while ulterior motives & disdain for those who grew up with more money than he did lurk beneath the surface .
he can be MEAN when someone fucks him over or pushes him farther than he wants - isn’t afraid to go for the low blows or send someone home with an identity crisis if it protects himself .
lowkey alcoholic but he’s not ready for that conversation yet . he sees it more as perks of the location & atmosphere he’s found himself in .
also lowkey falls in love HARD , like this man is a closeted romantic but self - sabotages all potential relationships before they can get to that point out of fear he’ll be unable to live life of his own volition ( takes a flaky philophobic sagittarius to know a flaky philophobic sagittarius 🤡 ) . has probably only had a few real relationships besides flings bc he’s afraid .
𝐯 .
check out my wanted plots tag listed here , as well as my pinterest wanted plots board here . here are some other suggestions hehe :
best friend / ride or die : someone who knows about his past , keeps him grounded when he’s lk spiraling & wants to drop everything & flee to some far flung corner of the earth .
actual relationship : it was fast - burn with deep feelings ( not them thinking they’re soulmates after dating for a month . . . pete & ariana type beat ) but completely unrealistic . they have their own life , he’s pretty much tied to the restaurant , not to mention his lack of sharing anything about his childhood / life back home . they loved & cared for each other , but crashed & burned fairly quickly because of how idealistic it was . they can either be on bad or good terms now .
hateship with sexual tension 😈
summer flings !!
fake boyfriend : he shows up on her arm to her family’s events where she’s expected to have a partner . it’s not a real relationship , but her parents don’t need to know that . he plays the part & satisfies her parents beyond the bare minimum , & in return she invites him to parties , takes him out on her family’s yacht , etc etc . we luv some symbiosis
i can always use more fwbs hehehe
squad : a group of people who do everything together , have a chaotic group chat , have nicknames for one another , are utd on each other’s sex lives , party all night then show up to brunch hungover together .
cat & mouse : someone he’s pursuing who isn’t quite giving in , & vice versa . maybe it’s been going on a few years , everytime they’re in st tropez they have this weird lil flirtationship thing goin on until she leaves , they forget about one another , then pick it right back up when she returns .
confidant : preferably someone from a working class background who understands his plight of being a worker amongst people who expect to be waited on .
enemies : they don’t like his attitude , & he doesn’t like them in return . lots of eye rolls , shit talking , & tension between their mutual friends .
we’re sleeping together but we shouldn’t be but that’s half the fun : for whatever reason they became friends , starting hooking up despite it not being a good idea ( read : he’s exes with one of her friends , her parents want her focused on career , they’re part of the same friend group , etc ) . . . but now they can’t stop . lots of stolen glances across rooms , squeezing past one another in a crowded club just close enough for a quick touch to the back , quietly leaving one another’s places the morning after & playing dumb to anyone who asks .

This is a write up of the Potter family how we see them and how they will be referenced throughout the roleplay. Much of this has been changed from the small moments we see in the epilogue of the final Harry Potter book, but we wanted to break some of the tropes that the Potter children sometimes bring. This write up had prior approval by the admin.
EDWARD “TEDDY” LUPIN.
(These are purely headcanons that can be subject to change completely if a player were to apply for Teddy and have varying ideas; in that case, this post would be edited to reflect the portrayal of the player, including if that player chooses NOT to have Teddy living with Harry and Ginny throughout childhood. We also did not give him a FC for this same reason)
Teddy began his life after the war with his grandmother, Andromeda Tonks, until around age 3, when he went to live with Harry and Ginny. He remained living with them, being treated as a son, until he moved out into his own place after graduation from Hogwarts.
There have been rough patches throughout the years, with Teddy sometimes feeling like an outsider (particularly during the “angsty” teen years), but the Potter family always tried to make him feel as included as possible.
Teddy is a metamorphmagus who particularly enjoys changing his hair color. When he was younger, it often reflected the people around him (turning red frequently around the Weasleys).
He is more like his father, Remus Lupin, with his mother’s warmth. He was a shy child and stayed close to the people he knew, but was talkative and energetic around those people he trusted. He is particularly close to Harry, who is his godfather and confidant. Lately, as Teddy is now an adult, he has a more friend-like relationship with Harry.
Ironically, Teddy is the only child who truly enjoys Quidditch. Perhaps it is because the Potter children are annoyed with having a famous Quidditch-playing mother, but Teddy loves the sport and has bonded with Ginny over their mutual love.
JAMES SIRIUS POTTER.
Born to Ginny and Harry after they were married, though he’s the first child with the last name Potter, he’s more like their second-born after Teddy. James, ironically, is the only one who has a twinge of auburn in his hair, a subtle reminder of his Weasley roots. He also inherited his dark eyes from his mother. (x)
James is arguably the child that takes after Harry the most. Introverted, and prone to having a small group of friends, never too keen to get the spotlight, but able to snark like the best of them and can be really quick-witted and funny.
Out of his parents, James is closest to his mother, who understands a bit more of his walled-up nature, able to get him to talk when he usually wouldn’t - much like his father. He often struggles to go to his dad when it comes to problems he has with Harry and it takes a lot of coaxing from Ginny to get James to a place where he will.
When it comes to being social, when he reaches school James has only a couple tight-knit friends whom he can be himself around.
Though both Harry and Ginny love James’ namesake, he can be lovingly referred to as Jamie by his mother and sometimes his siblings.
Unlike his parents, James is quite creative, loving to draw and read. When he arrived at Hogwarts, much to his parent’s surprise he was sorted into Ravenclaw - a lovely connection to his Aunt Luna.
ALBUS “AL” SEVERUS POTTER.
Albus was born just two short years after James. Had Harry and Ginny known what they were getting into, perhaps they would’ve tried to prepare themselves more. While Albus was a fairly content baby, he grew into a rather spirited child as he aged. He looks like Harry with his dark hair and green eyes, though the freckles are all his mother. (x)
It was very likely Albus has an undiagnosed case of ADHD (since the Wizarding World would not have a name for this), as he struggles with hyperactivity and focus. He is the child that is often all over the place and Harry and Ginny learned to keep one eye on him always to make sure he didn’t accidentally maim himself.
He is very rarely referred to by his full name - mostly being called “Al” by everyone in the family.
Albus is very charming and makes friends easily because of his good-naturedness. He’s kind and loving, but can go very attached quickly. When he loves, he loves - and, once you’re his friend, he’d do anything for you. He often has very big ideas that don’t have the practical logistics to go with them, so he’s often left upset and floundering when things don’t work out.
Albus can be emotional - he feels heavily. His happiness is very big, but so is his sadness and anger and everything else.
Surprisingly, Albus is a Slytherin. He is very ambitious in getting what he wants. Many of the other Slytherins were not prepared for a lively, hyper classmate, but they’ve mostly grown to accept him because he’s fairly likable. Sometimes, they do have to tell him to shut up, however.
LILY LUNA POTTER.
The youngest of the Potter children, Lily was born two years after Albus. With dark hair that is sometimes a bit messy and green eyes, she inherited much from her father, just like Albus, in terms of appearance. (x)
While Ginny was the youngest Weasley girl who slightly disappointed her mother by being so boyish, Lily is exactly what her grandmother was looking for. A girl who loves ribbons and bows, has an affection for pretty things and has dressed herself since she was a toddler. Even when tiny, she’d trod down the stairs to give the family a fashion show - though she didn’t always have the eye she began to get as a teenager. Now she’s easily one of the most stylish girls in her year and often scolds her mother for wearing something that is so frumpy.
Lily is closest with her father, a daddy’s girl if there ever was one - and frankly Harry was willing to keep trying until they had a daughter. Much like Ginny flocked to Arthur, Lily loves to be around her father as much as possible - though she loves to also remind him how much of a dork he is.
Lily is easily the most judgemental of the children, most likely because she’s learned from her older brother’s mistakes - and at the precious prepubescent age loves to act as though she can do nothing wrong just yet. That being said, her high standards are something to admire and when she dreams of finding future love she wants someone who loves her as much as her dad loves her mum - but way less nerdy!
Lily is the only child of Harry and Ginny’s to be sorted into Gryffindor.

REQUEST: so i know you're not taking requests, but i would die die die and love love love a fic with harry as a med student who realizes he's in love with his best friends little sister (and they've all grown up their whole lives together really close) super specific i know, but we all have those tropes that we love haha
A/N: Kind of changed this around, I hope that’s okay! I might do another part to this eventually if there’s interest. All the love. xx
TW: cancer death.
You and Harry were never really all that close growing up.
You only knew him as your brother’s best friend. Granted, you thought that he was great— he had come over to enough family dinners and holidays for you to know that he was incredibly funny, and extremely talented. He was there at the dinner table when you announced that you were going to med school. He was there when you came back for Christmas and Thanksgiving, and even occasionally when you skyped your brother from college. He was more family member than anything, even though you two had never really had that deep of a connection.
You never expected him to be the one that was there for you on that day.
It was on the fourth day of your internship in the surgical wing. You’d been up for about forty-six hours, with a few cat naps here and there and more cups of coffee than you could remember. And you lived for it— you lived for the rush of running down hospital wings, you lived for the look on a loved one’s face when they were told that the patient would make a full recovery. You loved the puzzle, the riddle, everything about the game.
Until you didn’t.
He was nine years old. The little boy with brain cancer was nine years old.
You first checked up on him during your morning rounds. His BP was low, and his test results left much to be desired. He was asleep when you walked into the room— the heart monitor beeped constantly as you checked his vitals, mulling about the space as quietly as you could. Nico, the clipboard stated as his name, and you went about your business and slipped out of the room to let him sleep. You remember thinking it was odd that he didn’t have any parent there.
The second time you checked up on him was three hours later. You caught a glance at him when you walked by his doorway— he was sitting up in bed, the bags in his eyes as dark as you could imagine. Nevertheless he was playing with a toy truck, his food sitting on the tray next to his bed.
You knocked on the door lightly, a smile coloring your lips.
“Hey, buddy,” you said, watching as he looked up in your direction.
“Hi,” he croaked, his voice weaker than you expected. It took you back for a second, and you took a few steps into the room before speaking again.
“What’s your name?” You asked, despite knowing it already.
“Nico,” he replied, his blue eyes big and captivating. His skin was pale and gleaming with sweat, but his eyes were filled with more life than ever.
“Nice to meet you, my name’s Y/N. Is it okay if I check your vitals?” You asked. He nodded softly, turning his attention back to his truck, and you milled about the room doing your work gently. He barely flinched when you put the stethoscope to his back, and you realized that he must have been here for a while.
“Where are your parents, Nico?” You asked, adjusting the stethoscope around your neck as you glanced up at the monitors, looking for any irregular numbers.
“Mom’s at work,” he admitted, and the way he said it made you realize that dad wasn’t in the picture. “She comes whenever she can, but she doesn’t have a lot of time to catch the train between her jobs.”
You swallowed thickly, immediately regretting asking the question. You forced a smile on your face as you looked at his thin features, making a mental note to come check back in on him later.
“I’ll bring you a pudding cup next time, okay? What’s your favorite flavor?”
“Chocolate,” he said with a thin grin, his top tooth missing.
“Chocolate it is,” you confirmed, shooting him a wink before turning around and leaving to continue your rounds.
The next time you walked past his door, there was a chocolate pudding cup in your pocket.
And there were five doctors in the room.
“There must be something we can do…”
“This poor kid’s mother is working three jobs, for Christ sakes.”
“Has someone called her?”
“I couldn’t get through to her.”
“Well try again, for fuck sakes.”
“Dr. Bell?” Your voice interrupted the slurry of physician’s words, causing everyone to glance over at you. You made eye contact with your assigned resident, swallowing thickly before speaking again. “What’s going on?”
The young woman’s lower lip trembled a little bit, and you could tell that she was fighting to hold it together. There was a look in her eyes that you hadn’t seen yet, as if this was something that she hadn’t meant for you to face so soon.
“Y/N, I…” she began, closing her eyes briefly as she tried to find the words. “The patient...Nico, well, we’re afraid his time is up. There’s...there’s nothing else we can do for him.”
The words sunk in slowly, one by one, like slowly peeling off a band-aid.
“We’re trying to contact his mother, but we know that she works long hours and has four other children but...we thought she’d want to be here to hold him,” she finished, tears in her eyes for the first time since you’d met her. You came to the conclusion that this job must never get easier.
“I’ll sit with him,” you said immediately, your voice unwavering.
“Are you...Y/N, you don’t have to— ”
“I want to,” you asserted, walking further into the room. You took a seat next to the bed as your eyes fell upon the little boys features— cold and hard, yet soft all at once. “If that’s what he needs right now, if that’s what you’re all looking for, I’ll do it.”
There was a long pause in the room as you reached to take Nico’s hand in yours, surprised at the cold sensation of it. That feeling would haunt you for the rest of your life.
“I’ll...get someone to cover the rest of your rounds,” Dr. Bell said, glancing around at the other physicians before gesturing for them to leave you and your patient alone.
You sat, and you sat, and you waited. You held his little hand in yours and rubbed it between your palms, bringing it up to your lips and blowing hot air on them in an attempt to warm him. It didn’t work, no matter how many times you did it. You ran your fingers through his hair and almost shivered at the way his unmoving body felt beneath your fingertips, the feeling like an unwanted houseguest creeping under your skin.
By the time the monitor made that slow, single, monotone beep, you felt numb.
*
Harry was just going to drop his spare house key off at his mate’s house and leave. He was going away on a trip and wanted someone to water his plants, as weird and adult as that sounded to him. So he lifted the mat and revealed the hidden key that his best friend thought would never be found by an unwelcome guest (even though it was more cliche than he could ever imagine), and he let himself in.
He whistled softly as he walked into the hallway and set his key on the counter at the end of the hall. He was about to turn around and walk back out when he heard it— the sound of someone retching, as if they were about to throw up.
“Hello?” Harry called out, furrowing his brows as he walked down towards the bathroom door. He was half expecting to see his mate, but his eyes widened when he saw that it was you.
“Y/N?” He murmured softly, lips turning downward with concern. You were still in your scrubs from your shift earlier that day, your hair pulled up in a tangled messy bun that had long since partly fallen out. Your face was pale and your entire body was shaking, your white sneakers resting against the bright pink tile of the bathroom as you held your head in your hands.
“Hey, hey, hey,” Harry cooed, immediately kneeling down on the ground in front of you. He could see it register on your features when you realized it was him— your face softened slightly and your eyes began to water all over again. You couldn’t fake it around Harry. There was something about him that made the truth spill out.
“I can’t— I can’t do it, I can’t Harry, I can’t do it anymore, I’m not made for this,” you rambled quickly, your head shaking as you covered your eyes with the palms of your hands and choked on a sob. You couldn’t get the feeling of that little boy’s cold hand out of your head, seeping in like rainwater through a wall.
“What can’t you do, love? What’s going on?” Harry asked, reaching to brush a lock of your hair behind your ear. He felt the desire in his chest to hold you so desperately, and he didn’t know where it was coming from.
You told him everything. Between the sobs and the hiccups and the tears, you told him about the little boy in the hospital that day, the one that died alone without his mother or any of his family. The one who’s pudding cup was still in your locker at work because you couldn’t bear to throw it out, because every time you tried to the feeling of his hand in yours would tie it to you like an anchor to the bottom of the ocean.
“I just felt so helpless, Harry, it was...it was the worst feeling I’ve ever felt in my entire life,” you concluded, your face bright red and your eyes stinging as you looked at him. “I never want to feel that way ever again.”
Harry’s own eyes threatened to fill with tears at the sight of you like this— the only other time he’d ever seen you this upset was when you broke up with your long term boyfriend on Christmas two years ago. And even then, it wasn’t like this. Back then you didn’t look so...broken.
Oh, how he wished he could put you back together.
“C’mere,” he murmured softly, opening his arms as he leaned back onto the tile to sit on his behind. You sniffled as you crawled towards him, and you found that you fit against his chest easily. His arms wound around your frame strongly, pulling you against this chest and tucking your head under his chin. He smelled faintly of soap, aftershave, and Tom Ford cologne, and the scent made your head spin and your muscles relax. You felt his chest vibrate slightly as he hummed, closing your eyes and letting yourself be taken care of.
“You have to do this,” he whispered, and you suddenly realized that his lips were against the top of your head. “You have to do this, Y/N, because I know you. I know that you were meant to do this...we need doctors like you. Doctors who don’t just see it as a way to earn a paycheque— ones who will stop to ask a sick boy what his favorite pudding is. One who will spend their time holding someone’s hand during that last moment, because it’s just as important as the ones you spend saving someone. You...you saved that little boy, Y/N. In some way, somehow, you saved him. You did.”
The way you saved me, he wanted to say, but he simply closed his eyes and pressed a kiss to the top of your head. He had been there alongside you as you grew, and he had always known there was something special about you— you had this light in your eyes and in the way you treated people that made him feel like the world wasn’t hopeless.
Like he wasn’t hopeless.
And maybe he should have realized that sooner, and maybe it shouldn’t have taken him finding you on a bedroom floor for him to realize that he loved you. But lord, did he ever love you. It hit him like a strike of thunder, and left him shaken to the core.
And all the meanwhile, you found yourself surprised at how easy it was to fit into his arms. You wondered if he always knew exactly what to say, and you realized that Harry was a bigger part of your life than you’d ever imagined.
He was the one who quizzed you for seven hours straight when you were studying for your MCATs. He was the first one you called when you passed them. Harry picked you up from your prom when your date showed up drunk and your brother was too busy to, and he took you out for ice cream afterwards and made you laugh about it. He was there with your family at your high school graduation even though he had graduated two years earlier, and when you got sick and your parents were out of town he cooked dinner for you for three days.
And suddenly you realized that Harry had been there for you in more ways than once.
And you were in love with him.
You tucked yourself further into his embrace at the realization, your eyes shut and still stinging from all the crying as your shoulders stopped trembling. He ran his hands up and down your back as you sighed, and with the feeling of his lips resting against the top of your head, you felt yourself drifting off to sleep for the first time in three days.
There was still a dull ache in your chest, but you felt safe again.
You were there, and Harry was there, and tomorrow would be a new day.
But you’d remember this one always.

Digimon Adventure Tri Stage Play Reaction
Guys, this is not an analysis: this is my feels and obnoxious comments while viewing the stage play. My initial goal was to use these notes to make an analysis, but they’re too funny/stupid/wow to hide from the world. I typed these notes in real time, stopping the play whenever I had a thought. It’s the closest I can get to having you watch me watch the stage play without using videos. I will write an actual meaningful post soon, but for now, have a confused and jumpy/unpolished blob of feels.
The other thing I want to say is that I didn’t edit this after I wrote it, except for surface editing (grammar, spelling) and clarifications (mostly adding more names). So if I formed an impression at some point, that’s what I really thought in that moment; I didn’t go back and change it.
That said: this will completely and totally spoil the stage play. SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS! Read on below the cut (if you dare; it’s almost 4K words long and full of images).
Hidden’s Digimon Adventure Tri Stage Play Reaction
I am immediately not buying that Mimi wouldn't want to camp in the bungalow. Isn't this the kid that went to Tokyo Tower instead of patrolling Tokyo because the tower has AC? I guarantee she'd whine an hour in about wanting the bungalow, but wouldn't allow Koushiro to point out that she made this choice for all of them x__x
Did Mimi just... just throw the laptop? How bratty can you get? I... wow, I really hope they don’t treat my Mimi so poorly the whole play.
From Sora's speech, I can see that nostalgia will be a major theme here, which, to be fair, is appropriate, lol! Nostalgia is pretty much why we’re here.
TAICHI! It’s so good to see you get your big bro on again, lol??? Hikari: "I'm not a kid who needs to wait for you to walk home with me."
Taichi: "What? Why not? WHAT'S WRONG?! CONFIDE IN ME!" He’s so aggressive and clumsy about it, lol??
Taichi: "WHO ARE YOU CALLING A STUBBORN BLOCKHEAD."
Jyou, amiably: "You, of course! Wait-" I'm like 15 minutes in and I have already decided that Jyou is my favorite (not surprising lol).
Jyou: "YOU ARE IN DANGER, TAICHI. I HAVE NEVER SEEN YOU STUDY." Oh lord, Jyou is bashing Taichi with the stone of foreboding. Is Jyou okay? Is he quite sane? He isn't, is he. Do you see that gleam in his eye? No, no. He is gone and gone indeed. Jyou’s actor is A+++
Annnnnnd oh hey, it's Yamyams doin' jamjams! I can dig that bass, is he actually playing? Oh hey, he's gonna sing for real, he's- Oh my god, stop! ABORT! He's terrible, hahahaha?!?!?! IT BURRRRNSSS!!!
OH MY GOD HIS BAND HATES THE BAND NAME AND THEY'RE SPEAKING TO HIM IN FRENCH WHAT IS THIS
Wait wow what is this weird ass vibe between the bros? Teeks is accusing Yams of not visiting... Did Yamato have that habit to start with? Hmm...
So Takeru says, "I don't want to see us go our different ways." I've mentioned it over and over, but this feeling is so important to me. It's something I want to write an entire fic around. On the one hand, it's such an easy topic, given the subject material. On the other, it's where my brain keeps going. So... Let's see what happens!
Also: Takeru: "Stay hidden, Patamon!" *puts Patamon on his head and skips offstage* Takeru, sigh...
OH SHIT IT'S ETEMON, saying Taichiiiiihehehehe like a creep ass creeper. He done got beef, too.
Annnnd we cut to everyone reacting because Mimi has no supplies (did you all not bring any?). What I like here, though, is that Jyou can at least talk to her without getting shut down. Poor Kou-chan -__-
Koushiro: "We're amateurs, is there anything we should watch out for?" OH I DUNNO, MAYBE ETEMON IN A HAT AND A VEST god damn I know this is supposed to be funny, but they all look like idiots-
Koushiro: "That old man had a feminine way of speaking" Says the dude being portrayed by a male actor FOR THE FIRST TIME-
Koushiro: "Taichi-san, you're the closest thing to a caveman we have-" Ah, bless.
(At this point, my husband is pointing out while playing Destiny that the puppeteers do really good digimon voices, and I'm explaining that the digimon voices are pre-recorded, lol).
ANNNNND Mimi is whining for supplies that she forbade people to bring. I am shocked.
Jyou is talking about how he wants to help digimon by being a doctor, by saving and protecting, and my heart is growing three sizes. Best Chosen, y'all.
But oof, the atmosphere got so heavy... Why do these kids refuse to talk about what they want to do??? Jyou remains refreshing. Also, I'm just noticing how Koushiro turns his entire body around every single time towards whoever is talking? He leans in, too. It's both cute and unexpected (I would expect much more reserved body language, but I get that this is a play and that's what you do).
HAH! Only Jyou can see the shooting star because he's the only one with his shit together! I love that, lol! (Also, is that really Tailmon's voice actress? Hmm...)
NO, ETEMON HAS KOU-CHAN, BAD TOUCH, BAD TOUCH although really it's painful that we're still pretending they can't recognize Etemon.
Koushiro can't read the room... Well, at least that's familiar, lol!
(At this point, my husband is asking what I think, and I'm stuttering over how annoyed I am at the ‘not-recognizing-Etemon’ gag. My husband is laughing at me and saying I'm at a loss for words. Thanks, love.)
HOLY SHIT did Hikari and Mimi just use the tired "scary stories" trope to bring up the Dark Ocean? I'll give 'em points for that. I AM INTRIGUED, let's go!!! Oh. Oh, they broke it off. They're not doing anything with it. That's... sigh. Thanks, guys. (Caterpillar Sleeping Bag Mimi is cute AF tho).
Hmm, right now I'm thinking that Mimi's actress is so lovely and so lively and really feels like Mimi, but... I also can't stand how they wrote her so far. Throwing Koushiro's computer, talking over him, not allowing him to point out when she's contradicting herself, immediately requesting the supplies she forbade people to bring... This stuff annoyed me in Adventure, but she was 10 and in a situation I would have strongly struggled to handle. But now she's literally... Making problems for everyone... For nostalgia's sake... At age 16? I'm so torn, lol, because the acting is so good but ahhhhh... Let's see how this develops...
Hmm hmm, I'm listening to Sora talk about how she doesn't wanna grow up, either... Darling, you're already quite grown up, lol! Lovely lady. I love how the digimon puppeteers echo their puppets, I can't get enough of watching Agumon's puppet and performer while Sora speaks. They really did a great job!
I think I'm about an hour into this, maybe a little less? 45 minutes? So far all that's really happened is that we've established that the characters want to be together as Chosen Children, and that with the exception of Jyou, they aren't emotionally or mentally prepared to seriously think of a future beyond that. I'll be the first to say that this a compelling and interesting topic, and it's something I've wondered about for them, but... Shouldn't... more things... have happened by now? Hmm... I understood that this would be an issue from Sora's very first bit of dialogue. No one in the audience needs this much expansion and repetition, particularly with so few new ideas and so little momentum so far. Tri is intended as a love letter for fans of Adventure, yes? Mostly adult fans? We don’t need this much repetition to understand, we truly don’t...
Ah! Now Yamato is talking about Jyou and how to become an adult, finally dropping some new ideas in. Love ya, Yams. And ahh, man, Taichi is just... screaming all of his lines? The actor is so sweet and cute, but the delivery... I'm pretty sure it's supposed to reflect that Taichi is putting up fronts like nobody's bidness, though. Yamato ain't buyin' it (Yamato is Almost Best). I really want him to grunt, "Tell the truth or shut up." XD XD GRUNT GRUNT.
Augh, god, I can't take this tho? Literally EVERY TIME someone tries to say something that will move the plot forward or inject some vulnerability into this play (except for Papa Jyou), they change the subject. I'm about halfway through now and this has to be at least the 10th time we've been blocked from useful information and deeper thoughts with this method. Tri suffers from this same issue, though... Their plot is such that they can’t sustain tension if issues are faced in a natural way, so they CHANGE THE SUBJECT or DROP A LEAD or IGNORE A LEAD, etc, etc. Here it's mostly saying, "Well what about you?" or screaming someone else's name, which... Subtle??? Ah, Taichi's latest method of not saying anything is to ask Yamato to play his harmonica... Oh my god, he's playing Walk on the Edge! Okay, okay, you got me, stage play. Hahaha, I remember Yams being better at playing a harmonica, tho!!!! (I keep picking on this poor dude who is asked to do all of the awesome shit Yams can do, sorry my dude).
Taichi: Should we sleep?
Yamato: Let's talk some more.
Taichi: (shit! fuck! He remembered I'm dodging-) YES BECAUSE HE ISN'T AN IDIOT EXCEPT WHEN ETEMON IS ONSTAGE OMG SOMEONE HELP ME-
Ahhh, and they fade out... With no forward movement. THANKS. I mean we established mood, touched on Taichi/Yamato’s relationship, and set up the problems that will be address later (I assume), but... It’s so drawn out...
And now Koushiro is drawing on the ground with a stick, bless you, are you trying to compute something? Sigh... Ah, bless, Tentomon is intervening, haha!
But... As right as Ten-chan is, he's also... Wrong? XD DON'T TELL YOUR FORWARD MOVEMENT MACHINE TO POWER DOWN!!! Annnnd yes! We're an hour in and SOMETHING IS HAPPENING! I am so ready for something to happen. (Tony: "Can we handle the stimulation, though?")
Oh god, the kids freaking out over their partners acting weird, Gabumon's stage hand collapsing... God, right in the feels, I'm almost mad about how easy it is to get an emotional response this way, lol! We just love our babies too much, lol!
Wow, Yamato lost it at Kou-chan... You know, we think of Taichi as carrying a lot of pressure (and rightfully so), but Koushiro carries just as much, as we saw in Kokuhaku. He's not magic, Yams, he needs his tools, and he doesn't have 'em. Related: Although I don't much care for how it happened, I definitely would love to read/write/see a story where Koushiro has no computer and has to adapt, though. I'd also love to see one where a new tech wizard appears and he questions his role, but that's a whole' nother thing.
EWW OH MY GOD DON'T UNDRESS ETEMON MIMI WHAT THE HELL, bleeeeehhhhhhh... Oh god, he thought his outfit was obvious... Well, you see Etemon, somewhere in the last 6 years, the kids completely lost their ability to read situations x__x (I get that this is a joke, I really do? But???)
Oh huh, so they're claiming Etemon wandered the Dark Ocean for 100 years? Didn't he... Come back in Adventure as MetalEtemon? Is he referencing his second defeat? ?????
OH GOD POWER RANGER ETEMON WHAT IS HAPPENING. Haha it's kind of cute that he's like, "Eh I don't know these two (Hikari and Tailmon). I don't think Metaletemon saw them? But honestly I don't remember. I think he was around Jyou and Mimi mostly?
Wait shit are we seriously doing the actual conflict part WITHOUT JYOU AND GOMAMON? I am so mad right now. I kind of feel like they'll burst in at some point??? I hope...
...Etemon has a song and dance number. I am rolling on the floor in pain with the Chosen. I'm doing it, guruguru mawaru- No, NO, YOU PUT TAICHI DOWN- Goddamit how many bad touch jokes do I have to make-
OH THANK GOD, is Jyou coming back? THANK YOU DIGI JESUS! (Tony: "Wait is your favorite back? Did he leave? It sounded like he wandered off and now he's wandering back in again."
Gomamon: "YOU'RE BEING GROSS JYOU" honey, oh child, you ain't seen nothing yet. Oh bless him, he's so happy, can we just watch Jyou bounce around in joy please and no more singing power ranger monkeys? I take back my complaints about nothing happening, haaaaaaaaaaaalp me Senpaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiii
Oh lord Etemon's back WHELP. Oh shit, oh shit that Obon joke, THAT'S THE BEST JOKE IN THIS PLAY, isn’t it? We can't beat that. Should I... leave?
Taichi, in Etemon's gross ass digital Wonder Land: "What's wrong, Hikari?" WHAT'S WRONG?! WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE-
(My husband has informed me that I'm growling. He tells me that, when we were watching Gravity Falls and Mabel tries to tempt Dipper and the others to stay in the perfect imaginary world Bill made for her, I said, "What is she, Satan? Tempting them to stay here in comfort instead of facing danger to save everyone?" This is a similar scenario, and it's one of the few things I didn't like about Gravity Falls and OH NO, TAICHI IS THE MABEL OF THIS SITUATION, HELP!!!! Oh thank goodness, Taichi's done with this too, whew, okay, okay, breathe, stop growling).
Oh God, the Agumon puppet looks dead without the puppeteer, that's actually really awful? These puppets are amazing, guys. I cannot say enough good stuff about the execution with these puppets.
Hmm, Taichi just begged for mercy, and Etemon is unimpressed... Reminds me of the fandom after Saikai. I wonder where they'll take this...
HOLY SHIT Taichi is losing his shit! I won't say that all of that stammering and dodging earlier is accounted for here, since most of the characters did it to some degree, but it's nice to see the payoff within the same piece (instead of waiting months for the next Tri film and forming your own conclusions in that time period). I'm actually happy to see a screaming breakdown like this...
Man Koushiro speaks SO QUICKLY, dude, slow it down!!! Ahhh, he says that we're granted whatever we want here, so Etemon is probably trying to trick us by having us hear Jyou. SOMEONE IS THINKING USING THEIR BRAINSSS I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!!
JYOU IS HEREEEE TO SAVE THE DAAAAAAYYY THE NEW DIGI JESUS, JYOUUUUUU!!! (And while I 100% agree that you should be cautious, Kou-chan, c'mon, he arrived saying that you made his phone go off on the train and it made him feel awkward, that's pretty much proof that it's Jyou, lol!). OH AND NOW KOU AND YAMS ARE ROASTING JYOU, classic.
Koushiro finally takes a stab directly at the heart of this... It's not even about being children and avoiding adulthood; it's about not wanting to leave August 1st. I realize exposition is Kou's job, but I didn't expect him to be the one to lay it out after all of this dodging. I’ll be honest, I’m so pleased with Koushiro in this stage play so far? I love how he moves, I love how quickly he speaks, I love that he’s able to come out and say this. I wasn’t into the way the play used him spouting off numbers to indicate intelligence, but that’s a nitpick compared to the ground they gave Koushiro here.
JYOU. JYOU. EVEN IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, KOUSHIRO, I BELIEVE IN YOU. He continues to be THE BEST, I am in awe, I bow before Jyou.
OH MAN is Jyou gonna work his awkward magic on Yams? Where's my freakin' popcorn. Oh, well, hell. Yama said he... doesn't wanna talk. *rubs forehead* Great. Entertaining. THIS IS FUN I AM HAVING FUN *curls up and cries*
Okay so now Taichi is freaking out and Koushiro is trying to talk to him (roughly 70% of this stage play is someone trying and failing to talk to someone else). But I really like what Taichi says here- "I have nothing to hesitate about." We all know this isn't true; Taichi is hesitating all over the place right now. Let's see where this goes! (Please let it go somewhere this time, lord above). WAIT- WAIT- ARE YOU SHOWING ME KOUSHIRO POINTING FINGERS AT TAICHI'S BULLSHIT AND SAYING "I'VE BEEN BY YOUR SIDE FOR SIX YEARS!!" AND THEN CUTTING AWAY?!?!??!?!?!?!? RAAAAAAAHHHH is this an aneurysm? I think this is what an aneurysm feels like. You can't drop lines that good and then CUT AWAY FROM IT GOOD LORD IN HEAVEN-
Sigh, tsk, groan. Hikari, Teeks. Whacho got for me? Whoa, I swear Takeru has been a second away from sobbing ever since Etemon revealed himself. You... you okay, buddy? Can I, uh, get you anything? I love how much Hikari has her shit together in contrast. Oh, and Takeru is about to say something usefu- ohhh, another cut. God, I have a headache.
Hmm, Sora and Meems are cracking, too... Sora says, "It was simpler when I was everyone's mom. It's not like me to decide on someone or something." I really need to hear Mulan's Reflections in the background right now...
Mimi saying "I want to do SO many things!" is refreshing my soul. I know she's one of the most shippable Chosen, but honestly, if not for the fact that she has a kid that is clearly biologically hers, I would assume that she's too busy doing EVERYTHING to have a family. My headache recedes just a touch.
Hmm... I actually really like what Sulky (Yams) is trying to say here. "I don't want to be with everyone because I'm Chosen. I want to be with Gabumon because he's my friend," basically. Part of me sides with Jyou- dude we all get that, it's not a shameful secret- but another part of me... Deeply appreciates that Yams can separate his duty as a Chosen from his bond with his digimon. Gabumon is his best friend, his number one. It doesn't matter if Gabumon can't fight, if Yamato can never digivolve him again. It doesn't even matter that he's a digimon. It just matters that they're friends, and that they be together somehow, which may seem a more tenuous position by the day. ...Now I'm sad. Well played, stage play. This moment is wonderful.
...Annnnnnd now Yamato is overacting to hell, and I'm laughing instead of thinking and feeling, was that supposed to happen? Sigh. I still don't understand why he has to be SO SECRETIVE about it, but I mean... That's our Yams???
And now we're back to Kou and Taichi, and they're pulling at each other's throats, as they will, and honestly this is the only "NOW KISS" moment for me, but where was I-
In all seriousness, I really like that the person to finally, FINALLY get the truth from Taichi is Koushiro. That's how it often was in Adventure too, yes? But I almost feel like Taichi's breakdown here is a reflection of what fans said in Saikai. Taichi in Adventure always took action (although he grew so much during Adventure, I'd argue the version of himself he's referencing now wasn't there by the end of Adventure?). He can't fight in Saikai because he's concerned about hurting people/property/the tenuous relationship between humans and digimon. He can't take action... But the ability to see that is an indication of growth, not regression. Will he understand that here?
Ok god, Agu-chan is dropping some truth bombs... And the way he and his puppeteer crawl... I swear these goddamm puppets will be the death of me.
Agu-chan, can you do me a solid and STAMP THIS ALL OVER EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE KIDS PLEASE AND THANK YOU?!
HOLY SHIT IS THAT A METALGRAYMON PUPPET?! THEY HAD THAT SHIT ALL ALONG AND THEY BRING IT OUT WITH 20 MINUTES LEFT?! WHAT WOT WOOOOT?!??! I cannot believe I'm seeing this. And I love how heavy and cumbersome the huge puppet feels. Like, I always felt like Metalgreymon would be huge and slow, right?
Etemon, I was done with your shit a LONG time ago...
WAIT he is admitting that he was Metaletemon previously. So... when... exactly did he fall into the Dark Ocean? Sigh. This is one of those "Let it go, Hidden" things, isn't it. Uh, wow, I am totally unfamiliar with Kingetemon. That's... a... thing.
The use of screens and images in the stage play are really fun! It must have been awesome to see this show in person O__o;;
OH SHIT, Yamato arrives in a cloud of smoke, that's how you KNOW shit is gonna go down!
OH MY GOD OMEGAMON ONLY GETS A HEAD OH MY GOD I'M DYING (Tony: "HEY do you know how big that thing's supposed to be?!)
KOUSHIRO IS WEARING THE GOGGLES I'm down. HIDDEN IS DOWN! REVIEWER DOWN!!!!
HOLY SHIT JYOU'S "A" ON HIS MOCK TEST WASN'T REAL okay this is also a Good Joke, I applaud. Also I am LOVING sassy Koushiro in this? His way of being sassy is to do it in a way where you're not quite sure if he is trying to be a butt or not, which is 10000000% yes lol (In contrast, Izzy is intentionally awful usually lol).
Annnnd I was right from the start; Jyou is carrying this entire thing, lol. Oh my god, the delivery on this?!?!??! AMAZING.
HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA. LAUGHTER. THEME SONG. DRAMATIC POSE. I THINK THIS IS THE END SHOT YOU GUYS.
Now the actors are coming out to speak!
THIS. LITTLE. SHIT. I love him? I... I love him. The snark is strong in this one. I... he is so... so beautiful. I... I think I might be in love? (This at least indicates that I wasn’t alone in thinking the computer toss was too much???).
YAMATO’S ACTOR JUST SAID "DON'T SAY GOODBYE," Well played, son. I like the cut of your jib.
AHHHHH OKAY OKAY I have no idea how I’m going to analyze this. My surface thought is that this play features a lot of the emotions and inner thoughts of individual characters that can’t fit into Tri, and that (I personally think) Tri suffers from a lack of. Because there isn’t really ship bait and maneuvering around a new character and plot, we’re able to see relationships that feel much more familiar to Adventure than we often see in Tri (ie, Taichi worried about Hikari, Koushiro worried about Taichi, etc). As you noticed, I’m very unhappy with the way the play pushes the payoff back as far as possible, cramming it into an AMAZING twenty minutes or so... But I loved those twenty minutes.
Also, Koushiro feels waaaay more like Koushiro than he does in Tri, except for Kokuhaku. As your local insane Koushiro fan girl, I am standing and applauding and screaming and crying. NO PERVY KOUSHIRO. NO FASHION DISASTERS. Just Koushiro being supportive and apt and sweet and trying so hard. I am refreshed. I am younger.
And the passion and love and energy that went into us, so visibly in human form... I can’t describe how wonderful the actors and the puppeteers were. And even though I kind of hated Etemon, his actor was incredible.
So the stage play has amazing points and really irritating points, but on the whole, it’s my second favorite thing Tri has given us (following Kokuhaku). I will try to write about it more smart-like soon! If you got this far... I’m in awe, lol! High five, my friend!

For Aracelli: 10 & 20. For Olivia: 7 & 29!
aracelli!
10. What’s their best stat?
oh my god dexterity. she’s a ranger who grew up in a clan of druids living nomadically in the woods, and she had to learn to be incredibly dexterous and nimble to keep up with them because she can’t wild shape, herself. she’s a hunter-tracker type and spent a good fifty years practicing archery in the woods by herself, learning how to trap, and learning how to move quietly. tldr she’s ridiculously nimble.
it’s worth noting that i play her in fourth edition where there’s a very flexible limit on how high your stats can go—she is currently sitting at a comfy 23 dex at only 12/30 levels. it’s terrifying
20. Are they religious? If so, what god or gods do they serve?
she’s vaguely religious! only in kind of a passive way, though. she grew up in a clan of druids, but she isn’t one and could never learn the abilities, and because of that, she never got to become a full member of her clan (she’s pretty much stuck in limbo as a grown woman who is still considered a child because she is completely incapable of performing the rite of passage).
because of all this stuff, her connection to their religious culture isn’t as strong as many of the others because not being considered able to participate as an adult, not being able to wild shape, and not having druidic abilities kind of stood in the way of her getting to be involved religiously as much as most others. she’s slowly learning how to worship on her own terms, but it’s a bit of a slow process
olivia!
7. What fictional character are they most like? Was this an intentional or accidental influence?
i actually can’t think of an explicit one! i think perhaps the only funny coincidence there is that i absolutely cannot help imagining her armor looking like that of horuss zahhak, sans the hat.
i think olivia kind of has a mishmash of different inspirations as her origin. she’s got a very classic country western hero archetype, and kind of inspiration pulled from a whole bunch of places like the mother from my sister’s keeper, maybe kissin’ kate barlow, and a whole bunch of country western tropes
29. Biggest positive and negative influences on their life and development?
hahaha, oh boy. best positive influences? probably her entire life before she became an adventurer. she was a common farmer who owned a small patch of farmland outside of a small city with her husband and three children, all of which she loved.
negative influence, buckle up here we go: there’s a big bandit problem in the hills outside of olivia’s home town, which has gone unhindered by the town mayor (who was being paid off by the bandits). a bandit party comes to olivia and her husband’s farm and, when the couple tries to stand up to them, her husband is killed in the fight, their three children are all but executed, and olivia is near-fatally wounded.
the bandits burn their crops as a warning, but olivia is able to get the family’s gun, drag herself up, and pretty brutally murder all of the bandits. after that with nothing left, she becomes a vigilante living in the hills and killing any bandits she comes across. she’s incredibly maternal and compassionate (she often throws herself into danger if it looks like someone she’s traveling with is in danger) but also brimming with hurt and hatred that comes out in very violent ways
after what happened, the best positive influences are probably the people she’d travel with because it keeps her from going out on her own and doing entirely reckless and self-endangering things, and it gives her people to love again :’)

“It” (2017)
Horror
Running Time: 135 minutes
Written by: Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman
Directed by: Andy Muschietti
Featuring: Jaeden Lieberher, Bill Skarsgård, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, Nicholas Hamilton and Jackson Robert Scott
Ben Hanscom: “Derry is not like any town I’ve been in before. People die or disappear, six times the national average. And that’s just grown ups. Kids are worse. Way, way worse.”
After a dreadful Summer at the US box office comes a movie that could redeem it somewhat as the prestige film season begins in earnest – that is the horror remake/adaptation of one of Stephen Kings most famous (and largest) novels, ‘It’ written in 1986, adapted once already as a television mini-series in 1990. Whilst the miniseries was set up in the present and told in flashbacks that featured the now infamous ‘Pennywise the Dancing Clown’ played with inimitable ferociousness by the great Tim Curry – leaving a mark on a generation as one of the most terrifying clowns in either TV or cinema – this new movie tracks slightly differently in tone as well as its narrative structure.
Originally set up at Warner Bros. with Cary Fukunaga as the both writer and director, after his huge success with the first season of HBO’s “True Detective” (2014 – present) he was the top choice, as well as Will Poulter as Pennywise this seemed like a slam-dunk. But as with many modern big budget films, or when studios have second thoughts Fukunaga left over differences, Poulter quickly followed suit, it looked like the project may be dead, but in stepped relative newcomer Andy Muschietti and Pennywise was recast with another gamble in the form of Bill Skarsgård. The challenge was always going to be how to condense a thousand page book into a possible two hour running time, but this I am happy to say has been solved in what must be one of the greater leaps of faith for a studio to make with unproven talents in front and behind the camera.
The plot has been split between the younger and older selves of the book with the frst film serving as a period piece set in the 1980s and if the sequel is to happen it will be set in modern times (2016) with a few possible flashbacks (apparently already filmed). The good news is that this film will already be enough of a hit for the sequel to be green lit and will be filmed early next year. The other piece of great news is that this movie stands on its own even if a sequel was never to be made with an ending that makes sense, but if you know the plot leaves a door open for one more visit to Derry.
“It” takes place in Derry, Maine in the summer of 1989, a group of outcast preteens known as “The Losers Club” fight against an immortal, shape-shifting entity responsible for the disappearance of dozens of children in their town, and are forced to confront their own personal demons in the process.
This is actually quite a unique film, particularly in the horror genre in that it has a large budget (compared to the cost of modern Horror movies), is based around children, but does not treat them as such, in fact they are for all intents and purposes the adults of the film – as well as all of this the film is aimed at an adult audience not the PG soaked one that has to be pandered to with only small amounts of violence, gore and coarse language. One other aspect of this film that I loved was the choices that each of the protagonists makes, they seem to be honest, as well as real in terms of the world they are inhabiting, something that is from the novel as well as the miniseries. If you have seen recent horror movies like “Annabelle: Creation” (2017) you will know about illogical, nonsensical decisions that are the inciting incidents that make absolutely no sense.
This film is well directed by Andy Muschietti, whose only other movie was the 2013 horror hit “Mama” produced by Guillermo del Toro based on his own short film. Here Muschietti must bring a well loved book to the screen with not only a sense of style, but an inexperienced cast as well as having one eye on the future, but always maintaining that this movie live in its own present. He has done an excellent job by marshaling his cinematographer Chung-hoon Chung, who brings a fresh originality with his work on his South Korean movies that mix genres as well as acting and directing styles. The film is not without its tropes and this is probably as a result from a mix of screenwriters that have taken passes at Fukunaga’s original script to try and boost parts that the studio thought were appealing – luckily though this is a visual film with many thrilling elements to hide any narrative flaws, which do exist.
“It” is the very definition of an ensemble piece with a few characters that take more of the screen time than others, those being Jaeden Lieberher as Bill, Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben and Sophia Lillis as Beverly, all heroes to be sure. Within this group though it is newcomer Sophia Lillis who shines as the real center of the group, she plays her part as heroine, victim and sometime love interest of both Ben and Bill. Lillis has the unenviable job of being the only girl in the group as well as coming of age in a town full of children that make up stories about her with a home life that is full of possible molestation and of course a killer clown that by the end of the movie she comes face to face with, she is definitely someone to keep an eye on in the future, a star turn then for her in this film. On the other side of the coin there is Nicholas Hamilton as Henry Bowers the human protaganost and Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise the otherworldly villain who causes all of the mischief. This really is Skarsgård’s movie with him obviously having a great time bringing one of the more iconic villains to life and scaring anyone he comes across – if they do make another movie I look forward to his return, I just hope I don’t have to wait long.
Another aspect of this film that dovetails with a current resurgence is the fact that is in set in the 1980s (although barely as it is 1989) much like the recent amazing “Stranger Things” (2016 – present) and the disappointing “Atomic Blonde” (2017). The 1980s pedigree is clear with music from ‘The Cure’, ‘The Cult’ and ‘Anthrax’ as well as movies present like “Batman” (1989), Lethal Weapon 2” (1989) and “A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: Dream Child” (1989). There are even jokes when Beverly discovers Ben listening to ‘New Kids on the Block’, and when they enter his bedroom a poster of the same – exceptionally funny. Of course the reason for the film to be set in the 1980s is that the next one will be twenty seven years later, which will be 2016 – I am assuming there will be some past references to make this workable – we shall have to wait and see.
This movie works extremely well on all levels, it works as a horror movie, a coming of age movie, a thriller and really a multitude of other genres as well, that is what is great about it, it also introduces a new crop of young actors as well the solidification of a visionary director in Andy Muschietti who I hope will direct the sequel. I can only assume that Cary Fukunaga will have no more to do with these movies as he has moved on but that is a shame as I can not help but think he is a large part of the success of this movie.
I recommend “It” to you if you love Stephen King, horror movies or just a good film; it looks great on the big screen with performances that really jump off the screen with scares as well as humor – if you are going to see one movie this month it should be this one.
“It” is out now on DVD & Blu-ray.
