do you ever sometimes think about how "living for the thrill of hitting you where it hurts" completely dismantles the entire mythos of the first like 6 albums, if not her entire artistic modus operandi up until this point. by shoving it into the light of day and reckoning with how none of it, the scathing kiss-offs and the lyrical take downs and the anthemic condemnations of those who've wronged her, was ever anything more than a brief moment of adrenaline fueled public vindication. but it didn't heal anything, none of it ever did, not really, not for more than a momentary thrill. we joke a lot about how she's never gotten over anything ever due to her revisiting the same villainous figures and unresolved situations in her life over and over, yes. but what a line to finally acknowledge that art can be cathartic in many ways, but for her she's perhaps used it as a crutch and that's stunted her ability to process her pain in a healthy way. a harsh realization that of course only comes with time, but really exquisite to see her look back at her near-entire career of being the sharp-tongued empowered girl who got the last word only to say... actually it was all kind of bullshit and it never really made the pain go away and it was ultimately all fleeting and hollow. nothing can replace the actual work of healing and processing and grieving, not even this most sacred act of songwriting she has depended on for solace for so long. yeah.
